This is my second favourite X-men film after First Class. They managed to connect the timelines of the previous films, it's a good story with many action.

Thoroughly enjoyed this entry for the intense action sequences and wondrous CGI. Too be honest it feels like a rollarcoaster ride that starts off sweet and ends with a bang!

X-Men: Days of Future Past tries to stuff the whole X-Men universe – past, present and future – into one movie. The character overload may leave X-Men newbies dazed and confused, unless they're blissfully stoned. But fans are in for an exhilarating rush.

Director Bryan Singer, beset by a sex scandal and the very real possibility of franchise fatigue (this is the seventh X-Men epic), returns to the game he started successfully in 2000 with X-Men and continued in 2003 with X2. He does himself proud, combining the pow of his early films with the game-changing playfulness of Matthew Vaughn's 2011 X-Men: First Class, which introduced James McAvoy as the boyish version of Patrick Stewart's telepathic Professor X and Michael Fassbender in a youthful take on Ian McKellen's metal-bending Magneto. McAvoy and Fassbender, both terrific, are still playing out a battle that pits peaceful coexistence against mutant world dominance.

The plot wrinkle supplied by screenwriter Simon Kinberg involves time travel. In the future, murderous robots known as Sentinels are hellbent on wiping out mutants and their human allies. That's when Professor X and Magneto use the powers of Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back to 1973, when President Nixon (a hilarious Mark Camacho) approved the Sentinel plan hatched by übervillain Dr. Trask (the great Peter Dinklage having a blast).

No way am I spilling more. I will say that McAvoy and Stewart have a potent face-to-face, that Jackman catches the wit and warmth in Wolfie's confusion, and that Magneto's escape from a Pentagon prison is a wowser. For scene-stealing, the prize goes to Jennifer Lawrence, whose shape-shifting, blue-skinned Mystique is a match for any man or mutant, including Beast, her buddy in blue, played by Lawrence's off-screen love, Nicholas Hoult. Getting short shrift are Halle Berry's Storm, Shawn Ashmore's Iceman and Anna Paquin's Rogue. But you won't forget Evan Peters, who is dynamite as a speeding bullet known as Quicksilver.

OK, maybe Days of Future Past is merely a stopgap between First Class and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. But it's also a movie that uses action to define character and has the skills to make you care about outcasts in a society that hews spinelessly to the norm. A rousing epic of mind and heart in a summer of craven formula. Now that's something worth calling spectacular.

There are action scenes but many are suffused with a sense of futility. Battles turn into massacres with the "good guys" on the wrong side of the carnage. A whiff of the apocalypse hangs in the air, ready to descend and blot out everything. Not since The Dark Knight Rises has a movie featuring familiar heroic figures taken such a grim and unconventional path. To reboot the X-Men franchise, director Bryan Singer, who first gave these characters screen life fourteen years ago, has crafted a continuity-lover's nightmare.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is more science fiction than comic book action. The Terminator influences are immediately obvious, as are those of the Doctor Who adventure, "Genesis of the Daleks." Trapped in a war-ravaged 2023, the X-Men face annihilation by The Sentinels, creatures of war created for one purpose: terminating mutants and all those who aid or abet them. Earth has turned into a giant killing field. The X-Men, unable to defeat The Sentinels, place all their hopes in one last-ditch effort: send one of their own back in time to avert the creation of The Sentinels. The choice is Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and his greatest challenge proves not to be stopping twisted Sentinel creator Boliver Trask (Peter Dinklage) but getting the 1973 versions of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to work together to save the future. In the cross-hairs is blue-skinned shapeshifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), who must be prevented from killing Trask lest the future be set. For Xavier, that means convincing her not to commit the deed. For Magneto, it means eliminating her so she can't do it. For Logan, caught in the middle, the situation becomes increasingly desperate.

It would be fair to characterize the storyline of X-Men: Days of Future Past as "dense." It's not one of those plots that caters to intellectual laziness. Time travel stories, even those that play by an established set of rules, are always challenging. There are battles and action scenes aplenty but, with exception of a playful sequence featuring a lightning-fast mutant called Quicksilver (Evan Peters), most are steeped in a sense of desperation. There are no grand moments of heroic triumph and victory comes from something more existential than beating the crap out of a bad guy.

There is no single readily identified villain. In 2023, The Sentinels wear the mantle but they are implacable terminators - machines without soul or conscience. In 1973, depending on the moment, one could see Trask, Magneto, Mystique, or even Xavier as the antagonist but all have legitimate reasons for their behavior. Trask seeks peace; Magneto fights for the salvation of his species; Mystique want vengeance against someone who slaughtered her friends; and Xavier desires freedom from pain.

There's a message to be found in X-Men: Days of Future Past as well. Benjamin Franklin once said, "Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one." The creation and acceptance of The Sentinels represents a desire to cede liberty for safety and it has tragic consequences. This isn't a unique message, especially in science fiction films (The Robocop remake most recently addressed this), but Singer does a good job conveying it without becoming preachy.

