Really? This movie?

Perhaps it's the fact that this is the biggest semi-theatrical release since Christopher Nolan's equally scrutinized "Tenet," or the wear and tear of the year 2020 on us moviegoers as a whole, but did any of us really expect this to be as good as the first one? This time around, the action is definitely more sparse, but still well-choreographed. The pacing is wonky at times, but the third act is an order of magnitude better than the first film's. In fact, that's not the only thing better. Here, we have a substantially more refined performance from Gal Gadot and a fantastically well-developed villain in the form of Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord.

Maybe I'm blind to the truth or just blinded by all the joy in being able to get to the theater again, but I really didn't hate this. I'm curious to see what the response to this would have been if this were a graphic novel or an episode of a Wonder Woman animated series instead.

Unfortunately this film lacks the simple elegant nature of the original and feels almost like a TV serial as opposed to a multi-million dollar action flick. Kristen Wiig stands out as Barbara Minerva, but her backstory is not really fleshed out. The premise of the film revolves around a magic rock, which again feels low in consequences. Overall well shot, but the blatant amount of 'fromage' really takes away from an enjoyable movie experience. Expand

Some scenes could have been edited out to make the movie shorter. In the first half Kristen Wiig feels like she was type cast from Ghostbusters as a goofy and clumsy genius.
Wiig at least feels less like she is phoning it in as the movie goes on. Pedro Pascal (the Mandalorian) Maxwell Lord though feels like a villain of the week. The films strength is the chemistry of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. As well as just Gal Gadot period. The weakest aspect is the plot that really isn’t worthy of Gadot’s Wonder Woman. The movie isn’t bad though. Since despite being too long. It isn’t an overlong bleak mess, like Batman v Superman.
However it is too long to simply give us another Christmas message of “be happy with what you have.”

It’s nowhere near as good as the first film, But it’s nowhere near as bad as critics and fans say it is. Yes there are quite of bit of parts that are sloppily written and ridiculous, But it’s still quite fun in my opinion.

Plot: 5

Originally slated to released in the late 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 had some delays due to needing more time to complete the film and going through the COVID-19 pandemic where theatres are closed down all over the world. After some setbacks, the ninth instalment of DC Extended Universe (which is now the official name of the franchise) has finally arrived before the end of the 2020. The movie is available to watch in some theatres that are open and in HBO Max at the same time.

66 years after the events of the first film, Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gadot) have moved to Washington D.C. and working as senior anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution. During work, she meets a woman named Barbara Ann Minerva (Wiig), who is an insecure woman who comes to idolise her but also envy her as well. After stopping the mall heist, Diana and Barbara identified one of the stolen antiquities called Dreamstone.

Unknown to each other, Diana uses the stone by wishing to bring her deceased her lover, Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine). His soul then inhabits another man’s body. Barbara also uses the stone by wishing to become like Diana which grants her superpowers and godhood. Later, an oil tycoon named Maxwell Lord (Pascal) stole the Dreamstone, an object he have been searching for a long time, during a party at Smithsonian Institution.

Hoping to use power of the stone to save his company, he absorb the stone and gain the power to grant wishes to people while also able to take whatever he wants from the others. Not only he becomes an influential figure, he also creates chaos and destruction in his wake as his powers trigger worldwide instability and conflict.

Unlike the first film, this movie is less superior than its predecessor. For the good parts, the casts’ performance are great. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have great chemistry with each other just like the first film. Their acting is great as in the first film. As for Kristen Wiig, I have doubt at first on whether or not she can play a villain character in this movie. Having seen her acting in this one, I can say she has done a great job. Let’s not forget about Pedro Pascal. He really plays a great villain and at the same time as sympathetic character. Wonder Woman’s character arc in this movie remain true to her character as established in the first film.

Now for the bad parts of this movie. The movie have less action scenes compare to the first film which is almost comparable to 2006’s Superman Returns which the movie suffered the same thing. This cause the movie to have some boring scenes. In addition, the fighting scenes were kind of a letdown. The story in this movie is notably weaker. Just like Bird of Prey from earlier this year, the story does not lead up to anything. Not a single one hint of sequel or to another event that set up a future movie. Despite this, Patty Jenkins did her best not to do too much of sequel baits which I think it is fine since doing too much sequel baits hurt a film a lot.

While this movie is not superior to its predecessor as I have mentioned earlier, this movie is still good enough to watch. It is still very much better than 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2017’s Justice League. Overall, Wonder Woman 1984 is not great but it is not terrible either. I still recommend to watch the movie. If possible, try to watch this movie in your local theatres if they are open and then watch it again in HBO Max. Unless if no theatres are no open nearby at you place, HBO Max is your only option. For international, do your best to watch the movie in theatres that are open. One last thing, stay back for a mid-credits scene for a surprise.

Good balance between dialogue and action. A few really lovely effects shots.

