This film is viscerally relentless in spectacular fight scenes and moments of pure speculation on our characters which weaves beautifully and brutally into the chaotic future it so holds. However, I do not prefer this one over first class. That is unprecedented in my personal opinion. The main issue being in it's subtlety. There are a few sequences which seem to pile on explanation as 'would you believe I'm from the future?' with a comedic moment. Although in some scenarios, it is well done. A moment that works especially well is the one on one with Xavier and Xavier, and from a conclusive standpoint, it works artfully well. For me, X-men days of future past is not as fantastic as First Class, and in some ways lacks. But as a symbolic resolution, this is impressively fun and presents a relevant moral message that we can all follow, and even has the guts to make it conspicuous in it's development whilst proving that there are no true lefts or rights to each character, much like mutants, we are a complex mesh. A minority, and by showing each other the right way and instead of destroying each other, a peaceful end may come. Expand

This is the best X-men movie so far, action was great the story was ok, it felt a bit slow at times though. It brings back Professor X from the dead with no explanation, but you cant go wrong with Jackman as Wolverine. 7/10

It wasn't until 2011 that Matthew Vaughn sparked some new life into the series, by telling a rousing origin story that almost felt like a reboot to the franchise. Re-enter Singer, who brings the best of both his films and Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” by; combining the dark, seedy plotting of his first two movies with energized period stylings of "First Class". All this is achieved, while blending the fantastic cast of both films via an inventive time traveling plot that surprisingly works on all levels. Based on the comic book story-line of the same name; Wolverine is sent to the past by Kitty Pride (since when could she do that) in an attempt to change history and prevent an event that results in the Sentinel program; a program that dooms both humans and mutants. Little (and sometimes noticeable) characterizations that contradicts the previous films does bother the geek inside me, and I’m sure many can agree; but I’m willing to forgive and forget this time around. By incorporating socio-political topics (typical of X-Men) with an intriguing sci-fi premise "Days of Future Past" does far more than just entertain. But what I liked most was the balance of characters on display and the performances behind them. Whether it’s James McAvoy’s world-weary younger Xavier, Michael Fassbender’s morally disturbed younger Magneto or their introspective older selves (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively); the cast members bask in whatever limelight the film affords them. Though I’m still not convinced of Jennifer Lawrence’s rendition of Mystique, I appreciate what the writers were doing with character’s arc. “Days of Future” is fast, smart; most of our characters are well developed and effectively reintroduced; even lesser characters get their fleeting moments to shine. The sparing action sequences were well staged; and one thing I always admired about Singer was his way of defining the characters' abilities through elaborately staged set pieces. Kudos to that Quicksilver slow-mo scene. The dystopian future and vintage period setting was brought to life by nice production designs and the visual effects dazzle unlike any other X-Men film. It’s up there as one of the finest X-Men films (second only to “X2: X-Men United”) and certainly one of the better superhero films in recent times. Entertainment is guaranteed! Expand

The movie has a gripping story with enchanting visual effects. However, the story is quite convoluted, moving back and forth from the past and future. Still, it was a good piece of work that made the entire series more understandable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a movie packed with action and a little gruesome killings by the Sentinel. The graphics and the action seemed fresh, especially Blink with "portal gun" powers. The storyline and the plot ideas almost always keep you at grip. Love to see the composed and the responsible Professor as a drunkard for the first time. Young Magneto's character description, just like in all X-Men movies, was perfect. Needless to say, Quicksilver, even in a short role was the best!
A big disappointment I felt was the transformation of young Xavier. He changes his lifestyle and motives by a thought of Mystique, a speech by himself and even words by Logan (when he doesn't take his pills for the first time)! I would have appreciated a slower and more sensible transformation.
Also, they had a lot of scope in the future-past combination which they never exploited. Technically, each incident of past can affect the future. In movie, there were only two possible futures, one with Sentinels and one without. But the fact that Logan was changing the past continuously means that the future also has to change continuously.

