This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie really needed someone to look it over and say "does this make any sense" or "why are we doing this?". Where to begin.

The"chase scene" in space doesn't make any sense. Tie fighters don't have a "limited" range. They just can't jump in to hyperspace. A transport can not do that much damage to a capital ship that big.

To much plot holes, I'm already tired of writing.

As a film onAs a sci-fi film, I thought The Last Jedi was a decent film with quite good imagery. Some scenes, like the scene with the cruiser blowing through the First Order's central ship, were actually really well executed and creative. As a film on its own, it definitely stands its significant ground, and show how much effort Disney has put into the franchise.
However, this movie is a sequel to The Force Awakens, and is an entry into the Star Wars series as a whole. And, on that ground, it concerns me how little care was given into recreating the atmosphere and style which made Star Wars what it is. The Last Jedi, above all else, feels like a Disney movie throughout its run time, which doesn't bode well for what should be a trilogy first and foremost. The aesthetic of a dirty, worn universe is gone, replaced by a more glossy and traditional Disney part-cyberpunk world likely because it's cheaper to shoot and animate for. This is a shame, considering that was one of the things J.J. did best in the previous film. Alien characters, too, have taken a cutback, a hallmark of Star Wars films. Interactions are kept to a bare minimum, with no subtitled scenes or, really, talking aliens whatsoever. Those that are there are mainly for comic relief, something the film has inherited an overabundance of from Marvel. (Yes, Star Wars has included humor in the past. But this feels different, and its comedy has that off-beat time which screams Disney over Lucasfilm.) The music is almost unrecognizable, with few notable themes throughout and low usage of the pre-existing score. Classic cast members were limited to only seconds of screentime, and what they have is painfully underutilized. This is a worse wound with the real-life death of Carrie Fisher, which means we have none of the classic cast able to fill living roles. Luke shouldn't have died in this film, especially since it could easily have been edited around. The plot, as a whole, is weak. The Force Awakens, with its sensation of buildup to this film, is virtually irrelevant. All of the plot points set up in the previous film are ignored, a common trait with this film. Much of the established canon is disregarded as unimportant, even with what was stated in the films themselves. Much of the dialogue is poor, too, making me think this is a script problem and not a direction issue. (I would follow by saying this is not Rian Johnson's fault, but iMDb states he wrote this film as well.) The story seems more obsessed with OCs and reinventing the wheel than it does following the traditions of the franchise, and that saddens me immensely. You can tell George Lucas was not consulted, and the plot suffers as a result.
All that being said, I didn't hate the film. Again, a lot of the space CG was effective, and I am thankful to say the Porgs are not nearly as prominent as the trailer makes them seem. Kylo Ren's character was much better developed in this film than it was in TFA, leading to his performance with Daisy Ridley working quite decently. But I don't feel this makes up for a narrative weak film with such a low respect for its original material.

The mystery and grandeur is gone: the force feels like parlor tricks, the characters are like people you know. This is not Star Wars.

It does some of the 'small story' well: portraying realistic characters and their motivations, and some accurate 'petty politics' (that don't add any real interest).

The writing is curiously unpredictable: with the usual Hollywood trash you know exactly what is going to happen, but this is unfamiliar trash (it reminds me of some Netflix stuff). So a point or so for that.

I actually like Rey and Kylo Ren, but everything else is bad.

And the rebellion is too England accent heavy.

I wonder what Star Wars episode 50 will be like... Disney paid $4 billion for Star Wars... Star Wars will be going forever like Batman, etc. lol

At the same time I would rather have more Star Wars than have it die with Lucas at the first 6. Maybe they'll get better at this eventually and we'll have a few gems a la 'The Dark Knight'.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this movie but unfortunately it is too uneven to give a glowing review. Visually it is magnificent and the audio is excellent as well. The acting is good but very little time is spent developing the new characters. We never find out why the events of The Force Awakens happened and multiple scenes are ripped off from past Star Wars films. The action is great but I was left with more questions than answers. Luke is completely wasted in this film and should never act this way. Expand

Cons: Complete lack of logic from the character choices to the physics in the universe, terrible character arcs, it undoes 99% of the setup of The Force Awakens and does not setup any future films, poor plot premises, disrespectful to the original trilogy characters, unnecessary long film with unnecessary scenes included.

