A good movie and a good closing for the franchise. Harrison Ford is great, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as well.

Amazing movie. Does justice to the character and storyline. Don’t listen to all the negativity this movie took a big risk and I honestly think it succeeds. Overall a very enjoyable and impressive movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The underwhelming ending of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is better If you come in thinking that the lame rumored ending is true. Otherwise such an action packed adventure needed a more exciting ending. That is at least better than the ending that some fan on crack made up. That Indiana Jones erases himself to make it his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) who went on all his adventures all along.
A lot of fans weren’t excited because they actually expected that ending. Thinking they knew for sure that was the ending.
Thank god it isn’t but the one we got is kind of cute and heartwarming, just underwhelming. Now that I got that out of the way. The movie feels like a more old school Indiana Jones adventure than Crystal Skull.
Indiana also isn’t pushed aside so his Helena Shaw gets all the action. He actually gets more if you count the CGI beginning. While Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) was made to be a villain in an Indiana Jones film. Toby Jones is also perfectly cast as an Indy sidekick in the 1930’s.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is well cast and has the look of an actress from the 30-60’s. You’re just not going to like her throughout if you think she is there to steal the franchise. Which it is dumb if anyone thought that. When Harrison Ford will never ever let anyone replace him as Indiana Jones

It’s long and needs some tightening up and has too many chase scenes. Some of the dialogue and more emotional scenes are good but feel slightly off. Nevertheless it’s really enjoyable (in a way that Crystal Skull was not). The new characters work on the whole. The whole movie is not quite the nostalgia fest that the trailer suggested (though there’s a little bit of that). Seeing Indy as an old man in the late 60s is probably my favorite part. A bit wistful.
One good thing going for it is when it’s over it leaves you thinking about it for a while, even if you’re not sure how much you liked it.

The film is the fifth chapter of the legendary series on the most famous archaeologist in Cinema, and ends it with a flourish.
For the first time Steven Spielberg is no longer directing, just as George Lucas is absent in the conception and writing of the subject, of the story (but both are still executive producers).
The engaging and interesting screenplay, written by Mangold together with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and David Koepp, is an exact mix of action and insight.
Although this film comes out 42 years after "Raiders of the Lost Ark", it is set in 1969, 33 years after the 1936 story and picks up the events 12 years after "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
It can be considered a better episode than the previous 2008 film, although inferior to the first and third.
Directed by James Mangold works, is effective, and does not make Spielberg regret too much in infusing the work with the right dose of passion, sense of entertainment and irony, on the iconic notes of John Williams.
Formally it is impeccable: the breathtaking style of the sequences - especially the chase ones - goes well with the quality technical-visual sector (scenography, photography, accurate editing; but also the special visual effects that rejuvenate the protagonist are excellent).
The eighty-year-old (but in dazzling form) Harrison Ford is not affected by the passing of time, indeed, with his character he travels through it; while his duets with his goddaughter color the story of a fragile and unexpected humanity (Indy this time is caught in a new perspective, the melancholic and twilight one of the final part of his life and his retirement from academic life, but also the one that he sees uneasily in a world that begins to flow differently and in which he doesn't know if he's ready to face one more last race).
The rest of the cast is all in part (Mads Mikkelsen as villain is convincing. Phoebe Waller-Bridge brilliantly manages to play Helena, making her shrewd and feisty – with her self-sufficiency, audacity and resourcefulness, she carries an echo of the past, rekindles the enthusiasm for adventure and gives new life to Indiana Jones. Finally, Ethann Isidore, who gives the face to the very young Teddy, can't help but make one think of the Ke Huy Quan present in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"), and their characters they show a very touching human frailty (Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies, driving Indy to the airport, tells him he misses waking up every morning wondering what adventure the day will bring).
Associated with the theme of the inevitable passing of the years is also the idea of Time travel (one's problems cannot be erased by changing the past, but one can always remember the good that a person has given and experienced...).
The archaeological mystery linked to the Antikythera machine built by Archimedes is truly intriguing and also gives meaning to the last adventure of an Indiana Jones who lived for a long time in the past and now has to rediscover himself and the importance of the present.
In terms of narrative construction and staging, there is perhaps a lack of authentic and intense charm (sense of wonder, epic scope and original ideas), but the film, which moves between nostalgia and vitality, is nonetheless very enjoyable and pleasant. The film is a thrilling and exciting adventure, which, between evocative atmospheres and great entertainment, good rhythm and final emotion, greets the saga with respect and affection. Score: 7 / 7.50 out of 10

With all respect to Disney executives, but somehow they haven't put too much focus to completely destroy this movie, like they do with everything in last couple of years. I really enjoyed the movie. I didn't liked character of Helena Shaw, but somehow I got convinced that relations can go this way. Especially with how this relation is developing.

