Even so, this movie managed to retread every cliché and contrivance they could. The animals are rediculously anthropomorphized and idealized. To the point that there is no discernible contrast. Except of course that men evil and apes good. Really strange casting choices and overacting. Trying to lend such gravitas to something so poorly executed kills the story. Expand

Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the simian community are hiding in the San Francisco woods as the humans close in on them. After an attempt at peace fails, Caesar embarks on a personal mission of vengeance against the human leader, The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), leaving his community behind and accompanied by his closest allies. The film, directed by Matt Reeves and written by Mark Bomback, takes a more introspective approach, focusing on Caesar's internal struggles and sidestepping the pitfalls of previous trilogy closers by not relying on action and spectacle. The stunning imagery, mind-blowing CGI/motion capture, and a powerful score by Michael Giacchino, all contribute to making the film an astounding visual and auditory experience. Andy Serkis delivers a standout performance, and Woody Harrelson is also noteworthy as the Colonel. While the pacing of the film may drag in the second half, and some characters may take time to warm up to, "War for the Planet of the Apes" is a thought-provoking and emotionally-charged film that brings the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.

"War for the Planet of the Apes" es la tercera entrega de la franquicia reiniciada, ambientada dos años después de los eventos de "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".

'War for the Planet of the Apes' wraps up a great trilogy strongly.

I enjoyed this installment just as much as its two predecessors, all three films are just supremely entertaining and are very well put together. Caesar is a terrific character and continues to look fantastic in this; the special effects are top notch, even the way the apes are shown in shot is expertly done. The additions of Bad Ape and Nova are neat, too.

I'd personally rank it above 'Dawn' but below 'Rise', though there isn't much between them at all. Intrigued to see where they go with the proposed spin-off(s).

A fine conclusion to this re-booted franchise. For what is in the main an action movie there is a fair amount of depth and character development going on.

There are a lot of heavy, dramatic sequences and I would say this movie compromises entertainment for meaningful content. Everything serves the characters and story. This movie has death, suffering, plight, heroism and empathy. The effects are astonishing..

Apparently this movie requires an active viewer. A person actually has to show up, absorb the content of a film that will not pander to, "give me action" needs. It is surprising to me that the third film in this trilogy would improve so much on the previous two films.

The music both blends in and adds to the drama/action. Beautiful camera work in interesting locations, and several unique characters. This movie is full of great character building, and all the big moments really land where they should.

Overall, you should watch it for yourself and shouldn't believe in negative reviews. Those who gave negative reviews to this movie are those who wanted only fight/ action scenes and those who don't have knowledge of pure cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The third installment of the Planet of the Apes trilogy prequel, War for the Planet of the Apes, is the perfect way to end the trilogy. Sure, Dawn (the previous film) was hard to follow, but this film held on its own. The film now focuses more on the side of the Apes, with Caesar on his quest to avenge his son and wife. The cinematography was indeed amazing, however, there were too many plot holes. One of them was the Simian flu, which was mentioned but was not elaborated well, as the focus was more on the side of the Apes. Andy Serkis' performance was amazing. Woody Harrelson's character was underwritten and unexplored. Focusing on the Apes was not a strong move, and it made the film one-sided, unlike the previous films. But overall, this still is an enjoyable film, and a perfect way to close such an amazing trilogy. Expand

Any fears of the last part of the trilogy being a let down were quickly squashed as the critics gave high praise to the summer’s best intellectual blockbuster.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, we rejoin Caesar and his apes as they are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a merciless Colonel. After the ape family suffer unthinkable losses, Caesar struggles with his darker instincts and his ideas for vengeance against humankind. As the ape’s epic journey brings Caesar and the Colonel face to face, they are drawn into a monumental battle that will determine the fate of the planet.

Not a single frame is wasted by director Matt Reeves. The film is full of stunning cinematography from start to finish; with dazzling sets and locations which transport you deep into the middle of the ape’s world. War for the Planet of the Apes has probably the best use of CGI and motion capture ever committed to film. Caesar’s character has been rapidly developing throughout the series and now in the close ups, you can clearly see Andy Serkis in there more than ever before. All of his facial expressions are realised and you feel exactly how he is feeling. Caesar has become mythical himself and will go down as one of the most compelling characters in modern cinema.

The stunning musical score by Michael Giacchino is completely wonderful. It heightens the experience, enhances moments of silence, captures the tension and suspense and overall suits the material to a T. Giacchino is quickly cementing himself as one of the all time great film score composers.

