And if we wanted to watch a good movie in the meantime we watched the old versions of great ones, you know ones made by quality filmmakers who needed a GOOD NEW story to make a new one. Instead of writing a review complaining about some kind of SJW agenda in Star Wars, why don't you put on a t-shirt that says 'I'm an old and embittered white male' and post a selfie. It would save time and be less of a drag to read.

If the energy of the train heist was kept throughout, it would've got a much higher score from me.

Because, when I heard of the many production woes and trials that occurred along the way in crafting this film, I was sure the final product would be tired, boring, and devoid of meaning. And though it would still take a lot to convince me that this movie absolutely needed to happen, it's most certainly not boring or tired. In fact, director Ron Howard's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is - at times - The rip-roaring, smooth-talking space actioner I was hoping it could be. And aside from a few head-scratcher creative choices here and there, I think it works overall as a film. Expand

Solo is a good Star Wars movie but nothing special. The moments that work in this film really work and the moments that don't work really don't work. There are a few moments that stand out but a lot of this film forgettable. Alden Ehrenreich is a good Han Solo, as long as you don't expect him to be Harrison Ford. Emilia Clark is good in the role and Paul Bettany is good as the villain (even though he isn't in the movie for a majority of the runtime). Donald Glover is the most memorable out of the entire cast and steals the show in every scene. There is one big surprise in this film but unfortunately it feels like a setup for another film or a sequel. In any case, the surprise was amazing and I can't wait to see what they do next. There are a lot of small moments that make this an above average movie but there are too many small missteps to make this a great Star Wars film. If your a Star Wars fan it's worth seeing, if not, you can probably wait until it's released on Blu-Ray. Expand

A fun Saturday-morning cartoon.

I had low expectations for this movie, and it delivered almost exactly what I expected, but in the end I enjoyed it. The actors did a pretty good job, despite the big shoes they had to fill. Han Solo was a character that was basically created by Harrison Ford, so finding an actor other than Ford to play Han Solo was a tall order. Alden Ehrenreich did a great job playing a Solo-esq character, but he failed to act exactly like the Han Solo we all know. Same goes for Donald Glover with Lando. That being said, Chewbacca was spot on. The rest of the cast also did a good job playing the original characters. The Effects were good, but not as good as the previous Disney Star Wars movies. There were moments where the CG was obvious, and there were certain scenes that were just plain hard to see due to it being so dark. The individual scenes weren't mind-boggling, but they weren't cringy either. The action bits were well choreographed, and the one-liners got a few chuckles from me.

As for the script, there were a few issues I had. This might be a bit silly, but Han Solo was almost as much of a Marty Sue in this film that Rey was a Mary Sue. There were a few scenes where he fails embarrassingly, but most of his decisions just seem to work out for him. His pilotling skills were epic, yet they never explain how he became such a good pilot beyond "he was a good pilot in the academy". He's also a good shot with a blaster, and quick on the draw, despite having grown up without a blaster and only receiving one on his first big heist. The other part I didn't like about the writing was the politics, though it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There were a few winks and nods to the social justice crowd, but they were merely one-liners. I found L3 to actually be a funny character as a self-righteous egotistical jerk. Whether that was intentional or not is anyone's guess. If it wasn't for two seconds of choreography in a certain scene, you'd think that L3 saying Lando was in love with her was simply one her being delusional. Also, there's nothing in this movie that suggests Lando is into dudes, so whoever said Lando was pansexual was high. (if anything, he's just into sentient females. He's the same womanizer he presents himself as during his first appearance in Empire). Most of the political stuff surrounding this film comes from the writers mouthing off on twitter (example http://archive.is/AUQvk). If you ignore their bologna, the movie is much more enjoyable.

