Bold and bang to tears!! Quentin Tarantino insanely creafted his nostalgically great love letter to the golden age of silverscreen.

However, there isn't much in the movie that I found interesting. Dalton's character was more of a pouty baby than someone who goes through a genuine evolution that would've felt more rewarding in the end. But there isn't denying the style, ganache and exuberance Tarantino gives this world and time. The movie ends poetically, but a lot of times expects its greatness instead of earning it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this movie at least 3 times because it's just plain good. The story, the acting, the atmosphere, the narration, everything is just right here! Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and the sadly recently deceased Luke Perry deliver a top performance here. I have to congratulate Quentin Tarantino, that was another real goal! Those who know the true sad and gruesome backstory of Sharon Tate will be surprised at the twist at the end of the film. This is real popcorn cinema, awesome! Thank you Mr Tarantino! Brilliant! Expand

I will write a more comprehensive review later. It would be a cinematic crime if this film were not a top Oscar contender. It deserves nominations across the board. Leo's angsty but darkly comedic depiction of Rick Dalton is probably going to rank among his best performances. The entire ensemble is amazing but Pitt's effortless & cool portrayal of Cliff Booth is a stand out along with his dog Brandy. This film has everything I want in a film about Hollywood's golden age. It takes a deep journey into the lives of two men looking for their place of fame in Hollywood; all masterfully complimented with outstanding filming, talented acting, and a mind-blowing production set that deserves in full the awards it has received due to its time period accuracy. Being set in the late 1960s, there is no 21st century vibe throughout the whole film which fully impresses me. A lot goes on during the film and requires full attention and concentration. Multiple viewings is also advised. Quentin Tarantino applies a genius twist to a true story, thus resulting in this thrilling masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a film about the Hollywood of the the late 1960s, centering on actors, teenage girls/fans, nostalgia of wild west/cowboy films of that time.

The first hour was a little bland but it improves after that. I liked the scenes with Cliff Booth at the old ranch film set, where numerous young girls keep an eye on the new comer from a distance. I thought Cliff seemed generally more 'cool' (more of a star) than Rick Dalton did - what you can read into that is up to you.

I wouldn't say its greatly funny most of the time but it is amusing at times, in a darkly comic way (so typical Tarantino fare). Also it's an understated film for the most part, I'd say. There's some witty dialogue and the cinematography is decent enough. I liked the music played too. There's a fairly strong emphasis/focus on bright colours, in the bright lights of cinemas (including listings advertised), hotels, restaurants etc. - the famous 'bright lights of Hollywood'. Its stylish but maybe not as frantic as you may expect. There is, of course, some quite bloody violence, as is expected for a Tarantino film but there's not as much as you may assume - all in the 2nd half, quite close to the end of the film.

Yes I'd recommend this film but primarily for fans of Tarantino's work. If your expecting a constant action type film then this may well seem too long winded and not offer all your expecting but if your intrigued by the plot and you like the cast, then yes, I'd say it's worth seeing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great film I slept on for far too long. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is a brilliant window into the dying days of Hollywood's golden age, pontificated by a washed up actor desperately chasing his fading glory, his stunt double, excommunicated by scandal over his involvement in his wife's death.

The film feels at times like it could be real, based on a real story and real people, before taking turns towards the absurd, the fairy tale suggested in the films title. It's central narrative is less a concrete story and more a struggle. Dalton's feeble struggle to remain a star. His inane hope that he might just happen to cross his neighbour, Roman Polanski, his insistence on remaining in Hollywood, in a house he can only just afford because it means he remains in Hollywood just a little longer.

The films portrayals of real individuals has been criticised, but one thing to remember is the nature of the film. It's an exaggeration. Purely embracing the absurdity of Hollywood. Bruce Lee, the Manson family, they're all taken to a point of absurdity here in keeping with the nature of the film.

The film ends with the foiling of the Tate murder, in very a Tarantino-esque fairy tale ending. With this, Dalton's career, which had been on the cusp of ending, seems to be saved when he is invited by Tate to join them at Polanski's house for a drink, achieving the goal he had sought throughout the film, leaving the film to close with a spark for Dalton's dying career. And that's that, a Hollywood fairy tale, with all the drama, dilemma, drug use, inflated egos, and action you'd expect. It's not Tarantino's greatest film, but it is a great, character driven journey into a fading era of Hollywood's past.

This wonderfully acted and beautifully shot movie contains all the hallmarks of what makes Tarantino's films so great. But it also stands out as being the least substantial out of all of his work.

