The final sequence of this movie was......I can't even describe! is not a 10 for me because of the first act and lack of development for Jyn and the captain, Donnye Yen and K2 were amazing.

Be it the rebel extremism of Saw Guerrera, a kind of religious belief (in Force itself), and even the dramatic deepening in the relationship father and daughter of Jyn and Galen Erso. But notorious is the ability of director Gareth Edwards to balance all this and still show respect for the original trilogy, putting scenes with easter-eggs and wonderful references. je reste critique sur la qualité de la VF qui n'est pas à la hauteur (qualité d'interprétation et de production).

The first half of the movie seemed a bit weirdly edited and all over the place, but the last act is amazing. Truly gives you a perspective of war that no other Star Wars movie has ever done. A great time at the cinema overall.

(In-Depth) Rating - 8.2/10

Rogue One, A Star Wars Story, tells the story of how the Rebellion captured the plans for the original Death Star. The film, which is filled to the brim with brilliant action and wonderful CGI, is a great film for fans and film-goers alike.

Almost all of the performances in the film are well executed. The characters that these actors portray, however, are somewhat flat and lack emotional depth. Felicity Jones, who plays the character of Jyn Erso, is a wonderful addition to the many talents on screen. The character of Jyn Erso, however, is extremely weak and one-dimensional, considering that she is the main character of the film. Through flashbacks, we learn about her tragic past, and how her father was taken from her. You can't fully care about this character though, even with her backstory, and just resort to rooting for her simply because she is working with the rebellion. This happens with all of the other characters in the film as well.

Michael Giacchino's score for Rogue One (which he composed in all of roughly 4 weeks, mind you) is the main reason why this film is good. It's magnificent blend between original score and pre-existing themes (most notably, Darth Vader's iconic theme) helps make the film slightly emotional, and truly shines during the action sequences, which are impressive even without the music.

The CGI that encompasses Rogue One is arguably the best of the year. Everything from the glorious ground and space battles over Scarif to the endless amount of sets and and locations, the CGI blends almost perfectly with the live footage. However, arguably the most controversial aspect of Rogue One, is the inevitable inclusion of two motion-capture characters (no spoilers). Personally, I found these characters to be perfectly fine, minus a few (glaring) imperfections. All in all, Rogue One is not a perfect film (by any means), and definitely not as polished as last years' The Force Awakens. But the film is good (great, even), and will make for lots of fun and enjoyment.

The second half, however, was much better, I found the debate inside the rebellion and the war scenes well structured and realistic, and the ending was epic. What I did not appreciate was the choice to make in digital the characters whose original actors were either dead or too old to play the role: the result was a little disturbing, with grand Moff Tarkin reminding me awkwardly of Harry Potter's Dobby, I think they just should've changed actors... But that said, I overall enjoyed very much the movie. Expand

The story is solid in its idea and is straight to the point without being tangled in sub-plots, which also produces the negative that character development is lacking, ripping some of the emotional pull from the film, which is very much needed for a Star Wars film. The heroes throughout the film are each very unique, and whilst some get more screentime than others, they all play their part in the end, which really sets the tone of teamwork well. This film is a great action/adventure blockbuster that should not be missed, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan; resulting in a good first entry to the Star Wars spinoffs. It's a universe we're familiar with and a dark and gritty story that pays off in incredible ways at the end. There are very few movies with 3rd acts that have left me with an almost immediate feeling that I needed or wanted more - and it pays off extremely well every time.

The film expands the universe to a few new planets, but what I enjoyed most about these new locations is how real they feel. They are bustling hubs, full of life and activity, a feeling that really captures how Mos Eisley felt the first time that I had seen it. Most importantly though, the Empire is everywhere. The scale of the Empire is shown off to massive degrees, and that's exactly the way it should be. There is tremendous attention to details, and you can tell these worlds were crafted with great care in mind.

The movie does seem to wear you down a bit before the 3rd act begins. Many complaints show an issue with the movie being fairly boring or snoozy, or there being problems with the dialogue. After seeing the film a couple of times, I don't think the movie snoozes as it does move from place to place briskly, but it does seem difficult for it to hold the audience's attention as we can see from other reviews. Still, this is a movie about a desperate move by the Rebellion to find out more about the Empire's super weapon, and the tone is conveyed as such. These characters are on a mission, and they have to do it quickly. The stakes are high, and because they are so high, it is what helps the final parts of this move pay off in astounding ways.

