A much farther attempt than Force Awakens attempted to conjure. Rian johnson does spend too much time with the resistance, and makes it a very throttled, back-n-forth film that never really allows you to connect or hone in to something particular. It wants to do so much. And to its quality, has great effect. But the storytelling became a bit of a juggle-act. On a space odyssey level, it delivers. But as a story following up a very teasing, simple first instalment, Last Jedi does too much and leaves little to look forward to. My complaints are simple, the storytelling wasn't honed in. Instead of making us feel through the trauma, tension of what was going on. Things just happened for thunderous cinematic effect, which they do. But as a whole, you walk away from Last Jedi more throttled than engrossed. And wishing it conveyed its ideas better, in a more honed-in way. As epic as it comes off, was it necessary? While we're left with shame and consequence. Expand

It was worth all the hype it deserves which makes it another one of the best of this year and the only movie with such a score automatically makes this one of the best films of this year in my opinion. What makes this film truly deserves the score are the surprises it gives us. Like literally, they are completely unexpected and aren't forced onto the film unlike every other film that were released this year I see as a joke. To tell what it attempts to do is completely difficult to say in a couple of words because they keep changing as the film progresses to its end and I got to say, it was worth waiting for another great film of this year. Check. Terrible characters? Double check. The Last Jedi is the worst Star Wars movie I have ever seen and it is so bad that it makes The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones seem like good movies. Continuing the traditional from The Force Awakens of killing off beloved OG characters, The Last Jedi kills Luke Skywalker at the end in one of the worst send-offs to a beloved character I have ever seen. It was almost if Rian Johnson and his crew, never watched any of the previous movies and they had no idea what they were doing with the characters.

If you are a Star Wars fan, avoid this one, but if you are woke, this will be right up your alley.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Movie that subverts your expectations in all the wrong ways, only to have all it's subversions retconned in the Rise of Skywalker. A truly awful middle film for any trilogy gives the final chapter nowhere to go except the drawing board and ends up giving audiences an overall unsatisfactory experience.

Very poor lightsaber choreography where no 2 sabers even clash in the entire movie as one of its many subversions coupled with 2 of the worst ever filmed space battles in all of cinema that insult the intelligence of the audience and climaxes with a universe breaking maneuver. This film and the entire sequel trilogy needs to be retconned in order to move the franchise forward.

The Disneyfication of the franchise has taken away so much of what made it special in the first place. And dare I say it, but imho TLJ is now the worst SW flim of all time. Even below ep 1,2,3.

Characters with no depth
A Director with no knowledge of the franchise.
A forgettable, nearly laughable villian in Kylo Ren
The Disneyfication of the First Order.
A plethora of really really bad young actors overacting to a huge degree. I'm looking at you Rey/Finn/Poe. The three of you might be fine in the three stooges but in SWs......
And the **** is Rose doing? The lame gags and infantile humour might belong in a kids version of SW or the cartoons, but it has no place here.

I just get the feeling Disney went with a bunch of young bad actors so that they could keep the fees low and squeeze the Franchise for all it's worth since the kids will be around longer and can be spun off into more side stories.

TLJ felt less like a Star Wars Episode and more like a marketing movie for Star Wars written by big data analytics to pander to as many market segments as possible without actually delivering anything of substance.

Well done Disney. I must say that you have hit a brand new depth of low when you make me pine for George Lucas and I hated episode 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is like a kombucha. It has a sharp taste in there somewhere, but it's still good, and very healthy. Acting is great. People complain about Rose, but I think she's a really good character. Her and Finn's side story could have been better, though. It could have been tweaked to have a bit more impact, as well as the fact that nothing really comes of it in the end. I mean, I guess Phasma dies... but really there isn't much outcome to that plotline. The rest of the movie is fantastic, though. The film subverts expectations in a careful way, being radically different to what we know, but in a way that, in my opinion, still feels incredibly respectful of what came before. (not like Rise of Skywalker's random shamble of ideas coalesced into a confusing mess of spectacle that retcons the plot of half the previous movies.) With fantastically written characters (Luke especially, fight me) and a phenomenal final act, it's a movie that, while I couldn't call it a masterpiece, is great. There is a strange feeling throughout, though, of a weird unenjoyable-ness relative to the movie's quality. Overall, great movie.