The already simple plot gets lost among so many meandering scenes that seem to be there just to look pretty. They do look pretty, they look amazing, actually, but they do give out a sense of self indulgense on the part of the director. Most storylines in the movie go nowhere, and the weird tonal shift in the end reminded me of Unglorious Bastards, another weak link in Tarantino's filmography.

But even Tarantino's trashiest and dumbest movie still somehow stands heads and shoulders above anything else Hollywood has to offer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OUATIH isn't like any of Tarantino's other films at all. For one, the movie is more focused on setting than plot. However, OUATIH proves that a movie doesn't necessarily need to focus on plot in order to be good. It paints a vivid picture into life in Hollywood at the end of its Golden Age. Tarantino does well to capture the feel and atmosphere of the era, as well as to incorporate the various historical references into the movie.

OUATIH isn't completely devoid of a storyline, though. At the center of the movie is the career of actor Rick Dalton, who's in the midst of a fight to remain relevant. Leonardo DiCaprio shines as Dalton, as does Brad Pitt as Dalton's friend and stunt double Cliff Booth.

The best part of OUATIH is its ending, which contains the thrilling violence which Tarantino's films are known for. It also rewrites history (similar to Inglorious Bastards) in order to create a happier ending for some of the film's characters (though you'll need to be familiar with the Tate murders to understand the significance of the ending). While it isn't Tarantino's best movie, OUATIH is a compelling film and surely a must-watch.

In my point of view, this movie needs to be watched at least because it mirrors the particular period of American history. It guides the audiences through the atmosphere of 1969. This movie raises acute questions that worry and cause a stir the minds of people nowadays too. Great acting and wonderful script unconditionally attract attention to this picture.

'Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood' is a kind of a fairy tale about Sharon Tate's life, which have never come true in reality.

Real Ratings: 77.5/100
Critics love Tarantino because he loves cinema and they can associate with that, and they get all of his references, which can be lost on your average viewer. It is the same reason movies set in LA often get a few noms or wins during Oscar season that many would call questionable. This is not to detract from Tarantino's talent. The man is a great writer, though as of late he has become a blowhard. Scripts are long and drawn out, and then they all crash into an ending that seems tacked on rather than built to which begs the question does he even know where he is going with his films anymore. It is not visionary, it is repetitive and showing very little sign of growth. He is a craftsman who carves an excellent movie each time, but they are more or less the same.

DE: Tarantino runs a decent ship, and Hollywood is no different. Everything seems to be on point. Every department is hitting its marks, and we are building a tale in his distinct (if that is the right word) style. In terms of editing, the loss of Sally Menke can be felt in every one of his films since she passed. She somehow was able to contain him and give a better structure. Though from seeing her works outside of the Tarantino verse, you can see he had an equal part in elevating her. Together they were able to take his longwinded approach and make it come off with a steady pace and allow decent investment from the audience, but now however that is slipping away at a fast pace with each subsequent film.

W: Tarantino is one of the great writers, he is not on Miyazaki's or Anderson's level, but he is undoubtedly on the same level as the Coen brothers or Bong Joon-ho. Which is not a level to sniff at, but the problem with Tarantino's writing is that he may have switched genres, but he has not adapted to it. More that he has made another Tarantino movie with a new shell on it. Which is great, but if I wanted to see the same thing as before I might as well watch the classics. It is sort of like a band doing a new tour 20 years later trying to flog the new stuff that sounds far too similar to the old stuff, and the fans would much rather prefer to hear the hits.

C: Have you seen a Tarantino, Scorsese or Oliver Stone movie? Then guess what you have seen Robert Richardson's work and along with it some iconic shots that have littered avatars and uni students bedrooms for decades. His outing this time is impressive, though it might not match a level that he created. That said the lens seems to tell more of a story here than Tarantino's writing, which tells you everything you need to know.

A: Acting is stereotypically cartoonish, but that has become a standard for Tarantino. Though Pitt's depiction of the more sane character throughout this 2D world of actors stands out. Sadly given the cast, we are working with, and the sheer level of talent coupled with the extent in which we examine these characters lives it feels underwhelming, and each one is more an allegory than a persona in their own right.

S: As strange as it seems the sound department is usually one of the reasons I watch a Tarantino film. Since Inglourious Basterds someone in the sound department is getting an Oscar nom, whether it is music, mixing or editing. Without fail Hollywood continues this trend. Just excellent.

PD: This film is not pretending to be the 1960s, it is the 1960s. I know you have seen many a period piece, and they all do a decent job, but it is the subtle nuances and the dirt that make the difference. This is not a glossy veneer trying to rewrite a section of history, this is just trying to capture an era for better or worse. This may be down to the fact that Tarantino is obsessed with the period and only a slight glance at his oeuvre would back this notion up.