Still, the characters could have been rounded out just a touch more. The acting is all really quite good, but there's just not enough of these characters to make us root for them a bit more. It was what could have taken this film from really very good to excellent, but it's just not quite there.

But everything pays off in the final act of this film. It's a gigantic battle, and you can feel how desperate both sides are for victory. These are some of the best moments in the entire saga's history - from the beginning of the battle to the final scene. The Empire and Rebellion move like set pieces on a chess board - each strategically trying to turn the advantage, each coming up with a new surprise. Of course, there is a moment here that every Star Wars fan could not help but love, but really, the entire battle is a classic moment for Star Wars. The Battle at Scarif turns this movie from perhaps an average or dangerously below average to nearly astounding. That is how good it is. It pays off the journey to get to this point in the film, and while I didn't think it was a slog at all, I certainly appreciated the journey tremendously more so than the moments before it. Indeed, the final moments left me wanting more, almost immediately, I wanted to go back. It is can't miss stuff for any Star Wars Fan, and really, it makes the film pay off for any newcomer that might come into this universe as well. It's exciting, it's poetic, it's fan service, but it's also very fresh. Rogue One is not just a worthy addition to Star Wars - as a direct lead-in to A New Hope, it makes New Hope even more exciting in tremendous new ways. Does it have a few problems? Sure it does, but Rogue One makes up for the issues in incredible ways, and it earns its spot as one of the top films in the entire series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Far from a perfect movie, Rogue One is an entertaining Sci-Fi action romp. The Characters are all likable and relate-able though their introductions did seem a little rushed. The biggest criticism I have is that at times it seemed that it wasn't sure what tone it wanted to have. There are moments that are dark that hit a perfect tone for the dire story of the movie and then there are times where a heroic almost joyful fanfare plays (reminiscent of the OG Trilogy) and it just feels out of place with the scene. One scene in particular was the biggest offender, When the Rebel Hammerhead cruiser sacrifices itself to take out one of the star destroyers and open the shield gate, the music is bouncy and has a twinkle to it... NO, several dozen if not hundreds of Rebel sailors just sacrificed, willingly might I add, their lives to hopefully open the shield gate. That needed to be somber or heroic. And it was not. There were a few other instances of this happening but not as dramatic as what I just wrote. Other than the tonal issues at times, I feel the direction and acting in Rogue One was exemplary. I feel it sets a good foundation for the "offshoots" of the Star Wars franchise and I'm looking forward to what Lucasfilm and Disney have to offer down the road. Expand

