Tarantino is brilliant for making this movie and opened my eyes to a time period and vibe I haven't seen until now. All the dialogue from the two main characters is what makes this movie what it is, Leo and Brad bring their A game. Even when they are talking about something that may seem to make no sense in relation to the story, the dialogue finds a way to be relevant within the story and progress the characters. Al Pacino was also amazing in his role even through I liked his role in The Irishman a bit more. The ending seals the deal for why I love this movie and all the craziness it entails. I am glad I saw this movie and I only regret not seeing it in the theater. Expand

"Great setting, great acting, bad story = 0" , can anyone explain that logic? Its hilarious to see that so many people dont understand this movie or got too many mental problems to sit thru the whole story. I think its fantastic, the story about two falling careers. Leo and Brad are fantastic together, we need to see these two do more movies. Margot Robbie should have gotten a nomination for this if it wasnt for Bombshell. And all the little flirts with old movies and stories. If you dont know how the story of Sharon Tate end in real life, you should really google it. So sad. Thanks for this amazing story Quentin. In my point of view, this movie needs to be watched at least because it mirrors the particular period of American history. It guides the audiences through the atmosphere of 1969. This movie raises acute questions that worry and cause a stir the minds of people nowadays too. Great acting and wonderful script unconditionally attract attention to this picture.

'Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood' is a kind of a fairy tale about Sharon Tate's life, which have never come true in reality.

The story, the acting, the atmosphere, the narration, everything is just right here! Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and the sadly recently deceased Luke Perry deliver a top performance here. I have to congratulate Quentin Tarantino, that was another real goal! Those who know the true sad and gruesome backstory of Sharon Tate will be surprised at the twist at the end of the film. This is real popcorn cinema, awesome! Thank you Mr Tarantino! Brilliant! Expand

This is the situation I found myself in when, a week ago and 2/3 into the film, the entire theater complex went dark due to a power failure and I had to catch the last 1/3 of the film 7 days later. So now, with that burden disclosed and acknowledging that I never was really a fan of Mr. DiCaprio, I must confess that I found the film not only entertaining but well written and well acted too. Mr. DiCaprio was thoroughly believable as a “Clint Eastwood type” who, like Clint, goes from Western TV actor (i.e. “Rawhide”) to spaghetti-western star, as his character's life ultimately interwines with his neighbors on Il Cielo Drive in the hills above Sunset Blvd.and, ultimately, the intruding members of the Manson family. Brad Pitt is absolutely superb in his role as the friend of and stunt man for the DiCaprio TV western star.

Having lived and been part of the early days of TV as well as the Tate-LaBianca killings, the film is really a trip along nostalgia lane as the viewer is once again reminded of the many landmarks in Los Angeles in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Perhaps this is why those who have no familiarity with the city or the time in which the film takes place found it less enjoyable to watch. All that being said, this is a movie about Hollywood and those who earned their livelihood in it aided by excellent performances from its to two leading men and a host of major stars in cameo appearances. I give the film a 9 for, despite its almost 3 hours in length, for me, at least, it was a worthwhile and positive theatrical experience.

Tarantino is the best kind of filmmaker. He's the kind who has such an appreciation for everything that's come before him, but is always looking for something new. He infuses all of his characters with his own style of catchy dialogue, whilstTarantino is the best kind of filmmaker. He's the kind who has such an appreciation for everything that's come before him, but is always looking for something new. He infuses all of his characters with his own style of catchy dialogue, whilst still ensuring that they all have their own memorable personalities whilst assembling casts who know how to bring these characters to life. At a time when it feels far too many mainstream films have become predictable, you never really know exactly where a Tarantino film is going to take you. One moment you'll be watching a boxer on the run from a crime boss, before all of a sudden those same characters are tied up next to gimp as Comanche starts to play.

