Overall they did a fantastic job bringing the story and music to life. The music in contrast to the 1991 classic is fuller in sound and has a stronger impact. The clear use of auto tune while not too everyone's taste does not take away from the experience. The cast choices are spot on. Emma Watson had a insurmountable task of capturing belle and she does bring all the required emotions to the role. Other notable cast such as Emma Thompson had a great spin on the Angela Lansbury classic that was Mrs. Potts. Ultimately all Disney had to do was take the emotional journey that was the original; amplify it, and modernize it.They achieved that as apparent by the drones of people who are seeings and enjoying this film. It's beautiful to look at and the cast members are all solid in their roles. However, I never found myself thinking that this film needed to be made and nothing about it really built on the existing mythology that enhanced it. Take the 2015 Cinderella, while it was a recreation of the original, the filmmakers made the characters stronger and built on the story to make it a more solid movie. That really isn't done here that's impactful to the story and in the end, it did just feel like a recreation of a great movie. Expand

However, I believe this is pretty close to the animated version. The outcry of a gay character in this movie was much ado about nothing. LeFou had feminine characteristics, but nothing obvious. Overall, I felt the casting was right on point as far as Gaston, Maurice and Beast. I do agree that Jack Black would have made the perfect LeFou though! Emma Watson did her best, but unfortunately for most people, she will always be Hermione from Harry Potter. Expand

An sjw hit piece.

The movie is so bogged down in politics that everything good about gets drown on it.

Waste of screen time, an insult to the classic disney movie.

It was a blatant SJW propaganda film, which should have been expected from an emma Watson lead. Some glowing moments that inevitably get dragged through the mud with forced political correctness.

Ok. Live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast". What works in a cartoon, does NOT work in live-action.
You all know the story, we got this Prince dude. He's like all shallow and superficial and only likes pretty girls. And the supposed message of the movie is that true beauty lies inside. Which is actually crap in and of itself, but let's not delve into that right now. How this movie goes about delivering that message about inner beauty? First, Beautiful Enchantress. Has to be beautiful. Cause if it was ugly enchantress that turned Prince into Beast, that's just cruel. But if she's beautiful then she must be kind and it all must be some kinda lesson. Next. The Beast. Oh come on! You call THAT "The Beast"?! Its a goddamn big fluffy anthropomorphic lion with cute horns. An animated Beast was scarier! There is no real challenge in falling in love with him once he stops being a total dickwad. Enchantress should've turned him into a friggin Alien monster! See if Belle could drop a kiss on that mucus dripping mug! And anyway. Are we teaching Belle about importance of inner beauty? The Belle. Ok. So the main reason for Enchantress to put a spell on The Beast was to teach him a lesson that a pretty face is not all that important and all that "don't judge the book by its cover" crap. Enter Emma Watson. Come on! I would read through any book with that kinda cover! Even if it was full with boring "data reconfiguration and statistical analysis" reports! What kind of a lesson is The Beast learning? That if you are:
1. Big and powerful
2. Own a castle
3. Not a total jerk (this is why its a fairy tale, in real life if you got the fist two covered, you can be a jerk)
Then you still get the pretty girl, even if you got a "setback" of looking like a big cute lion with curly horns. Anyway, you still turn into pretty boy after she plops a smoochie on your hairy face.
What is the lesson learned here? Come on, really? To really get the message across, Belle should've been the fugliest girl in the village, and The Beast should've stayed in beastly form, no matter how many kisses.
That stuff should've remained animated! Was way easier to suspend disbelief.

I was NOT disappointed and left the theater genuinely happy. It is for the most part the exact same story, with some slight alterations to add more character development to Belle and her Father. Much like most Disney live action films the casting was spot. My personal favorites were the amazing chemistry between Josh Gad as LeFou and Luke Evans as Gaston. The best way to describe 2017 "Beauty and the Beast" is the same thing I said about Cinderella (2015). If you seen the 1991 version then you've seen the new one already.

To be fair, I liked this movie way more than Cinderella. Just the musical numbers and the stellar voice acting was one of the highlights of the film. Sir Ian McKellen and Ewan McGregor both steal the show.

Oh and if Josh Gad isn't the worst or annoying part of your movie, then you done something right. He's was pretty damn in this. Same thing with Luke Evens as the cartoon villain which fitted nicely in this type of universe.

While I still prefer the idea of the Beast being more practical rather than CGI, but Dan Stevens still gave a solid performance as the character.

Beside the obvious set designs and noticeable autotune, it's visually stunning and had an old fairly tale vibe to it. This is the closest thing we got that almost re-captures the magic of the 1991 film.