I found The Force Awakens to be slightly better than this one but I think that's only because I was so happy to see someone finally make a movie that lives up to the Star Wars name (I, II & III were horrible). Plus, the nostalgia factor of seeing beloved characters again. But I'll say this about Rouge One: the final 1/3 of the movie is as good...actually, better than, anything that any of the originals had done. The first and second act had enough to keep me interested, but after watching the last act, looking back now, it pales in comparison. Which is not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy every bit of the movie. They don't go into great depth with the new characters, but just enough so that you have an understanding of who they are and that you will care for them and their fate. I liked all the references and throwbacks to the originals of course. And Darth Vader's second appearance was just simply bad ass. The one issue I had was the score. And I'm not blaming the composer, I'm sure he did a great job. I can't even say I'm that big a fan of John Williams, but after seeing 7 movies with his music, it kind of became a distraction when I heard it in the background.. All in all, if you are a fan of the originals you'll be a fan of this as well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the first time since the so unloved Prelogy, when I left the theater, I had that feeling, you know, that little feeling you have when you just saw a Star Wars Movie, I loved it, I really did, let me elaborate on this.
1-The movie's purpose. I've always wondered how could a weapon as extraordinary as the death star have a flaw in it, and most importantly, how could the empire be unaware of it, Finally I have my answer.
2-The Ironic Drama, following characters and getting attached to them knowing that they will die at the end of the movie, that is so cruel, so raw, and that makes the rebellion's values so much greater, those people went on a suicide mission, they fought, they killed, and they died for something they won't be able to experience, Freedom.
3-The planets, we saw so many different environnement, so beautiful landscapes, so wonderful scenes, Visually, it was really beautiful, we experienced the diversity that defines Star Wars, the creativity that characterized Lucas'saga.
4-Darth Vader, the first scene could be considered as rubbish fan-service, but the second one, had a purpose, directly link Rogue One to Ep IV, which makes it its direct prequel, that makes sense, plus THAT SCENE WAS MARVELOUS, when I saw Vader Killing those rebels, I had an orgasm.
5-The Force as A religion, The Force is with me and I'm One With the force, replace Force by "god", and you know what Chirrut is, A Badass Priest, He believed in the force when no one else did, the way he and Baze (which on the contrary was skeptical, but chose to believe when he saw his friend die) was really touching. 6-CGI, it was nearly perfect, Grand Moff Tarkin was, and he always will be (until ep IV ..), I loved the droid, really funny, and cynical.
What I didn't like about the movie is the development of some the characters, Jyn, Andor and the relation between Galen and Krennicshould have been more developed, and I would have loved seeing General Akbar leading the fleet.
Rogue One was a good movie, and a great Star Wars. and that makes Ep VII look even worse. Ep VII could have been much better if Disney didn't force JJ to do it before 2016.
Anyway, May The Force Be With You!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One, directed by Gareth Edwards, is the first standalone film in the Star Wars saga and by far the most intriguing in the franchise. Set as a prequel to Episode 4: A New Hope, Rogue One brings in a group of unknown rebels led by Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), as they travel to new worlds to find the plans to the Death Star, devised by her father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelson). Gareth Edwards, who's other major films include 'Godzilla' and 'Monsters', brings in a new perspective into the Star Wars universe, combining characters and action so well, you'll leave the theater buzzing for more (even when you realize that it leaves you right off a New Hope). The plot to Rogue One is very simple, but it's the characters that really take this movie to new heights. The likes of Jyn, Captain Andor (Diego Luna), K-2S0 (Alan Tudyk), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) make this movie worth watching (other than it being a Star Wars film). The droid, K-2S0, was the stand-out secondary character, able to bring great sources of humour while still being of use. But the real star of the show was Jyn Erso, with Felicity Jones doing a great job as the female lead. She is tough, rebellious and reckless, making her a well-crafted character, that has a great backstory.

Though Star Wars creates great protagonists, Rogue One's main antagonist Orson Krennic is definitely up there with the best. Ben Mendelsohn is powerful, able to give you a villain that any Star Wars fan would want. The action was also spectacular, with the final climatic fight one of the best in the franchises history, which is definitely saying something. Full of wonder and delight, you never drift your eyes away from the screen, with the special effects staff deserving full recognition as they recreate some of the characters of the originals.

It seems hard to not mention Darth Vader, so I will. He has little screen-time, but for every second he is in, he steals the show. One scene in particular was very special, as we see him in action for the first time in years.

Overall, Rogue One is a Star Wars movie that really takes you on a different journey from what you would be used to. It connects itself so well to the beginning of A New Hope, you could combine both movies with no problem. The cast and crew deserve the credit for the effort they made in creating a standalone film in the biggest franchise in movie history. Though the most 'war-like' of the 8 films, it still has moments of levity spread throughout, which reminds you of the original Star Wars spirit. It stands alone in the saga, and it definitely stands high in the huge and ever-expanding universe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One is a solid movie all around. In terms of the new Disney-verse of Star Wars, this movie is my favorite, hands down. This movie captures a story that was actually never really talked about in the OT - getting the death star 1 plans - but its results were far reaching. R1 had a 100% unique story, a bunch of new characters, cameos from Clone Wars & Rebels, and a whole bunch of ships -- new and old. What really sets this apart from the other Disney-verse film at the time, Episode 7, is that the characters actually do NEW things that we've never seen before, not copy and paste the OT. The 3rd act of the film contained a scene that was every Star Wars fan's dream and the film wrapped up in a neat, self-contained story that fit pretty snug in between episodes 3 and 4.