It's this same unpredictability that underscores the entirety of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's similar to Pulp Fiction in the sense that it doesn't really follow any traditional narrative and instead lets the characters drive the story as they go through their daily lives. First there's Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton. He's a TV actor who's always on the verge of his big break, but the biggest roles are always just out of reach as they always go to other contemporaries like Steve McQueen. He's still doing well in the industry with a recognisable name, a house in Hollywood and receiving offers to star in spaghetti westerns. But in spite of all his success, he feels as though his life stuck in westerns doesn't let him live up to his full potential as an actor, as just like a lot of people at the time he views the spaghetti westerns as a cheap form of entertainment. Similar to how the current age of Hollywood is coming to an end, he fears that he's no longer in his prime.

He's supported by his best pal and close friend Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. Without any stunts to do, he finds himself stuck doing chores for Rick, driving him around wherever he needs to go and picking him up when he gets down. In contrast to Rick who reaps the success of his life in Hollywood, Cliff is both the metaphorical and literal punching bag of the industry, but he's so easy going and care free that he doesn't give a damn. He's just happy to help out his buddy and is described as being "more than a friend and less than a wife."

Finally there's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate. Whilst Rick and Cliff are both starting to fall out of the industry, Tate is very much on the rise as the talk of the town as her career is still on the rise and embraces it with a very unselfish sense of joy. One of her best moments is just seeing the genuine pleasure she gets from being in the audience and seeing how much the audience is enjoying her performance.

In the background of all this, Manson and his followers keep popping up throughout the film. On the one hand, their presence creates a creepy atmosphere whenever they're on screen with the film becoming much quieter, especially when Cliff visits the Manson ranch and we see them thriving in the broken set of old western shows watching his every move in complete paranoia. But similar to Stuntman Mike in Death Proof, he shows the pathetic bumbling side of these killers with the script showing nothing but disdain for both their viewpoint and their actions.

Though even with the underlined bleakness present within the setting of a dying age of Hollywood history, just like the fairy tale nature of the title suggests we do get drenched in the culture of late 60's Hollywood. Stars like Steve McQueen and Bruce Lee will randomly pop up. Whenever the characters are driving the background is always filled with billboards and fashion plucked from the era. There's even a series of both real and fake radio ads throughout the film, some of which are even included in the films soundtrack to create a real radio experience.

But more than anything else, Taranino's love of cinema really shines through, with characters going into great detail on how an actor like Rick would operate in this time through guest spots on network shows and the filming techniques employed by spaghetti western filmmakers. It's a true snapshot of life in 60's Hollywood and Tarantino's love letter to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age. It's also filled with so much great comedy, memorable character moments and ends on such a high note that the films 2 hour 41 minute runtime just leaves you wanting more.

Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood is one thing and one thing only; Quentin Tarantino’s beautifully crafted dreamy love letter to cinema!

With his newest feature, the current master of cinema’s vision reminds us why movies are cool again. For the first time, in a long time, there’s a film that begs to be seen, not in the comfort of your own home, not on your Netflix cue on an airplane, but in front of a silver screen, with an audience and you damn right…some popcorn. Once Upon A Time is less a film and more an experience; one where the bustling hot summer days are corrected by the high intensity air conditioning of the multiplexes; one where the theatres are a safe haven for summer love and first kisses, an experience where going to the movies is as magical as popping your cherry. That’s what a Tarantino film is like; just like when I first went to go see his Grindhouse experience for the first time, Tarantino is a visionary old soul, hell bent on sharing his memorable cinematic experiences of his past, with us today. If you are a cinephile and don’t know about Quentin Tarantino’s work, most, if not all people will tell you that you should just quit now, but I digress. Tarantino worked at a blockbuster in Hollywood, California in his early years, consuming as much cinema as possible. One of his most revered quotes to date about film is his famous line that “When people asked me if I went to film school I tell them no. I went to films”. Funny enough, this quote captures the essence of Tarantino and his canon; an individual who entered the world of cinema out of the sheer love of watching films, just like myself.

