Her vocal performance in the songs are the only parts of the movie that come anywhere close to the original. I know the suspicion going in was she was cast for the sake of diversity, a race swap for the sake of race swapping for 'woke points', but whatever the reason was she is absolutely tremendous and feels every inch a real life Ariel. Well done her.

Oh and I liked the use of vivid colour in Under The Sea. And it kept my two little ones entertained for an hour before they began to lose focus.

There, that's everything I can possibly say nice about this. Everything else - all other songs, the rest of the cast, the bloat added to the plot, the... literally everything - is a trainwreck, as in as bad and as uninspired as it gets, right down there with other calamitous Disney live action dross. But with this one you also get the added bonus of CGI nightmare fuel throughout. I'll see Flounder in my nightmares for years to come. I get the movie isn't made with my demographic in mind, but I can still judge it on its own merits, especially as a father. And it's awful. It has sole but no soul.

Remarkably dark and sinister in places, the underwater characters bob and sway with all the grace of a drowning victim, as if undergoing some macabre ritual to transform into a sea creature, but frozen halfway through the process. NoRemarkably dark and sinister in places, the underwater characters bob and sway with all the grace of a drowning victim, as if undergoing some macabre ritual to transform into a sea creature, but frozen halfway through the process. No performer stands a chance. Not due to lack of talent (although that's a problem too, primarily with the childlike void-simpleton prince) but instead there's too many problems to overcome, too many terrible decisions to rise above. It's as if the cast thought that their faces would be animated too in the end product, and therefor maintained a static expression as instructed. I also find it totally hilarious that we're given Javier Bardem in a fright wig and pearlescent merman armor, and yet it would be a total stretch to give the main animal characters just a little more expression or personality of any kind, as opposed to the thoughtless, absurd looking deathmask versions in the film. And then you get to the final scene of the film, which is more akin to a fan-fictioneer afterthought. Just in case people missed the main message of the film and needed a simplified version. These are the kinds of things that make me happy I haven't brought anyone into this world. If for no other reason than to spare them the indignity of these films. For its much much harder nowadays to keep your kids safe from the digital age. Expand

Too dark to see, too long, too bland. She's a great singer, I'll give her that. But like most animated movies, The Little Mermaid simply doesn't work in a live-action setting; and especially if the story is fundamentally unchanged.

So I'm just going to write a simple review Now.

The film is long, agonizing, Dark and Painful to the source material of the original film. Please do not waste your money here on this film, I gave it a 4 and then after it sunk in I gave it a 3.
I am fair towards all films and do not simply bomb a film with a 0.

Meta Critic, Do not remove my review Or I will post this in its place.
I will update this review later from memory.

The CGI is wonky at times. The romance scenes seem forced. The songs are underwhelming and don't hold up to the original at all. The only song that I really liked was McCarthy's Poor Unfortunate Souls, because it stayed true to the original as much as it could. McCarthy was also really good as Ursula, and I think she fit into the role quite nicely. Also, really liked the fact that Jodi Benson had a cameo. I will never forgive Lin-Manuel Miranda for putting The Scuttlebutt in the film. Not only was it cringe, but it was annoying. I also had a hard time sitting still as the movie was 2 hrs and 15 mins long. The changes were unnecessary and add nothing to the story. Save yourself. Watch the original. You'll have a better time of watching that, then you will this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halle Berry sings very good but her acting is okay.

Comparing to the original animated movie, the original little mermaid movie has more life to it than the remake live action is. Part of the scene where Ursula said about calling Ariel as Red. This is the fluke that Disney made which I am looking where is Red. There was no Red. The song that Prince Eric sang was boring.

2nd fluke that Disney made is that braided hair won't last underwater. It is very unrealistic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched the original cartoon 13x as a preteen. I have no issues with the casting and love the diversity, but it’s really so BORING. How can it be boring when they just copied the cartoon? Sure, they added some backstory but not enough backstory like they did with Maleficent. Ursula was bad for no reason. Melissa McCarthy tried to ad lib some 3 words to make it her own but she still ended up so boring. How can Ursula be boring? Sebastian also is BORING compared to the funny cartoon one. Maybe because he looks like a tasty crab with no facial reactions but his expression and singing were so bland. Regarding the mor developed love story, yeah sure… Ariel and Eric are made for each other — they’re both hoarders, hate their parents, and escapist reckless adventurers who got their families in big trouble. Whoopee. Yep, we should teach our kids to be like those two. I was looking forward to the diversity under the sea. The daughters of Triton representing the 7 seas were magnificent and I love how my Asian sea was represented. But that’s just 20 seconds? Ok maybe 30. But then again, Disney teaching me to be woke is all about that lecture? I mean, the ocean has way undiscovered species with fish of different colors and creatures. Why should the merpeople represent the way surface dwellers are represented? Shouldn’t there be merpeople whose skins are blue or yellow? Can’t those fish also be represented just like they did in Aquaman? A little thing with diversity - yes it’s great and appreciated. But there’s this part where forcing it and lecturing the world about it when we’re supposed to enjoy a movie makes it lose its message. I loved Halle Bailey’s voice and performance but with Ursula, Sebastian and Scuttle all acting soooo sleepy, the Prince acting like he’s always on edge, etc. These things really don’t get me to think it’s a good updated tribute to the original. By the way, Disney, if all your live action remakes are just copies of the cartoon, why even do it? This is the opportunity to retell the story with new eyes and even provide a backstory we didn’t know, just like you did with Maleficent. You missed an opportunity with Cate Blanchett in Cinderella (Gregory Maguire did a better backstory.) Now you missed this with Ursula. You could’ve given her some moments about why she was banished or became an outcast. She ended up with just being evil for no reason. So if these are all we will expect from Disney’s live action, let’s just watch the cartoon. Expand