Diana seems to weigh nothing, floating through the air and landing lightly when she wants to. Most of the plot points come without motivation or setup. Just idea > payoff. Again and again, so it lacks depth.

The trailer pretty much shows the entire movie, so if you want to you could watch that and call it a day, but I'd say watch it and don't think too hard. It will not reward you for deep thinking.

Wonder Woman 1984 Spoiler Free Review:

Before I start this I feel the need to say that a fair bit of the criticism this film is copping is probably due to people going into it expecting a nice piece of Hollywood escapism from the **** show that is 2020. But instead, we got a story that was an attempt to say something about the times we lived in before Covid (despite popular belief blockbuster films featuring a little social commentary not just action sequences are hardly a new thing)

So the themes of greed, excess and putting our own needs and desires above others as well as the greater good featured in the film just don’t hit home the same way as it would have.

However, at the same time some of the criticism is well founded. The plot is a bit long winded and honestly the kind of stuff the filmmakers wanted to say could have been said in a far less roundabout way. I fear perhaps the filmmakers and the studio added so much filler that added nothing to the story in order to try and avoid backlash from the “STOP LECTURING US AND JUST BLOW STUFF UP” crowd.

The character motivations and arks in the film (outside of Max Lord) also felt a little underdeveloped and the way Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman behaves like a lovesick women unable to function without the man she was in love with comes off as kind of pathetic. If they were trying to sell it as undying love they pretty much failed. It doesn’t exactly scream girl power!

The way they set up Steve Trevor’s return as well as the plot device to sell the films themes seems a bit lazy. But I guess they were just going for a good old fashioned MacGuffin fuelled adventure.

However, with all that being said there is still PLENTY of things to like about the film. The acting performances are all pretty good.
Gal Gadot proves once again that she was the perfect choice to play Wonder Woman. Chris Pine is as charming as ever as Steve Trevor and his fish out of water routine proves to be just as funny as Gal Gadot’s from the first film.

Pedro Pascal does a great job with the character of Max Lord turning him into a more sympathetic villain. Ditto for Kristin Wigg who was everyone’s last choice to play Cheetah. In fact, it seems like the Director Patty Jenkins was trying to pull a page out of the book of Tim Burton Batman films by focusing on the villains and how they become evil. I quite enjoyed that.

There is also some pretty cool action sequences in the film despite some saying there wasn’t enough. But like the first film...the CGI was pretty bad.

All in all, while far from a bad movie it definitely doesn’t reach the same heights as the first Wonder Woman film. But I still think it’s a perfectly enjoyable popcorn flick all things considered.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 7/10. This movie has a message and a good one. But it doesn't deliver it very well.
- "You can't have everything you want" is the message. But Diana keeps the relationship she had with Steve 100% intact with the new one. She doesn't struggle at all, if she knows she has to let go, why haven't we seen her confront or even imagine that possibility even once in the movie? That's why the scene when she has to leave Steve is average at best.
- About the main "villains". First, we start with Cheetah. I only need one word: Why? She is this invisible woman, and all she wants is to be like Diana. And when she gets that wish, she's happy. But NOOO, she has to be greedy. I have nothing against greedy characters but you can't just turn a very sympathetic and innocent woman into a selfish one without any development. A complete turnoff. You should have kept her intact, wish granted, and make her CHOOSE to help Diana at the expense of her potential new life.
- About the other one. I make this question: Why does he want to give wishes to everybody? We don't know that as well. "Oh he is a loser and he wants everybody to have great lives". No. That's poor. Sufficient but poor. You need to give him better motivation.
- This movie touches on some aspects of "parenting". But we never see that developed as well

Every choice made here is weightless. Predictable. I think Wonder Woman, the first one, is the best DCEU movie to date and it's sad to see WW84 like this, a by-the-book superhero movie, typical superhero stops supervillain because hey "that's what they do". The ending is good I must say, but it's not about the end goal, it's about the journey, and whilst Wonder Woman was a Hillclimb, with Hades as the only flat surface on an otherwise very challenging road, WW84 was a Highway, boring to drive. Even the first scene, with the young wonder woman, whilst it was great (and the girl who portrayed her did a great job), is pointless. "That goddess or whatever was selfless and gave her life away to save the others. You shouldn't try to be successful, the time will come" like cmon. THAT CHILD worked SO HARD to win that challenge and YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST TAKE HER VICTORY LIKE THAT? See, I'm mad about that scene, not because it was bad, but because I CARED about young Diana and felt bad for her. But the scene is pointless cause we never see Diana cope with her shi**y caretaker or mom or whatever. It doesn't matter anyway since we get to see Diana saving people in the next scene and it's all good. It was the best scene of the movie and it was worthless. That's the last critique I have about the movie. Too lengthy, all filler, no actual cake

The casting was great, like always. Love Gal Gadot. WW vs Cheetah was a bad CGI fight. And my hopes for a great DCEU movie are fading away

My usual excuse if comic book movies end up being meh is that the writers had no choice but to follow similar stories to the comics and that restrained them

Yet, cheetah and Lord Maxwell’s origin stories are in no way similar than theirs in the comics.
But I guess the writers were forced to find a way to bring cheetah’s and Maxwell’s origin stories together with some sort of element that wouldn’t necessitate any strong comic book knowledge for viewers that aren’t very familiar with the DC world. And that element the “Dreamstone”
And I do enjoy the Dreamstone and it’s place in the story. I definitely thought the narrative that we should sometimes just let some things go was good.