As an artist myself and lover of film, I never went to film school also. Hopefully, as someone who would eventually love to make their own films one day, I feel that this is one of the many reasons why I admire, as well as, so heavily identify with Tarantino. I also learned about films by watching them. Just like myself, the influence in Tarantino films is wide ranging. His largest inspirations draws from the New Wave Gangster pictures of France, crafted by the likes of Jean Pierre Melville, Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. All of the names listed are absolute giants in celluloid and contributed in my opinion the most to modern cinema that features, as Godard would say, “A girl and a gun”. According to Godard, that is pretty much all that is necessary to making a good motion picture. Other notable Influences on Tarantino would be essentially any film from the 1970’s because that is the era when he began to understand and study cinema, an era of films by Don Siegel, Sergio Leone and George Roy Hill.

Yet while many are quick to label QT as a scam artist and artistic thief, I feel like it is my duty to rectify that notion. Before continuing on, it has to be said that art copies art, inspiration inspires and according to Mark Twain, there is no such thing as originality, only levels of authenticity. Therefore, it is my extreme pleasure to introduce and name QT a master of authenticity for his cinema. Just like when Sergio Leone remade a Kurosawa picture and developed it into the Dollars trilogy, or when Christopher Nolan gave his interpretation of the Dark Knight recently, or when Martin Scorsese won his first Oscar for remaking a Japanese film and later naming it The Departed, art is not our subject, WE are its subject. Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood is the iconic director’s masterful indulgence in everything that he loves about movies and everything we should love, too! Aside from Taratino, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood isn’t just one man’s magnum opus, but a collection of so many talented artists, starting with its cast. The film opens with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt going for a cruise to a watering hole. Dicaprio stars as Rick Dalton, a good ole’ boy from Missouri who drinks for hydration and smokes for oxygen. Once the leading man in television and film, appearing in western serials, one aptly titled Bounty Law, Dalton is on the tail end of his acting career. The Midwestern-American cowboy style Dalton knew all too well, is being suffocated and changed, no thanks to the foreign influenced, free-loving hippie movement. While DiCaprio’s Dalton emits a certain swagger that charms many, the audience comes to realize that this ‘swagger’ is less a personality trait and more a clearly stubborn, unchangeable style and resilience to the conforming of the times around him. According to Rick, Rick Dalton is still big; it’s the pictures that just got small. While it may be hard to argue this notion, DiCaprio’s riotous as the comedic force of the film. Blending well with Tarantino’s signature writing style for a second time, DiCaprio’s Dalton stutters, stammers and then collectively pulls himself together in front of a camera.

I guess for Tarantino lovers, the lack of gratuitous violence (in most of the film) might be a disappointment. I just enjoyed it for what it is, the clever writing, the clever dialog, the ever-so-human characters and their weaknesses (except for creepy 40 year old in an 8 year old body.)
Perfect? Nope. Ground-breaking? Nope. Several hours of joy for movie lovers? Yes.

As far as I'm concerned, the man's a genius and has never made a single bad film! Every new film of his is like Christmas for me, as I always eagerly await to see what he has in store for us next with each new film, as his style is just so unique and in-your-face. So you can probably imagine my excitement when I found out that his next film would be set during the golden age of Hollywood during the time of Sharon Tate and Charles Manson, star an amazing ensemble cast headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, and would pay homage to films and Hollywood in general. That's pretty much all of my favorite things wrapped up in one spectacular package! And I'm more than happy to report that it did not disappoint and delivers on virtually every front! Granted, those familiar with Tarantino's style are probably aware of how ultraviolent his films are throughout, so it was a little surprising to see most of the action and gore in the film's final half-hour or so, but he more than makes up for this with an excellent screenplay and dialogue that's come to be expected from him, along with a colorful array of witty characters and moments throughout. DiCaprio and Pitt, two of Hollywood's biggest stars, are paired together perfectly and work off each other hilariously throughout the entire film! I only wish Sharon Tate (played beautifully by Margot Robbie) could've been utilized a little more in the film. Overall, Tarantino may have pumped the brakes a little more on the action and violence for this film, but when the violence finally does kick in in the last half-hour, for me it was well worth it! And like I said before, the always-entertaining characters and dialogue, along with plenty of love nods to other Hollywood films, actors, and icons made it such an enjoyable watch! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quentin Tarantino tells an interesting fairy tale here with Once Upon A Time In...H-Wood. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are incredible in this, Brad Pitt puts out one of his best performances in a long time in this. Margot Robbie is great but shes kinda just, in the background as Sharon Tate and not really as important to the story as you would think. The film can kinda feel like it can drag a bit as it's heavy on Tarantino's quibby dialogue but the second half is extremely well done. With the ending, obviously Tarantino has twisted history in the past films like Inglorious Bastards and Hitler being assassinated in a movie theater. So Tarantino's adaption of the Manson murders, I feel gives Tate almost an ending she deserved instead of the tragically horrifying one she got. Expand