It has its flaws, of course. The pacing of the movie was a serious black eye on the film. The years/settings/missions blurred by really fast in the middle of the movie, making it hard to keep up with. The 3rd act cleans this up, but you can tell there were development problems mid-film. The main characters were all cool, but there were so many new folks introduced at once that I could hardly even remember their names at the end of the film. I think they should have shrunk the crew down by 2-3 people and that would have still been enough to get the mission done.

All in all, this is a solid film and I walked out of the theater with joy. I really felt like it added a big piece to the Star Wars canon. It's the only Disney-verse SW film I've bought on DVD and I hope they try to repeat this same formula in the future.

Daisy Ridley should take note because this is what a strong Female lead looks like, She had an actual heroes journey. Mother was murdered only to be raised by a terrorist as a child soldier and then turns into a hero. the Plot dragged in some places and killed the flow halfway through the movie but the final act alone made the movie amazing. I can only hope that The Last Jedi can be as good as this. Death Troopers FTW. Expand

The movie has a very good cast of actors, a very good plot where most of the situations are well-constructed and has coherence during the development of them. The movie even accounts with a better soundtrack mixed and done by Michael Giacchino. The only problem with the movie is that it begins slowly than normal, but then, it reaches an important level of narrative until the end.

Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars franchise was looked at with skepticism when I first heard it happened but first Episode VII and now this? yeah I'm on board. Though the pacing could have been handled better I feel the story was well put together and was realized as it should that there wasn't going to be a happy ending by the end of this movie. One of the biggest reasons for its existence seems to be filling in a minor plot hole from the original Star Wars. Somehow, it still works. It's unclear who should get the bulk of the credit, because Tony Gilroy apparently took an overseeing role during extensive reshoots, but Gareth Edwards is credited as the only director. Props should be given to everyone involved, I think.

To get some negatives out of the way first, there are too many major characters, and with this being a more of a war movie than a sci-fi fantasy, they come off too chilly for my taste. They all have their moments, though, and serve the plot appropriately. The film shines most in its action. The set pieces are amazing. The climax features the best space combat we've ever seen, and a couple moments in particular will make fanboys go crazy. All in all, Rogue One is very enjoyalbe. The characters have enough personality to keep you invested, and the situations they find themselves in are thrilling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My god, this movie polarized so many people. People called it trash - put it in league with Phantom Menace - others thought it was the best thing ever - some of those diehard fans picked it as tied for favorite with Empire Strikes Back. In my book, it's neither of those. The first couple times, I was impressed, but probably because it's such an uncharacteristic Star Wars film and is not afraid to kill everyone off. It does not hold back for the sake of happiness and little kids - I'll give it that. It ends off in devastating fashion (kind of like a Black Mirror episode), with everyone dying for what very well could be nothing - it gets real, and the main criticism is that it's almost too predictable. But it turns into something bigger than just a Star Wars episode - which I love about it. It has more meaning and depth than most of the past episodes, and unlike its predecessors, has a coherent, honest, underlying message. It serves its purpose - to bridge the gap between episode three and four - and does well - cutting the BS and doing so efficiently and believably, but almost too well - as in the other episodes are undeserving of this as a bridge - if all the episodes are one long story, they did not set up for this chapter well, at all, and this episode has to work to fill in holes created by later installments. This is not the fault of this particular franchise, given the circumstances and the timeline in which the movies were made. Nevertheless, it feels standalone, or like it belongs in a different story. The main criticism, is that the purpose and motive for everything is almost not enough and I find I consistently have to ask myself 'Why?'. In other words, the film doesn't convince me enough of the devastation and pain they're suffering and how much a glimmer of hope means to them. I'm just supposed to assume some of these things and roll with it, as I've felt with other episodes. So, do we blame the movie for this shortcoming? No, not entirely, I don't think. As I see it, this is a chapter in one long story, and it may be the fault of the shi**y prequel trilogy, but let's not put the blame entirely on the shoulders of the trilogy - Rogue One still had the potential to do more about it - and they didn't. We learn about the stories of a couple characters, but even then, we don't know much. We put our (somewhat) blind/uninformed faith in these characters and what they believe in, but perhaps they feel the same about their cause - and maybe this is part of what the film attempts to convey - that certain ideals of hope and freedom - or rather, hope for a better future for others, that doesn't include them, trump whatever very limited understanding of the movement and the motives of those at the helm of it. As they learn to blindly accept that they won't be the heroes of the story and are, in reality, small cogs in a much bigger plan that treats them as such, and which they don't entirely understand, but fight for it anyway, applying their own personal reasons - which they may very well consistently question and remind themselves of. The one moment they lived for, their purpose is also the moment the realization that they really are cogs is most evident - they serve their function, which, depending on how the rest of the machine works may or may not bear fruit. It did of course, but barely, and unbeknownst to them. In the end, they and their suicide mission means very little - a bit of code (or hope, however you want to look at it) - but just enough that maybe life was a good bit less shi**y than it could've been for many people - certainly something worth living for. It's sort of like Interstellar meets Black Mirror.