There are all sorts of cool battles and lasers going TCHEW! TCHEW! TCHEW! right by your ear. The diversity of the cast was welcome but there weren't enough aliens on the rebel side I thought. Or are there ever aliens on the dark side? I do not know. Seems like mostly humans. I think the people getting upset by this film are those who don't really understand the universe and maybe they just can't be pleased no matter what. I loved it and I will see it at least one more time in the theater possibly while wearing an oversized velvet sombrero (haven't decided on the color yet). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abandoning the script arc in the middle of a trilogy isn't a good idea and this is a case and point example of why. Characters fall flat and fail to develop, shock value childish writing is forcefully substituted for actual professional and constructive writing, and Rian Johnson's ego ego was fed by a bunch of more money hungry pleebs who don't know how to tell a story, only hoe to listen to one at an eyes wide shut party. When the full scope of the movie, and it's tone (oh gawd halp ma) depict every single character in the opposite light that they were portrayed in previously in the mediocre but passable "The Forcr Awakens." So for those of you who have never written scripts for films over a saga, or TV shows over a series arc, you should probably know something... It takes a LONG time to bear out and properly write the character progression for a 3 arc trilogy, let alone a quality arc tying them together and symbosicizing the A,B, and C story lines. TLJ (I can't stomach typing jedi in this movies title, it just isn't appropriate) is a gross conglomerate of coprpeeate ignorance, substance abuse probls from the people they've hired, and then gas-lighting the community that wrote the stories they **** up on screen like it's no big deal. This was the sole reason the film saga for star wars is dead, and why any decent star wars programming now has to be segmented into short bits for TV shows, and it's even limited to Disney+

I originally wanted to congratulate this movie for growing a female character after its predecessor, but instead I just got cooked out story telling that didn't make sense and was a tragic insult to the woman that made the franchise:

Carrie Fischer
May she rest in peace

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My family and I go to Disney World every year. I was extremely happy when Disney obtained the rights for Star Wars because I thought it would be more Star Wars and because Disney usually does an outstanding job with its products. However, I grew up loving Star Wars and Luke Skywalker because Luke would never give up on his father no matter how terrible his father was. But for some reason, Luke no longer had that faithful determination that was the key to his growth in the Original Trilogy. It was obvious that Disney killed off Luke just so they could more easily expand the Star Wars Universe to make more money. They could have done it in a far better way by making him go out showing his true power and saving his friends. How this was not thought of is amazing. Not giving Luke a final amazing lightsaber duel is asinine. The greatest Star Wars character ever was treated like a burdensome character to deal with and so they just did away with him unceremoniously. I understand that I am upset because of how they handled Luke Skywalker and not upset with the quality of the movie itself. However, I think that my rating is appropriate because the source material for the movie was almost entirely disregarded (except for the facts that there are outer space scenes and the Force is involved in the story). If the Lord of the Rings was given a new Trilogy and that trilogy made Aragorn a feeble, depressed character then many fans would freak out on that issue as well.

I am so confounded on how Rian Johnson came to the conclusion that Luke Skywalker would act in the way he did in The Last Jedi. Even Mark Hammill thought his character in The Last Jedi wasn't true to form. The worst part of all is that Disney and Johnson are saying that the divisiveness The Last Jedi has caused is a positive thing. If you are losing half of your fan base how can that possibly be a good thing? It may be sad to some people that I can be so upset about a movie, but Star Wars was such a large part of my childhood (and my adulthood) that tarnishing so many of those happy memories for me if hard to move past. I will no longer be going to Disney after this year. The only reason I am still going this year is because I paid for tickets, a room, and a meal plan before The Last Jedi was released to theaters. Even though I love Disney, I cannot support a company that would so recklessly destroy a source of happiness for so many people. Hopefully, Luke Skywalker isn't dead and just found a way to transport himself through the Force to different locations. That's the only hope I have that Star Wars may not be ruined for good.

A divisive film that hasn't been understood and that doesn't accept third ways, is either beautiful or it sucks. The basic lack of physics understanding, massive plot and logic holes, and terrible characterizations are just a few of the reasons this was so horrible. They trashed the character of Luke, space Leia was absolutely ridiculous. The thirty minutes used for the stupid subplot on casino planet could have been well used to explain all the answers to the questions posed in EP 7. I'm really hoping box office will plummet so they know what an incredible disservice they did to fans.

Resistance is on the brink of destruction. And again, a distant, distant galaxy. Luke Skywalker returns after a huge number of years, back to the screens, and it's hard to judge whether it turned out well or badly. The film itself was shot perfectly, the script also turned out to be fascinating and almost 2 and a half hours fly by unnoticed. What caught my eye was stupid and unnecessary jokes in many places. When the intensity of passions seems to be already at the limit and such a joke flies out and immediately everything goes out. Otherwise, The Last Jedi is a good continuation of the franchise with, as always, a lot of fights and various planets with creatures. Expand

Stunning visuals, intricately woven together themes, the classic struggles between good and evil and finding your path to being a hero. This has everything that this long time fan wants out of a Star Wars film.