And Quentin Tarantino sure knows how to send a love letter properly to the golden age of Hollywood that blends humor and mystery in an all-in-one starstudded package. Most people won't buy it, but there is something truly spectacular about it in terms of art and history behind this film. And yes, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt were a fantastic acting duo in this QT directed flick and so are the main and supporting A2B-listers. I recommend seeing this twice or in 35mm/70mm at your local Alamo Drafthouse Cinema if you're lucky enough. Ain't gonna lie, but this is one of those movies that will get you talking for a while. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Once upon in Hollywood may have tied The Hateful Eight as my favorite Tarantino film. It was different from standard Tarantino films as in it wasn't very violent, apart from the ending. However, I feel that Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton are my favorite duo in any film I've ever seen. The Hateful Eight, I preferred in terms of story and plot. This movie was oddly touching; a unique spin on an American tragedy. I was on the edge of my seat at the end, fearing that our beloved anti-heroes would perish, as well. But, for once in a Tarantino film, this had a clear cut happy ending for all parties... Well, all likeable parties, involved. I hope this won't be Tarantino's last film (though I expect it is with him starting a family). However, if it is, it was a phenomenal film to go out on. Expand

It’s both aimless and yet meaningful with the commentary on the new era in Hollywood. The movie pays tribute to old Hollywood, film making, Sharon Tate, stunt work, and actors. This is perhaps Tarantino’s most personal and mature movie his made, until the last 10 minutes (which I love) goes complete ape sh*t.

I can’t think of any other director where the passion and love for movies is so transparent through Tarantino's craft. He’s such an old school film maker that he and Martin Scorsese are the last golden age directors, as every new release feels like an event. In this movie, Quentin presents 69’ Hollywood at its peak, as he remembers it from his childhood. He manages to rebuild classy LA thanks to the crew and creative team.

There’s a couple of scenes where Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), drives around LA and there are long shots that shows off the environment and it’s amazing the amount of detail and effort went into the setting - with Robert Richardson brilliant Cinematography bringing it all alive.

Leonardo DiCaprio was absolutely excellent as the fading Western star, Rick F**king Dalton. Dalton, a self-centered, yet vulnerable actor that you both laugh and pity. I will often forget about DiCaprio comedic chops, something similar to Ryan Gosling. I also like the subtle stutter that’s sprinkled through out, which is sad when given some thought that it’s something he’s got to deal with. There’s a heartfelt scene where Dalton tells his young co-star about a book his reading and mid way through explaining the story he realises it mirrors his life, and breaks down in tears with me crying with him. Yep, I teared up in a Tarantino movie. Leo was the pulse of the movie.

Brad Pitt was amazing as the deadpan and cool Cliff Booth. This is probably my favorite performance from him. Cliff’s main character trait is his strength and he demonstrates it multiple times, but leaves the scene before anything can escalate. The chemistry between Leo and Brad was electric. Pitt was the meat of the movie.

Margot Robbie was an absolute delight portraying the late Sharon Tate. Despite her slim screen time, but whenever she has screen time, I couldn’t help but smile. I instantly fell in love with her and it’s painfully to think something so sweet and pure could be taken away from us by brainwashed zombies who don’t deserve a life, just a jail cell. I thought her portrayal in the movie was a beautiful tribute and how they handle her gives new life into her legacy.