Despite the odd pacing and lack of action which is extremely difficult to ignore, the movie was OK, but definitely not better than the first one

Miscellaneous:

• impressed by Kristen Wiig’s performance • some people were trying to find a parallel between Lord Maxwell and Trump, I don’t think there was any, a failing businessman with blond hair doesn’t mean there’s any direct link, it’s not that hard to find that in movies
• The whole 80s nostalgia element was sufficient, people are sincerely complaining that there wasn’t enough and I don’t get why

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a slow-paced long movie, that tells a personal story of the three main characters (Diana, Barbara, and Max) in a quite satisfactory way, but leaving opportunity for future developments. Like Barbara Minerva's character, her transformation as Cheetah is overshadowed in the film and not as exciting as it should be (being the archvillain of Wonder Woman) . The character's ending in the movie is ambiguous, wether she kept her powers or not, but it opens up the possibility of Cheetah's appearance in future films.
Maybe they made this movie as a launching pad for future films, so it didn't feel like a good sequel. But overall, the story, CGI, and the movie is quite enjoyable.

Both the stakes and the runtime should have been scaled back, as the film goes way off the rails, but Wonder Woman 1984 gives hope to the post-Zack Snyder DC filmography. Expand

The not so good... The script is a bit of a mess. Shortcuts abound -- sometimes WW discovers powers that she just happens to need in the moment. Some things are never fully explained when you need them to be explained, you're just expected to pick up on it. There's a scene where WW is speaking in a low voice and can be heard perfectly, when the ambient noise is causing the other character to yell to be heard. And one rescue scene is just irredeemably bad. Lots of little things like that that pull you out of the moment.

In all, it's not a terrible movie. It's just not a great movie, and as a fan of the superhero genre I doubt I'll ever watch it a second time.

While pining for her true love (Chris Pine), she comes to numerous rescues… on the DL. Two villains emerge: Max Lord, a greedy huckster who wants to rule the world (Pedro Pascal with verve but not special) and The Cheetah, a mousy researcher with a wish for super powers (Kristen Wiig who manages to subtly incorporate her comic charm). The evil-rules-the-world theme is tired and the evolution of the story is rather dumb. What we really care about is the action and there are some moments that thrill, but most of the scenes aren’t spectacular. To make matters worse, the attempts at emotional drama get in the way of a good time. After the engaging spirit and rousing stunts in the original, this follow-up doesn’t manage to instill the same magic or thrills. BTW, look for the real-life daughters of Gadot and Jenkins in a snowball toss near the end with Gadot’s hubby and other daughter riding a carousel in that sequence. NOTE: Sit thru the early end credits for a wonderful surprise cameo. Expand

The film has started to open overseas and will arrive in the U.S. on Christmas day with a limited debut on HBO Max as well.

The story sees Diana now living in Washington D.C. in 1984. Diana is popular but has refused male companionship as she still longs for her late love Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

Diana works in the Smithsonian Institute in antiquities and keeps her secret identity under wraps even when a daring mall heist forces her to leap into action.

A shy and passive employee named Barbara (Kirsten Wiig); who is afraid of her own shadow and largely ignored by her peers is befriended by Diana and they discover one item from the heist is inscribed with the ability to grant a wish. Unknowingly Diana wishes for Steve to return and Barbara wishes to be more like Diana which sets a chain of events into motion.

A shady business man named Maxwell Lord (Perdro Pascal) has his site on obtaining the relic as he believes having the ability to grant wishes will allow him to save his failing business and give him the power he craves.

With such a promising setup; the film ultimately does not deliver on its premise and becomes bogged down in drawn out sequences with surprisingly little action and gaps in logic that defy even standards for a comic book film.

The first 90 minutes of the film has roughly 10-15 minutes of action tops and we are instead given lengthy scenes of Steve trying to find an 80s fashion look; flying over fireworks, and Maxwell trashing from one locale to another without much needed continuity.

An action scene involving a convoy chase through the desert seems very inspired by “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and ultimately does not deliver especially with such a long gape between the action sequences.

The final act does attempt to redeem the film as seeing Barbara transform into her new persona is interesting and Wiig does a very solid job with the role. This sadly is undermined with a single line of dialogue which takes away a big part of the transformation that audiences deserved to see.