If there's a weakness to be found in X-Men: Days of Future Past, it's in the special effects. There are times when the computer generated imagery becomes sloppy and artificial. This is evident in the scenes featuring RFK stadium and The White House. Those look like video game cut scenes rather than photorealistic images of real locations. In a lower budget, lower profile motion picture, this sort of thing might not be noticeable but it stands out in a film of this caliber.

Singer, returning to the X-Men after a ten year absence (his last venture with them was 2003's X2), has been given the task of completing a reboot that was begun in X-Men: First Class. To do this, he has taken a page from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek handbook - use time travel and the concept of multiverses and have a familiar presence provide the linkage. In Star Trek, that was Leonard Nimoy's Spock Prime. In X-Men: Days of Future Past, it's Wolverine. As a bonus, we also get Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellan's Magneto as well as a bunch of other familiar faces. For those who felt The Last Stand was a poor exit for many of these characters, X-Men: Days of Future Past should at least salve the wound in part.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the third superhero film in less than two months and, even though this one is demonstrably different than its predecessors, superhero fatigue could diminish its box office potential.

This film's strong side is the combination of the first generation and second generation cast building up in a nostalgic momentum, but also the contrast of campy past and dark future works very well.

I'm gonna be a little too honest here: I bingewatched all the X-Men movies, so I often forget about this movie. Many times I get confused when someone mentions a scene from this movie, and I'm like, "wait, it happened in THIS movie? I thoughtI'm gonna be a little too honest here: I bingewatched all the X-Men movies, so I often forget about this movie. Many times I get confused when someone mentions a scene from this movie, and I'm like, "wait, it happened in THIS movie? I thought it happened in First Class/Apocalypse!" And I'd prefer admitting that it's my fault than it being the movie's fault.

X-Men: Days of the Future Past is what I'd call the movie that bridges X-Men: First Class with the other canonical movies, and at the same time also helps in eliminating the bad movies like The Last Stand and Origins. The movie begins with, as usual, mutants being attacked and eliminated. So to save all of them, Wolverine goes back in time and stop Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, a defence contractor. Wolverine reached the 1970s, when he was still a mutant without vibranium. And to set planes in motion, he has to find Charlex Xavier, Magneto, Beast and Mystique.

Bolivar Trask used Mystique's powers to create Mutant Hunting Robots. In the beginning they were only meant to be used to fight in the Vietnam war, but seeing how Mystique and Magneto revealed themselves, they decided to use the robots to hunt down the mutants itself. They didn't see whether mutants are also sentient beings or not, they just wanted to have them eliminated. And that's when the roles of money and power play. It was on the order of President Nixon that Bolivar decided to make those robots, which President Nixon had ordered only because of Bolivar's influence. So in a way it was a loop of blame.

And when Professor X, Wolverine and Quicksilver reach Magneto to save him, we finally get to see the fabled Quicksilver scene, where he takes down all the prison guards single handedly. It was the most iconic moment from the movie, and no amount of appreciation can praise it as much as it deserves. The modern day scenes were also adding to the tension, and in the end when Mystique is left with the choice whether to kill Bolivar or not, it is a quite tense moment whether the mutants in the modern time will survive or not. In the end we see that all the mutants who had died in the previous movies had also come back to life, and the franchise was brought back to where Bryan Singer had left it in X2.

Normally it is very difficult to reboot a franchise (read Sonic 06). Not only do you have to understant the major events that need to ve removed in order to fix the franchise, you also have to make the reboot-turning movie really good, otherwise it will just contribute to being the hot garbage that the other movies of the franchise are. And that's the reason why I believe this movie is underrated. It single handedly fixed a failing franchise, joined the acclaimed prequel into the main timeline and became a success both critically and financiallly. It deserves to be one of the most iconic X-Men movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writers of this very exciting film were clearly BIG fans of the original Matrix, and, by extension, Plato's Cave. Beyond the obvious use of the name Sentinels, the future sequences were very similar to the out-of-the-matrix mothership, and the past sequences/locations were similar to the inside-the-matrix sequences. Not literally, but the sense of urgency and juxtaposition. See it and decide for yourself. Beyond that comparison, the acting in this film is superb. Best superhero flick of the summer - not a tough task. Expand

It boasts many exciting action scenes (particularly the slow-mo scene + the final battle happening in the two timelines simultaneously), and these scenes are expertly executed by the very talented director Bryan Singer.

However, my favorite X-Men movie is still First Class. While it didn't have great action as Days of Future Past, it had better drama. You could feel the struggle of the characters, particularly that of Mystique, Beast, and Magneto.

This installment also has drama; but the big number of characters, and the distribution of screen time among them, prevents their struggle to be given enough time to be compelling. I believe Xavier's arc could have had more emotional resonance to it, as well as the future Xavier and Magneto finally reconciling their differences. The final scene of Wolverine back in school was very nice, though.