There’s a great scene where Sharon Tate watches a movie in cinemas that’s she’s in, but instead of Margot Robbie re-creating those scenes, they just show the real Sharon Tate in the movie. Now people were left a bit confused over this decision, although it’s clear to me that erasing the real Tate out of the movie would be more disrespectful to her memory, so leaving her in is a touching tribute to her career and her work. Robbie was the heart of the movie.

The other supporting cast all did terrific with the little screen time most of them had. Kurt Russell makes a welcoming return as a character that I assume is Stuntman Mike from 'Death Proof' - either way still a welcoming presence. He’s also the narrator and I find it hilarious whenever he tries to pronounce Italian movie titles. Al Pacino was a blast to watch as the tight and yet colorful producer. Mike Moh portrayal of Bruce Lee may have sparked some controversy recently, but I thought he was entertaining regardless and I don’t really think it mocks his legacy at all. I mean, this is the same director who made a four hour movie honoring the legend. Margaret Qualley was crazy good as the hippie girl who’s brain washed into a cult family. It’s crazy to know that Damon Herriman has played Charles Manson twice in the same year and month for this movie and the TV show ‘Mindhunter’, which you should totally check out by the way.

After letting the film sit for awhile, there’s so many memorable lines that I would often catch myself recreating just from memory after seeing it twice. There’s so many great moments as well. The lights of LA coming to life at the dust of dawn, or the suspenseful scenes that actually got me feeling tense watching it. Without spoiling anything, but the Spahn Ranch scene where the Manson family stares down a defenseless Cliff Booth as he tries to speak to an old friend was terrifying - reminds me of the opening scene of ‘Inglorious Bastards’, in terms of building up tension that you wait in anticipation to explode.

And of course with it being a Tarantino movie, the music is lost treasure revived for a modern generation. Always fantastic and incredibly catchy. I can’t think of anything better than Cliff driving around LA with the song ‘Bring a Little Lovin’ playing in the background.

Tal vez si o tal vez no.

As not one of the biggest fan of Tarantino, this movie actually surprised me on the positive side. It's so well made in every aspect. Your transported back into 60s Hollywood. The only takeaway is the looseness tone of the movie which is intended to, and Taratino's trademark. And sure you can get a little annoyed with the extra components Tarantino puts in his movies that lead to nowhere and doesn't actually fit but it's just one of his movies charms. Putting Brad Pitt next to Leonardo DiCaprio it's the same as a race between a fiat and a ferrari, they'll both reach the end-line but one is clearly superior. Enjoy and good movie.

Ps: We need more screen-time of Al Pacino, that guy is awesome.

A Quentin Tarantino flick centeredIf I was your regular twice a month movie-goer who cared more about entertainment and less about quality control, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” the way I do right now. A Quentin Tarantino flick centered around New Hollywood with a Martin Scorsese biopic style setup doesn’t feel like much at first but underneath the surface, it follows an unbelievably riveting personal rise and fall story coupled with moments that matter, characters that were memorable, visions that were exploited thanks to stellar cinematography and editing, easter eggs and subtleties that helped expand this world of a glorious past we may or may not have experienced and a script with such magnetic, gripping, well crafted thought and weight to its originality and class that this alternate fairytale evolves itself into the closest thing to Grand Theft Auto meets Inherent Vice that we could get. It really was that majestic to me. Just like Mike Moh’s Bruce Lee, the film felt impeccable.

Now I understand why he calls this film his most personal one yet as well as his love letter to L.A: This was the era of Hollywood that helped define him, that helped turn him into one of the most unconventional yet successfully name’s in the industry but even he knows time is against him. The film is deeply personal about the topic of friendship and the hierarchy centered around scratching and clawing to stay alive in a constantly evolving industry that subverts innocence in exchange for status. How, in order to attain it, we gotta go to a dark place. True innocence against human nature at its worst.....once again. If I were to nitpick and dissect a flaw, it’d have to be that over-extensive runtime. But then again, no film is perfect. So aside from that, Tarantino.....if this is your last film, then what a legacy you’ve left behind, good sir.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OUATIH isn't like any of Tarantino's other films at all. For one, the movie is more focused on setting than plot. However, OUATIH proves that a movie doesn't necessarily need to focus on plot in order to be good. It paints a vivid picture into life in Hollywood at the end of its Golden Age. Tarantino does well to capture the feel and atmosphere of the era, as well as to incorporate the various historical references into the movie.