Like the other previous entries, there are many Easter-eggs and links to the series. But this time the links are much more accessible to casual fans. The script expertly sets up the state of the humans in the original 1968 film while also setting up one of the original characters in a charming way.

There is much-needed humour injected into the film with the addition of the new character Bad Ape. Throughout the film’s sombre tone and dark setting, he provides some uplift. While being a hilarious and endearing character, he also surprisingly gives some of the most touching moments.

War for the Planet of the Apes is a stunning conclusion to Caesar’s story but also an incredible film in its own right. It’s the completion of a masterful trilogy which works extremely well as a whole story linking together. The Apes prequel series can now be added to the list of the greatest film trilogies of all time after pulling off the near impossible of not featuring one bad film.

Even theFor starters, this movie is a technological marvel and will hold up for years to come. The CGI of the apes is nothing short of amazing and you never think it’s CGI, you believe those are actual animals with personalities. Even the camerawork makes it even more believable, because you get close ups of these apes and the apes don’t look any less believable which is very hard to do with CGI. The use of real sets and how seamlessly it blends with the CGI is another marvel because in many movies today I can easily see were CGI has been placed, but this movie does a marvelous job of using both practical and digital affects.

Lastly, the king of motion capture, the man, the myth, the legend Andy Serkis! What else can I say about this man that hasn’t already been said about him in these movies. The man gives another Oscar worthy performance as Caesar and shows a totally different dynamic of the character. You see through his performance that Caesar is in a totally different place and has just had it with settling with the humans and fights only to protect his kind. Andy Serkis brings this character to life yet again through his great emotional movements and expressions he brings to life as the king of motion capture. You also see Andy Serkis bring all new, damaged, aspects of the character. You see Caesar still trying to cope with the events of Dawn that Koba caused and him still thinking about what could’ve been if they didn’t happen. You also see a scene where Caesar make a decision that goes against all of his ideals, but you find a way to agree with this decision, and Caesar acknowledges that it’s his own flaw. Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar nomination for this performance, while he probably won’t get one he solidifies himself as one of the best actors in the business. Andy Serkis will forever be the king of all apes only known as Ceasar.

I thought that this movie was a compete masterpiece, but I did have to nitpick some things for the sake of this review. To start off, towards the end while the apes are attempting a mission a lot of conveniences happened so the plan is taking shape. While that cliche is used in almost every movie, it was a little too obvious while I watching the movie. Secondly, the little girl in the movie, while she did a fine job I couldn’t say she was irreplaceable. This being because a kid actor who has to speak with the performance is, to me, automatically compared to Dafne Keen in Logan. When I compared the two performances, Keen’s performance kills the other girls performance, she did do a good job but didn’t shine as much as Keen did in Logan for a child actor. Lastly, I would have to say that Battle for the Planet of the Apes would’ve been a better title because war isn’t the main focus of the story, more like a significant part in the third act that the movie led to.

The last little problem I had with this movie was the act of a good human character in the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love being with Caesar more than with humans. But, in the first two, you saw certain human characters that made the decision of siding with either the apes or humans harder for me as I was watching the movies. In this movie, it is a little more black and white on who you should side with because there aren’t any humans that you see have compassion for the apes and try to help them besides the little girl. The story could’ve benefited just from a simple look of a soldier that thinks maybe what they’re doing is wrong.

I don’t want to go into huge depth about the movie because I want you to experience the movie yourself. All I say is that War for the Planet of the Apes is a masterpiece of a movie and gives you the conclusion to what now will be considered the best trilogy of the decade. You connect with Caesar more than ever, the story is investing and the performances are all great. Along with being a great action movie, the drama is in the forefront and is a great thought provoking movie.

Cesar Vs Mechant.

Much better than I expected. I didn't want to see another war movie even if it was apes and humans killing each other non-stop. A much more resonant story unfolds than my expectation.

I practice using Josh Whedon's rubric of "which genre does the script draw its power from?" In this case Matt Reves draws on three movie genres/stories: Apocalypse now war movies, Sergio Leone/Kurosawa western movies and the Bible story of Moses leading his people out of Egypt to the promised land. Matt says almost as much in the first half hour of the director's commentary. What makes this possible to cement the power from three different genre sources into one script is finding the emotional richness in each scene, in the shooting process and enhancing the emotional richness in the editing-revising. Matt talks about this in the director's commentary also. Quite a striking writing-directing effort, high art.