I reallyAs I've said before, we're not all film critics, and listening to whatever someone says online about a film and treat it as fact. I definitely enjoyed this film. Not my favorite in the sequel trilogy, but an enjoyable film overall. I really do wish they had explored Rose more, and that the casino scenes were a bit more fleshed out. The loss of the Admiral was truly painful for me, and it did suffer from the same problem all of the second movies in each Star Wars trilogy suffer: long, drawn out scenes that otherwise feel less important to the story overall. Personally, I don't see the reason for the insane hate for this movie, especially when Episode 2 exists. Could it have been better? Sure, but so can every Star Wars film. And for those who have complained about politics, every Star Wars film contains political themes going back to the originals, so saying that this movie has made Star Wars "political" shows how little people pay attention to history and film. Overall, I liked this movie. It didn't blow me away, but it was interesting, and the ways they really explored the force reminded me of Episode 5 with Yoda. It's definitely not Episode 5, but it's good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is not just as terrible sequel, it's a terrible film. Let's start with the positives. It's visually gorgeous and the music is fantastic. Several scenes are among the most artistic (visually) that I've ever seen in a live action film.

I'll just summarize the negatives. The characters and plotting make no sense. It wastes not only the classic Star Wars films but also the few promising elements introduced in The Force Awakens. Finn is suddenly just a bland, random guy (and somehow tagged as comic support). His interesting background as a defector is forgotten except for when the plot needs it. Rey loses her mysterious background and her surprisingly strong Force skills go unexplained, rendering her just a 'Mary Sue' when her power was hinted as being due to something far more interesting in The Force Awakens.

The hostility to everything that's come before - including the classic Star Wars films and The Force Awakens - is just tragic. The waste of Mark Hamill and Luke Skywalker is just... Terrible sequel. It doesn't do better as a standalone movie. It's tonally inconsistent, starting with a "your mommy" joke and making heavy misuse of comic relief.

The Director and writers clearly wanted to subvert Star Wars - trying to emulate Empire Strikes Back's role in the original triology - but failed utterly because they completely misunderstood what Empire Strikes Back actually did with A New Hope's narratie (inverted rather than subverted). Sigh. It does open up a copy of interesting plot points but then immediately closes them. If the film had ended with Rey and Kylo Ren taking control of the First Order it would have set the ground for a fantastic sequel. Instead it shut that down without doing anything interesting with it.

It's just a trash sequel and trash film ruined by corporate mismanagement.

So, I may be the biggest **** in the multiverse, but by every single rewatch, The Last Jedi gets better and better. And now, in 2022, I even feel bad for **** hating this movie back when it came out. Compared to the 9th episode, it's amazing, and, imo this is the best of the entire trilogy. It's like another example for the Watchmen-effect. The film ages like fine wine. At least, this movie got huge balls, great action sequences, a brave plot and some story as well!!! Kylo's character was still great, Rey was still annoying af, and Luke was still destroyed in many aspects. But for some reason, the film feels great. It works. And it provided an excellent foundation for a never-done 9th episode. It's flawed, really, but not a mess. There was some complete **** as well in the movie (Holdo, Canto Bight), but at least they weren't pointless. Overall, I'd say it's much better than we remember, but still "only" a good movie. And I can't believe I'm writing this, but now I almost agree with the critics who praised The Last Jedi "anno". And it gets a 7 from me. Somehow. Don't ask. No idea why.

It's quite an engrossing watch, even though I can't claim I followed all the plot intricacies (I'll leave that to others). It did feel like it covers quite a bit of ground, as it were. There are some thought provoking pieces of dialogue present and even some amusing comedic moments, as well as, of course, the numerous fast paced battle scenes. I thought the different landscapes were intriguing. Nearly everywhere seems to have big sweeping vistas. There's one scene in particular towards the end which was quite a gripping watch - two big characters facing off against one another but I'll say no more, so as not to provide 'full blown' spoilers.

Yes I'd recommend this to fans of action sci-fi films and anyone looking for a CGI filled bit of entertainment for the 2 hour and 25 minute run time it lasts (if you stop just as the credits start).

