The movie was a nice surprise. Went in with no expectations (learnt that from the last Jedi). A Solo movie was always hard to do. Alden did an oke job, but was miscast imho.

I was not able to see visually where the old directors-new director's scenes were stitched. I did see various visions of Solo as a character. Biggest problems I saw were:
- no foreshadowing of Kira's surprise change of heart at the end,

- Nothing for Solo to work against as a character. he never even gets angry in this film. If nothing for main character to overcome in his Inner Game of Life, other characters easily take over the limelight.

Couldn't really fault it to be honest. 2 of the most beloved characters from my childhood being fleshed out. You can't go wrong.

Since that unfortunate cleansing Star WarsThis is the best Star Wars movie that Disney has made so far and let me tell you why: I am a long time Star Wars fan that enjoyed the Expanded Universe stuff before it was wiped out by Disney. Since that unfortunate cleansing Star Wars hasn't felt like Star Wars anymore. The sequel movies are weird because the feature character I know (or thought I knew) and they have the Force and familiar looking fighters and spaceships, nothing else is familiar. All of the planets are new. None of the 100s of aliens from the previous movies are seen in the background. None of the history is there except only stuff from the previous Lucas movies. Rogue One was a little better but only because it took place in a familiar time period during the rebellion right before A New Hope. It was almost like this was a whole different universe with The Force, X-wings and Death Stars thrown in.
Well, Solo finally has me hopeful for the future of these movies. This is the universe that I have been falling in love with since the mid 90s with the comics, novels and video games. You finally get to see on the big silver screen tons of things that you only could read about or at best see in a cartoon. The planets are all familiar, ranging from Corellia to Kessel. There are even mentions of legendary places like Coronet City and Carida Academy. Decades old EU material is finally brought into the new canon like CorSec, Corellian Hounds and so much more. Then there are even the connections to the Clone Wars cartoon like Mimban, the Pyke Syndicate and yes... even Darth freakin Maul. This is the Star Wars I know. I was surprised how much of this movie I loved that kept me smiling. I have a feeling once more people get to catch this movie after it leaves theaters that it will grow in popularity after the hate dies down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying hated TLJ, plotholes everywhere. Had reservations when i saw the metacritic score. DONT BE! Solo is solid, lotta good action, well paced, some iconic scenes, does a great job filling a great mans shoes. Even Harrelson doesnt blow the movie. Go see it, lotta Han & Chewy, with cool Lando scenes. Ron Howard should direct more and solid story from Kasdan. Up there with Rogue One but with better pacing. The critics that praised TLJ but going warmish on this one are the real problem, its in the top 5 SW movies easy. Expand

I'm not a dedicated Star Wars fan. I haven't seen every movie, or ready any novels, or geeked out with friends about any of it. (I did love the CRPGs "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" I&II, but that's about it.)
It should tell you something, then, that I had such a great time watching "Solo." While some familiarity with Star Wars is helpful, this movie doesn't just rely on its brand. "Solo" is exciting, suspenseful, and believable. And it doesn't have one character whose entire purpose is to provide cringe-worthy comic relief. (C3PO, I'm looking at you.)
The movie doesn't get a 10 because one small thing important to the plot didn't really make sense, and because while I briefly thought about seeing it a second time it didn't inspire the urge to buy a DVD. But it was definitely my favorite of the Star Wars movies I've seen, and I whole-heartedly recommend watching it.

I think it's much higher than that though. It's very similar to Rogue One in the sense that it gives more explanation of different characters and their backstories. The acting, action, and plot were all good. As a labeled "movie snob" by my wife and friends, I had a hard time finding anything wrong with this film. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was because it didn't leave me with a "you gotta see this movie" feeling, which makes sense since Star Wars is a very specific viewing audience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

OUI, OUI, OUI, j’ai adoré ce spin-off.

Wait & See.

The last 2 star wars films had me conflicted. I loved the gritty feel of Rogue one but missed the character development of the main numbered installments. I felt Solo did a great job of telling a self-contained story, while still adding depth to preexisting characters. It was a fun adventure film that to me felt like star wars. This was added by the use of practical effects in certain scenes that appeared more real than the CGI counter parts. Some things that didn’t work for me was some of the scenes were too dark and hard to follow, and the main robot came across as more annoying than enjoyable. From an acting standpoint, I don’t think anyone can capture the natural charisma of Harrison Ford, but I thought Alden Ehrenriech had a believable enough performance. As a whole I thought the cast was great, Donald Glover standing out as a perfect Lando. Overall, I would recommend this film to those looking for a fun sci fi film or just a fan of star wars in general. Expand

When this was announced, we all had low expectations - "nobody can convincingly play the young version of an established character". I was minded that if they made it "just about" plausible and believable, then even if it wasn't great, I would be satisfied. But this Han Solo actor beat those expectations and played him to a convincing degree! It was not "just about okay"; it was convincing from his look, to his voice, right down to his mannerisms. Was it perfect and was it 100% the Han Solo we know? No, but this would be impossible to achieve and unrealistic to expect. But I promise you can put whatever subtle differences he displays down to him "being a younger Han Solo". The point is, it's better than "just about okay". On a scale of 1 to 10, where 5 is "neutral just bobbing between okay and not", I'd give it an 8 or 9, simply because 10 is impossible. It was a great attempt and you can tell the actor put in the effort and rose to the challenge so as not to disappoint us.