This film is far from the original planet of the apes, and honestly...resembles it in 0 ways. It was the most boring film I have seen in a while, esp for an "action" movie, and even yet, I enjoy some boring movies if they actually teach me something about life or the world, this film did none of those things. It was boring and pointless and just meandered thinking of Ceasar mostly, not much happening, and a pretty stupid movie full of a bunch of predictable movie cliches as well. Mediocre film, and not even worth the title of "planet of the apes" More like a disney version that was dark, boring, but yet had no blood and is a sanitized pile of poor "entertainment". 5/10. The plot was lacking a lot, and there could have been a lot more to this movie. The writing was just simply lazy. Directing style and editing style was rather average, and there was nothing new that an action movie could add. The actors where OK, and the pacing of the story was all right as well. But the story left desiring and it had no real message in the end. Which is the other thing, this title was the ending episode of this trilogy, and they made it too cliche and unsatisfying. And the biggest mistake was that it wasn't that much fun to watch than the first 'Apes' movie, and sadly wasn't entertaining enough to drag in new audiences. Also the visual effects where good, but exaggerated and straight out of a Michael Bay movie, which at this point is just boring. Overall it's a slightly above average movie. Expand

It may not be the bombastically action-packed finale that would be expected from a title like "War for the Planet of the Apes," but this film finishes the Apes origins saga in a way that's far more gripping, intelligent, and thought-provoking than a blockbuster could ever be expected to be.

Caesar ought to be cemented as one of cinema's most memorable characters. This movie completes his arc so powerfully as he--for the first time in the trilogy--confronts his demons and learns what it truly means to lead. The motion-capture is perhaps the best ever put to film as the apes' emotions are so effectively portrayed. Caesar is old, tired, and battle-hardened, as are his primate companions, and it shows. The human characters here are also arguably the best of the three films as the morality of all sides of the conflict are explored. Rather than painting this war as a black-and-white good ape vs. evil human sort of struggle, the story shows it to be a psychological war. It's a deeply complex political tragedy where evil deeds are done with the best intentions. It's thought-provoking in a way that is rarely seen in cinema today

Although it is the most effective of the trilogy, War does suffer from some very sluggish pacing. Slow-burning stories are not always bad, but this one does not have enough locations or differing events to keep it engaging throughout the entire runtime. The dialogue is sufficiently intelligent to mostly make up for it, but the film seems to end in a disappointingly abrupt way that doesn't quite serve as a payoff for the long, bleak drama that led up to it.

Nitpicks aside, War for the Planet of the Apes is an emotionally exhausting sci-fi tale that adds the perfect cap to the provocative themes and poignant character arcs of its predecessors and makes this trilogy one of the best sci-fi series ever put to screen.

While the digital "performances" are all the press junket hype has promised, the script is mundane and plodding. Serkis and Harrelson chew the scenery, but with flavorless bubble gum lines. The proper title of this film should The Decline of the Francise of the Apes. I am still undecided if this film is Netflix worthy.

After a subsequent viewing on HBO (I subscribe for Silicon Valley) it's Netflix worthy. I still stand by my earlier observations. Man, I miss Serlingesque stories.

How do they make me get so many feels for CGI apes? How?

I won't go into a lot of details about the plot of the movie itself. I will say however that the trailers are misleading... as in a lot misleading. Don't get me wrong, there is action, there is adventure, there is laughter and sadness. Yes that little girl is in the movie and she has an impactful role, but it isn't what the trailer implies.

Woody Harrelson does awesome as the cray cray commander of the humans. The fact that he emotes so well with a CGI character just means he is as good as I remember him.

The movie itself I doubt will win any Oscars except maybe for effects, and probably not that with so many Marvel/Star Wars movies this year. However, it is good enough that I didn't get dragged out of my suspension of belief. Also, this movie is a great way to wrap up the trilogy, and sets it up for future movies if they want.

Oh, and don't mind the tears, the husband is cutting onions.

The good: Almost everything is good, especially if you watch it as what it is, a Planet of the Apes movie. Acting, effects, story, etc. It is a great journey into the world of the Apes, and I definitely could come back to it.

The bad: Seriously though, attack choppers don't do strafing runs normally. They are quite capable of standing off in a distance and laying down death. Just saying that was my one annoyance (and probably one break from suspension of disbelief).

