It's no "Empire Strikes Back" but it's the closest they've come since. The characters are so-so (but let's face it, so were the originals), but there are no glaring narrative issues and, most importantly, it is not riddled with plot holes. I'm not sure why everyone seems to think it's not as good as the other Disney releases but, in my opinion, it's the only one that was not outright bad. Expand

The movie was somewhat like rouge one and had a very entertaining plot. It was fun to watch exciting and had some good Star Wars lore. The actor was one of the worst part of it, seeing someone play Han Solo besides Harrison Ford was sad and I wish it was the story right before a new hope not earlier. But overall there was good acting, exciting moments, a bit to many plot switches and an over all recipe for an exciting movie. Expand

Yeah, Aldenreich is no Ford, but he is a likable lead. The best part is the relationship between him and Chewie, totally natural. Also, this is probably the first time Chewbacca has been fully utilized. As practically everyone else has said, Glover is a terrific Lando Calrissian. The younger version of him is even more delightuflly egotistical. The MVP of new characters is Han's robot co-pilot. I won't spoil too much about her, but she may the most unique droid in Star Wars.

I liked this but I do rank it behind the other recent SW films. (Though definitely leaps above the prequel trilogy.) The film does contain an overglut of characters and set changes. The ending is a bit subdued, too. There is one part of this film that will confuse those who never watched the Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels cartoon series. I mean I give the writers credit for maintaining the continuity of the canon, but it is at the disadvantage of the casual viewer. Lastly, the biggest problem of the film is how darkly shot most of the film is. The lighting doesn't even match the tone.

Although this was a film that no one really asked for OR needed, i found it a very welcome addition. lots of very nice nods to the original trilogy and plenty or easter eggs.

the acting was great, and dialogue a lot less cringeworthy than your classic Star Wars movie, and this was expected with the all star cast. Alden Ehrenreich surprised me and actually had me believing he was a young Han Solo. There were lots of subtle facial expressions and acting techniques that you could tell that Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover had mastered to be true to the original characters portrayed by Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams.

There were plenty of nice surprises in this film, including a major one that shocked me in the 3rd act that presents the opportunity for a Han Solo sequel, or perhaps even setting the ground work for the next standalone 'Star Wars Story'. Although this standalone film doesn't necessarily fill as many gaps as Rogue One did, this is still a great standalone heist movie that is a great deal of fun and hits all the Star Wars fan needs. This will definitely be added to my Star Wars Marathon watch list (between RotS and Rouge One) when it comes out on Blu-ray.

I thought the story, action, and acting were all great. Above all I love the way the Star Wars Story films continue to explore seemingly marginal characters like the Stormtroopers or droids or wookies and expands on their lives in sometimes surprising ways.