This film suffers a little from the fact that there is no obvious overarching plot. It's more of a silent documentary and biography of how Han Solo became a smuggler, and obviously ends with him setup to become the Han Solo that we see in EP4, rather than with a typical "good guy kills bad guy, happily ever after" ending that we're used to. This is fine, because the film is great and exciting.

I have seen people criticise the lack of the Millenium Falcon doing many complex manoeuvres in this film: don't listen to these critics. Scenes of the millenium falcon doing sophisticated battle manoeuvres were not necessary because the other action scenes were sufficient. We've already seen what the falcon can do enough times, so it would have just been filler and repetetive anyway. Plus, this film was not about the Millenium Falcon, it was about Han Solo the Smuggler. How can we learn about his tricks as a smuggler if the focus is on the falcon dodging ties and flying through planet and asteroid cores?

As a film: 8/10 - As a film, it lacked an overarching plot. As a film, it left me satisfied but not wowed. Satisfied is all I require for a good rating however.

As a SW film: 9/10 - As a SW film, the lack of an obvious overarching plot in a side story is understandable.

It seems the "A Star Wars Story" series are hitting every note, while the main episodes are still finding their footing and letting us down in the process.

I went in with low expectations thanks to TLJ. I didn't watch any of the Solo trailers and I didn't read any news about the movie beforehand. This movie was made for the existing Star Wars fanbase and I enjoyed it because of that. I felt like TLJ was made to gather a new Star Wars fanbase while letting the past die, killing it if it has to.

I have always had a difficult time figuring out exactly what it is about Star Wars that I love so much. There are so many elements to the movies, I'm not sure I can put my finger on just one of them. If I had to choose, I would say the movie's ability to take me to a galaxy far, far away is the core element. The Last Jedi didn't do that for me, but Solo did. I love the feeling of wonder and fantasy. The "lived in" environment, full of used machinery and living spaces, is ever present. We get a better feel for how the Empire has truly permeated its presence throughout the galaxy. We get to see how lawlessness reigns in some galactic territories. We get to see new and familiar alien species. We get to see planets that are mentioned in previous Star Wars films, but not seen in a movie until now. For the most part, I felt like I was in the Star Wars universe throughout this film. No, the film isn't perfect, but that's true of all the previous Star Wars films so far. I didn't feel like this movie was trashing Star Wars, it was merely building on what already exists. Considering the setbacks Lucasfilm faced during production, I think this movie turned out quite well. I never really wanted a movie about Han Solo, but I'm happy with what we got.

It had the minimal amount of dragging and useless dialog. It had the right amount of action scenes which where perfectly executed and kept simple and believable but still managing to 'wow' the audience. It also satisfied most of fan expectation shedding light to a very interesting, fun and entertaining back story of one of the most important major characters in the Star Wars universe.
The acting was very good, and top notch by every single one of them. The directing was done with great care as well, just as the scenes and the script suggests the work of a professional. Also the story was very good and entertaining and also kept real to the environment and previously set rules of the world and other story lines in it. The humor was very fitting and added another layer of entertainment to the movie.
Overall it is an amazing movie, better than most with this brand. Very well executed, with care and expertise which shows in every single aspect of the movie and the level of detail. And did better than most of it, and it is still under appreciated.

Wow, I've never seen a fanbase THIS toxic. Not a single review that is under a 6 has valid arguments to why this movie was ''bad''. The only thing I'm seeing is: Kathleen Kennedy ruined Star Wars, SJW Propaganda and Disney ruining Star Wars. So lets get to why I liked it. Solo: A Star Wars Story is something new and refreshing. It's so much better than I expected. The story is amazing, Jon and Lawrence Kasdan have done an amazing job. Despite the movie having a directorial change it still feels very coherent and well put together. The movie was great fun all around. SPOILERS AHEAD. The reveal of Darth Maul (Sam Witwer/Ray Park) was surprising and it felt right. He fits right into the story and I really want to see those other 2 Solo movies to find out what happens next with the Crimson Dawn. The surprises of Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) turning on Han (Alden Ehrenreich) was an amazing twist. Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo) is not what I expected, I expected it to be bad. He was great in the role as Han Solo and Lando was also excellently played by Donald Glover. Overall I was less divisive about Solo: A Star Wars Story than The Last Jedi and it was a very fun movie in general. Score by John Powell was also great, especially Enfys Nest's/the Savareen's theme.

Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job as Han because he doesn't try to portray "Harrison Ford as Han Solo" but Han the character himself. The supporting cast is also great.