The plot was lacking some direction at times... and the villain...woody harrelson... was a bit conflicted ... which we will never know what his deal truly was. Was it Militarily centered... or some biological issue that the film sort of touched on? I guess we will never know. other than that.. good time on the couch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the most part, I liked the scenes where the apes communicated with one another, especially the middle of the movie where Cesar and his small band of loyal followers roam the countryside, meeting an endearing child along the way and a quirky, comic relief ape who's desperate for company after years of being alone. What I didn't like were the action scenes and a lot of stand off moments between Cezar and a sadistic, xenophobe, power mongerer Colonel that take place in a concentration camp. All the soldiers in this movie come across as fresh recruits, trained playing Call of Duty and watching Rambo movies. In the beginning they're seen charging up a hill into spears and gun fire, firing heat resistant guns on full auto with endless clips, hucking an absurd amount of smoke grenades for dramatic effect, and not even bothering to seek cover unless they're a recurrent character. For me, it all comes off as really ridiculous. These dummy soldiers also pulled off some spectacularly idiotic stunts, like having a wood wall built right beside a couple of completely unprotected, giant gas tanks. Hmmm, I wonder what could go wrong? They're also completely inept at guarding their own base. A little girl just casually walks into the middle of the compound with no one noticing. And at night, there's only 1 apparent guard overlooking the huge, ape containment enclosure located right in the middle of the base, despite there being several other guard towers and well over a 100 soldiers seen marching around during the day. And to top it all off, the 1 guard tasked with watching over the ape pen gets baited into it by having poop thrown at him. No, seriously. He goes in there all by himself.. And what happens? You'll never guess. They knock him out and escape! Ha ha! Who knew, eh? Also, only 1 dude notices they escaped later on. There's a lot of similarities in the movie that appear to intentionally mirror Nazism and the American civil war. The apes are kept captive in a concentration camp, where they're starved and subjected to forced labor by building a wall to protect the military base from an approaching Northern army. The movie's villain, a rogue army Colonel, basically does his version of the SS officer from Schindler's list, except a little more PG. His troops are brought out into the courtyard on a couple of occasions, where they line up in formation and chant fascist sentiments. While the comparisons were a bit on the nose, they were ultimately what gave a bit of weight to the movie. Hard not to hate Nazi's. Of course, there are a lot of scenes where the Colonel and Cesar have dick measuring contests, where Cesar always ultimately gets beat down while his people powerlessly watch him suffer in a similar manner as to what occurred in Japanese WW2 concentration camps. I personally felt there were too many of these scenes and they just dragged out too long. I get it, Cesar is powerless, the Colonel is a dick and Cezar's gonna keep getting his ass kicked until a dumb guard lets them all out. There's no need to make it so repeatably long and over the top dramatic. I'd say the CGI was actually pretty good for most parts, especially slow dialogue scenes and facial expressions. The action scenes were where it could get a little comically wonky. For instance, there's a scene where Cesar roles out of the way of gun fire, (with the bullets naturally flying in a circle around him), and it just looks ridiculous. But, it gave me a good laugh. All in all, I thought the plot was pretty generic and the action scenes felt over the top and corny, but I enjoyed a lot of the character interactions and dialogue. (Excluding the Colonel. God what a cliche). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you're bleeding from the nose, you'll find this movie amazing, sensitive and emotionally captivating.
If the Simian Flu still hasn't affected you, then you'll see this movie a cheap and boring passover+shoah knockoff, marred by political manifestos that stiff the plot and slow it down to a crawl. The CGI was amazing, although if you're not under the virus' influence yet, I suggest you watch the first 25 minutes, stop there and go read the following plot summary:
"A military faction led by the ruthless Colonel McCullough goes to war with Caesar and his clan of apes. Following a betrayal by one of his own, Caesar loses his wife and oldest son at the hands of the Colonel. Caesar sets off to get revenge, being aided by three of his fellow apes.
On their journey, Maurice adopts a mute girl that he later names Nova. They also encounter another ape that can talk, Bad Ape, who helps the apes find the Colonel's camp. Caesar is captured along with the rest of his clan as they are forced to build a wall to keep out McCullough's enemies, another military faction coming for him as they know he is killing off apes and humans who are regressing as a result of the Simian Flu.