The humour is out of place for a star wars movie, it's too kid friendly as it doesn't take itself serious (not like the originals which were never PG18 but you felt the stakes), the characters are mostly not fleshed out and/or likeable, the dialogues are bland and the story uninspiring. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I’ve been a star wars fan (not hardcore but I really enjoyed all the movies since I watched the return of the Jedi when I was six); this movie is just bad, the there’s a lot of characters that are just out of order (pun intended) the Asian girl, just why? To make Rey jealous and turn her in to the dark side in IX? Because of Finn? And then turn Ben to the light side? With the assistance of Ghostly Luke? The purplish woman that light speed the ships like it was a bullet (that epic ending would have been perfect for Leia/Akbar) and then some more, paraphrasing a friend of mine:
The thing went like this: (in the mind of the director/scriptwriters): let’s explain who the knights of Ren are... Nah, no one cares... Let’s explain who Snoke is... Nah, who cares? Let’s kill him the stupidest way possible! , Rey parents, lets reveal who they are, Nah, they are piece of **** drunks that sold her... OK! Let’s show Luke as the great master Jedi he is... Nah, he’s an old piece of **** coward that in all the movie does not clash a damn light saber against anybody, because, the fans did no wait decades to see that, no, one that projects himself far away and then dies from exhaustion??? WTF, Let’s give an epic ending to Leia, in memory of C.F. Nah, make her flight and develop super powers from the thin air (well in space there is no air so, from thin nothingness) and make her fly like superman just because…, let’s make Chewie throw away perfectly fine food, to what end? It was already cooked! I mean, it’s a message you want to give anyone? Don’t eat animals? Chewie, go vegan!, then in the middle of the movie, let’s make a remembrance to the cantina-ish, but let’s give it a casino royale vibe and throw a high grade actor in the mix that will give a speech about how bad wars are… what a disgraceful way to treat Benicio del Toro… and let’s not forget: the comic relief, I can’t be sure, but I don’t know if there more than 3-4 on the old movies, there’s one every 3-5 minutes in this one, WHY? It’s not a comedy… I could go on and on, I did not like at all what they did with the movie and I dread where is heading, I used to love star wars, I still do, but not this Disney crap we are getting.

Throwing in 3 random, and I mean RANDOM, side characters to keep the story moving. Disney "comedy" thrown in EVERY 10 minutes. The weakest "evil master" in Star Wars history. All the negative press Star Wars fans were worried about after Disney took over, came true in this movie. I left SO sad and disappointed...Horrible story. Horrible new characters. Big plot holes. Worst ending of all time. And, Princess Leia now flies through space like Super Girl. Expand

This is coming from an avid Star Wars fan.
I didn't expect a brilliant movie, I expected them to deepen the plot and the characters introduced in Force Awakens. All of them had potential.
Yet it was all turned in favor of doing a Marvel movie in the Star Wars universe. A good laugh here and there is okay, but this movie puts too much emphasis on bringing up laughs.

I loved some of the lines from Luke. The were the sound of the fans - the past Jedis did lots of things wrong and that's what finally broke him. Yet he was out of character at least two or three times.

Poe was a puppy held in a cage. Lots of noise and movement, but in the end - none of effect. Finn could be completely cut out of the movie and it wouldn't change a thing.

Leia had her scenes and one in particular should've been her last. That would be so much more both for her and Kylo. Yet they went with Superman style. Foolish.

Hux is a joke in this movie and I reckon that's on purpose.

While this one was not able to deliver the same thing that "Empire strikes back" did, it copied some of it, while also borrowing from "Return of the Jedi", yet lacking it's depth.

Kylo Ren is not and will never be the next Vader. Adam Driver tries hard, but all that is being written for his character makes it impossible.

Snoke was put to waste in the movie.

The FO and Resistance chase was absurd, and I mean absurd while looking at all SW movies and the final fight was just so plain and simple, it irritated me.

I feel a bit broken by this movie, as I see where Disney wants to go with it. "Kill the past", as Kylo states it, is Disney's plan. Cut the ties with the previous installments. That is "a" strategy.

I find it a broken one, as it could've built a new cult based on the old movies, sparkled with a fresh look, yet it killed both.