I had a lot of fun with this live adaptation. What's not so fun is the next live adaptations lined up. Like, seriously Disney? Well it's gonna make money anyway.

Sure, the handful of new songs don't exactly land as hard as the greatest hits do. And sure, a tad of the original's warmth and endearment may have gotten lost in the shuffle. But, as far as being a live-action remake of one of the greatest animated films of all time is concerned, Bill Condon's "Beauty And The Beast" does what it needs to do. It offers an updated, yet appropriate visual interpretation of the whimsical fairy tale at hand. It references and pays respectful homage to the many iconicisms that made the 1991 original so unforgettable. And, most importantly, it still maintains a level fun and enjoyment that can at least hold an anthropomorphic candle to that of all Disney classics. Indeed, this might actually be Disney's finest live-action remake yet, in my completely subjective opinion. Color me surprised. Expand

But at least is enjoyable and fun. I was almost scared of how could t be when the movie began, because from one song to another, it felt like a Broadway musical, but after the 1st act, it turns (luckily) into the same old Disney musical. When the visual effects started to roll out, it was impressive, but when the Beast (played greatly by Dan Stevens) appeared, some of the moments were fine. With the addition of some never seen-before scenes, it felt like the movie was going to a dark and emotional turn. Everything felt like that, but when we get into the last act, everything was like it came out from a comedy. The performances were all great and, as i expected, Emma Watson shined as Belle and Luke Evans dominated the comedy of this movie alongside Josh Gad,aside from being a total badass. In the end, this live action remake is NOT better than the animated, but it manages to deliver a promising story, some touching moments, great acting and solid visual effects. Expand

The movie covers what you'd expect it to, while explaining the main character's back story. I was under the impression that there had been some backlash due to one of Disney's first gay characters. The implication is there, but it's handled in the perfect way, where many people may miss it altogether unless they are deliberately keeping an eye out for it. Conservative parents parents, no need to worry, the film isn't going to turn your child gay. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Emma Watson does not have the warmth of Belle in her expressions, the added new songs are unnecessary, as well as certain scenes, such as the enchantress, how the prince became a Beast, how Belle's mother died, etc. Also, Luke Evans is handsome to many, but to me, he's not Gaston; he's not intimidating like the character was in the original. The CGI is pretty awful, Mrs. Potts & Chip look horrible, but Beast looks the worst. He looks like a man who has grown extra hair on his face; & people have compared his horns to those of a goat's. I think they changed his character, because he's not scary as Beast in this live-action version. I'm also not impressed with Emma Watson's yellow dress which is supposed to be Belle's, but looks horrible compared to the original, it does not have a full skirt & has a different design on the top; the sleeves are also nothing like the original. The other costumes were well-made. I don't like Ariana Grande & John Legend's version of "Tale as Old as Time", I feel they should've chosen someone else to sing it. The only good things I can say about it are the costumes (except the yellow dress) & the set design, the scenery was beautiful! But as for everything else, this does absolutely no justice to the original. Expand

There’s no question that the animated version is better than this remake, but sure we all knew that already didn’t we? From her opening song Emma Watson seemed horribly miscast, her voice auto tuned to within an inch of its life was very disappointing, however as the story progressed she did manage to win me over. Her relationship with the Beast felt genuine and there was strong chemistry between Watson and Dan Stevens. Luke Evans was a definite show stealer, perfectly channelling the essence of Gaston and perhaps the best thing in the entire movie. The only character that didn’t seem to live up to the standard was Ewan McGregor and his horrendous attempt at a French accent and if you thought listening to a bad French accent was annoying you should hear him sing with it. Cringe.
But why oh why Disney did you feel the need to add mediocre songs to an otherwise perfect set list? There is one additional song in particular and if you’ve seen the movie then you know what I’m talking about. It was unbelievably out of place and upset the pace of the movie. So unfortunately for me this disrupting the pace of the story happened too often and I was left sitting there thinking the animated version is a far superior movie and the only reason for this remake is the money which is has certainly made in buckets.
We all know the story and what should have been a dramatic and emotional last act was simply bland. There was no emotion so although I did enjoy a lot of this movie it’s just not as good as it should have been. For all the diehard Disney fans there’s no recommendation because no doubt you’ve already seen this but for everyone else maybe watch the animated version instead.

