Meh. Not a good script, plot holes and unnecessary childish jokes. The Force Awakens made me think about a lot of possible theories, this movie makes me think if I really want to watch the next one. In conclusion, a very big disappointment.

Every major character question or plot advancement comes down to this: "it doesn't matter. your heroes don't matter. Jedi's don't matter. Those intruiguing backstories you want to learn more about? They don't matter."

We get it: This is a NEW Star Wars, intent on installing fresh faces. But why all the plot holes and needless trouncing of iconic characters? General Akbar gets killed while the purple haired kindergarten teacher is immediately immortalized? Luke sees his old lightsaber, the lightsaber that Obi Wan gave to his father during his training... then was passed onto Luke during his growth as a Jedi... Yeah, that lightsaber? Toss it out. It's dumb. Doesn't matter.

At no point does Rey receive any instruction, training or coaching in the ways of the force. She's simply bestowed them and rises about Luke Skywalker himself in power...

Why did they go to the casino city again? To make a point about weapons dealer ethics and animal rights? Wait...what? (When they did get thrown in prison, a master codebreaker happened to be chilling there, with a key to escape. He must have been waiting there because... oh... that's right... IT DOESN'T MATTER.

The cinematography: Gorgeous.
The locations (other than a needless casino subplot): Fantastic
The writing: Very, very lazy and subpar.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just like everyone else I went into this movie with large expectations that were unmet once again. This movie feels like a cheap imitation of "Empire Strikes Back" the similarities between the two are so blatantly apparent:

* An opening battle at the beginning that involves the resistance on the run from the First Order
* The force-sensitive character spending the majority of the plot away from the rest of the characters, "learning" (I use that term very loosely) from the old master on a secluded planet. * The old master being reluctant to train the student due to past mistakes * The rest of the characters being pursued by the bad guys for much of the film yet unable to get away
* Said characters taking a risk by recruiting a new hacker character from a flashy location, who's motives are unclear.
* The Jedi-apprentice character going into a dark side cave, being made to face herself then leaving her "training" too early to rescue her friends
* The hacker betraying the people who were counting on him
* A "revelation" (if you can call it that) about the force-sensitive character's parents
* A major confrontation between The Jedi Apprentice and the big-bad-emperor-archetype * Kylo Ren turning on Snoke and killing him due to Rey's influence
* Land speeders facing off against AT-ATs on a planet covered in white powder (might as well be snow)
* The rebels being scattered and broken at the end, but with a sense of hope and a mission

Stop me if ANY of this sounds familiar. This movie basically took the entire plot of Empire Strikes Back and threw in some new visuals. There are many bad decisions throughout this movie that hurt it:

- The "Revelation" of Rey's parents being nobodies pretty much wastes all the hype built up from the last movie
- Snoke being killed by Kylo Ren almost effortlessly (Why didn't he just do this earlier?)with no backstory being give. This makes Snoke seem like a typical stock character meant to move the story forward
- Leia's sudden use of the force with no training (that we know of)
- Captain Phasma being dispatched with literally no character development whatsoever
- No Jedi Training
- Forced humor
- No Lightsaber duels
- Yoda (his appearance was pure fan service. Totally unnecessary)
- Luke's demise, such a massive waste of Mark Hamill's talents.

There are only a few bright spots in this movie:

- The force connection between Rey and Ren
- Snoke's force powers
- Rey and Ren fighting together
- Luke's Force Illusion

I've found that most of my friends that are casual Star Wars fans really enjoyed this movie. The special effects are amazing and Mark Hamill and Adam Driver's acting are terrific. The truth is, that if you hold Star Wars close to your heart and were moved by the original stories (and even the prequels), the plot is going to make you question the direction the story has gone in. I expect more from Disney. You will absolutely be entertained by this movie but are you going to think about wishing you were a Jedi or any other character portrayed in this movie?Absolutely not. When exiting the theater I was very confused and dumbstruck at the wasted potential of this film, and how it could have been made to be just as great as the movies from the Original Trilogy. Mark Hamill says it best "In Hollywood — remember kids — it's not important of high quality, but only when it makes money." The Force Awakens, even with a re-hashed story is far more likable than The Last Jedi. Expand