To sum up, two quotes:
- Mark Hamill on his role in TLD: "When I read 8, I told Rian [Johnson, the writer-director], 'I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you've decided about my character'," Hamill said during an ABC interview.
- "This is not going to go the way you think." I concur. Sadly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the code master plot more than a lot of people, I love Rey's origin but maybe not how it was showed. I don't mind snoke's background and general's space drifting, I like how luke and Ben's relationship was like.

I feel as individual points, I enjoyed those more than people loved this movie.

I can't get over the ridiculous space chasing and unearned resolution, which is most of this movie. The tension should not be existing. No matter how awesome the light speed suicide run looks (it is one of the greatest thing I ever see and I can't deny it was a fantasy in my head). It breaks my immersion of all the space battles in star wars.

The core audience for this franchise skews older. Disney wants to make money going forward, and that means changing the skew of the core demo. And that's all this movie is -- trying to skew the movie to a younger audience. As a business decision, it's probably the correct one.

Sadly, they created a mediocre movie. Visually, this film is stunning. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are both extremely talented actors. They both put in great performances. But the massive plot holes, the terrible narrative choices, and the criminal wastes of the audience's time conspire to make the film, as a whole, simply...meh.

Star Wars movies have always been about black and white morality tales. Sometimes you get a gray-ish character in there for flavor. This attempt to create Breaking Bad in space undermines that history. And it commits some fundamental narrative sins: don't set the audience up for a big reveal, then not give it to them. Poor storytelling and poor writing.

Rian Johnson told us we wouldn't like his movie, in not so many words. We should take him at his word.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm ok with Luke gone. Let's be fair, it has to happen at some point for the new stories to begin. The problem is the movie has many flaws. The main story really is not well built especially at the end. You want Luke to pass on the Jedi spirit to Rey? OK! Fine. They need to be the main characters that click at the end. But obviously this is not the case. Luke swings his sword for 30 seconds and Rey lifts rocks for 10 seconds and that's it. It is nice to have supporting characters but they can't mess up the major story line. Also, the story line of Fin and Rose doesn't really make much sense and it is totally unnecessary, especially for the part where they went to look for the code guy. Expand

It feels like someone made a movie to make fun of SW and its fans. The movie was trash... there was nothing happening that advanced the story or characters. They killed off Luke, and almost all of the resistance, and that is it. Finn became an annoying, obsolete character. Rose was introduced and she was also annoying and unlikable - no offense to the actress though. Anyone with common sense should know that the actress had little to do with what kind of character Rose was, and I do not blame her in the slightest.
Rey was OP. Cool. Sigh... I think Rian Johnson was a terrible choice for this movie. I don't know who in good conscience said it was a good idea to have a trilogy directed by different people with no already planned out story? Like wtf, seriously. Disney, you messed up big time.
This cannot be undone, but Rise of Skywalker and even The Force Awakens were much better movies than The Last Jedi, and had all three of them been directed by the same person, with an overarching vision for where the story and characters would go, we Star Wars fans might have gotten a decent trilogy.
I don't wanna blame RJ for this mess, but he did kind of **** on a lot of beloved characters and lore, and so yeah, he did a terrible job at Star Wars. Barely anything makes sense if you think about it. RJ didn't think anything through... it's a shame.

Why was Finn discarded to the sidelines, because the director didn't like him I guess. The movie makes no sense unless you take into account that the director wanted to deconstruct and take a dump on Star Wars. Terrible movie. Expand

- beautiful cinematography
- iconic lightsaber duels
- the new adorable creatures

Cons:
- takes the Sequel Trilogy story somewhere else
- lack of common sense when it comes to First Order and Resistance Space Chases
- Canto Bight subplot is some of the worst Star Wars
- Rey is still overpowered and hasn't gotten a nerf yet
- Admiral Ackbar is killed off in the worst way possible
- General Holdo is my least favorite character in the movie saga
- the timing for the jokes needs work
- Star Wars: Infinite Warfare ?
- The Villains Turned Out to be Nothing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Late review. I watched this movie in theatre back in 2017. I had so much hope that I did a ‘no spoil’ policy for two years since VII. In the theatre, the humoristic tone fell off, and then when Luke threw away the light saber of his father, I felt betrayed as a fan of VII and as a fan of the entiee saga. Disney doesn’t respect beloved characters, they kill them or change them to be replaced by new forgettable characters that no one can identify with because they don’t struggle. I watched the movie several times since then. And the movie is a piece of trash except for its visual. I consider today this entire trilogy to be non cannon. Disney betrayed the fans and destroyed a legacy. I stick to Ep 1-6 and Clone Wars. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was the biggest let down of the century. It completely derails the plot lines built in episode 7 and spends literal hours telling a story about Finn and Poe that don't matter. I don't understand it. They make Poe look like an absolute buffoon just to make some pink-haired lady look like some kind of tactical genius and huge martyr. Meanwhile, Finn is running around on a casino planet riding giraffes doing things that have zero impact on the plot. I'm not even joking. It is like whoever wrote this movie does not care about the characters or their development. Don't even get me started on what they do to Luke Skywalker. If you are a fan of the original trilogy, it is best to avoid these movies to keep the mystique and fun of the originals intact. Expand