Well, on the one hand I like the fact that it’s a nice re-creation of the original film, which I enjoyed. The downside is that that is also its biggest weakness. It doesn’t really feel like a new film, it just feels like a repeat, which would be fine for a stage show, but not an entire movie. Especially considering that Jungle Book and Cinderella did a much better job updating their stories. I get a sense that Beauty and the Beast has not been around long enough to really warrant an update since the original one still holds up, there are not that many issues with it and it narratively is still as relevant now as it was upon its release in the 1990’s and it’s so evident here, every moment you are seeing something that is in the original film, you are getting a sense that it was done much better there and it really makes you feel that the minor changes and additions feel like they detract from the film more than they add. Again, it’s not to say it’s bad. The actors do a decent job, the effects are pretty good and the set design is fantastic, I expect to be seeing this film nominated in several of the technical categories at next year’s Oscars. However, to me, it just feels rather ‘been there, done that, and it was much better the first time’. I don’t hate this movie, in fact, I kind of like it on a few levels and I wouldn’t object to seeing it again as I suspect this is probably going to become a mainstay of British TV at Christmas. However, I can’t fully recommend Beauty and the Best, especially if you enjoyed the first film. It’s worth it for curiosity and you will get a good film for the price value, but you are not getting a great film Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An EXCELLENT adaptation of the mixture of original story, Disney animated feature, and stage musical. The effectiveness in the live-action retelling occurs when many of the "plot holes" and issues are addressed. Where is Belle's mother? What happened exactly with the Enchantress? Whey doesn't ANYONE ever wander ove rto the castle? All of these (and more) are addressed intelligently and thoughtfully. The story never feels forced or rushed and the songs are woven seamlessly into the story. The newer songs don't add as much as those from the stage version, but it's understandable why the newer mater is in the film. They are shorter and really move the narrative along. The performances by Dan Stevens (Beast) and Emma Watson (Belle). Their natural chemistry and connection really effectively display the growing attraction and the CHOICE Belle is making to stay and help. Their work together was incredible. Putting in twice the performances to fully form this amazing character paid off. You can tell that this is a real man acting within the beastly confines. Stevens creates a wonderful character (on par with many of the master Andy Sirkus). The Beast has depth and feeling and the effect is ohly enhances by Ms. Watson's nuanced performance. She gives a smart, relateable, and sensitive performance as Belle. THIS is the girl I want my daughter to emulate. The household objects were all lovingly voiced by some of the best actors in Hollywood. Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Ian McKellan (Cogsworth), Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts), Stanley Tucci (Cadenza), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Plumette), Audra McDonald (Mdm. Garderobe) and newcomer Nathan Mack. At moments the objects felt a little stagnant and I think that it was just lost in translation a little, but the vocal work was exceptional. This is a movie for fans and it does not disappoint. Come and enjoy this wonderful feast! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apologetically lavish and over the top. This is a movie that is meant to enchant and entertain. The meticulously designed rococo castle is stunning, and the cast of furniture is truly magical while remaining realistic. This movie doesn't try to be something it's not, it's highs are very high and it does achieve some real emotional depth (the windmill, and the frantic sadness of the furniture at the end when they temporarily die). I've been so sick of the dark remakes and this stays true to the tone of the original while delivering true doses of honest joy. Alan Menken is amazing of course and all the music is exquisitely arranged and produced. The only downside for me was the heavy autotone which from time-to-time took me out the enchanted and magical world this movie so easily puts me in. Expand

My opinions of the cast are very mixed, I was quite surprised by ewan mcgreggor but let down by luke evans. The beast doesn't translate perfectly into live action, but dan stevens work really helped make this a more believable creature. I didn't believe emma watson was anything but an acting performance, there was very little truth in her and i thought this was the flattest part of the film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was somewhat excited to see this movie only to be disappointed as soon as i heard Emma Watson was cast as belle. I don't think in all honesty she can act whatsoever, i feel like her performance as Belle was just basically Emma renamed for the production, as in Harry Potter she was very suited to the role however i felt that character also was not acting it was simply herself but a snotty know it all. Emma certainly brought no joy or passion to the movie, emotions none existent, song very flat the best part was Gaston and Le Fou but even Luke Evans wasn't that great, he was somewhat okay but there was not enough ego for Gaston. Scenes, Added and none existent; a slave to all original Disney movies the fact that songs, scenes were added whilst other scenes from the original were missed leaves it very poor. Gaston doesn't ask Le fou to strike up the band for her proposal, it simply doesn't happen. The opening scene was unnecessary Lumiere looked like a cheap Monopoly piece, not like the cute one from the cartoon that looks like hers wearing a turtle neck, the furniture ect... weren't as cute looking like the original i might expect too much but the CGI for the beast was exactly that, too much! Added songs killed my soul i got bored quickly the back story for belle wasn't that needed. I felt like an original story was changed as if it was from a different perspective like Malificient but that film was great! That was the same story with a slight twist not something changed and over sold. I am really gutted this film turned out the way it has. Lets hope they don't flatten anything else we have like they did with Bad and the boring. Expand

Very well made with great music and fitting actors. I didn't like some minor choices in the end of the movies and the end is a bit to cheesy but that doesn't stop the movie for being great and remaining a classic for new generations.

