The first thing that comes to mind is because of the setting, the characters have no additional "baggage" of the greater series of Star Wars, this allows the characters to simply exist outside of the jedi/sith universe and are so personable, while being connected. I love the main character's story - the nuance portrayed with good people trying to do good within the Empire and showing the shadier side of the Rebel Alliance, this makes the whole Star Wars universe look more grounded. I enjoyed how you leave the movie identifying with the Alliance as a greater struggle, the lack of central character build up highlights die-hard rebel life and sacrifice, a friend called it a Star Wars "war movie" and I could see that. Last, props to the diversity of the cast, they weren't exaggerated stereotypes for the sake of racial and gender diversity but had lots of heart (e.g. Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen). Lastly - I teared up during the last scene, guess you'll know why once you see it. Kudos Rogue One! Expand

Star Wars has managed to create a truly dramatic and dark story. Great cast of actors and soundtrack perfectly complemented the whole picture. I would love to see more dark Star Wars like this. Also, the creators did not stint on a couple of nostalgic moments, showing us old and beloved characters. From a small minus, you can cancel a slightly bad attempt to return to the screens of characters whose actors have already left this world, which is why these computer faces and all their facial expressions are very striking. A great movie that gives a amazing back story to the how Princess Leia and the resistance got the plans of the Death Star so that the could destroy it. I love this movie and is one of my favorite movies I've seen in awhile. The performances from Felicity Jones and Diego Luna were spectacular. The visual effects and action scenes were fantastic. I loved the new robot K-2SO he was hilarious. The story and screenplay were great. Michael Giacchino's musical score was very good to. Also the cinematography was done well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely brilliant choice of storyline, taking one or two lines from the original 1977 film and hooking in an entire film so that it segues seamlessly directly into the beginning of the original -- this film ends apparently only a few hours before the opening scene of the first "Star Wars". And that, very powerfully, gives us the feeling of having come "full circle" after forty years, after this Odyssey of disappointing sequels and prequels, here we are again -- back at the beginning! The real thing! Rogue One may well be the most magnificent prequel ever made, and it's the only "true" Star Wars prequel.

It gets off to a somewhat shaky start, and some of the side characters and subplots are half-hearted and unnecessary. If only those had been trimmed and tightened up, this would be a towering masterpiece like the original film.

NEVERTHELESS - once we get to the main event, and the battle drama unfolds in all its glory, all these minor concerns are swept away in a grand finale of wondrous spectacle, with a final sequence of utter genius.

The heroine's exit would have been more dramatic if she died wounded on the tower right after completing the transmission of the plans -- laughing defiance in the face of the Death Star commander on the screen just before they fired and blew her away. That's how I would have done it, haha!

Rogue one had to be one of the most underrated star wars movies and one of the most underrated movies of 2016. great action, AMAZING cgi as well, its what you would want from a star wars movie. But there is 1 issue, the characters aren't developed (except for jyn) like in other installments in the series. i can understand if you don't like that. But that's not the point of it, they weren't meant to be in any other movie, it makes sense *spoilers* that they all die, for a heroic sacrifice to the rebellion, but the gritty and dark theme of the movie plays out perfectly. For me, it was the last Star Wars film I can say I really enjoyed. Last Jedi and Solo left SO much to be desired, primarily because of Disney's need to inject politics into their films now. It just doesn't work for me. Nor does hiring an actor or actress for a lead roll who runs their mouth during interviews for the film about everything else other than the film they should be talking about. Sorry Disney but people are voting with their wallets now. Rogue one was a great film and I hope IX can bring back the fans. Expand

Rogue One is thankfully another admirable Hollywood film that sincerely honors sacrifice, persistence, and hope. Of the Star Wars films, it's probably the best since the original three, and it links fairly well to the first.

