This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely amazing. A love letter to fans. It makes me super excited for the future (the end credits are to thank for that). A childhood dream come true for me and my dad. Definitely in my top 3 Godzilla movies of all time and I would argue, fighting wise, it is the best Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With a mediocre plot and some fairly sizable holes that you simply need to accept and move on, yet again, the monsters are the stars in this third installment of the Zilla Universe. Brand new monsters with some compelling mythology make this movie worth the ticket price. The movie fails to deliver any real stand out performances by the human cast, but who watches this for a good story? Am I right? The exciting, new, powerful and honestly, fantastic Titan battles left that pleasing feeling of satisfaction at the end of the 2 hour and change run time. The movie left an opening for more of these monumental kaiju standoffs and I cannot wait! Tip a forty for Boston. Let's do a Euro-trip next. Expand

What have we here? We have confusing motivations, hammy dialogue, and an underdeveloped script, but something about it combined with the stunning visuals just completely sell this movie for me; ending up being kind of charming because of that balance between terrible and outstanding. The action was just everything I could ask for! The fights of the titans were just incredible. Their designs were very nice, one of the monsters is basically a Hydra (where's Hercules when you need him?). Godzilla is just amazing in this movie. I just had a blast, almost enough to ignore everything else. Expand

This is the ultimate fan service from Michael Dougherty. A good time to be a kaiju fan. The movie is great. Badass monsters fighting, definitely better than Godzilla 2014. Phenomenal. Can't wait for Godzilla vs Kong next year

The story was beyond stupid. It's like the script was written 15 minutes before they started filming. Monster battles could have been longer imho.

I liked the 2014 Godzilla movie, but this sequel is a titanic mess.

Good news first. The kaiju part of this movie is great. Not just the CGI quality, but the actual battles make sense. There are plenty of references to old japanese Godzilla movies, such as Ghidorah being an extraterrestrial life form and Mothra being an ally to Godzilla. The point of the movie is to depict Godzilla as the king of the monsters of this world, and quite literally, many monsters come from around the globe to kneel before Godzilla.

Now the bad news. The human factor in this film is just horrible and annoying. More so than the 2014 Godzilla movie. First there are scientists fighting to not have the Titans killed in their sleep for an absurd reason (just like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's similar plot point), a plot which smells of real-world SJW agenda and vegan-like activists. Then there is Monarch trying to observe and study the slumbering Titans, but WTF with that "eco-terrorism" plot? That's just trash. They wasted such a good actor as Charles Dance ("Tywin Lannister" in Game of Thrones) for nothing. And while this is a fantasy action movie, WTF with that flying fortress acting like the Avengers' Helicarrier? Can't Monarch just equip that air carrier with tons of laser guns and "Oxygen Destroyer" bombs? Last but not least, WTF with the ancient civilization ruins in the depths of the ocean, the place where Godzilla goes to recuperate whenever it's injured?

Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, but King Kong doesn't agree with that, and Godzilla doesn't take kind to insubordination LOL There is a "Godzilla vs Kong" film coming next year to settle this dispute. Well, I hope the sequel is better than this.

I've been a Godzilla fan since I was a kid. I can't believe Godzilla KOTM is struggling so much in the box office... It's breaking my heart.

My personal favorites when talking about past movies was of course the original 1954 Godzilla, 1995's Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah and 1991's Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah.

I saw Godzilla KOTM last Saturday in IMAX and absolutely loved it! The incredible visuals, beautiful yet terrifying design of the monsters, the epic movie sound track and yes, even the characters/plot made for one EPIC ride! I will definitely see it again this coming Saturday and have already pre-ordered the BluRay/4K steel book so I'llget it right when it's released. It was without a doubt better than 2014 Godzilla. Yes it had it's faults but it was an EPIC monster movie regardless. The fact that it's doing nearly as poorly in the box office as the obscenity that is the 98 Zilla is utterly sickening... I blame ROTTEN TOMATOES and SO CALLED CRITICS for the poor box office numbers. You can't trust them because they're not true Godzilla fans so they don't understand how the movies are supposed to be. They complain about too much Godzilla in the movie... Really?!? They complain about weak story line and characters... Monster movies are about what???... You guessed it! THE MONSTERS. That's what we want to see and that's exactly what we got!

