I completely agree, Wonder Woman was much better than anything else DC has released in a very long time, and it was a pretty great film, but was it as amazing as everyone say it was or are we all a bit bias due to the hype surrounding the film? In the first blockbuster superhero film featuring Wonder Woman since the 1970's, we see Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) sitting in her office, remembering how it all started, and we are thrown back to the Island of the Amazons, where she is a little girl. We see her grow up and go through her training, with her aunt played admirably by the Princess Bride herself, Robin Wright, making an epic comeback. After which, a series of events lead her to meet a man and leave the island to join the war effort in England. Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman and she was truly something special, I mean to take nothing away from her or her performance with this next statement, but I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't point this out. While everyone got caught up in the hype of the fact that DC made a good movie, that didn't center around Batman, and the fact that this film was centered on a female superhero, they failed to see just how unoriginal the story actually was. As I was watching the scenes on this Island, with Diana growing up, not knowing what she really was, and leaving before she was ready, I was very much reminded of Thor, but that was just the first hour of the film. I thought things would get better but they didn't. She becomes this unexpected larger than life hero in World War I, much in the way that Captain America did in World War II. Both of them fought really bad guys who weren't the "main" bad guy behind the war, and then there is the whole God angle, which brings us right back to Thor again. The film was so well done, I think it is more than time we had a strong female hero that young girl can emulate and look up to, and I thought Gal Gadot was a breath of fresh air, who gave an outstanding performance. As far as originality goes, to me it just wasn't there, as it seems the writers took elements from two of the more popular Marvel films and mashed them together. The Bottom Line, Wonder Woman is absolutely worth seeing, however I'm all for original ideas, and I want to see something different, especially at a time when a new superhero film is coming out every month. There are many great things that happened with this movie, all explained by others at length, so I won't go over them again, I'll just focus on some negatives since there are fewer of those:

Gal Gadot's acting could have been better in several ways. Her dramatic scenes have her looking like a teenager _pretending_ to be dramatic like an adult. Most of her fight scenes look like she's going through some motions recently explained to her by a trainer, too concentrated on making the right moves and not paying any attention to her facial expressions: she doesn't look like someone righteously furious in striking enemies down, just someone going through their gym routine or something. By contrast, I was far far more impressed with Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen, whom I wish I could see more of in their amazon roles in the future.

The story feels rushed at times, I think this might've worked better as a 3-hour feature.

The choice of David Thewlis as (a moustached?!) Ares was jarring to say the least, but this may be apparent only to those also currently following S3 of Fargo, where he's playing a positively disgusting character, nothing to do with the awesomeness of a god (though he had every bit of help that could be expected from the script and direction).

Overall still a satisfying experience, well worth the ticket price, but with some minuses I just had to mention, particularly regarding Gal's acting, as everyone who liked the movie seems to be praising her uncritically left and right.

However it loses all credibility as it becomes clear that in the wake of "bad" DC films like suicide squad and BVS that executives forced this to effectively dance around in the skin of Disney super hero films. Brings the same ridiculousness, rejection of any sort of depth and selling out its own brand originality alienating a large portion of its own gen X fanbase with abundant Anti-grimdark so as to pander to millenials.

Only bright spot was Gadot's performance was better than expected despite that she creates a visual disconnect that makes her "off" as Diana of Themyscira as she has neither the right physique nor facial structure for Wonder Woman. Close, but uncanny valley level of "off". Not quite expressive or emotive enough in scenes where it is appropriate. Honestly it is hard to determine if the problem is her performance is just not quite up to it, Or if it is that she is hamstrung by hokey, cliched writing and/or pandering direction.

Had WB execs not been clearly pulling puppet strings trying to make this into a Disney/marvel production, and clearly doing extensive greasing critic palms to ensure glowing pre release reviews trying to trick the public into an inaccurate perception, then the film would have been a 4 or a 5. However all that is really here is a mediocre film trying to pander to so many demographics such as millenials and feminists that it does not grasp exactly who it is offending and just hopes to snag those demos support to carry into being received far better than it actually is.

When you whittle away the marketing all you are left with is downright boring. Which is the greatest sin any film can ever make because it is defeating its only purpose. Anyone telling you that this film is anything otherwise is lying to either you or themselves and doing so out of being oblivious to social engineering. It is what it is.

0/10 for making a Disney superhero flick with DC properties and trying to pay their way out of anyone noticing before release. Otherwise 4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The worst fantasy movie of the 21st century, absolutely, no doubt. Really bad has got the worst, a movie barely could have been so bad as this. I kept asking myself until the last 10 minutes of movie "When will the movie start?". My father and I were standing in the movie theater very hard. My dad has tried to go outside many times, but I've stopped him. But after Ares' death, we've instantly get up and left the theater. DC's really dipped. They've made the definition of disgrace word by creating this movie. Furthermore, Wonder Woman is the most disgusting character/super hero I've ever seen. An ignorant, self-conceited, mindless, non-intelligent, virtueless character. Her armrest bracelets are the strongest thing in an entire universe. Any attack of the enemy has always come to the wristband, this is craziness. So in short I am very sorry to have watched this movie. Always the same things; humanity, goodness. It's over. I think Ares was right. Visuality:0, Sounds:0, Characters:0, Scenario:1. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wonder Woman is a breath of fresh air into the DCEU, and has given the franchise hope for success. It is not the best super-hero film, or even my favorite super-hero film to come out this year, but it doesn't have to be the best to deliver a compelling character to the silver screen for the first time. This film contrasts the dark, brooding tone of previous DC films, and is instead filled with color, a courageous and morally grounded character, and even some jokes. The action scenes are, for the most part, pretty fun (I will elaborate when I get to the negatives of the film). Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman have several conversations about humanity, and one in particular, where Steve explains that humanity is not naturally good, is the best part of the movie in my opinion.