When reading other reviews, I got impression that others thinks that Lost Ark was perfect movie. IMO it's not. 8 because Uncharted was a horrible movie and yet it get 6 from the audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: -Opulent Mediterranean locales vaguely reminiscent of Hitchcock: smart
-Packaged more like a thriller than an adventure: smart
-New sidekick is another great foil for Indiana Jones: smart
-This anti-Indy foil has its own anti-short round: smart
-Final act: smart
-Ticker tape parade will cause lo-res pirate copies to glitch: smart
-Intro scene in Germany well-shot, fun

Cons:
-De-aging technology looks surprisingly bad: rubbery, fakey, hokey, ridiculous
-Needs an edit: (some scenes drag or don’t work)
-Trailer spoils some clever gags
-Marion from Raiders shoe-horned into story

This movie is not hyper woke by any stretch, nor is it overtly political. It just has a spunky female character. Everybody chill out. What's overlooked in these discussions is that these movies have always been this way. It was a trope in the 80s for there to be a male lead who was treating a female character like a damsel in distress, only the female character turned out to be ballsy and not need saving at all. It's Princess Leia in A New Hope, grabbing the blaster, telling her "rescuers" that they're basically idiots and leading the charge to escape.

As far as what's ACTUALLY on screen in this movie, it was decent. It felt underwritten. The jokes don't land. Ford seems to be giving a committed performance and it's a pleasure to see him put his heart into something and remind us all of the actor he once was before he settled into grumpy cameos. The final sequence was truly beautiful. But much of the movie is noisy and overlong, intersperesed with real charm.

It was definitely mixed but I enjoyed it.

Have to say, I really don't get why so many (esp. the sharper critics) are bagging on a sincerely made, heart-in-the-right-place tribute to the original movie. After the low point of Crystal Skull things could only go up. And if I'm being honest, every film after Raiders was diminishing returns. While I'll always defend Spielberg, it seems like it took James Mangold to get us back to the essence of the original film - and know to know what to do with one character in particular. It's certainly a tough crowd this summer, but I think time will treat this one kindly. Expand

Solid adventure with Indy.
I'm surprised Disney can make a good movie these days. The characters of Helena, Teddy and Indy fit well into the adventure cinema, as well as the main villain of the story. The adventure honors the series, has eye winks for fans, and offers its own merits about coming to terms with the past. The characters learn lessons from the adventure, and the film does not try to moralize by force, which is a great plus.

Granted, some offerings of this type genuinely deserve whatever grief they get, but others, such as the latest installment in this long-running franchise, don’t merit unfair potshots fired at them just for innately being mainstream offerings. In many ways, this is very much cut from the same cloth as its action adventure predecessors, but there are enough distinctions, new developments and lesser-known elements to keep it fresh and interesting throughout. Now, this is not to suggest that this final entry in this action adventure series is without its faults – it’s overlong, some of its action sequences could have been easily pared back (despite generally being as good as they are) and the storyline tends to sag somewhat in the middle. However, Indiana Jones has once again given us a rollicking good time with a captivating narrative, an intriguing assortment of twists and turns, and an array of colorful characters all vying for their piece of the pie (if not the entire pie itself). The film also provides fans of the franchise with deftly handled touches at achieving closure for the series, without dangling obvious or ambiguous carrots of there being more to come or any kind of impending reboot. Director James Mangold successfully puts the series to bed and tucks it in nicely while rounding off any remaining edges, something that it and its fans deserve. So, to all those cynics out there who are shamelessly bashing this release to be fashionable or hip, all I can say is “pipe down and lose the attitude already.” Expand