The movie starts off slow in the first hour or so, but by the third act you're fully caught up in what will happen next. The driving forces of the movie are the characters; Han himself is still the sarcastic scroudrel we know and love, but untarnished by a life of smuggling; Lando Calrissian is a great comic relief character; Tobias Beckett is the bitter smuggler and thief; Qi'ra proves to be much more than "Han's love interest" as someone who will do anything to survive; L3-37 is a droid determined to start an uprising. If you're a dedicated Star Wars fan, you'll be delighted at all the references to the Star Wars universe; Mandalorian armor is seen, dozens of alien races we've seen in other movies have cameos, there are a LOT of hidden nods, and the character reveal at the end is FANTASTIC. (No, he's not supposed to be dead; the animated Clone Wars show explains that.)

If you're a Star Wars fan, this movie is a must-see.

I thoroughly enjoyed Solo, and the spin it had on the reasons “WHY” Harrison Ford’s Solo was charismatic, rough around the edges, a diamond in the rough. Not everyone starts life jaded. I think all the actors played their role extremely well, and the movie went back to the basics of storytelling. There were little nuggets and shout outs to all fan boys, but this was a spin-off from the trilogy. With regards to the politics infused into Star Wars, I will agree Disney needs to eliminate this undertone to its SW movie franchise. However, I have been a long time SW fan (established in 1977) and I will say nothing beats the original trilogy, but the only two great movies for me that has come from Disney’s SW are Rogoue One and Solo. This movie delivered entertainment, twisted romance, comedy and a great cameo! I love Hans Solo and Chewy even more now than ever! This movie, for me, is better than ANY DC or MARVEL (excluding Deadpool 1 and 2) movie. Expand

Lacks the epic stakes of a typical SW movei, sure, and the complex spiritual undertones (no one will be debating what x, y, or z 'really meant' outside comic book stores). Lots of twists you see coming and a few you don't. I'll see it again in theaters and buy the DVD. For comparison, I had tickets for TLJ for opening day and day 2, and didn't bother to show up on the second day. The DVD is still in the shrink wrap on my shelf (preordered it). Expand

There is plenty here to help flesh out the SW universe and we get a deeper look into the criminal elements than the surface level glances we've got in the past movies.

There are some minor issues with the plot - bizarre hyperinflation in a stated 3 year period, a critical element only being found on one planet - but nothing that takes you out of the experience. The acting is pretty solid, I was skeptical when Donald Glover was cast as Lando, but by the end of the movie I was sold.

There's some parts that drag, but overall the movie is just something you don't wanna take your eyes off of. On one hand I hate the direction Disney is taking the franchise and absolutely despise the Sequel films. But if I'm to punish movies I don't like then its only fair I praise movies I do like. And I did have a really great time with this flick.

It really is a Heist/Gangster film in a Space Opera setting. We see brilliant shots of the Corellian Slums, a muddy warzone on Mimban, and some really excellent sequences of the Falcon in space.

The humor was much more subtle and appropriate than anything from the sequel films. The characters, though a little one-dimensional at times make much more sense. The empire is portrayed as vast and intimidating whilst also not having infinite reach. Callbacks and references to the other films and to the EU (surprisingly enough) occur often but they rarely stand out as forced.

While the future of the franchise is pretty much a lost cause post-Endor, both of the side-stories have managed to seriously impress me despite extremely low expectations. If you're boycotting Disney for the travesties they've committed with Episodes 7 & 8 then I can understand not wanting to see another Disney-produced film. This idea cuts both ways however, if Lucasfilm start making Star Wars movies you actually like and you don't see them, it'll send the message that people really do want the adventures of MaRey Sue vs Cry-lo Ren and the Hitler Youth repeated every year for all time. Be consistent, or you'll never get the Star Wars universe you want to see.

Ehrenreich isn't doing a Harrison Ford impersonation, but he's definitely doing Han Solo. He's younger, more idealistic, and more enthusiastic because he hasn't had that beaten out of him yet, but I never once felt he wasn't Han. I had been expecting to like Glover as Lando better, but Ehrenreich's Solo beat him out. The rest of the show does its job of telling one of Han's early stories with fun, new characters, locales, and visuals. A visit to some old locales we've only heard of but never seen. And it leaves us with plenty of places to go for sequels (and even drops a couple hints for Lando prequels). I'm hoping to see Han and Chewie's adventures in the Corporate Sector or Nar Shaddaa, or other places we've never heard of. Solo is the best of the new crop of Star Wars movies, which means only a couple of the original trilogy beat it. ADDENDUM: After reading some of the negative reviews complaining about L3 being a "feminist" or Lando being "robo-sexual" or something, I just can't shake my head more at how wrong they are. Yes, L3 has a strong personality, an actual character instead of a cardboard stereotype, and she's a "droid rights" proponent, but it is in no way a reflection of real world politics. It's a reflection of fake Star Wars world politics and just fleshes out the galaxy far, far away even better. There have been droid rights and "are droids sentient and alive?" things brought up at various times throughout Star Wars merchandising history (I recall various novels and comics). L3 is not the first droid rights proponent (HK from the Knights of the Old Republic games led a full-on droid rebellion, and he's a fan favorite), and she's not the first droid to have a cranky "I'm as important as humans" personality...most people seem to like Chopper from the Rebels cartoon. The feminism thing is just ridiculous, and this is coming from someone who hates that kind of junk being shoehorned into otherwise good shows. And Lando is NOT in love with L3 anymore than Han would later on be with Chewie or Luke was with Artoo. She was his friend and long-time co-pilot. L3's comment that he was in love with her WAS MEANT TO BE A JOKE! It was coming from the mouth of what was obviously an arrogant, self-deluded comic relief character and whose words shouldn't always be taken as 100% truth. And if that wasn't enough for you to get it, the patronizing "sure he is" look she got from Qi'ra should have made sure you knew it. Expand