Plot armor keeps driving the whole story. It's like completely random things happening in succession and no one cared about making the motivations of the characters visible to the viewer. In addition, dialogues are significantly weaker than in the first part. In some very important scenes, the dialogues are completely superficial and general. You could confuse them with children talking. A lot of fancy things had to happen in this movie and no one cared about telling why. In the first part, this was ok because it fitted into an overall mystery. But if there is a mystery, you have to progress it and not put it into a mixer and scramble it to an unrecognizable word sausage. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a really disappointing movie, with some exceptions. The visuals are stunning, the best in the series, with some amazing scenes. However, the central storyline is flawed and unengaging, and there are many extraneous, thinly-written characters, overly trite sentiment, and tedious McGuffins galore. The Leia Force powers scene is atrocious, and the film struggles to recover from that point. A real missed opportunity. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of visual and production effort utterly wasted on a story that isn't just poor, but actively stamps on the original movies. So I've been thinking. What was the point of this movie? Other then stomping over the mystery boxes of JJ Abrams. I mean they spent 4 billion dollars on just buying Star Wars, let alone all the other costs. How the **** does Disney not have a ****ing plan? This is supposed to be three movies to cover a story. I expected, the TLJ to expand on characters and explain events in a cohesive narrative that sets up the next instalment. But instead it explains nothing and doesn't advance the "plot" at all, just meanders around for 2 and half hours.

So let's look at the character arcs.

Finn. When I mentioned in my first post How I don't hate any of the characters, other then Rose and Luke, just pity them, Finn was chief in my mind. But of course it wasn't just this movie. Across two movies he has been criminally mishandled. So the core concept is great. Brainwashed Enemy Soldier that switches sides and fights for the good guys. But they immediately just trash it. I think one of my core reasons why I hated Rey so much more in Force Awakens that this, is because she and Finn were seperated. They seem to bring out the worst in each other. Finn acts like a cowardly moronic comic relief character while Rey is a turbo **** to him.

Finn Is Better in Last Jedi. But he clearly had nothing to do, so they give him a completely useless sub plot that is hamfisted and gets more rebels killed. And a tacked on romance, that I felt zero chemistry from. One that ends up throwing him literally off course from saving the rebels, to be smashed into the ground to be told done trite **** by Rose. **** Rose.

So what was the point? He had no character growth. Getting a girlfriend isn't character growth. Having another rematch with useless Chrome Lady Stormtrooper isn't character growth.

Poe. So he had a character arc. Too bad it was a ****ing stupid one. What is his lesson? Don't worry if your commander sounds like a moron in a evening dress who has no idea what they are doing and is just bleating trite nothing ****. No just obey orders and go like a sheep to the slaughter. Or that the rebellion is so ****ed that trading a collection of the worst bombers ever and a few star fighters for a massive ship is bad.

Poe seems to be largely rooted in having nothing much to do with him. Hell I'm not even sure if he was supposed to survive the Force Awakens. It felt like he died, and then was written back in at a later point because we need a cocky rogue.

The Mutiny is pointless ****, that could have been solved by anybody ****ing communicating. Hell the movie seems to love abusing him. Leia slapping him. Getting mocked for being demoted just for asking if they had a ****ing plan. Then Leia ****ing stuns him for a laugh from the audience. Why? He clearly idolises her. She could have just said "hey I have a plan, stop your mutiny".

