The action scenes were fantastic, and you'll leave the theater thinking of how fantastic they were. But don't expect the movie to make any lasting marks. The film felt cliche' from start to finish, topped off with an eye rolling ending. The protagonist (need I say who) was extremely static and monotone throughout the whole film, along with every other oblivious character. Beyond these problems, Man of Steel is a decent film that nails a plethora of things like costume design, music, and special effects. I believe Super Man fans should feel lucky this came out at as good as it did. Expand

than establishing his characters to intimate levels. If people are to
see the disintegration of skyscrapers and such, they can always have
Michael Bay at their disposal. But why Superman This could have been
a much better movie with little expansion of Clark's Kansas story and
limiting the explosions for a few occasions. I tried to see through if
there's anything more than just detonations but I couldn't possibly do.

There is some serious lack of charm in Cavill's Kal-El and so does in
Amy Adams' Lois Lane. In occupying the screen presence, only Costner
seems to pull it off and Crowe in parts here and there. And there's
this non-linear telling, which should have accounted for some
fascination, actually back fires. Had the script been filled with some
take-the-cake cliff-hanger moments, it could have worked. I am a fan of
superman myself but, in all conscience, I cannot imagine me liking the
movie despite its flaws, thanks to all the deafening things happening
in the last hour.

Not entirely soulless though. At least not until when Zimmer is around.
The living legend with all his might gives this undirected thing a
background score to rejoice. I cannot believe Nolan is a part of story
credit. Rest in peace, Superman. and if you are to resurrect, I wish to
god, let there be some less noise.

This really is superman redesigned, if your a fan of the old superman and come here expecting the old superman, then your probably going to leave the cinema feeling disappointed. On the other hand, look at it in a brand spanking new superman and the effect is quite different. The story was basic but well delivered, but the narration could have used abit of work. Some characters didn't feel at all fleshed out and kind of bland at times, even superman himself at times. The biggest and liveliest character of the film was supermans enemy, Zod. Simply put, one of the best villains in a hero movie ever. Infact saying he was a villain would be almost unfair, if you actually get inside Zod's mind, you see that he isn't doing the things out of pure evil nature but for the good of his race and that is what he has been born for. I give this film a very strong 7 or a 7.5 if the rating system had it. Expand

Roughly 30 minutes is spent on exhaustive (if superbly rendered) fight scenes, all of which could be described as totally unnecessary given that the films ending is so obvious: good over evil, difficult moral choice, bright future et al. The Christopher Nolan touch is apparent in the quality of the film's production, but not in it's plot. Furthermore, at times the dialogue descends into superhero movie cliché, none of which is as rewarding as it is in say, the Tobey Maguire Spiderman series. Aside from this, the film makes for an enjoyable watch, with some genuinely moving, epic and humourous moments, and it provides an excellent platform for what could be a fitting followup series to the Dark Knight trilogy in the DC Universe. And those were just like this. It put me on the edge of my seat more than I can enjoy. I think they were trying to be to original. Their also wasn't enough interaction between lois and clark. One second he is saving her and the next they are kissing. It was to rushed. I wasnt to big of a fan of the shaky camera thing that he did. All in all. Casting for everyone was perfect. Story was great. I just really wish that Zack Snyder didn't do this movie. This movie had so much potential. Well, its hard to say really... most of my criticisms about the movie are nit-picky and circumstantial. A great amount of time was spent on a reinvented Krypton, introducing fans to new concepts about Superman's back-story, and providing rich content for those less avid superman fans, that is, until Krypton is destroyed and a young Kal-El is shipped off to Earth. There the story becomes a little convoluted. An adult Kal-El is now, all of a sudden introduced to the story, and what little information is provided about his childhood is presented in the form of flashbacks. While personally, I would have liked to see a bit more development in this area, I suppose it probably couldn't have been done much better. I mean, entire comic books and even a television series have been based solely on his adolescence. Proper development in this area would have taken another movie, and well, put simply, "aint nobody got time for that". The overall presentation of the movie was absolutely stunning, and Snyder does an excellent job of displaying Kryptonian power to scale, on Earth. The acting was pretty decent as well. It would be hard to not to with such a cast. Henry Cavill did an excellent job of portraying Superman's overall demeanor, almost seeming very Christopher Reeve like in is interpretation of the character. All in all, the only real complain I have about the movie was the lack of character development. If Lois Lane had died in the movie, not a tear would have been shed in the audience, simply because not enough time was spent developing her story, or anyone else's. Doing so, however, would have been a monumental task. This movie done right, would have been two different movies. So, in that sense the "Man of Steel" franchise seems a little incomplete. There is talk of a sequel, maybe then we'll see what this story, and this version of Superman is REALLY all about. Expand

I wanted a Superman movie that didn't cover his origin story but here it doesn't feel like an origin story because it takes place during the same day. What made me angry was everytime superman got tinto a fought he destroyed a lot of buildings and it took away the fact that he is a vigilante. Also it feels that superman evolves as a fighter which makes you way more invested into the character of superman. Expand

Who knew that this would be the only and last good Main line Superman Film in the new era of filmmaking? I'm not counting Batman Vs Superman.