I would've also appreciated if the story made more use of the background setting (Vietnam), the same way First Class used its own (Cuban Missile Crisis).

All in all, it's a very entertaining X-Men movie. It's definitely among the finest installments in the franchise, but i really feel it could have been more than that. It could have been a classic, on the same level as a certain Batman movie that exceeded all expectations back in it's day. I can't help but feel a bit disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A pretty good movie. Not exactly what I was hoping for as a follower of the X-Men lore, but it does what it tries to pretty well. And you don't need much knowledge of the previous movies to enjoy it. The use of the Sentinels was kinda disappointing, but I was okay with that considering they weren't the main focus of the movie anyway, and they could have done much worse with the lore.

Other than that, the fact that this movie pretty much eliminates X-Men 3 from the movie cannon is a big plus. So nice to see that junk just removed entirely.

It's a pretty worthwhile watch for both the non-X-Men vets and those that are long-time fans.

The innovative use of each mutant's powers make some of the action sequences utterly unique (the use of portals is particularly effective). There is a bit of an Inception feel to parts of the film flicking back between the past and the future. This is no criticism as far as I'm concerned. Even the 3D is pretty good, though not necessary.

Given the sheer number of characters involved it is inevitable that some get a bit short-shrift: It is no understatement to say that Storm has about twenty words in the entire movie, Havoc gets about a minute, even Bolivar Trusk - ostensibly a main villain - does not have enormous screen time. However that serves even more to make sure you don't take your eyes of the film; this one requires far more engagement than, say, Godzilla. Again, not a criticism.

The time travel element does raise a few contradictions - particularly for the ending. I won't spoil it as, despite its flaws, it is a brilliant end to a great film. One footnote: those waiting for the post-credit sequence will find it very confusing if not well-versed in the comics. It also really IS post credits, so you have to wait the best part of ten minutes for it.

All in all, a good film that carries on from the excellent First Class and makes far better use of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen than Last Stand did. Thoroughly recommend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most of the cast from First class returns 10 years later...This is the best part of the movie...

The problems begin by adding Professor X in the future when in xmen 3 he dies. Yeah I know he shows up in another body in the after credits, but that body is not the same. He should have just showed up at the end with everyone else. My next problem is shoehorning wolverine into this movie. It was annoying in Xmen first class and its even more annoying making him the protagonist in this movie. But I understand he had to be there to erase the mistakes of those 5 movies which were Xmen1-3 and the 2 wolverine movies. I loved this idea. But this would have worked better if there was no wolverine.

In the comic kitty pride was the one who went back in time. But it would not have worked in this film because she was not born yet. This would have been a great way to introduce quicksilver using his speed to go back in time...Wait...Where have I seen that before? Anyway why not introduce a new mutant that can time travel or send bishop back like she was doing to at the beginning of the movie.

Now comes the part with quicksilver. Why don't we see Emma frost or Scarlet witch and since its 10 years later why doesn't quicksilver look like a 9 year old?

The other thing they forgot to mention is Nightcrawlers birth and Azazel being the father. Then there's the beast transformation that never was explained. Lastly Magneto using train rails to control the Sentinels in which they still disobey him.

I wish they address some of these matters in the next movie. So for now its a good sequel to First class.

An all-star ensemble delivers one of the better and more captivating superhero movie in recent time, despite the use of a rather mystifying time travel plot. They do a remarkable job of keeping the audience invested to the characters, each with brimming personality to ensure there's never a dull moment. Visually, the movie is captivating, its contrast tone bridges the colorful 70s and severely bleak future impeccably. It also appropriately utilizes good humor throughout the seemingly melancholy plot.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is an ambitious movie, it brings the newer cast from First Class as well as the older trilogy, plus Hugh Jackman. The time traveling gimmick could be a puzzling one, and in some occasions there are tricky twists that rely on heavy expositions. However, the movie pulls it off quite neatly with balanced pacing. The complexity doesn't divert the focus away from relationship of characters, most of which are always in peril. Many of the cast are capable to lead a movie by their own, but the movie doesn't feel bloated because they are so many involved. Director Bryan Singer cleverly seams the characters' tales together; the present chemistry produces engaging interaction between them.

The bulk of the story occurs in 1973, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence take most of the spotlight. They perform admirably, each showcasing emotional baggage and entwined history together. Hugh Jackman fits into the party fairly well, he has been Wolverine for so long, he just naturally meshes together with the younger X-Men. Peter Dinklage provides a unique antagonist. X-Men movies are notoriously filled with military men as villains, it's nice to see someone more dynamic and with less reliance to violence.

Effects are done beautifully. The future battles are spectacular, not to mention the choreography gracefully combines the mutants' power into the fray. I personally like the intricacy of Blink's ability which allows her to use multiple portals. Her scenes are few, but very well done. The slow motion effect looks wonderful and melee combat is performed effectively, especially Mystique's acrobatic dances. There's lingering retro ambiance for 70s, a simple touch of familiarity. One minor blemish is the lighting for future setting might be a tad too dark at times to fully appreciate the graphic.