However, this movie is by no means perfect. First, I will address the supporting characters. Wonder Woman brings a band of misfits along with her to hunt down Ares, but it seems as if they are completely pointless and serve no purpose in the film. Yes, they do show her different sides to humanity. One is a thief, one is a sharp shooter struggling with PTSD, and the other is a native American (honestly I cannot remember why they brought him along). These characters are used to show Diana that even the "good guys" have dark sides, and have done bad things, but honestly they could have been random soldiers who tagged along instead caricatures.

My biggest gripe with the movie is its ending. While the rest of the movie may have been flavored with a healthy amount of cheese, the end went overboard with the cheese. Firstly, the villain is revealed to be the British counselor character (played by David Thewlis) who has been trying to help Diana and company throughout the movie. Not only does he not look or feel menacing at all, he starts spouting cliche and cheesy villain dialogue. The end fight, instead of being a personal fight like it had been built up to be, turned into a bunch of explosions. Imagine the end of BvS but without Wonder Woman or a villain who can believably best her in combat. There is one point in the fight when lightning blasts out of Ares' hands and he shouts something along the lines of "if you will not join me, I will destroy you!" He was only one cheesy line away from being Emperor Palpatine from Revenge of the Sith at this point. Somehow, after the sacrifice of Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman goes from being easily overpowered by Ares, to possessing the power to instantly obliterate him. It was a cheap payoff for the fight. After Ares' defeat, the sun begins to rise, and all the Germans stop fighting and hug each other. This entire end sequence felt disconnected from the rest of the film, like it had been directed by a different director.

All in all, Wonder Woman is good. Better than almost anything else DC has released, but the end of the movie is what ALMOST ruins it for me. I would recommend this movie. It's still fun with a likable protagonist, but I do not understand all the hype it's getting. If you go into this movie with high expectations, you may be slightly disappointed, but still have a fun time. If you go in without any preconceptions of the film, you will really enjoy it.

If you replace the women with men in this film it would be horrible. I get that we all have desired that strong female super hero and she absolutely is amazing at portraying Wonder Woman. But I was actually not impressed with the plot of this movie. The first 15 minutes were boring and cheesy and the final battle had no real sense of urgency or tactical victory. What made this movie enjoyable was seeing a strong woman in a mans world. And the innocence of how it was done. Again overall good film, I'm excited to see more of her. But don't really expect more than Transformers with beautiful women.

Less bleak and way more fun and entertaining than Batman vs Superman. Gal Gadot is phenomenal throughout and has great chemistry with Chris Pine. Pine is also probably at his best with a sharp wit and charm.
The villains do feel like they could also work in a Captain America movie. Danny Huston and Elena Anaya give chilling performances nevertheless.
The big battle in the end between good and evil is just a little goofy. Gadot owns every scene though, even that one. Her lasso of truth would come off worse on the big screen. If everything she didn't either come off bad ass or humorous even. She could probably even pull off the invisible jet.
While Hans Zimmer may not do the score. His kick ass Wonder Woman theme from Batman vs Superman returns. Which was probably the best thing to come from that movie. That score goes with the character extremely well.
After the movie my niece said "that might be even better than any Marvel film!" As a fan of Marvel as well, I have to agree. Wonder Woman was amazing.

I have to admit action scenes were good but at the same time find the way amazons fight over the top and probably not good for battle, the way germans invaded the beach was plain stupid.
There were also others physics related problems everytime Diana used her super strenght that kept me out of the movie.

But the worst problem of the movie, at least in my opinion, is the fact that Chris Pine's character was more a hero than Wonder Woman.

Extra points because it wasn't as bad as Suicide Squad.

It's an wonderful movie not only for its glamour but also for how it embeds deep moral understanding into a touching presentation. However, on some level, it does leave you wanting for more - I guess that's understandable for an superhero origin movie.

The film is not bad, however, in view of what we from great hero's films are simply lived too weakly. Visually the film has well succeeded. The native country of the amazons looks good and the costumes as well as the fight choreography is convincing. If the film changes in the world of the people in the First World War it goes downhill. Wonder Woman irritates with her cheeky flap and shows off better as what. From adaptation no track. And also this time the bad Germans with her mustard gas must hold out again. Must this be again? A film in many scenes is irritating and offers less like the previous great hero's films. Expand

Well DC, that's much better.

I'm actually quite surprised by this, but glad at the same time. DC didn't have such a great start with it's previous installments and while I'm still anxious about the next upcoming films, I can safely say that "Wonder Woman" is the first decent film in the DC Universe.

The two stand outs of the film are Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Both the chemistry and the performances were all solid. You love seeing them together and hate to see something bad come between them, which always ends tragically. I wasn't a huge fan of Gal Gadot performance and character in "Batman V Superman", as it didn't fit in the already crowed movie and isn't in the best hands. Here it's better in terms of direction.

