Not as bad as critics are saying, also not as good as the fanboys are saying.
When this film is good it is great. Say what you will about Snyder, he knows how to pull off an awesome action sequence. Visually the film looks great and (while some people seem to dislike this) I think the dark tone is good too.
DC are trying to distinguish themselves from the Marvel films and I think going for a more mature vibe is a smart way to do it.
The performances are solid but my favourite has to be Jeremy Irons. He isn't in it long but I love his portrayal of a tired and cynical Alfred.
Also I the sound track is just great! I especially like Wonder Womans theme.
All that said, this film has problems. Lots of them.
Like I say, I like that they're going for a more grown up ton but there are moments when it gets a little heavier than it needs to be. There are three superheroes in this film and they all seem to hate being a superhero, I don't think it would hurt for one of them to at least seem like they like what they do.
There are a lot of easter eggs and set ups for future films, some of which are done better than others (the justice league cameos are really lazily done). I really enjoyed looking out for the nods and winks but there are so many of them in this film and so heavily emphasized that I think it would be quite alienating to a casual viewer who wasn't that farmiliar with the comics.
Henry Cavill is a good Superman but we knew that already. The new heroes (Affleck and Gadot) are what I'm a bit conflicted about.People say 'Wonder Woman stole the show' but collectively she's only in it for like 8 minutes. It's a good 8 minutes, she doesn't get anything wrong but it's still just 8 minutes, hardly enough to steal a show.
Whether or not you'll like Batman depends on what interperatation if the character is your favourite. Personally I like Batman when he has his no killing rule so I'm not a massive fan of this one. Not to say Affleck does a bad job, he certainly doesn't but in this film Batman kills without hesitation or remorse.
Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor... I don't know where to stand. He gives it his all but I'm not keen on awkward nerdy Luthor.
Also the editing in the first hour or so of the film is kind of clunky and the final fight at the end feels kind of tacked on like they just needed a last minute excuse to get the three heores in one place. I mean Doomsday (aside from looking like a generic CGI monster taken from WETA digitals stock library) just doesn't feel necessary here.
So all in all it's good but far from perfect. If you're on the fence about going to see it then I would definitely urge you to go.

Only the last hour of the movie is any good. I didn't even like the opening credits, they were so blah! And the music with a couple of exceptions is also underwhelming.

What a mess! Some good CGI action but a poor story and an even poorer script. One of those movies that just shouldn't have been made. Glad I didn't see this mess in a theatre, it was hard enough to watch through it all on TV.

Unfortunately, the writing is kind of all over the place and there's way too many flaws with the writing. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not a tremendous film either. It could've been way better, but it could've been way worse. I'd still recommend checking out "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" if you're feeling curious. Expand

The first act was okay the second meh and the ending was great. So its kinda mixed imo. Affleck as batman killed it. Cavill was fine. But I think the movie suffered from the narrative being lost in the action. Not balanced well at all.

I liked Affleck's version of Batman, Henry Cavil did a deent Superman, Jessie Eyesenberg as Lex Luthor was actually a guilty pleasure entertainment, the story did somethings right and the visuals, action and Wonder Woman were fantastic.

Not Great, but not alwful either. 6.5/10

I need to establish this right now: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is NOT a bad movie.
Becoming one of the most controversial movies very quickly, Batman V Superman does a lot of things well, and a lot of things wrong. Luckily I have more pros and cons, but the cons are still there, so let's talk about the good parts first. Ben Affleck NAILED it as Bruce Wayne, Henry Cavill was an.. alright Superman, and Gal Gadot was a great Wonder Woman. I did feel like the movie was less fun, but it made it all the more AWESOME to watch. The dark and bruting Superman screwing with the mind of Bruce Wayne was interesting to see, and the rivalry between the two was entertaining to watch. However, let's get into the cons. Jessie Eisenberg as Lex Luthor was a very poor choice, as the actor was very stupid and unentertaining rather than hysterical and insane. Plus, the first hour of the movie was a lot of unneeded exposition, but I didn't mind the rest. However, Doomsday looked absolutely terrible, and is easily the worst part of this movie. Overall, Batman V Superman isn't a bad movie, but it isn't a fantastic movie either. If you ever watch this movie, don't go into this movie with high expectations; if you do, you won't like this movie. I personally thought it was alright.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice gets a 6/10.

