This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

OUI, OUI, OUI, j’ai adoré ce spin-off.

Wait & See.

As with many of this year's other action-adventure offerings, the supporting cast members outshine the lead, who, in this case, can't come close to capturing the swagger, swashbuckling and sarcasm of his predecessor. What's more, the 3D effects are virtually nonexistent, so don't waste the extra ticket fee on this nearly absent attribute. This is one best saved for when it comes to cable or DVD. Expand

We know he's going to befriend Chewie. We know he's going to get the Falcon. It's the how that is so intriguing here. Is Han the loner everyone says he is? This movie deals with the importance of belonging to something. Different characters need different things, and Han is figuring all that out for himself. With a little help from his friends. The pacing is a little slow at first, but that is important. What is important is how it all finishes up, with typical Han action you'd come to expect. Expand

If you are a true Star Wars fan, you will probably see it in the theathers but if you are just a cinema lover you will not enjoy this flick. I highly recommend you pass this one. Is not worth it. Summing up: -Good VFX
-Bad Casting in general (except from some Lando & Chewbacca moments)
-Bad music score. -It seems more like Fast & Furious in space than anything related to Star Wars. - Non existent plot. - One of the worst endings ever. Disney really need to check before doing this much Star Wars movies in a row. This will be my last time i see a Star Wars movie in the cinema. I wont even go to see EP9 regardless if it has a 99 score in metacritic. It shows that Disney wants to get their money back from their investment but this is not the way. Kathleen Kennedy should be fired and in her place should be a producer who really understand this universe like Dave Filoni.

There was a time where it seemed like the general expectation was for it to absolutely suck, and to be honest I expected it to be pretty bad as well. But, it was just fine. Great? No, but this was a solid movie for the summer season and it may be the most Star Wars-like movie of the Disney-era thus far. Story: The story of Solo doesn't add much to the world of Star Wars other than giving us a little bit of background on Han and revealing how he gets involved with Jabba before A New Hope. It's very contained within itself, which is probably a good thing because not every spin-off has to be filled with connections to the main films. Anyway, the story follows a younger Han as he goes from being a street rat to a scoundrel. There's a lot of fun to be had, and it really does feel like a Star Wars movie. There are a few issues with pacing, but I didn't find any parts of the movie particularly boring like some other people did. Script: I'm not exactly sure how this was once labeled as "one of the best Star Wars scripts", because there wasn't anything particularly great about the script. Of course, I don't know what the first draft looked like, but nothing from the production script really stuck out to me as better than any other Star Wars script. There was also a lot of humor in Solo that fell incredibly flat with the audience I saw it with. Even when I laughed, it seemed like no one else did. And, actually, the entire audience didn't seem as into it as they usually are for Star Wars movies. It was weird. Acting: Alden Ehrenreich was very solid as Han Solo. I bought into him being Han within the first few minutes. Donald Glover is also really good as Lando, and I honestly feel like he was one of the best parts of the movie. Everyone else does good as well, but I really, really couldn't stand L3. She just came off as a K-2SO wannabe and I feel like they felt obligated to have another "woke" droid play the comedic relief. It didn't work for me. Cinematography: As with all of the new generation Star Wars movies, Solo has great cinematography. Everything looks awesome, and I really liked the gritty look they went for with some of the locations/settings. Overall: Solo is a fun Star Wars movie. It may be the "worst" out of the Disney-era films, but it definitely doesn't suck. Expand

Mile high expectations collide with a troubled production and a muddled story to create the least engaging of the modern day Star Wars movies. Not that it is without its charms, but this is the first time I can ever recall shifting in my seat during a Star Wars movie, wondering if there was much more to go. Star Wars must not ever, ever be boring.

Alden Ehrenreich is an actor I've liked for quite some time (I wonder how many fan boys saw his 'sit up and take notice' film "Tetro") but as charming as he is, I never thought of him as more than one of those costume rental website models wearing the "Han Solo".