Maurice, Rocket, and Bad Ape all help dig through an underground tunnel for the apes to escape, just as the other military faction arrives to start killing McCullough's soldiers. Caesar goes to kill the Colonel himself, but he finds McCullough in a degenerative state as well, and he cannot bring himself to kill him anymore. The Colonel commits suicide and Caesar goes to rejoin the apes, but he is hit with an arrow by one of the Colonel's soldiers. An ape named Red who worked with the humans then redeems himself by killing that soldier and helping Caesar get out, even as Red is executed for what he did.

The Colonel's men are killed when Caesar blows up a fuel tank, and the enemy soldiers are killed when an avalanche comes down, but the apes and Nova survive by climbing up trees.

The apes make it to a new home, but Caesar is dying from his wound. After Maurice assures him that his youngest son will be safe and know how heroic his father was, Caesar dies peacefully."
And please, whatever you do, DO NOT PAY MONEY FOR THIS MOVIE!

The first half hour is breathtaking. The cinematography is crazy (special mention to the shots with the apes and the girl riding horses on the beach). Tense start of the film. The first encounter between Caesar and the coronel comes so soon and is so explosive. Then the pacing becomes slower, but never boring, in an attempt at explaining things and develop the story. By the time the film ends one is an emotional mess. It is the perfect closure to the trilogy that also gives space to more stories, but don´t worry, it is an ending. In all senses. A tremendous journey for an oppressed group of sentient beings that earn their freedom. Tremendous. The level of detail of the film is pretty amazing too. And it also has a nice reminder of what the old films gave us when it comes to humans (I had totally forgoten than in the old Planet films humans didn´t...). The apes seem more real than ever. It´s absolutely breathtaking. This time, I would consider the film for an oscar nomination even if with no chances. Andy Sherkins would probably deserve a nomination too. Score very on point too. This is Reeves' Ape series at it's most emotional and powerful. The performances and motion capture are still in top form. There's even Steve Zahn this time around to give Andy Serkis a run for his money in both categories. It's got the bombastic energy of an action film, the brutality of a serious war movie, and the heart and soul of a compelling human drama. This conclusion to the Reeves trilogy is excellent and hands down the best of the reboots. While the door is left open for more to potentially come from the series in the future, War is good enough to serve as the conclusion of the Apes films. It's satisfying and a whole heck of a lot deeper than what typically comes to theaters these days. It does a lot you wouldn't expect. The one sour note is that Woody Harrelson's villain feel a bit underused. Yet, he's still given a satisfying arc. This has been one heck of a ride.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved previous parts of Apes but this one no - not really. Plot spoilers ahead so be warned. Whole idea of virus mutation was OK for me. It explains nicely why in those ‘future ape world’ from old movies Apes believed that humans are dumb and cannot speak. And as in the beginning virus was responsible for messing with brain (curing Alzhaimer) than dumbing down as mutation effect is even acceptable for me. But basically it’s the ONLY thing that I can accept in this movie. In previous part we had group of survivals that created colony and cannot reach any other ones for months until end of the movie. Now we hear about at least 2 full functional military outposts full of professional soldiers! Around 20 battle helicopters? This means at least 20 professional pilots, this means professional service teams able to fix and conserve them for 25 years! This means hundreds of tank crew members, SAM and LRM turret operators, and so on, etc. So what the hell? Was military personnel not affected by virus? Why? Or they were, most of them died out but survivors started to train EVERYBODY as weapon specialists? How could this be rational decision in post-apocalyptic world where people just got sick and died (maybe if it would be alien invasion but here???) How could they have resources for this to be functional? Where is farming? Who is feeding so many military personnel (that has to train and fix machinery). And colonel base was like essence of ridiculousness. Fuel tanks next to defence line? Building wall from stone and wood against missiles??? Or was he not aware that they will have helicopters, rifles and tanks? But how could he if they were working together until he started murdering sick people? And placing military outpost next to mountain that can cause avalanche? How this could happen? How come this never happened in the past? Was it first snowy winter in 50 years? This was just plin dumb. There were also a lot of smaller plot holes to name only few:
-little girl wandering unseen into military camp and wandering from cage to cage
-virus able to survive in minus temperatures on cloth doll and still able to infect uninjured healthy person (why the hell everybody is not sick yet if he is so deadly?)
-Ape waterfall camp found thanks to what?
- guard with keys going into prison cell with strong and mobile creatures not informing anyone because someone throwed facies at him? Was he dumbed down by sickness already?
But none of those smaller plot holes are making whole world unrealistic and unbelievable as those bigger problems do. And previous parts had good believable world! Why they needed to dumb it down, why this comedy sidekick was needed?