If I would compare this film to inception, then I would rather watch inception, because inception provided a great balance between the action and dialogue. Don't get me wrong, the actors were fantastic. The story idea was great, and I understand that time traveling called for a lot of talking to keep the audience aware of what is going on. However, there was A LOT of potential for some great action to take place in between the talking, whereas the x-men failed to deliver. After watching it, I can't believe rottentomatoes has a 91% rating on it. I would rank Cap. Am. Winter soldier way better than this film, whereas amazing spidey 2 would be the only major superhero flick so far this year, to be worse than x-men. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely the BEST X-men movie put out so far! After the first 30-45 minutes of the movie i found myself rubbing my eyes, yawning and looking at my watch often. I swear I must 1 of 3 Black guys who think Halle Berry is the worst Storm ever. I mean damn the only thing the got right with Halle Berry playing Storm is that she is Black! I actually cheered when the Sentinels killed her. Its not too many things I can point that is wrong with this movie other than...1. Quicksilver looked corny as hell (but he was pretty dope) 2. Bishop was undersold. 3. The Sentinels didn't say anything...(in the comics and on the show they always said mutant detected) 4. THe Sentinels looked like the Destroyer from the first Thor movie. 5. Where the HELL was Scarlet Witch (maybe they are saving her for the Avengers 3 movie where they will have Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver join the Avengers). There are more things i find wrong with this movie but I guess by now you get the point! Days of Future Past was by far the best X-men movie but I sincerely hope Fox gives up the rights to X-men or better yet at least collaborate with Marvel Studios on the next X-men movie, seeing as how the Movie will more than likely have Apocalypse (X-men The Age of Apocalypse) which might introduce Archangel. Somewhere along the along the lines I got side tracked...oh well back to Days of future past! Like I said before X-men Days of Future Past was not a horrible movie but damn it was not great neither. MoreI get those who prefer to say this movie was not perfect or lacked something, but the truth is Hollywood never putted its hands on a such rich and wide story. I mean, of course for this X-Men movie, with time travel it is to expect more. More encounters, more dilemmas about the quantum physics involved, I was expecting all that plus a more spread participation between the characters. The elements are all there but, the thing is, maybe this time, as usually happens the plot was managed by suits, re-managed by the suits bosses and so on. It is not a masterpiece, could be in the hand of a Kubrick, - any other name here would be a blasphemy but... - a Spielberg, a Zemeckis. I'd love to see, for one time some risk being taken. But, I guess Bryan Singer is the only guy not up to risks at this point. It's a shame, the story sure should be better explored. Expand

I have avoided any real spoilers although some basic story ideas are revealed...

This movie has the arduous task of tying two different casts of the same basic characters together across the span of time. Marvel did a nice job here and manages to pull it off. It harkens back a little to Star Trek Generations where Kirk and Picard are in the same movie. Speaking of that there is a little Star Trek Easter Egg in this movie, so see if you catch it :) So this was the future X-men connecting with the past X-men. The cast of X-men First Class meets the cast of the three X-men movies with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

The writers did a nice job on the story. The future and the past mesh well and that is not an easy task with time travel type scenarios. During the middle third of the movie I wasn’t really feeling it. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but the plot just kind of happens. There are times in the film that it seems to drag a bit. Never does it venture into dull or boring and story elements do move forward in a timely fashion. This one was not the epic action packed adventure of say, The Avengers. Rather, it moves through a lot of story content, so dialog is very important. The dialog in this film is a little sub-par for a Marvel movie. Over all at the end, I just didn’t have that holy cow that was an awesome experience as I was leaving the theater.

Not getting that wow factor could have allot to do with Marvel superhero fatigue. Let’s face it there is no shortage of heroes in masquerade on the big screen these days. This is the fifth installment of X-Men; so this was a tall order for Marvel to keep it interesting. They pulled it off however. I really like the connection that was made between these two “eras” of X-men. The Wolverine is a key player in this film and as usual Hugh Jackman is the man and he IS the Wolverine!

I was very pleasantly surprised with the prequel movie “First Class” that introduced us to the new cast of mutants. Although this latest effort fails to reach the high marks of that film, it does fare quite well overall in a sea of great superhero movies. First Class had better dialog and a deliciously sinister villain, portrayed by Kevin Bacon. The villain in Days of Future Past is more nebulous. In the “future” plot, it is not an individual but more of a bad idea gone worse. In the “past” the villain tends to track well with the X-Men comics and story as the villains are often misunderstood mutants with an eye for survival against fearful humans. Although this latest effort fails to reach the high marks of that film, it does fare quite well overall in a sea of great superhero movies.