I loved it!! Ever since I saw the first commercial, I couldn't wait to see it. I knew I would like it regardless but it was better than I thought it was going to be! I want to go see it in the theater again. Good stuff - go see it!

The original Beauty and the Beast animated movie is one of my all time favorites, so I had some trepidation about the live-action remake. But, as my rating shows, I was pleased and impressed by the new effort.

Emma Watson is the only actress that I could have accepted as the bookish, plucky Belle since it is who Watson really is, and who she played so many years as Hermione, and she did a creditable job. All of the other roles are also well cast The movie adds additional elements to the story, and its telling, that overall work very well. The timeline is clarified; the relationship of the town to the castle, the haunted forest, and the magic spell are also knitted together better. LeFou has become his own character, with his own comic moments, and real friendship with Gaston, who depends on LeFou to stabilize him at times. This is the single largest addition to the story and is entirely successful. The movie is also updated a bit for present day sensibilities in showing that a fair part of Gaston's male posse have man-crushes (LeFou), or latent feelings of which they are unaware (two of this other followers), all of which I liked.

There is a new song for the beast when he lets Belle go, which I thought was very good, and really needed by the story. I will miss it in the future when viewing the original animated movie (the Ebert site disses the new song, I think the reviewer is all washed up).

Another minor difference: the "bookshop" in the town has comically few books - which actually makes sense for the town as it is, and enhances the contrast of Belle's encounter with the Beast's vast library.

The "battle" scene in the castle involving the townspeople, where they are routed by the enchanted inhabitants played well - it makes perfect sense that the ordinary folk with get spooked by their magicked opponents and cut and run, leaving only the aggressive conceited Gaston to carry on the attack.

Any criticisms? Some.

Watson does get a little lost in castle scenes, they let them overwhelm the actress's presence. The run-time is a little long, and could have been tightened up a bit. The animation of Mrs. Potts was a little creepy. And I really missed the lovely, magical, narrated stained-glass introduction of the original.

Was a live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast necessary? Of course not. Is it better than the original? Again, no (that would be impossible). But I am glad that they did a creditable job.

Do not get me wrong, I never thought it would be bad. But, I was never comparing it to some childhood classic that filled me with nostalgia every time I thought of watching the film. Instead, I saw this film in a vacuum. Unfortunately, it is still a mixed bag. At times, you can feel that fairy tale magic that is promised. Other moments provide sensory overload or are complete filler and wholly unnecessary. The end result is a potion that both enchants and befuddles in near equal measure.

From its very first frame, Beauty and the Beast shows its tedious footing between grating and magical. Its opening sequence of the Beast/Prince Charming (Dan Stevens) getting cursed by an enchantress has both incredible special effects and preposterous make-up. It is well applied, but it seems too exuberant and practically flamboyant with how much make-up the Prince is wearing to his party. That said, the scene still imbues the sense of mystery and magic necessary for the film and its immediate follow-up, the performance of the song "Belle", really hits the mark. Emma Watson's singing is lovely as Belle as she goes through her small French village and the various villagers express their reservations about Belle and her quirky bookworm behavior. It is a real charmer and is a song that gets the proceedings off to a terrific musical beginning, quickly displaying why this film's music is beloved by so many.

Unfortunately, the film then takes some poor turns. In its performance of "Gaston", a loud and incredibly well-choreographed musical number mostly performed by LeFou (Josh Gad), Gaston's (Luke Evans) closest companion, the film hits a real sour note. The song is simply too much. Compared to the more restrained staging of "Belle", "Gaston" is over-the-top and further maligned by an awful joke about the spelling of his name and LeFou's illiteracy. At this point, I was wondering if it was a mistake and the film would not be nearly as good as hoped. These fears were realized when we reach the Prince's castle. While the banter between Lumiere (Ewan McGregor) and Cogsworth (Ian McKellen) was immediately appealing, the arrival at the castle is marked by a few bad moments. One, when Belle is shown her room and the camera does a whip pan. Early in the film, during the performance of "Belle", I noticed some quick camera movements that immediately bothered my eyes. However, I had ignored them because I figured that I was simply a bit tired. Sadly, this eye shattering whip only served to make my strained eyes scream out in anguish. My eyes were not treated kindly in the follow-up to this either with the performance of "Be Our Guest". While the song is fine, the glowing sensory overload that ensues on the dinner table is just far too much. It had bright lights and excitement to try and attract kids to the joy on screen, but it felt far too hollow and bombastic to actually work in any effective way.