First of all, the highest score that I can only give is 3 points, 1 points for special effects, 1 points for music, and 1 points for the evil princess, which is the only beautiful female in the movie.

The plot is quite boring, there is nothing to say, the overall feeling is very cold and difficult to empathize.

The good part of this movie is underwater visual effects and music.

The underwater special effects are not as good as the Avatar 2 but better than the Black Panther 2.

There is no need to talk about the lead actress' race and appearance, everyone understands. However, the lead actress singing skill is good, it would better for her to be a singer, not an actor. But her voice is more like the voice of an adult woman, a mature and powerful type of voice, feeling very incompatible with little mermaid, don't feel like a young teenage female. The Internet says that Beyoncé taught her singing? Maybe that's why.

In terms of acting, only little mermaid's father and that evil octopus witch have good acting performance, all the others have zombie face and dead fish eye, when the standard of being a actor become so low?

The most beautiful one in the whole movie is the evil princess, which the octopus witch transformed, but the total appearance time of her is like less than ten minutes, what a shame! And this actress looks like a young and skinny version of Adele, also with similar accent, maybe because they are all British I guess.

The animated version is far better (and managed to tell a tight story in 82 minutes; this version is bloated). After all, if you didn't like it you are.....wait for it.....r-r-r-r-racist! Yes, that old chestnut again. The folks who didn't enjoy it simply had a problem with the changes from the original, as well as the subpar CGI and the cringy songs (that Scuttle rap....ugghh!). Not to mention the virtue signaling, which is unfortunately ever-present in today's media.....and no, pointing that out doesn't make you racist! In short, stick to the original movie. Expand

Every single change is made for the worse. The feeling that the animation invokes is completely lost in a film that's trying so hard to hide it's disdain for the themes of the original but it just can't help itself. The animals look terrifying. Changes made to the plot, although admittedly small changes, are still significant enough to make you scratch your head and ask "Why would they do that?". But then you remember that it's the mythical modern audience that this was made for... It's not worth the price of admission by a long shot. This review has nothing to do with politics or anything like that. I didn’t enjoy this movie or ANY of the changes they made to the original story, the music was disappointing, the casting was misguided at best, dialogue below mediocre. I wanted to give it a fair shot, like I have all the live action remakes and every time I’m shocked at how bad they are. I set my bar pretty low and Disney somehow manages to undershoot by miles. Just stop, stop ruining everything and focus on creating good/new stories. I still believe you’re capable of it, despite all evidence to the contrary. To be honest I wanted to give it a zero out of 10 but that wouldn’t be fair. I’m sure most of the people including the cast worked very hard on this, it’s not their fault it was a massively disappointing mess. Expand

And that horrible scuttlebutt song...that was insane. How did that pass quality control?

I watched the original film for the first time after watching this and understood why everyone was so upset about this film. This new one is dull and lifeless with dumb modern touches that destroy the timelessness of the original. Disney needs to fail. I finally accept it and hopefully the disastrous indiana Jones sequel coming later this summer will put the final nail in the coffin. Films like this make one realize how cynical and empty and hateful and greedy the people redoing all these stories are because you can actually go back and watch the original which transports you into a fairytale the way it is supposed to.

Let disney die. Nothing of it remains, anyway here.

Good riddance.