Personally, I'm able to ignore it and enjoy the movie but this could've been a billion dollar movie if Helena was replaced by Shia LaBeouf's character Mutt (with better dialogue of course). I don't see the movie making more than 500 million in its current state. It's a shame because there's a tasteful atmospheric movie beneath all of this. Expand

Helena takes over at some point and she is really unlikable and annoying. The artifact this time around feels weird for an Indy movie but not as weird as the Crystal Skull. Overall the character arcs felt rushed and the entire climax did too while being annoying. They made Indy look useless and had Helena be almost perfect at everything. The ending doesn't feel earned and it's rushed. I', a bit disappointed, but it's not a bad film. The action is excellent. the opening 30 minutes is thrilling, the score is amazing and some of the comedy is funny. I also really love the acting from Harrison For. James Mangold is a solid director with a great track record and he delivers good action, but in this day of stunt supervisors directing your John Wicks and Extractions, the set pieces are a bit lackluster. Even the truck chase in Kingdom had a playfulness and Spielberg's way of "Rube Goldberg-ing" an action sequence, that Mangold lacks. The beginning sequence on the train was incredible. The ending into the portal was absolutely fantastic. There were some odd choices like how they used Harrison's current voice for scenes with 80's Indy deep fake, which looked real but still slightly artificial, should have adjusted his voice to match his age at the time as well because he sounded like an old man (which Harrison is today). Mads Mikkelsen is an incredible actor, what a joy to watch. Really enjoyed listening to the main Indy theme soundtrack at the end, perfect summer moment. They again made a pretty bad plot that is way over the top and waited to long making the movie. Now Harrison Ford does still a good job but is a bit old for a charismatic hero role in an action movie. A bit dissapointing end for such a great franchise. Altough the movie is still worth watching. The character development is stronger in this film than in previous installments, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge makes an excellent turn as Jones' non-romantic sidekick. This franchise has always succeeded in delighting audiences with thrills and plots that are not meant to be taken too seriously. It's a great summer film, and I for one hope that Waller-Bridge comes back to take over from Ford in future films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched it with my 10-year old son in the cinema. It's solid. It's not Raiders. It's not Temple. But it's solid. Was that de-aging necessary? Probably not. Could I have told if it wasn't for the Interwebz? Probably not. Would I love to see Indy on a giant suspension bridge hundreds of meters above a crocodile infested roiling river, clothes hanging in shreds from a shredded body, instead of a Goonies sized bridge across a small waterway? Yeah. Is Harrison Ford 80 years old? Yeah.
Man. It's Indy. It was fun. My son had fun. It won't win awards and I won't pretend it's memorable. But we got Indy back for one last - decent - ride - that's good enough in my book. My only real complaint is that they should have given Marion more to do...also Mutt RIP (good decision).

Bit of a let down, although I enjoyed the bit players in the movie, Toby Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, John Rhys-Davies and fun cameo by Karen Allen. Felt the film's script was a little cheesy, too many chase scenes, movie is overly reliant on CGI and the de-aging of Harrison Ford, I felt, was distracting and didn't do the movie justice. My favorite film of the Indiana Jones franchise is still Raiders of the Lost Ark. Nothing beats the original. Dial of Destiny lacks the magic and heroics of the first film, but it does provide entertainment and a solid supporting cast. Expand

And for good measure, I had rewatched Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull - my two least favourite Indy movies - before seeing this new movie. And this was a pleasant surprise! Very pleasant even! Maybe the first quarter of the film, I wasn't too convinced yet, but I opened my heart, and I did love the film! Absolutely better than the fourth one, for sure.

Now, was this movie needed? That's a tricky question. If Indiana Jones 4 didn't exist, then no, this new one would feel unnecessary. But in the real world, this Indiana Jones 5 offers a rather entertaining epilogue. And now, I almost feel bad that the film apparently couldn't find an audience. If you were a fan of Indiana Jones, but were disappointed by Indiana 4. do give this new movie a chance, this might just bring you the closure that you didn't know you needed.