There was also a sequence where Diana races down the streets and takes to flight with her Lasso and then discovers she can fly like Superman. Not only is this not in keeping with the character; but we see this extended fast moving sequence where she is clearly heading away from D.C. at great speed only to arrive at a destination with an item which had been established to be back at her home in D.C. It is this sort of sloppiness that really detracts from the film. There is also the fact that Steve has to fly her around on a jet that even as a pilot he should not know how to fly as he has never flown a jet aircraft in his life.

When the big confrontation comes it is a letdown as it is not overly epic and the CGI really does not seem to mesh. What is an even bigger disappointment is that a certain character stands emoting for several minutes while Diana gives such a bland and extended speech that even my wife had to ask “who wrote these lines”.

The film was not a total disaster as the characters were interesting and worked well with one another making the film entertaining in parts despite being really disappointed with it.

The film strikes me as a product of the talented Patty Jenkins being able to do whatever she wanted after the success of the first film. Jenkins not only Directed but did the screenplay for it. Considering the amazing job she did writing “Monster” I had high expectations for the film but to me it seemed like it could have used a bit more attention to several aspects.

My summary would be the following… good cast, entertaining in parts, not much action over two hours, takes huge liberties with Diana and her abilities, massive gaps in logic even for a comic movie. It aims to be epic and comes up lacking. At least the mid. credit scene was worth it.

What works are Kristen Wiig’s performance and character development (the real highlight of the film), the combination of setting and aesthetics (1980s DC was done well and looked good), and an impressive final battle. What doesn’t work are the elements that plague all superhero films: thin writing, cliches, an uneven tone, and abundant cheesiness (it’s hard to watch without rolling your eyes at least twice). What’s fascinating is that the least interesting part of the film is the heroine - the titular character; Wiig’s more grisly, grounded, cynical character, however, makes the film worth experiencing. We last saw Wonder Woman during WWI and now fast forward to the 1980s Wonder Woman is back on the big screen facing two brand new enemies Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) now working in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. comes across a mysterious stone with the ability to apparently grant wishes to anyone holding it. The stone seems ordinary enough to everyone except of course the power-crazed Max Lord. Fear not as Wonder Woman is safely back in the hands of director Patty Jenkins, and beautifully accompanied by another stunning Hans Zimmer score. Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig are great additions to the cast, both making believable villains with clear motivations. Pascal particularly is stealing the spotlight and doing some real scenery chewing any chance he gets. Look, it’s not perfect and it has its issues, most of which you can overlook. I did feel it was missing an action sequence and it’s a little disjointed in places but despite that I enjoyed seeing Gal Gadot kick ass on the big screen again. Wonder Woman 1984 is a bright burst of 80s nostalgia with an old school superhero feel to it.

The days of sitting in a packed cinema are long gone and it’s uncertain when we’ll ever get back to that but right now the cinemas are open and operating safely so when you’re ready to get back in front of the silver screen again Wonder Woman 1984 is waiting for you, although depending on where you live you might want to hurry up and see it quick. Recommended for all you film buffs out there.

His character hurt the development of Babara. In some of the scenes, the CG is pretty bad, and the third act fight scene is laughably bad and wasted so much potential. Am I going to watch this movie? The effects of her jumping onto buildings like Spider-Man and when she don't have them, holding onto lightning bolts are from b-series tv movie. High heels shoes don't look good on her when she's running. The romantic and comedy scenes between Diana and Steve are very childish and absurd, not adult at all, the whole movie in general. There are scenes reminiscent of Batman from Schumacher. Invisibility is pulled up their sleeve without any explanation, it does it because the script says. The theme of "I don't need a man to be happy" is absurd and contradicts itself in the same movie, because she has been sad for decades for having lost her love. There are cameras even in the mall, however they enter the White House as if nothing, without any security. The villains are much better than in the previous installment led by great actors. The treatment of men is worse than in Birds of Prey. The action scenes are very good and the movie is not bad, but it has many flaws. The final battle is very good, but it is very short. Expand

I loved the first movie and thought this one was just ok. It's 2 and a half hours which is probably the worst thing about it. It's just not worth that much of someone's time.

Aside from that... they retread some old ground. In the first movie diana was a fish out of water and now it's steve's turn but... it's not quite as funny in my opinion.

Also Kristen Wiig as a villain... terrible casting. She'd be fine as a geeky best friend but as someone ignored, gradually turning evil... she just can't pull it off. Plus realistically... she's not nearly as attractive as gal gadot. It's kind of weird having her as a rival.