By the end, I left the theatre pleasantly surprised. This is the kind of Star Wars movie that was needed after the not-so-subtle statement given by TLJ and Rian Johnson that fans and their sentimental attachment to "the past" should be disregarded and trashed. Solo feels like an apologetic love letter to the fans of the original trilogy, written by none other than the writer of the (arguably) most iconic Star Wars film: The Empire Strikes Back. Lawrence Kasdan - along with his son - have very much kept the spirit of the OG movies alive. The movie involved the very same people that created the galaxy far, far away that we so love: George Lucas and John Williams have contributed modest - yet significant - input to the production of Solo, for the narrative and the soundtrack respectively.

Does Alden Ehrenreich match up to Harrison Ford's Han? Of course not, but it seemed to me Ehrenreich and Ron Howard were well aware that it's impossible to nail that. Instead of simply emulating, they paid tribute to Ford's portrayal, and I think Ehrenreich did an admirable job of a frankly impossible task of filling Ford's shoes to such an iconic character.

As for the rumours that the movie is an SJW propaganda film, there is naught to fear. If anything, L3-37 seems very much a parody of overly zealous advocates, and there is nothing showing Lando as a walking check in the quota box for a pansexual character. Beware of misinformation on both sides of the fence. In fact, nothing political even came to my mind throughout the film - it was simply a fun ride from beginning to end, and I think many of the fans would appreciate all the homages and easter eggs stemming from the original trilogy, prequels and even the pre-Disney EU.

To those refusing to see the film, you have all the right to decide how and where to spend your money; but I implore you to consider that trashing the film's reception without even giving the movie a shot is sending the wrong message to Disney at the wrong time. Where the executives sit, they only see numbers, and right now, the numbers will tell them that movies that create controversy such as TLJ are commercial successes that will need to continue to be capitalized on; and movies that pay tribute to the fans and have the input of the minds behind the original films - such as Solo - are no longer wanted by the fans - even if that couldn't be further from the truth. Notice how Solo had very little support from Disney: the lack of marketing for the film in favour of the continued PR for TLJ leading up to the latter's home media release, and rumours of their projections that a movie like Solo will fail. In the end, fans would be fulfilling Disney's prophecy by blindly misdirecting the discontent stemming from TLJ onto Solo, rather than directly criticizing the source of that discontent (see the controversy of EA's Battlefront 2 as a perfect example of how fans/consumers can send a powerful message the right way).

For the characters I think the actors did an amazing job capturing the charm especially Alden Ehrenreich who did a great job portraying Han in the movie. It felt like Star Wars with just the right amount of fan service with nods to the animated series's yet didn't feel convoluted. The movie succeeded in what is set out to be, a fun heist film that fits nicely in the star wars universe. My only gripe is that Han wasn't quite "Hany" enough, but he was written really well. All around the script was really well written, the cinematography was excellent, and I find myself wishing I had gone to see it in the theaters and I would have if TLJ hadn't turned me off to Disney's Star Wars just a few months earlier. Not only does it cover the basics of a good film, but it is a worthy addition to SW. It has a few things that were not of my liking, such as the pointless deaths of Rio and Val, the 'droid rights' activism from L3-37 (which I think is rather annoying and unnecessary), and the fact that it's not very sinister or dark considering it's a crime film. On the other hand, it counts with impressive acting talent, beautiful visuals, interesting additions to and from the SW lore, and a rather unique aesthetic design for the beloved Millenium Falcon. It may not be the best film out there, but Solo is a definite recommend, not just for SW fans, but for anyone. Expand

SoInitially I had never decided to watch the Star Wars Anthology movies, since I only wanted enough information to understand what the franchise is all about. I watched the movies (IX hadn't come out yet), and I really liked the storyline. So that is why I decided to watch this movie because I had really grown into liking Han Solo, and I didn't like how he was given such an unfair death. And so I decided to give this and Rogue One a watch. Unlike conventional audience, however, I liked Solo and didn't like Rogue One (the review is on my profile, in case you want to know why).
Solo is the only Star Wars movie that I was able to understand in my first viewing. English is not my first language and I watch the movies without the subtitles to hone better command over the language. This is why its campiness didn't bother me, but rather made me like it even more. Although the actor didn't really look like Harrison Ford, I was happy to just see him do something on the screen. That coupled with the amazing CGI and cinematography made this movie worth a watch.
I really liked the story. The beginning part where Han is trying to get himself a better life really made me feel uncomfortable in a good way. Seeing the scene I could feel how miserable Han was feeling at the moment. He only wanted a better life for his woman, and ended up being taken away from her and getting drafted. His meeting with Chewbacca felt very tense even though we all know they are going to be friends. The train robbery scene was also very cool, although I don't remember too much about this movie. It has been very long since I watched it.
As long as Solo helped in adding more to my favourite human character's lore in the franchise, I'm all good with it. It's great to see a movie which is all about Han Solo and Chewbacca, completely free from the influence of Luke or Leia. I really hope Star Wars makes a third movie in the anthology so that we can have a complete fourth trilogy.