There is a padded out middle with a needless side plot that contributes nothing to the story. It gives more time to throw away characters, but still leaves them as throw away characters by it's resolution. They also include an odd technological plot point that feels more like Star Trek than Star Wars. There are so many holes in the story left by The Force Awakens, but The Last Jedi uses it's long run time to create it's own new holes instead of filling the old ones. You can totally tell which scenes were added for those re-shoots that delayed the movie from May to December and they were completely unnecessary. I think TFA is actually better overall because while TFA replaced story with action, TLJ replaces story with just... well nothing much really. Filler. The jokes are mostly bad but they don't distract too much from what's going on. People will defend this movie by calling criticisms nitpicking but I really don't think they are. The plot holes are huge and obvious. You don't need to nitpick them, you can't miss them.
Having different writers and directors for the 3 movies is giving them a total lack of consistency in vision for the story.
Overall this trilogy feels like a cash in to sell books and eventually create a huge new extended universe just like the old cannon had.

The only two characters that were likeable at all was Rose Tico and Poe Dameron. There was a LOT of emphasis on Poe in this movie and they fleshed out his character - young, brash, always trying to be the hero and sometimes getting it but sometimes not. You get to see him in a *lot* of starfighting which makes for great action sequences.

Rose's character felt way more down to earth than Rey. Plucky engineer turned heroine.

Feels like this movie should've been about 30-45 minutes longer - the subplots really did not feel that well meshed together at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I can sum up my feelings about this movie as: entertained, but very disappointed. It is truly an entertaining spectacle: the visuals and the musical score are great. All fun and worth my money if this were a generic sci-fi flick. But this movie fails horribly as a Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi somehow pulls off an incredible feat by conflicting not only with the original 6 movies, but also The Force Awakens, which concludes 35 seconds before this movie begins. Having different writers undoing what the previous movies set up is not a formula for success. The Good: I was absolutely annoyed with Disney's decision to reboot Episode 4 and call it Episode 7. I give TLJ some credit for not being an obvious rip off of Episode 5, but they narrowly straddled that line. Some scenes are obviously lifted from ESB but in different order. Particularly the Speeder v AT-AT battle on the white, desolate planet to protect the shielded base. You know the one. Kylo Ren was very well written; as a matter of fact, he’s the only character they developed in this movie. I also felt like the music was kicked into high gear this time around. My only complaint was that it wasn't new music, just old scores we've heard before. The movie also had some interesting character designs, such as the new imperial guard with their lightsaber-resistant armor. The new First order ships were interesting and the hyperspace ramming scene was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen in Star Wars. But the integrity of the Star Wars universe can't be sacrificed for the sake of the spectacle and this movie is very, very guilty of this.

The Bad: there are many places where TLJ misses the mark, and sometimes undoes what was established in movies prior. Disney’s fingerprints are all over this because there were so many bad attempts at humor, even in serious scenes. I can’t believe there was a 'your mom' joke - prank call in Star Wars.. and it was right before a big space battle. Wow. Finn and Rose are completely useless and their subplot drags the movie on for an extra 45 minutes. Going back to the hyperspace ramming scene, it just completely changes the game for how Star Wars battles should take place. Star Destroyer-sized ships and above should be sitting ducks for hyperspace kamikaze. Even the Death Stars. As cool as it looked, I'd rather they'd never included it. The writers also took EXTREME liberties in their portrayal of Luke. The way he behaves in this movie, you'd think you were watching a deranged clone or homeless Mark Hamill. I don't love Episode 7, but it established the good and bad guys were looking for Luke because he's the key to saving the galaxy. The opening crawl says as much! But not only did Luke not want to be found (why was there a map??), he is depressed, jaded and overall isn't in character until Rey yells at him. I don't understand how Luke can redeem the most feared tyrant in the galaxy, Vader, but fantasizes about killing his own nephew in his sleep before he's ever done anything wrong. That completely erased the conclusion of Luke’s evolution from Eps 4-6. That's no Luke Skywalker. That is complete shenanigans. Worse so, hardly any of the questions left open from TFA are followed. Rian Johnson faked the audience out by waving off the mysteries (and plot holes) JJ Abrams created in TFA. But by doing so, he left a void of backstory surrounding nearly everything we've seen on screen since TFA. Very poorly done. Rey's mysterious parents and missing last name? None of it mattered -- she's simply Jedi Jesus for no reason. Snoke, the man who turned the galaxy upside down and corrupted Ben Solo? Dead within the first half of the movie. Just destroyed Death Star #3? Doesn't matter, there’s still an infinite First Order fleet and the Resistance is even weaker than before, somehow. In fact, they STILL haven't bothered explaining the Resistance/F.O. conflict at all. They eventually go back to saying "rebels" in this movie, so I really have no idea what's going on. How can I enjoy this trilogy if I can't follow along?

