Some are quick to mention that it is a Covid production as if that alone can automatically limit the quality of a movie. It doesn't and it didn't: the restraints of that context gave the film simplicity and honesty, enough room for character development and a closeness to it's characters that is so ironically rare in the age of reality tv and social networks.

It's perhaps a little sugar-coated, but it's a film that seeks to treat its viewers with seriousness.
I've never understood why some films that deal with similar themes tend to trivialise and simplify the issue. Given that almost the entire film takes place in the same location, you need your actors to have chemistry and charm to keep you engaged in what is basically 95% dialogue, and both Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack manage to deliver strong performances that keep you invested in their interactions because of the effortless way in which they occur and unfold. Yes, it's a pretty modest film that plays in a relatively safe area, but it doesn't lack quality, nor does the exposition of its theme falters.
I actually found it much more competent and interesting than I expected.… Expand

It's not getting there, it's how that matters: An entertaining and fresh reflection on sex in middle age, in a four-act comedy, with a mini-cast featuring an unusual but courageous Emma Thompson.

Funny, refreshing and full-on sexy. Surprisingly suspenseful for a movie that mostly takes place in one room and with lots of chit chat. Seems to make it all the more intimate. McCormack's performance adds the right amount of genuine warmth with sexual charm and physical appeal. Of course, all of the press is about Thompson's nude scene, which is entirely appropriate. Here final close-up sums it all up beautifully. This is a genuinely appealing intimate two-hander about a short-term relationship that results in long-term changes for them both.… Expand

'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' is an important film on so many levels. Not only does director Sophie Hyde tries to start a conversation about sexual desire in mature women and their reservations because of the "what would people think?"'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' is an important film on so many levels. Not only does director Sophie Hyde tries to start a conversation about sexual desire in mature women and their reservations because of the "what would people think?" stigma; sex workers' rights, body positivity, the sadness of letting your parents down, and the guilt we tend to associate with pleasure are all tackled here with a remarkably funny and quite intelligent film. Katy Brand's solid screenplay, which has the main characters chatting in a hotel room for almost 90 minutes, is elevated by Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack's acting; both are incredibly charming in this. Do not let the "single location" premise spook you; Hyde creates a very engaging world within these four walls, and the emotions, reactions, and feelings portrayed there are very honest and powerful. P. S. If you love Alabama Shakes and Brittany Murphy, prepare for an excellent musical moment.… Expand

Sex is one of those topics that many of us still have a lot of trouble not only talking about, but also freely acting upon. So it is for a retired, widowed religious education teacher (Emma Thompson) who wants to experiment and experienceSex is one of those topics that many of us still have a lot of trouble not only talking about, but also freely acting upon. So it is for a retired, widowed religious education teacher (Emma Thompson) who wants to experiment and experience much of what she has missed out on most of her life while she still has the chance, a decision she acts on by availing herself of the services of a hunky young sex worker (Daryl McCormack). But, when the time comes to get busy, she finds herself uptight, tongue-tied and unable to let herself go, something her hired gun helps her work through over the course of several sessions together. In essence, he becomes her therapist as much as her gigolo, counseling her on the merits of embracing pleasure and shedding the inhibiting practices of her past, lessons that she, in turn, employs in helping him to resolve issues of his own. The dynamics of this unusual relationship are intimate, therapeutic and often funny, making for a diverse and emotive viewing experience. While director Sophie Hyde’s fourth feature outing can be a tad stagey at times (this vehicle would make a great stage play), screenwriter Katy Brand’s script is generally crisp, engaging and insightful, and the chemistry between the film’s two leads is captivating, especially in the variety of moods involved in their dialogues and interactions. Their performances are outstanding as well, particularly Thompson, who has garnered a well-earned Golden Globe nomination for her fiercely superb portrayal. “Leo Grande” may not have generated much fanfare, but this online release is certainly deserving of whatever attention it receives, serving up a bundle of laughs, heartfelt moments and a fresh perspective on sexuality, one that could potentially have a rejuvenating impact on those in need of reevaluating their views on this topic before it’s too late.… Expand

Um filme que tem como suporte o diálogo entre dois atores em ótima performance (diria até mesmo que Daryl McCormack se sai surpreendentemente bem em frente à Emma), filmado quase inteiramente no mesmo quarto, discutindo sobre a liberdadeUm filme que tem como suporte o diálogo entre dois atores em ótima performance (diria até mesmo que Daryl McCormack se sai surpreendentemente bem em frente à Emma), filmado quase inteiramente no mesmo quarto, discutindo sobre a liberdade sexual de uma sociedade inteira, sendo seus corpos apenas o gatilho inicial para tal.
Por mais que o filme navegue entre a prolixidade de certas passagens e a caricatura que vai se desconstruindo com uma ou outra fala, e ainda adote tons satíricos de autoajuda, a firmeza com que os personagens vão sendo construídos, cada um com seus medos e anseios, ela pela sexualidade reprimida e relação coma família, ele pela necessidade de imponência mesmo tendo traumas especialmente com a mãe, é um filme extremamente necessário para uma sociedade que se diz liberal, mas que no fundo é altamente reprimida. Foucault teria orgulho.
Infelizmente as cenas de sexo em si poderiam ter sido bem mais do que foram apresentadas, é basicamente um filme teatralizado, onde os diálogos imperam e o minúsculo espaço também. Mesmo contando com cenas de vergonha alheia em alguns momentos, assim era para ser, com os personagens descobrindo-se um ao outro num total de quatro encontros em que é nítido o agigantamento de Nancy a partir de sua libertação às amarras patriarcais que lhe prendiam, especialmente por ter sido uma professora de ensino religioso bem conservadora.
É delicioso ver a beleza de Daryl encarnando o personagem Leo Grande, um michê que consegue ao mesmo tempo manter o distanciamento e o respeito à parceira com que quem contracena, como ao mesmo tempo mantém o olhar triste de quem ainda tem muita coisa a dizer, e o faz somente nas cenas finais.
Lotado de um didatismo que pode incomodar aqueles que preferem um cinema menos explícito, o filme abraça a bandeira feminista e desconstruída, mas o mais importante é que toca nas feridas clássicas do conservadorismo, como o sexo mais liberal, o casamento de fachada, o medo da exposição. Tudo isso é lançado em tom de "sessão da tarde", claro, com poucos nus, lembrando o fraco "Cinquenta tons", e tornando o saldo frio, mas com pitadas de reflexão que podem render uma boa discussão.
Por se tratar de um filme teatralizado e de atuações, pode-se dizer que ambos se saem muito bem para a proposta, ainda que seja tudo muito contido para agradar a família tradicional, mas por ter um certo papel de desconstrução, torna-se um produto altamente necessário numa sociedade que ainda está aprendendo a navegar entre a liberdade autoconsciente e a banalização do sexo.… Expand
