The 3 main characters did a bad acting job. At times it felt like a fan film with a really big budget. The actor playing Lando did not have the charisma or way of carrying himself to pull off the character. The sexual implications about Lando and his robot were creepy. The other two actors didn't pull off their characters very well, either. But at least they had each other and weren't getting it on with robots. The secondary characters, including Thandie Newton and Woody Harrelson, were good, but it was critical for the primary characters do a good job too and they just didn't. The story idea was generic and the pacing was off, and the action was overdone. It got to the point where it just seemed messy. There should be a beginning, middle, and end to each scene. An action sequence should have structure. Some of the action scenes felt like the editor had no awareness of that, like fireworks that go on for days. Enough already. And the music was too loud, as if they thought that would convince us this was really Star Wars. It did not. Just as showing us the Falcon dice over and over and over again does not convince us this is really SW. A movie does not magically become a real SW movie because of the props or because you turned the music up. The whole 'Kessel Run' thing wasn't explained well. They applied a similar explanation as used in the SW expanded universe (that Disney removed from canon), but they gave the explanation so little screen time in Solo they basically squandered it. There was one scene on the Falcon that should have been suspenseful but it was full of so many dumb jokes the mood was spoiled. I suspect this was a scene left over from the original directors. If so, that demonstrates how much worse this movie would have been if Ron Howard had not stepped in to improve it. But there was only so much he could do. He could not recast. All in all a disappointment. They really should have gone with Anthony Ingruber. Expand

A disjointed script, bad casting for Han and sub par dialogue. Disney is destroying this franchise. It’s so sad.

[SPOILER FREE]

I don't know what happened, but I think that Harrison Ford wrote Han Solo's character more than George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. I expected better given that this was a Kasdan script. Except this totally missed the mark. Clearly he didn't understand Han Solo.

Chewie was the best he's ever been, which is what got this a +1. Lando was solid. The extra cast varied from charming to predictable. Woody Harrelson was playing Woody Harrelson, in a Woody Harrelson role. I don't know why the droids need to steal the spotlight.

This was the least Han Solo that a Han Solo story could be. It adds NOTHING to the history of Han, nor the Star Wars universe. This literally could have been an off cast story akin to Rogue One and would be just as OK. This is the reason for the low score. It would have been two points higher if it WEREN'T a Han Solo film.

Ron Howard made this watchable. If it weren't for him, it might have been a one, or a two. You can clearly see where the two films diverge. It's like getting smacked in the face tonally by how jarring it changes. I feel really sorry for the cast, but this movie should have been dropped rather than try to salvage.

Worse than expected. There is zero reason for this to exist. I really don’t see why the writers feel the need to explain the origins of the most trivial stuff.

If you are a true Star Wars fan, you will probably see it in the theathers but if you are just a cinema lover you will not enjoy this flick. I highly recommend you pass this one. Is not worth it. Summing up: -Good VFX
-Bad Casting in general (except from some Lando & Chewbacca moments)
-Bad music score. -It seems more like Fast & Furious in space than anything related to Star Wars. - Non existent plot. - One of the worst endings ever. Disney really need to check before doing this much Star Wars movies in a row. This will be my last time i see a Star Wars movie in the cinema. I wont even go to see EP9 regardless if it has a 99 score in metacritic. It shows that Disney wants to get their money back from their investment but this is not the way. Kathleen Kennedy should be fired and in her place should be a producer who really understand this universe like Dave Filoni.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When this movie was first announced I was scratched my head in disbelief. Han Solo was always a great supporting character in the Star Wars series but there wasn't enough mystery about him to justify a spinoff/origin movie. That feeling never really left my mind while watching the film as the movie never really seemed to justify its existence. Rogue One was an interesting story because it was largely made up of characters we had never heard of so we had no expectations. I feel as though many people had plenty of expectations for what they thought Han Solo's backstory should have been. The movie itself is a very slow burn. It takes a lot of time for the plot and characters to become settled. This was probably the first time I've ever been bored watching a Star Wars movie. Making this film centered around a love story was a big mistake. Most of the things you expect to see don't exactly happen in the way you expect them to (Meeting Chewie, Kessel Run, etc...). The writing is bad and the main character comes off as trying too hard to match Harrison Ford's depiction. Inserting Darth Maul was surprising but completely unnecessary to the overall story. It felt totally out of place and seems to setup a sequel which makes no sense. Expand

I'm giving kudos to the actors as they deserve praise for doing a good job. As with The Last Jedi, it was the cast that made the film memorable. Everything else on the other hand...

It was Disney's controllers that gave me great disdain for this film and many other recent Disney films. One can research and see the heads of this industry have a corrupt agenda. And it is this that has been plaguing the modern film in the past decade or so. Enough of the SJW hints in the films or trying to paint certain cultures as bad.