On the other hand, this was a fun story that provided more background to Han, Chewie, and Lando. While not nearly as good as some of the other Star Wars films, Solo still managed to give a good plot and surprisingly good acting (we missed you as Han, Harrison Ford). However, I give kudos to Ehrenreich for the amazing job playing the galaxy’s most likable smuggler. All in all, Solo was a nice movie that wasn’t bad, although it felt like it was a little too long. I'm far from claiming that it was the best movie in the franchise, it wasn't, but it definitely was a great fun, western-in-space style, with some typical 'gangster-movie' tropes and just a right amount of humor. Some characters have been underused (Val, Rio, Vos was just... there and that's all), but other covered up for that (Lando, Beckett, Han (Alden definitely exceeded my expectations), Chewie). Overall, I went to the cinema expecting something average at most and left the building baffled. Plus, adding a lot of smaller and bigger easter eggs and one, very special cameo. I'm shocked by this myself, but... I would like to see a sequel very much. Really. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You have to remember that these spin-off movies are not going to be in the same vein as the original trilogy, and honestly that is what makes Solo GREAT! It a story of who Han was before we met him in the Mos Eisley cantina. Granted, some things were over-played *cough cough the gravity hole*, it was truly enjoyable throughout and made me wanting more when the closing credits rolled. Donald Glover's performance as Lando was brilliant and the female powerhouses of Emillia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Pheobe Waller-Bridge drove the plot along. Once you get over the fact that Solo (amongst planned spin-offs for Obi Wan and Boba Fett) aren't supposed to be told in the same fashion as the original trilogy, Solo was exciting and enticing from the moment that blue scroll appeared to the final credits and the perfect start to a summer of fantastic movies. Or are boycotting because of reason x,y,x. Haters are gonna hate because they hate every time a Star Wars movie isn’t The Empire Strikes Back, clearly the best of the lot, A film which people forget was assaulted by critics when it came out, is now the unattainable height by which all Star Wars movies are unfairly measured. Is this movie that good? Of course not, no movie is that good and never will be. Accept this fact and stop depriving yourself of the possibility of enjoyment. My goodness. Do you need to check your expectations at the door? You might if you are expecting Empire or a life-changing moment in your life. If on the other hand you are a person who can appreciate the good in something without all this absolutism...."Its the best ever" vs "It destroyed star wars and my life forever"...and you can just go see a movie in a universe you love, with characters you want to see. Then you have a great treat in store for you. And that is not to take anything away from this film. It works exceptionally well more often than not. This movie isn’t perfect, but it is a Star Wars movie to its core, probably more so than some of the new trilogy movies. I had so much fun at this movie. As I watched this movie I could feel my childhood self screaming with glee in my head while my adult self yipped with joy aloud. This movie succeeds in a lot of ways, most of them. For someone to say this movie is rotten is just laughable to me. The look of the movie alone is worth the price of admission. Fortunately you get so much more. This is the funniest Star Wars movie, but still a very action packed movie. I’ve heard some people say it had “slow” parts. I guess, but I think some of my favorite moments were just hanging out on the Falcon, shooting the breeze for a few minutes with these characters I love. The moments where i could just be allowed to float in this world without the story being crammed at me like sometimes it is in blockbuster movies, were wonderful. The beginning is a little rocky, but 15 mins in and it starts to find its footing. Halfway through the second act I felt like I was inside an expanded universe comic. It was really a fun time. I think this movie is going to age really well. It has some scenes in it which are the best of any SW movie, even the original trilogy. Don’t listen to the haters. This is a quality adventure that was really needed. I haven't had this much fun in a movie in a long time. One of my favorites immediately and it expands the universe in great ways. Expand

It's really hard to see this movie as a story about young Han Solo, despite the script keeps throwing reminders at us that this IS a Han Solo movie.

The main problem, to me, is the casting. Neither Han Solo nor Lando look anything like what they looked in the Original Trilogy, and that's pretty much a critical fail on part of the casting team. Both actors do a good job, though, yet without managing to fill the boots they were supposed to. Hell, in a couple of scenes even Emilia Clarke remembered how to act!

Furthermore, there are a couple of huge plot holes, such as Dryden asking them to act in secret because no one must connect him with their mission, and then sending his very-well-known-by-pretty-much-half-the-galaxy right-hand person with them, to make sure they see the job through.

That said, the movie is a good one, and a good Star Wars story, with all the classic stuff you might want. Witty lines, bad luck, bad luck, some plot twists, some light feelsy stuff, lasers, smugglers, the Empire, and so forth.

I had a very bad feeling about this movie and zero expectations given its troubled production history and terrible casting choices, and I ended up enjoying this movie way more than I enjoyed The Last Jedi. So much so, that I went to the theatre twice.

Verdict: Release the Space Kraken!

Of course it's a trip to watch our protagonists stand up against seemingly impossible scenarios, but I start to disconnect when one unstoppable CGI machine stands up to a slightly more stoppable CGI machine, defeating its opponent and leveling one of our major cities in the process (though the massive civilian death toll always seems to somehow be avoided, or at least not carry enough weight to merit discussion). The action and adventure genre is generally designed for escapism, a chance for the audience to forget about life's little cuts and bruises.