It would be nice to know more about some of the characters, to sense even more deeply what they've suffered, but the film's focus on the story of the ensemble and how it miraculously comes together leads to another fascinating point: Arguably its handling of the idea of the Force or of a force behind the force may be more suggestive of a beneficent divine Providence, and thus closer to the Judeo-Christian God, than in the original three films which seemed to say that the Force requires balance--the light side requires a dark side, and so on (e.g. any victory of the good side is always only temporary, to be followed by the ascendancy of the dark side due to the purported balanced nature of the Force). The new film's seeming shift is a positive development. That notion of balance, of equal eternal opposition of good and evil, failed (even in the fictional world) to adequately or helpfully distinguish between good and evil so as to recognize good as higher than or better than or transcendent over evil. One could even argue from this development that the original films involved untrustworthy narration that is only now being revealed. Perhaps full investment in the themes stated above required this development. Hope would be unfounded without it.

And in its more unmitigated sense of a beneficent divine Providence watching over, superintending events, it feels reminiscent of the divine Providence and Creator (Eru Iluvitar) behind the scenes in The Lord of the Rings. But I guess time will tell if Star Wars really moves in this direction.

Showing the dark side of the rebels and having them kill good people in a dirty war does not belong in a black and white story about light versus dark, good versus evil.

The general consensus of last years Force Awakens was that the spirit of the original trilogy returned. However, the problem with Episode VII is in how the spirit is captured identically. In having returned so reverently, the franchise needed to display a willingness to tinker. Enter the newest cinematic addition to Star Wars. Rogue One is a balanced movie of hope and despair. The last Star Wars movie to find this magical balance in tone is The Empire Strikes Back. Likewise, Rogue One finds a unique synergy between old and new. The first anthology Star Wars movie works in its inevitable lead-in to an almost forty-year-old classic with a sense of invigoration. The movie smartly covers up modern filmmaking conventions with amazing throwbacks to the original trilogy. Seventies style facial hair can still be found on the Rebel pilots while a few smart cameos make the Star Wars initiated feel at home. The amount of Star Warsness to the film allows director Gareth Edwards to comfortably recton A New Hope. A problem with Rogue One is how the film can only be best enjoyed by a Star Wars fan. Rogue One is a decent enough war movie. The dogfights are exciting. The characters are charming and funny enough. The overall plot can’t be fully enjoyed without having seen A New Hope. In addition, the cinematic impact the film has on the future of this storied franchise also can't be appreciated by an outsider. Rogue One features the most diverse cast of any Star Wars movie... as well as the franchises more intense scenes. The mentioned scenes make up some of the best moments in a Star Wars movie to date. Rest assured the future of the franchise is in the very capable hands of Disney. Rouge One is how a franchise should make the old relevant. Expand

I enjoyed the ensemble cast, and as usual the visual effects and battle scenes are top notch. Some of the dialogue was too exposition heavy though, and the cutting to so many different locations got confusing. But they do feel cut from the same cloth. The Force Awakens and Rogue One are better movies than the prequels, but feel cut from a different cloth. I found Rogue One to be a thoroughly enjoyable flick. The plot made sense and didn't step on the original films. I liked the diverse imperial bases. The film has minor flaws, such as some of the acting talent being wasted. Forest Whitaker and Mads Mikkelsen can do more/better! It seemed like K2SO got all the good comedic lines. Also a couple of times (minor spoiler) a character appears where the original actor has aged substantially or passed on. The approach taken to that seemed a little uncanny valley to me. Ultimately though the film lacks much of an underlying theme. Which makes it a flick, even though its a good one. Finally RIP Carrie Fisher. Expand

The episode III½.

So this is like a bridge between the original trilogy and the next three prequels. A story where the main characters from the original tale are not involved. Being a big fan of this franchise, I loved it. I did not expect big, so got entertained well. But pity that this wonderful characters are not going to return. This is just a one-off film. For seeing its overwhelming success, there could be a prequel, which has a very very slim chance.