The action is pretty good though and it's well shot. Some pretty solid performances. Not a great script or story. Just some nonsense about a magic wishstone. Overall... it's fine but a big step down from the first movie and too long. 2 hours would be much better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. WW84 was an ok film. The story had an interesting premise but some elements were poorly exploited. The Cheetah came way too late into the movie and that didn't setup that villain very well. The main villain was fine but got too much screen time. Renouncing a wish should have been more spectacular and include a time factor. The FX were not always accurate. Some composite scenes were pretty bad (children pickup by WW), some felt totally CGI. The flight scenes were pretty good. The acting was solid from the main actors, less from the rest. I like the emotional parts but the Christmas scene at the end felt incredibly cheesy. What happened to Cheetah ? Don't know. The music was average at best. I give it a 60%. Although it's not bad movie, it's structure and story decision is left to be desire. The second wish for Cheetah, just broke the main accepted premise. Expand

It’s drags at times and it really feels a bit dumbed down without solid creativity. Theirs a few bright spots, fight scenes are okay but they don’t make Wonder Woman feel like the bad ass she is. Pedros character is alright, I feel like he would have been a better side character though. I’m giving it a 6/10 for the bright spots, it’s an easy to follow movie that does at the minimum have a cohesive story.

Naturally WW84 is the must have digital movie ticket of year end 2020, so we delved into it with gusto. Sadly this franchise seems to have lost its way a little.
One of the great appeals of Wonder Woman is her tie to the timeless past of greek mythology, and after hinting at a dark link with ancient origins, nothing further was revealed in that wasted storythread. Instead we get a trite, shallow, snake oil salesman routine on a global stage. Instead of a focused journey of growth and discovery, we get fire fighter Diana running from one flaming chaos to another. Gal Gadot plays her part beautifully, especially in her heartfelt scenes with Chris Pine. Some of those moments were heart wrenching as she reflects on the sacrifices of the past and future. Pine really rises to the occasion with maturity and resourcefulness. Pedro Pascal started off well but devolved into a melodramatic heap. Kristen Wiig also started well but descended into a shallow, vicious creature. Such wasted potential. Though the events of this movie play out on a global stage, the magnitude and investment is lost in a blizzard of pettiness and self serving motivations. There are no grand historical themes, no lessons for mankind, nothing of substance. I actually wonder if Jenkins was a one hit wonder, and if we should worry about Rogue Squadron.

In my experience, I personally enjoyed it while also seeing why others won’t. The last half hour of the film is where most of the negative criticism lies. Though the rest of the movie was great, the last half hour and final conclusion were the most disappointing and least memorable. One thing that heavily annoyed me when watching was the fact that Maxwell Lord has the same amount if not more scenes than Diana. He’s not even a character worth having this many scenes because he is just a boring antagonist. Maxwell Lord was definitely the worst part of this film unlike the second villain, Barbra Minerva/Cheetah. I absolutely loved seeing the slow transformation of Barbra becoming Cheetah throughout the film. I wish that the movie only centered around her and Diana since she was the best part of the movie for me. Expand

Whoever had the idea for a villain like that, can bugger off. because DC had the best villains ever.. But in this movie, not only is it that they tried to make not one but 2 convincing villains with backstories and failed in the process. But also, The hero of the movie Wonder Woman... it was just not there for me.. I mean the point where she was losing her powers and stuff, that could have been made to be so much more interesting, but it was just not there. Massive disappointment. A Letdown for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apparently there was rumors that had messages within the movie. Maybe it did, but didn't bother me all that much. Kristen Wiig didn't bug me all that much, but you do expect a joke here and there. Just wish yhere was more Cheetah. Patty Jenkins has got to fid her footing in finding a believable bad guy. The Max Lord in the comics was ruthlessness evil. Didn't believe in this bad guy. And Chris Pine really didn't need to be in this movie. Could have done without, but that's my opinion. And as 8 see it, many others. Loved the first movie, gave it 9.5. But this one, I give it a 6.5. So be warned. Expand

I’ll say it...I’m a Superhero Movie Junkie. I love them all. I think a “6” is about as low as I can go. Superhero movies are exciting, entertaining and I’m usually captivated throughout the entirety of watching one. This movie was no different, but...

The bar was high for Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot was/is an incredible Wonder Woman and overall superhero. There’s a mystery and intrigue of this character that always has me on the edge of my seat. The intrigue was there for Wonder Woman the character, but lost on the movie. I actually enjoyed all of the performances of this movie. Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Chris Pine are each exceptional in their own right. The storyline is where the mark was missed. The opening scene of the movie was a throwback to Dianna’s youth. The scene was awesome, but the connection of that scene to the rest of the movie was lost. You could maybe make a far reach of how Dianna had to... no... no you can’t. It was lost.

