“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was… Different. That’s not to say it was bad, it just hits differently: This is certainly a very "gory" movie, as far as Marvel movies go anyway. This is one of the few Marvel movies that I“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was… Different. That’s not to say it was bad, it just hits differently: This is certainly a very "gory" movie, as far as Marvel movies go anyway. This is one of the few Marvel movies that I feel actually deserved it’s PG-13 rating (Most of them are “PG-13 for babies”). The whole film felt like a grimdark horror movie with some good ol’ “Marvel Pizazz” The first "Doctor Strange" movie treated us with some of the best visual effects in any MCU film. The kaleidoscope aesthetic was something to behold. Tragically, the kaleidoscope effects only appear once or twice in the whole movie. We did get a smorgasbord of other visual effects to feast on however, so I guess I can’t complain too much.

And, as for the narrative… It was a bit “all over the place” for me. I know that it’s a story about the Multiverse (it’s right there in the title) but the story is very disjointed, Multiverse or no Multiverse. Everything felt a bit “stitched together,” which I believe is due to a lot of reshoots. I feel like these mishaps negatively effected America Chaves’ character. This movie is the characters debut, and both her intro and developments in this movie felt rushed. Hopefully she can make some sort of recovery in later films

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was a mixed bag of good and bad elements. Give it a watch, but don’t bring super young kids to see it. 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first foray into the Horror genre on the big screen. In most ways it manages to deliver to an artistic dive into the human psyche, and highlights new terrifying depictions of familiar fan favorite characters. It truly feels like a Sam Raimi film, but it unfortunately fails to deliver on its promise of exploring the multiverse, only really providing us with what feels like a taste of what is to come.

Elizabeth Olsen reprises her role as Wanda Maximoff and shows off her acting capabilities, simultaneously showing us the loving character we fell in love with and a more antagonistic and monstrous side of her. She feels like the true star of the film, leaving Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange to take a back seat and unfortunately become one of the least intriguing aspects of the film.

One other shortfall of the film is its lack of explaining important aspects of how the multiverse and Darkhold work - diehard fans are rewarded with knowledge obtained from watching hundreds of hours of MCU content, but the general audience is left with more questions than answers.

The major flaw is the main antagonist's agenda, which could've been fixed with simple measures and that's that. Besides this, it's an entertaning entry, WAAAAAAY better than the Eternals.

When it debuted, some called the movie a mess. I do not see any mess. I do not see any lack of commitment by director, producers, writer or actors. For me it works as well as Avengers Endgame. Both have villains trying to make life better--in their own twisted ways making them more relatable. I liked this way more than WandaVision. Disney+ has an hour-long making documentary I recommend if of interest.

However the more I thought afterwards about it the more I disliked it. Don't get me wrong as it is an enjoyable movie with a good cast and memorable moments but maybe not that good. Marvels phase 4 is a bit divisive too to be fair. The main point is that the multiverse was introduced in Loki and so there are countless universe out there. Some quite familiar others unrecognizable strange. After the set up scene that introduces this and new characters we go to Dr. Strange who visits the wedding of his former love he lost because of past decisions and obsessions. He is reflecting his life choices a bit when an eldritch looking being chases a woman causing much collateral damages. Here I stop to avoid spoilers. I say the title alone spoils a lot but the trailer was misleading. It is as much a superhero movie as it is dealing with loss, regret, the past and life choices. Another kind of heroes journey and I like this really well. However the choice for the villain I strongly dislike. The character deserved better even when everything is understandable. However it can be solved without conflict really fast and other superhero stories used this solution. If in 1 universe someone has lost someone important and it was in reverse in another similar universe pair those together. They can help heal each others wounds. I expect the YouTube channel “How it should have ended” to use this when they do this movie.Aside from that the twists work well, they introduce a lot of new characters and the visuals are impressing. Also the character development is nice. As I said: Maybe the movie tricked me into believing it was better than it actually was. The actors are excellent. I absolutely loved Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong is my favourite side-character that I enjoy in every Marvel movie and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer surprised me with a great performance. Same is also valid for Elisabeth Olsen as Wanda who gives probably the best performance in the movie.Xochitl Gomez is a strong addition and I would say they could have fleshed out her character a bit more as it is close to being generic. However she save this with a good performance. There are others I want to praise but cant go into details as it would be spoilers. A strong cast but a bit hindered sometimes by the script. The special effects are top notch and gave the movie the Dr. Strange feeling / experience the first movie created.Overall I am still undecided if it is good or just smoke and mirrors that tricked me well. Because I was mostly entertained I give a 7/10. I was leaning anywhere from 5-9/10 but could not pinpoint my doubts. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like that even after the trailers, you don’t really know what to expect. Or maybe I didn’t watch all the ones with the spoilers. Multiverse of Madness was a trippy ride that I wasn’t entirely prepared for.
The film is unlike anything from Marvel you seen before. It definitely isn’t Spider-Man: No Way Home but Doctor Strange.
Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness is more of a dark fantasy. Which Sam Raimi was perfect for. Not because he made Spider-Man movies but because he is an under-rated master of Horror.
He made Evil Dead movies and Drag Me to Hell. That is the Sam Raimi to expect when seeing this movie. Which is what helped make it such a different experience from Marvel.
Spoiler: My only problem is that Wanda wants her kids back with not one mention of Vision.