For crying out loud just make decent movies. Movies that relate to the universe in which the characters and plots take place. Stop bringing real world issues into them. Focus solely on the plot of the film, and the movie would be good. If somebody wants to see footage of political or social events, that's what the news networks are for.

Let me reiterate: 10/10 for the actors and those that worked on the movie sets. 0/10 for the ones who own Disney and inject their agendas into the films.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Entertaining in parts but overall a very VERY disappointing let-down. The script is the major floor in the movie. The whole ‘KESSEL RUN’ part was a real let-down, with no real significance to its legacy. Chewy is the standout best thing about the film, although a lot of background is still left out. Whereas Glover is a great Lando. Ehrenreich looks great as Solo looking like Ford in many scenes, but the script and his story lets him down here. All the successful lessons learned for thinking outside the box writing ROGUE ONE have been either forgotten or disregarded. There's just many hole's left unfilled, pointless new issues shoehorned in that didn't add anything to the story. The movies ending has no soul or closure, and resurrecting Darth Maul is a bad setup for a sequel. I have no desire to watch SOLO ever again. Expand

This Han is no Harrison Ford, not by a LONG, LONG shot. All the acting except Woody Harrelsons is average at best, and I thought Alden Ehrenreich was a poor choice as a substitute Han. There were a few nice moments, and some backstory expanded upon, but the main plot of the movie was underwhelming and the film didn't really have any purpose to it except to unsuccessfully expand upon what was already known about Han.

If you thought Jar Jar Binks was a bad character you've seen nothing yet! L33T is probably the most cringeworthy character ever to grace cinema screens, some of the lines are just embarrassingly bad. Even Lando's character was over-rated, I was expecting a charismatic performance based on reviews but even Lando was hollow and underwhelming, and his sexual innuendos with the robot I thought was bizarre and unsuitable to include in a family film. Its purely a cash-in and you could tell it had production issues right the way through. Its a shame the more Disney milk the franchise the more stale it becomes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just a complete and utter waste of time, this was a story which didn't need to be told, in all honesty it isn't a story at all, it's just 2 hours spent fleshing out random lines of dialogue from Han Solo's scenes from the 4 movies he starred in, add in some completely cliched nonsense such as card games being lost in a scene followed by won later in the movie with zero real consequences it was just painful to sit through.

Also we get to know where his name came from (because nothing in Star Wars can be just left alone) but it came from a random enlistment officer calling him alone... or Solo on the naming document, I can't help but think if this is what the officers name every person who leaves that slave colony planet if they're alone... then half the Galaxy should have the second name of Solo, they should actually be the largest family name in the whole Star Wars universe by the time the empire falls.

Waste of time in every way.

EverySolo is a good star wars story, but not a good film. Where Rogue One excelled at referencing the original films in its cinematography and editing, Solo simply forces its characters to speak dialogue exclusively from the originals. Every stormtrooper says 'move along' over and over, Han keeps telling everyone never to tell him the odds and a droid that has just been gambling complains about not being served. The first few are fun, after that it gets ridiculous. The music especially is very often inconsistent with the tone of what is happening on screen and feels awfully out of place. This, combined with a plot that is never quite sure where it is going and characters which, aside from Solo and Qira are largely expendable and or inconsequential makes for a hollow adventure that never quite manages to be fun. The poorly handled sequel set up is the final nail in the coffin of a mess of a film made from what must have been, at some point a very capable and entertaining script. Expand

After the ham-fisted fan-fiction B.S. of THE FORCE AWAKENS, a bit of integrity and hope for the Star Wars universe was briefly bought back by the ROGUE ONE. A further tad of encouragement was brought by the THE LAST JEDI (which was certainly a better and more thoughtful movie than THE FORCE AWAKENS) that made some small steps towards perhaps making this new iteration of the Star Wars franchise worth some time investment. Alas, it seems that Disney can't consistently hire a set of writers and directors to come even close to the coherency and magnitude of Lucas' work, as was sadly evident by this mess of the SOLO movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm more confused by Solo than I am pissed or pleased. Scene by scene it doesn't feel like I'm watching Star Wars, yet it so desperately tries to pretend it is by name dropping every popular schmuck in the galaxy. There are far too many references, little winks and nods to the original movies scattered about the entire 2 hour and 15 minute run-time. Not even the bloody PREQUEL trilogy is safe now; I kid you not Darth **** Maul appears out of nowhere, talking all menacingly then stands up and switches his lightsaber on. He isn't even being attacked, he just does it because he can to look cool. Is this how low we've sunk now? Jeez..