Of course the movie also contained a perfectly arc that they squandered. Simple. Have Leia die. Boom. The hot headed flyboy, used to commanding a small squad in battle is now left in command of the rebellion in retreat. Every instinct screams turn and fight. But he can't. He struggles to command. Everything seems doomed. And then Leia appears as a force ghost to give a small Obi Wan in the trench style, advice in time for him to pull a way out.

Now Rey. The Mary Sue stuff is still there, but she and the writers are being less ****y about it. But she doesn't have a arc. She has parental angst in a mystery box, and then lol nobody drunks . Which isn't a bad idea in its lonesome ( but does ruin her defenders 'Muh secret force training' defense). But it isn't a arc in itself. Then she has weird connection with Kylo and force. But what. We are told she is tempted. Not shown it. She doesn't give in and do anything bad. She doesn't really do anything. She was just a pawn between Snoke and Kylo. Snoke thinks he is using her, but actually she was being used by Kylo to slay Snoke and kill his guards.

Kylo. He started the movie conflicted, freshly humiliated and why he was dabbling in the dark side unanswered. And he ends the movie conflicted, freshly humiliated, why he was dabbling in the dark side unaswered and in command. That isn't a character arc. He isn't going good. He isn't getting worse, as he couldn't take out Leia. He isn't less conflicted. Maybe he is a bit more conflicted.

The main hint of a arc is taking his Vader hero worship with the helmet, and smashing it to bits. But that was one scene, and It felt more winking at the audience then coherent plotting. Hey look this guy is still crazy and out of control. Lol.

But where are they supposed to take him? Redeem him? Kill him?

Hell What does he want? Why is he a Space school shooter? What is he even going to do with the first order's fleet?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just feel... Empty. Basically, nothing of any consequence happened, whatsoever. Every major major plot thread was tossed out, and while I appreciate the attempt to bring something new to the table, I think it failed badly. Rey was boring and predictable, and the interesting possibility of her going to the dark side or going more grey was a completely blatant red herring. There were multiple character death fake outs, which simply existed to create cheap twists. Character motivations were vague at best, and non-existent at worst. There were tons of things going on, which mostly existed to pad runtime and make you feel like there was actually some sort of progress. The porgs literally served no movie purpose whatsoever, and weren't even introduced in any meaningful way. They just existed to sell plush toys for Disney. The only redeeming factors were Kylo Ren being an intense, layered, complex character, and Luke being equally well written. Additionally there was THAT great scene with Kylo and Rey. Those are the only things to redeem this movie for me. Expand

Many of the narrative decisions here were refreshing too, from plans failing to materialize, chasitizing of reckless bravura in favor of feminine wisdom, lamentations on the ambiguity of good and evil, reluctant father figures, and some surprising tension/tenderness between Kylo and Rey. Still, the movie is genuinely bad through most of its overlong (by a few parsecs) running time. It's a tonal mess and the reliance on humor ends up more like a crutch. It's also just a shame they couldn't have tried to make something good with the material instead. In it's current form, Its really taking a lot of mental gymnastics and Orwellian double think to contort my brain sufficiently and appreciate the absurdity on display in this new Disney trilogy. Unfortunately I didn't get the same reaction when watching the latest installment, here's my reasons:

Firstly the film's runtime is way too long, I'm not saying long films are bad, but when you start to feel like it's going on for too long that's when it becomes an issue, I had this feeling about an hour into it and I felt it could have been shortened.

The film tugs on a lot of branches and tries to explores each of them equally, unlike the Force Awakens you get the story development of Rey and Finn as they get introduced to the world and you follow their story and development, in The Last Jedi you don't really get that.

"Forced comedy" was cringe, I feel like they've seen the success of Thor Ragnarok and some other Marvel titles and decided to add some jokey fun here, this is not what Star Wars is about and to me this just didn't work. I wanted to see more development between Rey, Finn and Ren, you got some of that in this story and admittedly these were the only sequences I enjoyed but the film wasn't really about them, or rather their stories felt less significant, in a lot of ways it was more about the Rebellion as an organisation. I don't understand why the critics say this was the best Star Wars ever... I thought it was okay.. but I preferred Force Awakens to this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its not the direction I would have chosen for star wars, but its okish. There are enough things that I cannot get past to give it a good rating, lore wise. First of all, Leia should be dead, I call absolute bs on the force pull. Second, I disagree with the force link thing, I am sorry but it was never like that in the rest of the canon, once again bs. Snoke served no purpose, he claims the force link but as a master manipulator myself, he didn't do jack, it happened naturally, he just tried to take credit for it. And the biggest issue... LUKES LIGHTSABER IN HIS PROJECTION SHOULD BE GREEN!!!! Yeah, its blue. Rey finds Anakins saber in episode 7, and Anakins saber is destroyed after the battle with snoke. Lukes saber, in his projection, should be GREEN!!! GET IT RIGHT DISNEY!!!! Expand