I don't know what people are complainingOkay, maybe this one is just for Star Wars fans or something, but I don't really believe that. This was, unexpectedly, one the most fun and exciting action/adventure movies I've seen in a LONG time. I don't know what people are complaining about but this movie had me shoveling the popcorn into my face, feelin' the feels, laughing - but only an APPROPRIATE amount, unlike other recent Star Wars movies that have packed in TOO MANY jokes - and applauding at the end. I'm not a huge fan of Alden Erinreich, but he did a rather good job with these giant shoes he had to fill, and although he's not how I pictured a young Han Solo, he didn't do a bad job at all. The tone felt right, the characters were believable, and the big set-piece/action sequences were perfect - never too long or over-bloated.

If you don't have fun at this movie, I think you probably hate "fun" in general... and I pity you.

Haters are gonna hate because they hate every time a Star Wars movie isn’t The EmpireSo half of the audience reviews are people who haven’t seen the movie, but just “think this will be trash”. Or are boycotting because of reason x,y,x. Haters are gonna hate because they hate every time a Star Wars movie isn’t The Empire Strikes Back, clearly the best of the lot, A film which people forget was assaulted by critics when it came out, is now the unattainable height by which all Star Wars movies are unfairly measured. Is this movie that good? Of course not, no movie is that good and never will be. Accept this fact and stop depriving yourself of the possibility of enjoyment. My goodness. Do you need to check your expectations at the door? You might if you are expecting Empire or a life-changing moment in your life. If on the other hand you are a person who can appreciate the good in something without all this absolutism...."Its the best ever" vs "It destroyed star wars and my life forever"...and you can just go see a movie in a universe you love, with characters you want to see. Then you have a great treat in store for you. And that is not to take anything away from this film. It works exceptionally well more often than not. This movie isn’t perfect, but it is a Star Wars movie to its core, probably more so than some of the new trilogy movies. I had so much fun at this movie. As I watched this movie I could feel my childhood self screaming with glee in my head while my adult self yipped with joy aloud. This movie succeeds in a lot of ways, most of them. For someone to say this movie is rotten is just laughable to me. The look of the movie alone is worth the price of admission. Fortunately you get so much more. This is the funniest Star Wars movie, but still a very action packed movie. I’ve heard some people say it had “slow” parts. I guess, but I think some of my favorite moments were just hanging out on the Falcon, shooting the breeze for a few minutes with these characters I love. The moments where i could just be allowed to float in this world without the story being crammed at me like sometimes it is in blockbuster movies, were wonderful. The beginning is a little rocky, but 15 mins in and it starts to find its footing. Halfway through the second act I felt like I was inside an expanded universe comic. It was really a fun time. I think this movie is going to age really well. It has some scenes in it which are the best of any SW movie, even the original trilogy. Don’t listen to the haters. This is a quality adventure that was really needed. I haven't had this much fun in a movie in a long time. One of my favorites immediately and it expands the universe in great ways. Expand

I'm giving kudos to the actors as they deserve praise for doing a good job. As with The Last Jedi, it was the cast that made the film memorable. Everything else on the other hand...

It was Disney's controllers that gave me great disdain for this film and many other recent Disney films. One can research and see the heads of this industry have a corrupt agenda. And it is this that has been plaguing the modern film in the past decade or so. Enough of the SJW hints in the films or trying to paint certain cultures as bad.

For crying out loud just make decent movies. Movies that relate to the universe in which the characters and plots take place. Stop bringing real world issues into them. Focus solely on the plot of the film, and the movie would be good. If somebody wants to see footage of political or social events, that's what the news networks are for.

Let me reiterate: 10/10 for the actors and those that worked on the movie sets. 0/10 for the ones who own Disney and inject their agendas into the films.

One character that really stands out is Solo's gang leader's pilot droid who steals all the scenes she is in and is quite funny.
Woody harrelson plays the Ringleader straight without eccentricities which was good.