On one hand, I was satisfied with the film, but on the other, I felt like this film was released to early. Even still, I was hopeful for BvS. After the disaster that was Star Wars Episode 7, I needed a movie to get me excited for something again. Unfortunately, BvS was a film of extreme ups and downs. The film absolutely excels in its action and visuals, and both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck fit very well in the roles of DC's two biggest characters. But the film is also overstuffed, unfocused, and lacks proper build-up. For me, DC's desire to compete with Marvel is costing them dearly, especially since Captain America: Civil War came out this year as well, which is without a doubt, one of Marvel's best films. They need to take their time to build a proper universe, instead of trying to fit numerous unrelated stories into each of the movies. So for me, I'm still recommending for people to check it out, just be sure to keep your expectations in check. Expand

The movie has a welcomed serious tone and a depth that is intriguing, but it twists itself around ruining the characters. Overall I really enjoyed parts, but it makes me want to know what was reshot and what they changed on the cutting room floor. I loved one theme of the story; the theme of Superman being an idol/god to many people, and the danger that may cause. Batman distrusted this unequal balance of power of a god Superman, and it seemed like a true motivation to oppose Superman. This would have been a perfect setup for a Bizarro Superman to trick the masses, and become a real false god who abuses his power. But instead the movie relied on unreasonable misunderstandings between Batman and Superman that ruined any good logic of the characters.

The movie made Batman emotionally blind and sadistic, and the way he treats Superman is moronic. The movie basically created a big misunderstanding that goes on most of the movie, so that Batman wants to sadistically murder Superman. His detective skills and reasoning are gone from this movie. A few scenes are enjoyable like when Batman is purely badass to the bad guys. Batman is only a "good" guy because we like Batman, but if he were dressed in a different custom then his actions would make him the villain. Superman is mute and moronic. The US government is condemning of Superman and distrusts his powers, all because of a big misunderstanding, yet Superman has no voice. Everything about Superman's thought process is slow, and frustrating to watch. Doesn't Superman talk ever to explain? (Yeah I know he shows up at Congress well into the movie). doesn't Lois Lane even write articles to explain her first hand knowledge of Superman? Does Superman land far away from Batman so he can moronically walk into Batman's trap, and meekly tell Batman about the misunderstandings orchestrated by Lex Luther? The movie tried to make Lex Luther be the glue to connect everything together. He invites Batman, Clark Kent, and Wonder Woman to the same party. He has files on the other mutants. He has access to all science and money, bails out the guy in the wheelchair, and gains access to Zod's ship. He has his finger in EVERYTHING and pulls the strings to trick EVERYONE. It was too much, and not a satisfying plot connection. Also he shows up everywhere as the plot needs to force him to connect, which was only topped by Lois Lane being everywhere as the plot needs.

The movie relied on both main characters, Batman and Superman to be stupid and not empathetic to each other, which hurt the film. They resolve their differences immediately in the movie, with a stupid connection, and they forget the whole hate for each other. The film makers forced the team to come together for the end scene. They did fine with including Wonder Woman, in fact I felt proud when they were all working together. But it was lame how they pasted in the other mutant characters like Cyborg, Aquaman, Flash, by using top secret camera footage that was like posed commercials.

I enjoyed the foreshadowing scene of Batman's dream in the desert, of evil superman, flying bug guys, someone in a portal warning Batman. Did they intend to have Superman evil at some point? We shall see if this is all meant for later movies, but it shows how unfocused this film is.

Final annoyance, Why does Doomsday's roar sound EXACTLY THE SAME as every big monster IN EVERY MOVIE??