Fortunately, the film picks up considerably at this point as it begins to focus on the romance between the Beast and Belle. This is a romance that would charm warmth in the coldest and blackest of hearts. Via songs such as "Something There", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Evermore", the film strikes a heart warmingly romantic tone that rewards viewers with the magic of a fairy tale, terrific songs, and an awe-inducing romance. Together, Watson and Stevens have terrific chemistry in these forms and work incredibly well with one another. Small moments of them simply walking into a library or over a bridge are moving, poetic, and achingly romantic. The film has so much heart, it nearly swells and boils over. Now, these sequences do have their flaws. Though the visual effects of the film are impeccable, especially with Belle's dress - a real highlight of these live-action remakes have been the dresses, as the realization of Cinderella's ball gown with the accompanying visual effects is still stunning to me - and the beast is also incredibly well-realized. That said, there are still issues with the effects. On the bridge, while romantic, it is clear it is occurring in front of a green screen. There are other moments scattered throughout that are unfortunately stricken by shaky visual effects. Fortunately, the whole romance of them falling in love is so well-written and realized, it is hard to deny the film's magic. Accented by charming turns by Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson as some of the Beast's cursed helpers, the film strikes a good balance between the more romantic elements and the comedic elements.

The result is more than the predictable journeyman telling that so hindered 'Cinderella' a couple of years ago. Bill Condon moves the tale along at some pace despite a rather long running time. The musical numbers are extremely well staged especially 'Be my Guest' and 'Gaston' and camera work is imaginative. Luke Evans is a revelation here as 'Gaston' and his charismatic turn more than compensates for the shortcomings of Emma Watson's Rather listless Belle. She fails to impress either musically or dramatically. However, the film is so surprisingly entertaining and breathtakingly beautiful to look at that even her limitations can't derail the overall impact. The score is lovely, although the new songs are not up to the standard of the original ones, and production values -Design, costumes, visual effects, make-up and sound are all on the money. The ending is a bit too cutesy, but the (controversial? get over it!) gay sidekick adds some welcome humour and is an inspired touch. Expand

There is also far more animation in this "live action" than in the original cartoon but in the same time, both the cast and director managed to loose the lifelikeness of the original production (that is a pretty neat trick in itself). The film is at its best when it creates the amazing musical numbers of the original, both visually and musically, especially the new music additions, especially the tune Evermore that brilliantly provides Dan Steven's Beast his own sorrowful tune. The film is only hindered by the dragging out certain musical numbers and elements, mostly just to provide the film an acceptable run time. And of course the original will always hold a charm that will always put it a notch above its live action counterpart. As its own interpretation, however, each character is casted perfectly, especially Josh Gad as LeFou, while bringing the beauty of the original to life in amazing special effects, and dazzling musical numbers. Beauty and the Beast should easily take place as one of the best family films of the year. Expand

Whether speaking through an animated object or being seen on screen, even if very briefly, it is always a joy to hear/see Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Audra McDonald, Emma Thompson and the glorious Gugu MBatha-Raw along with Nathan Mack as Chip the teacup. (Be sure to stay for ending credits.)

Emma Watson fills the shoes of Belle being the equal of any Disney's princesses and has the voice to match the image while Dan Stevens as the Beast is hidden behind fur and horns most of the movie and has a number near the end that he belts out with assurance. In addition it has Kevin Kline, always welcome in any movie, as Belle's father given more background than previous versions but not a major song to sing. Luke Evans is as narcissistic as any Gaston can be while Josh Gad, as his sidekick, is a delight in the movie.

The original songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman from the 1991 animated film are in the new plus 4 new songs by Menken and Tim Rice. The screenplay by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spilotopoulos has added a lot of background giving the new film a running time of 2 hours and 9 minutes while the original animated 1991 film was 1 hour and 24 minutes. Let's talk about the 'scandal, associated with this film which would take more time to explain then what doesn't take place on the screen. Blink your eyes and you will miss it plus the exact same thing and more has been seen at least 20 times before and how many times have you seen men kiss, by accident in movies, which doesn't happen here! “Much ado about nothing.”

I have seen the animated film twice and the Broadway stage show three times, still as elaborate as this production is I will always fall for the love story and the 'tale as old as time'.