I'm increasingly of the opinion that reviewers are being bought and reviews are astroturfed.

This was a really boring movie with weakly developed characters, a pointlessly downbeat setting and overly angst ridden in general. The first 2 reboot movies were innovative, clever, well acted and scripted, had plausible characters, both ape and human and had real conflicts at their centres.

This has a few secondary characters who get a ton of screen time for absolutely minor plot points, implausible scenes aplenty and ridiculous deus ex machina resolutions.

Terrible movie. I can't believe they spent over 150m dollars on this turd.

Good sequel, it has everything you need to remain interested in the story, you again complement with the apes and hate Woody Harrelson. The writer is a genius to continue correlating a story that I thought could not squeeze more juice.

I would even say the whole human epidemic part of the plot felt very out of place. Colonel's motivation behind the homicides and his final suicide was not really justified in depth. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fitting and altogether satisfying conclusion to the new Apes trilogy and the most complete and thematically satisfying one yet. Harrelson is a pure nutjob villain but he at least starts to hint at the some of the broader questions the characters in this universe should be asking more of - namely what does this do to the evolutionary ladder/food chain and what exactly does it mean for God and souls? (this still gets short shrift, probably to avoid alienating audiences). He sees himself as a messiah delivering the human race from a scourge of its own making - he doesn't seem to hate the apes so much as understand objectively what they mean for the human race. He's more complex this way.

There are some homages to the original Planet here too - the little girl is named Nova and the flu has mutated causing humans to become less intelligent (this is not what is meant in the original film but sure - it does can explain why humans don't fight back and can't read). Some of the final scenes are a little too on the nose and ham-handed. Caesar as the real messiah leading his people to the promised land. The gorilla that finally turns good at the end (this scene could have worked but is dumb in execution - Caesar almost dies anyway). The apes survive an avalanche because they climb trees - this is what is meant by an evolutionary advantage apparently. Between that, the mutated flu and the old version of it, this explains how the Planet becomes one of Apes. It works but feels a bit over-engineered.

I really appreciate how this trilogy of Apes films is a character and theme based work first. These films use state of the art CGI in order to create more believable characters and tell a tale not possible any other way (I mean, yeah makeup, which I do miss, but still for the new films this is what works). There aren't many overblown action scenes that dominate and wear down the film. This is what franchise big budget moviemaking should look like.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As much as certain elements of this film were truly above and beyond, I definitely feel like Dawn (the previous movie) was better. It was quite disappointing that there wasn't even a war between the humans and the apes. Also, the "epic" ape dialogue in it was even more obviously mundane sentences slowed down for dramatic effect. The CGI was great and the story overall was well done but I honestly enjoyed this movie around a 7.5/10 score due to its shortcomings. Still worth a watch for sure, though. Expand

Worse then that, it changed the original premise of the apes movie history...it made humans the aggressor. In the original series and stories, man destroyed itself allowing for evolution to be in the apes' favor. Even worse than that, this movie is political and represents the pure hatred of the Hollywood liberals against humans and specifically Americans. They even play the anthem during a bloody scene of Americans killing apes. Walked out before it ended for all these reasons. Hollywood got rich from Americans and our culture. They are a disgrace for hating Americans and human-kind in general. Worst film of the year by far....not even entertaining despite all the politics. Expand

"Rise" and "Dawn" were incredible films, and now "War for the Planet of the Apes" proves to be an outstanding conclusion to this fantastic trilogy. Emotional, action-packed without feeling mindless, brilliantly written, beautifully shot, fantastically acted (especially by Andy Serkis), the film has it all. If you see one film in 2017, make it "War for the Planet of the Apes."