Most Godzilla movies have had a goofy plot and somewhat weak characters but that's what makes them fun! Some have the underlying message like 1954 being about the atomic bomb, 2016 Shin Godzilla being about the government failing to act quickly when it came to Tsunami relief. This one os no different! It has an underlying message in it as well... Personally I don't think the characters/plot in KOTM is bad when compared to past Godzilla movies. If anything, they have improved upon it.

This was a movie made for Godzilla lovers, directed and written by a true fan (Michael Dougherty) of the Godzilla series ranging all the way back to the original 1954 Godzilla and it shows through with all of the small nods to past films.

Thank you to the cast and crew for making such an amazing film for us Godzilla lovers out there!

Godzilla by Gareth Evans was criticized enormously for taking the name of the mythical Kaiju and just showing it a few minutes. Even I criticize that. But now that the studio gave the monsters priority, it turns out that that wasn't what they wanted. So, how the **** do you please them?

Godzilla was conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons. It had an important message at first and the human characters were never of weight in the stories. Let's be honest. While the original stories were a little better built, they were not impressive either. But that's a separate issue.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters has a laughable story. Motives and consequences are stupid. The story is way too problematic and dumb. Its biggest problem and obvious weakness lies in its own argument.
The criticism is not that the characters don't matter, it's that they should not matter in the first place.
The tragedy of Vera Farmiga's character is ridiculous and completely irrational. Her own grief is discredited when the film tries to centralize the drama in a family when millions of families die because of her actions. Where's the sense in it?

That's why the whole plot fails and the awakening of the titans doesn't correspond to anything more than human hypocrisy. Element that the same film mentions. The awakening of these monsters and therefore all the resulting mess wasn't made to heal the planet, nature didn't provoke it, but it was to satiate the ego of a depressive woman unable to deal with her personal trauma.

Doing that aside in the term of entertainment the film does delivers what was promised. Although not 100% as advertised.
Mothra and Rodan are almost useless to be honest. Both have their moment yes, but here the crucial confrontation is between Godzilla and Gidorah.

The visual effects are spectacular although it's incredibly annoying that once again all the fights occur almost in the dark. That saves money in the details of the CGI but unfortunately for that reason all the fights feel repetitive.

Godzilla: King of The Monsters is a weekend film. Turn off the brain and enjoy two basic hours of entertainment on a massive scale because beyond that, the film doesn't offer anything better.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters addresses the latter problem by upping the number of monsters and fights almost to an excessive extent. The former criticism, though, is not addressed well, as the human characters somehow got worse and feel downright comical at most points in their decision-making and dialogue. While the sometimes stunning action and cinematography truly make this movie look and feel awesome, the plot and development is laughable and paper thin, bringing the movie into Transformers-lite territory. King of the Monsters shows many moments of promise and beauty in its cinematography and kaiju designs and battles, its poor excuse for characters and a story keep this movie from being anything more than a pretty fun but also mindless summer popcorn blockbuster. Yes, the army and government are set on destroying Godzilla even after he saved the world 5 years ago. Yes, every human in the movie makes dumb, bad decisions until the point they realize they have to work with Godzilla not against him. In short, it's a Godzilla movie. Don't go expecting the best script ever. What you will get is amazing visual design and effects (Godzilla, Mothra, and King Gidorah look amazing; Rodan is less stunning), awesome battles between humans and kaiju and between kaiju, bad dialogue that will nonetheless make you laugh out loud over and over. In short, it's a great monster movie. Don't expect any more than that and you will be delighted. If you have seen the two movies that preceded this one in the Monsterverse series (Godzilla and Kong:Skull Island), it will remind you more of the second one than the first. Snappy dialogue, great action, solid entertainment. Expand

A lot of logic is unreasonable to ignore, the emotional line is weak to ignore, but the monster plot has a full classic restore

Monster Line: 8.5
The restoration of many classic scenes is actually enough. It has awakened the long-lost feelings. In fact, it is not so fascinating, but many childhood scenes have been touched.