"Wonder Woman" is a massive improvement and am very happy DC listened. The action scenes were exciting and well made. It's colorful and has a great message for empowerment for both women & men. Without the painfully obvious re-shoots and no Kanye West songs or Queen Bohemian Rhapsody thrown in for "improvements". The movie is at least watchable and enjoyable. And get this, it's got a sense of humor, even when some of it didn't hit the mark.

While I liked the movie overall, however I didn't quite love it like everyone else. My issues are with the first act being sluggish and filled with cliche digoule. Soon as Chris Pine shows up is when it picked up for me, as you get some great scenes between Steve and Diana.

The film had a great message about war and how everyone is a mix of good and bad; which sadly gets ruined in the third act and turns into "Man of Steel" climax all over again. Pretty disappointing. And I didn't like Wonder Woman theme (which is rock music) playing while the story is set in WW1. It just felt odd and out of place hearing rock music during that type of era, but that's my opinion.

I don't know who does the visual effects for the DC movies, because it doesn't look that good and very unfinished. I mean, some of it looked decent when it's not against real life environment, although that can't be said for the rest.

The movie also suffers from the same problem with Marvel and that's the villains. Talk about cartoonist at it's worse and just stereotypical. Just be glad it isn't as bad as enchantress.

Overall rating: Wow, it may look like I named off more problems than positives. Keep in mind I really did like the movie, these are just things that bugged me and could have done better. The rest I thought was good and I'm interested in where things are going in the future for these movies.

Bravo Patty Jenkins

It starts slightly awkwardly but the second act is wonderful. Unfortunately the third act is disappointing. But special mention to Gal Gadot who is an absolute knockout as Wonder Woman. Utterly charming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Much better than S vs B. What impressed me the most was that Gal Gadot did most of her own stunts instead of using a stunt double. She really had on-screen charisma, and was a humorous, yet headstrong and heroic character. Loved the soundtrack too, and the jokes cracked throughout the movie which really lightened the mood of the movie.

Also contained a very unexpected plot twist, totally did not expect that (I never read the cast list prior to watching so I had no idea who was playing Ares)

Some of the dialog that Chris Pine (playing Chris Pine) is dross. Does he have it in his contract that he has to ride a motorbike in all his films? The 3 sidekicks are pointless in the way that they don't effect the plot in any way. Given 3 stars as GG is really quite beautiful and I love her bond like theme music. Its a real shame that the JL is going to be rubbish too. These are great characters but DC just can't get it right, proved in point by the pitiful amount they paid a female lead for this movie. Expand

Wonder Woman is not just a good comic book movie; it is a great fish out of water origin story. Gal Godot seems to really be coming into her own in this film and was complimented by one of the best supporting casts I’ve seen for a DC film not named the Dark Knight. A few honorable mentions to the supporting cast, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Ewen Bremner, Said Taghmaoui and Elena Anaya were all fantastic. My only gripe with the film is that one of the villains in the film felt like they were miscast for the role. The film had heart, it was funny and the action scenes were great, exactly what the DC film universe needed to get its fans interested in upcoming movies. Expand

Related Media: The character (Diana / Wonder Woman) had a cameo in Batman Vs Superman (BVS) recently and before that, in numerous comic books, cartoons and live action TV shows. I know a bit of her backstory.
>
What’s it like? This is the origin story of Diana growing up on the hidden island of Themyscira, her training, and her entry into our world to help mankind. >
Pros:
>
1. For a character that has not been covered in detail in a feature-length film, this endeavour is fresh, interesting and has a couple of surprises.
>
2. The casting of Gal Gadot was perfect. She comes off as beautiful, genuine and caring, the characteristics you would expect of a wonder woman, regardless of whether you had known what Wonder Woman should be like. It's instant recognition, done very well.
>
3. Many of the action scenes were very well done and the use of slow-motion was executed well. When the same thing was tried on BVS, it looked fake.
>
Cons:
>
1. Some of the action scenes looked implausible. I know this is a fantasy film, but my view is that physical laws can be stretched but they should not be broken. That the film chose to break some of them unnecessarily made me feel that the film could have been done better.
>
2. The film slows down at some points and gets awkward at others. Some details that do not make sense have also been left unexplained or explained poorly. Examples of this include how she was able to speak over 100 languages. Furthermore, she should be keeping the existence of Themyscira secret, but there were several people openly talking about the island and no attempt was made to stop this.
>
3. There was one instance Diana sent an email to a certain famous person by simply typing the person's name in the To field. This would not work in reality! That name would need to have been underlined to indicate that her email software knows the real email address and has auto-inserted the email address there. >
4. Gal Gadot has an accent, and it seems that the director had made all the caucasian characters on Themyscira speak with the same accent, so as to explain Gal Gadot's accent as that of the people of Themyscira. It comes off as a little irritating.