BA: The costume design, while simple is also great, it catches the style of the era without feeling like it is overexaggerating the form or the zeitgeist of the time. The visual effects in the latter portion of the film while jarring are quite well done and stand out.

EVO: It is not one of Tarantino's "funner" films, which is odd given that it is a bright nostalgia backed film told from the perspective of mostly positive souls. If you are a Tarantino completest, you are going to want to see it, but for many, the question of why did I sit through that for 3 hours will ring true on the lips, and while the film is crafted brilliantly I cannot help but finding myself siding with them.

It's the usual Tarantino flick: nostalgia, weird people doing weird stuff and a senseless massacre. But (some of) the cast is great and it's the best reenactment of the late 60s, early 70s that I ever saw, it really was like being there.

The most personal and stonishing movie Tarantino has ever made is not just a movie, but an amazing piece of art, brought together by the director's memories of Hollywood during the late 60s.

The movie is a great example of good acting and directing, and every single moment and scene of it is put together perfectly to bring us towards this unexpected, violent and funny end where Tarantino makes his job and finishes the film in the best way I could ever imagine.

"Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood" is definitely one of the best movies of the year, and his 160 min of pure good cinema are worth it.

I always heard that he liked to use violence a lot in his films. When I knew the time when the film was going to happen and the historical context that would revolve around the film, I was very curious on how he would approach such a case. To be honest, the film is quite slow and I was not able to get so attached to the characters -- Except the dog Brandy. What interested me most was the end of the film. He surprised me positively for knowing how to use violence in a very intelligent way that made me vibrate and feel pleasant at the same time. It is strange for an extremely violent scene to make the viewer feel so good about it. Who doesn't know actress Sharon Tate and her story, do some research before seeing the movie. It will help a little to understand the ending and the homage behind some scenes. Expand

Here he brings a very interesting hollywood setting in the late 60's. Right at the beginning of the film you can already imagine what the story will be, as it portrays the murder of Sharon Tate, which shook everyone at the time. Quentin Tarantino's direction and script remain brilliant and extremely authoritative. We can not fail to mention the high point of this work, the performances, Leonardo DiCaprio is impeccable, Margot Robbie is fantastic, but who manages to surprise more is Brad Pitt, who probably did the best job of his career, I believe that Brad's only performance who can go head to head with this is his role in Inglorious Basterds. We also have a brief appearance by Al Pacino, which is a pleasant surprise. The soundtrack is very well done and one of the best of the year. To conclude, I believe that this is not the best film of Tarantino's career, films like Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs present more complete elements, but Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is an excellent work of direction, script, acting and soundtrack sonorous. I worried about the ending possibly being a re-enactment of the Charles Manson murders but it was NOT. In fact, although it was a bit gruesome, it was a twist everyone should appreciate. I actually laughed uproariously during this scene. Just deserves for Charlie Manson’s gang. Sharon Tate was unharmed at the end as it should have been with a fairy tale Hollywood ending. A love letter to Sharron Tate. Tarantino’s skills as a director are now complete. Expand

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: 9th time a charm?

S2S: This weekbefore you Trip Fontaine was able to review the summer blockbuster, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie by director Quentin Tarantino. So let’s see what Trip has to say.

Trip Fontaine: Most fairy tales begin with those famous four word: once upon a time. Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film as writer and director, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, alludes to the promise and magical romanticism of those children’s stories. While not necessarily a fairy tale, this film leans into the romanticism of Hollywood and the despair of when the realization of the Hollywood dream begins to slip or is otherwise threatened.

Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is an aging television and movie actor in the 1950’s and 60’s, whose career is on a downturn. His confidante, assistant and longtime stunt double is Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. The main plot of Dalton and Booth is a little bit character study of two actors, who must come to terms with the impending end of an era, and a little bit of a buddy dramedy in which each willfully supports the other. The subplot involves a rising starlet, Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie. Tarantino firmly sets the main action of the film in 1969, a turning point in American counterculture, which is particularly resonant considering the other characters that are encountered throughout.

For the uninitiated, it may be a good idea to do a quick Google search: Who is Sharon Tate? If you don’t already know a little bit about the actress, it may be helpful in orienting yourself on the time and significance of both Tate and the mysterious hippies Cliff meets. While not strictly necessary for enjoyment of the film, it does add some rich texture to where Tarantino is taking us. There’s some joy, but also impending doom.