The prevalent flaw of time travel gimmick is the impact actions supposedly have on the future, this movie is no exception. There are a few instances where characters act rather brashly just in case it may hopefully change the future, a couple decisions are questionable as well, it's hard to believe experienced mutants with special powers would do impulsive action. It also tries to add prejudice theme, but seeing Jennifer Lawrence, even with blue skin, having self-confident issue is like seeing a supermodel complaining she's fat. All the flaws are just little hindrance, they barely affect the gripping performance of the talents.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is arguably the best of the franchise, it will entertain viewers with exquisite acting, finely pace story and delightfully likeable characters.

Nice to see Bryan Singer back at the X-Men helm. He's clearly been missed since his departure.

Days of future past does a fantastic job melding all the movies together and bringing the X-universe back on track. Singer's direction is noticeable as everyone and everything in every scene does it's part well.

However, as a bit of a fanboy of the comics, I am a little disappointed that some of the trailered characters (Warparth, Blink, Sunspot, etc.) played really small roles. Still, for the short time they spend on screen, they still check really awesome and are done justice (unlike the over saturated mess that was Last Stand.)

I was a little curious to the casting of Peter Dinklage. He plays the role extremely well, but feels a bit out of place. Fair play on the writers not putting in any short jokes (as there was a ton of opportunity to do so.)

Hats off to James McAvoy, a stunning portrayal of Xavier, again. Michael Fassbender is Magneto, to the point that he seriously outshines Sir Ian McKellen (who is now obviously far too old to continue to play Magneto.)

If I had to have gripe, it is that effects didn't really blow me away (while I hated Last Stand, it did have some spectacular scenes,) but that's not a bad thing since it did a far better job and telling a rich coherent story.

Overall:
While the effects may be toned down a little (from my point of view) X-Men Days of Future Past managed to tell a great story and represented its franchise fantastically! Bryan Singer: Welcome back!

Also what a great post credit scene! Can't wait for the next movie.

Side Note:
If anyone from the production team for the next move reads this: Please, please, please put Psylocke into the next movie. Properly, not that abomination from Last Stand.

Luckily, the X-men movies stay on a roll with First Class, The Wolverine and now this. The movie did an excellent job of balancing the story lines and the acting was top notch. Glad to see the X-men franchise is back on track!

The Great: My favorite part of the film is the speed mutant. It was just so cool to watch him in action. But if he had stuck around for the rest of the film, it would be too easy.

Great ending as well - we get to see all the changes in the timeline, and showing Jean and Scott as a small tribute and connection to the original X-men trilogy was nice. But most importantly, the older timeline is still remembered by Logan; so the previous timeline we saw still holds some meaning.

The good: Great humor - especially with Wolverine. Great action. The young versions of the heroes were handled very well - like making Young Charles a drunk / druggie, so he has something to overcome if he wants to save the mutants. They did a good job with building the characters of the three key heroes - Mystique, Xavier, and Magneto. The chemistry between Fassbender and McAvoy was great just like in "X-men: First Class", and I liked how even though they reconcile, Magneto still decides to do things his own way and act as the villain.

The bad: very formulaic story with tons of exposition. Like Young Charles not wanting to help Logan and then agreeing after a 10 second shot of Raven's picture. Or the X-men in real time being attacked right when Logan is about to succeed in his mission. The plot was incredibly predictable and everything is done by the Hollywood formula. Also, some of the character decisions (primarily Magneto) were pretty stupid - if he had just talked to Mystique after they stopped the assassination, there would be no point for the escalation that followed.

Overall though a very solid entry in the superhero genre and the X-men series.

Maybe the action was less impressive than in other X-Men movies, I don't know what fans think of this but judging by the response everybody seem to be happy with the end result and so am I; I recommend this one if you want a good super-hero movie.

It's a fun superhero flick but it's no Nolan's Batman.

If you've never seen any X-men movies, this probably isn't a great entry point to the franchise.

X-Men: Days of Future Past exceeds expectations and dazzles throughout; from the opening sequence featuring old and new mutants allying against some Sentenals -- who, minor SPOILER alert, are winning -- to one of the funniest scenes in X-Men history, featuring Quicksilver and some slow-motion badassery. And for the ladies, there's even some minor man candy, in which Hugh Jackman is seen again flaunting his 40-something-year-old body in a short nude sequence.

The casual viewers might find it impossible to catch onto all the characters at the beginning, but Days of Future Past handles this story exceedingly well, choosing to maintain the attention on a select few characters. As usual, Jennifer Lawrence steals the spotlight with her sassy, sexy portrayal of the classic Mystique, however, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy are excellent in their roles as well and often maintain control over a storyline you'd think Logan himself usually ends up stealing.