WW didn't have as much personality as Reeve's character, but similar innocence and selfless bravery. A really beautiful movie. Without spoiling anything, there's a scene where WW draws the gunfire to herself and I'm not sure why, but I had tears streaming down my face! It was just so brave and selfless (there was probably a powerful score at that moment too). My one complaint was the ending. A little too much on a couple levels, but not enough to change my high opinion of the movie. Would seem wise for future DC movies to bring key decision makers from this film onboard to advise so as to hopefully avoid the trend of emotionally dead films DC has been making. Expand

She was able to be a badass and also be the naive fish out of water. Sure, the script took liberties with the Wonder Woman back story and was much more reliant on Greek mythology than either the comics or the 1970s Linda Carter TV show (with Debra Winger as little sister Drucilla). It also changed the present day from WW2 to WW1. The latter choice was probably due to the first Captain America being set in WW2. The "Great War" setting plays though. It was cool to see the staging of the WW photo seen in the truly bad Batman v. Superman. This is by far the best of the DC movies (I don't count the Dark Knight movies as DC movies). DC has been better at animated films. This is entertaining and fun and ultimately a great summer movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wonder Woman is dumbest movie that I have seen. Wonder Woman is so void of any coherent thought and logic, that it makes the notorious Battlefield Earth look like a science documentary by comparison. Staying true to the nature of Hollywood, Wonder Woman tries to hide it's weak script and wooden character development with special effects. Wonder Woman's saving grace, and why the film is not universally despised by it's critics, is only because of it's affirmation to Hollywood's fantasy of social egalitarianism, that is being forced into every dimension of our lives. What Wonder Woman is, is the egotistical Hollywood heads taking a **** on World War I history, and rewriting it into a fantasy that never was. In reality, General Erich Ludendorff was among the earliest to point out the betrayal of the Imperial German Army by Marxists and Bolsheviks, thus resulting in Germany's defeat. Perhaps this is the reason for the absolutely childish demonization of General Ludendorff in Wonder Woman? Walking out of the movie theater, I have come to understand that Wonder Woman is not only a movie, but a symbol. It is a symbol of how deeply the Hollywood establishment despises white christian civilization, and how they are so proud of it, that they no longer even try to conceal it. It is a symbol of their chutzpah. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is just plain awful. The personality of the main character makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They are trying to portray her as this innocent holy child who has no idea of the world "out there" and believes that every human is intrinsically good and has to be protected. But then for some reason just because some random British guy is telling her yeah the Germans are the bad guys she runs around killing them gleefully to save the British while still talking about how everyone needs to be saved and it's not their fault. Then there's the scene where the Generals say they won't attack Belgium because they want a peace treaty, and she gets enraged at them because they won't allow attacking somewhere although she really just wants everyone to have peace? What? Isn't the point of her peace keeping duty exactly to STOP this "but they have evil intentions so we HAVE to keep attacking them!" attitude?

It never felt like they actually thought a second about how to make this movie make any sense and just rushed out a lazy "cool superhero who just beats up bad guys" origin story, while at the same time trying to make her an innocent "nobody should be hurt if possible" character, which just doesn't go together like this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS DRAMATICALLY: Many other reviewers have already eloquently expressed the issues with this movie. Perhaps the problem was that the movie had too much responsibility resting on Gal Gadot's shoulders. The idea that finally, having a female superhero could somehow save the DC universe's Justice League curse.

Sadly, the same **** three act piece of **** script was played out here. It's overly long, overly sentimental, and just gushing with sentiments about love. A literal goddess falls in love with humanity - the playthings of her father.

There are nice moments in the first two acts, but the entire German WW1 plot is laughable - maybe so much so that it will eventually be funny. Much much too long, did not pass the 'need to pee' test. You can't have a drink in this overly long movie... the end fight scene alone will feel like a literal millennia and you will be as lonely and sad as Diana herself in your desperate need to pee and your firm belief it has to be over soon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was an incredible movie. It's a 10/10 for sure. I wanted a more muscular and stronger looking actress (like Gina Carano or Rhona Mitra) to play Wonder Woman, not a stick figure like Gadot, however she did an incredible job of acting that I forgot how weak and scrawny she looks in real life. The story line was decent and the action sequences were top notch. The emotional elements that make you tear up felt genuine, which makes or break a movie in my opinion. I am not a fan of Chris Pine but he did well here. I got a vibe of the Howling Commandos when they were all travelling together before the watch tower scene. The scene where Wonder Woman clears a trench of German soldiers was incredibly satisfying to watch. I know the word epic get thrown around willy nilly now-a-days, but this scene truly was epic. Unlike most people I loved Superman v. Batman, but this movie was leagues better in comparison. If you haven't seen this film yet, what is wrong with you? My favorite part was seeing Themyscira on the big screen. As a huge fan of Greek Mythology and shows like Xena; this movie was an incredible experience. Expand

Wonder Woman is a great superhero movie, and easily the best so far in the dreadful DC Extended Universe.

The movie introduces Diana, coming from a hidden island full of Amazon warriors. All this is inspired by Greek mythology, but is presented in a unique way (like the original DC comic book stories from decades ago).

After a World War I-era plane crashes in her island, Diana leaves and journeys to the outer world, finding out that WW I is raging, and is horrified when she learns of the effects war has on people. Along with a band of soldiers she enters the battlefield in order to bring an end to this war and save humanity.

Gal Gadot made a short but impressive debut as Wonder Woman in Batman vs Superman, and in her solo movie she shows that she's the right choice to portray the character. Chris Pine is also great as Steve Trevor. Wonder Woman has the same serious tone of the previous DCEU films, but also features some much needed humor and humanity, which helps ground the movie. The scenes where Diana has to adapt to the outside world are funny enough to not reduce the film into a parody.