So in addition to the underlying meaning, it also begs some interesting questions - really uncharacteristic for most Star Wars movies. In hindsight, perhaps my biggest criticism is that it's too good. It overachieves and slides seamlessly into the fourth episode, but did too well as a movie to really fit into the rest of the series. So is it's purpose to be a great movie, or to be a great (more like one that makes sense) chapter in the entire story of Star Wars? Either way, I think it did well. For the former, it needs a proper introduction. For the latter, it needs more conflict, action, and purpose in the overarching story, and needs to take place close to Revenge of the Sith.

It's refreshing to find a unique plot and meaning in a Star Wars movie. Though I said it needed more action to be a proper Star Wars movie, it's also refreshing and satisfying to find they could accomplish so much with a lot more finesse and grace, and a lot less gratuitous action. For once it wasn't the guy with the best lightsaber, it was thoughtful strategy that ultimately helped them on their mission. And though they died, and were the ones being blown up, instead of making all the chaos, what they did ultimately had much more significance and was crucial later on.

8.5+/10; strong B+

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like many people, I went to rewatch this after being let down by The Last Jedi, and boy, did I forget how much I enjoyed this film. It's basically a war movie set in the Star Wars universe, and as such isn't limited by the trappings of a Star Wars movie (no opening scrawl! No Jedi or lightsaber battles - the closing scene is an exception, but more on that later) and I remember thinking this film represented so much potential for the Star Wars license now out of Lucas's restrictive hands - imagine, an entire universe of Star Wars stories being told on the big screen without being tied down by the restrictions of a main "Star Wars" Episode. Rogue One is a great start to this Anthology universe.

Spoilers abound!

THE GOOD: Yes, there are a lot of characters, and some have criticised that we don't have time to get to know them before they all die horribly and hence the deaths aren't emotional for us - but I didn't feel that way. I thought the characters worked - Jyn was a strong female protagonist who clearly had chemistry with her father Galen, Cassian served his purpose, and Chirrut and Baze were standouts to me (even though a great many stormtroopers had to play into the stereotype and die stupidly to establish Chirrut's awesomeness). I fell for K2SO - he grew on me and his end was tragic (perhaps biased by my fondness for Alan Tudyk and his character's equally tragic end on 'Serenity'). The crew's deaths worked for me, because I felt I grew to know them enough over the course of the movie to care about them - I know this wasn't the case for everyone. When Cassian tells Bodhi the pilot "You're our only way out of here" before the final battle on Scarif, I thought this was going to be another happy-ending no-stakes Rebel tale - didn't see the grim ending coming until K-2SO took a blaster bolt to the chest.

Darth Vader in the hallway at the end - sweet Christmas. I swear there was a mass orgasm in the cinema when that scene happened, and I'm not ashamed to admit I was part of it. Yes, shameless fan service - but it worked very, very well. The OG stormtroopers, Imperial sets and the Death Star also scratched many nostalgia itches for me.

Original Trilogy cameos - I felt these were more than fan service since Rogue One was supposed to be a prequel to A New Hope. I'll admit I'm big on nostalgia so all the cameos worked for me - I was overjoyed at Grand Moff Tarkin and even loved Dr Evazan and Ponda Baba (more poignant as Dr Evazan's actor passed away shortly after my viewing).