Any casual or longtime certified X-Man shouldn't turn down the opportunity to see one of the finer entries in the X-Men franchise. It's a conceptually and visually stunning superhero story that's fast-paced and has enough dazzling direction, exhilarating action sequences, and moments of hilarity to make anyone firm believe that the days of X-Men's seemingly inevitable apocalypse -- and no, I'm not referring to the upcoming 2016 sequel -- are now officially over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once again, it’s time for another superhero movie – another superhero sequel to be precise. There have been a lot of these lately, but that seems to be the way of the world. Now, counting all spin-offs and prequels, we’re on the seventh X-Men movie, with an eighth confirmed to be on the way, continuing the franchise that started it all back in 2000. We’ve even got the original director Bryan Singer back in the chair, who previously abandoned the franchise to make the quickly forgotten Superman Returns (2006).

However, rather than take the easy route and reboot it, this film is an ambitious attempt to reconcile the existing storyline, tie up some of the loose ends of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and bring it all together with the cast of prequel X-Men: First Class (2011). The result ends up a little jumbled, and there are loads and loads of characters, and multiple actors playing certain characters, but perhaps that’s to be expected in any film involving time travel as a major plot point.

That’s right, as the title heavily implies, in a Back to the Future-style confusion of tenses, this film is largely set in the ‘70s, sometime after the events of First Class. It’s very easy for me to get behind such a film, chock full of retro vibes, cool cars, leather jackets, burgundy suits, sideburns and Richard Nixon.

Meanwhile in the future, the post-Last Stand world has decayed into a bleak apocalyptic landscape as a result of amazingly advanced mutant-killing robots, which have decimated the population by being too effective – not only do they kill mutants, but they kill those who recessively carry mutant genes and could give birth to mutants in the future.

Naturally, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) must go back in time to the ‘70s and stop these robots from being developed and mass-produced, ironically by preventing the assassination of their inventor, Bolivar Trask, as it was his death that made the US government see mutants as a credible threat and commission the robots. The delightfully sinister and manipulative Trask is played by Game of Thrones’ excellent Peter Dinklage.

Indeed, the cast as a whole is excellent, even if it is large. I never saw First Class, so ‘my’ X-Men remain that classic cast of thespians including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, et al. Happily, they’re all back after so many years, which is great to see, even if they are only given limited screen time. The exception is Hugh Jackman, who inexplicably remains the closest thing to a leading man despite having two spin-offs of his own. Of course, Wolverine’s effortlessly cool, and he’s our temporal fish out of water, so who really cares anyway?

In the past, Wolverine runs into younger versions of all his comrades and nemeses, rounding out the ensemble to include Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). The lines between friend and foe become blurred as Wolverine works hard to redeem the latter two whilst forcing the young Professor X to confront his demons.

Of note is the first appearance in the X-Men saga of the supersonic Quicksilver (Even Peters) who provides one of the most high-octane, humorous and entertaining sequences of the entire film, a super-fast prison break witnessed in slow motion. It’s a shame his character disappears shortly afterwards; probably because his presence would make everything else far too easy for the protagonists.

The mutant saga is skilfully interwoven with mid-20th Century US history, including the Kennedy assassination and the Vietnam War. This sets the scene for a retro globetrotting adventure from Vietnam, to the Peace Conference in Paris, to a final showdown in Washington, D.C. All in all it’s an entertaining thrill ride, which (as its main raison d’être is storyline reconciliation) may alienate newcomers to the saga. However, as I said, I haven’t seen an X-Men film since The Last Stand and I still enjoyed it. It certainly makes me want to watch both First Class and the original trilogy once again. Maybe even the Wolverine spin-offs. Maybe.

The movie is still decent, and I love the story telling because it's pretty solid. However, while the scene from the future is very exciting with all the mutant fights, the past delivers too much of the drama and less the action. My favorite thing of Days of Future Past is, just like everyone else, the fresh portrayal of Quiksilver by Evan Peters. He's a very potential star and I'll still be waiting very enthusiastically for Apocalypse. Though I do have to say it has failed to hold its position on my favorite summer movie this year. Expand

This film is being released in a post-Avengers world, where culmination is king (see DC/WB’s recent Justice League-related moves as evidence), and the X-Men franchise comes into this picture as considerably fractured. The original “modern day” team – Wolverine, Professor X, Cyclops, Storm, etc. – petered out with the third entry, only Wolverine has had any success as a stand-alone spinoff, and the First Class “prequel” was immediately hailed as the best of the entire lot, leaving the original to be forgotten. Rather than reboot the whole shebang or focus on a specific First Class sequel, Singer instead doubles-down and incorporates old and new. Granted, he mitigates some risk by keeping the focus on only the best characters from the two worlds, but his faith in incorporating anyone from the old world other than Wolverine, and his willingness to cut bait on some of the lesser characters from the new world, speaks to his confidence as a filmmaker. Director - Bryan Singer

Starring - Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen

X-Men is the oldest franchise that Marvel currently have in their ever expanding film universe. However it has been surpassed by the Avengers, both in their stand alone films and the juggernaut that was Avengers Assemble. Then Matthew Vaughn's prequel, X-Men: First Class (2011) shot some much needed life back into the series and things started to look up. But could the franchise keep it up?