As the movie gets going you quickly learn Wiig and Pascal’s motivation for their characters. The two actually want the same thing (to feel important and to have more “x”), but Pascal’s character takes the biggest leap to attain it. The beginning and middle of this movie are excellent. The story line is presented, the obstacles are unfolding and even Chris Pine’s resurrection of character makes some sense. The end of the movie, however, really loses its luster. The reason for Pascal’s villainous demise was completely lost on me. A cheap pep rally from Wonder Woman seemed to turn the tide (I suppose the son’s wish could have been the reason, but it never seemed like that was the case). The final 20-25 minutes seemed very rah-rah and not from the typical superhero way you would expect. In this film, the inevitability that good always “beats” evil prevailed because good is just better morally than evil and not because of any stereotypical fight scene. While I’ll concede that this may be a movie that 2020 needed, it seemed like the type of movie that 10 years from now we will look back on and say, “That movie started really great, but what the heck happened in the end?”

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was wishing this movie came out. Unfortunately the wish came in the form of a monkey's paw clause. I lost 2hrs and 30mins of my life in exchange. I now renounce my wish to try to save the world from this movie. Wonder Woman 1984 is another score mark for 2020's disappointments. This is not quite the Cyberpunk 2077 of movies, but it could learn the same lessons from that debacle. This movie was undercooked and unpolished. WB definitely knew what they had and purposely used what goodwill it gained from Wonder Woman to leverage their streaming service. What will actually bothers most fans about WW84 will be continuity and the lack of context for new powers. This movie could have been fixed by either shortening it and fully make it a one off adventure movie that doesn't conflict with established storylines. The other way is to extend the movie even longer. Like how the Synder cut will be four parts. This movie need more time to cover all the villains and better contextualize her new powers. The plot holes alone will infuriate those dedicated to the establish DCEU. Whoever wrote this script took bits and parts of comics and decided to put it all in one movie and not give well scripted context to all these elements. I would almost say they were part of the last season of Game of Thrones writers. Another example of a great idea that was undercooked. It would've been nice to see WW gain her invisibility powers through some training flashback or anything besides, her Mr. Miyagi-ing it and just getting it to work perfectly. If you're stuck at home like me and have plenty of time on your hands, watch this movie. It's not a total waste, but you'll have some words on it after viewing. Hopefully the 3rd WW learns from it's mistakes. This also makes me very nervous about the rest of WB's 2021 release slate. I hope the Matrix 4 doesn't look like made for TV production value. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. WW84 gets unfairly trashed in the sense that, in a vacuum, it's not a bad movie at all. The movie suffers though, because the first one was so good. Gadot was awesome in the role as usual, and surprisingly, Wiig was fantastic in her portrayal of Minerva as well. The real issue with this movie, other than the pacing, is how Steve Trevor's return was handled. It was downright cringy, and neither WW nor Steve really see an issue with him inhabiting some other guy's body with no thought given to this guy's life. Other than that, WW84 is perfectly fine, just didn't live up to expectations. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A film that contains several defects, starting from the poorly written plot, to the management of Diana's powers, such as making things invisible (?) or flying (if he succeeds in 1984, why does he never do it in the present? Against Doomsday he would have served ...). But the acting, especially that of Gal Gadot and Pedro Pascal, is not bad, indeed, it is even good. Definitely a step back from the first film, but it's not all to throw away, although most of it is. Expand

A big disappointment after the awesome first movie.

The film starts off well enough, but it drags and slows down after the opening and gets... boring. I figured out the plot easy enough within the first 20 minutes after the opening scene. I was checking my phone halfway through to help keep myself awake (we watched at night), which I don't normally do when watching movies. Super corny, campy, and sometimes even downright stupid. Seriously. Some of the special effects scenes are also very... old-timey (obviously fake) and weird. When using CGI, you should never call the audience's attention to the fact that green screens are being used... it's that bad. Movies using special effects should always try to make it realistic and believable. This one fails at it. Heavy on the messaging, which is nice enough in these tough times, but a little too heavy and lots of spoon-feeding. Will never watch this again and I'm glad I didn't spend money to see it in theaters.

Since the release of “Wonder Woman 1984” on Christmas day, I’ve largely been AFK–that’s geek speak for “Away From Keyboard”–and have no idea if it’s been getting praise from more mainstream critics. It won’t be getting any from me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2017 installment, writing among other things:

“Hollywood finally got another superhero movie right (and it certainly took them enough tries). ‘Wonder Woman‘ strikes an impressive balance between action and comedy, and it does so in a way that is distinctly geared towards female sensibilities–a true rarity in the genre.”

The 2020 version, however, is just as disappointing as the year itself.

How writers Dave Callaham, Geoff Johns, and writer-director Patty Jenkins went from such highs to such lows is beyond my comprehension. Compared to the original, nothing in “Wonder Woman 1984” is compelling, from the storyline to the action sequences to the cinematography and beyond.