So all in all, The Last Jedi improves a bit on the originality side of things, but barely. It's ESB with the scenes moved around. I was certainly entertained. But the writers failed to fit this movie in with the greater Star Wars continuity. Narration was sacrificed for spectacle. Old characters and their relationships have been sacrificed to prop up new characters. Space battles from past movies have been completely rendered useless since we could have hyperspace rammed things this whole time. I just don't recognize this new brand of Star Wars. I think it is entirely meant for new fans only, because clearly no attention is being paid to the source material. I expect more writer shenanigans when the reins go back to JJ for episode 9, so more time will be spent answering/obfuscating things introduced in this movie instead of telling a NEW story. This may be where I finally get off the Disney Star Wars train.

Having a little humor is okay as we did from the start of this series, but the way it was done in this movie was so campy and inappropriate, almost like they hired Seth Rogen to write the comedic parts. Those parts might have been funny if you are eight years old. I'm not a big fan of Star Wars. None of the previous movies are great, but none of them are bad either. All are sometimes entertaining and beautiful but flawed and uneven.

The Last Jedi has more attempt at humour than previous entries, but the humour falls flat, it feels forced and jarring, and I didn't find myself laughing or even grinning. Those furry Porgs have nothing to do with the plot, rather they are there to be cute and funny and most likely are meant to sell plush toys. Visually they *are* well done as are other creatures, but those creatures are not in the background at the edges of the scene where they should be. Visuality has always been Star Wars' strong point; beautiful vistas and grand spaceships on fire, but here the island and the salt plain are the only visually striking settings, everything else is just a muddle of places that I just can't remember anymore.

Mark Hamill is great as Luke, but the rest of the cast can't really compare to the likes of Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, Liam Neeson or Evan McGregor.

This movie had a lot of really great pieces as well as some awkward ones. Overall, it just didn't quite come together to make the same quality movie as The Force Awakens and Rogue One.

POSITIVES

- Mark Hamill and Adam Driver absolutely killed it with their acting. They pretty much singlehandedly saved the movie from being a 4-5 for me.

- The plot is original. Those who complained that TFA was basically A New Hope should not be disappointed like that again.

- Cinematography and special effects were top notch. In particular, a certain space scene and a lightsaber fight were some highlights.

NEGATIVES

- There were certain things added that were clearly just meant to sell toys. They did nothing to advance the plot or develop characters (if you've seen the trailer, you'll know what I mean).

- Certain "main" characters were either: bland, served no purpose, and/or were shoehorned in.

- Despite an original plot, there were some crazy plot-holes and things that just didn't make sense.

- It was very jarring, tone-wise. Massive scenes of death and destruction were broken up by BB-8 doing goofy things and other characters giving Tony Stark-esque one-liners.

- Rian Johnson took JJ's foundation and just tossed it aside, for the most part. OVERALL

- This is a decent movie. Certainly worth going to see. Some of the acting and special effects were fantastic. The plot was fine for the most part. However, I'm more concerned going forward on how this film will affect the quality of the next film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, I'm going to try and be as level headed as possible when writing this review. I have this bad habit, when I see Star Wars movie in theaters I simply cannot look at the downsides, and Im always leaving thinking each movie was better than the last. However though I did enjoy this movie as a whole. There were some small issues, and big ones, such as the glaring and often quite annoying political correctness constantly shoved down the viewers throat. You can tell the difference between the George Lucas films, and the disney films. Not just in cgi, in this context its unimportant. The main thing being that forced political correctness is, well nonexistent in George's films. Now, I'm not praising the prequels here. However this cannot be ignored. Not ignoring the fact that the cast is mostly quite good, such as performances from Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver really standing out for better. Im not saying there is a problem with a diverse cast, in fact, it can make a movie better. However at times you can start to see the changes for worse. The cast in this movie is incredibly politically driven, all female characters have major roles in the plot. All major leaders in the resistance are female. Princess Leia, is no longer a princess but now a general. Along with Admiral Holdo also being a woman. Leaving only 3 main protagonists as men. Finn, Poe, and Luke. With countless antagonists being imperial whites. Who also happen to have clearly no idea what they are doing. Back to the female roles, Admiral Holdo's choices are, no matter what the lesson is trying to be, awful. Her choices where completely irrational and when the only person who attempts to make a difference is Poe. When he is literally and figuratively shot down by Leia and Admiral Holdo, they play it off as. Oh! He's just a rowdy boy, oh masculinity is so funny.