Solo: A Star Wars Story delivers on such escapism. Little background is necessary for the title character, a fact respected by Ron Howard as his film launches us straight into Han's peril. We know exactly what we need to know: Han is in trouble and needs to escape. A curveball is thrown when we meet Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra, Han's apparent love interest in his former life. There is no plot to save the galaxy or to avenge some unknown character's demise; Han simply wants to create a better life for himself and Qi'ra. While not particularly ambitious in scope or storytelling, Solo focuses on the same elements that drive A New Hope into the hearts of its fans: fun, engaging entertainment via a simple but original story about some complex but ultimately relatable and lovable characters. Howard's addition to the Star Wars universe succeeds due to its respect for the title character. The prequels prove that changing existing characters' personalities can be disastrous. The sequels often rely on regression and nostalgia, not just in humor or imagery but in story itself, which makes it hard for a viewer to view the most recent story as anything but a callback to the original films. Let's face it: anyone who experienced Luke, Han, and Leia's adventures at a young age cannot accept any major changes to these characters, but it can also be insulting to long-time fans to introduce new characters that end up shadowing the original adventures a little too closely. In a universe as developed as the Star Wars universe, a balancing act between originality and familiarity, is tricky but all too important. A new installment, especially a film about early adventures through the eyes of one of the most developed characters in the Star Wars universe, needs enough stakes to engage the audience but not enough impact to make the audience question "Why did Han not talk about these crazy adventures in the later films?"

Solo makes no effort to change Han's ambitions, background, or general character traits. This film is clearly not designed to challenge its audience's beliefs or cause them to consider Star Wars in a new way. Solo takes us on an adventure that features both some of the new and some of the old, and, while it breaks no new ground for the Star Wars franchise, the film allows us to have fun with our beloved Han Solo without any greater implications for the galaxy for the first time.

The Kessel Run

Solo: A Star Wars Story (80/100)

Introducing Chewie Score(10/10)

Introducing the Millenium Falcon Score(10/10)

Tie Fighters in the Maelstrom Score(0/5) They would never do this(they shouldn’t have followed them into the asteroid field in TESB either.)

Going back to save your friends score(10/10) This was the moment when the movie became more than a 3 star experience.

Kessel Run Score(5/10) As far as I’m aware there is no canon of Star Wars reference data which contains the official explanation of the use of “parsec” to measure the trip. Whether it’s a boast about the ships speed or it’s navigational technology is still up in the air. And Han’s boast in Episode IV is about the ship’s speed so the theories about the ship’s navigation make no sense. This would have been the perfect place to establish a canonical explanation.

“Less than 12 parsecs” Score(0/5) So is he rounding down or not?

Good Guy and Bad Guys Score(10/10) A excellent cast of characters, expecially the new ones. Much better new characters than in Episodes VII and VIII.

Lovable Droid Score(8/10) No R2d2’s here but still good.

Metanarrative Score(7/10) Still trialing the MCU here but making progress. I’ve been surprised how well I’ve liked the “gap story” movies. But they’ve still never reached the quality they had in Episodes IV – VI. It does seem that they’ll be continuing this story in later “gap story” movies.

Romance Score(Guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl back)(20/20) A nice take on the classic storyline.

80/100

Solid enough action adventure, in a very familiar looking Star Wars universe. Lots of action set pieces and locations, but nothing new in terms of a story.

Younger, less experienced, and more idealistic, but Solo nonetheless. His performance totally captures the feeling Harrison Ford brought to the dashing rogue way back in the original trilogy. Also, Donald Glover is totally Lando Calrissian, but that's not quite as significant here.

The story is about Han Solo finding his place in the galaxy far, far way. It was a lot of fun seeing some of the events that helped shape him into the cynical smuggler we know and love. Especially since the set pieces were so exciting. Yeah, we basically know how things will turn out for him in the moment so there's no real sense of danger, but that doesn't mean too much overall when there's a great sense of humor, stunning visuals, impressive action, and new side-characters to worry about.

Things are awkwardly juxtaposed together at first as the film tries very hard to rush through Solo's early years in order to get to the plot at hand. It's kind of awkward to witness everyone just sort of give him chances for no real reason other than that's the only way the writing would hold together. Kind of makes the whole thing feel a little cheap and somewhat thrown together. It's also in need of a better villain. However, unlike the series' previous anthology film, Rogue One, these issues are a little more forgivable as I was actually able to care about the characters this time around just like I would in any numbered Star Wars film. I mean it's Han and Chewbacca, how could I not?