I've loved han solo my whole life since I learned he existed, and I definitely enjoyed this film, but that isn't necessarily the point. What I mean to say is that this is a film and it has plot twists, set ups and payoffs, it is a film with stuff going on! I am happy that we at least got this one single look into the expansion of the universe we all love so so much, I guess what I'm saying is if you hated this film because it added, or changed something about a character that you love and identify with, I guess you just don't get how people work, I dont know if you are the same person that you were when you were 25 or 10 even. Okay, now to get past the preconceived negativity I've seen echoed everywhere that has a message-board. I REALLY LIKED THIS FILM, but more importantly, when I looked into the structure of the film, it became clear how much of a mark A beautiful mind Director Ron Howard had left in the production, the methodical and constantly repositioning narrative is the result of business outside the directors hands ie. The condensation of a 3 movie pitch, being compressed down to a one movie pilot, with hope for more, and so many fans WANT more, but there were several films of the star wars brand that had released by the time this film came around, I think its honestly just a combination of OT fan boys hating anything new that doesn't fit into their preconceived structure for what makes a Star Wars, and the absolute mammoth brand fatigue in a world filled with enough superheroes to destroy the multiverse. ANYWAY, most importantly, if you read this review and you are on the fence about seeing the film, just find a way to watch it with friends, think about it as the start to a bigger story, the way Ep. IV did, the effects, the racing, the atmosphere and constant high speed world building, this film is one of a kind and I hope to God we get another, I would be so psyched for more Lando, played by the incredible successor to Billy Dee, Donald Glover. It plays out some new and familiar characters in ways that put them in a fresh light.... The movie takes you to many intriguing and well displayed places in the starwars universe, and builds the world without feeling boring or trite like *cough cough* some other star wars movies. The characters are written a tad bit off from the originals, but in such a way as to still do them justice as they are younger and possibly have a slightly different personality that isn't as chizeled as in the original trilogy (which i quite liked). Great CGI, great cinematography, great direction, and overall tremendous improvement in terms of general viewing experience. I finally didn't find myself sighing after every scene, nor did i get bored, or feel underwhelmed by the execution of the acting. I would watch this movie over any of the core star wars movies in the recent trilogy. I really don't see why half the people don't like it.... The robot was a tad bit out their..... but honestly.... It wasn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be... It's just a slightly more eccentric character than C3PO.... Really don't understand the hate... people just want to hate on everything starwars... which i completely understand... but i was thoroughly surprised to find that the movie was above my expectations. Chewbacca is Chewbacca, the storm troopers are storm troopers, and the Millennium Falcon is the Millennium Falcon. But Han is not in any way shape or form a younger version of the character played by Harrison Ford. Keep that little caveat in mind and you’ll be all right.

It’s also a game of two halves. I’m not sure at which point it tipped over, but by the end I felt like I wasn’t watching a picture painted by the same person(s) who’d been holding the brush at the beginning.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And without a doubt it’s a much better film than The Last Jedi, which does not hold up to repeated viewings. It’s on a par with Rogue One but not quite on the same level as The Force Awakens. Keeping in mind my earlier advice, I enjoyed Alden Ehrenreich’s performance. He carried the film well. I liked him, I didn’t want him to die and I was sorry when the end credits rolled. Supporting players - Woody Harrelson was ok, but Paul Bettany (thanks to the script) was a villain by numbers. Emilia Clarke was neither here nor there, and Donald Glover suffered from the ‘not Han’ syndrome in his portrayal of Lando.

The story moved along in logical steps, I guess. Though I couldn’t tell you what the plot actually involved, other than mumbo-jumbo about expensive blue fuel type stuff, and people owing other people lots of money.

But don’t be swayed by the critics. This is a much better film than has been suggested by people who are supposed to know a lot more about film than you and me. See it for what it is and you’ll enjoy it, and you won’t miss Jedi, or destinies, or light sabres etc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. 8/10. Great Film.

Despite all the stories of its troubled production and allegedly being pulled back from the brink ,the SOLO film is great fun. I saw a midnight showing in the UK, and the film was thoroughly enjoyable. Far more engaging and focussed than the ramshackle and embarassingly poor " The Last Jedi". The film makers didn't abuse and disrespect the characters this time in the way they did to Luke Skywalker , and they didn't make pointless vapid scenes, like they did in the Canto Blight section of The Last Jedi. I say give the new trilogy to Ron Howard, he appears to be able to do no wrong, and he has such a great history of film making.

In SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY the cast were great, with our leading man even managing to sound like Han Solo ! The music was a little hit and miss, with music you wanted to hear both muted and under used, and other music making little or no impact. But that's only a slight criticism of an otherwise engaging film. Having read some of the "professional critics" reviews of this film on this site, for those that didn't review it well, they were WAY off the mark and obviously have little or no idea what makes good Sci-Fi, good Star Wars or good fun. Ignore them, they're obviously full of their own precious, yet ultimately entirely unimportant & incorrect opinions. Lets face it, "professional critics" are usually full of "something", if you know what I mean !

This film has a fast moving plot, lots of action, brilliant special effects, tonnes of fan service , both visual and verbal and proof to all those that didn't like that little edit in the remaster of Star Wars that George Lucas made where Greedo got the first shot off...I can tell you now with utter certainty & with faith in the quality of this film , that Han Shot First.

Bluray steelbook pre-ordered !!!

In this movie, there are no major transgressions against the established lore (see the hyperspace Kamikaze maneuver in The Last Jedi) or questions left unexplained (see "Who even IS Snoke?" and "What was the point of the Dark Side Hole?" in The Last Jedi). So, what is there? What is this? Well, it's simply a fun backstory movie for Han, Chewie and Lando, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than that. Whatever the characters do makes sense, the plot is simple but there is just enough at stake with just enough twists that it still makes sense (unlike The Last Jedi, like seriously WTF was that movie?) and the humour is pretty fitting for the younger versions of the characters we already know. Where Rogue One was gritty and impactful, where The Force Awakens was fresh and exciting, where The Last Jedi was pretentious and confusing, Han Solo is lighthearted, enjoyable and very much re-watchable. It wasn't a dramatic masterpiece but I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. While Force Awakens and Last Jedi were far more polished, I had much bigger narrative and directorial issues with both than I did Solo. I thought the fan service peppered throughout was handled impeccably, Alden Ehrenreich did an uncanny job capturing young Harrison Ford's mannerisms as Solo, and Glover was superb as Lando. If you're a fan of the original trilogy do not let the polarizing views dissuade you from seeing this on a big screen and judge for yourself. Expand

I'm so glad I took his advice because I ended up loving this movie! I was entertained from beginning to end and found it really interesting and cleverly done regarding answering basic questions (history of Chewbacca, melenium falcon, etc). I walked out of the theater feeling like this Star wars was right up there with Rogue One and am still baffled as to why so many people don't like it. I thought the actors who played Solo and Lando did phenomenal jobs and very quickly lost myself in the movie and had no problem linking those actors with those characters. For me personally, I thoroughlly enjoyed this movie and will even say I look forward to watching it again in the future which is extremely rare for me to feel that way. Expand

I had some issues with some of their casting choices (needlessly large names) and there were a few points of "ugh, really?" but in general I felt it was a good movie. Better than Last Jedi, but that's a low bar.

Everyone raves about Glover's Lando and they're right to. He did, imo, a fantastic job of being Lando. The speech, the style, the swagger, and the interactions with Han. Fabulous.

Han's never-give-up attitude and how he got into what he does was pretty well done, I feel. Seeing things for what they were rather than what he was told and ensuring that he got what he wanted, even if others told him he couldn't have it. Chewie was great. Not overdone, not underused; just right and in the right way. Got to see why you never upset a wookie :)

There were no "casino" or "pod race" scenes that took up large chunks of the movie and for that I am thankful. This was a story about Solo; simple as that.

I also enjoyed some of the twists near the end. Some were easy to see, others not so much, and one that left me scratching my head. Based on the head scratcher, I almost wonder if there will be a separate story spawned from this story that focuses on another character...

So why didn't I rate it higher? Solo was a bit too plucky. Harrison Ford had a sort of carefree attitude whereas Ehrenreich almost had a "stoked to be here" vibe going on. Easy to ignore but also something I am aware of. There was a chapter of the movie pretty early on that wasn't very space-y. I noticed how similar it seemed to some of the director's other movies. As I mentioned above, there were some "Ugh, really?" scenes/statements that either messed with the flow or felt shoehorned in just to make connections to the existing universe. But what I remember most were the awesome moments of awesome. Stories from the OG Trilogy that got some spotlight, interactions between characters, as well as Solo showing that he wasn't just a street rat, but a naturally talented and surprisingly lucky go-getter that's out to make his life comfortable by any means necessary. Now if only they could make him a bit more of a scoundrel...

This movie was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it far more than star wars: the last Jedi, which I found to be quite bad to be honest.

The cast was spot-on, especially Donald Glover who played Lando Calrissian. You could not have asked for a better performance. Just a seriously good movie overall, would go to theaters to see it a second time. Lots of unexpected twists, and a lot of good action. The most important though, is that everything made sense and the plot/scenes felt wholly conjoined. I never once thought that anything felt disconnected or didn't make sense. The only thing that pushed it down to an 8 for me was Emilia Clarke who played Kira, Hans girlfriend, who is one of the main characters in the movie. Thought they could have done a better job with her overall story, so for that I can't give it more than an 8. Great movie, great acting. Would definitely recommend if you like star wars.