On the other hand, there's man of the moment, Donald Glover, underused but highly entertaining as Lando Calrissian. I loved his relationship with the de rigeur talking robot sidekick/translator/love interest(!?!).

The producers came perilously close to making him look like a fool (the cape thing, the memoirs) and I actually thought they could have used him to better effect. The gambling for control of the Millenium Falcon carried no intrigue because we all know what the outcome is going to be, so I think a bit more thought could have been given to that.

Full disclosure, I've never watched "Game Of Thrones", so I only know Emilia Clarke as that blonde actor with the dragons on all the HBO ads. She was just fine as Han's first love interest turned Darth Maul moll. And Paul Bettany, so bland in the Avengers films, is slightly better as the pirate king or whatever he was supposed to be. His knives were cool.

One thing that really worked for me was the introduction of Chewbacca and how he and Solo came to be friends (fun fact: when you type Chewbacca and right click to auto-correct, the suggestion is "Backache").

And then there's Woody Harrelson, already one of my least favorite actors. I don't know what it is about his lazy, slurred-speech and generally smug performances, but he always takes me out of a movie, but that's a personal thing. I suppose he was fine. But I would have swapped out him for Thandie Newton's character in a heartbeat (and it might have elevated the film even further, but Woody is a star).

The birth of the rebellion subplot had all the emotional resonance of an Ancestry.com commercial, so I had trouble getting too engaged in that.

But here's what did work for me: the effects were quite good and some of the action sequences were terrific (especially the train robbery). And I honestly shuddered when the Imperial blockade appeared in the the swirling vortex thing during their escape from the hyperspeed slave planet.

Anyway, I'll probably watch it again. Maybe we're just being pummeled with too many 'event movies' these days. "Infinity War" already seems so long ago and "Black Panther" is available in the classics section on Shaw on Demand, isn't it?

Not too much fan service, just the right amount of humor, solid stakes; all around it's a fun swashbuckling adventure. The effects team deserves all the credit in the world, they make every CG scene feel real: whether its snapping cables hitting a building or debris scattering off the Falcon, it's easy to forget that much of the film is computer generated. You can see where Solo learns the lessons that make him the person he is that we see in A New Hope. Ehrenreich isn't a replacement for Harrison Ford, but he brings his own style to the character, enough to carry the film. Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover devour the screen with their presence. I'm shocked to say it, but I'd like to see more of Solo and Lando together in films like this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie looked disgusting for a large portion, crushed colours, bad colour correction, and poor lighting aplenty. The scene in the coaxium mines was particularly ugly, having had a yellow poorly superimposed in post, and the distracting flashing lights everywhere. Continuing with poor colours, the first third or so of the movie had a hideous colour scheme that was constantly present and invasive. A large portion of the characters was whiny and forgettable, such as the four-armed alien guy. The Chewbacca fight scene was edited in a way that made it almost impossible to follow, due to its abundance of jump cuts and handheld film. The plot was something out of a Skyrim sidequest, being that it was just a fanservice fetch quest. Speaking of fan service, did this movie ever have some to offer, and boy was it distracting, unnecessary, and stupid. Lando and the girl character felt very disingenuine throughout a majority of the movies run time. The plot was a piece of predictable overdone garbage, that felt like it was trying too hard and led only to the fanboys' wet panties. Since fanservice is the only reason anyone sat through this, it is revealed that Darth Maul is back, because why not, death doesn't mean anything anyways. Woody Harrelson was quite the mixed bag throughout this film, delivering some fairly decent quips, but at the same time following up with poor line delivery. This movie was not good, it was an ugly, unnecessary, excuse for a film. If you think you want to see this, you probably have, otherwise, steer clear. Despite this, I can't hate the film, it is clear that the Disney execs held the production of this film with an iron grasp, thus stifling its creative possibilities. Plus I saw this with family, so it was less toxically unbearable at the time. Expand

Watched in IMAX Waterloo on Saturday.