It's a fine side-entry into the canon. One that shows how the title character got all of his cool toys, met his best friend, swindled the most suave dude in the galaxy, and leaves the door open for more potential filler films to cover the time gaps in the Star Wars mythos with more potentially interesting stories. The story is a little weak and offers no real surprises, but this is still a must watch for Star Wars fans. The soundtrack alone is so nostalgic and at the end of the day this is just a very fun movie. That proved enough for me to put with it's somewhat insignificant prequel nature.

A predictable but likeable movie. The story is predictable and it flows exactly how you'd expect, has the usual Star Wars stuff but it doesn't have much humour; though Solo's charm makes up for this.

I never for a second believed that I was actually watching the real Han Solo. So I ended up not really caring for anyone but the central characters if even that. Just a pretty entertaining action movie if you're familiar with the whole SW setting. If you're not that into SW then a 6 is generous enough. Too many things in the story that just didn't add up. Quite funny at times but not something you just have to go see. If you still remember the names of at least some of the side characters the day after you've seen this movie, then I tip my hat to you. If you can instead seperate this movie from Han Solo and watch it as an extended universe/smuggler/anti hero movie, then it does actualy come to life alot more. Some nice tie ins to the SW universe and some very cool scenes put this movie ahead (atleast in my opinion) of all the Disney Star wars films to date.

Putting it bluntly this movie should never of been about Han Solo, it's simply not good enough and to try and capture the feeling of Harrison Ford as Han Solo was never going to work

Could do alot better but ultimately could of done a hell of alot worse.

Because, when I heard of the many production woes and trials that occurred along the way in crafting this film, I was sure the final product would be tired, boring, and devoid of meaning. And though it would still take a lot to convince me that this movie absolutely needed to happen, it's most certainly not boring or tired. In fact, director Ron Howard's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is - at times - The rip-roaring, smooth-talking space actioner I was hoping it could be. And aside from a few head-scratcher creative choices here and there, I think it works overall as a film. Expand

There seems to be an agenda of hate surrounding Star Wars films today, and this bias is pretty evident in user reviews across many sites. We remember Star Wars films from our youth and rate today's films through a lens of nostalgia that can rarely be matched. Everyone wants the next film to be better than the last. Put it all in perspective and just enjoy some good characters, spectacular effects, and a few surprises. The Star Wars hallmark of strange, humorous aliens in hilarious situations is intact.

Of Alden Ehrenreich, well, he is not Harrison Ford any more than Roger Moore was Sean Connery. He does a fine job, and that, more than anything, is the issue. The role demands something very special, and Ehrenreich only hits that mark occasionally. But to say that his performance ruins the film is hyperbole in the extreme. Just more hater talk. And Emilia Clarke??? WOW...She is fantastic. Thandie Newton is under utilized in the extreme but in a way that only makes sense if you really pay attention later in the film. Pay attention to dialogue...

In the end, Solo is solid. Judged on its own, solo if you will, It's great, non-stop fun. In the franchise of Star Wars it pales against the brilliance of TESB or Rogue One, but then again, everything does.

You'll want more of Donny Glover and less of L3. And that is a very good thing.

The special effects, costumes, cinematography, and music are all top notch. I actually think it would have been an overall positive entry in the Disney Star Wars creations. However, there are two very blatant flaws in this movie that will cause fans to hate it. First: There is an absolutely implausible event at the very end of the movie that will have casual Star Wars fans scratching their heads and wondering what in the world the writers were thinking. The writers adopted expanded universe lore into the cinema Star Wars canon. Considering the grand majority of Star Wars fans don't watch the cartoon TV shows, the ending will cause general annoyance and bewilderment.

Second: there is an air of forced social commentary with one character in particular. While the character itself is quite funny at parts, the writers or director could have done a much better job at making the social commentary more subtle. If it were not for these two items, Solo would fall just under The Force Awakens at an 8.5/10, in my book. As it stands with those two flaws, I cannot in good conscience give it much higher than a 7. The first point is a great disservice in particular to the casual Star Wars fan.

