The 20 Best New TV Shows of 2018 (So Far)
Which newcomers on the small screen have impressed reviewers the most during the first half of the year? Above, find the highest-scoring first-year TV shows (and miniseries) debuting between January 1, 2018 and June 27, 2018. Only shows with at least 7 reviews from professional critics are included.
Tied for this year's best new ongoing TV series so far, HBO's very dark comedy—or light half-hour drama?—comes from Bill Hader and Silicon Valley's Alec Berg. The former stars as a depressed hitman who attempts to embark on a career change after discovering the joys of performing while sitting in on an acting class while on a job. Joining Hader (who also directs multiple episodes) in the cast are Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, and Glenn Fleshler. Though the eighth and final episode would serve as a satisfying series-ender, Barry is returning for a second season next year.
“Let me just declare how far over the moon I am about Barry, a funny, violent, gripping and masterfully melancholy half-hour ... From start to finish, it’s just one hell of a show.” —Hank Stuever, The Washington Post