I did not expect much and was hoping for a good adventure film. I am afraid this film is so average that it is even hard to feel negative about it as it would take it below a 5 - average mark. If any doctor measured my heartbeat throughout the film then they would have recorded a perfectly symmetrical oscillations.

The main issue: The story was weak. At no point did it feel exciting or suspenseful. It was a waste of Woody and Paul Bettany. Khaleesi also felt out of place. There is a bit of a face fatigue there - for all three famous actors here. A new character, unknown quantity, a la Han, would have been better. Lando was another disappointment - trying too hard to be too cool for school but not pulling it off. Start from rubbish dialogue to underwhelming attire. Chewie and his plot arc were also weak. A lot of mental gymnastics went into this film.

There was a welcome appearance at the end of the film but it was too late to save it.

Overall - bland, predictable and a wasted opportunity.

Solo is, to me, the only half decent film that came out in the Disney era, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's a movie nobody wanted that does very little in improving the characters or the universe.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is the story of a street wise rogue who goes into a job for selfish reasons only to then decide to fight the good fight on the side of the oppressed. Basically, Han's character arc in A New Hope. Nobody expects originality from Disney at this point, but even for them the plot of this movie is shameselly recycled. And the characters don't help either. I know it was a near imposible task to find an actor that could capture Harrisson Ford's wit and charisma but even Kathllen Kennedy and her Lucasfilm goons could have found a better lead than this talking buublehead with a balding pattern that they got to play Solo. And Lando is even worse because the writter's idea of portraying the cool and suave Lando is to make him a flamboiant creep who screws robots. And can we finally stop pretending Emilia Clarke can act? The only good thing about her performance is that she will probably have to get naked in GoT to save her career again. The only decent performance is Harrelson's, but even he lacks any chemistry with the main character.

There are good things about this movie though. The first Act is probably the best, showing some cool aliens, a short but sweet war scene, Han's friendship with Chewie and some nice characters that I wish could have stayed longer in the movie instead of being replaced with the **** characters. A lot of people complained about the feminist bull**** in the movie, and while that is true, I found it to not be as bad as in previous films. Sure, the #MeToo droid is annoying and you have the obligatory stronk brown female freedom fighter, but they are not that much in this movie and Han is still the hero of his story. Still, I would say avoid this movie. You are not missing umuch and maybe Disney will finnally fire Kennedy if this flops.

Younger, less experienced, and more idealistic, but Solo nonetheless. His performance totally captures the feeling Harrison Ford brought to the dashing rogue way back in the original trilogy. Also, Donald Glover is totally Lando Calrissian, but that's not quite as significant here.

The story is about Han Solo finding his place in the galaxy far, far way. It was a lot of fun seeing some of the events that helped shape him into the cynical smuggler we know and love. Especially since the set pieces were so exciting. Yeah, we basically know how things will turn out for him in the moment so there's no real sense of danger, but that doesn't mean too much overall when there's a great sense of humor, stunning visuals, impressive action, and new side-characters to worry about.

Things are awkwardly juxtaposed together at first as the film tries very hard to rush through Solo's early years in order to get to the plot at hand. It's kind of awkward to witness everyone just sort of give him chances for no real reason other than that's the only way the writing would hold together. Kind of makes the whole thing feel a little cheap and somewhat thrown together. It's also in need of a better villain. However, unlike the series' previous anthology film, Rogue One, these issues are a little more forgivable as I was actually able to care about the characters this time around just like I would in any numbered Star Wars film. I mean it's Han and Chewbacca, how could I not?

It's a fine side-entry into the canon. One that shows how the title character got all of his cool toys, met his best friend, swindled the most suave dude in the galaxy, and leaves the door open for more potential filler films to cover the time gaps in the Star Wars mythos with more potentially interesting stories. The story is a little weak and offers no real surprises, but this is still a must watch for Star Wars fans. The soundtrack alone is so nostalgic and at the end of the day this is just a very fun movie. That proved enough for me to put with it's somewhat insignificant prequel nature.