Other Star Wars films typically become extremely boring with just explosions and lasers filling the screen. If more Star Wars films contained more smaller scaled emotionally charged battles between characters (like VaderVsLuke, Obi-WanVsAnakin), I could get behind more of them. Solo: A Star Wars Story brings the franchise a step closer to the best aspects of Star Wars. Now my rankings for the films are: EmpireSB > RevengeotS > SOLO. BOOYAH.

Solo sets itself up to be quite pointless - showing the history of a character we know all about, showing some of his feats that once again we know about (Kessel run for example).

In reality though, it's a really fun movie. It doesn't add a great deal of detail to the character, with events kicking off around the time he's already a cocky, self centered nerf herder - but it still delivers a lot of charm, character and easter eggs to keep any Star Wars fan happy. Whilst the infamous Kessel run plays a part towards the end of the film, it acts very much like a side element to their current mission and not this huge focus of the film, meaning you get to enjoy the action unfold without the worry about them pushing old references into your eyes.

The performances were great! Admittedly it did take me a couple of scenes to embrace Han, he's a special character and this is the first time we're seeing him played by someone other than Ford (outside of voice acting across various mediums) and Ehrenreich does great in the role. Donald Glover nails Lando, and around them the rest of the supporting cast make for some interesting dynamics and great set pieces.

There is 1 character who shows up that feels a bit too "on the nose" in terms of the current state of PC cinema, in reality if they were portrayed by a male it would have actually made a lot more sense and been genuinely very clever all at the same time (a film that already shows some very strong female characters, in a franchise dedicated to strong female characters it was a shame to have a parody of the "me too" movement portrayed on screen without any sense of irony)...

The story itself whilst quite simplistic at times has surprising depth when it comes to the small (but predictable) twists and turns it weaves through to the end, with some excellent references, easter eggs and cameos that I hope to see built upon in future instalments of Star Wars.

All in all I'd recommend this to any Star Wars fan, in a worst case you'll likely come out of the film thinking "well that was ok" but I think most true fans will get very excited about the easter eggs that tease what the future may hold for a young Solo, or other related movies...

As with many of this year's other action-adventure offerings, the supporting cast members outshine the lead, who, in this case, can't come close to capturing the swagger, swashbuckling and sarcasm of his predecessor. What's more, the 3D effects are virtually nonexistent, so don't waste the extra ticket fee on this nearly absent attribute. This is one best saved for when it comes to cable or DVD. Expand

Occasionally the charisma of Harrison Ford shines through, but only for brief moments. In contrast, Star Wars drips from every pore of the movie. The worlds are very well implemented and have that filthy and worn look one would expect from a Star Wars movie, especially in the Underworld. The humor was decent and did not always work, the fan service and the easter eggs were well dosed. The emotional moments usually do not work, because one is missing the reference to the figures. In addition, the film lacks tension, but that's the problem with a prequel. We know who will survive in any case. The supporting roles were very well staffed, especially Donald Glover stands out. I just had a problem with Emilia Clarke - she works in GoT, but here she did not make a good impression. For me, there was only one really disturbing and completely unnecessary scene - how Han Solo got its name. Facepalm. All in all, I had fun and was well entertained, I did not expect anything more, so I am satisfied with the movie. After one-time seeing I feel in any case better than after Episode 8. Expand