Wouldn’t like to sound like a party pooper, but „Planet of the Apes“ surely must be one of the most depressing of all the successful movie series of all time.
I do not consider shooting (or other kind of cruelty against) animals a fulfilling entertainment, even if it happens in a movie and the animals are extra intelligent apes who can fight back.
I am often too lazy to follow movie franchises after seeing the first part, because I find most of them too boring and/or heartless.
Despite that, I have seen all three „Apes“ now. The experience has been kind of depressing, but also, in a way, good cinema. There’s something weird and wonderful about seeing animals acting so expressive and human.
This is what good cinema is all about – making us see the world in a new way, feel something (even bad), be ready to transcend beyond the usual borders and limits that we use to make our usual life less scary and more rational.
So, despite being part of a franchise and all, the first two „Apes“ movies (2011, 2014) managed to make me care, even if the quality of storytelling felt rather mediocre, especially in the part deux.
I am sad I can not say the same about the third one, because „War for the Planet of the Apes“ just sucks.
It’s boring, charmless sequel which has maybe 20-30 minutes worth of good stuff (mostly in the end). It does not really show war as promised in title, but there’s also lack of action altogether, or heartfelt drama.
They have a lot of mediocre story instead, and take their sweet 140 minutes to get there – aiming to create epic end to trilogy.
Which doesn’t even matter much because there has already been promise for future sequels. The first and second episode managed to gather 481,8 and 710 million dollars from cinemas, of course there’s gonna be more!
The biggest letdown must be the aim to turn the movie more into drama than action. But it is difficult to create a convincing full length dramatic story based on animals looking sad and worn-down – although it surely works with short-form web content such as videos, articles, memes, or photo series.
As a result, the core of the movie felt like a parody of similar, mostly youth adult oriented takes on dystopian society and suffering, such as „The Hunger Games“.
It’s shallow, soulless and sometimes just stupid – some big things happen because they are supposed to, rather than evolving naturally from the characters and their actions.
In „War“, there are exactly two characters than made me care about them, neither in the center of the story. Firstly, comic relief monkey performed by Steve Zahn. And secondly, a bad guy played by Woody Harrelson – easily the best thing in the whole movie.
The character may not have been very intriguing on paper, but Harrelson’s performance makes it most memorable, adding depth and powerful presence to otherwise limp story.
As years go by, Harrelson (aged 55 now) has become a bona fide screen legend, a powerhouse actor so awesome that he owns almost every scene he appears in, no matter who or what he shares it with. He is a true master, and the only thing in War“ that feels magical, not soulless rehash.
I know, the star of „Apes“ should still be Andy Serkis performing as Caesar. But the character has become more and more one-dimensional over the course of the trilogy so I had trouble with caring about him at all in „War“.
Caesar's become something of a storytelling device by now, needed for advancing the story but not enriching it in real way.
Most of the event manage to create so little emotional impact that when the finale started, I I already struggled to remember any good parts from before.
But I liked the „biblical“ ending very much. So, the trilogy has a pretty cool finale, at least!

Flying audaicuously above the need for explosions, gunshots, and giant, CGI-laden set pieces to help tell its story, "War For The Planet Of The Apes" - much like how this year's "Logan" was so different from other comic book movies - sets itself apart from other, more traditional "summer blockbusters" by simply having a good story at its heart that's sopping wet in its director's own, unique vision. Featuring a stunning lead performance from Andy Serkis and some truly taut, PG-13-film-tropes-be-damned drama, this piece really is the sendoff that this noteworthy franchise deserved and needed. The reboot launch from 2011, "Rise" (10 rating here, and best movie of the year) was excellent because it was a compelling, very clever origin prequel and it had something called dynamics: big story arc, variety of locations and scenery, unpredictability despite the audience knowing where ultimately it was leading, and a wildly good action climax while not totally original, about as much so as these franchise tent pole Hollywood blockbusters get these days. The follow up, "Dawn" (8 rating here) was very good, but not as clever or dynamic as it was a more typical dystopian sci-fi entry lodged in the same dark muddy woods most of the picture. What it had in spades was suspenseful moral conflict making it highly watchable.
Now "War" is just more of the same but not nearly as well plotted, original or unpredictable. It's another overlong slog put out by passionless, spineless studio execs who no longer challenge self-indulgent directors! Its formal filmmaking style is welcome and the VFX are good once again but nothing amazing or visibly new.

This movie starts off with a bang and continues for about 40 minutes until we reach the second half of the movie and i have to admit it is an absolute slog to get through. Dont get me wrong the ending in my opinion makes up for the horribly boring scenes in the middle. Perhaps the best reason to watch this movie is the incomparable acting by Andy Serkis, who again rises above anything else in the movie and proves to be the most essential asset of this franchise. A sweet surprise is also the direction of Matt Reeves who truly takes us back to old fashioned film making with beautiful shots and amazing performances. Finally the score of this movie by Michael Giacchino is absolutely breathtaking and excels at every chance it gets to shine. Overall the start and ending help this movie to become a true experience.