Overall, Wonder Woman is great. I hope DC have learnt their lessons and their future films will be more like Wonder Woman and not like Batman vs Superman or Suicide Squad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A few comments:

- Most reviewers overlook the most obvious thing about the fight on the beach: there was nothing villainous about the Germans (who were just chasing a spy), so when the amazons ruthlessly attack them without provocation and slaughter them to the last man, it arguably sets a much darker tone than anything we've seen yet in the DCEU. Contra their self-rhetoric, the amazons seem to revel in warfare and killing and make sport of it (after all, their whole raison d'etre is to hunt down Ares and kill him); note that unlike Batman and Superman (who fight with grim determination when the situation demands it) Diana actually smirks cheerfully as she slices terrified German infantrymen to mincemeat, even though they're just anonymous people fighting for their country. This was a very shrewd, very dark take on "empowerment" as an excuse for celebrating morally gruesome behavior.

- Despite Gadot's indifferent performance (she apparently went to the same acting school as Daisy Ridley: "Open your eyes wider! Scrunch your brow up! Good, now pout! pout!"), the character of Diana likewise undermines well-worn superhero tropes. She is notable for her feminine passivity and receptivity; powerful she may be, but nothing she does is self-willed. She merely fulfills missions and directives handed down from Hippolyta and Steve, without knowing or caring about the larger picture (what middlebrow critics are calling "innocence" and "moxie" is really blithe naivete and ignorance). The one thing she does do impulsively is to leap up and gratuitously slaughter some Germans when the opportunity arises, but like I said, the amazons clearly love killing. Her lack of serious inner struggles or flaws to overcome throws her in sharp relief against the other superheroes on offer these days.

- Other tropes are undermined. There is almost no cliche more overworked these days than the Hollywood-diverse squad of sidekicks, but the striking thing here is that they're portrayed with wicked wit as mostly-useless caricatures: the grumbling Indian helps by providing SMOKE SIGNALS, the Muslim poses as a bumbling servant, and the Scotsman just babbles and gets in the way. The fact that the writers slip this by without being called out on these problematic blackface performances shows the true subtlety of imagination that went into the script.

- Similarly, Diana's mission ultimately fails. Yes, she kills Ares, but so what? It doesn't end the war, it doesn't prevent the next (far worse) war, it really doesn't do anything. This leads to the savagely cynical ending where Diana asserts that "only love can save the world" while retiring from heroine work to a life of obscurity (note how when she reappears in BvS no one has ever heard of her). Meanwhile Steve Trevor actually saves the day by destroying the poison gas (a threat Diana repeatedly made clear she didn't care about), making the ultimate heroic sacrifice to actually save lives and change the outcome of the war.

- In Man of Steel Clark overcame humanity's mistrust of his alien nature by proving his willingness to abandon loyalty to Krypton and fully assimilate to American society; the movie ends on a hopeful note that he'll be able to use his power to guide humanity toward a brighter future. Wonder Woman ends with Diana more alone and alienated than ever, withdrawing from the world having failed to save anyone or change anything. Again, this is the kind of brilliant subversion that Suicide Squad was supposed to have.

- Danny Huston looms hilariously over the movie as a caricature of a generic, scenery-chewing face of evil. I definitely think the filmmakes made some bold choices, but they are far from making "warfare itself" the villain as some have proposed; if anything they provide a postmodern critique of that approach by showing how trench warfare -- so horrifying to the men who fought it -- is basically a fun game (and chance to show off) to the indestructible Diana. Huston's deliberately underwhelming and absurd fight with Diana is a blackly comic take on the bloated 3rd act showdown these movies always feel obligated to provide (this is then FURTHER lampshaded by actually giving us a bloated 3rd act showdown, against a literal mustache-twirling Dark Apparition From Nowhere with less gravity than a Final Fantasy villain). - Lastly it was amusing how the Germans were so Nazified despite this being WW1. This itself comments on the absurdity of the whole concept of putting a superheroine (especially a cheesecake lingerie-model superheroine in a padded leather corset) in the middle of a horrific meat grinder historical event like WW1. The point is that the studio is saying "WW1, WW2, Nazis or not Nazis, what's the difference? You think the proles in Dayton (and Beijing) will care? They're Krauts! They deserve to die!". This is black humor at its finest, and makes a trenchant jab at the similar dehumanization of the Other seen in movies like Saving Private Ryan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Highly overrated but still pretty good - I'd give it a 6.75. It was a little too long with some dead parts or parts that could've been shortened up.....I'd say a good 10 - 15 minutes could have been trimmed with no ill effects.

Surprised that it wasn't the "men are all idiots and incapable" thing or that it didn't really bash men at all....a pleasant discovery. Of course (as seems the thing in just about every movie today) the "race thing" had to be brought up for no good reason.....the Indian/Arab/Persian dude who wanted to be an actor but has to serve "because of his color"...sigh....and the out of place American Indian dude lamenting and blaming "his kind' (read: white men) for robbing his heritage and land....double sigh. Stuff like that was very unneeded, preachy and out of place in a superhero movie. We know.....we know....

Gal Gadot is drop dead gorgeous though and her smile lights up the screen....also, her acting was not as bad as others have said and she pulled it off.

Wonder Woman is a bit overrated. Not to say that the movie is bad, far from it. It is indeed a massive improvement over the lackluster Batman vs Superman and the disaster that was Suicide Squad. However, there was just something missing inWonder Woman is a bit overrated. Not to say that the movie is bad, far from it. It is indeed a massive improvement over the lackluster Batman vs Superman and the disaster that was Suicide Squad. However, there was just something missing in Wonder Woman that left me feeling a little disappointed. Which is a shame, because this movie had a great foundation. Wonder Woman in World War I, trying to end the war to end all wars. And overall, I did like the characters, I like Diana's and Steve's relationship, I liked the perspective Diana had about the human world. How she had to learn and grow, as anyone would have to.
Unfortunately, after a very long two hours, the climax came, and everything the film did right was undone. In a final battle, filled with mediocre CGI, an overly silly villain, and lame action. It didn't help that Gal Gadot's lack of acting experience was massively exposed, especially when paired with seasoned actors like Robin Wright.
Believe me, the movie is good. DC is not dead yet. But the film is not the game changer that the reviews will say.
Still, I enjoyed it, and I think you will too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went to see the movie with all the 90%ish reviews and oh boy, was I disappointed.