Exciting, no dull "laughs" every 5 minutes, good characters (and acting), fun surprises and over all a good scifi-western. Han Solo was younger, unexperienced and may not have known himself as good here as he does further down his storyline. So I think this is the right way to do this movie, because Han will progress! Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Review by Adam Reader. Solo a Star Wars story was a movie from Lucasfilms/Disney no one really asked for but we got anyway. Production for this movie has been from the start, with directors changing half way through production, and nearly unknown actor cast as the infamous Han Solo many people had lost all hope for the next theatrical instalment in one of the greatest fictional universes ever created, but alas this movie really surprised me. Despite what other reviewers have said I found Alden Ehrenreich a fantastic choice for the titular character. Many wanted a imitation of Harrison Ford, but Alden had the moments of charm and arrogance that comes from the galaxy’s best pilot, but still had the boyish charm that proceeds any smooth talking quick witted character. And Donald glover as Lando Calrissian may have been one of the best casting decisions in the re-booted Star Wars universe. He had the charm, wit, and screen presence Billy Dee Williams brought to the character 38 years ago in Empire Strikes Back. Chewie is always a delight on screen, and the additional characters performed by Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Paul Bettany worked well with the story and were portrayed with the usual brilliance of the actors. As far as story goes it was a fairly standard, by the books action sci-fi adventure. There was nothing particularly mind blowing or spectacular in the story telling, but if you love a good sci-fi heist movie you’ll probably enjoy this one. On top of the heist plot it also beings a lot of Star Wars cheesy nostalgia that was the be expected, teaching us about many classic Han Solo stories like the meeting of Lando, Chewie, and completing the Kessel run. There was a nice surprise cameo at the end that I did not expect. All in all it I found it a fun and enjoyable movie, but nothing out of the classic sci-fi movie tropes. The characters were enjoyable and fun to see in their pre-original trilogy days and it brought a lot of nostalgia from the galaxy far, far which I personally always enjoy

The movie narrates it's focus towards Han Solo, which is what the movie got right. Despite there were some hiccups on the Characters, and really terrible sacrifices as well. Which I am not going to tell. Overall This movie was divisive at start, however it delivers something new and intriguing despite it was from a person who we know and love from the trilogy of the Star Wars franchise. The approach of the movie was great but really wasn't necessary because the background of Han Solo really didn't gave a glimpse of enthusiasm. Expand

Everybody does bad things but they're not bad, just people trying to survive & has their good side (like in real life). It has a good persecution sequence at the beginning and some parts of the movie are exciting; you feel the aventure and the great universe of Star Wars, but sometimes it's seems to be insipid and without soul. It's fine to watch how Solo and Chewie meet for the first time. Weak villain, Paul Bettany (Dryden Vos. Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian) are good characters in general, Emilia Clarke (Qi'ra), Woody Harrelson (Beckett) and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca) do their part; some characters of this universe are pretty untapped, i hope for the next Boba Fett spin-off they have a good homage and fix well so that this universe is finished. The OST is not bad. Star Wars is not only Jedi, Sith and The Force. Expand

I think it might get an 8 if the removed the stupid droid... I hate characters in movies and games who just hurl quip after quip... I appreciate some social commentary as well if it's handled right but this was just a bit over the top. I thought the movie wasn't paced very well either. It jumps from origin story to train heist pretty fast and all of the worlds and locations are only featured briefly so they don't leave an impression. The cast did a pretty good job, especially Ehrenreich. Filling the shoes of Han Solo is an impossible task but he did a good job of showing a younger more optimistic Han. I also like that the movie has a light tone and isn't unnecessarily dark to try and create tension or something like that. All in all not bad but could have been better. Expand

"Oh,look! Another Star Wars movie. Unite the angry Fanbase and give them a notepad to write everything wrong with it so that they'll make their own rant! (and to give CinemaSins a run for their buck)”
This is how most of this so called “Fanbase” works, whenever one of these movies comes out (*POP* I liked Last Jedi).
But when we talk about Solo A Star Wars Story,I can say that it was a fun ride, aside from the Development Hell this movie went through. Going into it,I was expecting a Heist Movie with the same veins of a Steven Soderbergh one,and it was that, with some haunting places,a John Powell score that never disappoints and (almost) great casting.
You may want to cool down your expectations if you want to see a good story with the big spectacle we usually expect from a franchise like Star Wars.
From beginning to end,it just felt like a great big action sequence (of 2h15) that takes place in several places with a story that's easy enough to follow, given that the movie doesn't know when to spend its time on either the friendship between Solo and Chewie or the big heist with Woody Harrelson as Beckett.
Speaking of the actors,I thought Alden Ehrenrich could have been good as Solo...If the script didn't give him some of the most cringey Fanbase moments of all time.
“I hate you” “I know”
Although the secondary cast was a better ensemble than I thought it was going to be.
Emilia Clarke as Qi’ Ra? Good!
Jon Favreau as Rio? Kind of annoying, but still good.
Paul Bettany as Evil Vision? Boy...
But Childish Gambino AKA Donald Glover as Lando Carlissian STEALS the movie.
Not only that, but also the massive wonderment of a score by John Powell that, just like Ice Age The Meltdown and Robots, makes it for another standout that carries the movie, accompanied by a courageous theme by John Williams.
Oh,and big special effects and one of the greatest title card appearances of all-time (Thor Ragnarok and Guardians Of The Galaxy BEWARE).
You can call this the “Fun Star Wars” if you go into it with the right amount of expectations. Don't expect an Empire Strikes Back, but also don't expect a Rogue One,although a better movie than the prequels you can. All in all, sure, never tell him the odds...At some point.