I was disappointed with this movie. I had shunted a lot of my problems from the Force Awakens on to this film to fix and if anything TLJ made it worse and now left Episode 9 with a herculean task.

This movie seemed more concerned with subverting expectations and tropes than telling a cohesive story. Was it enjoyable to watch, yes. Much in the same way a Marvel movie is fun to watch. But I don't think I will rewatch this move for years to come like I have for the other Star Wars movies. I think that casual fans of Star Wars will be fine with this movie and I don't mean to sound snooty or elitist. Most of this movie's flaws fall into fridge logic. And most people don't waste time in their life sitting around thinking about it. So yeah take your kids, go see it at least once. I'm likely going to see it one more time at least so Disney already won in that regard, the people who will be most upset will be obligated to see this movie at least one or two times.

It felt more like an episode in a 20 episode TV-series. The reason why is because it did not take the story forward in any important way. And a lot of the things that happened in the movie felt unnecessary and there for temporary entertainment instead of making a good narrative and getting you attached to the characters.

This movie might be enjoyable for those who just want to see some good action and nice environment. But those who are interested in seeing this movie as a part of a trilogy with great narrative and character progression will be left disappointed.

Honestly if Star Wars started with Episode VII and onwards it wouldn't have been that bad...but this movie throws out everything in the past as far as logic and lore....

They just massacre Luke´s character, couldn't relate him to the first trilogy. Introduced their social agenda that even if agree with it has no place in the movie. I could go on writing how of a disappointment this movie is for most star wars fans. The only thing i can give this movie is that it has some amazing visual moments. Expand

The story felt disjointed from start to finish and worst of all, the story had no heart. I actually enjoyed The Force Awakens and entered the theater tonight with great promise. I left very disappointed yet hopeful Abrams can put this mess back together in the finale. 5/10, to be honest, is being generous. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are so many awful things in just film I can't wrap my head around it:
- the humour got a chuckle here and there but it was seriously Prequels level **** It will not age well.
- Poe was done so dirty with that plot line- he's been shown to be a competent leader; him not understanding the strategy makes no sense when you consider his years of service. Also his "she's not what I expected"- he **** serves under Princess Leia, Poe knows powerful women, don't project your misogyny onto good characters, Rian.
- Finn. Jesus, he was shafted so goddamn hard. His and Rose's plot line did absolutely nothing to drive the plot anywhere- such a waste of time. There was so much potential to explore about Finn and they chose to do nothing with him. - I will never forgive Rian for the rest of my life for making me watch Luke Skywalker stare dead eyed in the face at Rey as he drinks green sea cow **** juice.
- Luke has some okay scenes and the Crait scene was epic, and I cried at Luke and Leia's reunion. But I **** hated the way they explained away the fallout with Luke/Kylo. If Luke felt a moment of hatred flow through him, fine, that somewhat makes sense for him. However, the narrative doesn't frame it like that; rather it's done to shown Kylo as being sympathetic and rationalizing his attack. I don't think I'm explaining this right, but Luke's actions serve Kylo's character more than they serve Luke, and that really bothered me. Luke deserved more than that.
-Rey. Goddamn they **** Rey so badly in this film it honestly makes me so sad. She's the first female jedi protagonist and a plot that was supposed to be her finding her balance and place in the force became this redemption mission for a man she spoke to 3 times. What was supposed to be HER conflict with light and dark became Kylo's; she was just roped into his conflict without being given one of her own.
God they just let down Rey so hard in this, but they did that to a lot of characters.
-as a lifelong Star Wars fan, the "resolution" of killing
Snoke was the biggest **** YOU to fans who spent years waiting for an expansion of SW lore. Who is he? Where is he from? How is he connected? Now it's nothing. And this leads me to wonder: of Kylo is the driving force for all of the darkness in the galaxy, how is redemption? How
Is it even possible? The Emperor worked because he was this pillar that had to be toppled in the OT. Now it's Kylo? I personally think this movie showed Kylo to be too far gone and irredeemable, but I feel like they're still trying to make him sympathetic. I'm just so lost as to where the conflict is and who the villain is.
But yeah I felt like all of the harder potential from the first was lost in space with this one. Biggest disappointment of the year.