Don't believe the whiney so-called fanboys that are trashing this movie, or even those saying the movie is "passable." If you grew up with the original trilogy, you'll really appreciate that child-like joy this movie brings back to Star Wars. It's smaller story than we're used to from Star Wars, but I never knew where the story was going. There a lot more surprises than I expected from a prequel where I knew at least Han, Lando and Chewie would all be okay in the end.

Everybody I know that's seen has loved it, even casual SW Fans. Go check it out!

On one hand I hate the direction Disney is taking the franchise and absolutely despise the Sequel films. But if I'm to punish movies I don't like then its only fair I praise movies I do like. And I did have a really great time with this flick.

It really is a Heist/Gangster film in a Space Opera setting. We see brilliant shots of the Corellian Slums, a muddy warzone on Mimban, and some really excellent sequences of the Falcon in space.

The humor was much more subtle and appropriate than anything from the sequel films. The characters, though a little one-dimensional at times make much more sense. The empire is portrayed as vast and intimidating whilst also not having infinite reach. Callbacks and references to the other films and to the EU (surprisingly enough) occur often but they rarely stand out as forced.

While the future of the franchise is pretty much a lost cause post-Endor, both of the side-stories have managed to seriously impress me despite extremely low expectations. If you're boycotting Disney for the travesties they've committed with Episodes 7 & 8 then I can understand not wanting to see another Disney-produced film. This idea cuts both ways however, if Lucasfilm start making Star Wars movies you actually like and you don't see them, it'll send the message that people really do want the adventures of MaRey Sue vs Cry-lo Ren and the Hitler Youth repeated every year for all time. Be consistent, or you'll never get the Star Wars universe you want to see.

EverySolo is a good star wars story, but not a good film. Where Rogue One excelled at referencing the original films in its cinematography and editing, Solo simply forces its characters to speak dialogue exclusively from the originals. Every stormtrooper says 'move along' over and over, Han keeps telling everyone never to tell him the odds and a droid that has just been gambling complains about not being served. The first few are fun, after that it gets ridiculous. The music especially is very often inconsistent with the tone of what is happening on screen and feels awfully out of place. This, combined with a plot that is never quite sure where it is going and characters which, aside from Solo and Qira are largely expendable and or inconsequential makes for a hollow adventure that never quite manages to be fun. The poorly handled sequel set up is the final nail in the coffin of a mess of a film made from what must have been, at some point a very capable and entertaining script. Expand

Yeah, Aldenreich is no Ford, but he is a likable lead. The best part is the relationship between him and Chewie, totally natural. Also, this is probably the first time Chewbacca has been fully utilized. As practically everyone else has said, Glover is a terrific Lando Calrissian. The younger version of him is even more delightuflly egotistical. The MVP of new characters is Han's robot co-pilot. I won't spoil too much about her, but she may the most unique droid in Star Wars.

I liked this but I do rank it behind the other recent SW films. (Though definitely leaps above the prequel trilogy.) The film does contain an overglut of characters and set changes. The ending is a bit subdued, too. There is one part of this film that will confuse those who never watched the Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels cartoon series. I mean I give the writers credit for maintaining the continuity of the canon, but it is at the disadvantage of the casual viewer. Lastly, the biggest problem of the film is how darkly shot most of the film is. The lighting doesn't even match the tone.

Unlike the darker and more desperate tone of other recent Star Wars movies, this one had a fun and hopeful air about it. Alden was not like Ford at all but his portrayal of young Han was so earnest that I was completely won over by the end of the first speeder scene. His chemistry with Qi'ra was so real and touching. And Donald Glover was beyond perfect as Lando. Overall it's such a breath of fresh air for the franchise and I can't wait for the sequel, fingers crossed.

"Oh,look! Another Star Wars movie. Unite the angry Fanbase and give them a notepad to write everything wrong with it so that they'll make their own rant! (and to give CinemaSins a run for their buck)”
This is how most of this so called “Fanbase” works, whenever one of these movies comes out (*POP* I liked Last Jedi).
But when we talk about Solo A Star Wars Story,I can say that it was a fun ride, aside from the Development Hell this movie went through. Going into it,I was expecting a Heist Movie with the same veins of a Steven Soderbergh one,and it was that, with some haunting places,a John Powell score that never disappoints and (almost) great casting.
You may want to cool down your expectations if you want to see a good story with the big spectacle we usually expect from a franchise like Star Wars.
From beginning to end,it just felt like a great big action sequence (of 2h15) that takes place in several places with a story that's easy enough to follow, given that the movie doesn't know when to spend its time on either the friendship between Solo and Chewie or the big heist with Woody Harrelson as Beckett.
Speaking of the actors,I thought Alden Ehrenrich could have been good as Solo...If the script didn't give him some of the most cringey Fanbase moments of all time.
“I hate you” “I know”
Although the secondary cast was a better ensemble than I thought it was going to be.
Emilia Clarke as Qi’ Ra? Good!
Jon Favreau as Rio? Kind of annoying, but still good.
Paul Bettany as Evil Vision? Boy...
But Childish Gambino AKA Donald Glover as Lando Carlissian STEALS the movie.
Not only that, but also the massive wonderment of a score by John Powell that, just like Ice Age The Meltdown and Robots, makes it for another standout that carries the movie, accompanied by a courageous theme by John Williams.
Oh,and big special effects and one of the greatest title card appearances of all-time (Thor Ragnarok and Guardians Of The Galaxy BEWARE).
You can call this the “Fun Star Wars” if you go into it with the right amount of expectations. Don't expect an Empire Strikes Back, but also don't expect a Rogue One,although a better movie than the prequels you can. All in all, sure, never tell him the odds...At some point.

Occasionally the charisma of Harrison Ford shines through, but only for brief moments. In contrast, Star Wars drips from every pore of the movie. The worlds are very well implemented and have that filthy and worn look one would expect from a Star Wars movie, especially in the Underworld. The humor was decent and did not always work, the fan service and the easter eggs were well dosed. The emotional moments usually do not work, because one is missing the reference to the figures. In addition, the film lacks tension, but that's the problem with a prequel. We know who will survive in any case. The supporting roles were very well staffed, especially Donald Glover stands out. I just had a problem with Emilia Clarke - she works in GoT, but here she did not make a good impression. For me, there was only one really disturbing and completely unnecessary scene - how Han Solo got its name. Facepalm. All in all, I had fun and was well entertained, I did not expect anything more, so I am satisfied with the movie. After one-time seeing I feel in any case better than after Episode 8. Expand

Wow, I've never seen a fanbase THIS toxic. Not a single review that is under a 6 has valid arguments to why this movie was ''bad''. The only thing I'm seeing is: Kathleen Kennedy ruined Star Wars, SJW Propaganda and Disney ruining Star Wars. So lets get to why I liked it. Solo: A Star Wars Story is something new and refreshing. It's so much better than I expected. The story is amazing, Jon and Lawrence Kasdan have done an amazing job. Despite the movie having a directorial change it still feels very coherent and well put together. The movie was great fun all around. SPOILERS AHEAD. The reveal of Darth Maul (Sam Witwer/Ray Park) was surprising and it felt right. He fits right into the story and I really want to see those other 2 Solo movies to find out what happens next with the Crimson Dawn. The surprises of Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) turning on Han (Alden Ehrenreich) was an amazing twist. Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo) is not what I expected, I expected it to be bad. He was great in the role as Han Solo and Lando was also excellently played by Donald Glover. Overall I was less divisive about Solo: A Star Wars Story than The Last Jedi and it was a very fun movie in general. Score by John Powell was also great, especially Enfys Nest's/the Savareen's theme.

With all of the bandwagon hate going on due to the way The Last Jedi played out as well as the treatment of beloved characters, the fans have it in for this movie.

How wrong they are. This movie is one of the best Star Wars films I've seen in a long while. I enjoyed it more than Rogue One (For real, it was a downer). In fact, the past three SW movies have been complete downers as we've seen characters killed off one-by-one, again and again. It's been pretty depressing.

I think we needed this movie. It was fun. It was thrilling. It had that classic SW feel, and man, the aliens were incredibly well done as well as the sets and the effects.

The cast is spot-on as well, and although I never thought anybody else could be Han, Alden Ehrenreich did a dang good job. Lando? Okay, Glover was chanelling Billy Dee pretty much. Chewie was finally more than just big hairy window dressing, and the rest of the characters did a bang up job with their respective roles.

Man. I just cannot explain how happy I was walking out of the theater. And that reveal at the end? I can't wait for the sequel.

Do yourself a favor if you're a SW fan and ignore the fan hate. They are completely wrong. See Solo, and save this movie. It's worth it.

(I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars)
Other Star Wars films typically become extremely boring with just explosions and lasers filling the screen. If more Star Wars films contained more smaller scaled emotionally charged battles between characters (like VaderVsLuke, Obi-WanVsAnakin), I could get behind more of them. Solo: A Star Wars Story brings the franchise a step closer to the best aspects of Star Wars. Now my rankings for the films are: EmpireSB > RevengeotS > SOLO. BOOYAH.

After the ham-fisted fan-fiction B.S. of THE FORCE AWAKENS, a bit of integrity and hope for the Star Wars universe was briefly bought back by the ROGUE ONE. A further tad of encouragement was brought by the THE LAST JEDI (which was certainly a better and more thoughtful movie than THE FORCE AWAKENS) that made some small steps towards perhaps making this new iteration of the Star Wars franchise worth some time investment. Alas, it seems that Disney can't consistently hire a set of writers and directors to come even close to the coherency and magnitude of Lucas' work, as was sadly evident by this mess of the SOLO movie. There seems to be an agenda of hate surrounding Star Wars films today, and this bias is pretty evident in user reviews across many sites. We remember Star Wars films from our youth and rate today's films through a lens of nostalgia that can rarely be matched. Everyone wants the next film to be better than the last. Put it all in perspective and just enjoy some good characters, spectacular effects, and a few surprises. The Star Wars hallmark of strange, humorous aliens in hilarious situations is intact.

Of Alden Ehrenreich, well, he is not Harrison Ford any more than Roger Moore was Sean Connery. He does a fine job, and that, more than anything, is the issue. The role demands something very special, and Ehrenreich only hits that mark occasionally. But to say that his performance ruins the film is hyperbole in the extreme. Just more hater talk. And Emilia Clarke??? WOW...She is fantastic. Thandie Newton is under utilized in the extreme but in a way that only makes sense if you really pay attention later in the film. Pay attention to dialogue...

In the end, Solo is solid. Judged on its own, solo if you will, It's great, non-stop fun. In the franchise of Star Wars it pales against the brilliance of TESB or Rogue One, but then again, everything does.

You'll want more of Donny Glover and less of L3. And that is a very good thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent movie if you have ADS and are into new movies, you know, those generic, all look-the-same feel-the-same-movies. Switch the characters for those of Guardians of the Galaxy and the effect is exactly the same. While it was well directed and put together, it suffers from predictable plot, generic action (except for a couple of sequences) and very boring acting in general. Alden is not a bad actor but c'mon, we all knew Ford's shoes are really hard to fill, and almost impossible in the case of Han Solo. The character is so powerful, it defined and almost typecast Ford's career. The villain here is so generic, "I get aroused when I kill" James Bond mean guy. We also have, of course, yet another posh girl that even looks a lot like Felicity Jones, easily defeating 6 foot men and all. The feminist (droidist?) copilot is rather insufferable, very out of place, it's meant to be funny but it is certainly not. The sexual innuendo "she" plays with Lando is just too much for Star Wars. Then of course is the fact that Lucasfilm has decided to checklist every minutia from the OT, so Han is given his surname in an unceremonious and rushed fashion by an imperial agent, he gets his blaster from Beckett and the ship from Lando. Talk about the deconstruction of the Alpha-Male of the OT. Then the ridiculous but very progressive idea that one of the toughest characters is a 16 year old girl, because they can do everything, right? Even command pirates and raiders. Then comes the subject of cinematography. Enough with the dark movies, enough. Go watch the OT and what made it feel like it is another planet. The new movies suffer from the gray, unsaturated, Netflix-show syndrome, it is depressing (hence, it's for millennials) Disney thinks that hiring Oscar winning cinematographers will give these movies a touch of je ne sais quoi, but no, it just makes them harder to look at. Then comes the final cameo, which by all means is just Disney trying to do fan service full blown. There's no reason for it, no meaning behind it, it messes continuity and future movies, and I love Darth Maul, but this was just awful. you can't ask SW fans to leave their brains at the theater door, we are much more intelligent and discerning than that, and as it gets harder to get people to theaters, Lucasfilm and all the SJW working there really have to try harder if they want my hard earned cash. Is it passable, yes... is it great - not by a long shot. It has a few fleeting moments of greatness, but overall the best way to see this film is with tempered expectations.

It's very inoffensive, safe, and by-the-numbers. So if you got riled-up by The Last Jedi, this won't annoy at you in any way because it's a simple story that logically goes from A, to B, to C - therefore it could be considered a bit bland by some.

But overall it was watchable, and at least I didn't leave the cinema thinking the Star Wars brand had been tarnished (again). All the actors did their job, but no one was a particular stand-out; they just complimented each other (and the script) well.

At the end of the day, it put a smile on my face a couple of times, and that's never a bad thing when it comes to "modern" Star Wars films. Do you need to see it at the cinema? Not really... so that says a lot.

Solo cashes in on fan service, Star Wars feeling.
Acting is good to very good. Film is enjoyable as a whole.
Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim. Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim.

Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Where the film actively fails is in portraying a Han Solo that is vaguely resembling the force of nature that the Han Solo had in the first movie, A New Hope.

Poised precipitously between good and evil, compentent, savvy, street-wise Han Solo has been now preceded by a harmless, with heart of gold, big, blustering, blundering, superiorily lucky, impulsive, naive, boisterous, ever optimistic big child.

A space faring Peter Pan that fails to grow up. Or where he grows up is in one final act at the end of the movie where he finally commits a, later trademark, evil deed.

Han Solo here is a big child, somebody who would be lost without help.

So my disappointment with Solo is that it paints a picture that is a caricature of the "A New Hope" Solo without leaving many points to refine.

When transposed directly into the chronologically later story instead of the Character every one wanted to play now Han becomes the most harmless sorry piece on the storyboard.

Maybe a more telling name would be Solo: A Star Wars Character(s) wrecking story

Rather disappointing.

Once again, a new film taking place within the Star Wars universeThere wasn't anything that bad about Solo. It's just that there wasn't anything that good either. I don't think I've ever been more indifferent about a movie after seeing it. Once again, a new film taking place within the Star Wars universe feels nothing like Star Wars, and once again a film in the Star Wars universe has an obvious political message within it. Those are likely my biggest complaints about it. The acting was okay all around, and Donald Glover as Lando was pretty good, though there are a few things the writers did with the character that I didn't like. I don't think it would be fair to ask Ehrenreich to do a better job than Ford as Solo, so don't be disappointed when he doesn't.
The story was quite average, and in the beginning it often feels as though the goalpost keeps moving in terms of what the major story arc will be. However as the movie develops it streamlines into a decent plot. I wasn't a big fan of everything they did in the movie, between the political messaging, at times sloppy story, and overall lack of Star Wars atmosphere. But this movie does have its moments, and I would say is probably worth seeing.

