and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – July 3, 2019
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019 by Metascore. Films must have at least 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
The year's best comedy to date is also the directorial debut for actress Olivia Wilde. Her coming-of-age film follows a pair of students (Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein) during an eventful, party-filled night on the eve of their high school graduation. Jessica Williams, Will Forte, Lisa Kudrow, and Jason Sudeikis also star in a comedy compared by many critics to Superbad (which featured Feldstein's brother, Jonah Hill).
“Nothing funnier, smarter, quicker or more joyous has graced the big screen in a long time. Every performance pulses with wit, whether drawing-room-precise or burlesque-broad. Every joke fires infallibly, whether blithe, barbed or raunchy. Every fresh face conceals a surprise. It’s a thrilling achievement by any measure, an AP course in the exuberance of youth.” —Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal
