It felt like a ginormous retcon that only ended at the same place we started all those years ago.....except Wolverine has a bit of grey in his hair while everyone else somehow looks exactly the same as they did in the first movie.

A lot of the mutant powers werent shown very well and were tweaked in order to fit whatever grand idea Singer had in his head. From Bishop's absorption power being turned into a glorified super soaker to QuickSilver being more of a time-controller than a mutant who could run faster than sound. A small gripe that slightly cheapened some scenes for me.

The plot, pacing, and characterization were what really brought the movie down for me. A lot of it was just sub-par.

This film though is an exception. It has an incredible cast of actors, from up-and-comers like Omar Sy and James McAvoy to veterans like Patrick Stewart or Sir Ian McKellen. The film also a great balance between political intrigue and fun superhero action. That is why I believe this is not only the best superhero film of all time, but also one of the best political thrillers of all time. I give Days Of Future Past a 9 out of 10 stars. Expand

The franchise: to say the least, has struggled without his guidance. Many saw X-Men: The Last Stand as a disappointing end to the original trilogy, it was clear to many that 20th Century Fox didn’t know who to bring in to fill Singer’s shoes. Then X-Men Origins: Wolverine happened, and it seemed like the franchise would never return to the former glory it was at X-2. Then X-Men: First Class was released 2 years later, telling the origins of Professor X, Magneto and Mystique from the original trilogy, as well as introducing its own set of characters. While it impressed fans and critics, giving audiences hope that the franchise was returning to its former glory, many were confused towards the canon it had with the original trilogy, Wolverine had a cameo halfway through the film, making fans wonder how this movie and the others were linked.
Days of Future Past answers some major fanbase questions that have been asked forever, in an excellent way, giving a clear timeline of events that all audiences can understand. A timeline that not only connects the past (Creation of the X-Men in First Class) and the present (Following the regrets Wolverine faces for the losses he suffered since joining the team in the original movies), but also introducing a whole new future universe for the X-Men franchise, which unfortunately, wasn’t explored a minuscule as much as it should’ve been, with the excellent choices made that built on the universe.
The movie begins in the future, in a Terminator (post Judgement Day) looking world, as Trask Industries (ever notice Trask can be jumbled around to spell Stark? Iron Man doesn’t believe in equal mutant rights… philanthropist indeed) continue to send Sentinels after mutant and human kind alike, destroying the world. The X-Men, much less in number than they once were, have only one hope, to send a mutant back in time, and stop Trask Industries from gaining Mystique’s DNA, which is how they made their Sentinels so unstoppable, as they adapt to every mutant’s power that they face, in the way Mystique can shape shift. As Wolverine has a healing factor, they believe he is the only one whose mind can survive the journey to a key event, stopping Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, which leads to the organisation eventually capturing her and using her DNA to build the unstoppable Sentinels that are wiping out the X-Men of the future. To do so Wolverine must reunite Charles and Erik, at a time when they hate each other the most.
With the cast from First Class reprising their roles, once again delivering top notch performances that suit Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, but also bringing new elements of their characters to the table, such as Charles' depression and neglect of his powers and the responsibility he has when Logan comes to him from the future, begging for his help. With the support of Quicksilver (despite the cringe worthy costume, the character had a great persona, he was one of the coolest parts of the film) they free Magneto and go to stop Mystique from assassinating Trask. From there, the film is non-stop breath taking action, and I wouldn’t want to ruin anything else for you. However, I will say that the X-Men franchise is now on an open road thanks to the events of the film, anything is possible from here on out.
Bolivar Trask, played by Peter Dinklage (mostly known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones) brings an excellent performance to how Trask is: cold hearted and bitter towards mutants. He demonstrates how his life is consumed with the fear of mutants he as, but also admiring their very existence, and that he simply wants to protect humanity from the next step of its own evolution. Although, if anyone steals the movie, it has to be Jenifer Lawrence’s performance as Mystique. She shows a clear understanding of who the character is, and the dilemmas she faces throughout the whole film, with the desire to protect herself as well as her kind, and questioning who can help her achieve this successfully between Charles and Erik, and also who she feels more for. She becomes the main focus of the events that take place in DOFP and earns the amount of screen time the character deserves for the deep complexity she has. James McAvoy’s depressed Xavier makes the audience see the character in a way they never have before, enraged with the losses Erik caused him, taking his best friend along with his ability to walk if he doesn’t take a medication Beast designed to help him walk. This costs him the use of his powers and in the end, Charles has to make the choice as to what is more important. McAvoy also adds to the brilliant writing the film has with his captivating performance that shows when Charles Xavier became Professor X.
One major issue I found with the film was that everything in the future is extremely underused, so much potential development was cut so the story of the past could be focused on. Which makes sense, a film can only be so long, and the past is the major plot point that Logan needed to change, but the problem is that this still leaves fans with multiple questions. How did Charles come back? How did he contact Magneto? How did they discover Trask Industries’ plan, and agree to work together? What happened to all the other X-Men in this future? Bringing Xavier back was never even fully explained, he came back to life in the post credits scene of The Last Stand, and Logan found out at the very end of The Wolverine, but what they fail to explain is how Charles was able to come back. This was something the movies had been hinting at forever, that eventually got swept under a rug. A whole new cast of team members is introduced, including Bishop, Warpath and Blink (Bishop being one of my favourite X-Men, this was obviously very frustrating the moment the movie ended) but these characters get such little development. They’re introduced at the start, fighting the Sentinels the past created, clearly struggling. As Wolverine gets sent back in time, all the future gets connected to are the moments that Shadowcat struggles to hold a link between him and the past, (also, how did she get those powers? That was never explained either. I read it was to do with the Rogue scenes that got cut from the film) but I really wish that we could’ve seen more of the future team, without the development the past or present cast members had, they feel like extremely two dimensional characters. Which, in context with the comics, they certainly aren’t.
This doesn’t mean they give bad performances, Ian and Patrick are as good as ever, along with all previous cast members who return. It just means the film itself never intended to focus on this part of the universe, it’s just used to introduce what happened to the X-Men after The Last Stand in a way that won’t take 3 additional movies to explain. While the exposition feels rushed, it delivers a large amount of information in one go that everyone can follow. The events aren’t made overly complex, even kids would probably understand what’s happening. So, while the future had potentially great narratives which were neglected, the movie has to be applauded for the way in which it introduced what became of the X-Men in the future to the audience.
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine isn’t just a badass in this movie, he’s also an extremely relatable character for the audience. As we see what he sees, he becomes much easier to connect with, an understanding of his motives is easily gained. The audience sees the world he came from, and, like Logan, they know what’s at stake when he’s sent back in time, and why he’s so persistent with getting the help of those who he was told to. While others, like Charles, struggle to understand it. This makes the film much more suspenseful, because it makes you really want to see Logan succeed, because you’ve seen the events that took place in the past the way he sees them, before being thrown back to try and change it from ever happening.
*SPOILER PARAGRAPH*
I briefly mentioned earlier that DOFP puts the X-Men franchise on an open road, I wasn’t kidding. Literally anything after the events of First Class (Summing up, this includes the trilogy, Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine) now never happened. When Wolverine returns to the future, he sees so many X-Men who were once gone now back that it’ll almost certainly blow your mind. As DOFP ends, the question on everybody’s mind is “What happens next?” hopefully you stuck around, because if you did you saw Apocalypse (En Sabah Nur as he’s known at the time) in Egypt, building one of the pyramids, with four horsemen beside him, and an uncountable amount of Egyptians bowing to him. I honestly saw this coming. The post credits scene was just The Avengers all over again, as Fox clearly want to compete with Marvel Studios, but I certainly thought he looked awesome. With Bryan Singer directing once more, we’re almost certainly in for a treat, and I can’t wait to see my favourite X-Men villain on the big screen come 2016.
*Conclusion*
Many are calling DOFP the best superhero movie since The Dark Knight, I’m inclined to agree. While I love everything the MCU makes, they’re still diving into serious territory with the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and DOFP instantly returned the former glory the X-Men movies were once at when X-2 was first released. Marvel Studios’ movies are always certainly action packed and continue to be visual spectacles, but this is the deepest story arc in a superhero movie for a long time that has managed to genuinely exceed the expectations of critics and audiences alike. The X-Men franchise has certainly caught our attention once more, giving a taste at the potential the movies now once again have. I hope X-Men: Apocalypse continues to give the quality DOFP did, packing a huge punch, to the point it slaps audiences in the face as the credits roll.

It wasn't until 2011 that Matthew Vaughn sparked some new life into the series, by telling a rousing origin story that almost felt like a reboot to the franchise. Re-enter Singer, who brings the best of both his films and Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” by; combining the dark, seedy plotting of his first two movies with energized period stylings of "First Class". All this is achieved, while blending the fantastic cast of both films via an inventive time traveling plot that surprisingly works on all levels. Based on the comic book story-line of the same name; Wolverine is sent to the past by Kitty Pride (since when could she do that) in an attempt to change history and prevent an event that results in the Sentinel program; a program that dooms both humans and mutants. Little (and sometimes noticeable) characterizations that contradicts the previous films does bother the geek inside me, and I’m sure many can agree; but I’m willing to forgive and forget this time around. By incorporating socio-political topics (typical of X-Men) with an intriguing sci-fi premise "Days of Future Past" does far more than just entertain. But what I liked most was the balance of characters on display and the performances behind them. Whether it’s James McAvoy’s world-weary younger Xavier, Michael Fassbender’s morally disturbed younger Magneto or their introspective older selves (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively); the cast members bask in whatever limelight the film affords them. Though I’m still not convinced of Jennifer Lawrence’s rendition of Mystique, I appreciate what the writers were doing with character’s arc. “Days of Future” is fast, smart; most of our characters are well developed and effectively reintroduced; even lesser characters get their fleeting moments to shine. The sparing action sequences were well staged; and one thing I always admired about Singer was his way of defining the characters' abilities through elaborately staged set pieces. Kudos to that Quicksilver slow-mo scene. The dystopian future and vintage period setting was brought to life by nice production designs and the visual effects dazzle unlike any other X-Men film. It’s up there as one of the finest X-Men films (second only to “X2: X-Men United”) and certainly one of the better superhero films in recent times. Entertainment is guaranteed! Expand

I mean, of course for this X-Men movie, with time travel it is to expect more. More encounters, more dilemmas about the quantum physics involved, I was expecting all that plus a more spread participation between the characters. The elements are all there but, the thing is, maybe this time, as usually happens the plot was managed by suits, re-managed by the suits bosses and so on. It is not a masterpiece, could be in the hand of a Kubrick, - any other name here would be a blasphemy but... - a Spielberg, a Zemeckis. I'd love to see, for one time some risk being taken. But, I guess Bryan Singer is the only guy not up to risks at this point. It's a shame, the story sure should be better explored. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely the BEST X-men movie put out so far! After the first 30-45 minutes of the movie i found myself rubbing my eyes, yawning and looking at my watch often. I swear I must 1 of 3 Black guys who think Halle Berry is the worst Storm ever. I mean damn the only thing the got right with Halle Berry playing Storm is that she is Black! I actually cheered when the Sentinels killed her. Its not too many things I can point that is wrong with this movie other than...1. Quicksilver looked corny as hell (but he was pretty dope) 2. Bishop was undersold. 3. The Sentinels didn't say anything...(in the comics and on the show they always said mutant detected) 4. THe Sentinels looked like the Destroyer from the first Thor movie. 5. Where the HELL was Scarlet Witch (maybe they are saving her for the Avengers 3 movie where they will have Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver join the Avengers). There are more things i find wrong with this movie but I guess by now you get the point! Days of Future Past was by far the best X-men movie but I sincerely hope Fox gives up the rights to X-men or better yet at least collaborate with Marvel Studios on the next X-men movie, seeing as how the Movie will more than likely have Apocalypse (X-men The Age of Apocalypse) which might introduce Archangel. Somewhere along the along the lines I got side tracked...oh well back to Days of future past! Like I said before X-men Days of Future Past was not a horrible movie but damn it was not great neither. Magneto is a schizophrenic in this film, making major decisions snappishly on a whim: deciding to avert the disastrous future by preventing a murder at one moment and then deciding to kill that same intended victim plus the president (which would no doubt leads to disaster) in the next moment.

Schizophrenic characters are hallmarks of a bad story.

However, while the scene from the future is very exciting with all the mutant fights, the past delivers too much of the drama and less the action. There were a lot ofThe months leading up to X-Men Days of Futures Past all I could say was that it looked like garbage. At one point, sometime after the atrocious Carl’s Jr. commercials, I assumed it would be somewhere around Spider-Man 3. There were a lot of reasons I felt so strongly about it, mainly that I feel the old cast should have been liquidated and re-casted. The trailers all made the movie appear to be unwatchable, but I was pleasantly surprised.

While I still stand strong about the old cast being bad, they didn’t take over this movie at all. Another huge complaint I had going into it was how unbelievably stupid Evan Peter’s Quicksilver looked. If the crappy GRAY hair and poorly dyed eyebrows weren’t enough to upset the awful costume made my stomach churn. With that said I feel the 15-20 minutes Quicksilver is on screen is some of the best moments of DoFP. Evan Peter’s was hilarious and his acting was on point, he truly held his own next to Fassbender and McAvoy, who were amazing as always. The acting I was most disappointed with had to be Jennifer Lawrence. She felt flat and lifeless from start to finish and it may be one of her worse roles to date.

Another fatal flaw of the movie was the mistreatment of certain mutant characters! As always they worked hard to make Wolverine shine, while other important characters get shoved into the background. One point in the movie they discuss all the mutants that died between First Class and Days of Futures Past, but never once showed a flashback or memorial of these characters who are crucial to the universe. They also introduced some characters without discussing their importance or strength, I’m talking about Bishop here, and I hardly understand why they bothered at all!

With all that said Days of Futures Past was a complete fan service for comic book readers. Lots of Easter eggs and nerdy nods had me sitting on the edge of my seat biting my nails with joy! The after credit sequence induced high-pitched squeals even. X-Men: Days of Futures Past was better than I was expecting, I don’t think it’s the amazing movie everybody keeps saying it is. There were problems that were hard to overlook, but in all a fun and enjoyable movie. ShaunaOH gives X-Men: Days of Futures Past a 6.7/10!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In every level this movie has been the most complete marvel movie ever if not the greatest: The scenario is saturated with events that does not seem to distract you away from the main plot, we have a justified and well portrayed villain (magneto) which is non-existant in the marvel universe (except loki who might and probably should be considered as an anti hero after thor 2). I also do not know any other marvel movie that keeps this many characters and does not give you the feeling of the movie is overcrowded with too many shallow characters. The movie is emotional; not in a very dramatic way but it is able capture its thematic emotion: "Hope" because you get to feel some of the characters' feelings of desperation and their path of self destruction, you also get to see that this may fail no matter what you do but at the end hope wins and you get to experience this effectively due to great performances of the main characters. It tells an endearing story of the struggles of survival for these mutants as they are picked off one by one by the monstrous and vicious Sentinels. The X-Men have to work together with their past selves, in order to secure their future. It is a fun and highly well told story that pays of not only in the action, but also emotionally.

Bryan Singer is at his best as he directs a large cast of mutants through an emotionally endearing story that will leave viewers in awe of what is happening and what is to come for the franchise. I really appreciated a lot of the stylized directing, it really made the film that much more fun. The visuals are used impressively and the action sequences are directed incredibly well. I was literally at the edge of my seat every time the characters were in combat as I literally felt that they might lose their lives. The script is packed with great character moments and we get to learn a lot more about our favorite mutants. The time traveling is handled incredibly well and as long as you don’t try to break it down, it is satisfyingly well handled.

The cast is great and they really own their characters. Fassbender and McAvoy are great replacements as Magneto and Professor Xavier, respectively. They provide great emotional performances as well give us some great character moments. Jennifer Lawrence has come a long way from her first performance as the blue shape shifting femme fetal, Mystique. She finally fits the role perfectly as she is sleek, sexy, and highly unpredictable. And as always, Hugh Jackman is just spot on as Wolverine.

Overall, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is a the quintessential summer blockbuster this year. It has everything from amazing action, thought provoking and emotionally satisfying story that delivers on all cylinders, and a great cast of talented actors. Also worth nothing is that there really isn't that much action in it. That's not to say that the lack of action makes it any less of a movie, but it's just something to note before going into watching this movie.

As a movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great X-Men movie. However, I did not like the continuity in this movie as opposed to other movies, which is why I gave it a 9 out of 10. Also, I felt that the Quicksilver scene was a bit unnecessary. Ultimately, even though there are not as many action scenes as I would have though, the story was amazing. I also love James McAvoy as Professor X. I think he does it pretty well. I'm excited for the new movie.

--If you liked this review, please read my other ones and mark this review as helpful--

As with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men Days of Future Past is a turning point for the franchise. Make it or break it, go big or go home. Fox is heavily investing in this film to launch a number of spin-offs and sequels. This film is certainly ambitious: it's trying to fix all the continuity errors off the previous films, trying to bring back fans, and trying to make a bigger box office than the previous movies. Does it suceed?

Online, some have commented that the rights to the X-Men should go back to Marvel. After X-Men 3: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, many have lost faith in the franchise and the box office hasn't really improved, unfortunately. However, this movie redeems everyone and everything involved.

The director, Bryan Singer, manages to balance pretty well two large super-powered casts of mutants from two different time periods. Most of the characters get their moments and their share of screen time. Sure, characters like Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Bishop, Colossus, Quicksilver, Blink, Sunspot, Storm, Warpath, Havok, Toad and Ink (those last two names and their characters are funny) don't get more than a few lines, have only a few minutes of screen time, and often have to share the spotlight. However, they each have a purpose, however minimal it may be. Quicksilver is a great, funny, and entertaining character. His one action sequence was awesome, and I can't wait to see him return in X-Men Apocalypse. (Looks like DC's Flash and Disney's MCU Quicksilver have some competition!)

Some of these--admittedly underused--characters have scenes that reportedly will be on the DVD version, others have signed multiple-picture deals or will appear in later movies. So this won't be the last we'll see of them.

Some say Wolverine is in the X-Men movies too much. But the thing is he is the most recognizable, familiar, well-known, and arguably liked mutant of all the X-Men. In this movie, he isn't really the protagonist. Sure, he's the one that goes back in time. But here he gives the reins to a younger Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique. In DOFP, Wolverine is more wiser, a mentor to his own mentor from the past. James McAvoy does a great job of making Professor X more relatable as a person. In the original trilogy, he was a bit unreachable. He was always the one with the answers and the steady hands. Here, he has lost almost everything and is at a low point in his life. That makes him a more relatable character. Magneto is as menacing and misguided as always, and Michael Fassbender does a great job. J.Law as Mystique--I honestly feel she needed a bit more emotion. No offense Jennifer Lawrence. (Maybe playing Katniss Everdeen too much has affected her? Mostly though she did fine.)

Bolivar Trask is a morally grey character. He isn't a cardboard cutout villain, he's doing what he believes is necessary. He's a nice antagonist, and Peter Dinklage proves that height and size don't really matter when playing a role. Acting does. The Sentinels--I have mixed feelings about them. I guess the design could've been better. They weren't horrible in my opinion, but they weren't really good either. They were OK.

The plot is a complex one. Not really confusing, just complex. It's a story of misunderstandings, hatred, and vengeance. But it's also one of forgiveness, team-work, and hope against seemingly insurmountable odds. It isn't your average superhero movie story.

In my honest opinion, this is as good a team-up as The Avengers, if not better. The entire cast is great. The story is compelling and engaging. The CGI and special effects were great, even better than those displayed in the initial trailers and TV spots. I hope this does financially well, because 20th Century Fox and the X-Men deserve a break! I cannot wait for X-Men Apocalypse!

If I would compare this film to inception, then I would rather watch inception, because inception provided a great balance between the action and dialogue. Don't get me wrong, the actors were fantastic. The story idea was great, and I understand that time traveling called for a lot of talking to keep the audience aware of what is going on. However, there was A LOT of potential for some great action to take place in between the talking, whereas the x-men failed to deliver. After watching it, I can't believe rottentomatoes has a 91% rating on it. I would rank Cap. Am. Winter soldier way better than this film, whereas amazing spidey 2 would be the only major superhero flick so far this year, to be worse than x-men. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marvel is really on top of their film game, with a great Captain America, a decent Spiderman, and now a truly excellent X-Men, all in the same few months. And if you think about it, they are veritably ruling the film world. Look at the ensemble of actors in this movie. Where other than a Robert Altman movie are you going to find a cast of people together like Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page - the list goes on and on. What's more remarkable is that this cast works deftly together in a film that could have been a sloppy disaster. Time-travel movies when done right are some of the most intriguing movies ever - but if done wrong, they are excruciating. Luckily, Days of Future Past gets it all right, and the only drawback is all the expository, supporting dialogue the audience must therefore endure along the way in order to understand it. The bad guys in this movie are truly bad. If the Sentinels show up, they are going to kill you, and this is established right away in one of the most exciting superhero/villain fight scenes in any comic book movie to date. Seeing Colossus become full metal at the same time Sunspot flames on at the same time Iceman (finally) goes and stays full Iceman - a very cool moment. Unfortunately even these powerhouses are no match for the Sentinels. The only option is for newly-introduced (but now regular X-Man) Blink to keep them moving around until Shadowcat (with a future developed time/spirit manipulation power) can send newly-introduced Bishop just far enough into the past to warn the team that the Sentinels are approaching - so they can not be there when the Sents arrive. This is layer one. Layer two then is this first group combining efforts with the other group (Storm, Wolverine, Prof. X, Magneto) to send someone way back in time to before the Sentinels were even created. This task falls to Wolverine and off he goes into the second layer (the 1970s, pre-Sentinels) in an effort to stop Mystique from.... wow. The more I write the more I realize how convoluted this plot is. It's like trying to explain to a non-viewer what's going on in Game of Thrones. Pretty soon you just throw your hands up and say, "You know what? Just watch it!" And so that's what I'll do. What works in this film is the excellent acting, the dark plot, the nearly-full roster of Superheroes, and the best scene in an X-Men movie since Nightcrawler's debut in X2 (hint: Quicksilver, and anyone dealing with a Quicksilver or Flash-type character in the future must now contend with this scene setting a certain bar for excellence). There are a few disappointments. Anna Paquin will show up as Rogue for a second at the end, and I understand her deleted scene(s) will make it onto a DVD/Bluray version. But for this primary showing, she's notably and confusingly completely absent. The action scenes in this movie range from the terrifying Sentinel attacks to the now-typical "huge Magneto scene" - this time with him moving an entire sports stadium, to a lot of smaller scenes spread throughout - and they all work. The special effects are fantastic and nothing feels gratuitous (except when they are going for 100% gratuitous, as in the Quicksilver scene). The story holds together and the dialogue, while mostly expository, is good. It's my personal favorite of the series so far (you might be surprised to know that The Last Stand was my favorite until now - typically the one everyone hates - but I'm a sucker for new heroes and villains showing up, and X3 brought a lot of new faces into the series - even if Juggernaut was a huge letdown - the Phoenix climax was epic). Days of Future Past ups the ante on everything and makes me hungry for the next installment. I think they're being smart with this series - phasing some actors out and others in - because this bodes well for this being a series with a real lifespan well beyond where we're at now. If you're new to the series, by all means don't start with this one. Start at the beginning. But if you're already an X-Fan, you're most likely going to love this movie. Expand

The Great: My favorite part of the film is the speed mutant. It was just so cool to watch him in action. But if he had stuck around for the rest of the film, it would be too easy.

Great ending as well - we get to see all the changes in the timeline, and showing Jean and Scott as a small tribute and connection to the original X-men trilogy was nice. But most importantly, the older timeline is still remembered by Logan; so the previous timeline we saw still holds some meaning.

The good: Great humor - especially with Wolverine. Great action. The young versions of the heroes were handled very well - like making Young Charles a drunk / druggie, so he has something to overcome if he wants to save the mutants. They did a good job with building the characters of the three key heroes - Mystique, Xavier, and Magneto. The chemistry between Fassbender and McAvoy was great just like in "X-men: First Class", and I liked how even though they reconcile, Magneto still decides to do things his own way and act as the villain.

The bad: very formulaic story with tons of exposition. Like Young Charles not wanting to help Logan and then agreeing after a 10 second shot of Raven's picture. Or the X-men in real time being attacked right when Logan is about to succeed in his mission. The plot was incredibly predictable and everything is done by the Hollywood formula. Also, some of the character decisions (primarily Magneto) were pretty stupid - if he had just talked to Mystique after they stopped the assassination, there would be no point for the escalation that followed.

Overall though a very solid entry in the superhero genre and the X-men series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all i like all superhero movies and this is not different but i have to say this one is almost actionless like the wolverine. Two hours of talking is not what we expect from a x-men movie, right ? Sentinels are boosted too much that the destroyer is a kitten compared to them, i remember sentinels as huge silly robots from the animated series which i was a big fan of when i was much younger not like these invincible m...f... Seeing x-men were no match for them and die in pathetic ways was really annoying. As always they didn't use storm as they should, she is a f... demigod and i hate to see her so fragile all the time. And of course we saw rogue for ten seconds, she is one of my favorites i don't get why can't we see her flying and kicking ass. I always want longer movies but can't get enough thrill even in a 2 hours of "action" , i hope producers will do more to fill entire movies in the future because this franchise doesn't seem to make progress anymore. Remember the Dark Knight films being praised as the best superhero movies? Well they weren't since theres nothing "super" about them. Good movies but not superhero movies. These recent Marvel movies are written really well AND they do the comics justice unlike Nolans trilogy.

This is a true superhero movie and one of the best, if not the best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is great but there are a lot of problems with it. The story, cast and characters are all solid and the action sequences are really cool to watch. It grabs your attention from the moment it starts and keeps pulling you in as the plot progresses while at the same time developing and adding layers to characters we already know and giving intriguing introductions to some new ones for the next film. It looks great, it's acted brilliantly and is well directed. So why am I only giving it a 6? Four reasons:
Too much throwing in random characters for no reason other than to say they were there (Why was Havok even in this film?)
No explanation as to how Wolverine got his adamantium claws back (The previous film was The Wolverine where he lost them and went back to bone claws but now somehow they're adamantium again.)
No explanation as to how Shadowcat can send people back in time (Seriously, how does she do that? Her power is walking through walls, when and how to did she obtain time travel powers?)
No explanation as to how future Xavier is even alive after being vaporized in The Last Stand (Look, Singer, if you wanna forget The Last Stand I understand that, we all do. But you can't acknowledge some parts as canon and ignore others. It's all or nothing.)
So yeah there are holes in this film. That said, it's still a good time and has definitely got me looking forward to Apocalypse. It is a really enjoyable super hero movie but just bear in mind there are some things you'll have to be forgiving about.

Maybe I lack understanding as I never got into comic books. I did however enjoy X-Men and especially X2, but since then the ride has gotten a little bumpy. X3 was OK as was Origins. I quite liked First Class, but The Wolverine and Days Of Future Past have gone a long way towards sinking this franchise. I'm thinking if you agree with what I've said so far, you're more than likely to agree with what's to come.

The story is dark, which doesn't necessarily make for a poor film, but even if you suspend your disbelief it's still a stretch to really get behind the plot. And when it's "resolved" all you've accepted in the X-Men universe is flipped on it's proverbial head. I was not satisfied with the end/resolution of this film, I did not find the story engaging, and I do not think it successfully added anything to the franchise. As a prequel, First Class did (for me, anyway) in that it explained the history to many of the relationships we've come to know and added new dimensions to them. Character development was successful and satisfying. Even though Origins took a hit at the time, I would argue that in spite of its many flaws, it also helped to explain some things and overall worked as a film.

Days Of Future Past did not. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, and some other notable figures are mere bystanders. Right from the beginning you're transported into the way unfamiliar, and for my money, the unfamiliar leads to the downright bizarre and far fetched - even for a movie of this genre. And when the conflict is resolved, everything you've come to know may as well have been a dream sequence. I don't want to give anything away here as far as major plot lines, but I really thought this movie stunk. I wish I hadn't seen it and by about half way in was starting to look at the clock. Never a good omen, right? And perhaps the hardest pill to swallow is where they may go from here with the next movie. It just doesn't bode well if you're like me and found this movie so disappointing as you would prefer to scratch it off the list and start over from where they left off before things went downhill. I found The Wolverine to be a horrendous film, but at least it was complete in and of itself and didn't set the stage and tone for the whole franchise from that point onward.

Sorry to write such a bummer of a review for this movie as I had high hopes after the good reviews started to roll in. But I'd be lying through my teeth if I said anything other than that this is perhaps the worst X-Men film of the bunch.

X-Men is the oldest franchise that Marvel currently have in their ever expanding film universe. However it has been surpassed by the Avengers, both in their stand alone films and the juggernaut that was Avengers Assemble. Then Matthew Vaughn's prequel, X-Men: First Class (2011) shot some much needed life back into the series and things started to look up. But could the franchise keep it up?

Now Bryan Singer, director of the first two mutant films, is back and has the mammoth task of combining both sets of actors and giving us a film more credible and entertaining than the dismal X-Men: Last Stand (2006).

Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around Magneto and Professor X (McKellen and Stewart) sending Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back in time to 1973 to see... Magneto and Professor X (Fassbender and McAvoy). Their mission is to change history and prevent the war that will wipe out mutant kind. And thus we go from old cast to new.

James McAvoy plays a broken Charles Xavier with raw anger and sadness, far removed from the all-knowing calm figure of Stewart. He is a joy to watch as he struggles with his power.

Fassbender is also a wonder, never overplaying a role that could have led to scenery chewing of the highest order. The chemistry between both actors is amazing, I just wish they had more time together.

Jennifer Lawrence has made the role of Mystique/Raven her own (Rebecca who??) She is sexy, sassy and focused but has not yet grown into her evil persona of the original films, which means we can truly love her (for now anyway).

And onto Jackman. You just have to look at the posters to see he is supposed to be the star of the film and there is no denying that he has been consistently good even as the films diminished in quality. While he does play an important role in the plot, he sometimes acts as merely a foil for the new cast but what a foil he is.

Special mention goes to Nicholas Hoult's Beast who has grown as a character even if his screen time isn't extensive.

I couldn't write a review without mentioning Quicksilver. I admit that when I first read about the character being included I was sceptical. I truly believed that Singer only did it to piss off Whedon and the folks at the new Avengers film. But Evan Peters is a blast as the super speedy mutant who, despite his limited screen time, makes every scene he's in his own. His performance is an obvious contrast to the serious portrayal that Aaron Taylor Johnson will probably give in Age of Ultron (if the mid-credit scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is anything to go by). Also, there is a cheeky little nod to his parentage; brought a smile to my face.

The film itself is well paced... action and emotion in equal balance. The 131 minute run time passes by without feeling like it is starting to lag.

The mixture of high quality digital and grainy 1970s film is used to great effect.

As with most Marvel films, stay until the end of the credits for a peak into what lies ahead for X-Men.

There are a few niggles I have (at the beginning of the film Wolverine's claws are back to being made from adamantium which pretty much negates anything that happened in The Wolverine) but for the most part Singer brings back the familiar and fans can feel safe in his capable hands.

There has always been a theme of genocide and persecution that has run through the X-Men series but it has always been quite subtle and only ever really spoken about when Magneto goes on one of his rants about humanity. Days of Future Past is very different and does not have time for subtlety, as soon as the movie kicks off you are shown an incredibly dystopian future where mutants and the humans who dared to help them are herded up and executed by the dozen and the X-Men themselves have been reduced to nothing more that freedom fighters with no real hope of survival. It’s very dark and some of the scenes look like something that wouldn’t be out of place in Terminator Franchise, it’s certainly not something you would expect from the X-Men.

With the fact that they are fighting a force that they have no hope of possibly defeating they decide that the only option is to send someone’s consciousness back in time to the 70′s to stop the Sentinel program from ever being created, the only one who would survive such a journey is Wolverine so that’s exactly what happens. The plot of DOFP is set just over 10 years after the events of First Class. The Vietnam war is in full effect but drawing to a close, Magneto is locked away in a bunker for a pretty serious crime, and Charles Xavier has become a recluse and hides away in his mansion with Hank McCoy. Xavier is now a broken man and it’s a real testament to James McAvoy’s acting that you feel his pain and even though you know that he needs to man up and get on with it you understand why he feels that he can’t.

The mutant roster is largely based around the mutants we already know from the previous movies in the series but there are some new ones thrown into the mix as well. Most of the new additions are from the future (present?) and the scenes of them fighting off the Sentinels are some of the best action scenes of the entire series in terms of scope as you get to see them all using their powers as a team to try and prolong their lives a little while longer, these scenes are badass, there is no other work to suitably describe them. The only new mutant that we are really introduced to in the past is Quicksilver (played by Evan Peters), he is single-handed responsible for one of the highlights of humour through the entire movie. His mutation is that he can move at super-speeds and normally, you would just see him running as a blur but there is one particular scene where you get to see everything at his pace and it is pure genius!

Thankfully the writers seem to have listened to the feedback of X-Men fans and they have looked at the issues that were lingering in the series and they have addressed almost every single one of them! This is something I was not expecting to see and it is something I am very grateful for indeed. The time-travelling aspect of the movie kind of renders most of what has happened in X-Men 1, 2, and 3 kind of obsolete and it is left somewhat unclear as to what has or hasn’t happened in the current time-line. This isn’t a bad thing at all and if anything it sets up a nice blank canvas for the next movie.

Verdict:

Days of Future Past is, hands down, the best movie in the X-Men series to date. Including both the cast of the original movies and First Class was of course risky because it means there is a lot of different people to keep track of, both familiar and new. This decision is definitely one that has paid off as you are left with a movie that has a story to tell and tell it well is does!! Also seeing both the old and new Xavier face-to-face is definitely something special.

P.S. Make sure you stay until the very end of the credits!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (2011, 7/10) transposes the mutants’ universe into 1960s and allows some new blood to play their younger selves, X-MEN series has officially opened a new chapter. Three years later, the original helmer (X-MEN 2000, 7/10 and X2 2003, 7/10) Bryan Singer returns to the director chair to push a reset button to nullify all the damages done by Brett Ratner’s X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006, 7/10). In this latest episode, the story devises a time-travel mission to the past in order to save the entire world from the Sentinel apocalypse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most of the cast from First class returns 10 years later...This is the best part of the movie...

The problems begin by adding Professor X in the future when in xmen 3 he dies. Yeah I know he shows up in another body in the after credits, but that body is not the same. He should have just showed up at the end with everyone else. My next problem is shoehorning wolverine into this movie. It was annoying in Xmen first class and its even more annoying making him the protagonist in this movie. But I understand he had to be there to erase the mistakes of those 5 movies which were Xmen1-3 and the 2 wolverine movies. I loved this idea. But this would have worked better if there was no wolverine.

In the comic kitty pride was the one who went back in time. But it would not have worked in this film because she was not born yet. This would have been a great way to introduce quicksilver using his speed to go back in time...Wait...Where have I seen that before? Anyway why not introduce a new mutant that can time travel or send bishop back like she was doing to at the beginning of the movie.

Now comes the part with quicksilver. Why don't we see Emma frost or Scarlet witch and since its 10 years later why doesn't quicksilver look like a 9 year old?

The other thing they forgot to mention is Nightcrawlers birth and Azazel being the father. Then there's the beast transformation that never was explained. Lastly Magneto using train rails to control the Sentinels in which they still disobey him.

I wish they address some of these matters in the next movie. So for now its a good sequel to First class.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is just awful. I do not know why these directors keep making Wolverine the protagonist. I am sick of him already. The directors have so many other X-Men but Wolverine is the most popular and he is a cash cow. I guess it kind of makes sense with the plot in this one but still. He is bland and he hardly even fights. Mystique is alright in the film. She is basically there so Wolverine has something to do but it gets the job done. Magneto is complicated because you cannot tell what he is going to do. In one scene he is about to kill Mystique before she tries to kill the creator of the Sentinels but then later he tries to send a message to the world by trying to kill the very same person she was trying to kill. The best part of the movie is Quicksilver but he gets used for one or two scenes then the movie just drops him like his powers cannot help them in some other way, for instance, I don't know, finding Mystique! Also, Quicksilver mentions that his mom went out with a man who could control metal but then the subject never gets brought up again. I mean, come on! Why bring it up if you're not going to use it? Basically, mutants are being hunted, Wolverine is the only one who can save the day by going back in time and rounding up Charles and Magneto to team up but of course it is not going to be easy, even though Wolverine says that future is doomed if they don't work together. Magneto tries to do it his way because of angst and Charles is still upset that he took his girlfriend away. Big deal. There is also way too much talking and not enough action. Don't let the beginning of the movie fool you. There isn't going to be more action until near the end. I know that they are trying to set up the plot and go into some detail but jeez. I thought that Wolverine was going to do his taxes at some point. But I will say that Wolverine can hold his breath under water a really long time. And his body sure is tough enough to break metal right off even though it is pierced around his whole body...and well you get the idea. Maybe it is because it's a dream to him that it doesn't really affect him. Maybe... Also, I do not like how, at the end, Bryan Singer (The Director) basically says **** you to the first three X-Men movies and brought everyone back to life setting the movie up perfectly for a sequel. I guess Magneto isn't the main antagonist anymore? Or the fact that the future never happening maybe means that Magneto and Charles never get along. I don't know. That's up to the director of the next movie to decide. Wait, can't Charles just mind warp those future images into Magneto so that he remembers they are friends now? Oh well. Find out next week for the not so thrilling (not) conclusion! Expand

Damn. This was disappointing. Lets just start off by saying this is a good movie, but not the fantastic film that I was led to believe by all the positive reviews. There are things that I loved, things that I hated, and things I foundDamn. This was disappointing. Lets just start off by saying this is a good movie, but not the fantastic film that I was led to believe by all the positive reviews. There are things that I loved, things that I hated, and things I found mind-boggling.

Things that I loved: 1) The introduction and huge importance of the Sentinels. It's about time one of the films introduce the Sentinels, which play a big role in the overall story of the X-Men. I also like the depiction of these mutant hunters. It did a great job presenting a huge threat to X-Men and all mutants in the universe. 2) The concept of time travel. I like the idea of time travel in movies, and it always interests me how each story takes the idea in a different direction. In this version, it's your consciousness that inhabits your original body in the past, and not your whole being. Great idea! 3) Quicksilver. This guy's ability and attitude fit the film perfectly! Professor X and Magneto have such a serious demeanor, and he brought some good comic relief. He also had the best sequence in the whole film. 4) The action sequences were very well done and entertaining... but this leads into...

Things that I hated: 5) There are way too many action sequences. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. You have to balance out the action with the character stories, other wise you as a viewer end up not caring about what's happening. 6) Mystique's character. Wow! I usually think Jennifer Lawrence does an amazing acting job, but her character was written so one dimensionally... No one could have played this character and made her interesting. She might have said the same speech 3 times in the film. Yawn. 7) Magneto's character. I LOVED Michael Fassbender's Magneto in First Class, because he had great depth. It's the complete opposite in this film. I have no idea what his motivations are in this film. They spent so much time on Professor X's character, that we got very little out of Magneto beyond him just doing bad things. 8) *SPOILER* Everything that happened in the original trilogy has become pointless!!! Remember all the pain and suffering us fans went through when each X-Men made huge sacrificed for the greater good of humanity? Well I guess non of it matters anymore, because as a result of the ending everything has been null and voided. Why Hollywood, Why?! *END SPOILER* 9) The 3D is ugly. Ok, this is not a knock on the film per se, but there were so many sequences where the background looked completely fake. Honestly, I couldn't tell you if it was the film's bad use of green screen, or the terrible use of 3D to create depth in the background. It was a big distraction for me.

Things I found mind boggling: 10) Professor X's magical medicine. Why does taking a drug that reduces your mutant ability also negate your inability to walk after having a bullet hit your spine and paralyze you? What purpose did having Professor X walking around in this film serve other than the convenience of placing him in the same scenarios as the other characters. Thinking back... was there any scene in this film they couldn't shoot with him in a wheel chair? He does end up in a wheel chair anyways. He was taking the drug in the beginning the get the voices out of his head... he never said walking was important to him. Whatever... 11) Magneto's ability extends past metal bending. I'm not an engineer, and I'm assuming that Magneto isn't either, yet Magneto is able to weave metal through the interiors of the first models of the Sentinels to control them. Huh?! How does Magneto magically know the circuitry within the Sentinels without dismantling them first? This felt really dumb to me... but I guess it gave the audience a good chance to see how Magneto can make metal do whatever he wants. 12) The future. Terminator 2 anyone? I'm sorry, but this future was very unbelievable to me. The human vs. mutant war desolated the whole Earth?! I didn't see a war... I just saw innocent mutant being hunted down like dogs by the Sentinels. Where was the backlash from the mutant population that destroyed the planet? I didn't see that... so we have to assume that humans killing off the mutant population with this Sentinels caused their planet to become unlivable. Well that's dumb, because the humans just screwed themselves, because they have to live on the planet too. Also, where are these Sentinels coming from? Must be from some sort of factory, because the humans (which we never see), are pumping these things out by the hundreds. There has to be a place that's not destroyed, where the humans are living in a better place than what we're able to see. It would be nice to have a face behind all of this... the Sentinels are not controlling and producing themselves... right?

Don't get me wrong... I did say quite a few negative things about the film, but this is still a good movie to watch. Just make sure to turn off your brain.…

Nice to see Bryan Singer back at the X-Men helm. He's clearly been missed since his departure.

Days of future past does a fantastic job melding all the movies together and bringing the X-universe back on track. Singer's direction is noticeable as everyone and everything in every scene does it's part well.

However, as a bit of a fanboy of the comics, I am a little disappointed that some of the trailered characters (Warparth, Blink, Sunspot, etc.) played really small roles. Still, for the short time they spend on screen, they still check really awesome and are done justice (unlike the over saturated mess that was Last Stand.)

I was a little curious to the casting of Peter Dinklage. He plays the role extremely well, but feels a bit out of place. Fair play on the writers not putting in any short jokes (as there was a ton of opportunity to do so.)

Hats off to James McAvoy, a stunning portrayal of Xavier, again. Michael Fassbender is Magneto, to the point that he seriously outshines Sir Ian McKellen (who is now obviously far too old to continue to play Magneto.)

If I had to have gripe, it is that effects didn't really blow me away (while I hated Last Stand, it did have some spectacular scenes,) but that's not a bad thing since it did a far better job and telling a rich coherent story.

Overall:
While the effects may be toned down a little (from my point of view) X-Men Days of Future Past managed to tell a great story and represented its franchise fantastically! Bryan Singer: Welcome back!

Also what a great post credit scene! Can't wait for the next movie.

Side Note:
If anyone from the production team for the next move reads this: Please, please, please put Psylocke into the next movie. Properly, not that abomination from Last Stand.

Literally the best one released so far. Honestly, this is probably the best that super-hero movies are ever going to get to. The last superhero movie that I saw that I thought was this good was Spiderman 2 with Tobey Maguire (and can't forget that Willem Dafoe cameo) and X-Men blows that movie out of the water. I've seen it four times already, and I'm ready for a fifth. Seriously, no movie has had me this engaged. Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professer X had the greatest bromance since Brokeback Mountain, and it had me sobbing in the theatre, along with those next to me. You can't remember a greater post-credits clip than the one schwarma scene in the Avengers, and this movie annihilates that one. You gotta wait till the end of the credits. Best Xmen movie since Xmen 2. I feel like this movie has given the franchise a well need jump start. Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence are great, but the Quicksilver scene steals the show

Initially, I did not have high expectations for, yet another sequel. I thought, how could they possibly improve on the prior films? Well, they did it... The story, plot and special effects are exceptional. This movie not only plays on the various attributes of the favorite X-men characters, but adds a few new wrinkles to the saga, as well as, provides sub-textual life lessons. This is a must see movie and I highly recommend the 3D version. I reserve the rating of 10 for those few "epic" films, therefore; I rate this particular movie a 9 and save the rating of 10 for the entire series. Go see this movie... Expand

Finally the X-men franchise is living up to its potential. The plot is complex. Characters have agendas and motives that overlap or conflict at times and are authentic. It is an ensemble film where key characters are dynamic. At last what X-men should be.

The good.
The plot within itself makes sense. Its really easy to mess that up in things involving time travel.
The action sequences are pretty amazing. No one character is too powerful in comparison to others. The scenes set in the future manages to show a bleak abysmal world, but still evoke warmth between the onscreen characters. Including new characters you've never met who fit in seamlessly. And it adds to the rushed desperate feel of it. Scenes in the past manage to convey the feeling of the period aside just from a bunch of funky clothes. Characters are shown as fragile as well as being powerful.
The bad.
One apparent plot hole Charles Xavier is alive in this bleak future, yet when Wolverine is flashing back the rest of the dark phoenix ark from X3 clearly happened. One of the great things about this film is they get a chance to re-do that mess. I feel like they should have gone one way or the other on that. Or come up with a workaround. Things don't have to have happened exactly as we saw in X-3. In this future they obviously didn't. Maybe a deleted scene will explain it.
Similarly as warm and re-assuring as it is to see the original X1 cast at the end of the film, it would have been a golden opportunity to re-cast a character or two as I hope they do going forward.
Also, and I found this rather weird, Jennifer Lawrence emotes more and has more texture when she is Mystique. When you see her without all the blue makeup her face looks a tad airbrushed and she is not very expressive. I really do not know how they managed that one.
Also anyone who is expecting anything more than a bit part from Storm. Sorry. Not in this movie.
The verdict. At last we have moved past the period where creating a superhero movie meant cramming it up the wazoo with special effects. They should try to tell the best story they can, and add effects to heighten the experience. That is what this film does.
It also gets a bonus point for giving them the ability to reboot the franchise to a higher expectation going forward.

Of course, this is a broadly appealing X-men movie through and through -- don't expect any deviations from the usual feel and relatively generic script. It's a fun superhero flick but it's no Nolan's Batman.

If you've never seen any X-men movies, this probably isn't a great entry point to the franchise.

But now, in 2014, director of Superman Returns- Bryan Singer comes with another level of high class, well acted Xmen, with good results. The first think I want to say is that Days of Future Last isn't your typical action fulled, popcorn movie. If you like the comics or are familier with the characters and storylines, it's good to go for you. Some movies are so gripping and they stay so true to their comics and origins- DOFP is that type of movie. The Xmen send Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman in the past to stop the war that came in the future. Hugh Jackman was really good in this movie. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were the highlights. Jennifer Lawrence and Halle Berry were there but they were normal fare. This is the most absorbing and greatest Xmen movie ever know in recent years, it deserves the hype, and sure as damn deserves this much pride. This is what Tarantino did to Pulp Fiction, what Nolan did to The Dark Knight, what Kubrick did to Clockwork Orange. This is real cinema. I think I have never watched a movie so exciting and refreshing. You walk out of the theatre felling a sense of joy or spotting those Easter eggs with your friends and family. That is why movies are made. And DOFP is just that and even more. Why wait? Devour this excellent piece of filmmaking. Expand

The performances were excellent from everyone ,yes some do get more screentime than others, but they are also so well developed and heartful, that it's hard not to feel attached to these characters, wolverine is again great ,Hugh Jackman really nails his role ,i can't think of anyone else that will do it better than him,James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender deliver their best performances as proffesor x and magneto,Jennifer Lawrence as mystique was incredible,Evan Peters who plays quicksilver is absolutely awesome, even though he's got few scenes in the movie he completely steals the show in them. It's a great ensemble that goes from small characters to big ones ,but it constantly manages to make them more and more apealing and relevant to the story. The story itself is really good,if not a little bit complex and illogical which is unfortunately it's only weakness, see the story is handled extremely well ,the general feel ,the mood ,the atmosphere, the characters,time-travel element is handled mostly well, and i say mostly only because the events that happen here don't really make sense to the other films ,without spoiling anything expect to be asking questions left and right and getting really twisted about how certain things work out and how they fit into the general story of x-men.

What Bryan Singer doesn't completely nail in his story department ,he does in action ,needless to say it's intense, suspensful ,badass, spectacular and even horrifying at times. The stand out scene for me was quicksilver set piece ,remember matrix's introduction to the groundbreaking slo-mo bullet time ,well this movie takes that onto a WHOOOOLLLE new level, involbing quicksilver running at a killer speed in slow motion dodging bullets ,hitting guards, climbing on walls,in a beatifully ,visually and choreographically stunning set piece that will blow your mind, accompanied by some great music by Jim Croce, the rest of the action is just as good if not a bit repetitive,if this movie would solely be judged by the action i'd say it delivers and then some.

The movie is a wild ,emotional ride ,that is done with a huge respect to the franchise, further develops characters and gives our eyes a true eye-candy,it's one of the best films of this year,it's definetely worth watching and even if it does confuse a little with it's time-travel structure,it still remains my second favorite x-men movie to date, right after first class.

It's not quite the story you remember from the comic books in the 80's, but the basic plot is there. Bolivar Trask has created a series of military robots known as the Sentinels, whose sole purpose is to hunt down and kill the mutant threat. Unfortunately, the Sentinels figure out that the threat is larger than that, and end up destroying all of human civilization. Wolverine must go back in time to stop the event that leads to the initial government funding of the Sentinels program.

And of course, we are introduced to more mutants. Bishop is able to absorb energy from his fellow mutants and blast his foes with it. Blink, aside from being cute as hell, has an amazing portal ability that will leave you wanting to see more. Quicksilver simply steals the show with his incredible speed.

Jennifer Lawrence is given a greatly increased role this time around, no doubt because of the success of her career in other films. And Michael Fassbender continues to grow into the role of the complicated Magneto.

It's worth noting that X3 did a lot of damage to the franchise. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending of this film, but it does attempt to right the sins of the past.

Very entertaining with some great (and not so great) effects; but with some very sincere moments of character development, specially with Prof. X. All the acting was top-notch as you would expect. However, there were some (major) characters who hardly got a word in at all. One major character was just seen in the hallway at the end and another (future-version) major character wasn't seen at all (If Magneto got his power back after X-Men: Last Stand, didn't she?). Characters we did get to see and actually have some lines, were great. New characters (for the movie series) were awesome: Quicksilver!

As with all time-traveling-based stories, it's always a challenge to pull it off "realistically". X-Men: DOFP did so splendidly and with heart. Nice story, indeed. Again, some very deep moments. The effects were top-notch in most of the scenes... but a few, well, had less time spent on them (ie: the fall out of the window).

Very enjoyable, smart superhero movie for summer. Go see it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Day of Future Past is a fantastic superhero movie in every way, shape and form... except for the gaping flaw that is its premise. Don't get me wrong, I understand that one must suspend their level of disbelief greatly in order to enjoy these films. Newsflash, I love superhero movies so clearly the suspension of disbelief isn't the issue. There is a difference between being willing to accept something as possible and there being a monumental plot hole, which was the case with this film.

***SPOILERS***
The movie is set WAY into the future where these "robots" called Sentinels have effectively wiped out all mutants in existence and a large portion of the human population as well. Because these Sentinels are too much for the X-Men, they conceive of a plan to send Professor X's consciousness back in time to his younger self, when the Sentinels program was in its infancy in the 1970's, so he can stop Mystique from killing the creator of the program and then being captured and experimented on, which is what results in the Sentinels being the unstoppable force they become. Because sending someone's consciousness back decades would physically tear them apart, the only man for the job is none other than Wolverine.

And that's the premise of the film. Did nobody else scream "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!" when reading that? Allow me to clarify once again. I am willing to accept that there are invincible robots, that mutants exist, and that you can send someone's consciousness back in time decades for an extended period of time. I have no problem with any of those concepts because I have suspended my disbelief completely. However, if you know who creates this horrible program and you can send someone back in time, wouldn't you just send Logan a little further back and kill the creator, effectively eliminating the threat of the Sentinels before they ever exist?

There are other plot holes throughout the film but I'd categorize those as relatively minor, akin to the ones you will typically find, not just in superhero movies but in films in general, so I won't go into detail on those. I'll simply say that a 9 or 10 caliber superhero movie with incredible acting, especially from James McAvoy, great special effects, and awesome action scenes easily drops to a 6 or 7 caliber movie because every single dramatic element was clouded with an "If they did this obvious thing, none of this crap would've happened". (6 + 7)/2 = 6.5, which rounds to 7. That's about the best explanation possible for my reasoning.