The story was like that had started in a half way. That's why I wanted a prequel to tell us the Galen Erso's point of view story. When he has been taken back to the base to work for the Empire, his daughter is the only one who escapes from there. After a few years later the grown- up daughter, Jyn, end up on the rebel's side. When she hints a plan for them to strike the Empire, nobody considers it. But a rogue gang forms where they all does according to her saying. That's the story, and how it all ends are the rest.

The story was simple, but the action-adventures were good. Like what a 'Star Wars' fans want to see. The main drawback was there's no familiar faces around. Even the original franchise style of title and credit presentation was off the beat. Though there were cameos. Darth Vade, Princess Leia, R2D2 and 3PO, including a small lightsabre fight at the end, just to satisfy the fanboys. Overall a worthy film, otherwise it would have not earned one billion at the box office, making one of the top 10 of all time.

Rogue one's cast has more in common with Han Solo than with a Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia. The message of the movie: little acts of bravery can have important consequences.

The MacGuffin that makes the movie go is to find the weakness of that big death star moon build by the father of Jen. Find the father, find the weakness. A message from dad reaches the rebels in the form of a pilot and so Jen has to be found as to gain access to dad by way of Saw Gerrera, a rebel so extreme that even the Rebel Alliance frowns on him. Since he happens to be Jen's surrogate father it might be that he listens to her instead of pulling the trigger.

Does that sound overtly complex? Well, it does, but if you just tag along with the movie it is just one of points in the tale that you get dragged along. And tag along is the only thing that you can do as the movie does not let go. I would say, it keeps almost the same frantic pace as that crazy movie Fury Road. And that is the main weakness of this movie. Despite interesting characters there are too many of them and not enough time for any of them. The upshot is that you don't care if someone sacrifices his life, which happens a lot in this movie. They join up and they get killed. Next! Even when there is an important emotional moment in the movie it quickly gets trampled over in a desire to keep the pace. Without some dwelling on emotions heroes become two dimensional figures and their sacrifices have no emotional impact.

Still, Rogue One one is one of the better Star Wars movies in my opinion. It would have been better if there had been some more time spend on character development and less on jumping from one place to the next out of fear that some moments of reflection will scare the audience out of the theater. A pity because the essence of this movie: little people can bring hope loses a lot of its emotional currency.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. [Excerpt from Full Review]

I will do my best to avoid the majority of spoilers, but for the most part the plot of the film is pretty straight forward and simplistic, similar to that of the original film. Whereas the original’s premise was to complete a suicide run and destroy the evil Empire’s operational battle station known as the Death Star, Rogue’s goal is to obtain the plans for said station. This film also really puts it into perspective just how close the Rebel Alliance came to failing every step of the way leading up to the destruction of the original Death Star. Rogue One puts this into the limelight in ways that the original film never seemed to seriously do, and as a result is much darker than any Star Wars movie we’ve watched to date. It may not be “killing younglings” dark, but the tone is definitely a lot more gritty and the stakes are a lot realer despite us knowing how it will ultimately end.

Although this film went the route of the prequels in having a relatively star-studded cast as opposed to unknowns in the lead roles, I think it helped for sure. Felicity Jones is phenomenal and each member of the rogue’s gallery that comprises the Rebel Alliance as well as some of the new faces of the Empire are fleshed out and portray their parts quite well. I was a bit disappointed but not altogether surprised that some of the more familiar roles and faces didn’t play as big a part as I had initially speculated that they would. Forest Whitaker plays grizzled guerilla veteran and leader Saw Gerrera (notably from the animated series), however his role seemed to be relegated to a little bit of backstory, tying the mission to Jones’ character, and tying up Gerrera’s arc in the universe as well. Despite that and despite Peter Cushing being given a little bit too much screentime and this bordering on irreverence considering he could’ve easily made his initial cameo and then the other scenes could’ve been pulled off without his appearance, my gripes are relatively few.