Ignoring the lesser important issue of forced political correctness. The plot itself, is, meh. To keep it simple 80% of the entire movie is rebel ships in space being picked off by the first order in a fight against time, so Finn, and newly introduced Rose have to find a codebreaker to hack first order technology that can track ships through lightspeed. A technology that has never appeared in a star wars movie. EVER! Meanwhile Luke and Rey are doing their own schenanigans on whatever planet The Force Awakens ended on. One key subplot regarding the Resistance, is the codebreaker thing I mentioned prior and the quest to get it turns into maybe one of the slowlest and most pointless feeling segments in Star Wars history. The entire sequence to get the codebreaker ends in Finn and Rose getting put in jail. Where they meet another code breaker, who, 30 minutes later, hands them to the first order. Whatever emotion that part was trying to convey, it only left me personally unsatisfied. Another issue, much shorter is my issue with the fate of Snoke. He just dies with no development. Creating a Return of the Jedi moment but instead of being the climax of the trilogy its only the middle act. So Snokes existence was entirely a placeholder for Kylo to just take over, moving on I guess....

In all the movie is riddled with seemingly useless plots, choices by the characters that are as stupid as a white girl in a horror movie, and politically forced agendas that can leave us with the fact that Star Wars will never be the same again.......

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After I watched Episode VII I left cinema very angry and I was not entertained. Watching Episode VIII I was entertained and I left cinema satisfied. Yet now thinking about it, it was not that good.
Positives:
Presence of space Battles
Story twists
Lot of action

Negatives:
Simply the story and setting of the movie is not epic enough. First Order is decently strong yet it's not epic enough. Only an average bad guys. Kylo Ren is interesting but he is also only average. He is like Sith Stormtrooper.
Leia flying
Luke Skywalker being stupid.
Snoke being stupid.

Hire somebody from Bioware to help create a decent Star Wars movie please. They created Star wars Knights of The Old Republic video game and that's best star wars story.

There are lots of flaws such as the story. It is probably worse then The Phantom Menace because lots of things don't make sense. Also (SPOILERS) villain dies to fast so that was a disappointment. That same scene is dedicated to ripping off the last Jedi. There is a lack of originality and I have seen star wars better then this. This movie does have really good effects though and it is fun to see. Then again the girl Rey is a bit of a Mary sue but hey gotta make it less confusing for the kids. I give it 5 out of 10 and I hope DISNEY learned their lesson and decides to make something good. I do fear for star wars. One more bad movie and they will stick to rouge one and han solo. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have very, very mixed feelings on TLJ. I'm just going to break it down into bullets:
Pros:
-Capable female protagonist*
-Diverse cast+
-Top-tier special effects
-Cool locations
-OK pacing
-Luke Skywalker nostalgia 4 evah
-I liked Admiral Holdo. Fight me.