Feet: 4 There is no obvious problem with the first race to reduce the problem, but most of them have obvious sense of the foot string, and the analysis of the foot color will be thunder.

Average: 5.5

Before watching the movie, you can watch the movie review website. The department is biased towards monster fans, special effects sound and light orientation, childhood with Cogira companionship, and people who want to see big scenes.

FORGET THE CRITICS! I literally made a Metacritic account solely to review this movie.

I grew up watching all those cheesy, supremely awful Godzilla movies from the 70's, 80's, 90's etc. with my dad. This movie not only honors all of those previous movies but in my opinion it COMPLETELY surpasses them. This movie is two hours of pure hardcore Kaiju-fight porn. All of the Godzilla monsters are EXTREMELY true to their iterations from the past.

In my opinion, other than Brian Cranston's limited time in the first movie; this movie's human element completely surpasses that of the first movie. I loved the featured family and Milly Bobby Brown's scenes with Charles Dance are particularly fantastic.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the Godzilla movie that everyone wanted the first go around. This is the movie you've been waiting for.

LONG LIVE THE KING.

What Edwards carved out in the previous chapter, is thrown out and they are starting again, this was a big mistake.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Dougherty is neither answering nor raising the questions. Oddly enough, the director, Michael Dougherty is also responsible for this chalky screenplay that he co-wrote with Zack Shields. But why would they work hard, if clashing towering mythological creatures painted by a bucket full of mashed cgi, could make its audience drool and fill the pocket of the banner with tons and tons of gold- maybe this was too much. At least the makers won't be able to judge someone by that, after what they have pulled off in this latest installment of a long going franchise. But I sincerely, want to go through this. What is it, that makes us giddy up for more of this monster debacle?

Is it the inner child in us, that sees the world with such one dimensional view? Or is it that stereotypical punching bag feeling? Exerting rage for a cathartic release, that we have been piling up for the whole week and are about to take it all out on a popcorn bag. It is not the SMASH SMASH SMASH, as much as it looks like. It is not. For, unlike MCU, they are not focusing a lot on the choreography of the battle, it is still dull. But I'd hardly blame the so called true king of the monsters.

It is the humans I find it difficult to bear on screen. We are told over and over again, to go through the same rigmarole of "Run! Run! Run!". The pitched in emotions are shallow, ergo, the entire track of unnecessarily long cast gets thrown off in the garbage. So, there must be something they have got it right? Yes, there is, claiming it to be mythology- which it is not of that subtext at all- the fanboys are going to have a time of their lives, as all their suffering-- if they consider it to be-- over the ages is about to come alive in the form of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, roaring with his heart out in a gargantuan IMax screen.

"There's too much destruction and rubble." Well considering that they're giant monsters fighting in a huge city, that's to be expected. The monsters looked great, the fights were amazing. The movie had an in your face attitude and some jaw dropping scenes. Stop over thinking it and just enjoy the darn film. Expand

After I left the screening late at night and emerged onto a dark city street at nearly one a.m., I wanted to look up rather than straight ahead, just in case Ghidorah the three-headed dragon or Rodan the giant pterodactyl came screaming down from the clouds. That's not the same thing as saying this is a perfect movie. It's far from that. If you managed to age past 5 years however... Coming from Kong: Skull Island (Which i really liked and gave an 8/10), Godzilla: King of the Monsters goes back to Godzilla 2014, but decides to double down on stupidity in favor of a few more monsters. Don't be fooled, we really only got 4 monsters as the other ones have a combined screen time of less then 2 minutes. And 90% of this movie are scenes about the dumb-ass humans who all graduated from the 80's action movie intelligence school.