The characters themselves, while not necessarily so fleshed out seeing as this is a one-shot kind of one-time story for the majority of them, played their parts perfectly and seemed to mesh on-screen. I thought the melding of new and old characters was promising and worked much better than it seemed to with the original trilogy characters meeting The Force Awakens’ characters in episode seven. While I’m still curious as to what exactly Episode Eight will entail and what exactly it will be called, I cannot deny that Rogue One will be a success and admittedly deserves it. It has it flaws here and there but a simplistic story is not one of them. We knew where it was going to go based upon the time period and universe’s chronology and history, but even with that linear path set in stone and in mind, the story managed to do a lot of things that kept it fresh as well. Yes, by the end it is depressing and dark indeed, but there’s still that glimmer of faint hope on the horizon that will eventually blossom into the roaring wildfire of rebellion come Episode Six.

I was pleasantly surprised that the film actually concludes virtually with the opening scene of Episode Four, as that really put into perspective where exactly it falls in the scheme of things and also how brutally efficient the Empire is with cracking down on the Rebellion, despite never being able to train efficient Storm troopers in the art of hitting targets. I loved that the cast was as diverse and attentive to detail as it was, as well as the strong presence of Jones in the lead role, shining in more than a couple of moments in the film. I also particularly liked Donnie Yen’s character and would be interested to see some more detail and thought put into the origins of his organization- the ‘Wills’ and all that Force-related stuff has been mentioned before, just look back at Yoda and Qui-gon Jinn’s mention in Episode Three. There were plenty of memorable moments, special effects to make any fan drool, and tiny homages and moments made specifically with other moments in mind. All in all, not only is Rogue One a solid film on its own, but it is a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe and will hopefully prove that even stories outside of the main episodes and outside of the recognized or unrecognized expanded universe are welcome too.

The plot is solid and there are MANY nods to everything in the Star Wars Universe. Sometimes you just have to listen to the background sounds and announcements. I love the whole way everything unfolded all the way up until the end. Then, in the last seconds, they drop a plot hole. Not a plot hole for the movie, but where it fits into the universe of Star Wars. Doesn't mean that the movie up until that point was bad. I give credit where credit is due. It just did a small bit of overreach in those last seconds. This movie hits on all the points that it should. It is one of the better movies to come from this universe. It has a hard, war edge that I see spawned the comment that it is the first movie to acknowledge that there is a war going on. While not totally accurate, the sentiment is. It is no Empire, but it certainly hits a bit better than the Force Awakens.

By the way, a lot of the scenes that ended up in the commercials are not in the movie. I don't know which is the reshoot and not, but there is a ton of scenes in those commercials that are not in the movie. This actually makes me hope for a definitive/director's cut that will be as additive as Batman v Superman. This movie needed to be just a bit longer to properly provide exposition.

This is rebellion on a whole new (epic) level. It's a fun and more grittier adventure to the galaxy far, far away.

Rogue One; like all the SW-premieres are always a fun event to experience. Fans and non-fans alike collectively get together once again for this space adventure. It's visually a big upgrade from the prequels, and it does to a certain point manage to embrace the original film's charisma. Fun, bright and enjoyable characters is a big trace -- and forget romance! This is a pure war film where companionship is everything. We follow 'Jyn Erso' and the main story is greatly focused on her, but a major letdown is the underdeveloped side-characters. They are all well presented and we get some inside to their personalities; but there's no major background nor development to characters like 'Cassian Andor'. Our main antagonist 'Orson Krennic' is very much the same. But there are some deeper layers to him, but sadly not enough to be considered a complex nor memorable villain. Because of this lack of greater depth to characters; the few emotional moments that does exist could have been even greater, because there are some great ones. The great one-liners from K-2SO is on the other hand very much appreciated, it's great that they really understand the importance of humor in the SW universe.