It puts together Star Wars’ 4th straight and uninnovative “crew/ensemble story”, has poor pacing, and, aside from a decent action set piece (the train battle), it is just boring, predictable, and pointless. Finally, the stakes are next to none since we know who lives and dies or at least becomes relevant. Overall, this movie should have never been greenlit in favor of better solo (no pun intended) movies for other great characters. The film is purely peripheral for diehard Star Wars fans and not worth it for casual fans and moviegoers. Expand

This movie is neither good or bad. It takes advantage of the good cast it has with good acting and good dialogue, at times. The relationships make sense, and the chemistry between actors were good.

The start of the movie was really slow, they needed a lot of action to try and pace up the story, action that in the start wasn't well crafted. Sometimes the camera work seemed a bit shaky, and the movie lacked real meaningful stakes, the "main villain" was weak as a character.

The final act was good, that's the part i enjoyed the most, with everyone doubling crossing everyone, showing the real point of the Han Solo character and where the movie was taking it

Bad movie, Don't waste your money. Climax is underwhelming, and the scenes with L3-37 are jarring, they don't fit the plot, and make the film unwatchable. If all the L3-37 scenes were removed, it might be an ok movie.

The bad side is that everything that is going to happen is very predictable, not only because we already know the fate of the main characters, also the main plot is predictable and not risky, yet it never gets boring thanks to the correct interpretation of the actors and the great actions scenes.

I felt a little disappointed because it was missing the traditional Star Wars scrolling opening while being blasted by the music of John Williams (even though he DID compose the music alongside John Powell). There WAS an opening card sequence quickly detailing Han's back story up to that point. We were able to see who Han really is, how he obtained the millennium falcon, and how he became such close friends with Chewbacca the Wookie. Donald Glover did an amazing job as young Lando Calrissian. I absolutely love Woody Harrelson and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in this film. There were some really great twists and turns throughout the story with a gasp-worthy revelation at the very end. As much as I love and respect Ron Howard, I really don't feel he was the right fit for a Star Wars film. This was more a Ron Howard movie than a Star Wars movie. That being said, overall, I really enjoyed this film and would recommend it to my friends whether they were already existing Star Wars fans or new to the franchise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You have to remember that these spin-off movies are not going to be in the same vein as the original trilogy, and honestly that is what makes Solo GREAT! It a story of who Han was before we met him in the Mos Eisley cantina. Granted, some things were over-played *cough cough the gravity hole*, it was truly enjoyable throughout and made me wanting more when the closing credits rolled. Donald Glover's performance as Lando was brilliant and the female powerhouses of Emillia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Pheobe Waller-Bridge drove the plot along. Once you get over the fact that Solo (amongst planned spin-offs for Obi Wan and Boba Fett) aren't supposed to be told in the same fashion as the original trilogy, Solo was exciting and enticing from the moment that blue scroll appeared to the final credits and the perfect start to a summer of fantastic movies. But this movie is EXACTLY what I have always loved about Star Wars: it's a bustling, swashbuckling space western. The comedy notes are actually played perfectly, and the movie gets genuine laughs without coming across as pathetically desperate for the jokes to hit. Alden Ehrenreich does a solid job of portraying Han, again, I can't see anyone nailing that role. Supporting cast is all terrific, especially Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a no-nonsense droid activist. Really the only thing that could really boost this movie over the top would have been some more creature encounters (which for some reason no new Star Wars movie seems to include), although this movie has one memorable one. In short, I walked into this expecting to never want to see it again, and now not only can I not wait to see it again, I would be into a sequel, or even a spin-off movie with some of these new characters.
P.S. The sad men in these low scored reviews who are devastated by the 'feminist robot', etc, are a pure joy to read. I'm a man, I've loved Star Wars all my life, and I would put my Star Wars nerddom up against anyone. I like baseball, comic books, off-roading, all kinds of traditionally 'male stuff' and this movie is great. Grow up, small men!