Cons:
*Rey and Rose edge precariously close to Mary Sue territory. Rey being a complete Force-badass despite very little formal training (although I'm glad she's not descended from 'Force royalty' because it implies that the universe may be full of Force-sensitive people just waiting to discover their potential, a la the kid at the end). Rose was underdeveloped and her planting a kiss on Finn just felt...ugh.
+I love that *some* people are collectively loosing their she-it over the "PC" and "SWJ pandering" because the idea of black people and women in their precious space opera franchise ruins their childhood. However, sweet MRA tears are no excuse for bad writing and one-dimensional characters. Also, it would be nice if we can get away from the trope that all space villains must be space Nazis. It's such a low-hanging fruit at this point.
-TLJ is rife with plot holes large enough to fly an X-wing through. Not a Dreadnaught mind you, but still enough to give you a headache if you choose to pay attention. You'll be fine if you suspend your disbelief and lower your expectations a notch.
-The Canto Bight subplot could--should have been cut. Full stop.
-I felt kind of cheated at the end because none of the main characters (Poe, Finn, Rey, Leia, Kylo, or Chewbacca) died. Not because I'm a sadist who likes seeing people die, but it seemed like the ancillary characters (Rose's sister Paige, Admiral Akbar [RIP], Holdo, the poor schlubs in the escape craft) were the ones to suffer the consequences of Poe's insubordination, Leia's inability to communicate her and Holdo's escape plan, and Finn and Rose's misjudgment of DJ. Honestly, I kind of wish that Rose hadn't intercepted Finn's kamikaze moment with the laser cannon. This leads to my next gripe:
-If Finn had sacrificed himself and destroyed the cannon, it would have spared Luke from doing the whole "I'm a punchy hologram" thing. Don't get me wrong-- his moment with Leia was beautiful and the fight was badass, but him Force-projecting from across the galaxy was a real stretch. Now he's dead, Rey has no master to teach her (is it too much to ask for a main character to actually work for their skill?)
-Snoke. What was his deal? I guess we'll never know.
-Like it's been said by countless others-- why not lightspeed-jump-smash the Destroyer in the first place? Was that always an option?? Overall, the takeaway I got from this film is that Disney had decided that the Star Wars franchise is for the young, new consumers and not the diehard fans of the original movies. I think it's great that kids are getting a more inclusive story that they can grow attached to the way older generations have. I just hope that the complex themes are explored in a thoughtful way without oversimplifying them with a binary good-bad, light-dark, Jedi-Sith modality that is easier on the 'younger' demographics. After TLJ my expectations have been permanently lowered, and I'm not even mad. Disappointed, but not mad.

Literally the only good thing that could be said about this movie is the special effects. And effects are expected to be good in this day and age especially with the budget this movie had. I went into this film with low expectations after the dreary yet competently made Force Awakens and I was taken aback by the sheer hubris of this films writing and contrivance.

The Good: -Beautiful visuals and excellent sound design
-Some interesting ideas (explored poorly but still interesting)

The Bad:
-Complete disrespect of the original trilogy plot and characters
-An abundance of plot holes. I am an avid film lover and I struggle to think of a film with more baffling or questionnable writing than TLJ
-Not one likeable character
-'SuBvErTiNg ExPeCtAtIoNs'
-Forced 'humour'

An utter waste of an amazing universe and characters by a studio that didn't even attempt to analyse or understand the franchise. Stick to George Lucas' 6 film saga. Maybe even throw Rogue One in there for a little flavour. Overall, skip this cinematic and narrative trainwreck.

The force awakens had some issues, but it left good foundations on which to build a good story and good characters. But instead it decide to make Ray void of a personality and desecrate Luke Skywalker, a beloved iconic character right at the heart of Star Wars. The absolute disrespect with which they treated Luke and the franchise is disgusting and spits in the face of every fan. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ryan Johnson no tiene ni la más mínima idea de lo que significa Luke Skywalker en la historia y le da el tratamiento de un personaje secundario prescindible. Historia sin sentido y que falta el respeto a personales históricos como el general Ackbar. Pésima. Expand

Horrible writing, cannon breaking powers, characters completely different from the OT. the movie is a mess from the beginning to the end, only to end with nothing done actually making any difference. The Mary Sue of the galaxy is back, now with even worst acting and ever MORE powerful! The 3 goes to visuals, Mark Hamill and admiral Ackbar. Expand

Not good. Started to fall asleep. The story is not inspiring. Luke's character no longer exists. He is Luke in name only. Misses the heart and soul of what makes Star Wars great.

The breath of fresh air in the SW saga that this series needed. Kylo Ren and Rey's relationship, Luke's character, the visuals were great!

I'll defend this movie until the day I die, Amazing star wars. By far the most visually striking star wars movie and arguably the most competently acted, Rian Johnson knows star wars and I can't wait until his trilogy kicks off soon. kindaI'll defend this movie until the day I die, Amazing star wars. He was this optimistic young Jedi, but then they do that to him. I like how Rey can do all this **** without even training for a moment. The argument of "she is a palatine" has no ground because that's not how it works. That's like saying "im louis Gehrig's son" and now that means i will go to the Big leagues and win the World series 60 **** times. I don't even wanna talk about Rose honestly. I have many more reason's but honestly I've had to make this argument a million times. Expand