And who knew that a Film from 2013, would still slap so hard, even after all these years? Shocking.

Do I think James Gunn can beat this film, no I don't, while James Gunn is not bad at writing, I don't think he can deliver the action scenes seen in this. Zack Snyder is just magic when it comes to action. I wish we would get films that are this rough, action-packed, but solemn. Superman,For the past ten years, cinema has been swamped by an avalanche of superhero movies. Each one of them, from the most famous to the most obscure, is entitled to his film, in what is still a relentless hunt for box office money. Superman, however, is apart: he has been entitled, many decades ago, to a series of films in which he was played by the iconic Christopher Reeve, but only one of those films deserves to be remembered. More recently, in 2006, we saw an honorable attempt to bring the character back into cinema… but it seems that's what it was, although I think the 2006 film had several merits and qualities. Now, we are witnessing the new resurrection and the new foray into cinema, in a blockbuster where many millions were invested, but which does quite well in its task and gives us everything it promises.

Choosing Zack Snyder made me fear the worst. He's a director I don't think is skillful, he puts a lot of weight on the visual style and forgets to give us a good story. I felt calmer when I noticed Christopher Nolan's involvement in the conception of the story and the script. What the film gives us is a retelling of the same story we already know from the comic book and other films: Kal-El is the only survivor of Krypton, a planet where once lived an advanced civilization which, however, had eventually become corrupted and will explore their planet until destroy it. The film develops the last days of this planet and takes the opportunity to introduce us to characters like Jor-El and the villain, General Zod. The narrative develops very well until it reaches more or less halfway through. From there, the film loses its interest a little, as the story told loses space for successive and destructive action sequences. I particularly liked the way Lois discovers Superman's existence through her skill as a journalist, rather than (as in other films) the hero is always hiding and living a Platonic love for her.

Henry Cavill was an excellent choice for the protagonist, as he has the appropriate age, the essential charisma and adapted his physical bearing to the character's demands without losing his elegance and without forgetting to know how to act. Even so, I felt that the script didn't demand a lot of dramatic or psychological charge from the actor. Amy Adams is effective and does her job well, even though the script doesn't give her anything substantial to work with. Michael Shannon was a splendid villain, giving Zod an unusual dignity: he is not a madman, a psychopath or a deranged, he is the product of a failed social conception that conceived him to do only one thing… he is not adaptable nor can he be, he is doomed to disappear with the planet he was born to defend. Russell Crowe also did an excellent job in the role of Jor-El. In addition to these names, the film features guest appearances by Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne.

In addition to a pleasant story (which only loses itself a little in the second half), this film is a visual show at the level of what Snyder already used us to, with massive CGI, green screen and several other expensive resources, very well executed. There's no doubt that the film didn't skimp on the technical budget, and the result is astounding: Krypton has never been this wonderful, with amazing cities and flying creatures that look like they came straight out of "Star Wars" or "Avatar". The action scenes, particularly in the final half, are quite remarkable, with a lot of destruction and spectacular explosions, as well as incredible and visually impressive spaceships. The cinematography is beautiful, crisp, well executed and well shot, the colors are bright, clean, and the sets and costumes are very good, particularly the hero and villains costumes. The sound effects are really good, they work really well, and the whole soundtrack does an excellent job.

Its relatively thrilly, certainly fast paced and is jam packed with CGI, so pretty much what I imagine most people would expect of such a film. I found it relatively engrossing and I thought that both Russell Crowe and Christopher Meloni did quite well in their roles, with Crowe's being more memorable as Clark's real father. Laurence Fishburne is also present, playing Perry White - the Daily Planets editor.

However, if I had to be negative, I'd say that the volume of special effects present in some scenes did perhaps become a little OTT (over the top) and some of the realism disappeared (due to the scale of explosions etc. in such a short distance area), which was a bit of a shame. Towards the end of the film, there wasn't perhaps quite as much to the plot as I may have liked there to be but it certainly quite watchable and entertaining never the less.