Right from the start, the movie takes an incredibly slow and dumb approach to unveiling the monsters. Emma, who deserves to burn in the deepest and darkest pit of hell, is a psychopathic, mass murdering terrible mother with a god complex. Not only does she detonate bombs while her own husband and daughter are right in front of them, she even dares to pretend that she can shrug it off when it 'surprisingly' doesn't go according to plan. SHE is the Queen of the Monsters! She is responsible for every single human death after pushing the button!

It's insulting to think that people defend this as a monster movie, when the writers of the movie themselves put so much screen time into the human characters. It should be renamed; Emma: Queen of Idiocy and Monsters. There are many moments in the movie that are so pointless and forgetable that i wonder why this movie is even around two hours long. There's a whole scene about a marine getting injured in the leg (which no one will even remember) that serves no purpose. The whole idea that an alien is somehow perfectly capable to communicate with Earth monsters doesn't even make sense in a monster movie. The jokes in this movie were so lame and boring that it irritated me. The daughter serves no purpose other than dragging the ORCA, and i really hope child services will remove her from her deranged and lunatic father. The only intelligent character in this whole movie is played by Charles Dance, who basically says: 'You opened pandora's box, yet are surprised when the results are not what you expected?' He actually makes sense there. Every single other character in this movie has the IQ of a Tiger with down syndrome (Google it, they exist). Are there good points? Yes there are:
+ Charles Dance was interesting and convincing
+ The moment Godzilla enters Boston was very impressive
+ The monster battles themselves are very awesome
+ Donald Trump wasn't President

I was bored, and very disappointed in this lazy childish mess of a movie. Just because it's a monster movie doesn't mean you can't have well written characters, sensible plot points and good jokes. Just look at the MCU. I think Godzilla fans deserve better, and i definitely did considering i paid for this fan fiction. It is a bad movie. I give it a 4/10.

The plot was okay – I could have done without the “climate change” talk – we don’t need Godzilla getting ensnared in current events. He is timeless. But the cast was very good as usual and the plot, although a little muddled, moved along. I also thought Godzilla himself looked and sounded more convincingly alive than in previous films in the series, and the cast had some very talented actors (for example, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, and Ken Watanabe), which helped. A lot of fun and nicely done. Expand

It is handcrafted with so much love for the classics both in story and world, with so many memorable moments that left me with a huge smile on my face. It both feels and acts like one of the older era films that has a level of lovable charm to keep it in my memory forever and to feel like I am once again a child, excitedly waiting to see where the biggest influence of my life is going next. If the flaws of the film are accounted for in the future installments of the franchise, then we genuinely have something amazingly special and perfect on our hands that I would gladly choose over all newer movies in other cinematic universes. This is the biggest step for the franchise towards perfection and I genuinely love it to death for all that it is doing. Thank you to all who were involved in reimagining these classic characters for the modern day, it makes me happy to see the big G so relevant again. Long live the king! Expand

Visuals were amazing and the fights were beyond awesome. As most are saying, the story wasnt perfect, but I'd say it serves its purpose to fill space between the action sequences. The score was also really great and had quite a few callbacks to the original movies. I honestly think that they could've done even more monster madness and less of a focus on the characters. They weren't near as bad as in the 2014 film, but they weren't anything special either. This is a 10 in my book just because of how mesmerizing the fights were to me, and that's all I really go to see a Godzilla movie for. Also, the setup for the Monsterverse has a ton of potential and was really set in motion in this film. Really looking forward to what the future has in store for this franchise. Expand