Even the jokes that were made were tired. This didn't really feel like a Star Wars movie; it was more like a Disney movie. The screenplay for this movie should have been tighter considering how long it is. Although the narrative was a shambles, the cinematography and visual effects were still fantastic, and the directing was passable. I'm not sure how somebody could give this a 1 (after seeing so many of those) without giving the visuals any credit. I give it a fair and honest 6 out of 10. Expand

Everything wrong with Episode 7 dialed up to 11, and then turned on it's head for good measure. Whereas JJ Abrams may be a wholly mediocre director unworthy of the franchises he's involved in, Rian Johnson is a talentless hack whose contribution to this franchise could be described as an offensive dumpster fire at best, and frankly comes off more like intentional act of vandalism against the world itself, the fanbase, and even JJ Abrams' previous milquetoast entry. The only positive elements are the performances of the OT actors, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaacs. Even then, the writing and directing is simply so bad as to be unworthy of the actors or their characters. Expand

ToWhat a disappointment: The plot is boring and has even some contradictions to the older episodes, especially that the empire was destroyed in episode VI, but in VII und VIII it is a big force again only the name changed to First Order. To make it more ridiculous some scenes were copied from older episodes (attack on the rebel base, Ren with Rey in front of Snoke is the same like in episode 6). In addition there were some hints in episode VII that were not further developed in VIII. Oh and did you notice the many weird actions by the characters that didnt make much sense. The characters are horrible: Leia is old and survive an explosion and the vacuum in the universe -> lol. Rey is boring and doesnt fit to Star Wars, Kylo Ren is boring also. Rose and Fin ... forget them.
Did you notice the many political correct elements in the movie, especially the feminism here? -> Episode VII was also garbage. The political correctness was so annoying, Laura Dern as Admiral Holdo was a nightmare to watch.
The only good scenes were with Mark Hamilton, the action scenes and the visual effects.

But in the realms of the Star Wars saga, it 100% is. The Last Jedi is everything a Star Wars movie is/should be, and goes even beyond that. Its themes are woven into the fabric of the story, so that while the plot moves forwards there isn't a single moment on screen that does not teach our characters a lesson - or shows that they have failed at learning one. Mark Hamill delivers his best performance as Luke in what is, in my opinion, one of the best takes on bringing back a legacy character to a sequel. Even better: the movies takes unexpected turns for the viewer, that yet make perfect sense for the characters. Contrary to what has been said too many times, it follows perfectly and expands upon most of what was set up in The Force Awakens, while pulling the saga forwards in new thematic directions. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like this movie...I was willing to give TFA a bit of a pass as they were trying to bridge the OT to the ST, there needs to be some intrigue, mystery, etc. And there are some beautifully shot moments in the film. But that's where it ends. The plot makes little to no sense at all in any way whatsoever. Space Gas is the core of the issues here. Somehow the Giant spaceships can't keep up with the rebel ships. But Kylo's fighters can...so why not just send out more fighters? or do you only have 3-5 on the capital ship? The Holdo Maneuver...Looked cool, but so impractical. If that was a real thing, then why just let the rest of your ships just run out of gas and fall to the side? why not just suicide them as well? Why not put a droid in there and have it kamikaze? why not put boosters on giant asteroids and then have droids fly them into the enemies? Luke....oh Luke...The ever present optimist turned into...well, this. They couldn't have ruined Luke's character anymore than they did here. Even Hamill said this isn't how Luke would act but they told him to shut up and color. I don't believe Luke would ever have acted on his thoughts.

Any military leader of any kind would have to disclose their plan of some sort rather than keep it a secret and continue to tell everyone riddles and lines from hallmark cards. Even a 2 second throw away line of "there are imperial spies" would have at least given them some sort of reason for not disclosing the plan all at once. But that's what compartmentalization is for - no one person has all the data except top brass. and last I checked, Commander Poe is only 2 away from admiral and is supposed to be the celebrated hero and best pilot of the resistance (by their own words and lore). but no...he's obviously not trustworthy.

The entire kanto bite scene was unnecessary and silly. screw the shield and stuff, let's rescue the space horses. oh, and we got found out because we parked in the wrong spot? I get what they were trying to say: arms dealers profit off the rebels and imperials the same. War is a business, etc. But it landed with a thud because it was just another punchline. Snoke - no one knows or cares about Snoke cuz he died. Mystery over. he's obviously not important. Big bad over. Finn was easily possibly the most interesting character. He could have talked about the millions of innocent contractors and admin staff just working to make a living for their families. He could have talked about his best friend that died and shook him from his "programming" but instead, he was turned into a punchline/joke. This was just written tying up all the loose ends and wound up ruining the next movie and franchise in general. "Subversion" is just a new buzz word to shield people from failure. This was a multibillion dollar franchise that printed money. Fans were relatively forgiving - look at the PT - it aged well overall with people liking the Clone Wars material. Whatever...I've seen the movie twice and not since it's release week. Meanwhile, I watch episodes 1-6 every year in May. Good job Johnson - you're obviously a master.