I went in with low expectations thanks to TLJ. I didn't watch any of the Solo trailers and I didn't read any news about the movie beforehand. This movie was made for the existing Star Wars fanbase and I enjoyed it because of that. I felt like TLJ was made to gather a new Star Wars fanbase while letting the past die, killing it if it has to.

I have always had a difficult time figuring out exactly what it is about Star Wars that I love so much. There are so many elements to the movies, I'm not sure I can put my finger on just one of them. If I had to choose, I would say the movie's ability to take me to a galaxy far, far away is the core element. The Last Jedi didn't do that for me, but Solo did. I love the feeling of wonder and fantasy. The "lived in" environment, full of used machinery and living spaces, is ever present. We get a better feel for how the Empire has truly permeated its presence throughout the galaxy. We get to see how lawlessness reigns in some galactic territories. We get to see new and familiar alien species. We get to see planets that are mentioned in previous Star Wars films, but not seen in a movie until now. For the most part, I felt like I was in the Star Wars universe throughout this film. No, the film isn't perfect, but that's true of all the previous Star Wars films so far. I didn't feel like this movie was trashing Star Wars, it was merely building on what already exists. Considering the setbacks Lucasfilm faced during production, I think this movie turned out quite well. I never really wanted a movie about Han Solo, but I'm happy with what we got.

It isn’t anywhere near as ambitious as THE LAST JEDI, comforting as THE FORCE AWAKENS or great at giving us closure to storylines like ROGUE ONE, but for what it had to do, and all it had working against it, I’d say things turned out alright.

Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job as Han because he doesn't try to portray "Harrison Ford as Han Solo" but Han the character himself. The supporting cast is also great.

The movie starts off slow in the first hour or so, but by the third act you're fully caught up in what will happen next. The driving forces of the movie are the characters; Han himself is still the sarcastic scroudrel we know and love, but untarnished by a life of smuggling; Lando Calrissian is a great comic relief character; Tobias Beckett is the bitter smuggler and thief; Qi'ra proves to be much more than "Han's love interest" as someone who will do anything to survive; L3-37 is a droid determined to start an uprising. If you're a dedicated Star Wars fan, you'll be delighted at all the references to the Star Wars universe; Mandalorian armor is seen, dozens of alien races we've seen in other movies have cameos, there are a LOT of hidden nods, and the character reveal at the end is FANTASTIC. (No, he's not supposed to be dead; the animated Clone Wars show explains that.)

If you're a Star Wars fan, this movie is a must-see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solo: A Star Wars Story was absolutely FANTASTIC. I'm actually in disbelief at how good it was! Wooooooo! As someone who loves The Force Awakens, enjoys Rogue One for what it is and really is not at all a fan of The Last Jedi, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this movie!

This was classic Lawerence Kasdan dialogue with great character moments given to every major character. Side note he also wrote Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and a few other small films - catch the sarcasm? Speaking of which, Solo reminded me in many ways of Raiders of the Lost Ark and yes - Alden Ehrenreich was, in fact, Han Solo. The pacing of this movie was perfect, the score was beautiful, especially the love theme for Qi'Ra -- just gorgeous. Wooooooooooo!!!

Okay, I may be on a Star Wars high at the moment! Crazy enough, I actually really hope to see some sort of sequel to this movie which follows Han and Chewbacca. That's how much I bought Ehrenreich as Han and Chewie as well Chewie. Go check it out - give Solo chance! Oh! Last thing - there is a tie in I did not see coming at all which perfectly sets up another spin-off film featuring an actor who maybe, just might also be in a film about talking bear who loves honey!!

Okay, repeat after me, children: "This film is irredeemable garbage."

Personally, my standards are low. I enjoy movies of even the lowest quality, but this? This is an insult. I won't even bother with trying to cover the horrendous plot, the random and 5-minute screentime characters with zero development and the horrible, horrible acting. The only thing that kept me from walking out of the theatre was knowing that this was part of the Star Wars franchise, so I tried to stay being invested in it. Guess what?

I failed.

This movie should not have ever existed. Goddamnit Disney.