The plot didn't just move along, it raced and got sloppy. While the special effects were well done, it was the poor acting, (or maybe just poor script-writing?) that tanked it for me. The kids enjoyed it, but this isn't one I would want to watch again. Also- I don't mind a little girl power, but the pro- third wave feminism was spackled on a tad thick, there are ways to promote ideas subtly, with greater effect in the end; the creators of this movie had no idea how to do this. And Lando is a pansexual with a sexual fetish for female droids, which doesn't make any sense, because in Empire he was either indifferent to droids or he hated them. He LIKED WOMEN! What's wrong with Lando liking women?

Then Chewie gets in the shower naked with Han.

The kids are never seeing this. Ron Howard you did a terrible job. I bet Lord and Miller would have made a much better movie.

There are some minor issues with the plot - bizarre hyperinflation in a stated 3 year period, a critical element only being found on one planet - but nothing that takes you out of the experience. The acting is pretty solid, I was skeptical when Donald Glover was cast as Lando, but by the end of the movie I was sold.

Solo, in a word, is great. It's a non-stop adrenaline ride, exactly what I wanted out of the movie, one of the best heist movies I've seen in years. While Alden and Donald are never quite convincing as Han and Lando, they did their best job filling difficult shoes, and that is good enough. All of the new characters are likeable except for L3, who I have mixed feelings about, though sadly a few of them like Rio are wasted. The writers' attempts to show Lando as a pansexual who is romantically interested in the robot L3 were a bit cringeworthy, but aside from that the movie is great. I deducted 2 points from my score for the obvious SJW influences that went into developing Lando and L3, leaving my final score at 8/10. Expand

It fails being a prequel, while it also cannot become an actual standalone movie. The story is as bland and predictable as it could be, and it's pretty obvious that its sole purpose is to fill in the gaps between scenes where Han meets Lando, Chewie, or the Falcon; the visuals are totally forgettable, the characters are two dimensional and they don't get from A to B, while they also cannot convey any emotions neither to other characters nor to the viewers ; and I could continue. Surprisingly, Alden Ehrenreich does a fine job in this movie, but it definitely doesn't capture the essence of Han Solo, like how this movie doesn't understand the universe in where it stands. Expand

The surprise cameo of a certain character from other films left my jaw on the floor.
The Bad: The story lacked any kind of a strong villain or convincing stakes. One particular action sequence went on forever and was simply boring. The film was tonally very monotonous being dark and claustrophobic throughout. Not enough epic establishing shots or strongly developed sense of where the characters are.
The Ugly: The musical score is a complete failure...to a point where it nearly sinks the film. Gone are the memorable and perfectly timed motifs and poetic artistry of John Willams, replaced by general wallpaper movie-music that you'd never buy to listen to on it's own. Lando's droid comes across as a somewhat annoying, pro-rights droid activist, which was interesting, but it was so relentlessly ham-fisted and pervasive throughout.

I thoroughly enjoyed Solo, and the spin it had on the reasons “WHY” Harrison Ford’s Solo was charismatic, rough around the edges, a diamond in the rough. Not everyone starts life jaded. I think all the actors played their role extremely well, and the movie went back to the basics of storytelling. There were little nuggets and shout outs to all fan boys, but this was a spin-off from the trilogy. With regards to the politics infused into Star Wars, I will agree Disney needs to eliminate this undertone to its SW movie franchise. However, I have been a long time SW fan (established in 1977) and I will say nothing beats the original trilogy, but the only two great movies for me that has come from Disney’s SW are Rogoue One and Solo. This movie delivered entertainment, twisted romance, comedy and a great cameo! I love Hans Solo and Chewy even more now than ever! This movie, for me, is better than ANY DC or MARVEL (excluding Deadpool 1 and 2) movie. Expand

It's aLOL remember when a new Star Wars movie was a major cultural event, with people lining up and getting excited for it? This is the first time I've ever seen a Star Wars movie arrive and most of the public doesn't even seem aware of it. It's a total "meh, I guess maybe I'll see it, though I'd rather go see Avengers again".