At 2 hours and roughly 40 minutes runtime, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood tells its story with a deliberate pace. This runtime is pretty standard for a Tarantino film. It doesn’t feel like there is a wasted moment. The core contrast between Dalton’s downward career trajectory and Tate’s promise of future stardom is enhanced by DiCaprio’s almost manic desperation as Dalton tries to save the parts he is getting and Robbie’s luminous sequence reveling in watching Tate on the big screen. Pitt has never been his Pitt-est than as Cliff – he’s confidant and brash, no nonsense with a sense of humor. There is a hilarious scene between Pitt and Mike Moh, as Bruce Lee, that will be one of the most talked about. It all comes together, so surprisingly, in the last 20 or so minutes that you walk out a bit dazed and giddy. And, if you know the history, it is satisfyingly bittersweet as well.

For Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a must see in the movie theaters. Get your tub of popcorn (and other snacks) and settle in for movie stars being movie stars and a film-loving director directing a film about loving films. For the rest, I still suggest seeing this movie in the theaters. Tarantino films are meant to be seen on the big screen.

Thanks Trip for your review, I agree with you completely. The acting are Leo and Brad at their typical best and thus Tarantino also rebounding to his best after the Hateful Eight. There are two points I want to drive home for general moviegoers, aka the non-Tarantino fans or non-Cinephiles. First, general moviegoers, this is honestly a borderline matinee film for you based on the length of the film and because of point number two. Point two is that you if you don’t know who Sharon Tate is, you will be lost in the theater and will overlook the brilliance of the story being told to you to make this a definite big box film. I almost want to say don’t look up who she is until after the film because that just might enhance you intrigue in the movie and make you want to see it again for certain easter eggs.

Long story short, for general moviegoers catch the matinee if anything, but if you know the story of Sharon Tate, then this will be a great film to see in theaters.

The Stream: 2 hours and 40 minutes can be a long time to sit in a theater.

The Big Screen: Tarantino, Leo and Brad are at their best while providing a suspense filled movie with comedic gold.

The Final Bill: Tarantino fans and true Cinephiles, this is a must see in the movie theaters for the great acting and storytelling.

For one, it's one of only two QT films (the other being Jackie Brown) that put an emphasis on compassion. As a whole, and within the relationships of characters. Especially that of the relationship between Leo and Brad. Pitt finding probably the most hand-in-glove character since Se7en. Great homage to QTs truest love, which is Hollywood, set against the backdrop of Cielo Drive circa 69. - We know how much Tarantino loves to break rules in the best way possible, and he does not fail again on this one. A great sub-tribute to Sharon Tate as well. And why does it seem that these Tarantino films are the only things that really work for Kurt Russell anymore. Either way, great ensemble cast, including Russell, great likenesses to all the old stars. This film is really one of a kind and atypical of Tarantino in the most heartwarming and memorable ways. If you're looking for Kill Bill Vol 1 or Deathproof, you may be knocking on the wrong door. This film has a big heart, even with the usual hyper-violent tendencies. With that said, ONE OF THE BEST OF THE YEAR, and possibly Tarantino's best. An magnum-opus, a love letter, a historical document. It serves so many things. Way to go QT! Expand

3. The music. Make no mistake, the music used for this movie could not be any better. 60's vibes all the way.
4. The writing. Especially the script. The story was a bit dragging, but the script adds color to every scene, no matter who's dialogue it is.

Negatives:
1. Length. The movie is quite long and it could be dragging sometimes, especially in some scenes. Not all, but some. Some scenes are quite unnecessary, and only adds to the length, not the story. 2. Brad Pitt was not well-utilized for my liking. Sure, he had his moments in this film, particularly during the climax part, but not enough.

Hung on every second till the end and especially enjoyed all the tangents and sidetracks which made this a rich and magical trip to my childhood. Outstanding and exemplary. Great acting throughout. Wonderful cameos. Brilliant, extreme but very watchable and humorous violence which capped it all off. Wow !!! Expand

We are treated to a delicious timepiece so rich in details and excitement, the story goes back to the golden days of Hollywood when actors were idols in every sense of the word, the story itself goes down different paths that all link up at the end in a spectacular manner worthy of the Tarantino's violent ways, and boy was it fun to watch. The two leads, Decaprio and Pitt bring unparalleled charisma to the table, I'll tell you this, it is almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen when they're on, they just possess enough to grip you throughout the film, they capture the true old Hollywood charm so perfectly.

In all honesty, I truly believe that this film wasn't meant to be explained but rather enjoyed and I did just that, Tarantino with a twist but I like it.