Taking just one brief burst of thirty seconds or so as a sampling, logic and continuity were repeatedly spurned as I thought to myself, “Why would a fighter jet be accessible to someone with Smithsonian clearance and just be sitting on a runway ready to go?” and “How could a World War I-era pilot possibly fly an 80s-era fighter jet?” and “Fighter jets can’t fly direct from Washington D.C. to Egypt without refueling” and “Since they just established that it happens to be the 4th of July (purely for the visuals, of course, not furthering the actual plot in ANY way) why was everyone else acting like it was a typical workday earlier?”

Again, because it bears repeating, all these complaints of mine are from a single sequence. If I were to type out everything I feel is wrong with “Wonder Woman 1984,” I’d wear out my keyboard.

The bottom line is that Jenkins & Co. seemingly got so infatuated with the idea of constructing a movie around the concept of the Monkey’s Paw that every other element had to be crowbarred into the theme, everything else be damned. It’s a shame, as the legacy of the Wonder Woman film franchise has forever been damaged by “Wonder Woman 1984,” making me wonder if Jenkins herself had previously wished upon the paw and is now paying the price.

After so much time and all the delays it had, it's strange to realize that the expectations far exceeded the results, and that personally, Wonder Woman 1984 was a massive disappointment.

Clearly the success of the first film granted Patty Jenkins ample freedom, but that doesn't translate into a good movie, much less a great story, and Wonder Woman 1984 is an excessive and cartoonish film.
I can even go so far as to say that there were oversaturated moments that made me think of Schumacher's Batman & Robin.

It certainly doesn't fall as low as that slop, but Jenkins plays with a lot of elements that doesn't really help her film. Mainly, I deeply believe that it was a mistake to continue placing the character in the past. An element that also shows an implicit hypocrisy on behalf of the director, since she criticized Joss Whedon because Justice League contradicts her films, but this same film contradicts what Zack Snyder did in BVS, because apparently she forgot that Diana Prince herself says that she walked away from humanity 100 years ago, and 1984 shows that she did not do that.

I must say that at all times the decision to place the plot of the film at that time was more a whim of the director, than a real decision that adds something to the character, especially since we already know the sophisticated woman she became in the present. What Wonder Woman 1984 really is, is a love story in which the lead character ultimately learns that the easiest way is not the best option and she has to learn to let go. It's nothing new or innovative, but I assume that for many viewers it will be enough for emotional catharsis, especially considering that critics have called it an antidote to the reality we're currently living, which makes me think about what their reasons would be to value it, if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic.

And what's the worst sin in the film? Its villains and their remarkable lack of threat.
Pascal's character is the catalyst, while the wrongly chosen Kristen Wiig is the muscle.
Pascal is at least credible, Wiig's plot twist is simply laughable, and forced to work more by the structure of the narrative than because it has a specific or necessary weight in the plot.

Gadot delivers, and shows that the character belongs to her, and her chemistry with Pine is still genuine like in the first film.
Pine is her best support and anchor. Now her real challenge will be seeing her standing alone in the character's third planned film.

In small mention, I have to give kudos to Hans Zimmer's remarkable score, but thumbs down for the CGI and some VFX shots, since there are moments that look really bad, especially the scenes in which Wonder Woman is running.

In conclusion? It was more hype than anything else.
And for me it's one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

Patty Jenkins, the director, has the movie set in the 80s which isn't a setting that's common in superhero movies. They utilise this setting by having more vibrant colors compared to the grey, dim colors of the first movie. Also, the set and costumes designers do a phenomenal job in bringing the 80s to life.I also like the idea that it is kind of a reverse situation to the first movie for Wonder Woman. In the first movie, she was the fish out of water learning about the world outside Themyscira but here it's Steve Trevor instead. Due to this, we get to see a completely different Wonder Woman from the first movie and a slightly flustered Steve which was entertaining. The action scenes are also pretty fun to watch but they are nowhere near as good as the first movie to be fair. Also, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) was a surprising villain as he was more emotional and less stoic than I expected. Most supervillains in comic book movies, even the first Wonder Woman movie, are bad because they are bad and just stone-cold but Maxwell is more energetic than that which is different. On that note, I think the actors all do a really good job. Gal Gadot feels better than previous movies now as it feels like she has got the ropes. Chris Pine is still charming and charismatic and Steve Trevor. The chemistry between the two is still there and the best moments in the movie are the scenes where Wonder Woman and Steve are together. There are some emotional moments in this movie and Gal Gadots performance is incredibly convincing. Pedro Pascal is so good as the main villain and his performance throughout the movie as Maxwell Lord becomes more insane is very convincing and enjoyable to watch. Kristen Wiig as Babara/Cheetah, the secondary villain, was a controversial casting but I think she does a great job with what is given. Kristen is great as the weird and awkward Babara in the first part of the movie but is also great as the more confident Babara in the second half of the movie. On the other hand, the story is kind of disjointed and messy. It doesn't flow well and due to that causes some pacing issues. The movie is a whopping 151 minutes but this is fine if the movie was constantly engaging which this movie isn't. There are a fair amount of moments where the movie drags. Additionally, Wonder Woman's character arc in the movie is kind of weak. I feel like Wonder Woman from the beginning of this movie is still the same at the end of the movie. It doesn't feel like this movie was an important story to tell for her character and she even feels like a supporting character in her movie. The villains are shallow and cliche as well. Maxwell Lord has a son he loves which adds some humanity to his character but for the most part, he wants power because he just does. Babara/Cheetah motives are just so generic as she becomes villain just because she is jealous and that's it. I also disagree with the way Steve was utilised in the movie and felt the emotional moment with him could've been stronger.