Raimi’s direction did feel refreshing as a larger part of the MCU but not enough to override the constant cliches, conveniences, and just plain stupid actions of the characters. A small example of this is a scene I’ll describe in an analogy to keep it spoiler free. There’s a bad guy robbing a store. The clerk behind the counter tells the bad guy the other clerk is armed. The robber proceeds to shoot the other clerk. Why would you ever tell the bad guy who was armed? Stuff like this happens constantly in the film. Other complaints is that the villain was too powerful, America Chavez was heavily underutilized, the CGI seemed off (jarringly so) and unnecessary in places, and so on. C-/D+ Expand

It's a shame that the final product is not without its weak points, irregular structure and doesn't fully embrace the weirdness that would have made it a superior movie, but it's far better than what the critic reception made it seem, as well as from the people that dislike the taste for guts, horror and campiness of its creator. So, parts of the story are strong while others are very weak. Not mentioning of the big plot hole right at the beginning of the movie (that no one can miss). Even if you get some special cameos, the multiverse aspect feels safe and constraint. Wildest moments passes very briefly. The actors are uneven. Some of Olsen drama falls flat, while Gomez gets interesting the further the movie advance. Visually the movie is quite a feast, yet the multiverse is kind of very limited. The FX are stunning at times, but way too fast to appreciate. The music is surely a very good point in this movie. I give the movie 68%. While I remain very divided about the validity of this story, I guess the overall package is still interesting. It's good but not great, and require a good knowledge of the previous TV and movies from Marvel. Expand

If you're a fan of the MCU because of its connections throughout all the movies you'll be somewhat disappointed. Elizabeth Olson's acting is the best thing about the movie and what the Scarlet Witch can do. The ending also falters out without any big battle moment, and if people want to criticize WW84 for a very similar ending you have to do the same here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wanda's arc comes to an amazingly well-acted end. Personally I believe those who are saying her leap in character feels off are misinformed. She has gone through a lot, including the events of WandaVision, and was corrupted by the Dark Hold...obviously, she's not in the most stable state of mind.

I do agree, though, Scarlet Witch outshines Doctor Strange in this film, and America Chavez isn't my favourite, but isn't terrible to me either.

The CGI was great and I loved the chase scene.

Sacred Timeline Wanda dying, in the end, feels incredibly tragic, showing just how fleshed out her character truly was.

It is not the best movie, but Scarlet Witch makes it a great, or maybe just good, one. The music fight is also wacky and creative, props to that.

The Illuminati could've just been random characters, maybe. They clearly were done to show off how strong Wanda is - killing Captain Marvel easily. The cameos were neat, but nothing much.