I had a great time with this movie. It's not a masterpiece, but it's fun and entertaining. The Dial of Destiny is a good addition to the Indiana Jones franchise.
It takes place in interesting locations, there are a lot of action scenes and a great feeling of adventure.
I don't like how they portrayed Indy as being sad and sulking about his life, and this was a really negative point for me, but it doesn't ruin the movie or anything.
It can be super over the top, but Indiana Jones' movies have always been like that, and it's part of it, it doesn't take itself too seriously and neither should we, it's a cool and entertaining movie.
I am a bit contrary to most Indy fans out there, I really like Crystal Skull and dislike Temple of Doom, I know I'll get hate for saying this, but it's just so you know where I stand when it comes to this franchise.
Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) can be annoying at first, but she manages to become likable as the movie progress. Maybe Harrison Ford was only in it for the money, but he still delivers great acting and I gotta say, the beginning of the movie, with young Indy, is fantastic both in technical terms and scenes, the whole train section was amazing.

While she does spend too much time providing unfunny comic relief, her character is in no way disrespectful to men. That being said, I have mixed feelings about “Dial of Destiny”. Early in the film, there is a thrilling chase scene that takes place at a parade in New York. It was really cool to see Indy in a 1960’s setting. Unfortunately, the entire second act feels lethargic, since it takes place in the middle of the ocean.
I have more thoughts, but I’d either be beating a dead horse with all the reviews already posted, or giving spoilers. Overall, I prefer “Dial of Destiny” over “Crystal Skull”. Whereas that movie was utterly mediocre, there are things to like in this one. But don’t expect it to be as good as the classic trilogy.

Based on everything we knew about the movie, I thought it was gonna be bad or mediocre, but it was actually great. Now, I don't expect anyone to agree, it's for sure a hot take, but to me, this movie was everything I didn't think it would be. The first 15 or so minutes where Harrison Ford is de-aged is fantastic. It's fun and exciting and feels like it could be a scene from the original trilogy. After that, ew flash forward to 1969, where Indy is around 70. After that, the actual plot starts and we get introduced to Helen, Indy's goddaughter. A lot of reviews made her sound innsufferable, but she wasn't, but she wasn't per say likeable. i wasn't fuming whenever she opened her mouth, but I never got attached to her. Both other acts are also fantastic. The action isn't as spectacular as the other movies, but still a lot of fun, the comedic bits work well, and the ending is truly perfect, and I'm happy we got this movie, and didn't end it on the note we did in Crystal Skull. I do kinda get why people wouldn't like the movie, but to me, it was everything I didn't think the movie would be. A truly fantastic final entry and a movie I will defend with my life! Expand

Every bit as entertaining as it was sacrilegious. Dial of destiny is an impressive use of the original film cast shot quite nicely with a decent effort to keep the pacing close to the Spielberg style. Sadly the screenplay and casting of Phoebe as an unattractive mary sue sidekick and a bizarre focus on some random CIA agent character really dragged the film along IMO. Still considering how much worse I had expected this to be I was pretty impressed.

It was exciting, adventurous and just plain delightful to watch! The 4th entry which came out 19 years after the 3rd movie was unfortunately not as entertaining but it did have a solid ending that felt like a finale. So to my surprise, 15 years later we now have a 5th entry with an even OLDER Indy! Is this a step up from the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? or is it another pointless sequel?

The first 20 minutes of this movie is a flashback sequence with a de-aged Harrison Ford. It is one of the best sequences in this movie. It gave me a lot of the vibes and energy of the original trilogy. The stunts, staging, and action were classic Indiana Jones. There are some other great action set pieces as well such as the parade sequence and the Tuk Tuk chase which were thoroughly entertaining. The cinematography is also a huge step up from the 4th entry. The movie is pleasant to look at for the majority of the runtime. I am also thankful that there isn't as much CGI and greenscreen as it was in the previous entry. There is still CGI but it isn't as terrible. Additionally, The legendary composer, John Williams, returns and continues to deliver an epic score in Dial of Destiny. On that note, Harrison Ford still has it. He is still great as Indy and I don't get the 'phoning it in' feel that I see with a lot of older actors. This Indy is not as upbeat as he was in the original trilogy and some would even say grumpy. I don't particularly mind it and it was great seeing Harrison deliver some strong, poignant moments as the character. He still has the quip moments that you would expect and Harrison still manages to do it so naturally. Mads Mikkelson plays the Nazi antagonist and I love it. It is genuinely perfect casting. Boyd Holbrook plays the henchman and he is terrific at being so hateable which I enjoyed. Antonio Banderas also has a small role as a friend of Indy and I liked him a lot in his limited role to the point that I wish we got more of him. John Rhys-Davies and Karen Allen return as Sallah and Marion respectively. Both are just cameos but it was nice seeing them back in the final entry.