If your a fan of series like 'Smallville' and the 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' series of the 1990s, then I reckon its likely you'll enjoy this. It did feel suitably atmospheric at times, in scenes set outside Earth. Its not quite 5 star material exactly but its pretty close - its certainly an entertaining watch for close to two and a half hours, so I'd recommend it on that basis. I'm not an expert on the character to be able to comment on how true to the original stor(ies) it is but I certainly enjoyed it in terms of being an engrossing, somewhat escapist type watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man of Steel is a movie that can just be described with one word - Metal. This movie is absolutely metal. If you don't like movies that have a grim, dark nature you will probably not like it. It's one of the biggest criticisms given about this movie. But for someone like me who actually likes a washed out colour palette, this was an excellent depiction of how low a simple, ordinary man would feel if he suddenly realises something is different about him, and when he has to keep all of this a secret because of how people might react when they see him.

The movie begins on Krypton. Until now no Superman movie had ever shown how awesome Krypton looks. I really liked the depiction. Like I said earlier, this movie is metal. The introduction scene of Krypton already speaks volumes about it. The visual effects, the music, the acting, everything makes the situation look very serious.

Then later the movie moves to Clark's childhood. In the first viewing I didn't understand why he suddenly started behaving weirdly after he saw everything with his X-ray vision. It was on the second viewing I understood he's slowly getting all his powers. This Superman isn't born with all powers. He is slowly receiving them. Then later he saves the children when their bus falls in the water. You can actually feel how tense the situation is. And when he did save them, instead of being appreciated, he had to face the consequences.

After he grows up and becomes a man, he has to deal with being an outcast. Someone who is treated like a freak can never be a beacon of hope. This can happen only if either he's treated nicely and encouraged when he uses his superpowers, or if he has never been ridiculed over it. The comics portray Superman to be a happy man, but they never show the mental pressure he has to go through in order to get that smile. And this movie absolutely nails it. Also keep in mind he's still Kal-El, or Clark Kent. Not Superman yet.

When he had to find his father, he didn't fly over there. Nor did he run at super speed. He walked all the way trying to hitch a ride. And when he finally reaches there, he doesn't straight-up start flying around. He takes his time to learn to fly. He crashes everywhere, and we can actually feel how much he's struggling to keep his balance. It's like when we learn to ride a bicycle or skate for the first time. We make mistakes, we fall. But then we get up and try again.

And when the Kryptonians arrive on Earth to take over the planet, they are trained soldiers who have learnt all their life that Krypton has to be saved no matter how harsh the means are, and they have all the technology they need to convert Earth into Krypton. On the other hand Kal-El is just a man who learnt to use his powers. He struggled a lot but finally managed to keep them all away. And finally when he kills Zod, he cries. He cannot handle the trauma of taking his fellow Kryptonian's life.

The only problem I had with this movie was, well, people are getting so many things to criticise over. These points make sense only on a second viewing or pausing the movie and introspecting about it. This isn't possible when watching a movie in a theatre. Probably that's why the movie wasn't very well received back when it released. But it's good to see it's finally getting the praise it deserves. I hope this movie gets more appreciation in the future. After all, it's the movie that made me like Superman. Before that I used to just see him as an ugly nerd who wears underwear on pants.

Loved it, its the Superman movie that should have come out in 2006. Snyder brings basically two films into one in terms of superman the movie and superman 2, fantastic adaptation.

Dragon Ball Z × Superman × Zack Snyder = MOS

An outstanding and realistic approach on the Man of Steel. The flashback scenes, action sequences, cinematography, score and casting were executed in meticulous detail. Zack Snyder leaned heavily into the immigrant approach to Kal El's story, which I appreciated deeply. In my humble opinion, this is the greatest superhero film to grace cinema.

My favorite moments in this film are;
1) Fall of Krypton 2) Smallville fight sequence 3) The final fight sequence with Zod & Superman

Expand

I enjoy Marvel but they go for "fun" rather than darker, more "realistic" approach which Snyder did perfectly. Some people complain that this is not the Superman they grew up with and yes, I agree. But who cares, this much, much better than comics and old movies with Christopher Reeve! Every time I watch Man of Steel I love it more. Don't listen to Snyder haters, just watch it. Hope, they'll restore the Snyderverse. Expand

The first DCEU movie that started it all. It is very good and acceptable, although it is not up to par, but some scenes were great and superior to the film itself.

The scene of the first flight of Superman is the one that I liked the most in the movie actually and I liked it a lot and his music is excellent for that scene and the most remarkable and superior part of the movie.

Although, it has several holes in the script and the story and the ending is somewhat satisfying and somewhat average but still a good ending to this movie. This movie is one of the good and remarkable things that the DCEU has and I recommend you see the movie, you won't regret it. The movie and the story are okay.