Finally, the cinematography in this film was amazing (one of The Last Jedi's strongest points as well). The wide shots of the Star Destroyer over Jedha City, the Scarif beach, the Death Star ominously peeking over the horizon, the view of Scarif from space through the Rebel flagship's floor, the space battle itself - I found it all breathtaking.

THE BAD:
Krennic as a villain served his purpose, but I felt he was underused. In the iTunes extras, director Gareth Edwards explains he couldn't make Vader or Tarkin the villain because they had plot armour and clearly survive the movie - this is probably why they had to cook Krennic up. Mendelsohn does a good job but is clearly upstaged by Vader and Tarkin whenever they are onscreen.

Forest Whitaker was wasted as Saw Guerrera, I feel - this character has a far more interesting arc in the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, which explores his fanaticism and his hatred for what the Empire did to his sister. In this film he was a plot device.

I'm all for diversity in film - but while watching this film I could tell that the diversity was inserted on purpose. Not a bad thing, but it felt a little forced.

As with all Star Wars films, suspension of disbelief is required - stormtroopers still can't shoot for nuts, a whole battalion of them are defeated by a blind man with a stick in the beginning but by the end of the film they are a credible threat to a well-armed band of Rebels.

THE VERDICT: A thoroughly enjoyable film, and well worth Disney buying the franchise in my opinion (The Last Jedi notwithstanding). Spells a lot of potential for future Star Wars Anthology films - here's hoping Solo lives up to the mark.

But i didn't like the first part of the story, were we saw a lot of really different planet in a short time for no reason it seems. It was also less fun than the first trilogy (4-5-6).

But it grew on me, the character are a lot better than in the new trilogy, and at least as good as luke, leia, han, obiwan, lando, r2d2 etc.
The fact that we can see a lot of planets and what means living under the rules of the Empire is also great (labor camp, mining facility, etc.).
Also, there is a lot of allusion to Rebels ! I didn't see that at the time.

Definitely, the only good SW from disney, the 7 and 8 are fun and all, but empty, the 7 is a 4 with more action and less storytelling and backstory, the 8 is more original, but the characters are so bad and the 'story' so uninteresting, that it can't save this trilogy.

Seriously, if you have time to see only one of the new disney SW movie, this is the one you should look at.

It adds a richness and depth to the story of the original Star Wars while still serving as an engaging, character-driven drama with a leg to stand on its own.

As is to be expected at this point, Rogue One brings the world of the original trilogy into the 21st century with realistic, action-packed spectacle. The CGI blends in seamlessly with the practical sets and effects and gives an epic, lifelike, colossal scale to the galaxy far far away.

Although the characters are not as fully realized as they could be, the film sets them all up in such a way that it is understood who they are and what is important to them. It makes the most of the limited room for character arcs by establishing their individual goals and priorities and basing the story around their collective journey toward redemption and personal sacrifice. It's a unified character arc that is shared by the entire team of protagonists, and it's very touching. The story succeeds because it does what the Star Wars films have always done so well: it tells a complex story about people and their nature, not just about political events.

Where the film suffers most is in its antagonist. The Empire and its leaders make some unfathomably incompetent decisions that deflate a great deal of the tension from the story, particularly from the climax. Some of the dialogue is also a bit heavy handed and overly-dramatic, but most of it works quite well. It doesn't detract too much from the experience as the actors' competence largely makes up for the few screenwriting flaws.

Rogue One does drag a bit at times and is not quite as compelling as it could be, but it has plenty of charm, humor, and eye-popping action to make it fun. In addition to that, the themes of redemption and selfless sacrifice are handled with somber tact that makes this among the most thought-provoking and endearing of the Star Wars saga.