Now Bryan Singer, director of the first two mutant films, is back and has the mammoth task of combining both sets of actors and giving us a film more credible and entertaining than the dismal X-Men: Last Stand (2006).

Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around Magneto and Professor X (McKellen and Stewart) sending Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back in time to 1973 to see... Magneto and Professor X (Fassbender and McAvoy). Their mission is to change history and prevent the war that will wipe out mutant kind. And thus we go from old cast to new.

James McAvoy plays a broken Charles Xavier with raw anger and sadness, far removed from the all-knowing calm figure of Stewart. He is a joy to watch as he struggles with his power.

Fassbender is also a wonder, never overplaying a role that could have led to scenery chewing of the highest order. The chemistry between both actors is amazing, I just wish they had more time together.

Jennifer Lawrence has made the role of Mystique/Raven her own (Rebecca who??) She is sexy, sassy and focused but has not yet grown into her evil persona of the original films, which means we can truly love her (for now anyway).

And onto Jackman. You just have to look at the posters to see he is supposed to be the star of the film and there is no denying that he has been consistently good even as the films diminished in quality. While he does play an important role in the plot, he sometimes acts as merely a foil for the new cast but what a foil he is.

Special mention goes to Nicholas Hoult's Beast who has grown as a character even if his screen time isn't extensive.

I couldn't write a review without mentioning Quicksilver. I admit that when I first read about the character being included I was sceptical. I truly believed that Singer only did it to piss off Whedon and the folks at the new Avengers film. But Evan Peters is a blast as the super speedy mutant who, despite his limited screen time, makes every scene he's in his own. His performance is an obvious contrast to the serious portrayal that Aaron Taylor Johnson will probably give in Age of Ultron (if the mid-credit scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is anything to go by). Also, there is a cheeky little nod to his parentage; brought a smile to my face.

The film itself is well paced... action and emotion in equal balance. The 131 minute run time passes by without feeling like it is starting to lag.

The mixture of high quality digital and grainy 1970s film is used to great effect.

As with most Marvel films, stay until the end of the credits for a peak into what lies ahead for X-Men.

There are a few niggles I have (at the beginning of the film Wolverine's claws are back to being made from adamantium which pretty much negates anything that happened in The Wolverine) but for the most part Singer brings back the familiar and fans can feel safe in his capable hands.

It was centered around Wolverine, but in terms of storyline was more about Magneto, Mystique, and Charles. The best part of this movie was the scenes with Quicksilver. I've never really seen a good depiction of a super speed character in a superhero movie, but this hit it on the spot. The slow motion was used great in this movie, and all the effects were great! The plot was good as well. This movie was fantastic, and it was my second favorite X-Men movie, but it had some downfalls. This movie had a lot of plot holes like Professor X being alive, Kitty's time traveling, and a bit more. Those knocked it down from 9 to 8, but it still was crazy fun! Expand

I did enjoy First Class, and it's follow up Days of Future past I found myself delighted with the plot and characters. This movie is proof that you don't need large and constant action sequences to make a powerful super hero film. The writing in this movie in fantastic, and the acting it's truly great. No surprise based on the all-star cast.

Now, I do have some complains here. The first one is some of the time travelling logic. Although not bad by any means, is not absolutely bullet proof to logic.

Then, I was disappointing with how little we saw from the "future" X-Men. Their scenes were some of the best in the movie, and thanks to the ending I'm afraid we will never explore the world/characters that pop-out the most in the movie.

Beyond those two flaws, Days of Future past is not only a great movie but is one that I hope challenges other super hero movies to step up their storytelling to the next level.

Oh, and the Quicksilver scene alone is worth watching this movie for. More quicksilver please!

The plot is interesting and well realized but It may have an effect on it's timeline and might get confusing. The action scenes were very good especially the new addition Quicksilver , Evan Peters did a good job, which was one of the most memorable scenes in any X-Men franchise ever.

The characters what makes the X-Men great not the action unlike Apocalypse which they forgot about it.The ensemble of characters here is well delivered and gives some character developments throughout it.

The return of director Bryan Singer had helped the production of this film to make it the best film in the series ( aside from Deadpool if you count that as an X-Men film). The stakes are raised to a higher level as humanity and mutant kind are enslaved by the Sentitles which are robots created for the sole purpose of hunting down mutants. The Sentitles are given a needed update as they have Mystique's power to shape-shift and copy powers to attack their targets. These machines were brutal as the tore people apart and shoot down anything in their path. The film than has Wolverine time travel back to the time line of "First Class". Some had concerns of Wolverine's inclusion in the film since he ad a habit of being the main focus of the other films but thankfully he has a limited role in this film as he is only their to be the metaphorical bridge between both timeline's. Each character feels changed as a result of the events of this film for better or worse and each one has been given more depth than any of the prior films. The one who truly Steals the show is Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask. This iteration of the character has an interesting unstated motivation to destroying these mutants which is implied to be pure jealously which makes his interactions with the mutants interesting to watch. Quicksilver was another great addition with the sequence of his super-speed from his prospective. The slow motion and the music really gives an out-of-body experience on that sequence that I had yet to see another Comic-book film. The action sequences are well choreographed and intense with a lot of attention to detail. It is impressive to have so much happening on screen but still be able to distinguish what is going on. This film is must-see for an superhero let alone X-Man fan. Expand

Similarly to the comic book story of the same name, the X-Men are being hunted and exterminated by Sentinels in a bleak future, so they have to change the past in order to survive in the present.