I give this one a solid 7 on the Metacritic scale.

The film is directed by Bryan Singer, who also directed the first two parts of the X-Men movie series. X-Men: Days or Future Past is the seventh film. The story is set in an alternate, dystopian future.

-X-Men: Days or Future Past was nominated for the Oscar and the BAFTA award for best visual effects.

-Extra scene:

-X-Men: Days or Future Past contains after the end of the credits an extra scene. En Sabah Nur (alias Apocalypse) builds telekinetic styled pyramids in a desert. Looking in the background are the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' - Death, famine, Pestilence and War -.

--Critical response:

-X-Men: Days of Future Past has received widespread critical acclaim. The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports a 91% approval rating from critics, with an average score of 7.6/10, based on 270 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "X-Men: Days of Future Past combines the best elements of the series to produce a satisfyingly fast-paced outing that ranks among the franchise's finest installments". On Metacritic, the film has a score of 74 based on 43 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

-Sean O'Connell of Cinema Blend gave the film four and a half stars out of five, and said it was "the greatest, most complete and staggeringly entertaining (X-Men film) to date". Empire gave it four out of five stars and called it, "The best X-Men film since the second one". Steve Rose of The Guardian rated the film three stars out of five; he said, "Non-devotees might struggle, but director Bryan Singer whips up the action towards a symphonic climax". David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter said, "While it's more dramatically diffuse than the reboot and lacks a definitive villain, the new film is shot through with a stirring reverence for the Marvel Comics characters and their universe." Justin Chang of Variety said, "If the characters' quandaries at times feel overly circumscribed, they're also advanced with a bracing emotional directness, devoid of either cynicism or sentimentalism, that touches genuine chords of feeling over the course of the film’s fleet 130-minute (sic) running time".

-In contrast, Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph rated the film two stars out of five and called the plot "a curate's egg, thoroughly scrambled". He concluded, "The film squanders both of its casts, reeling from one fumbled set-piece to the next. It seems to have been constructed in a stupor, and you watch in a daze of future past." Simon Abrams, writing for RogerEbert.com, gave the film two-and-a-half stars out of four, calling it a "visually driven and paint-by-numbers-plot". Abrams was critical of the undeveloped subplots that built up because the film's pacing left little time to develop each element of the story set in the 1970s.

--Sequel:

-In December 2013, Singer announced X-Men: Apocalypse, an upcoming X-Men film acting as a sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Singer is attached to direct from a script by Simon Kinberg, Dan Harris, and Michael Dougherty. According to Singer, the next film will focus on the origin of the mutants. Kinberg said it will take place in 1983 and will complete a trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Lucas Till and Hugh Jackman will reprise their roles, with Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Hardy, Lana Condor, and Olivia Munn joining the cast. Filming began in April 2015 in Montreal, Quebec for a May 27, 2016 release.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is great but there are a lot of problems with it. The story, cast and characters are all solid and the action sequences are really cool to watch. It grabs your attention from the moment it starts and keeps pulling you in as the plot progresses while at the same time developing and adding layers to characters we already know and giving intriguing introductions to some new ones for the next film. It looks great, it's acted brilliantly and is well directed. So why am I only giving it a 6? Four reasons:
Too much throwing in random characters for no reason other than to say they were there (Why was Havok even in this film?)
No explanation as to how Wolverine got his adamantium claws back (The previous film was The Wolverine where he lost them and went back to bone claws but now somehow they're adamantium again.)
No explanation as to how Shadowcat can send people back in time (Seriously, how does she do that? Her power is walking through walls, when and how to did she obtain time travel powers?)
No explanation as to how future Xavier is even alive after being vaporized in The Last Stand (Look, Singer, if you wanna forget The Last Stand I understand that, we all do. But you can't acknowledge some parts as canon and ignore others. It's all or nothing.)
So yeah there are holes in this film. That said, it's still a good time and has definitely got me looking forward to Apocalypse. It is a really enjoyable super hero movie but just bear in mind there are some things you'll have to be forgiving about.