OUATIH isn't completely devoid of a storyline, though. At the center of the movie is the career of actor Rick Dalton, who's in the midst of a fight to remain relevant. Leonardo DiCaprio shines as Dalton, as does Brad Pitt as Dalton's friend and stunt double Cliff Booth.

The best part of OUATIH is its ending, which contains the thrilling violence which Tarantino's films are known for. It also rewrites history (similar to Inglorious Bastards) in order to create a happier ending for some of the film's characters (though you'll need to be familiar with the Tate murders to understand the significance of the ending). While it isn't Tarantino's best movie, OUATIH is a compelling film and surely a must-watch.

Rick Dalton (Leonardo Dicaprio) is a famous yet struggling Hollywood actor and his stunt man Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) unintentionally gets involved with the Manson family. The movie has a lot of great humour, acting, and characters all around. It also does an exceptional job depicting the Manson story as well as what living in Hollywood was like in the late 60s. Its easy to get invested in the characters and the setting, especially if you have an appreciation for filmmaking. If you don't know much about Charles Manson already, I'd recommend researching the basics of his story first as some of the movie will come off as confusing. Otherwise I'd recommend the movie to everyone, especially if you are a fan of Tarantino and/or filmmaking in general. Expand

Every movie is so entirely different in plot, sets, and time periods yet so entirely the same at the DNA (talkies with some hyper violence). That’s QT style. He builds historically detailed intricate worlds that top flight actors flock too to give performances of their careers. If you are the kind of person who only cares about story, "Once upon a time" might not be for you. QT likes to take a movie and mash it up with another genre. Take for instance Magnificent Eight is a western who-dun-it Canterbury tale. Inglorious Basturds is about WWII and the love of cinema. lol. "Once upon a time" is a fairy tale of living in 1960s california and the 1960s movie making business. It just so happens to also be about the Manson murders. Pitt and DiCaprio were amazing. I'm a fan of Margot Robbies performance -- its all visual. This movie felt like 1969! You can tell the actors loved being in this movie. Tarantino's humour is dramatically challenged and emotions mocked with silliness, there lies his film in between.

Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood

Tarantino's bluff is so smart that the entire film feels stupid. A joke. So now, the question it raises is, Is it funny? Not particularly. It is not a funny joke. It is a joke that you'd wish you had told. It is a joke that filters its audience out and then welcomes you to an open discussion that could last for hours. Good. Productive hours. For the writer-director, Quentin Tarantino is grabbing all the sensitive glasses in one tray and is serving us with an upbeating groovy music and a cautionary manual of "how to" deal with the film. Or more accurately, the final showdown. The entire film is just consuming energy for those last moments. That he exonerates in a big smile.. and not a laugh. This is smart filmmaking.

Up till now, I have been in awe of his writing in all the films. But after this film, I am leaning towards his maturity and confidence as a director. And as an evidence there is a scenario placed in the middle of the film where Cliff Booth played by Brad Pitt enters a red zone. Not only does the cinematography and background score glorifies Tarantino's legacy in that very antic, but as a part of narrative he whispers the secret of the film with utmost honesty and whisk of his signature absurdity.

Bonkers! is your reaction as you leave the screen and to protect that feeling is his bulletproof script that stands tall with him. Tarantino, as a writer has been lately considering himself to be drawn towards the literary art form, subjugates his and his project's place in his creative form just as Shakespeare used to do in his days. Often pitching himself on screen as a metaphor or the state or stage he has been through in his life, Tarantino's penultimate project- swooping in every last drop- sums up his work like a final chapter of a novel.