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman vs Superman started off with a boring recap of what most people already knew... that batmans parents were murdered. Also another flaw at the start of the movie is that there were civilians standing around not panicking when several buildings were collapsing. The final major flaw was the situation didn't make much sense, i mean batman and superman have saved many lives and they are looked at as enemies? Kinda strange. The overall fight scenes were pretty great. Finally the idea seemed destined to be a fail but they managed to make it enjoyable. Worth checking it out in theater. Expand

Batman walks around a desert and kills people all while wearing his batsuit and then the scene gets cancelled out by who i'm assuming is the flash coming back in time and waking him up? but what is that suit, thats not a flash suit?
Suddenly batman cares if superman dies because superman's mum has the same name as his or is it because he cares that his mum will die, thats just another reason you should kill superman because we just found out he will go on a rampage and kill everyone if his misses dies so ofc he is going to do the same when his mum dies

Generally good performances, particularly liked Affleck's interpretation of Wayne/Batman. However, too many characters were underused and there are too many fleeting references that not everyone will get. Overall, it felt like the film was trying to cram too much in despite the 150 minute running time and the story and flow of the movie suffered as a result. There are some good ideas in the script, but the execution is just so muddy with some immensely questionable decisions in the script and in the filmmaking. Underneath all of the CGI and cinematic bravado that Zack Snyder layered on us, there is a great story about the misuse of power. A little too long and slow, and a few minor plot flaws spoil this otherwise fine addition to the DC universe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this movie. I wanted this movie to be the best superhero movie. But this movie falls incredibly sort from my hopes for it. However I do not hate it like others. First of all, Ben Affleck is outstanding as Batman in this movie. Everything from the costume to the performance was spot on. Although a few of his actions are not explained which leads to some confusion with the overall character. Also, Wonder Woman is great when she appears in the movie at different points. I must point out that it is hard to judge Gal Gadots performance as she is in the movie very briefly. For me Wonder Woman saves the climax of this movie, which was otherwise unnecessary. The third member of the Holy Trinity, Superman, is horribly under-utilised and the great character he developed in Man of Steel is completely tarnished. It feels as though Supermans arc in this film is pushed aside to make room for the ridiculously out of place end fight which the trailers already spoiled. And Lois Lane is useless in this film. They tried to give her a story of her own, which just ends with no actual payoff. It literally changes nothing in the overall plot of the movie. Again, Lois is another character from Man of Steel that is tarnished by the story telling in this movie. Jesse Eisenburg gives it his all which I respect him for. Despite this, the way Lex Luthor is portrayed is not what I hoped for. He's an unhinged, twitchy child in this film and not the intelligent business man in the comics. He's Joker 2.0. I will say though if he was doing this exact performance in another movie and without the name Lex Luthor I feel as though he would have recieved great praise. He's just not the Lex we wanted. The plot is messy, but not incomprehensible, though when you piece it together the only storyline/motivation that is remotely believable is Batmans. The others are strange and Supermans takes a sudden, unexpected change. His motivations completely flip from wanting to fight Batman because he hates him, to fighting him reluctantly because Lex forces him to. I will say the action and cinematography in this film is pure perfection. Sack Snyder is a visionary, but his story is messy and the editing is jarring. You can really see little pieces of a great movie in Batman v Superman but strange editing, convoluted storylines, a bloated runtime, weird character choices really drag this movie down. Expand

I also enjoyed Ben Affleck's Batman; feeling much more like the muscled hidden-in-plain-sight playboy billionnaire of the graphic novels. And yet, the movie still failed because of an awful script, all the create the contrivance that is why Batman would fight Superman. Logically this makes no sense whatsoever, and for this to work it needed a much more nuanced plot than we ended up getting. Batman disliking him because his attempts to save the world as well as his presence ended up killing innocent lives isn't good enough, not on its own. The worst thing is it could have acted as an exploration of Batman's character. This would make sense if it was actually Batman running away from the fact his own actions cause exactly the same problems... His own existence causes other psychopaths to murder and steal in Gotham city. Batman v Superman should have been about the fact he was actually fighting the things he was running away from in himself, projecting them onto Superman.