This film is an absolute blast to watch. I was very skeptical beforehand about this being a cameo fest film and while there were some cameos, it was relegated to one section of the film and there weren’t a lot of them. Plus they use those cameo characters in an interesting way. This isn’t perfect by any means and the script is easily the weakest part of the film. The dialogue is definitely VERY rough around the edges and it definitely could have used another rewrite or two but oh my god the directing, performances, and characters are great. I really enjoyed seeing Doctor Strange’s and Wanda’s arcs in this film. Both coming to terms with what they have lost. I really loved that Wanda was the villain of the film. I really wanted WandaVision to go in that direction but it didn’t and it seems that this film rectified that decision and saying what Wanda did in her show wasn’t okay. It’s safe to say here that all of the performances are great. Benedict Cumberbatch is still doing a great job as Strange and Elizabeth Olsen shines as Wanda but Xochitl Gomez shines as America Chavez. I hope we see more of her in the future. My absolute favorite aspect of this film is Sam Raimi’s direction. It truly feels that Kevin Feige just told Sam Raimi to do whatever he wanted as long as he followed the script and my god did he deliver. Besides the first hour, this film is screaming that this is his film. The camera movements, the horror elements, and especially the gore. There was a surprising amount of violence in this film that I didn’t expect to see from the MCU and it was definitely a welcome decision. I do believe though that this film would be so much better if the dialogue was ironed out more but this is so much fun that I can’t hate on it too much. The second post credit scene is also one of my favorites in the MCU however it really only works if you’ve seen Raimi’s other films. Definitely go check this out if you’re an MCU fan and especially if you are a Raimi fan. You won’t be disappointed. Expand

The characters' actions range from inconsistent from what was established in prior films to outright illogical or flat-out inane (the Gigantos sequence was dense with stupid). It's been said numerous times - MCU productions have fallen flat since Endgame, and this entry is no exception. While I can't speak for the casual moviegoer / "normie" audience member, I can speak for film lovers when I say to Disney and every other movie studio out there, What we (the audience) want is very simple: 1) Focus on writing a quality story, 2) Adapt said story into an engaging cinematic experience. That's it. That's all we want. As a bonus, you can add 3) Respect the source material / characters, but ultimately, if you focus on writing a brilliant script then adapting that to a solid cinematic work, your film will be successful. You Hollywood folks seem to love to check boxes. Maybe return to checking the above boxes as your priority and reduce any agenda or lecturing to the subtext, or better yet, leave it out completely. Returning to form by going back to embracing this approach is guaranteed to fill seats. Just look at Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and others that have put story and cinematography first. Take notes and straighten your priorities, guys. Or die a slow death as you slip into obscurity with your remaining tiny audience of ~1,500 Twitter extremist idealogues that you seem intent on catering to at any cost. Expand

I felt a bit disconnected to this film compared to what I remember of the first one, due to it being so centered away from the 'real world' (in New York or wherever) and more set in the various Marvel universes, as the title alludes to. I did enjoy it for the basic entertainment value but I imagine big fans of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) would enjoy this more than me. Even so, I reckon this film desveres a 3 star rating at the least. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a pretty decent performance, given the script and everything. It's hardly great but it's certainly ok. If your really into these kinds of films then yes I'd say it's worth seeing, if not then perhaps not, that's about all I can say really. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was a fun, typically unchallenging superhero movie. America is a super cool new character with a lot of promise as someone who could potentially control the Marvel "multiverse."
The studio somehow keeps managing to up the stakes with each movie but honestly I have no idea how they can get any higher.
Overall it's unflinchingly brutal but very engrossing inclusion to the franchise.

Entertaining, better than the first one but too much points that are WTF, like the fight between Wanda and the Illuminati, the freaking horrible cgi for Strange's third eye and his character development completely **** up.
Before he was so cold blooded for order that said "I will not hesitate to get you and your kid killed if that is necessary to protect the time stone"...and now:

Wanda: "can I have that girl that you don't even know and can't even relate cause you don't have chidren so I can get the **** away from this universe and I won't be a mass murdering trouble?"

Strange: "ahah no"

Seems logic, ah yeah and there's even that scene of America and Strange like:

America: "I can't control my powers!"
Strange: "no you can"
America: "ah ok"
"proceed to beat Wanda that was invincible for the 99,9% of the movie.

Ah yes and Strange is completely USELESS for all the movie.

There's some really cool concepts, ideas, and imagery here but overall as a film its disappointing. The film soars when Sam Raimi is let loose and able to inject his horror style into it, and the film falls flat when its falls back into the same tired bland MCU formula. The script feels really underwritten and rushed, and some of the dialogue is pretty terrible. It all concludes with a massive mind-numbing CGI fest trying to throw everything at the wall to see what it sticks, and it just gets boring...less really is more. There's also some pacing issues, my friend fell asleep for 15mins during the 2nd act. Expand

The villain becomes the bad guy just all of a sudden. The multiverse aspect is cool but its missing the madness. There was more madness in Spiderman but maybe the madness was in relation to the villain's rage.
I enjoyed this alot but I was hoping for something more. I liked the way it looked and was acted but the pacing isn't for me. Usually for a Marvel movie the last half hour has the big fight scene but the big fight starts with an hour to go and it leads to a satisfying conclusion.
I give this a SEVEN. Solid movie but I feel like the villain's reasoning for their actions ignored their backstory. They could have given a different reason why they went mad. It constantly bothered me throughout the movie.