Wolverine is sent back in time in the early 1970s so that he may prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, an event that proved to be fatal for the mutants. We see a disillusioned Professor X who needs to be convinced about caring for others again, and Magneto first deciding to do the right thing and then returning to his criminal tendencies. We are introduced to Quicksilver who gives us one of the most spectacular slow motion scenes ever. Magneto steals the show when he tears a whole Stadium from the ground, flies in the air with it and then throws it around the White House, surrounding US President Nixon and Trask with the intent to kill them. The movie's real protagonist though is Mystique, who must be logically and emotionally convinced to not assassinate Trask, instead of just being forced to do so by Professor X's telepathic powers.

Days of Future Past also served as a sort of retcon for the X-Men movie franchise, changing the characters' backstories established in the old X-Men movies. Thanks to that, 20th Century Fox are now making a new movie themed around the Dark Phoenix saga, to make up for the disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand.

There are a lot of characters, plotlines, and relationships as the film tries to continue the story from both First Class and The Last Stand while tying these together. While the film did feel like a little too much at times everything felt necessary for the story and it was all balanced well. Brian Synger returns to give us one of the better films in the franchise with fun action, an engaging story, and great characters with lots of solid relationships. Fans of the three X-Men films that are considered good (1, 2, and First Class) will enjoy this movie as it is another solid entry and the ending will make diehard fans extremely happy. It may not be the best X-Men film, best superhero film, or best of the summer but considering how this franchise was struggling five years ago it’s a miracle its been able to bounce back without completely rebooting itself. While I wish the franchise would just end on this film as the ending does provide a nice sense of closure, especially for the future storyline, they are going to continue. If this franchise is destined to go on for a while, my only hope is that it we keep the ball in the air continuing to provide fun and entertaining films for many years to come. Expand

Damn. This was disappointing. Lets just start off by saying this is a good movie, but not the fantastic film that I was led to believe by all the positive reviews. There are things that I loved, things that I hated, and things I foundDamn. This was disappointing. Lets just start off by saying this is a good movie, but not the fantastic film that I was led to believe by all the positive reviews. There are things that I loved, things that I hated, and things I found mind-boggling.

Things that I loved: 1) The introduction and huge importance of the Sentinels. It's about time one of the films introduce the Sentinels, which play a big role in the overall story of the X-Men. I also like the depiction of these mutant hunters. It did a great job presenting a huge threat to X-Men and all mutants in the universe. 2) The concept of time travel. I like the idea of time travel in movies, and it always interests me how each story takes the idea in a different direction. In this version, it's your consciousness that inhabits your original body in the past, and not your whole being. Great idea! 3) Quicksilver. This guy's ability and attitude fit the film perfectly! Professor X and Magneto have such a serious demeanor, and he brought some good comic relief. He also had the best sequence in the whole film. 4) The action sequences were very well done and entertaining... but this leads into...

Things that I hated: 5) There are way too many action sequences. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. You have to balance out the action with the character stories, other wise you as a viewer end up not caring about what's happening. 6) Mystique's character. Wow! I usually think Jennifer Lawrence does an amazing acting job, but her character was written so one dimensionally... No one could have played this character and made her interesting. She might have said the same speech 3 times in the film. Yawn. 7) Magneto's character. I LOVED Michael Fassbender's Magneto in First Class, because he had great depth. It's the complete opposite in this film. I have no idea what his motivations are in this film. They spent so much time on Professor X's character, that we got very little out of Magneto beyond him just doing bad things. 8) *SPOILER* Everything that happened in the original trilogy has become pointless!!! Remember all the pain and suffering us fans went through when each X-Men made huge sacrificed for the greater good of humanity? Well I guess non of it matters anymore, because as a result of the ending everything has been null and voided. Why Hollywood, Why?! *END SPOILER* 9) The 3D is ugly. Ok, this is not a knock on the film per se, but there were so many sequences where the background looked completely fake. Honestly, I couldn't tell you if it was the film's bad use of green screen, or the terrible use of 3D to create depth in the background. It was a big distraction for me.