Marvel's Universe was just as guilty in their Civil War film. Superheroes fighting each other makes no sense, not unless the fight is ideological (which usually stems from whether it is acceptable to kill or not), but neither Universe wants to taint their biggest franchises. To me, the difference is at least Civil War provided an enjoyable movie that kept my suspension of disbelief well enough to not detract from the experience. The same, sadly, can't be said for Batman V Superman.

TL;DR at the bottom for those with little time to spare :)

Batman V Superman isn't nearly as bad as the critics made it out to be. Sure it's a disappointment, but not what I'd call bad. The story tries to cram in too much yes, and the villains are a little pathetic, but where all else fails, Batman shines. Ben Affleck's Batman fits in well with the darker tones of the movie, and that warehouse fight scene resembles much of the critically acclaimed Arkham series. The fight between Batman and Superman, whilst short, is still entertaining and miles better than the lacklustre fight that was Master Chief V Locke. Wonder Woman also shines as one of the best features of the movie.

However, Lex Luthor is just plain weird, Doomsday resembles more of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle crossed with a cave troll and Superman is pretty dull for the most part and the story is just a mess.

The score is fantastic as one could expect from Junkie XL. The cinematography is stunning and the costume design really captures all of the characters their equipment (I adore the Bat-mobile's design).

TL;DR
Batman and Wonder Woman shine.
Superman is boring
The cinematography and action is stellar
The score is stunning
Prop and costume design is wonderful
Story is a mess
Villains disappoint
Warehouse scene is one of the best superhero action scenes in a movie

Final Score: 6/10

There isn't a seemingly repetitive formulaic feel as in other films as we've seen before in the same universe, and this, although still having world-class action scenes, has a lot more story and character development in it making for an extremely entertaining film. Moreover the acting was brilliant and also having world class performances from the likes of Jesse Eisenberg. A must watch for action fans, a must watch for slightly more engaging films and of course for any fans of the marvel dc universes. Expand

He had no place in this movie. If I were to summon up all of my complaints for this movie, it would be that the whole movie feels like a build up for a sequel, which meant I was never invested. This seems to be the new trend in superhero movies, and it's stupid. Most of the cameos for the flash and some of the other superheros were very poorly written. Overall, Batman v Superman was very disappointing, but still not an awful movie. Expand

DCEU is falling hard and WB only hired Zack Snyder because of how well he did in the box offices and not getting expensive directors to do the DCEU right. When I see a Marvel movie, I'm expecting a bad movie to come up. With DCEU, I'm expecting a good movie to show up. Even though DCEU is falling apart, I still enjoyed this movie. I like it, but not as much as Marvel and The Dark Knight Trilogy and the X-Men franchise and DCEU need to step it up or get rebooted which might be a good idea and hired great movie directors and writers and someone who gets it right. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (ULTIMATE EDITION) So here's what I love about this film: I do believe that Ben Affleck plays the best comic book version of the Batman. Whenever he delivers his lines I simply believe that he is this character and he also looks the part more than any other actor who portrayed this character. I love the tone and overall I think the movie is visually stunning for the most part. I like that key characters initially have clear motivations and are fleshed out. Score is phenomenal too and fight scenes are worth re-watching. I DON'T LIKE how this movie tries too achieve more than it should - introducing members of the justice league (through short videos sent via e-mail, like... What?) Making Lex Luthor the main villain when it could have easily been just Batman vs Superman. No need to have a mastermind pulling the strings. Just have two forces be pitted against each other. Also, Eisenberg's performance is annoying. I don't even care that it's not accurate to the comics, it's just annoying. Doesn't strike me as a villain who should be feared. Looks like a spoiled brat that could just get slapped and would cry somewhere in a corner. Anyway, Martha scene... I get what they were trying to achieve but it was just too sudden, so it just cracks me up every time I see it. They needed some other way to show superman's humanity to Batman. Then killing off superman in his second movie was a mistake. Way too soon and Wayne with Diana talking at the end like they knew Kent for centuries. That was dumb. Batman's nightmare should have been cut out. So out of place (or after credits scene maybe?) Not going to even talk much about Doomsday. Just.. (sigh). I'm still hopeful for DC. I'm a fan. Expand