I thought the performances of Han Solo, Lando, Qi'ra, and Beckett were all good. Ehrenreich did a particularly good job of capturing Han's swagger. Dryden Vos was a typically cliché villain but was adequate. Even at more than two hours, there was no fat in this movie, no wasted scenes. The action constantly moved forward and there was never a dull moment. Maybe people were disappointed that the story wasn't epic enough? This was Han Solo's life before Luke Skywalker, he was an outlaw and a smuggler. The story suited him perfectly. I also enjoyed the full story behind how he won the Millennium Falcon. The short review: The film is good, not great. Without the Han Solo brand, it would not really stand out. A non-Star Wars fan would probably think it's only so-so.

Related media: I have seen all of the Star Wars films, but chose to sit The Last Jedi out and save my money. I had a bad feeling about it… after watching The Force Awakens.

What's it like?: It tells the story of Han, from his tough youth at Corellia, shipyard of the Empire’s fleet, to when he wins the Millennium Falcon from Lando (not a spoiler). New events and characters were added to his canon and one detail appears to be there just for Disney to spin-off a character to another film, say Solo 2? Overall, the film didn’t feel special – there were not much tension or surprises, and the soldiers/guards still can’t shoot! Positives: 1) Lando is flamboyant and L3, the robot, is funny and interesting as a robot-suffragist.

Negatives: 1) The story is not surprising or special and it lacks that Star Wars essence. Without the Han Solo brand, it would not really stand out. Rogue One felt similar for most of the film, but it did have the epic space battle at the end to sum it all up.

2) The film seems to be written just to explain why the Kessel run happened. The part of the story near the ‘run’ felt contrived and it had a few lazy Star Wars myths thrown in there.

3) The film also explains how Han gets his name, how he meets Chewie, why he's called Chewie and why Han shoots first, mostly in the most conventional and uninspiring of ways. That's the director's fault.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: Good
Teens: Good
Young adults: Good Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema.

While I admit that The Last Jedi was a failure in story telling and use of old and new characters it has nothing to do with this movie. It is the retelling or better said a reboot for the backstory of Han Solo. Before the movie I don't thought it was necessary. The backstory was well established in at least seven Star Wars books I read and some comics I heard of. After seeing the movie I was satisfied and will say the movie was worth watching. I should mention that the initial directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord left the project because of creative differences (There are many rumours circulating about this). It was most likely a critical loss for the movie. Look at their filmography and you will get a glimpse of what was possible. But back to the movie: You see Han grown up in poverty chasing his dreams in a cruel galaxy. Then there are of cause the meeting with Chewbacca, how he get the Millennium Falcon, the Kessel run and there is a heist. The characters are excellent. Alden Ehrenreich is a fitting Han Solo. He is naive and a rascal (all meanings of the word!) at the same time. Donald Glover as Lando is the best character in the movie. He is interesting, charming and has always an ace in his sleeve;-). The rest of the cast is impressive. I like Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra (Top rascal), Woody Harlson as Tobias Becket (Scoundrel of all traces master of some) and the social justice robot L3-37 (So entertaining, should have more screentime). Chewbacca (Jonas Suotamo)is a different case. I think he does also an excellent job but should have a bit more screen time (Also the costume dilutes his skills. How did Andy Serkis avoid this?). All characters work well together, have believable motives and interactions. The story delivers what you expect in a good way with some surprises and good fan service. There are no complaints in this regard. The pacing is good as are the settings and visuals. The music is always top notch in a Star Wars movie. There are of cause some things that are negative: The scene where Han gets his surname is ridiculous. I want to know more how Qi’ra got there were she is. If you see the surprising cameo end scene you will fully concede (Would have the potential for an even better movie). Overall a movie worth my time even it it will not be in my top ten for the year. It is much better than many people will make you believe. Expand

That said, Solo has some cringe moments (equal rights), but overall was a bold movie about Han Solo's young adulthood and early-career in smuggling. This movie gives us insights into the relationships between Han, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrisian that I appreciated. There is enough mystery and suspense during the film to keep you guessing, and a few jokes that make it feel like a classic Star Wars film. I would have liked to see a bit more evolution to of Han Solo throughout, as the characters do not evolve much. I am actually eager to see the next iteration of this film, there are a lot of questions that I want answered, mostly surrounding Solo's girlfriend, and is she a Sith? Reason for 8/10 is because...
-1 for SJW crap
-1 for incomplete story-line (what happens between Solo leaving the first planet, and the Empire battle?)

Most likely everyone saying anything positive about it in the user-section will get downvoted heavily, too, as people can´t distinguish anymore between a crusade on Disney´s mishandling of the main-series and the actual quality of a movie. I´m not a shill, I´m not enthralled by Disney and I am severely disappointed by how Episode 7 and especially 8 went, as many rightfully are, but still people will assume the worst things about me simply because I will not be convenient for their cause by liking a new Star Wars movie.