Ergo, by the time credits starts rolling everything and everyone has left the room, letting the dust settle and satisfaction flood in. Leonardo DiCaprio embodying a persona as Rick Dalton ought to be up for the game giddily considering how bottomless the pit is when it comes to the emotions of his characters. It is a role that anyone would love to have and yet not taking it for granted, DiCaprio's finest moments can be seen on set fumbling and riffing with his co-stars.

But I have been in love with underrated character since the very beginning. And ergo Pitt's Cliff resonates more strongly to me than anyone. Primarily, because it had very less chances to work on screen. Often audience reacts to empathy in a character and for a character that never sees a fall in the film, Pitt has a daunting task to make those half-grins charismatic and also earned. And on that note, Pitt steals the show with a Hawaiian shirt, c***y know-it-all attitude, a loyal dog and pretty standard one-liners; which I think doesn't just signifies the Once Upon A Time In... Hollywood part but the whole lifespan of it.

I think not, but does it capture everything Tarantino was going for , Yes it does, I really liked this film, i think it's very similar to Tarantino's Jackie Brown in nature and structure. it's a movie about friendship and it's very funny i didn't expect that from this movie but it worked pretty well and thats also because of how Leo and Pitt nailed their roles, you can see DiCaprio's emotional breakdown and feel it, and he was great and really owned this character, as for Brad Pitt i can say it's my favorite character from this film , he pretty much has the best lines and the best scenes, Margot Robbie as Sharon tate, even if she was not given the biggest part in this movie, but she did good the movie is filled with long scenes that gave an advantage to the actors to really shine, the production design is Phenomenal, you can feel the 60's vibes, the sets and the Hollwood Boulevard are beautifull, the movie it's not about one think, its feels like a collection of moments beautifully directed and very well written and thats exactly what i think of this movie and thats what i liked about it, things i had an issue with is the second act, sometimes a scene could've been shorten but they took a little bit long and sometimes the narrative loses itself but it fixes itself the next scene,i really loved the first and third act, they are GREAT, my major problems is within the second Act that lacks a bit of tension, if you like Tarantino's style of directing and cinematic movie that relies on characters and the performances you're gonna probably enjoy this film. So to fully grasp the intentions of the piece, one must consider that it was made by an iconic filmmaker as interested in looking back as he is in focusing on the future.

The central story focuses on Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), a fading leading man now reduced to being the “heavy” in the prominent TV shows of the day, meaning that he’ll always be killed off at the end of the episode. Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is his stunt double and best friend, helping to smooth Rick’s gradual descent. Along the way, a variety of characters are introduced: Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Roman Polanski, Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis), George Spahn (Bruce Dern) who rented his ranch to the movie industry to shoot westerns (it was the location for the TV show “Bonanza” for 14 years), even relatively unknown producer Marvin Schwarz (Al Pacino) who gives Dalton some well-intended career advice. The list of credits and uncredited roles in this film is nearly endless. Tarantino takes full advantage of this embarrassment of riches.

In many ways, “Once Upon a Time…” is Tarantino’s homage to the Hollywood of 1969. Significantly, it’s a Hollywood created primarily from his imagination (Tarantino was 6 years old at the time.) To accomplish this retrospective, Tarantino takes on some of the key events of ’69 - portraying some quite literally, while radically reinterpreting others. From my perspective, Tarantino is suggesting not only the power of movies, but also its subversive possibilities. Particularly with his interpretation of the final scene of the film, Tarantino appears to be suggesting that movies have the ability to rewrite history. He may even be suggesting that when there is a discrepancy between “facts” and Hollywood’s version of events, it’s the film version that the public will remember.

Sometimes, this theme is developed with gentle kindness. There is a touching scene where Sharon Tate attends an afternoon matinee of “The Wrecking Crew,” a film in which she co-starred. Unrecognized by other members of the audience, Tate glories in seeing herself on the screen, her face reflecting unalloyed joy when others in the audience laugh and respond favorably to her on-screen character.