Gal Gadot plays an ok Wonder Woman and she probably is one of the brighter spots of the movie.
The history is during WWI but it pretty much looks like WWII. The bad general could be substituted by a standard-cliche-WWII-Nazi-badguy and the evil female henchman is a WWI Dr.Mengele clone. Some of the outfits also are more WWII than WWI but those are details. The Germans are bad. The British are good.

Despite its flaws the movie could be a solid 6 if not for the final 20-30 mins when it all goes to poop. Once the evil general (who is believe to be Ares by Wonder Woman) is slain there were two choices the creators could do. 1) Diana realizes that good and evil have nothing to do with Ares. That people are just a mixed bag. Steve could then convince her that the good ones are still worth fighting for. You get some deeper morality involved.
2) Make a plot twist when it turns out Ares has a mustache and make 20-30 min of cliches with cheesy dialog along with MASSIVE BLOWING STUFF UP WITH BAD CGI and creating loop holes in the meantime.

Now we all know which one they chose.

The Good:
Gal Gadot
Chris Pine
The Amazon Island

This is meh combination of Thor with Captain America. I don`t have issues with the whole "feminist" feeling of the movie and I love the idea they made a solo female superhero movie but I think its a failed opportunity unfortunately

The music; along with great cinematography, slow motion, and stunt choreography make the action sequences a blast to watch. It has its moments of over the top comic book action, but it also is not afraid to settle down and focus on more intimate moments. The characterization and dialogue bring a level of humanity and maturity that the DC films have recently been lacking. It is a major improvement over the last few DC films. It surpassed my expectations even with all the acclaim prior to seeing it. The cinematography was incredibly crisp, just absolutely sublime and what I took most away from the film was that none of it was overblown. No ridiculous demands, no Deus Ex Machina garbage, having a very honest narrative can do wonders nowadays.

Gal Gadot was a superb cast as Wonder Woman. She delivered a character with a cute, dainty foreign sense of naivety infused with insane unbridled power. Of course she refined it as the film progressed but in concept it highlights how simplicity, when done right in a compelling manner with the honest narrative I touched on earlier, can unravel glorious qualities that far exceed its initial impression. It's unconventional and I love it. The rest of the cast also played their part extremely well, Chris Pine did an excellent job.

I knew this film was special when it brought me to the literal verge of tears. Goosebumps were running off of me everywhere. It was so beautiful, it was a truly transcendental experience both emotionally and categorically. Even the little music jingle scattered across the motion picture played in key moments painted a really vivid identity for the character, a very effective spice in the mix.

In terms of complaints, I wish the destinations of important events were explained better. I lost track of what was going on a few times. The villain was also a bit underwhelming. Lacks that memorable factor, especially considering the significance of their position; I felt that they didn't justify that position nearly enough for my liking. There were also some other bits and bobs that didn't link well together but they prove to be small in the grand scheme of things.

In summary, what a fantastic film. Almost masterclass standard. I have never personally watched a female superhero film before but after seeing this, where's all the funding at? Gal has to play as Wonder Woman again!

The big moments of the film seemed telegraphed from the beginning for me. The slow-mo was used so much that expected at one point during a fight scene Gal Gadot winking at the camera because of how "cool" she looked. I enjoyed the actors, and I enjoyed the plot, but for me I feel like the other DCU films sullied this one. Had she been given her own stand alone film BEFORE BvS, I think I'd have felt different. Since her film was already linked to that trainwreck though, I feel like it's "too little, too late" for the DCU films. I'd say Suicide Squad was actually slightly better (only slightly) than this and that's because it was simply a more "fun" film. Should you see it? YES. Would I pay to see it a second time/purchase it? Not personally. Expand

I was brought up in a society that valued me for my strength and confidence and ability to get stuff done. I just personally always felt there was something quite wrong with quite HOW I was treated in other ways and I wish I could have been raised on Themyscira, but I digress. Seeing how Diana learnt about our society and followed her heart and didn't let anything hold her back, that was pretty awesome. It is certainly a lot of female empowerment. A lot of the scenes in this, I could understand exactly how she felt and It was quite telling that this movie was directed by a woman. But the negative 0 and 1 reviews make no sense. I would suggest you take them with a grain of salt. They are suspicious. This movie cannot be argued by any means to have 'flat' acting etc. If I had to bet on it, I'd say those reviews are fakes inserted by someone with an ulterior motive.

