The 20 Best Movies of 2018 So Far
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – June 30, 2018
Which films have impressed critics the most during the first half of the year? Above, we rank the best-reviewed movies released in theaters between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018 by Metascore. Films must have more than 7 reviews from professional critics to be eligible.
The latest from writer-director Paul Schrader (Affliction, American Gigolo) stars Ethan Hawke as Reverend Ernst Toller, a tortured ex-military priest struggling with a dwindling congregation and guilt over the death of his son in the Iraq War. When a pregnant parishioner played by Amanda Seyfried requests that he counsel her husband, Reverend Toller must confront his past and humanity’s future. It's the best directorial effort in at least two decades from Schrader, who is perhaps best known as a screenwriter (frequently working with Martin Scorsese).
“Paul Schrader’s First Reformed is an amazing examination of faith, a film that stays with you long after you have left the theater.” —Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