While Disney keeps reminding you how great the old movies were, they continue to further change the setting in-universe to suit their needs; Now suddenly HYPERFUEL is incredibly important and expensive despite it never appearing before, as if this ploy is a literal forced apology for that godawful plot device in TLJ. The further along the story went, the more it felt like it was falling apart. Han and his girlfriend Qi'ra have a meager start on Corellia, established as scavengers on a backwater planet with nothing to their names. They talk about their dreams and desires to live free among the stars and eagerly discuss the plans for their future together. I actually had hope here; It sounded good, and I looked forward to seeing how they would realize this and along the way discover how Solo came to be the daring pirate/outlaw we saw in A New Hope. Yet...nothing even comes close. Han is just good at everything already despite never having left Corellia or shown to pick up any of the skills he uses in his life. He can fly. He can shoot. He can speak Wookiee. He never needs to learn how. They don't try to explain any of this, despite the fact it's an origin movie. It's literally an origin movie in the sense of "Gee, I wonder how Han Solo got his name, ship, blaster and Wookiee partner." Well they were all handed off to him. One after the other, essentially. Yaaay... Okay, well what about other characters? Are they going to have an impact on our young Solo's life?

- Qi'ra, his girlfriend. She is Han's entire driving force behind his character for a huge part of the film. After being separated at Corellian traveler processing he swears he'll find a way to get enough money and come back for her. While he's off doing this they somehow 'run into' each other at a space bar after three years. Han spent that time with the Imperials and didn't change in the slightest, even down to appearance. Qi'ra somehow went from street urchin to a criminal boss' "top lieutenant" & part-time secret shadow assassin working for Darth Maul. Riiight..
- Beckett, professional pistol twirler, Han's 'mentor' and leader of the criminal crew. He had two other members, one being his own girlfriend. Their names JUST SLIP my mind because they both died within 15 minutes of their reveal. How sad. Beckett never mentions them or their deaths again, so I won't blame viewers for forgetting they ever existed. But he DOES mention to Han the importance of anticipating opponent's moves and to always expect betrayal. I wonder who could possibly betray everyo-oh it's Beckett. *clap clap clap*
- Lando Calrissian! What does this smooth, suave legend get to do? He uh, supplies the very fast ship for one heist. That's it. He tags along for the promise of a reward after the heist (which he doesn't stay for) and does nothing else important of his own volition. Riveting. Unfortunately his character is linked to an insufferable droid known as L3-37. L3 is a SJW for droids. She desires EQUAL RIGHTS and FREEDOM FROM OPPRESSION and wants to start an UPRISING. This **** too subtle for you? She also has uncomfortable sexual undertones with Lando, asking him to "do that thing again" to her "lower circuits." He's totally in love with her she says. When Qi'ra asks "how it works" she responds, "Oh, it works." And it just so happens L3 even has The Best Damn Navigational System Ever™ downloaded into her head, which becomes an integral part of the Falcon! Why? Idk lol droid rights. Reminder: THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. THIS IS STAR WARS NOW.
- Chewie once again takes damage control and tries to help you forget Disney can't write for Star Wars by acting funny and busting heads. Also gets a steamy face-to-face scene in the shower with Han because...reasons. Don't question them.
- A scar-faced criminal boss who is bad and does bad things. Dies later. Is as engaging as this description of him.
- A group of bandit marauders who act like the bad guys, getting people killed then are actually the good guys at the end, fighting for the Rebellion. W h a t.

Is it just me or is there a deficiency in story-telling down at Lucasfilm? Is this how good characters are written now?? Good god I've never been so detached watching a Star Wars movie before and equally glad I didn't pay to watch it. It's no wonder Solo bombed and cost Disney millions.

Evidemment.

Acting is good to very good. Film is enjoyable as a whole.
Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim. Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Acting is good to very good. Film is enjoyable as a whole.
Some decisions seem odd or very verbatim.

Without any reference to measure by the film would be a 5 or a 6 on a 10 point scale.

Where the film actively fails is in portraying a Han Solo that is vaguely resembling the force of nature that the Han Solo had in the first movie, A New Hope.

Poised precipitously between good and evil, compentent, savvy, street-wise Han Solo has been now preceded by a harmless, with heart of gold, big, blustering, blundering, superiorily lucky, impulsive, naive, boisterous, ever optimistic big child.

A space faring Peter Pan that fails to grow up. Or where he grows up is in one final act at the end of the movie where he finally commits a, later trademark, evil deed.

Han Solo here is a big child, somebody who would be lost without help.

So my disappointment with Solo is that it paints a picture that is a caricature of the "A New Hope" Solo without leaving many points to refine.