Sadly, this movie has plenty of issues. The de-aging is just very distracting. Visually, it looks all right but when Indy talks, it looks off. Even worse is the fact that the voice is still that of an 80-year-old Harrison Ford. It does not match the younger face which creates this jarring distraction. This entry is also the longest at 154 minutes and it is very noticeable. Every previous entry was 120 minutes or less and still successfully told a competent story. This one did not need to be that long and could easily cut 20-30 minutes off the runtime. There are so many slow scenes and padding that drag this movie down.

The most annoying aspect of this entry is the sidekick characters. Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Helena Shaw, Indy's goddaughter. She might be the most dislikable sidekick character in this franchise. Her character is written in a way where she is never truthful, or genuine and is always using Indy in some way for her agenda. She is just constantly at odds with Indy which makes her so annoying. She does get her character development but it comes right near the end of the movie which is way too late. Her development isn't built up organically and just comes off as rather sudden. Even by the end, I am not sure if she even changed that much because her tone comes off as quite arrogant. There are also a lot of pointless characters that didn't add much apart from making the film longer. There is a second sidekick who is a kid named Teddy. He isn't remotely as enjoyable to watch as Short-Round and just felt like he was there so Helena had someone else to talk to. There is also a CIA agent character who added nothing to the plot but took screen time for some reason. Toby Jones plays Helena's dad and is a friend to Indy but he was never in any previous movies. It just comes off as weird to introduce a new friend in a final entry. Overall, this is another disappointing and pointless sequel. There are times when this is way better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but also many times when it isn't. This entry was created to give a better send-off than Crystal Skull but I don't think it was successful in that. It is still a fine satisfying ending but so was The Last Crusade and Crystal Skull as well. So this entry didn't add anything. Still, it's enjoyable enough of a watch but I hope for the love of God that this is TRULY the FINAL entry.

1) Since linguistics and narratology have distinguished syntagmatic and paradigmatic for over a century, beginning the first 2/3 of a movie with an interminable chase makes no sense and postpones the start of the story to when the viewer has already been distracted thinking back to Jolie who in "Tomb Raider" (2001) trained hopping from one wall to another of her own villa.
2) De-aging still produces as mediocre effects as Hanks' motion capture in "The Polar Express" (2004).
3) In the name of neofeminism do you want to include a woman as a co-protagonist? Look for someone that lives up to Sean Connery's charisma, Phoebe Waller-Bridge certainly isn't.
4) In the role of the antagonist, Mads Mikkelsen gives his most anonymous performance.
5) Banderas not reported.
6) Extracted from mothballs and formaldehyde, Harrison Ford gives the worst of his career.
7) Spielberg may also be of Jewish origin, not for this reason he is justified in always identifying evil with Nazism.
8) Some emotion comes only when the feature film slows down and allows the deepening of the relationships between the characters, from the "Ear of Dionysus" cavern onwards. "Nobody memorizes every page of their dead father's notebooks for the money" is a joke that is worth the price of the ticket or viewing. The Syracusan part is also unpredictable, iconic and exciting with the meeting between Indy and Archimedes.

This is a film that was made to be just entertaining enough to be interesting but this is in now way a good Indiana Jones film, it's average compared to what we had yes even crystal skull.

So why do I give it a 6?, there are some good themes here, they are consistent but everything else is just bad.

You name it.
CGI, music,Villian, characters, story, logic, all of those are done poorly.

Disney please leave these franchises alone, they had their time before make something new. As for you Kathleen, it is clear that you have no idea what you are doing, I still wonder why George even gave his beloved franchises to Disney in the first place, only to be mistreated.

That's all I'm saying, the next thing I may be interested in is the Bethesda IJ game. But if Starfield is just OK, does that mean the IJ game is gonna be mediocre?

Talking about this makes me sad so I'll stop.
