You're better off watching Black Panther, because even if it's mass produced cape trash it's at least not a film that attempts to make slave traders look like the heroes of history and the people they enslaved the villains.

I didn't think much of this one based off the posters and previewsViola Davis leads a cast that depicts the Agojie, an all-female group of African warriors who defend their home and tribe from the men of the Oyo Empire in the early 1800s. I didn't think much of this one based off the posters and previews initially. It just honestly looked like nothing we haven't really seen before, but the rave reviews and apparent A+ Cinemascore it received convinced me. And while Davis is as excellent as always, the film's storyline and plot beats really are all too familiar territory. And with the exception of Davis, the lack of character development for most of the supporting characters made them feel all too one dimensional. However, the film also does contain some epic and entertaining battles scattered throughout, and it's hard not to admire the film's extensive production values and design. But overall, Davis is is top form here and carries a commanding presence from start to finish, along with some epic and expertly-choreographed battle sequences that make up for a familiar-feeling story that lacks character development. "The Woman King" is a good movie. It's brilliantly staged, with fun set pieces and a bevy of terrific performances. However, in choosing not to tackle some of the more controversial elements within the history that it's based on, it all ultimately feels like a bit of a fast one is being pulled on the audience. Make no mistake, there's no shame in liking a movie. Seemingly no external harm will likely come from people enjoying "The Woman King." I just think an even better movie could have come about if the filmmakers in question chose to confront certain historical actualities from a more post-modern perspective. That being said, it's still a feat as a film. Just not necessarily as a representation of facts. Expand

It literally uplifts the people who enslaved our own people as if they are the good guys. These people were the villains, they were the provider of slaves. White people didn't go into Africa hunting down tribes. It was this tribe that did it for them, and built their entire society on it. They would have them lined up in cages along the beaches to present their "goods." They were so bad, the French came out twice to force them to stop slaving. In absolutely no way were these good people, and this movie is a bad attempt at rewriting history. Horrible movie, made for horrible reasons, to try and make horrible people look like the good guys. It's insulting to the black community, world wide. Expand

Imagine, if you will, a world in which the descendants of slaves making a film exalting and covering for the very people who captured, mutilated, enslaved, and then sold their ancestors.
That is the Woman King.
It's hard to imagine a more offensive movie.

For anyone who knows anything about West African history, this film will be extremely difficult to watch.

While a slight tweaking of facts is understandable in a dramatization of actual events, the Woman King is a wholesale fabrication.

Put another way, there is significantly more outright lies than accurate representations of the Dahomey dynasty.

What makes that so unforgivable is that they are trying to exalt as heroes the inner circle of a kingdom that was built entirely on slavery.

Alas, they do not stop there.

The makers of this movie ignore the fact that Guezo created female assassins because all the men under his rule were sent to capture him more slaves he could sell to increase his wealth and power.

Moreover, the actual Dahomey female guard were not true warriors; their job was to slaughter anyone who got close to their not well liked leader.

This reality was illustrated when the women "warriors" had to deal with French soldiers, who easily killed the vast majority of them with ease.

No one should watch this film because it is seriously a very offensive and warped misrepresentation of basic truths.

With so little being known about West African history outside the region, this was a beautiful opportunity to share it will the world.

Instead, they churned out a despicable piece of propaganda that seeks to rewrite history, which is a grotesquely offensive thing to do to all the ancestors of individuals who were enslaved by King Guezo and his minions.

But because I've almost always appreciated and liked the roles that Viola Davis chooses, I gave it a try.

After Viola Davis declarations about what it would mean if people didn't went to see the movie, a big part of me wanted nothing more than to not even see the movie. But I took her statements, as her making a huge mistake, that might hurt an actual good movie.

And as it turned out, I wouldn't have lost anything if I hadn't watched this movie.

From Viola Davis, to Lashana Lynch Izogie and others. The performances were for the most part solid, and the natural beauty of the African continent all helped to make the movie tolerable.

However try as they might, and they did try, history didn't happened that way. Not exactly. The Woman King gives you the Hollywood edited version of history, but it doesn't give you the actual history. The ugly side of the tribe that Nanisca (Davis) is portraying.

It's understandable why they did what they did, seeing the times they were living, and the movie should've owned that, instead of trying to embellish the truth. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would've understood, or at least tried to understand what was happening historically in that period of African history.

But apparently they are too ashamed to own to their own history. Maybe because the actresses and actors, didn't even bother to study the history of what they were going to be portraying.

The movie is not good, not really. It's watchable, not just because of the performances but also because of the beauty of the African continent, and also in part the culture as well. However they could've cut twenty minutes to the movie and you'd have lost nothing.

It has too many moments that are slow paced, and then it just puts in the fifth gear and doesn't slow down. To the viewer that doesn't know anything about what they're watching, they might be deceived into thinking they saw a a movie about female empowerment, and how to fight against oppression to preserve one's freedom. Because that's what the movie tries to sell.

And it's really because of the embellishment of a hard reality, that was the reality of those times, that I couldn't really appreciate this movie. It would be like applauding inaccuracy for the sake of creating a nice story, instead of owning the truth and show how many times sacrifices and hard choices need to be made.

I completely understand how some people might be more than willing to close their eyes to those things, but the dual standard isn't lost considering other historical movies were also a target of great scrutiny. And if memory fails you, then remember the criticism done about Kingdom of Heaven for not accurately portraying the Islamic side of history.

So if all other historical movies have been subjected to critic of their historical accuracy, then The Woman King doesn't get a free pass. At least not from me.