Things I found mind boggling: 10) Professor X's magical medicine. Why does taking a drug that reduces your mutant ability also negate your inability to walk after having a bullet hit your spine and paralyze you? What purpose did having Professor X walking around in this film serve other than the convenience of placing him in the same scenarios as the other characters. Thinking back... was there any scene in this film they couldn't shoot with him in a wheel chair? He does end up in a wheel chair anyways. He was taking the drug in the beginning the get the voices out of his head... he never said walking was important to him. Whatever... 11) Magneto's ability extends past metal bending. I'm not an engineer, and I'm assuming that Magneto isn't either, yet Magneto is able to weave metal through the interiors of the first models of the Sentinels to control them. Huh?! How does Magneto magically know the circuitry within the Sentinels without dismantling them first? This felt really dumb to me... but I guess it gave the audience a good chance to see how Magneto can make metal do whatever he wants. 12) The future. Terminator 2 anyone? I'm sorry, but this future was very unbelievable to me. The human vs. mutant war desolated the whole Earth?! I didn't see a war... I just saw innocent mutant being hunted down like dogs by the Sentinels. Where was the backlash from the mutant population that destroyed the planet? I didn't see that... so we have to assume that humans killing off the mutant population with this Sentinels caused their planet to become unlivable. Well that's dumb, because the humans just screwed themselves, because they have to live on the planet too. Also, where are these Sentinels coming from? Must be from some sort of factory, because the humans (which we never see), are pumping these things out by the hundreds. There has to be a place that's not destroyed, where the humans are living in a better place than what we're able to see. It would be nice to have a face behind all of this... the Sentinels are not controlling and producing themselves... right?

Don't get me wrong... I did say quite a few negative things about the film, but this is still a good movie to watch. Just make sure to turn off your brain.…

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Day of Future Past is a fantastic superhero movie in every way, shape and form... except for the gaping flaw that is its premise. Don't get me wrong, I understand that one must suspend their level of disbelief greatly in order to enjoy these films. Newsflash, I love superhero movies so clearly the suspension of disbelief isn't the issue. There is a difference between being willing to accept something as possible and there being a monumental plot hole, which was the case with this film.

***SPOILERS***
The movie is set WAY into the future where these "robots" called Sentinels have effectively wiped out all mutants in existence and a large portion of the human population as well. Because these Sentinels are too much for the X-Men, they conceive of a plan to send Professor X's consciousness back in time to his younger self, when the Sentinels program was in its infancy in the 1970's, so he can stop Mystique from killing the creator of the program and then being captured and experimented on, which is what results in the Sentinels being the unstoppable force they become. Because sending someone's consciousness back decades would physically tear them apart, the only man for the job is none other than Wolverine.

And that's the premise of the film. Did nobody else scream "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!" when reading that? Allow me to clarify once again. I am willing to accept that there are invincible robots, that mutants exist, and that you can send someone's consciousness back in time decades for an extended period of time. I have no problem with any of those concepts because I have suspended my disbelief completely. However, if you know who creates this horrible program and you can send someone back in time, wouldn't you just send Logan a little further back and kill the creator, effectively eliminating the threat of the Sentinels before they ever exist?

There are other plot holes throughout the film but I'd categorize those as relatively minor, akin to the ones you will typically find, not just in superhero movies but in films in general, so I won't go into detail on those. I'll simply say that a 9 or 10 caliber superhero movie with incredible acting, especially from James McAvoy, great special effects, and awesome action scenes easily drops to a 6 or 7 caliber movie because every single dramatic element was clouded with an "If they did this obvious thing, none of this crap would've happened". (6 + 7)/2 = 6.5, which rounds to 7. That's about the best explanation possible for my reasoning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (2011, 7/10) transposes the mutants’ universe into 1960s and allows some new blood to play their younger selves, X-MEN series has officially opened a new chapter. Three years later, the original helmer (X-MEN 2000, 7/10 and X2 2003, 7/10) Bryan Singer returns to the director chair to push a reset button to nullify all the damages done by Brett Ratner’s X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006, 7/10). In this latest episode, the story devises a time-travel mission to the past in order to save the entire world from the Sentinel apocalypse.

I was impressed considering these type of movies are not up my alley. The action was consistently engaging and innovative. The story doesn't get weirdly obscure like other similar movies.

Clearly a way for the franchise to do a reset on where its universe went. The only issue now is that the actors of the original characters are all getting older so it will never be the same... regardless the movie hit all the right notes butClearly a way for the franchise to do a reset on where its universe went. The sentinels didn't really remind me at all of what I remember from the cartoons. Expand

This movie was pretty good, not fantastic, but still good enough to make X-Men fans happy. This is arguably one of the better X-Men movies (definitely better than than the Last Stand and Origins Wolverine) but still, not the best.

ehhhh, see it if you must. i loved the first half of "The Wolverine", and enjoyed "First Class" enough to buy it. This one is better than Wolverine, but worse than First Class. I think this movie might be better at home, sitting on your couch. seriously. Expand

The acting is very good for this type of movies standards, and they mix past and future nicely. However, the emotional touch does not become that effective as it seems it is meant to be, and it is also true that it does not bring anything new to the table. Overall it has brough the X Men franchise to an unexpected forefront again. Nothing memorable though. Expand