I think my biggest complaint is how cheesy this movie is. I cringe so much in this movie even when it's meant to be serious. The movie is just laughably dumb at times and that is just kind of disappointing when compared to the serious nature of the first movie. For example, the mall action scene is just so cheesy with bad supporting actors, silly choreography and terrible lines. The movie also ends with a very cheesy message that they try to shove down the audience's throat. Instead of pushing the movie to new heights, the movie decides to embody all the cliches you can think of. The action scenes are fun, except for the mall scene, but there are some very noticeable and shoddy CGI. You think with all the delays this movie went through that they would fix the CGI but nope it's quite bad. An example would be the truck scene with Wonder Woman running along with the car and it's so green screen or the Cheetah CGI looking like it's from Cats (2019). On that note, one of my complaints about the first Wonder Woman movie was the dumb fight near the end against a dark-coloured CGI thing at night and Wonder Woman 1984 kind of does the same thing. It's not as dark and bad but it is just her fighting some terrible CGI Cheetah. Hans Zimmer who is a legendary composer does the score for the movie but it feels phoned in. Also, severe lack of 80s music for some reason. The score is just okay and that's not what I expect from Hans which is a shame. My last point is a nitpick but this movie is still set in the DC extended universe yet this global scale threat is barely mentioned. It just feels so weird that such a large scale event doesn't seem to be of that much important in this universe. Honestly, I don't even understand why the director made this a global threat because it didn't need to be. Also, the movie ends with no repercussions for some reason.

1) Jeez DC you're better than this..this is NOT gonna help you on the "MARVEL Vs DC SCOREBOARD"
2) I am I being unfair? This IS a comic book movie.."suspension of disbelief" is necessary for any movie like this..right? BUT THIS MUCH?!
3) Thank God I didn't waste my time and money going to see THIS in the theatre I'm gonna give this a (very generous) 5..cuz I think I now understand the intended audience for this..which I can only imagine is elementary school girls..little girls obviously because the message is clear..today a woman can be anything..strong, smart, beautiful and the "hero". Instead of wanting around to be saved by men..Wonder Woman can be the savior all by herself. Nevermind that everyone from Disney to James Cameron has been trumpeting this same message..yet doing so in a way that doesn't insult one's intelligence. If it wasn't for the fact that I was watching it with my now teen daughter who saw the original a few years back and loved it..I think I would've turned it off right about the time a WWI Bi-plane pilot knew how to instinctively fly a modern jet that despite somehow being a museum piece was fully fueled, primed and prepped to make a non stop flight to Eqypt (that fact that it was able to turn invisible soon after takeoff seems almost plausible by comparison).

Both villains were likeable and were played pretty well. There were a few good moments in the film. 'Someone else' was also very likeable albeit underused (undercooked? undersomething anyway!).

That's about where the good ends. An early scene is super corny/cheesy. Made me wonder if DC misunderstands fans that ask for their heroes to be more heroic and less dark, thinking they mean they want them and their villains and regular civilians to all be cheesy caricatures.
Diana does something incredibly selfish that essentially steals someone's autonomy and puts them in mortal danger for much of the film. I couldn't really stop seeing it that way. Her original action is unintended, following through on it is not.
The two villains are pretty decent, but the method of stopping the 'main' one seemed both weak and as though you could avoid consequences of your choices a little too easily.
I wish the Barbara character's other side got explored more.
CGI looked bad to shockingly bad in several places.
Felt slow sometimes. I think it is 2.5 hrs long and doesn't have near enough story for that.
I also have a continuity objection in Diana's power set here vs two future stories she has been seen in.
Unfortunately my review is that the original film was far superior. This wasn't terrible, but it is very forgettable. An aggressively average 5.

This movie is no where even close to the charm, humour, and great writing as the first one. This movie would have been straight up garbage if it wasn't for Chris Pine...he carried this movie.

Bad writing, poor action scenes and in-your-face identity politics turn what could have been a great continuation to the best female-led superhero movie so far into a nonsensical waste of the audience's time and money. It's not a zero by any measure, but it's not worth risking your health to go to a theater and get freaking COVID, and it's definitely not worth your money on VOD. Maybe at 5 bucks; watch it and be the judge. Expand