And well it should be, considering that this is quite possibly the worst Star Wars Disney has made yet (though Last Jedi is tough competition for that title). Han has none of the edgy cool that made people love him in 1977, he spends most of the movie being bullied by shrill women. Lando swishes and sashays through every scene, totally unlike the cool dude from Empire Strikes Back. The Kessel Run story gets wrecked too through the use of a lame "shortcut". No surprise this movie had a very troubled production and had to be almost entire re-shot, though it looks like it didn't help that much.

Anyway, skip it and watch it on Netflix, if at all.

Till this point the sequel movies have been a disappointment, no world building or real character building and most of that blame would be put on The Last Jedi for that but that's neither here nor there. The point is, is that this film is actually good, perhaps even better than Rogue One(which was the only previous Disney Star Wars film I've enjoyed) Surprisingly Alden Ehrenreich has the charm and swashbuckling style of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, I was really cautious going in and I have to say that the trailers did not do Alden justice but perhaps that was intentional I don't know. Donald Glover is pretty good as Lando and I really liked Woody Harrelson's character, they fit their parts. Another actor who's also pretty good is Emilia Clarke, she was pretty bland in the Terminator movie but here she's actually charming in her role. The robot L3-37, right... some people wont like her but I imagine some people will, she's played a certain way that one will see as either and endearing or annoying but I personally really liked her character too. Anyways the critic scores interesting because these are the same people that gave The Last Jedi glowering reviews, obviously there's something shady going on there. I give this this film an 8 just like Rogue One because it's surprisingly cohesive, the characters work well in their roles, the story focuses far more on these characters than I thought it would, i'd say this is definitely more worth your money to watch than The Last Jedi was. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You are here probably wondering if Han Solo got emasculated and ruined as a character even more. The answer is a resounding yes. His name now has a origin that is lamer than anything you could imagine. He is alone when he signs up for the Empire, says his name is Han so the Empire names him Han Solo. He gets bossed around most of the movie by women, there is a disturbing dong to dong shower scene with Han and Chewbacca (no I 'm not kidding). The new droid is a fem1nist from hell and the most annoying thing ever seen in Star Wars and Lando who gets more feminine throughout the movie loves it. Basically this is just another Kathleen Kennedy propaganda film where they strategically try to remove any masculinity from legacy characters. All women in the movie are more masculine than Han. They are all more intelligent and more confident than Han. Oh and yes there is a Darth Maul cameo that has no resolution and it's comical when he fired up a lightsaber for no reason. Enfys Nest is a 16 year old girl rebel who is basically Rey without the force, so even more ridiculous. Avoid if you liked Star Wars. Go see if you hate men and hated the original Star Wars and are glad to endorse the destruction of the franchise. Also highly recommended for kids if you want to damage your son and give him low self esteem. The only reason I didn't rate it a zero is most of these review sites consider scores like that "trolling". It deserves a 0 though. Star Wars is simply dead. Read the Thrawn Trilogy instead and just give up on Disney Star Wars. Expand

Most likely everyone saying anything positive about it in the user-section will get downvoted heavily, too, as people can´t distinguish anymore between a crusade on Disney´s mishandling of the main-series and the actual quality of a movie. I´m not a shill, I´m not enthralled by Disney and I am severely disappointed by how Episode 7 and especially 8 went, as many rightfully are, but still people will assume the worst things about me simply because I will not be convenient for their cause by liking a new Star Wars movie.

Solo, despite everything being stacked against it, turned out to be really good and the most Star Wars-y since Return of the Jedi. The characters are engaging and fun, yet also not lacking in complexity and flaws. Especially Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo and yes, Alden Ehrenreich fill their roles with so much vibrancy and life that it is a joy to watch. The action is playful and exciting without a need for "hypercharging" everything as JJ Abrams and Johnson did, it´s easy to follow yet the setpieces are memorable and harken back to the good old "lived-in universe"-feel of the old trilogy I love so much. The story is both mature and accessible with a couple fun twists and turns that help portray the seedy underbelly of the galaxy. The moments every fan was waiting for yet dreaded because they could so easily be grating with the wrong execution are handled gracefully, confident and understated which was fantastic to see. The biggest problem is the pacing of the movie; in the middle of it, it drags for about twenty minutes as the further direction of it has been established yet the stakes are not quite there yet. It recovers quickly from this stutter, though, leading into a superb third act.

In short: Solo somewhat rekindled my hope that there can still be good Star Wars movies that create the fun and excitement of the old movies while standing on their own. I am sad that so many will not give it a chance simply by feeling in the right to slam everything Star Wars till Disney fixes its main-series titles. Solo deserves better and our current user-review climate does, too.

Clarke, was a waste of space. Worst than Terminator:Genesis. And another thing they recycled almost the entire music score from New Hope and Empire. Oh the fly through intro crawl, was cool.

When this was announced, we all had low expectations - "nobody can convincingly play the young version of an established character". I was minded that if they made it "just about" plausible and believable, then even if it wasn't great, I would be satisfied. But this Han Solo actor beat those expectations and played him to a convincing degree! It was not "just about okay"; it was convincing from his look, to his voice, right down to his mannerisms. Was it perfect and was it 100% the Han Solo we know? No, but this would be impossible to achieve and unrealistic to expect. But I promise you can put whatever subtle differences he displays down to him "being a younger Han Solo". The point is, it's better than "just about okay". On a scale of 1 to 10, where 5 is "neutral just bobbing between okay and not", I'd give it an 8 or 9, simply because 10 is impossible. It was a great attempt and you can tell the actor put in the effort and rose to the challenge so as not to disappoint us.

This film suffers a little from the fact that there is no obvious overarching plot. It's more of a silent documentary and biography of how Han Solo became a smuggler, and obviously ends with him setup to become the Han Solo that we see in EP4, rather than with a typical "good guy kills bad guy, happily ever after" ending that we're used to. This is fine, because the film is great and exciting.

I have seen people criticise the lack of the Millenium Falcon doing many complex manoeuvres in this film: don't listen to these critics. Scenes of the millenium falcon doing sophisticated battle manoeuvres were not necessary because the other action scenes were sufficient. We've already seen what the falcon can do enough times, so it would have just been filler and repetetive anyway. Plus, this film was not about the Millenium Falcon, it was about Han Solo the Smuggler. How can we learn about his tricks as a smuggler if the focus is on the falcon dodging ties and flying through planet and asteroid cores?

As a film: 8/10 - As a film, it lacked an overarching plot. As a film, it left me satisfied but not wowed. Satisfied is all I require for a good rating however.

As a SW film: 9/10 - As a SW film, the lack of an obvious overarching plot in a side story is understandable.

It seems the "A Star Wars Story" series are hitting every note, while the main episodes are still finding their footing and letting us down in the process.

Related media: I have seen all of the Star Wars films, but chose to sit The Last Jedi out and save my money. I had a bad feeling about it… after watching The Force Awakens.

What's it like?: It tells the story of Han, from his tough youth at Corellia, shipyard of the Empire’s fleet, to when he wins the Millennium Falcon from Lando (not a spoiler). New events and characters were added to his canon and one detail appears to be there just for Disney to spin-off a character to another film, say Solo 2? Overall, the film didn’t feel special – there were not much tension or surprises, and the soldiers/guards still can’t shoot! Positives: 1) Lando is flamboyant and L3, the robot, is funny and interesting as a robot-suffragist.

Negatives: 1) The story is not surprising or special and it lacks that Star Wars essence. Without the Han Solo brand, it would not really stand out. Rogue One felt similar for most of the film, but it did have the epic space battle at the end to sum it all up.

2) The film seems to be written just to explain why the Kessel run happened. The part of the story near the ‘run’ felt contrived and it had a few lazy Star Wars myths thrown in there.

3) The film also explains how Han gets his name, how he meets Chewie, why he's called Chewie and why Han shoots first, mostly in the most conventional and uninspiring of ways. That's the director's fault.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Good
Teens: Good
Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema.