I'm with the majority that believes this was successful in capturing why we love Godzilla despite having a lot of cheesy dialogs which can be seen in every Godzilla film but the fans don't remember the humans that much anyways so we forget that what makes Godzilla greate is the badass monsters, mayhem, and battles. I've seen a lot of films this year and none have moved me as such as this film, which inspired me as a 3D artist to continue working on my craft in order to get a chance to work on an amazing project like this. I believe there's never a perfect film because we all have our preferences and despite the critics, I loved this film and in my honest opinion I thought this film was perfect in how it balanced the human aspect with the monsters and I simply can't wait for next year. If you are a casual watcher (i.e. I don't really know Godzilla, just like monster movies), don`t you worry, this movie is packed with monster actions. The plot is interesting, and the actors did their job well, all of them. The writers made a good job of making the whole flow of the movie interesting, so even if you do not see monsters, you are paying attention.
If you are a Godzilla fan like me (The original Godzilla). This is a great adaptation. There are easter eggs from all movies you can think of, but I will say they are more focused on Godzilla Final Wars (2004) and Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) as source material here. But they take Easter eggs from Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995), Godzilla Destroy all Monsters (1968), you named it. DONT MISS THE MOVIE, IT IS REALLY GOOD ADAPTATION.

Are you going into this movie as a fan of the 2014 Gareth Edwards film who appreciated the sensitive and grounded approach to the larger-than-life ideas therein? If so, you may be sorely disappointed by the rather uncouth and matter-of-fact nature of things this time around. Are you walking in as someone who was tremendously let down by the 2014 predecessor's lack of action and kaiju combat in favor of dry character work and performances? Because you may have just gotten a movie that flies in the face of all that, for better or worse. Are you somewhere betwixt these two groups, enjoying the 2014 film for what it was, but understanding the need for certain elements to change? Well you might just end up in the camp that this reviewer's planted his flag within. This movie is fine. The action is thrilling and brilliantly rendered, featuring a hefty number of moments that'll make you smile. The character work is spotty at best, featuring some of the more head-scratchingly misguided attempts at depth I've seen in a while, but you're at least given a protagonist that has more emotional drive than the 2014 film did. The performances get the job done, with some actors bringing a bit too much to the table than others (I'm looking at you Bradley Whitford). And the lore is -- as always -- sopping wet with imagination and creativity. In short, it's imperfect, but a worthwhile time at the cinema, to be sure. Expand

They should have just done 2 hours of monster fighting and left the humans cast out of it.

Asking Hollywood to craft a complex and thought-provoking human narrative is just asking too much of it in this day and age. They might as well be waiving a white flag of surrender and begging us to grade them on special effects alone. Tywin Lannister is the only one who delivers here.

If you're looking for a lazy summer film to get you into the comforting shade of the theater, this will do the job, provided you turn your brain 'off' before you enter. If you are looking for something intelligent weaved in-between the monster fighting, this ain't it.

Now I do urge anyone to go to the biggest screen they can find and try to open-mindedly turn your brain off (a seeming contradiction but its possible) and just let it all in. Its the very definition of a summer blockbuster, its hard not to have a good time (just accept going into it that this isnt a Nolan film, the script isnt perfect but its absolutely up to the task). Kudos,Warner Bros. You made me feel feelings in a movie (featuring weird-ass creatures) that isn’t a Pixar movie. But then again, the whole world cried at the death of a tinman in a bloated Superhero Movie. Eh,well…

Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Or as I’d like to call it “SHELVE OUT YOUR $50 AND SEE THIS THING IN THE BIGGEST IMAX SCREEN YOU COULD FIND”. This movie doesn’t even need a review, since there are simple things to talk about (not in a “I liked this movie because...Because!” sort of way),but who cares,I’m doing this for a passion,so let’s do this.
For starters, this the most obnoxious, cacophonic, absurd and flat-out bizarre thing I’ve seen at the movie theater so far this year. And for that reason,I love it so much. Writer/Director Michael Dougherty (writer of X2:X-Men United) and Zach Shields understand that this is such stupid material to be taken seriously in a movie of this caliber,so what they do with the Script is you may as well care about the next gargantuan Monster Battle (and not the human aspect) and call it a day,so that you can safely wait for the next round against King Kong next year.
That isn’t to say that the human aspect is boring and/or annoying. Sure, there’s one huge flaw with it,but overall, they were trying to make you feel something for them, even if there’s a Villain reminiscent of the ole’ Saturday Morning Cartoon fever. Once again,Ken Watanabe makes the exposition dump interesting to hear (whether it’s how many monsters there are in this Universe or Godzilla’s abilities etc.),Thomas Middleditch felt like he was in a different movie and there’s a part in here that, just like the rest of the 2hr12’ runtime, feels like what Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom miserably failed to accomplish (the “are you with this creature or do you wanna terminate the creature?” clichè) since Universal doesn’t know how to make movies anymore. (Pets 2 looks so bright, you guys)
As for the Monster Action, yes,it is beautiful and just what I expected: giant Monsters (full of gorgeous CG Splooj) wrecking buildings while brawling it out featuring an aesthetic so artistic, you may as well compare several shots to a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo. The Monsters can also be funny at times, mostly King Ghidorah (the main monster baddie),who has a severe problem with his other 2 heads,apparently...
Suprisingly,it’s also one of the most transcending IMAX 3D experiences of all time. It’s up there with Avatar and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
This is also a huge breath of air not only for all the movies that aren’t John Wick or Booksmart playing in theaters right now,but also for a Personal Crisis of mine. This weekend has been really bad for me,to the point to where I was going to abandon Art forever (it’s a long story),so I have to thank this movie in a way. Its fully artistic (and sometimes foggy) aesthetic gave me hope for the future and my comic art style.
And again, this isn’t a Disney/Pixar movie in the veins of Cars and Finding Nemo, but how they made me feel emotions for a creature wrecking **** is,and will be,SO unquestionable.
However, there are flaws, and these kinda can’t be unforgiven?
Obviously,I wanted more big action. As we were walking out of the IMAX Screening,my brother was like “you can cut the human parts, and nothing changes, since, without that,it’s just big-ass monsters fighting”,and yeah,to a certain degree…
Also,I really really REALLY didn’t care for Vera Farmiga in this movie. Besides “she’s Madison’s (AKA Millie Bobby Brown giving it her all) Mom” and “she’s the one with the MacGuffin”,there’s really nothing to care about her,as she’s just used for the story like a random piece of a 50+ piece Jigsaw Puzzle.
But besides these flaws, when your favorite Movie of 2019 is a brawl between a Giant Radioactive Monster and a 3-headed Dragon (and not the new Jordan Peele movie or the new Marvel “3hrs of Fan Service” movie),there’s really something wrong with 2019. Granted,I haven’t seen Booksmart or Apollo 11,as they still didn’t come out here in Italy.
This is the one where I wanted the cheers and/or the applauses as the movie went by,especially for that 3rd Act,which makes the movie “More vengeful than Avengers Endgame” (I’m trademarking that just now,I SWEAR,if I don’t see this quote on the Blu-ray...)
Godzilla King Of The Monsters is so far the best movie of the year, and it’s a big Plot Twist for goddamn sure.
Also yeah,stay until the Credits.

This leads to a battle royale scenario where in order to survive, mankind must work with Godzilla to defeat this threat and bring back a natural order to the world.

This time around, they seemed to take on board some of the criticism from the previous movie about not using more of the classic monsters Godzilla used to fight in the Toho franchise, so this time they unleash far more titans on to the world. On one side we have Godzilla's partner the great benevolent Mothra showing off her gorgeous wing span and giving us a lot of moments to just be in awe of her beauty. Then on the other we have the destructive King Ghidorah, with his monstrous scale towering over cities raining down destruction from the skies. And when these monster clash it does have some of those epic destructive moments that fans have been asking for and that raise the bar for when Godzilla v Kong comes out in 2020.