My wife is a huge, life long fan of the little mermaid. To the point that she has a tattoo of the original. She wanted to walk out of the movie less than half way through. She (and I) were disappointed by the story changes, the unnecessary changes to songs/new songs, the CGI, the acting and more. The CGI was bland, the acting stiff and lifeless, they destroyed the supporting characters, they changed Ariel from a young woman who was curious and excited about the world outside, but was taken advantage of and needed to overcome the unknown to now being a girl boss who doesn't need any help, knows how to do anything/everything, and has an "I'm better than you" attitude. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I promise, this is not brigading…I actually paid to watch this crap! The Little Mermaid is definitely not the worst live-action Disney remake but it is the most frustrating by far. It is a mess of differing tones, great cgi mixed with laughably atrocious cgi, over-acting mixed with wooden acting. This movie doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Tone - starts off as visually darker, more gritty, and more realistic (the sea life looks and acts like they’re real.) Missing a few of the musical numbers from the beginning of the animated film, but then halfway jumps to bright, vibrant cartoonish colors and lighting and haphazardly goes from one song straight into another. They even gave Scuttle the bird (voiced by Awkafina) a freaking RAP. And all the musical numbers have that annoying sing-talk-sing-talk formula.

CGI - underwater elements looks good, except the characters themselves. Hair sometimes sways with the ocean, sometimes it looks like a helmet. When characters are fully computer generated, their faces look like bad deepfake (there’s one scene with Ariel near the end of the film where it doesnt even look like she has pupils). The finale with giant Ursula is so dark it was obvious that it was intentional to cover up the laughable cgi. Acting - Halley Bailey was usually good (sometimes overacting though) in scenes by herself, but has awful and blank reaction shots whenever anyone is talking to her. Melissa McCarthy is understandably hammy with her overacting to the point where she wouldn’t be out of place in a bad off-off-Broadway production. (For Venture Bros fans out there, she sounds EXACTLY like Red Mantle.) All of Ariel’s sisters are wooden that they give Gal Gadot a run for her money. Akwafina was Akwafina. Prince Eric guy was okay, but his performance made me wonder why this movie has five different accents in one region…British, American, Spanish, Caribbean, and New Orleans??

So why did I waste my time and money on this turd? I was excited to go to a movie theater with my kid, who is four. My kid has that new glimmer of excitement when I ask if they want to see a movie in a theater! But it is very telling how bad a movie is when your four year old says it’s, “kinda okay”.

So, where to begin? For those who still thinks, this is racism based cause the main actress which was chosen is a black woman.
It's a BIG NO, you're wrong.

It's because Disney ruined memories, demandings and trample on the original. If anyone really think, it's because she is black is blatantly wrong. Furthermore the decision, that is clearly made on a woke base, is just wrong. Politics should NEVER have an impact on an original.

Facts: If Disney really wanted to be an woke ambassador, why not creating (and risking) a black mermaid on a brand new name? Thats the second thing, why this remake deserves the flop status. No one would care about Halle Bailey as a Mermaid. People care because Disney used expactions from the name Arielle. Create new male or female heroes, even trans or black, wouldn't create that outcome.

When you have zero respect for the original, you get what you deserve.
Not true? Let's take a look at The witcher when Henry left, let's take a look at the Witcher spin off, and also the Rings of Power.
I swear to god disney, if you ruin the Frozen Movies or The Fox and the Hound i will never ever touch anything again related to your company. Than you give more about politics than creativity.

Songs were rewritten because they no longer seem contemporary. This film winks at Ednie who has nothing to do with the original. Poor CGI little color except for the actors. And Triton also seems to have had his fun with all the mermaids around the globe, because Ariel's sisters are apparently Asian, African, German, Nordic, etc. Where even the woke nonsense doesn't even make sense. The latest in Disney's attempt to cash in on all their old IPs instead of making something new and original has finally hit the screens and it's not great.

A far cry from the bright captivating colors of the original, this ocean is dark and muted. Have the animators even visited a coral reef before? Or are they just trying to hide imperfect CGI by just turning down the color and brightness? Perhaps they should watch Avatar 2 to see how to do a stunning live action underwater world right. The live action aspect actively hurts the film due to making the non-human characters unexpressive at best, uncanny valley at worst.

The run time is bloated, and although they have added some extra things in to fill the time, you kind of wish on the whole that they didn't. The rap song is particularly bad and doesn't feel like it fits at all with the rest of the music in the film.

Halle can certainly sing, but that's just not enough by itself to save this movie. Like many of Disney's remakes that have gone before, there's no particular reason for this live action remake to exist apart from being nostalgia bait. A low effort way to try and reel audiences in rather than making something shiny and new. Give it a miss and watch the original instead.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This monstrosity is not an adaptation but a distorted vision of people who try to forcefully throw ideology into everything. The plot makes no sense - why is Ariel's father supposed to convince himself of the people - who, according to this version, killed his wife and Ariel's mother, when all the work in the finale is done by our little mermaid? That was the point of the original - the prince showed that he was worthy of a little mermaid despite the fact that he is "only" human. But of course, the screenwriters' delusions must be stronger than the positive message of the original. Expand