One problem is that there are too many X-Men for any of them to receive anything but the most simplified broad brush backstory, so none of them feel like real people, so you don't really care that much what happens to them. One highlight is that the guy playing the role of Nixon was great, almost uncanny. Mystiques's makeup is not as good in the original X-Men. It looks much less natural and fake; the filmmakers also seem too shy to show Mystique for more than a split second at a time. Also, now that we know there is a method for going back in time whenever it is convenient, all future drama (if there are more movies) is wiped out, because if someone dies, if anything else goes wrong, they can just send Wolverine back in time to fix it. Overall, a mildly disappointing entry. Expand

At one point, sometime after the atrocious Carl’s Jr. commercials, I assumed it would be somewhere around Spider-Man 3. There were a lot of reasons I felt so strongly about it, mainly that I feel the old cast should have been liquidated and re-casted. The trailers all made the movie appear to be unwatchable, but I was pleasantly surprised.

While I still stand strong about the old cast being bad, they didn’t take over this movie at all. Another huge complaint I had going into it was how unbelievably stupid Evan Peter’s Quicksilver looked. If the crappy GRAY hair and poorly dyed eyebrows weren’t enough to upset the awful costume made my stomach churn. With that said I feel the 15-20 minutes Quicksilver is on screen is some of the best moments of DoFP. Evan Peter’s was hilarious and his acting was on point, he truly held his own next to Fassbender and McAvoy, who were amazing as always. The acting I was most disappointed with had to be Jennifer Lawrence. She felt flat and lifeless from start to finish and it may be one of her worse roles to date.

Another fatal flaw of the movie was the mistreatment of certain mutant characters! As always they worked hard to make Wolverine shine, while other important characters get shoved into the background. One point in the movie they discuss all the mutants that died between First Class and Days of Futures Past, but never once showed a flashback or memorial of these characters who are crucial to the universe. They also introduced some characters without discussing their importance or strength, I’m talking about Bishop here, and I hardly understand why they bothered at all!

With all that said Days of Futures Past was a complete fan service for comic book readers. Lots of Easter eggs and nerdy nods had me sitting on the edge of my seat biting my nails with joy! The after credit sequence induced high-pitched squeals even. X-Men: Days of Futures Past was better than I was expecting, I don’t think it’s the amazing movie everybody keeps saying it is. There were problems that were hard to overlook, but in all a fun and enjoyable movie. ShaunaOH gives X-Men: Days of Futures Past a 6.7/10!!

Was he forced to act at gunpoint or what? He was lifeless.... the setpieces at times awesome, mostly involves the killing of some random mutant that we dont care about so there is that, next is the boring pace, the only redeeming thing is quicksilver and hes not around for long, what a shame... boring at times, bad acting, inconsistency, not as epic as avengers or man of steel and definitely not a thoughtful as captain america, it was really a let down for me despite the well intentioned fan service (Wolverine v Magneto) Hope this franchise returns to Marvel for theaters... There are some pretty bad cinematography in this film, akin to low budget thai horror movie - you will know which scene i am refering to if you watch this film.

Magneto is a schizophrenic in this film, making major decisions snappishly on a whim: deciding to avert the disastrous future by preventing a murder at one moment and then deciding to kill that same intended victim plus the president (which would no doubt leads to disaster) in the next moment.

Schizophrenic characters are hallmarks of a bad story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Terrible jumbled mess of a film that walks all over itself and then again.

Not so much a Xmen film, then it is to showcase a 1970s Jennifer Lawerence.
Lawerence is the the ONE that can save us or damn us. The trouble is, Lawerance is so gullible that all you need are mini speeches tor turn her bad or good.

Mystique can now also change her physical size and become as small as a Lanister. YET.. she gets shot in the leg, and limps around half the movie. Doesn't she heal fast as well?

How many times will Magneto just throw things? Is that all he can do? I thought his power was magnetism. Magneto vs Melneto? "Quick give me your car keys, I must defeat the bad guys"

Xavier has a serum that 'cures' a bullet to the spine but it also takes away his powers? Whaaaa? I mean honestly.. They could have easily said the bullet didn't cripple him, only to have him crippled later in the final film, which would have been the "ripple in the pond" bit..