While there are a lot of imaginative ideas and fantastic Sam Rami infused "horror-esque" sequences in here, the film never fully worked as a cohesive whole. Conflicting characterization, weak pacing, and ill defined plot elements made it feel largely unsatisfying, hollow, and incomplete. Although, I did appreciate its ambition and the creative freedom that was given to Raimi... and a couple of those cameos had me jumping out of my seat! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is not as good as some people make it, but it definitely isn't as bad either! At the end, it is a pretty straight forward fun ride with some flaws. The biggest one being that you need to have seen a lot of other stuff to actually get whats going on. At the very least you should have seen the first Dr. Strange, all Avengers movies, Loki, Wandavision and probably a bit of What If...

Whats good or what works? The story is good, compared to other movies it is a very small and selfcontained movie. It is not about saving the uni- or multiverse, it is mostly about Wanda and her trauma and Elizabeth Olsen is simply amazing in portraing her. It is as much a horror movie as Disney will probably ever allow it to be, which is great and you can really see, what Raimi did here. R rated it would have been better, but expect a lot more graphic violence than you are used to. The Doctor himself is also great, he has his own story arc, he goes on a journey and he definitely isn't the same person and the end of the movie. Lastly, most of the effects are really good, I recommend seeing it in IMAX, when you can.

Whats not working? Some of the cgi especially at the beginning of the movie is not very good. Garganto (?) looks very cheesy. America Chavez is bit bland, she is essentially the mcguffin of the movie, she is well portraied and the actress is good, but the character doesn't add much apart from being the plot device. And is just me, or is it very ironic that the first mexican super hero's super power is literally crossing borders? Some of the fan service also doesn't work well, especially the introduction of the Illuminati. They only have a few minutes, but they are portrait as arrogant and incompetent and they look... cheap. I am a big fan of Patrick Stewart, but he is at an age where it is painful to watch him "act". Black Bolt will never work on any screen, the movie makes this very clear. The same is true for the F4, a stretching dude simply is not a great hero. And the few scenes show, that arrogant hateful female characters like Captain Carter or Captain Marvel have no place in a movie.

To sum it up, go and see it. Despite not being perfect, it is fun, it is well made and it is tonally very different from other MCU entries, which makes it really refreshing to watch. Don't listen to all this 0-3 ratings, I don't know what these dudes have seen. I can just assume that these are hateful trolls, that probably can't cope with the idea, that a teen can have two mothers and that they can actually contribute something to the resolution of a movie.

How? By getting a bit darker, reducing the jokes and introducing or expanding other characters. Beneath all the CGI, cameos and confusion is a solid heart of a touching story. A shame it isn’t more at the forefront. Expand

This isFirst off, this movie should have been rated R. It contains extremely gory elements/brutal murder, is full of jump scares, and has other graphic imagery that is just not suitable for a younger audience. It is a bonified horror film. This is far darker than other Marvel movies! Secondly, it is full of satanic themes (the Illuminati, witchcraft, demons/demon summoning, possession, occult rituals, and necromancy). If this clashes with your morals/religious views, I strongly suggest bypassing this movie because of how heavily it pushes this kind of agenda. To be honest, I walked out because it was so disturbing. After doing some research on the end credit scene, I see that Dr. Strange movies will continue to go further down the demonic route. I will not be supporting Marvel anymore. This is not the Marvel we all remember from Phases 1-3. What on earth were they thinking? Last, the plot itself was rather flat compared to other Marvel movies, and while we got a bunch of nice cameos, they were under-utilized in my opinion. The only thing going for this movie was the special effects and fan service. Everything else missed the mark. Expand

Marvel's attempt to make more mature movie results in a rushed movie with forced darkness which is too dark for the typical marvel audience yet quite not dark enough for the mature audience. I will not deny that the movie has its moments but those are over way before the climax. The use of cameos has been terrible in the movie. The way Illuminati are introduced and killed is just preposterous. Whenever they tried building up an epic scene, they destroyed the intensity with crappy and cheesy jokes every time.