Solo, despite everything being stacked against it, turned out to be really good and the most Star Wars-y since Return of the Jedi. The characters are engaging and fun, yet also not lacking in complexity and flaws. Especially Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo and yes, Alden Ehrenreich fill their roles with so much vibrancy and life that it is a joy to watch. The action is playful and exciting without a need for "hypercharging" everything as JJ Abrams and Johnson did, it´s easy to follow yet the setpieces are memorable and harken back to the good old "lived-in universe"-feel of the old trilogy I love so much. The story is both mature and accessible with a couple fun twists and turns that help portray the seedy underbelly of the galaxy. The moments every fan was waiting for yet dreaded because they could so easily be grating with the wrong execution are handled gracefully, confident and understated which was fantastic to see. The biggest problem is the pacing of the movie; in the middle of it, it drags for about twenty minutes as the further direction of it has been established yet the stakes are not quite there yet. It recovers quickly from this stutter, though, leading into a superb third act.

In short: Solo somewhat rekindled my hope that there can still be good Star Wars movies that create the fun and excitement of the old movies while standing on their own. I am sad that so many will not give it a chance simply by feeling in the right to slam everything Star Wars till Disney fixes its main-series titles. Solo deserves better and our current user-review climate does, too.

Till this point the sequel movies have been a disappointment, no world building or real character building and most of that blame would be put on The Last Jedi for that but that's neither here nor there. The point is, is that this film is actually good, perhaps even better than Rogue One(which was the only previous Disney Star Wars film I've enjoyed) Surprisingly Alden Ehrenreich has the charm and swashbuckling style of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, I was really cautious going in and I have to say that the trailers did not do Alden justice but perhaps that was intentional I don't know. Donald Glover is pretty good as Lando and I really liked Woody Harrelson's character, they fit their parts. Another actor who's also pretty good is Emilia Clarke, she was pretty bland in the Terminator movie but here she's actually charming in her role. The robot L3-37, right... some people wont like her but I imagine some people will, she's played a certain way that one will see as either and endearing or annoying but I personally really liked her character too. Anyways the critic scores interesting because these are the same people that gave The Last Jedi glowering reviews, obviously there's something shady going on there. I give this this film an 8 just like Rogue One because it's surprisingly cohesive, the characters work well in their roles, the story focuses far more on these characters than I thought it would, i'd say this is definitely more worth your money to watch than The Last Jedi was. There is so much I could say about this movie! What I’m left with is just how much fun I had. I left the theater buzzing and wearing the same goofy grin as Solo himself. I had low expectations for this after hearing the production woes and let's be honest, there isn't a more impossible acting challenge than filling Han Solo's space boots. But this movie is EXACTLY what I have always loved about Star Wars:I had low expectations for this after hearing the production woes and let's be honest, there isn't a more impossible acting challenge than filling Han Solo's space boots. But this movie is EXACTLY what I have always loved about Star Wars: it's a bustling, swashbuckling space western. The comedy notes are actually played perfectly, and the movie gets genuine laughs without coming across as pathetically desperate for the jokes to hit. Alden Ehrenreich does a solid job of portraying Han, again, I can't see anyone nailing that role. Supporting cast is all terrific, especially Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a no-nonsense droid activist. Really the only thing that could really boost this movie over the top would have been some more creature encounters (which for some reason no new Star Wars movie seems to include), although this movie has one memorable one. In short, I walked into this expecting to never want to see it again, and now not only can I not wait to see it again, I would be into a sequel, or even a spin-off movie with some of these new characters.
P.S. The sad men in these low scored reviews who are devastated by the 'feminist robot', etc, are a pure joy to read. I'm a man, I've loved Star Wars all my life, and I would put my Star Wars nerddom up against anyone. I like baseball, comic books, off-roading, all kinds of traditionally 'male stuff' and this movie is great. Grow up, small men!

I expected to hate this movie, overall it was really good. there were a few cringe-inducing moments that basically boiled down to "remember Star Wars!?" other than that I enjoyed the movie a lot.

Okay, maybe this one is just for Star Wars fans or something, but I don't really believe that. This was, unexpectedly, one the most fun and exciting action/adventure movies I've seen in a LONG time. This was, unexpectedly, one the most fun and exciting action/adventure movies I've seen in a LONG time. I don't know what people are complaining about but this movie had me shoveling the popcorn into my face, feelin' the feels, laughing - but only an APPROPRIATE amount, unlike other recent Star Wars movies that have packed in TOO MANY jokes - and applauding at the end. I'm not a huge fan of Alden Erinreich, but he did a rather good job with these giant shoes he had to fill, and although he's not how I pictured a young Han Solo, he didn't do a bad job at all. The tone felt right, the characters were believable, and the big set-piece/action sequences were perfect - never too long or over-bloated.

If you don't have fun at this movie, I think you probably hate "fun" in general... and I pity you.

(Ok, the first 20-30 minutes were a little bland, but....) then everything kicked in & it was great. Chemistry between characters was right on, story keeps you on your toes, & finally Star Wars was funny again like A New Hope (also had the funniest droid in the whole saga, hands down). Donald Glover nailed the Billy Dee Williams voice. I'd much rather see a sequel featuring this gang (vs the current SW cast). What a shame this movie had so many hating on it. Seriously, don't miss it! Expand