Quicksilver by far the strongest Mutant in the film. After the great Metal man robbery, they just send him home. Don't you think he would be a huge asset to the cause?

They could have used the fact he was a rebellious kid, plus they drop the hint he was Magnetos kid to create a powerful story arch. Maybe quicksilver comes out of no where to rescue is father instead of Xavier letting him go.

The sentinels in 1970s are made of space age advanced technology. The 1970 space age sentinels are in the film for exactly 5 minutes, and do jack.

How come they extract and bond Mystique powers on the future sentinels but no other? Seems if you can take the DNA of one dead mutant and extract it, surly you can do it for any mutant

Wolverine is the biggest joke, he does jack **** in the entire film. I say again, does absolutely nothing. At the end of the film, Magneto tosses his ass in a big river left to die. Then when its all over, Xavier just leaves him there. Knowing FULL WELL all the acts of horror that will be committed on Wolverine.. Except Wolverine volunteered for it.
Wolverine is also nude at one point, so the 90% male audience who like comic book movies will appreciate that.

The final future fight scene is almost exactly like the first one. Boring!!
Kitty can do time travel now.
Also Kitty suffers a mega gushing blood wound, yet.. the ice man or the fire guy can't close the wound up? There was no medkit on the Xplane?

I digress.. I could on and on and on.. How hard is it to stick to a a great comic book story? Why do they insist on reinventing the wheel...

Thus when I review this, I assume it has relations to previous X-Men titles and since that was the reason I went to see this film, the movie fails. Now the question is how do I rate it? Do I rate it as a stand alone movie? Do I rate it as a horrible sequel the previous X-Men films? If someone wanted to write a movie like this, why couldn't they create a new franchise? Why did they need to milk the X-Men name for a few more viewers and take a chance at destroying the franchise (this is one of two reasons why comics died in the 90s)? There was no loyalty to the fans and the companies made it obvious that all they wanted was money when the fans wanted continuity and a good story. This is dishonest in my opinion so I am going to review it as an X-Men film.

The effects were good but honestly this is the 21st century and those effects really dont pop out any more. I didnt see anything new so no bonus points for innovation.

As an X-Men film following the X-Men continuity of previous films, there are too many plot holes in the story. I wont go into every detail because the list is much too long but here is quick summary.

1 - Xavier is alive. Even if we assumed he jumped bodies, why is he still in a wheelchair? Stupid stupid stupid writing.
2 - Quicksilver could have accomplished the entire plot goal on his own... but he was not brought along for the ride. They just sent him home to watch tv while the world was on the brink of collapse.
3 - Stryker is not the same person from older movies yet logan remembers him as the guy from the old movie. Note that in both movies, the time is 70's. In the old movie, he was 40s-50s. In this movie he is in his 20s. What?
4 - Wolvie got adamantium claws in the future... but he lost them in the Wolverine movie.

Upon arriving in the 70s - 'cos everything in Hollywood has to flashback to the 70s: no other decade exists! - he promptly sets off on a jaunt to persuade Prof X and Magneto to play happy families and stop the ebul future that he is living through in which mutants are nearly extinct.
Now, Prof X, having sunk into despair 'cos reasons, has started taking a drug made by Beast that was developed to suppress the X-gene, and in consuming said, he not only loses his powers but also regains the use of his legs - magical stuff this, that can repair a severed spinal column due to...errr...DNA! Yeah...
Anyway, he buys Logan's story, with next to no proof, and heads off across America to break Irish Magneto out of a secret, concrete prison below the Pentagon with nothing more than his awesome sideburns and a kid who can move fast (cue: worst reveal of illegitimate child EVER), providing, at least, the only fun point of this film (slo-mo kitchen fight).
So, with the band all back together, off they jog once more to stop Mystique from killing a bad man, thus undoing a chain of events that will lead to her DNA being used to destroy all of Mutantkind. Of course, Irish Magneto being the raging bloody idiot he is, has to sabotage every plan they come up with by randomly trying to murder first Mystique, then just about anyone else he does not like the look of.
Of course, it all resolves at the last possible moment, just as the mutants from the future are set to be wiped away for good, with every important character already having being brutally murdered at least once, leaving us with what is quite possibly the biggest retcon in the history of cinema, with the director bringing back everyone who ever died and especially focusing on undoing all of X-Men 3. There there, Bryan Singer; you can dry your eyes now. All the mean and nasty stuff that someone else did to your work (ie the first two utterly rubbish films) is all forgotten now, and you can now move forward bravely, preparing to milk this franchise dry with your banal plots, tedious character work and immature humour.
I know that XMen, at least from the point of view of the comics, is a total train-wreck, having retconned its whole universe on multiple occasions, but I just expect better of movies - or at least I used to. Clearly this is what everyone else wants from this medium, so it, along with gaming, are simply not for me any more.