Episode VIII, on the other hand, just left me bored and frustrated. It had totally useless scenes, nonexistent character development, and a predictable story arc that adds nothing to Episode VII and in fact, leaves you wondering: "Just...why?" The acting and handful of memorable moments scattered in this film save the day, but I have the feeling that 'The Last Jedi' has Rian Johnson following down the path of the George Lucas prequels. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. STAR WARS FANS ARE TEARING THIS FILM APART. And rightly so.

The Last Jedi was a fun movie. It had everything you'd want to see in a blockbuster: goal-driven characters, a great musical score, and explosive action. And yes, BB-9e and the Porgs were clearly made for merchandise, but so were the Ewoks so it's not like Lucasfilm hasn't milked the cash cow before. But I left the theater discontent. Here's why:

The Last Jedi did not add much depth to the Force Awakens. In the end of TFA, there's a real gray area in Kylo's future. I got the feeling there was still light in young Ben. By the end of TLJ, it's completely snuffed out. He's not a complex character anymore. He's just a very one-dimensional baddie. Even his mom knows he's a goner. There's a real problem with this conclusion, however. The whole movie hints at hope in Kylo. Rey senses it. After Luke was honest with Rey, the audience can tell that there's a misunderstanding between master and apprentice. An internal conflict still exists within him. That is, until his betrayal to Snoke. Then, Kylo transforms into the blandest character ever. Quite comparable to Steppenwolf from the DCEU's failed team-up movie. I wanted so badly to invest in the villain, but I couldn't after Luke's lightsaber was torn apart.

And then there's Snoke. I understand maybe Rian Johnson didn't think he was very important to the plot, but his quick exit was a bad idea. There was so much potential with his character, but nope. All wasted. It just sucks to wait a whole year for the build up just to see him go so soon. I do admit, the way he died was pretty cool, but at least give him a backstory. Star Wars fans go crazy after that. And after the countless Snoke theories that accumulated over the past couple years, I can't imagine how the writers of this film got together and said, "Do you know what would be cool? If Snoke just died without a backstory. I'm sure fans would eat that **** up." Well guess what, we didn't.

So Mark Hamill didn't like Johnson's direction on Luke Skywalker. I HATED WHAT JOHNSON DID TO LUKE. First of all, his disbelief that Ben Solo couldn't be saved from the dark side? Darth Vader admitted himself that Luke was the one who turned him good again. So why couldn't he have talked with his nephew and had a flat out family discussion with him. Yeah, he may have been impulsive in the original trilogy, but you'd think Luke would have learned by now what his being like 60 years old and all. Second, Luke as a hermit... doesn't really fit his character. The prequel trilogy lay the grounds for why Yoda could make a good hermit. He's hella wise. Luke, on the other hand, has always been a fighter. He did not of that in this film. And if you say I'm wrong because of the scene with Kylo, he just dodged Kylo's lightsaber a couple times. And then he dies, no wait. That's just hologram Luke. No wait. He's dead. GG Luke, you thought too hard you had a brain aneurysm. If you thought Snoke's potential was wasted, Luke had like 10x the potential, and it was also wasted. TLJ did nothing to further the elements of TFA. There was nothing riveting in the story, nothing new that we didn't already know, just a jumbled up mess. There were things I enjoyed. I liked Rose. I thought she was a great character who really stood by her morals. I gotta say, I'm Asian American and I did appreciate the fact that Star Wars has become more and more diversified. If any fans complain against diversity in Star Wars they are just racist. So, good on Lucasfilm and Disney for that I guess. And great job by Kelly Marie Tran. Benicio del Toro is in this film, which is a plus...

If this was a standalone film, I might have given it a higher score. But this is Star Wars. And it did not feel like a Star Wars film.

Captain Phasma was also wasted. You know what, Johnson took like the three most visually compelling characters in this film and killed them off... I'm actually pissed thinking about it right now. Good luck JJ Abrams. You're going to need it.