They gave the title of the movie to a 5-minute fight. While watching the movie, I wished he was the Joker and killed them both by hitting each other. It's one of the few movies I've ever been bored with. When it comes to his subject, Batman, who thinks he is the provider of justice on earth, sticks his nose in Metropolis and Superman is the setting for it. Over time, they hate each other more and more. Then they trump cards in a fight cage organized by business Lex Luthor. Do not think that one of the two will stay. Totally false. It's not versus, or it could be Lex Luthor vs Superman, Batman, Diana.

There is no sex or nudity in the movie. If you have that much patience, it can be watched as a family. But I think it's a complete disappointment.

That only line from the movie describes perfectly the relation between the public and this movie. Is not nearly as bad as how much people say, but not a masterpiece like how some DC fans say. Is not a bad movie, but is neither an excellent movie. It has a lot of flaws in it's structure. There are scenes that are horribly executed like the "Martha" thing. If you see it in a technnical way, you'll see a very disorganized mess of a movie, if you see it like just a story, you'll get an interesting story about the clash of the two greatest superheroes of all time in a philosophical background. That's when my second problem with this movie comes, the third act. The payoff to all this plotlines that have been builded up to the end of the movie just end in a dumb blockbuster way. Like the conflict between Superman and Batman, that ends with a CGI monster destroying all of the internal conflict.

6.5/10 movie - Acceptable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman v superman is bad, both as an independent movie and an adaptation of the DC characters' stories. As most Zack Snyder movies are it is visually incredible, with great score and amazing costume design.

Storywise it is boring, overstuffed and undercooked all at the same time, it yet again misunderstands the appeal of Superman and makes him overly dark. It presents an older batman who's been through all the stories we've come to expect from batman, yet still feels the need to show us the death of his parents yet again. It mixes too many comic book stories into a much worse adaptation, and it expects us to take superman's death seriously after 2 movies into the cinematic universe.
Its a smart dumb movie, a movie that thinks it's smarter than it actually is, but that treats it's viewers like children that need to be handled through the whole experience.

It does however have one of the most entertaining villains in recent memory, he is very smart and feels like he's constantly 5 steps ahead of our protagonist leaving only slight clues and nods, unfortunately it's Lex Luther not the Riddler

Its better than man of Steel but is still not good

The story of the movie felt was not that bad, batman and superman both felt threatened against one another made a lot of sense, and the lex Luthor arc could have been better made tbh. THe one MAJOR issue the movie had was - pacing. The movie was prolonged. For the 2/3rds of the film, it was just dull, it took a lot of time for something interesting to happen. Tbh the story could have been a build-up from multiple movies instead of just a new film. The fight between B and S was short but good however the final fight scene was amazing and so was the cinematography I have to give that to the team it was just amazingly made. But other then than those 2 it was just a boring film. Lot of potentials was just wasted... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's set Martha's iconic scene aside for a second, though a note needs to be made nonetheless. Snyder's intention wasn't for Batman to spare Superman because of a coincidence about their mothers' names, but he spares him because for the first time he goes beyond the alien, he sees the Clark Kent as a person. Without this nice little speech, however, the scene is still largely illogical. There were like seven moments before that scene where Batman and Superman, instead of playing who had the biggest cock, could just confront each other and talk. 10 for the idea, 5 for the realization. The rest of the film is a mess. DC tried to keep up with Marvel by literally throwing everything into this film, shooting a sequence of scenes that the public, especially the general public, cannot understand! And also by entering a number of heroes, many of them with a time counted with a dropper on the screen, without there being a real underlying meaning behind this wicked idea. To make cinematic universes takes time and, above all, if you pillory a 2 and a half hour film, make sure it has a few moments of levity, because it's damned too heavy and it reaches the end that you're literally desperate. Not so much for what happens, because what happens happens a little by chance, a little for the needs of the plot. How much because you are mentally tested. Expand

Batman v Superman for me is a complex movie but there is some enjoyment to be had in this movie.

