and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – June 30, 2018
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018 by Metascore. Films must have more than 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
This just-opened indie is the first narrative feature from director Debra Granik since her hugely acclaimed 2010 drama Winter’s Bone. And Leave No Trace may be just as good as that film.
An adaptation of Peter Rock’s book My Abandonment, Trace is a character study centering on a war veteran and father (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie) who have been living in a forest outside Portland, Oregon and now must struggle to re-adapt to society. Critics have praised both performances and Granik’s subtle direction.
“Fiercely involving in a way we're not used to, made with sensitivity and honesty by director/co-writer Debra Granik, it tells its emotional story of a father and daughter living dangerously off the grid in a way that is unnerving and uncompromising yet completely satisfying.” —Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