And all things considered, I think it works for the most part as a "remaster" of the animated one. It maintains the core concept, songs and shots, and although that may cause some to just want to see the animated one, to me it captured at least most of the magic while adding some cool bits in general, especiallt trying to close some details that didn't made sense in the animated one (althought ironically adding a couple more) and adding some interestin background to the main an supporting cast. All in all, a great example of a movie done with care and true love for the original animated one. It was never supposed to be better, but for what it is, excellent production design, great music, great voice talent, good acting, and some great shots here and there, it leaves me with a great sense of nostalgia but also enjoyment. Recommended in general and if you like Disney, what are you doing reading this, go and watch it. Expand

As soon as the movie started i got hooked, the songs, the characters, are just magnificent throughout the entire film. And this is how i felt with the live action version of the film. I got hooked right from the beginning of the film. Emma Watson as belle i feel did an amazing job. Belle is a character that you can relate to and i think Emma Watson did a great job portraying that aspect. A lot of people are saying that this film is too much like the original. I totally agree that it follows the same story line and main ideas, but as Chris stuckmannn would say, " if it isn't broke dont fix it". so overall I loved watching this film and would definitely recommend it! It must take their (arguably) most popular animated film and transition it for modern audiences. With a cast consisting of mostly inanimate objects and a minotaur-like brute, director Bill Condon had a difficult task ahead of him. Thankfully, he was more than up for the challenge. Beauty and the Beast, for the most part, is a success despite some major flaws in its leads. A selfish prince, Dan Stevens, is doomed to live as a hideous beast, unless he finds true love. In walks Belle, Emma Watson, as the prince’s cursed staff makes a last-ditch effort for the prince to free them of their enchantment and find true happiness. I never believed in the relationship between Belle and the Beast. They didn’t have any chemistry until the final act of the film and it felt rushed. Watson and Stevens were serviceable in the leading roles, but unlike the rest of the cast, they felt replaceable. For most of movie, neither are given much to do. Watson seemed present in her scenes and that’s about it. She never felt charming or had any depth to her. Stevens was never intimidating as the Beast, and I didn’t have as much sympathy for him as I should have. Fortunately, the rest of the ensemble cast more than makes up for the lacking leads. Luke Evans and Josh Gad are perfectly cast. Evans shines as the incredibly narcissistic yet immensely likeable Gaston, while Gad’s take on the quirky and bumbling LeFou has the funniest moments of the film. The performance of “Gaston” was easily the best part of the movie. The nefarious duo steal each scene they’re in and I left the movie wishing they had more screen time. A lineup of all-time greats, including Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci, make up the enchanted staff. Each actor and actress gives a larger than life performance and they all work great, with Ewan McGregor being the standout with his excellent rendition of “Be Our Guest”. The musical numbers drew me in and never felt out of place. Iconic songs such as “Beauty and the Beast” were done with admiration and were satisfying to see onscreen. Director Condon utilizes epic set designs and sweeping shots of beautiful landscapes to make Beauty and the Beast feel like a fairy tale come to real life. The tone is light-hearted, but dark when it needs to be. I would be laughing at a joke from LeFou in one scene, and feel deep sorrow for the cursed inhabitants of the castle in the next. It is a delicate balance that gives the film its emotional depth. The visual effects of the film are, for the most part, decent if not passable. However, the Beast looks near realistic in some scenes, but cartoonish in many others. It can be distracting when it appears Emma Watson is acting against something that isn’t as real as her. Despite some key character flaws and minor inconsistencies, I found Beauty and the Beast to be Disney’s best live-action remake yet. I was invested in the enchanted staff’s desperate attempt to make Belle fall for the Beast, and I had great time watching Gaston’s smug endeavors to woo Belle. The fun-spirited tone and energetic performances of the supporting cast left me feeling cheerful as I exited the theater. Disney keeps setting the bar higher and higher with its remakes, and they keep delivering. Expand