Wonder Woman succeeds largely because of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Gal Gadot is a rare actress in appearance and bearing. I can't think of anyone today who could pull off Wonder Woman, especially with such heart while always maintaining a regal quality. Toning down the color of the costume was a good idea. One problem contemporary super hero movies face is, how to make the film without it seeming silly by definition. The way Wonder Woman handles this is by darkening the red and blue of the costume, setting the tale in the grim environment of WW I, and having her co-star as skeptical of her Greek gods-based theory of the world as the audience. The setup, as you likely already know, is that an island of women (Amazons) whose purpose is to protect men from the god of war (something like that anyway) encounters Germans during WWI when an Allied spy (Chris Pine) crashes his plane just off their island and the Germans come looking for him in boats. The Amazons fight them off and Chris Pine tells the women that - outside of their island paradise - the entire world is at war. So Diana, Wonder Woman, goes off with him to London to help end the war. She thinks she can end it by killing the god of war, a single being. Chris Pine has a more modern idea, delivering the intelligence he stole from the Germans to HQ. The rest of the story is Diana's discovery of the world at large, the dirtiness and lack of honor of modern warfare, and the discovery of her own powers, as she and Chris Pine each seek slightly different things together, he to destroy a factory developing a newer deadlier type of mustard gas, and she to locate and kill the god of war.

For a super hero movie Wonder Woman has a surprising number of tear-jerker moments, largely due to the fact that the WWI horrors depicted have a basis in historical fact; it has touches of humor, too, but it could use a little more of that. If the movie has one more significant flaw it is that - at no point do we know the limits of Wonder Woman's powers. So we never know how much danger she is in. I know from the comics that she cannot fly. In fact, as a kid one reason I didn't read Wonder Woman much was because she had an invisible airplane, but while the airplane was invisible, she was not. So the comic was drawn to show her in a sitting position whizzing through the sky, which just looked stupid. There is no invisible airplane in this movie, for that I'm grateful. But my point is - she can't fly, at least not in the comics to my knowledge. And yet in this movie she gets blown up into the sky more than once and descends lightly and slowly, in control, almost as if she can fly. And she leaps so high and far, it's almost as if she can fly. So the question arises, how powerful is she? Can she fly in this movie version? Is she invulnerable? She certainly takes a lot of abuse, explosions and so on, and comes out without a scratch. This is important because a key plot element turns on a decision one character makes to save her life. But at that moment I was not certain at all that her life was in danger, that her life COULD be in danger ever. And so I didn't understand why this decision was made. It was actually about 10 minutes after I left the theater, pondering what I thought was a plot error, that I realized that the decision that was made was necessary in order to save her life but the filmmakers just did a bad job of letting us know what could kill her and what could not. Wonder Woman is about compassion at least as much as she is about power. That's one reason it has so many sad moments as Diana takes in just what this war is doing to people. In fact the ending, in a key way, is a lot like the end of Return of the Jedi (without Ewoks).

Because Wonder Woman 2 will take place in modern times, not WWI (Wonder Woman doesn't age or she ages slowly), Chris Pine won't be in it. If Gal Godot isn't given someone good to act opposite, that sequel could be in trouble. Wonder Woman is so much in earnest all the time, she really needs a co-star to lighten the mood. Ben Afleck's grim bad acting did her no favors in Batman v. Superman. So for the next WW film that's going to be an issue.

If the movie rights licensees of DC comics have any sense, they will get Ben Affleck out of the Batman suit and replace him.

The special effects are impressive as is the acting of Ms. Gadot but that, unfortunately, is where the accolades end. The film is about 2 and ½ hours in running time (at least one hour longer than it should have been) which caused me to fall asleep at least once during its exhibition. To make matters worse, the plot is complicated, concocted and confusing, three “c’s which aren’t good for any film to have in its description. Mmmm... yes and no. While the movie really surprises me, being much better than I anticipated, with a strong cast and a Gal Gadot that actually does very well, a story that while very cliched is also nicely paced and with bombastic action, a musical score that while not as emblematic as Batman's or Superman's is very nicely done as at least in some parts capture the nature of the characters with excellence, you get a movie that does justice to the third part of the trinity and the biggest female superhero in comics. On the other hand, this doesn't mean that all the bad and bland done before is all forgotten, this is one shining example that the DCEU can be done right and with justice to the characters, and who they are supposed to be, but it's not enough to fill me with confidence going forward. Nevertheless, Wonder Woman shows not only that super heroines can be done right and have public acclaim (see Marvel? it can be done!). On the bad sides of this movie I have to include the not so well-developed and kind of bland villains (even if Ares in the final battle is neatly done), but also the lack of supporting characters that are well developed or interesting, and the first part on Paradise Island which is not that well handled and ends up a little boring. All in all, I can definitely say that this movie is surprisingly well, and give my recommendation for DC fans and movie fans to go and support it. Good job DC, see you can actually do it if you put a little effort, now replicate it in Justice League and we'll talk about start catching up with Marvel. Final Verdict: 7.7 Expand

Well, probably not. It is not bad (BVS) or one of the worst things that could ever be imagined (Suicide Squad), but Wonder Woman is still not some kind of a good movie. It is close though and decidedly "above average" as Chris Pine's Steve Trevor so neatly offers to describe both his looks and the film's quality. So what is the god killer in Patty Jenkins' first foray into the world of Wonder Woman? After firing and missing on its two most recent efforts, the DCEU lightened things up, but avoided the true cause of death: cliches. There is hardly anything original about the villain or other plot happenings and the film is crushed under this predictable weight. It is a beautiful looking film nonetheless, but it remains a rather pale and typical superhero film blended with a female empowerment picture.