The story that takes place is full of action, as expected -- but more importantly; the characters are the major players here. A great character-filled first act, a more passive & calmer second act, to a stunning and perhaps too massive third act -- that's Rogue One. There're many characters and places involved in this story. All of this made some of the story uneven. It kept going, from places to places, characters to characters and so on; it became an experience that's a bit too far- stretched. It lost that "wow-factor". The second act takes a step back and didn't impress me on a personal level. It's okay but nothing really impressive got to me. But I am confident enough to say to all the big SW-fans out there that you will definitely love this film, and yes there are some really impressive action pieces -- but I never got many "wow moments". It drags on and lacks a greater long-term stamina when it comes to action. When looking at the CGI; it's a major technological achievement, except for two major CGI characters that look all other than alive. They are impressive to look at; much details, but the way they interact and talk is so fake. Add a non- Williams score that's underwhelming, well the flick got flaws. But other than that I really enjoyed it!

It's a good Star Wars movie. Not the best nor the worst. It got its flaws concerning the uneven storytelling and undeveloped side-characters, and some flaws are more serious than other. It's a beautiful story that's partially gritty and it got a stunning visualization of Vader. Add a darker tone, a very satisfying finale and an ending that manages to wrap everything together! That's Rogue One. It's the pure definition of rebellion.

*psst don't enter this film expecting much Vader.

Personal rating: 82/100 Critical rating: 70/100

The direction feels very different at first, feeling more handheld at not super Star Wars-esque because of its grittier more grounded style, but this is great and works for the film. It ends up making it feel like a real war and struggle for the rebellion and it ends up changing later towards the end in tonal shift and direction to blend into A New Hope.
Pacing is a little odd at first, but the first section is interesting enough to keep you very invested, especially with all the character introductions. The second act is a littler quieter and a bit of a lull but still has enough going on and differs itself from the rest of the film to keep it fresh. The last section is an intense all out action masterpiece, and really gives a space feeling of something similar to the end battle of Saving Private Ryan. Characters are well enough written for you to enjoy and like them all, however they are a little underdeveloped for the most part and you end up wanting more from them. This ends up not hindering the film too much since the film is a standalone. This film does carry itself well, it knows when to be dark without over doing it and changes location at a nice rate with a clear understanding of where and what folk are doing.
This also the first film where Darth Vader is actually fully terrifying, he is almost like an insanely powerful sci fi MikeMyers. Even thoug he isn’t in it much, his presence is palpable.
The good thing about Rogue One also is that it doesn’t try to keep using nostalgia to interest its viewers (which TFA did a lot) but does have plenty of nice little easter eggs.
The droid K2SO in the film is also the comic relief of it, but whilst a few jokes hit the mark a lot are unnecessary and too forced in, and there is (like TFA) a lot of cheesy 2016 throwaway jokes just put in there. Disney need to learn to restrain themselves from certain jokes, and when they do put them in they need to understand when to end the joke and how to fully have them come across.
Last two complaints, the new score for the film is cheesy and doesn’t fit the film at all, and really takes away from it as a whole sadly. Dubbing John Williams over it would be very cheap, but to be honest it would probably make the film feel more epic and fit more. There is also some questionable CGI characters in the film which just look unnatural in the film but still don’t ruin it too much.
Overall, this film diverges enough away from Star Wars to make it feel fresh but also very nicely connects itself to the original trilogy. Action is awesome yet characters are a little underdeveloped, special effects are gorgeous but score is disappointing. It is a tragic war film set in the Star Wars universe, and Gareth Edwards did something brave with what he had.
Bravo to you sir.