Rest assured, or be forewarned, Tarantino’s tendency toward hyper-violence has not waned. In fact, the carnage toward the end of the film is even more shocking because of the relatively tame preceding events.

With a running time of 2 hours 45 minutes, Tarantino clearly has a lot to say. But this is a storyteller at the top of his game. For this moviegoer, it was an investment of time that paid rich dividends.

We are treated to a delicious timepiece so rich in details and excitement, the story goes back to the golden days of Hollywood when actors were idols in every sense of the word, the story itself goes down different paths that all link up at the end in a spectacular manner worthy of the Tarantino's violent ways, and boy was it fun to watch. The two leads, Decaprio and Pitt bring unparalleled charisma to the table, I'll tell you this, it is almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen when they're on, they just possess enough to grip you throughout the film, they capture the true old Hollywood charm so perfectly.

In all honesty, I truly believe that this film wasn't meant to be explained but rather enjoyed and I did just that, Tarantino with a twist but I like it.

All of the staples of his filmmaking appear, but in a much more restrained fashion. The vast majority of the film lacks the grandiose swagger of his more recent films, but it successfully draws you into the atmosphere all the same. What some may view as bloated actually plays an essential role. Without letting the audience simmer in the magic of Tinseltown, Tarantino's signature explosive finale would lose its thematic punch. You may not get as much out of repeat viewings of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood compared to the rest of Tarantino's filmography, but the first time is exceptional enough. Expand

The best thing is that what happens usually comes out of the blue. This is my first time rating movies. Going to the movies anymore requires some monetary investment. I like to rate them either:
1. You won’t waste your money

This movie is a well thought out love letter to the 60s in Hollywood. Although the film follows no clear plot it ends up adding to the charm of the movie because the story Tarantino is trying to tell really requires no structure. It's also worth noting this movie is hilarious. It is still that signature Tarantino humor that leaves you feeling guilty for thinking such dark scenes are funny. Although this isn't Tarantino's best work it's still a standout project that is worth a watch Expand

It’s his least story-driven film, which is a refreshing departure. I feel like he was trying to capture this really specific time and place for the film industry and I loved just being able to live in that for awhile with these awesome characters. There’s a reason why so much of the film is spent just hanging out with these people as they drive around L.A. or watch television together. The 1969 style and tone remain consistently hazy and aimless in the best possible way. That being said, it probably ranks 7th for me, out of his 9 amazing films. Expand

I happened into seeing it when I heard a local theater was doing 35mm showings and decided to grab a drink swing over and watch it. I hadn't originally planned to see it since the trailer looked middling, but I'm glad I did.

The movie is a slow burn that culminates in a dramatic high point of an ending.
It kind of surprised me that even with all the hints I really didn't get that this was a historical fiction until after the movie ended. An excellent addition to QT's works.

But in my opinion, it is an excellent movie. The story of friendship is touching, but how it addresses the duality of man is by far the most interesting part of the movie. In life, don't we want to have the success and acclaim of Leo the actor? However, don't we also want to be as cool as Pitt the stuntman? We want a combination of acclaim and charisma, but we don't want to be told what to do like an actor, and we don't want to get no credit like the stuntman. Overall, great movie. Maybe it's recency bias, but I think it is Tarantino's third best film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" imbues an inchoate aura, it does - however - succeed in its depiction of the antiquated beauty of cinema during the 1960's. It's redolent presentation of this era also contains outstanding cinematography, with DiCaprio's visage and bravura of "Rick Dalton", who is meticulous in his representation of the character's impediment. As for Pitt's "Cliff", the character offers an insight into the adroit of a stuntman - whilst also elucidating Cliff's ingrained intonation, which ultimately coalesces Rick Dalton's act. Forbye, DiCaprio and Pitt out-perform one another, whilst Margot Robbie further augments this idyllic image of retro Hollywood; irrefutably, this picture is the superior of Tarantino's 9 films, which merely adumbrates his intentions of the 10th and final film he shall direct - will it be his best?

Initial Rating - 8.9/10