It is in the latter that the film is perhaps the most muddled. As Diana/Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) encounters with the outside world begin in a "fish out of water" type fashion (featuring the requisite jokes to highlight how out of touch she is), she is treated very woman-like. Steve tries to save her from any danger and brings her to buy clothes. It is eerily reminiscent of Mila Kunis in Jupiter Ascending who, though she is known as the one who can save the world, spends 60% of the film cleaning toilets. Here, Diana is spared the scrubbing of an inner bowl, but is nonetheless forced into a womanly hole of having to wear flashy dresses and to act like a woman. Naturally, this all comes after Steve has seen her kick ass while in the Amazonian world. No matter, eventually the men will come around, correct? Wrong. Instead, every man that surrounds her consistently tries to hold her back, hold her hand and lead her around, or shield her with their bodies. With comments about how attractive she is and jokes about how attractive she and her friends are, the film further makes one wonder if this is really a female empowerment picture. Yes, women kick ass in Wonder Woman, but they are never treated as the equals of men. Even the dialogue uttered by Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) about the world describes it as the "world of men". The line about how men are useless besides procreation is a bit too much in the opposite direction (more about emasculation of men than it is empowerment of women). All in all, the film gives her room to take people down, but she is never given credit for her actions in a way that does not sound like "pretty good for a woman". Compared to Gamora or Black Widow, Wonder Woman is never able to not be a woman. Instead, every line and action by those around her serves as a reminder that, yes, she is a woman.

If the dialogue did not remind you, perhaps the camera work will. As Laura Mulvey so perfectly defined, this film is very much the product of internalized sexism. With camera work that focuses on Gal Gadot's ass and with the camera working its way up from the bottom to allow the scopophilic audience to soak in every inch of our superhero. For a film with marketing so focused on showing her to be a beacon of female strength, it seems rather fine with having her represent to-be-lookedatness and the result of the male gaze by the camera and the audience. Yes, the film tosses in Chris Pine naked once, but for a film about a woman and for women, it seemed more interested in objectifying Diana than Steve. In a similar vein, the scantily clad costume design is both problematic and not. For one, it is too much and only allows the camera to soak in more skin. On the other, Steve tries to get her to change because she is so scantily clad, which is equally problematic. If she is comfortable, why change? She should be wearing more clothes because, if it is armor, why must she wear a skimpy skirt and not full body armor like male superheroes and warriors? But, forcing her to change to be appropriate is like the film recognizing it is absurd, but also taking away her own autonomy when it comes to deciding what she can and cannot wear, giving control of that to her male love interest.

The film's stereotypical approach to women may be crushingly disappointing based upon expectations, but what is perhaps worse is how awful the villain winds up being. Turns of Ares is just a pissed of British guy who wants to destroy the world like every other villain in a superhero movie. Given no development beyond a desire to kill the world and having killed Zeus and other gods to follow through on this, the chief villain here is rather dull and, worse, is killed by the power of love. Gaining superpowers from grief and love in a scene that plays out like the "Save Martha" one from Batman v Superman, Diana is finally able to overcome him by, as she later describes herself, by discovering that love conquers all.

Horrible movie. Stale story, bad acting and very boring action. Someone should have edited the production a bit better. Makeup and costumes are out of date.

The result: What I expected, I have to say beforehand that I wasn't expecting much really. The good side of the coin in this one are the outfits and probably the setting. It's great to see that they finally decided to make a female super-hero movie, but unfortunately it fell short not as a super-hero movie but just a movie. On the other hand, on the bad side there are several flops like the lack of charisma in the characters and also the goofiness and sometimes overacting of Gadot. In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend to spend your time and money on this one, you would probably be bored by the first half, or either overwhelmed by its abusive use of slow-mo effects! Expand

In a sens the story is one of awakening. This produce a very fun type of humour and great acting from all the actors. The actions scenes are well placed and nicely choreographed. The FX are done very well. Of course there are questions left unresolved and why almost no one reacts more to the Wonder Woman manners, but this doesn't detract from the story. The music was ok, but not near enough the original Junky XL theme. I give it a 85% Expand

Certainly it is a step in the right direction in terms of female protagonist and DC films; the film works and more or less achieves what it tries to achieve. Expand

I hadn't watched the trailers or anything for this before seeing it, otherwise I probably wouldn't have. But isn't this freaking Wonder Woman? Where is the fun? Where is the color! But isn't this freaking Wonder Woman? Where is the fun? Where is the color! Isn't her uniform like a lot more fun than this Gladiator rip off thing happening all over this movie? And I know I'm arguing right now to get my point across, but does that have to happen this entire movie too? A lot of arguing. A joke about well how do we get to the island full of women with no men that seemed inevitable and then happened and everyone laughed and I was like you **** movie! I actually thought about how I'm tired of getting heterosexuality crammed down my throat so much all the time. Alien, men and women arguing every conversation, can't let a scene go by without a woman being objectified somehow. Even in Wonder Woman! And she keeps being told not to use her super powers and then not using it! You could have saved like 500 people at the same time you were trying on all those dresses like this is freaking Pretty Woman! What a **** movie! Chris Pine is that his name? So boring! Just like someone took a cheese grater and put googly eyes on it and said hey walk around and argue for an hour and a half. Someone next to me cried at the end, so what the hell do I know. Destroy all Heteros! More fun less every movie is Gladiator!!!!! Expand

The Greatest Female Lead Superhero Film Ever!
Gal Gadot is Powerful, Emotional, Beautiful and Fierce as Wonder Woman, and she absolutely shines brighter than any DC character shown on the big screen in recent years!