When transposed directly into the chronologically later story instead of the Character every one wanted to play now Han becomes the most harmless sorry piece on the storyboard.

Maybe a more telling name would be Solo: A Star Wars Character(s) wrecking story

Rather disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What on earth is this movie?!!! Well for a start it looks like Darth Maul's been sexually abused and had acid chucked on him judging from his degraded appearance at the end of the movie to the extent even Jar Jar would feel sympathy for Maul if he could see him in Solo. Yet Disney thought it would be good idea for Maul to smile at the end, wtf is this, why would Maul smile like that when he's clearly been traumatised and probably sexually abused by Han Solo?

Chewbacca had way too much screen time, when people go to the movies they don't go to listen to weird animal noises and animal grunts they pay to see people having engaging conversations people can understand!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anyone who gave this cancer a positive rating... shame on you. Truly, you are a corporate shill. To see the way that Disney has sexually-assaulted Star Wars, it's a bit much.

'Solo' is the laziest, dumbest most pointless cash-grab I've ever seen. In 30 years, hell in 30 WEEKS this film is going to be dated as it has pointless #MeToo robot rights that do NOTHING for the plot.

There are USELESS characters that flit in and out (Thandi Newton, the fat guy from Iron Man, Vision from Avengers)

The main star, Alden whatever, is bad. How in the name of sweet baby Cthulhu does this fool continue to work in Hollywood. He has zero acting skills, zero charm and a face like a squashed pie. Which MORON thought that he could fit in Harrison Ford's shoes? Oh and the scene where he gets assigned his name gave me a rectal prolapse. I give this film 1 star 'cause Chewbacca had beautiful hair.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You are here probably wondering if Han Solo got emasculated and ruined as a character even more. The answer is a resounding yes. His name now has a origin that is lamer than anything you could imagine. He is alone when he signs up for the Empire, says his name is Han so the Empire names him Han Solo. He gets bossed around most of the movie by women, there is a disturbing dong to dong shower scene with Han and Chewbacca (no I 'm not kidding). The new droid is a fem1nist from hell and the most annoying thing ever seen in Star Wars and Lando who gets more feminine throughout the movie loves it. Basically this is just another Kathleen Kennedy propaganda film where they strategically try to remove any masculinity from legacy characters. All women in the movie are more masculine than Han. They are all more intelligent and more confident than Han. Oh and yes there is a Darth Maul cameo that has no resolution and it's comical when he fired up a lightsaber for no reason. Enfys Nest is a 16 year old girl rebel who is basically Rey without the force, so even more ridiculous. Avoid if you liked Star Wars. Go see if you hate men and hated the original Star Wars and are glad to endorse the destruction of the franchise. Also highly recommended for kids if you want to damage your son and give him low self esteem. The only reason I didn't rate it a zero is most of these review sites consider scores like that "trolling". It deserves a 0 though. Star Wars is simply dead. Read the Thrawn Trilogy instead and just give up on Disney Star Wars. Expand

The worst thing about this movie is the colour palet. Brown and orange for our Star Wars. I want something new for Star Wars but I know that's impossible at this point because Disney gonna screw it up and that sounds like I hate Disney and I don't think that they massacred my family but I think that the Force Awakens was good but they make bad star wars movies. The casting was dreadful and there was no storyline. It was a snooze-fest. The theatre at prime time in Los Angeles was only 1/3 full and everyone under 35 it looked like. They were all sleeping or walking out. The critics (some of them) in this aggregate site, were far too kind. Go see Dead Pool 2 for a second time or even Avengers. Expand

The plot doesn't feel linear at all and I mostly contribute that to the intense reshoots they did. Alden's performance as Han is so cringe-worthy and awful, It's the worst part of the film. Glover came off as a Lando cosplayer and lacked the charm that Billy Dee brought to the character.

I was also very annoyed with how they had to explain every single aspect of Han's backstory. They had to spoil every single thing that kept this aurora of mystery around Han and it was such a painfully dumb idea. Solo sucks, maybe not as badly as Episode 9 but it is still trash. They should have never done this spin-off film as no one wanted it in the first place.

It was bad just like the last movie, not worth watching at all. Very boring and uninteresting.

This movie was absolute garbage...
Did they not see the difference between a Rogue One story
And a character focused back story... —-So they exclude The Lando we wanted with Billy Dee Williams and we get a perverted creepy Lando back

Disney fanfiction. Nothing more need be said. The stories are already there, Disney can ignore them all they like and people can ignore Disney's fanfiction.

Walked out. They single handily destroyed Han Solo with this movie. I was looking for the Han Solo we all loved. Not this clown on screen. Totally and horribly miscast role. I'm def taking a break from Star Wars after this garbage.