It's a classic father-daughter story, where you come to care about the characters. The robot droid was hysterical, honestly. Also, the tribute to characters such as Grand Moff Tarkin, was believable and plain creepy that they brought an actor who's been dead since the 90's, back to life. What's Rogue One (RO) like?: Story-wise, it's like other past films where the protagonists had to risk their lives to infiltrate the opposite side so as to steal something, except that here, there are also spaceships and lasers... It was better than TFA, but it also has several problems. >
Pros: >
1. TFA broke many of the conventions and principles behind how The Force works and how things work in general! For no apparent reason, Rey knew how to pilot a complex spaceship and how to fight with a lightsaber without having been trained on either task beforehand. (This is all down to JJ Abrams. On Star Trek (2009) it was inspiring, but Into Darkness and TFA just made me question his destructive creativity. His earlier films were also quite unruly. I've decided to never watch his films again.) RO avoids this by not invoking the use of the force that often. Most events made sense. This film is a fitting addition to the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
>
2. The battle scene on Scarif was nice. >
Cons:
>
1. RO is only slightly better than TFA. The story is less contrived than in TFA. However, it was still rather ridiculous that our heroes need to travel to so many places and to go through so many hoops to get the jobs done. Some parts seemed drawn out. >
2. Apart from Jyn, the other main characters were not developed sufficiently, in the rush to show the action scenes. >
3. The actor playing Commander Krennic seemed to be over-acting, all the time. He was unnecessarily angry and devilish all of the time.
>
4. The CGI in this film has some significant flaws. The Star Destroyers look like Lego pieces when in front of a bright background, while the fully computer-generated Grand Moff Tarkin looked... computer-generated. The eyes! You have to sort out the problem with the static eyes! The production had $200m and these problems were not solved?
>
5. I thought the destruction of Alderaan in ANH was the first time the Death Star fired its main laser and destroyed a planet? In ANH, Grand Moff Tarkin said, “Princess Leia, before your execution, I’d like you to join me for a ceremony that will make this battle station operational… In a way, you have determined the choice of the planet that is to be destroyed FIRST. Since you are reluctant to provide us with the location of the Rebel base, I have chosen to test this station's destructive power on your home planet of Alderaan.” Furthermore, Obi-Wan only felt the pain from the destruction of Alderaan and not from any moon or planet before that. The firing of the main laser in RO was not mere a test. Has this film created a continuity error? >
6. The new musical score was a strange and horrible choice. The score rises to a crescendo in a haphazard way and then abruptly drops and goes all over the place. Which inexperienced composer was hired to do this? A Golden Raspberry Award is coming up.
> 7. There was no need to show Leia at the end of RO. (It is not a spoiler that she's coming up next in ANH.) The CGI was inadequate and the scene should have been left out.

How would the different age groups rate it?
Children: Excellent
Teenagers: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Good
Old adults: Average.
My rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It's worth it pay to watch it in the cinemas.

It is a good movie, but by no means a great one, or better than episode VII, it does what it pointed to do. The only thing i really hated was the CG characters... They just looked fake.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A gloomy and probably unnecessary StarWars story it is. However the film is so well acted and well done that it's definitely not bad. While there's some pretty bad ass Vader appearances. Which makes us forget the disappointing last time we saw Vader on the big screen in 2005. He gets way cooler lines than "Where's Padme ?" and "Noooooo!" ”
I also liked how they used to bring back dead actors from the original or to make certain actors from the original look younger. They should make a First Order film leading into Force Awakens and use that effect. My complaint is something that hit me after the film. This a big spoiler: Just that after anyone part of the Rogue One team does their part of the mission, then they're expendable like right after. Time for them to die. Which happens one by one after each character has done what they were supposed to. I didn't expect any survivors from the start but the way it was done was some-what lazy.