Very comic-book like script. Even when you enter the X-Men world (with the leap from reality that it requires), it's still hard not to question the plausibility of a few of the scenes.

It felt like a ginormous retcon that only ended at the same place we started all those years ago.....except Wolverine has a bit of grey in his hair while everyone else somehow looks exactly the same as they did in the first movie.

A lot of the mutant powers werent shown very well and were tweaked in order to fit whatever grand idea Singer had in his head. From Bishop's absorption power being turned into a glorified super soaker to QuickSilver being more of a time-controller than a mutant who could run faster than sound. A small gripe that slightly cheapened some scenes for me.

The plot, pacing, and characterization were what really brought the movie down for me. A lot of it was just sub-par.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all i like all superhero movies and this is not different but i have to say this one is almost actionless like the wolverine. Two hours of talking is not what we expect from a x-men movie, right ? Sentinels are boosted too much that the destroyer is a kitten compared to them, i remember sentinels as huge silly robots from the animated series which i was a big fan of when i was much younger not like these invincible m...f... Seeing x-men were no match for them and die in pathetic ways was really annoying. As always they didn't use storm as they should, she is a f... demigod and i hate to see her so fragile all the time. And of course we saw rogue for ten seconds, she is one of my favorites i don't get why can't we see her flying and kicking ass. I always want longer movies but can't get enough thrill even in a 2 hours of "action" , i hope producers will do more to fill entire movies in the future because this franchise doesn't seem to make progress anymore. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is just awful. I do not know why these directors keep making Wolverine the protagonist. I am sick of him already. The directors have so many other X-Men but Wolverine is the most popular and he is a cash cow. I guess it kind of makes sense with the plot in this one but still. He is bland and he hardly even fights. Mystique is alright in the film. She is basically there so Wolverine has something to do but it gets the job done. Magneto is complicated because you cannot tell what he is going to do. In one scene he is about to kill Mystique before she tries to kill the creator of the Sentinels but then later he tries to send a message to the world by trying to kill the very same person she was trying to kill. The best part of the movie is Quicksilver but he gets used for one or two scenes then the movie just drops him like his powers cannot help them in some other way, for instance, I don't know, finding Mystique! Also, Quicksilver mentions that his mom went out with a man who could control metal but then the subject never gets brought up again. I mean, come on! Why bring it up if you're not going to use it? Basically, mutants are being hunted, Wolverine is the only one who can save the day by going back in time and rounding up Charles and Magneto to team up but of course it is not going to be easy, even though Wolverine says that future is doomed if they don't work together. Magneto tries to do it his way because of angst and Charles is still upset that he took his girlfriend away. Big deal. There is also way too much talking and not enough action. Don't let the beginning of the movie fool you. There isn't going to be more action until near the end. I know that they are trying to set up the plot and go into some detail but jeez. I thought that Wolverine was going to do his taxes at some point. But I will say that Wolverine can hold his breath under water a really long time. And his body sure is tough enough to break metal right off even though it is pierced around his whole body...and well you get the idea. Maybe it is because it's a dream to him that it doesn't really affect him. Maybe... Also, I do not like how, at the end, Bryan Singer (The Director) basically says **** you to the first three X-Men movies and brought everyone back to life setting the movie up perfectly for a sequel. I guess Magneto isn't the main antagonist anymore? Or the fact that the future never happening maybe means that Magneto and Charles never get along. I don't know. That's up to the director of the next movie to decide. Wait, can't Charles just mind warp those future images into Magneto so that he remembers they are friends now? Oh well. Find out next week for the not so thrilling (not) conclusion! Expand