And then there's the story of the movie itself. Completely predicable from beginning to end, some of the dialogues were cringe as cringe can be, and some actresses like Viola Davis tried to sell their roles so hard that it came out as far over the top.

Twelve Years a Slave was a great movie, however The Woman King is not. It's watchable in a way that you can see it and pass the time, but without ever getting pulled into the story.

This movie will add nothing to the career of the actresses and actors in it. And it will add little to viewer, that spends the 135 minutes watching it.

And so there's no doubts, this movie lost me because a) the story isn't good enough b) the story is too predictable c) some performances are just too over the top and d) the historical inaccuracy is unforgivable.

In the course of frequently checking my watch, I was subjected to 2+ hours of sloppy writing attempting to cover historical fuzziness, despite the film’s contention that it’s a historic epic set in an alternate historical timeline (which is kind of like claiming that someone is almost a virgin or just a little pregnant). On top of this, the endless saga is peppered with too many extraneous subplots that detract from the protagonist’s narrative, silly story elements that don’t make sense, far too many repetitive war dances, corny dialogue, frequently gratuitous and credibility-stretching fight sequences, and a disappointing performance by Viola Davis who tries to come off as a badass African-American female version of John Wick. The finished product thus ends up playing like a project put together by a committee of producers. To its credit, the picture includes historical material that some might find uncomfortable, a few noteworthy and heartfelt scenes in the home stretch run, and modestly entertaining touches of comic relief, but that’s small compensation for everything else this one gets wrong. I’m sure politically correct viewers will eat this one up, especially when it comes to addressing matters of female empowerment, but I also can’t help but wonder how any enlightened woman would look at this and say that the secret to being a better individual is to act more like male macho schmucks. Because of all this, I’m truly at a loss to understand what so many critics see in this release. Even as a pure entertainment vehicle, it just doesn’t measure up compared to many of the other action-adventure offerings out there. Wait till this one comes to streaming – and only then if you have nothing better to do. Expand

Perhaps it pushes the message too much and makes a basic mistake when stories like these try to project powerful women.
And by this, I mean that, in the urgency to show them as wonderful and amazing women, it forgets to give them a true identity.
This is not to say this film is bad in any way, but a problem does exist.

Granted it has the negative historical aspect on its side, but even though this film is extolling these warriors, the fact that there are people still beating themselves up about what happened centuries ago doesn't deepen that discourse at all.

Now speaking of the film itself, even with the distinct premise and how convoluted it can feel, the spectacle makes up for it enough to keep your attention and while it never quite lives up to the promised epic, it's far from disappointing in that aspect as well.
Along with great production work and design, this story immerses you well enough to provide the audience with an entertaining moment. Which I believe it aspired to it more, than even the resonance of its message.

Just left the movie and I must say that #thewomanking is a great movie!

Solid story, awesome battle scenes, great character build, gorgeous photography and way above the avarage actors.

I strongly recommend fantasy and historical lovers to watch it. It was indeed a great surprise just to be off a bit of mainstream comedy behavior of action thrillers nowadays.

#violadavis as Nanisca is a giant as usual, but Izogie is freaking awesome and the young Nawi is pretty good too.

The battles are believeble, the woman most of the time make uses of their speed to win fights and you see the danger when they are fighting other trained warrior males.

I'm sorry to see so much hate around the movie. It surely does not deserves it.

This movie proudly proclaims it's "based on an historical event." If that's true, then the battles portrayed in the movie were fights to preserve the lucrative slave trade that the Dahomey society depended on.

According to Wikipedia, "The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves... Captives taken in warfare were sold to Europeans or became slaves in Dahomey, where they worked on royal plantations and were routinely mass executed in large-scale human sacrifices during the festival celebrations known as the Annual Customs of Dahomey."

Dahomey also is famous for being the birthplace of Voodoo. Lovely place.

Damn, it's hard to diss a movie that so much work went into, and where so many great performances were offered.
But the disgusting way that the writers have turned villains into heroes and sold a fake history lesson to the public cannot be overlooked.
This country was a despicable, slave-owning, slave-trading, totalitarian regime and its Amazon army, composed of girls who were themselves enslaved as children, were how the country captured its slaves.
Viola Davis is great as the fictional character she plays and the whole thing looks spectacular but none of this matters a damn because its all a cash-grabbing lie.

Thanks, MC, for not going full RT yet, hiding the rating behind "verified audience".

Isn't it awesome?

The keystone to slave trade across centuries, the kingdom of Dahomey is a subject of a film. You know, the same Dahomey that kept enslaving Negroes and selling them wherever they could long after every last country in Europe banned slavery.

The female formation, which in history was squished like a gizka in their first engagement against French(?) infantry and was, historically, all on-board with the slave trade and slave labour, is shown as the invincible superheroines who also are abolitionists.

Now imagine the critics' reviews if someone made a film where the Confederates are the obvious, Jesus-like saviours of all the black slaves tortured by the Northern White Walkers, where they squash the Union nazis in a quick campaign and go on to rule the world in the name of extinction rebellion.

I did imagine. Too bad I can't just do what the wokies would actually do, so I'll just give this turd a well-deserved 0.

These where slave traders. Also the only reason that women and children are used in warfare is as a diversion and confusion tactic to hurt morale for the opposing side. If you honestly think that a group of women could put up a fight against male warriors you are probably also a sheep who thinks that men and women should compete in boxing and mma with disastrous results. We even have to divide the genders in banal things like soccer for that matter to give the women a chance to compete. You need to look in the mirror and realize that the person who stares back is a foolish sheep who swallows any modern lie that is told to you.