'Beauty and the Beast' (1991) is without a doubt, as close to a perfect Disney animated film as you could get... so perfect that it became the first animated feature to be nominated for the "Best Picture" Academy Award. Not to mention that with 'Cinderella' (2015) and 'The Jungle Book' (2016) turning out to be surprisingly good, there were more reasons to get excited. Now I'm not sure if it was my expectations that did this to me, but I found Disney's live-action, and arguably more modern, take on this "Tale as old as time" to be mostly okay! I'm not going to waste my time summarizing the plot as I'm sure everybody should have seen the original film by now, so I'm just going to explain what I liked and what didn't work out so well for me. What I liked was the choice of actors and their roles; Emma Watson, best known for playing the bookworm and intelligent Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" franchise, fits the role of Belle since these two characters are not that different, so it seems. Her singing, admittedly, does sound auto-tuned - especially when she hits the high notes - but it's not bad. She did her best, and that's admirable. Dan Stevens ('Downton Abbey') plays the Beast very well too, with enough anger and arrogance to make him almost no different to his animated counterpart. Luke Evans and Josh Gad share terrific chemistry as Gaston and LeFou, and Gad's version of the "Gaston" song sounds eerily similar to the original version from 1991... clearly Gad thrives in playing Disney sidekicks (many of you may remember him as Olaf the snowman in 'Frozen'). Ewan McGregor ('Trainspotting' and 'Star Wars') surprised me as Lumiere, a role I didn't think he would play well, but, his version of "Be Our Guest" is something I wouldn't mind listening to again. He shares funny chemistry with Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, not to mention Emma Thompson is fantastic as Mrs. Potts, and her version of the enchanting "Beauty and the Beast" number is also something worth downloading. The production design of this film cannot be faulted as well, much like 'Cinderella' (2015) two years ago, it's very lavish and great to look at. Now for the not-so-good things. The movie spends a lot of time trying to be too much like its animated counterpart, shot-by-shot some scenes look similar, the dialogue is also very much the same, yet the execution of these lines don't sound as natural as they should have. If just the musical numbers, the lyrics, remained similar to the original, that's fine... but 80% of the dialogue in this movie, maybe more, was just from the original. And they don't have the same beat...

The lead characters, played by Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, two gifted young actors, unfortunately for me, lacked a bit of chemistry. I didn't feel as if there were any spark or emotional intensity like their animated versions. This isn't a problem with their acting, I think it has to do with the script and the editing execution. What I did like was the near ending, the way they executed the last petal falling from the rose, and how the characters react to that I thought was emotionally heavy. I'll give director Bill Condon credit for trying to be as respectful to the original movie as possible, but focus on the like-able characters, don't worry too much about making look aesthetically similar to the original by using the same camera-work. The reasons why 'Cinderella' (2015) and 'The Jungle Book' (2016) worked so well was because they didn't concentrate too much on being similar to the original, they still made it about character, and why these stories were so important. Those remakes were able to stand on their own without the need to watch their original versions. 'Beauty and the Beast' however, it seems wants to be compared to the original, so much so that it tries to be similar in both camera-work and dialogue. But the characters come second nature... This isn't an insulting remake like Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' (2010) or a dull and excruciatingly ludicrous one like 'Maleficent' (2014) (a movie I found difficult to sit through), this is something fans should see. See it for the music, the production design, and just the overall nostalgia. But don't expect a "Best Picture"-level movie... leave that to the original 1991 animated classic.

It may seem as a simple cash grab for fans of the original, but Beauty and the Beast capitalizes on its talented performers and fantastic visuals to deliver a remake that is both fresh and nostalgic.

Boring re-hash of what was an excellent animated film. Also very disappointed in the addition of propaganda that was not in the original film. Many young children will watch this, and they are very impressionable. Shame on you Disney :(

This movie featured a solid cast that delivered a performance which felt so genuine. The plot was exciting and built up a lot of tension. The soundtrack was well produced and timed. The visuals were on par with anything else nowadays. On top of all of this, it had the nostalgic characters and props from the the original. If you think the 1991 version was something to rave about, this one should be right there in the discussion. This movie was a MASTERPIECE. Expand

Really liked this film! It's rare that you see people in the theater clap.

A lot of people complain that this is a rehash, and yes, they're right. But, it's a really good rehash. The director and screenwriters were wise enough to stick with the key points of the original film while adding some new stuff that really worked. More background and humanization are given to characters causing the film to come across as a little darker and more mature than the original. The actual romance between Beast and Belle feels so much stronger. It also fixes plot holes and pacing issues from the original. One weak spot is that this film has so many characters that the director has some trouble juggling the more supporting characters.

The film is beautiful. Has a brightly colored, ornate French fairy tale look. The redesigns to the enchanted object characters are really unique. The computer animation is impressive. Cinematography is good, but I do feel that some of the camera angles could have been improved upon. Contains all the original designs. A couple of songs have some slight lyric changes, but I feel that they suited the new context of the film. They did drop the Gaston reprise, due to plot changes. I'm disappointed but understand their reasons. There are 4 new songs in this, which I liked. The song Evermore is especially good. One downside of the new films is that 3 out of four of them are ballads and I kind of wish there were more dynamic differences between songs.

Cast is great. Special credit should be given to Josh Gad, a living imp, and Dan Stevens, who brings so much emotion and nuance to the role.