The best Disney Star Wars so far. The well-written story, believable characters. Both sides of the conflict are shown to be competent and driven by reasonable motivations. Decent CGI, Tarkin looks almost real.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. overall rogue one is great. it is a fun sci-fi movie. it is a tense action movie. it is a thought-provoking war film. it is almost perfect as a star wars fill-in-the-gap story, justly expanding the star wars universe. easily better than the prequels, on many levels better than e7, and potentially up there with empire. much darker in tone and visually one of the strongest (if not the strongest) of all the star wars films to date. it does an excellent job of location, set, character & costume design. it captures, matches & improves upon the original 70’s future-long-ago look & feel; particularly compared to the prequels coming-off as too squeaky-clean and cartoony, where obvious green-screen 'sound-stage sets' clashed w/ cgi backgrounds that actually came-off as claustrophobic or making the actors seem lost-in-place, rogue one feels much more authentically 'there' and breathable, artfully integrating cgi & traditional effects with moveable characters. it even stands out compared to abram’s understandable but heavy-handed return to reliance on traditional sets & mechanics… for example, edward’s film improves & expands upon the rebel base yavin 4 locale, while keeping consistent with what you may have imagined was just off camera 40 years ago in e4; much more-so than abram’s disappointing teletubbies green hills + cement roads to simulate the rebel base in e7. many aspects of r1 kept me feeling like this was the star wars film i had been longing for, or at least adequately filling in many of the blanks the original insinuated. there is a sense of depth and history here missing from recent star wars films; diverse planets, ancient temples, exotic creatures & locales feel much more realized & alive, part of a larger universe than maz kanata’s isolated b&b cantina-remake. i’ve heard understandable complaints about the pacing, it does feel a little bit long at times, but i don't hold that against it and can't think of much i would cut. speaking of cuts, as others have noted several scenes or lines of dialogue from the trailers are missing in the final film, but mostly this is just a curiosity considering the theatrical cut is still almost 2.5 hours. there is also understandable chatter that some of the new characters are not as realized as one might ‘hope’ for. the acting and interplay between the two lead actors felicity jones & diego luna is excellent and among the best in any star wars film. if their characters leave you longing for more, it is a compliment rather than a knock, and the context of the film in the larger star wars universe perfectly justifies the amount of attention they get. my biggest complaints would be trivial: spoiler alerts: it is said that you are not supposed to notice a good movie soundtrack, but how can you say that about star wars? the fact that giacchino scored this and not williams is apparent in parts. a few times the music strikes up and you are expecting classic star wars to come belting out but it doesn’t, and feels like it falls a bit short. there are other moments though, where the soundtrack uses non-traditional instruments to provide a more other-wordy feel than previous films… it's cool that grand moff tarkin is back in a significant role, but he does look obviously cgi as others have noted. Vader has a weird, kind of glaring overhanging neck issue with his helmet which bugged me (and others), though otherwise it was great to have him back as a bad-ass post hayden era, the closing moments with Vader were great and among his best, if not short-lived & offer promise of more to come. Donnie Yen was a cool character but somewhat annoying with the overly-repetitive ‘hare-krishna’ force mantra, it was a bit ‘forced’ that he's so close to a jedi but technically not. a particular scene in jeddah surrounding an imperial 'tank' carrying kyber crystals felt especially clunky, the tank looked clumsy and out of place, that scene struck me the most as a mechanical set, seeing the tank struggling to maneuver on the ground with dozens of flying ships everywhere else was reminiscent of being stuck on the track of the bumpy indiana jones ride at disneyland. the new robot side-kick ‘K’ was mostly well-written and well-performed by tudyk and provided good, consistent comic relief. and major kudos to how many of the main characters were dead by the end of the film, that is lacking in so many movies and particularly bold of edwards, kennedy & disney. as an ‘old-head’ traditional star wars fan i found r1 to be less-than perfect, better than i expected, slightly more satisfying than e7, a huge improvement over the prequel trilogy, and ultimately excited for the future of the star wars universe being placed into the hands of new talent... ps: got to agree with AdamCM: "the best Star Wars since Empire" Expand

Am I going to see at least one memorable Star Wars character in this film? Well, there isn't that many since this is supposed to be a spin-off. Am I going to experience the same feeling like the previous Star Wars films? Yes, and it's pretty unusual for a spin-off. Lastly, do these new characters make me want to see this movie? If you want to exactly know what happens to these characters, then yes. We can't tell you what happened to these characters for sure as that would lead to spoilers. Rogue One takes its main base and separates everything but left the feelings of the film just for the beneficial fans. It's not near a masterpiece, but at least it's trying to be something and that something is what Rogue One should be anyways. Expand