I thought the first one was pretty well made, but as is usually the case, the ensuing sequels and spinoffs were all down hill from there. Talk about a comic book movie taking itself so seriously! So much brooding, despair, hopelessness and misery in this one! Some more mutants who's powers seem to be mostly just looking weird? Evolved? This movie is worth the look for the 15 - 20% of the footage centered around action sequences and some new mutant power show offs. Take that away and it is your basic soulless blockbuster series annuity. Especially for the actors...lot's of them came back to life to collect residual income promised to them in Xmen;Days of past contract shortfalls. I was actually hoping the sentinels finished off all the mutants for good...to spare homo sapiens another movie! Fell asleep for a short portion, so I can't be sure, but it seemed like the sentinels delivered some of the most compelling lines of the whole script. Expand

This review is being written in the past. You may end up reading this in 20 years. Hopefully, not because X-Men Days of Future Past is considered a classic but because humor never dies. Where to begin to talk about this movie is the question. This review is being written in the past. You may end up reading this in 20 years. Hopefully, not because X-Men Days of Future Past is considered a classic but because humor never dies. Where to begin to talk about this movie is the question. Have you seen X-Men before? It’s all the same right. (dodges level 5 lightning bolts from hardcore nerd fans). What makes this film different or attempts to be different is the idea that time is just….You’ve seen Back to The Future right? Combine that with the X-Men universe and you get this film. Minus Doc Brown sadly.

The movie takes some contractually obligated actors from the prior franchise films and some newcomers that nobody has any interest in and throws them in the middle of this movie. For the first part of it you are trying to catch up. You will be sitting in the theater thinking things like, What happened in Xmen 3? Is that now not real. Who is this white blonde hair kid? Why can the lady throw purple portals? What’s up with the gun with the red eyes? And a whole host of other things.

Even the on-screen presence of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Prof. X and Ian McKellen seem to be confused as why they are there. The last two hardly make a motion outside of the initial room they are in at the start of the movie. What a dream for an actor. In what amounts to spending only a few pages of dialog with the best actors. Just feels bland. They even seem sad or maybe they are trying to be in character. It’s just sad watching them. They’ve done their part for king and country let them go make art films or act in theater plays. Maybe Patrick Stewart can re-boot a worthy Star Trek series again. Something that will help humanity more than another slugfest of a comic book movie. Nobody wants to watch these anymore.

At this point one can’t comment on how well or poorly the movie is done. It’s simply a matter of comparing it to the prior films. It’s certainly more enjoyable and tries to have some heart that many of the other recent films have not. It does not have that sled being pulled of having to be an origin story. But we’ve come so far as an audience past those origins that this is what we are left with. A tale so generic and predictable that no right minded comic book editor would give it a green light not to mention being made into a film. It’s such a bad movie that series hoarder of credits, Stan Lee refused to make a cameo in it. That’s a tag line that should be on the poster.

It’s enjoyable for a while. There are parts where you might cheer and other parts where you duck you heard in embarrassment. The high amount of dialog means this pop-corn movie is not very well buttered, so easy off on eating while watching it or you might miss some of the dialog because the action will leave you with a salty feeling in your mouth wanting more. O, so much more.

Its movies like these that make theaters show the warnings not to text during the movie.

The first time Jennifer Lawrence as a blue lady, “X-MEN: DAY OF FUTURE PAST”, turns into a male soldier it is a special effect and then when she turns into a beautiful woman it is special but the twentieth time she morphs into another person it isn’t special anymore.

When Hugh Jackman steps out of bed and shows full male back nudity that is special and may have an effect on the audience but it happens only one time making it a ‘special effect’. Michael Fassbinder, who hasn’t been shy when it comes to full frontal nudity in other films, stays dressed in this one and the first time he puts on his helmet and suspends everyone, and everything, in the air it is a special effect but the 4th or 5th it is a “So what?” Are Jackman’s ‘nails’ surprising anymore?