The film is rather simplistic but the plot is decent and there are some good action set pieces.
One character that really stands out is Solo's gang leader's pilot droid who steals all the scenes she is in and is quite funny.
Woody harrelson plays the Ringleader straight without eccentricities which was good.
The villain was very weak .
This episode reminded me a bit of the old Firefly tv show with same kind of ships and blasters. Worth seeing .

Although I believe the acting/casting was well done, the story drags due to there really being no antagonist. Before a specific scene at the end of the film, I would have given this movie a much lower rating. This scene rejuvenated my attention and made the ending fly by. It not only sets up for a second Han movie, but also ties in the Clone Wars series/movie...finally. When Disney came out and said they were canon, it seemed like they were hesitant on touching anything to do with the prequels... until now.

I think that if you are a Star Wars fanatic, like myself, you should definitely go see this movie in theatres. My true rating for this movie is a 6.5/10, but since I have to round, I'll round up.

Not Perfect, But Decent
Solo may not be as good as the previous 3 Disney Star Wars movies (I apologise if I p*ssed anyone off by saying that), Solo is still a decent, if unnecessary prequel about Han Solo.

A lot of people seem to think it's a m movie that doesn't need to exist, and tells stories that no one needed to hear. If that's how you feel, do see it! No jedi, no mention of the force. Just a glimpse into how the scum and villains of the galaxy go about their business. It has some great funny moments, and is solidly entertaining. Is it perfect, or the best Star Wars movie ever made? No, of course not. And there are some cringeworthy scenes (how Han got his name? C'mon), but overall it's just wild ride through worlds we've never seen, with some interesting new characters. And I can't wait to learn more about Lando! Expand

The overall story can be found wanting. There are pretty much no surprises in Solo. If you've watched IV - VI, you know all about the things Solo does in this film, leaving viewers at times disinterested and even bored. Will Solo make the Kessel run? Will Solo make friends with a wookie? Will Solo end up with Qi'ra? Will Solo win the Falcon from Lando? Literally every plot point has predictable outcomes and the film suffers for it.
That said, the movie has some redeeming qualities. The acting across all fronts is superb. The dialogue is strong with characters really playing their parts well. And even though there are pretty much no surprises. solo still can be an incredibly fun film to watch as we see a young Han turning into the Solo we all know and love.

Instead of writing a review complaining about some kind of SJW agenda in Star Wars, why don't you put on a t-shirt that says 'I'm an old and embittered white male' and post a selfie. It would save time and be less of a drag to read.

As far as I'm concerned The Last Jedi earned every bit of the negative backlash it received. Solo, taken on it's own merits, is actually a decent film. It's a nice entertaining Star Wars story about how Han Solo met Chewie and got his ship. Not every Star Wars film has to be have the fate of the galaxy at stake. It's nice to see a more contained character driven story about a much smaller problem. There were a lot of little eater eggs for hardcore Star Wars fans which I absolutely loved (The bag guy knows Teras Kasi and fights with vibro knucklers. I nearly died when I saw that).

The film also appropriately addresses the Han shot first debate by canonically showing you that Han is absolutely the type of person who shoots first.