It did its job of filling the gap of time that we don't see before A New Hope starts, but it's not without its flaws. The biggest problem with this film, which leads to other problems, is that we only get one movie with this cast of characters. This was something that was set in stone from the beginning, so they had to try to make us care about these characters in a pretty tight running time. And, unfortunately, they don't execute this task as well as they could have. The rest of the movie is pretty damn good. We get some classic Star Wars scenes, and some interesting plot lines. There's also some excellent comedy in this film (much better than than Diney's other two Star Wars films). But, the characters are pretty shallow as I said and it's hard to truly care about them when the movie expects us to, and as a result the film isn't as good as it could have been. Expand

Great to see some grunt "rebels" in action. The connection to EP IV is rad. Great ending. I think they could have done 1 more scene with Vader, just give the fans what they want, it's Star Wars, not The Godfather.

A good Star Wars film involving two characters we knew nothing about, Rogue One is exactly what its title says, a Star Wars story worth telling and worth watching.

Rogue One is one of the most original stories from the Star Wars universe, and it ties in with the main story perfectly. The secret mission depicted in this film could be one of the most significant moments in the whole series.

I personally think that Rogue One is a really good film. It has a really good story and really fun action sequences. All of the Darth Vader scenes in the film were amazing. But most of the characters for me were lacking except for Jyn and K2-SO.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's the most diverse Star Wars movie to date and of course diversity is our strength. I love how Jynn Erso falls in love with a Hispanic man, that'll definitely get her brutal white Imperialist ancestors out of her children. I loved how Jynn's smelly white feet gently pounded on wet soil in this film, I found that very cute. The battle sequences were amazing and the special effects were out of this world. Could've been better if there were some transexual's, homosexuals and pansexual's in it though as a reminder that diversity is a strength. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rogue One is successful in providing a compelling narrative in which both expands the galaxy and ties directly back to A New Hope. Its biggest strength is the thrilling third act, featuring one of the best and most intense battles in the franchise. It successfully blends nostalgia (minus one out of place Easter egg) with a new cast of characters (and some returning) seamlessly into the narrative. It’s shot beautifully, thrilling, and a highlight for the Disney era of the franchise. Expand

If I'm looking at this movie super critically it deserves a 7, but I'm going to give it an 8 because it's just such a fun movie.

This movie isn't here for you to get super invested in its story. It's here to do two things: explain why the Death Star had a built flaw, and explain how the rebels got the Death Star plans. It does those two things very well.

The best part of this movie is easily the ending, and that's true for most Star Wars movies. It's very easy to understand, the action is exciting, and it's well animated, choreographed, and acted, there's a lot is going on, but it never feels overwhelming.

Finally, and I know that I'm going to sound like I'm joking when I say this but I'm not. The most refreshing thing about this movie is that the two main characters don't kiss at the end. I'm so sick of forced romance plots being shoved into movies that don't need them. This very franchise is guilty of that. They're just happy to exist next to each other, and that's refreshing in this generation of movies.

If you want a fun Star Wars movie and nothing more then I'd say pick this one up. It's very fun, it doesn't really overstay your welcome, and it keeps a good pace throughout. By the time you're getting a bit tired of the final fight, it's over and we're into A New Hope territory. It's a fun movie, and that's all it really needed to be.

Star Wars was the biggest thing from my childhood, and without any hesitation I would call this the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy. It recaptures the magic and tone that none of the subsequent movies could. It is also puts the WARS in there, this is the grittiest and most violent film of the series, not gratuitous, but putting the growing armed conflict front and center. The characters are amazing, the worlds are amazing, and the build up is amazing. Gareth Edwards did what JJ and Rian "Expectashunzzz" Johnson completely failed at, and for that, he was fired. Expand

I heard it was supposed to be a very gritty war movie but Disney changed a lot. If I saw the original vision of the director, I would be ecstatic. Unfortunately, we don’t have the directors cut. Come one Disney, release their vision. I like how their wasn’t a forced romance which was really refreshing. K2SO was really funny. To me, he had R2 energy but talked. I won’t pretend the movie is perfect. It has pacing problems and some scenes really weren’t necessary. Also, the revived Peter Cushing was really weird but I prefer it to Mandolorian Season 2 Luke. Despite the plethora of problems, it’s still better than the other Disney Star Wars movies excluding Force Awakens. I just like it and that’s my opinion. We can like bad things ok? If I had to rate it without considering my intense enjoyment, it would probably be around 5-6. Expand

This is rebellion on a whole new (epic) level. It's a fun and more grittier adventure to the galaxy far, far away.