Is it surprising that the White House takes a battering or panes of glass of are smashed robot like transformers walk around killing people? I didn’t think so. How many mutant X-Men and X-Women are too many? Or do you just stop talking after Wolverine (Jackman), Mystique (Lawrence), Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), Storm (Halle Berry) Magneto (Ian McKellan future, Fassbender past) Professor X (Patrick Stewart Future, James McAvoy past), Blink (Fan Bingbing), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Rogue (Anna Paquin) or the 50th X-Men or is it when you suspect Richard Nixon (Mark Camacho) might be a mutant?

There are as many story lines (screenplay by Simon Kinberg, story by Jane Goldman, Mattew Vaughn and Kinberg) as there are X-Men, X-Women and mutants but all are easy to follow, if you are interested in following any of them. Director Bryan Singer keeps the 2 hour, 11 minute movie going at a fast pace with all the special effects.

It is easy to see that paying the extra dollars to see it at IMAX and 3 D would probably be worth the money but, as far as I am concerned, this is my last foray into Marvel comic movies and other films that are mainly special effects that stop being special.

It gets a 2 from me because of an awesome sequence involving a mutant(Quicksilver) with super speed. It seems all the thought and energy were put into this scene, and it does pay off 200%. All the other actors seem to be showing up to pick up a paycheck, and moving along as fast as possible. I love Jennifer Lawrence, but she even seems to be going through the paces. What a disappointment :( Expand

Maybe I lack understanding as I never got into comic books. I did however enjoy X-Men and especially X2, but since then the ride has gotten a little bumpy. X3 was OK as was Origins. I quite liked First Class, but The Wolverine and Days Of Future Past have gone a long way towards sinking this franchise. I'm thinking if you agree with what I've said so far, you're more than likely to agree with what's to come.

The story is dark, which doesn't necessarily make for a poor film, but even if you suspend your disbelief it's still a stretch to really get behind the plot. And when it's "resolved" all you've accepted in the X-Men universe is flipped on it's proverbial head. I was not satisfied with the end/resolution of this film, I did not find the story engaging, and I do not think it successfully added anything to the franchise. As a prequel, First Class did (for me, anyway) in that it explained the history to many of the relationships we've come to know and added new dimensions to them. Character development was successful and satisfying. Even though Origins took a hit at the time, I would argue that in spite of its many flaws, it also helped to explain some things and overall worked as a film.

Days Of Future Past did not. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, and some other notable figures are mere bystanders. Right from the beginning you're transported into the way unfamiliar, and for my money, the unfamiliar leads to the downright bizarre and far fetched - even for a movie of this genre. And when the conflict is resolved, everything you've come to know may as well have been a dream sequence. I don't want to give anything away here as far as major plot lines, but I really thought this movie stunk. I wish I hadn't seen it and by about half way in was starting to look at the clock. Never a good omen, right? And perhaps the hardest pill to swallow is where they may go from here with the next movie. It just doesn't bode well if you're like me and found this movie so disappointing as you would prefer to scratch it off the list and start over from where they left off before things went downhill. I found The Wolverine to be a horrendous film, but at least it was complete in and of itself and didn't set the stage and tone for the whole franchise from that point onward.

Sorry to write such a bummer of a review for this movie as I had high hopes after the good reviews started to roll in. But I'd be lying through my teeth if I said anything other than that this is perhaps the worst X-Men film of the bunch.

I like Jennifer Lawrence, but as Mystique? Nay. Rebecca Romijn will always be Mystique. As for the rest of the movie, while it had some sweet spots, I felt the plot was convoluted and a fair bit unrealistic...even for a film based upon comic heroes.

This is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Everything about this movie falls flat, starting with the atrocious "plot." Think of the worst sci-fi plot, and dumb it down more, and even that would probably work better than this story. This is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Everything about this movie falls flat, starting with the atrocious "plot." Think of the worst sci-fi plot, and dumb it down more, and even that would probably work better than this story. The X-Men comic has had some pretty great writing over the years, but this movie ignores all of it. No character is true to the comics. There is no character growth. There is no human drama. There is no real dramatic structure. The dialogue sounds like it was written by a huge committee, thus it has no style or real content. All it has are lots and lots of effects. Lots. Really. But in the end, effects don't make a good movie, just a spectacle. Expand