But unfortunately it retains the rest of the problems from the previous two films in Legendary's Monsterverse, with these remaining problems being magnified this time around. The new cast is led by married couple Mark and Emma Russell, played by Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga, along with their daughter Madison played by Millie Bobby Brown. Normally in a film like this you'd see parents at least try to take their child away from danger, but here Madison's mother has no qualms with letting her child run around with her on battlefield. At the beginning of the film she even brings her to a secret facility containing one of the Kaiju for seemingly no reason.

The rest of the overcrowded supporting cast is rounded up by Zhang Ziyi playing a researcher of ancient myths relating to the creatures, some more supporting scientists for comedic relief and a bunch of forgettable soldiers. There's also the leader of the villainous eco-terrorists Charles Dance, who's so badly defined we don't really get a justification for how he got to his position other than he used to be a soldier and therefore hates humanity now.

In previous films we had enough human characters like Bryan Cranston, John C Reilly and Samuel L Jackson so the human portions of the movie had at least something to support them. But the only good human character in this film is Ken Watanabe, who has a few good lines scattered throughout the film, but is not given enough prominence in the film to make the human drama work. And when a majority of the film is focused on these human characters, this is a big problem. Especially when there are monsters having an epic battle in the background and instead we're forced to spend our time with these bland personalities we don't actually care about.

There's also a lot of logical oversights throughout the film, with the film ignoring anything it needs to in order for our characters to get where they need to get to in the story. Every character seems to inherit the fast travel ability from the last two seasons of Game of Thrones, with characters having the ability to travel across the globe in a matter of minutes to show up wherever they need to, even if the monsters should have been travelling faster than they do. Characters will also change their motivation to suit the needs of the film, going from wanting every Kaiju dead to deciding to work with Godzilla over the course of a scene.

But if you're a fan of the old Toho monster movies and want to see what kind of chaos these titans can cause on a 200 million dollar budget, this film definitely has a lot of great moments showing us that. But at the same time this film doesn't offer anything on par with the moment we first see Godzilla use his atomic breath in the previous movie and takes us on a bland ride with these human characters to get to these moments.

It's not perfect but I still enjoyed it. There are still too much human for me. I might give it a second watch. Do not expect Academy Award level of writing. It is a kaiju film. Not an Oscar one.

First off, let me preface this by saying yes - I'm a a huge Godzilla fan. Have been for all my life, as evidenced by my massive collection of Godzila figures, clothing, and even my tattoo of the Big G that adorns my left bicep. Whether or not you are a fan will deeply impact your opinion of this movie, as it is a big, overstuffed blockbuster in the vein of the maligned Bay-formers movies. The difference here is that the creative team behind KOTM clearly are Godzilla fans, and it is reflected throughout the course of the film. From a narrative standpoint, this movie has issues. While I will say that the main characters were far more interesting than the piecemeal cardboard cutouts from the 2014 film (sans Brian Cranston), it was laughable how Mark, the film's main character, just happened to know all of the right information at exactly the right time. He was an expert in everything, and knew just what to do at the right time. Given how he was on a ship with literal MONSTER EXPERTS for a good chunk of the movie, they easily could have split his dialogue with designated expository characters, like Ken Wantanabe's Serizawa, to humanize him a bit better. It's also worth noting that sadly, like the aforementioned Bay-formers movies, a lot of humor simply doesn't land, though when it does it's outright hilarious. As is the sheer sustainability of the main cast. You can suspend your disbelief as much as you want, there is no conceivable way anyone could have survived the monster brawls that happened directly over them while the scurried about like helpless ants. But the oxygen destroyer was the biggest missed opportunity in the plot. Being the narrative heart and soul of the very first movie, it only serves to have a glorified cameo here. Now at the film's beginning, we see a Congressional panel grilling Monarch about their supposed failure to monitor these creatures - why not introduce the oxygen destroyer here, with the government saying this is monarch's last chance or this weapon will be used to wipe the beasts out? It also would have better explained why one of the film's villain does what they do, as if the beast's weren't released, they would have been easy targets for the weapon. It would created an interesting question - is there a right time to play god, and if so, when? And how much of the natural order should be preserved at the cost of human existence? Sure, the movie touches on these questions, but in the film's current state, there is something more to be desired. Beyond that though, this movie served as a love letter for Godzilla fans, by Godzilla fans. The biggest issue from the 2014 film was Godzilla's was relegation to a supporting roll in his own film. That is remedied here, as the conflict between him and the enigmatic Monster Zero is the core of the film's plot, as the two battle for supremacy in their prehistoric food chain. Most importantly, the personalities of the monsters are in-line with their original counterparts. Supporting monsters Mothra and Rodan are handled with care and respect, although the latter does unfortunately get lost in the shuffle after his epic debut. It is understandable though, given how packed to the gills this movie is with action set-pieces and visual eye-candy. To a normal viewer, this may seem like chaos for the sake of chaos, but to fans like me, this is Hollywood simply making up for lost time.