Rehash or no I recommend it to everyone.

The original was superb, this one is a soulless mess. It throws in some very minor plot tweaks and additions from the original, but otherwise it's hard to deny this is just a cash grab nostalgia play, like an increasingly large percentage of Hollywood's output seems to be. The singing is unimpressive (frankly these actors don't have the voices for it compared to the original renditions) and Belle never really sells you on having fallen for the Beast, she seems like she's only going through the motions. The best I can say about it is that it really helps you fully appreciate just how well done the original was by contrast. Watch that again instead of overpaying for this flash-but-hollow dreck.

PS: Homosexual intimacy doesn't belong in family-friendly films, period. Shame on Disney for trying to hamhandedly crowbar controversial alternative-lifestyle elements like that into a lighthearted movie for children. That's not what anyone goes to a movie like this to see.

the movie is a timely well made, and well acted update of the 1991 animated classic. While it may not reach the same height of the original, it is still a worthy companion.

It was one of the animated instant classics to trigger the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s, defined an entire generation of Disney fans, set off some of the most iconic songs ever to grace the screen, was honored in several lists by the American Film Institute, was preserved in the National Film Registry the second year it was eligible (which is a huge deal), and was the first animated film in history to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

So no pressure or anything in remaking it, right?

Many of us were worried that this remake would just be a line-for-line remake of the original, but thankfully it’s not. Several updates to the story are actually a strong improvement to fill in the problems with the original. The whole village’s memory of the castle is erased by the enchantress, a contrast made much more blaring by a cursed eternal winter in the castle’s borders even while summer goes on in the village.

Belle’s father Maurice also has a more complex subplot that actively engages both Gaston and LeFou, and he is motivated by his collection of homemade paintings and inventions used to memorialize his family legacy. This includes a backstory on Belle’s mother, even if it adds virtually nothing to the plot.

Other minor details are added to motivate Belle further, such as teaching a younger village girl to read, only to be condemned by others in the village. The parents will also enjoy this little detail: Gaston is a former war hero, which gives his musical number a whole new flavor. They also would find this new take on the Beast somewhat compelling: he doesn’t even try to treat Belle decently as she first comes into the castle. He just keeps her in the prison, only to be moved into an appropriate bedroom without his consent or knowledge.

There are plenty of other small plot holes from the original that are explained here, as the characters make it blatantly clear. What I mean is, it is done like this: one character asks a question we all asked about the original, then another character simply answers the question. Then the plot moves on as if nothing happened. So no high-class writing to be found here.

Although when taking the whole sum of the product into consideration, the elements that remain the same compared to the original fall way, way short. The director of this live action adaptation, Bill Condon, who directed Dreamgirls and wrote the screenplay for Chicago, would presumably know all about how to do a musical properly. Although his skill is screaming to get out this time around, as nothing commands our sorrow for his reimagining of the beloved characters. With the exception of “Be Our Guest,” none of the musical numbers or recreated scenes match the energy or creativity of its animated counterpart. I’m not just referring to the fact that most to everyone’s singing voices are hard on the ears, but mainly to the fact that everything is rushed, especially the scene in the West Wing.

If you think that you would feel charmed and nostalgic while watching this, sorry—not happening. Maybe it works as a plot expansion of a previously established story, but as a standalone you couldn’t help but see the flaws. Belle even looks at the Beast more like she’s scowling than like she’s captivated by him. Then with Gaston, he doesn’t feel like a jerk at all, as in his first meeting with Belle, he doesn’t chuck her book into the mud- but actually hands her flowers! Flowers! From the guy we’re supposed to hate! It’s little details like this that will halt any true joy or tears. But what else would you expect when a remake is produced by a studio that cares more about social correctness than casting actual French actors for a film set in France?

Speaking of which, you may all be wondering at this point, “what about the exclusively gay moment with LeFou? Should I worry about it harming my kids?” Well, I can tell you this: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s a two second moment at the very end that is just as subtle as it is super easy to toss onto the cutting room floor. In fact, Josh Gad puts in just the right dose of humor and charm in his interpretation of LeFou, and he actually can sing pretty darn well! So you’ll end up loving his character by the end, whether or not you agree with the homosexual lifestyle.

Although if you ask me, this remake was never needed to be made. Yes, it did satisfy many of the problems that people have complained about for twenty-five years about the beloved animated classic, but it’s not like this predictable fantasy is doing anything new or risky. If anything, it’s just going to remind us of how much more moving and charming the original is, and we can sleep easy at night now knowing that some plot holes were filled without the animated film having to explain it for us.

Nota: 8,3