Rogue One; like all the SW-premieres are always a fun event to experience. Fans and non-fans alike collectively get together once again for this space adventure. It's visually a big upgrade from the prequels, and it does to a certain point manage to embrace the original film's charisma. Fun, bright and enjoyable characters is a big trace -- and forget romance! This is a pure war film where companionship is everything. We follow 'Jyn Erso' and the main story is greatly focused on her, but a major letdown is the underdeveloped side-characters. They are all well presented and we get some inside to their personalities; but there's no major background nor development to characters like 'Cassian Andor'. Our main antagonist 'Orson Krennic' is very much the same. But there are some deeper layers to him, but sadly not enough to be considered a complex nor memorable villain. Because of this lack of greater depth to characters; the few emotional moments that does exist could have been even greater, because there are some great ones. The great one-liners from K-2SO is on the other hand very much appreciated, it's great that they really understand the importance of humor in the SW universe.

The story that takes place is full of action, as expected -- but more importantly; the characters are the major players here. A great character-filled first act, a more passive & calmer second act, to a stunning and perhaps too massive third act -- that's Rogue One. There're many characters and places involved in this story. All of this made some of the story uneven. It kept going, from places to places, characters to characters and so on; it became an experience that's a bit too far- stretched. It lost that "wow-factor". The second act takes a step back and didn't impress me on a personal level. It's okay but nothing really impressive got to me. But I am confident enough to say to all the big SW-fans out there that you will definitely love this film, and yes there are some really impressive action pieces -- but I never got many "wow moments". It drags on and lacks a greater long-term stamina when it comes to action. When looking at the CGI; it's a major technological achievement, except for two major CGI characters that look all other than alive. They are impressive to look at; much details, but the way they interact and talk is so fake. Add a non- Williams score that's underwhelming, well the flick got flaws. But other than that I really enjoyed it!

It's a good Star Wars movie. Not the best nor the worst. It got its flaws concerning the uneven storytelling and undeveloped side-characters, and some flaws are more serious than other. It's a beautiful story that's partially gritty and it got a stunning visualization of Vader. Add a darker tone, a very satisfying finale and an ending that manages to wrap everything together! That's Rogue One. It's the pure definition of rebellion.

The new characters seem interesting, but probably don't get enough depth. I like the underlying theme of the unsung heroes of the rebellion though I'm not sure if it ever really rang true in the end. It's mostly there as a sign post and when the main characters die it feels more like a necessary act for the films that follow as opposed to any kind of inevitability about the sacrifices and futility of war.

Mikkelsen is a bit wasted and he shouldn't have been. Mendelsohn is good, though I wish he would have gotten some juicier scenes (the opening confrontation between these two is probably the best for both).

There's a bit too much fan service in this. The CGI Tarkin and Leia aren't necessary. They were distracting and are going to age extremely poorly. It was fine for them to do it, but close-ups of their faces was needless. They should have kept the shots wide and distant, and up close with their backs turned. Vader kicking ass was both cool and eye-roll inducing. I still don't know how to feel about that. Is there nothing sacred anymore?

The first half hour is somewhat complicated as you are trying to decipher who is who and what is going on. Then you realize that most of the characters have the exact same personality and temperament. I think there is supposed to be chemistry between the two leads (Jyn and Cassian) but since they both have the same personality it fails. A new robot (K-2SO) is introduced to bring some MUCH needed humor into the movie, but not enough to compare to the original three movies made by Lucas in the 1970s. It seems recent directors forget how much humor was in the original films, part of what makes them so special. Also, the last two films are not very original. There aren't many scenes that we haven't seen before in other Star Wars Films. A good soundtrack should emphasize the mood of the scene - you should not be constantly aware of it. What saves this film are the action sequences and spectacular CGI images. The CGI of the two characters from the first trilogy are pretty amazing overall, but you can tell something is a little "off". I also applaud the ending which is not the typical Hollywood happy ending. There is enough good in the film to satisfy the typical Star Wars fan until the next installment, but don't expect perfection. Expand