Whether it be the phenomenal score that features modern renditions of the classic Akira Ifakube tunes, the sound design that brilliantly recreates the sounds of these titans, or the cutting edge visual effects, the creative team learned from their Eastern forefathers to deliver a product that honors Godzilla's legacy, something that can hardly be said of the previous two American iterations. Your mileage may vary, but as a lifelong fan, and especially as a Massachusetts resident and Red Sox fan, this movie, while certainly not perfect, was a grand slam.

The character development of the main characters and the side characters works organically to tell a great script with some cheesy lines to entertain us from the depressing and dark ambience of the film. The score is beautifully orchestrated, the production was very well crafted and the cgi was done perfectly with a blast for us to experience more realistic monster battle that will take us to a big monster ride. I highly recommend everyone to see this on the biggest screen they can find. Expand

Was it what I hoped for? Sure! Was it more? Unfortunately not but with that being said Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a good film. It has its narrative faults and obvious character faults but the special effects, fight scenes, shots and overall tone are very good. I really enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance and Vera Farmiga though the problem with this film to me was that it introduced too many new characters, most of which are irrelevant to the story and end up taking away time from an already weak central plot involving The Russells, Monarch and Charles Dance's eco-terrorist group. On top of that, although I consider this a minor complaint because in the end it served a purpose but I also felt overwhelmed by all the monsters in this movie when I feel like they should have just stuck the conflict between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidora (whose a more convincing villian than Charles Dance's character unfortunately) because it overstuffs the plot but at the end I can see why it served a purpose. Still, I found King of the Monsters to be a good film. Unfortunately it suffers a bit from sequelitis as its nowhere near as good as the 2014 Godzilla, which gets undeserved flack from people whod rather watch a 3 hour Michael Bay Transformers porn than watch a slow burning, intensely paced monster movie similar to Jaws or the original Godzilla from the 50s. I'm still excited for Godzilla v Kong and further Monsterverse entries just as long as they pump the brakes now while trying to build these monsters and characters trying not to get lost in the shuffle. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a must-see film this summer. For those looking into whether or not to watch this film, I have only one thing to say do not let a negative review from so-called critics dissuade you. If someone didn't enjoyGodzilla: King of the Monsters is a must-see film this summer. For those looking into whether or not to watch this film, I have only one thing to say do not let a negative review from so-called critics dissuade you. If someone didn't enjoy this movie it is because they were watching it looking for something it never was meant to be. So go to the movie and just enjoy a giant monster movie with all the action people felt was missing from the first one and then some. If you want the most out of this movie then take some time and verse yourself in the Japanese films as this movie even though it doesn't require you to recognize them is heavily steeped in small details that fans of the source material will love and feel rewarded for recognizing. This film does what it was meant to give you an all-out brawl between monsters of cataclysmic proportions, all the while dragging you up close and personal with incredible visual effects and some of the most immersive sound ever featured in a film to date. In conclusion, this film makes a promise and then over delivers on that promise all the way using visuals and audio to deliver an experience that will have you feeling as if every bone in your body is vibrating with pure excitement.