First off the performances,Ben Affleck as Batman was a very good choice,he was just entertaining to watch. Affleck was also equally entertaining as Bruce Wayne as you get to understand why he hates Superman and what he is willing to do take him down. Wonder Woman was one of the best parts in this movie she doesn't have a big role but she just fits into the movie and i wish she could have been in the movie more as Gal Gadot does a good job at portraying Wonder Woman. Now Superman, i think Henry Cavill did the best he could do because Superman is in and out of this movie. At first the world is still struggling on whether Superman is a good guy or not and you get to see Superman struggle to get people on his side, but as the movie goes on the plot of him against the world dies down as the matter of Superman doesn't come to a conclusion.

For a movie called Batman v Superman, the focus on the fight is really focused on Batman's side as he goes on a brutal rampage to take Superman down but Superman himself isn't interested in fighting batman sure there are some signs that he is not a fan of Batman but Superman's side of the story is vague until the actual fight happens.Speaking of the fight, the build up to the fight is too quick and vague, though there is some tension, when the actual fight comes along it just happens with no real build up.The fight was entertaining but rather short, but when Doomsday comes into the picture the action is amped with Batman,Superman and Wonder Woman fight Doomsday and that fight is more entertaining than the Batman v Superman fight which is slightly disappointing for a movie called Batman v Superman.

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor was a mixed bag for me, if your a fan of Jesse Eisenbrg then you won't be disappointed but for me Jesse as Lex Luthor was too wacky for me, he turned out to be menacing as the movie ends but he didn't have a real motive in this movie, he influences the Batman and Superman fight in some way but doesn't actually have a real agenda and his wackiness sometimes takes you out of the movie a bit.

I didn't really mind the tone of this movie it was dark and that's the way it should have been.Critics say there is no or little humor but not every superhero movie is a Marvel Movie that's what they fail to understand. There are a few chuckles in the movie and thats fine with me and Zack Synder does a good job at delivering some dramatic moments with the dark tone of the movie.

Now my biggest problem with Batman v Superman is that during the movie there are these totally unnecessary scenes, like Justice league set up the title 'Dawn Of Justice' suggested that the movie was going to touch on some justice league stuff and one one hand the introduction of the justice league was cool as you get to see other characters that could be involved in the justice league including Wonder Women, but there are some scenes that are confusing as hell and that have nothing to to with the movie like a certain dream sequence that confused me and took me out of the movie as it is never explained and you remain scratching your head on what just happened,Especially and the very end.

The action is good and entertaining especially the Batman and Wonder Woman action sequences. The Batman action sequences are brutal and fun with is unlike any other thing batman has done on screen and Wonder Woman's powers were equally entertaining. The romance between Superman and Lois lane is super vague, their relationship is never really explored and developed and when they showed deep feelings for each other you just didn't buy it.

So Batman v superman is just a mixed bag, somethings i enjoyed but some things were bad, this film could have done a lot better but there are is some fun to be had in this movie if you keep your expectations low.

This film surprised me in a few ways, Bat-Fleck was cool and he had very advanced technology. The shots were beautiful and the score is amazing-Hans Zimmer kills it.

The bad- Lois is still obnoxious and always in places she doesn't belong. Wonder Woman is a strong point of interest and has like 5 whole minutes of screen time. This movie revolves around the past instead of Superman and Batman going back forth. The scene where the flash comes back from the future is very confusing to any non-comic fan. Lex is sort of atrocious, any actor would have looked more like Lex anyway. Then the entire justice league is introduced to the DC cinematic universe in brief videos that Batman finds on a file that Lex had. If Lex knew about these guys then what has he been doing?! Doomsday is a cool villain and I love that he kills Superman, but the audience will not feel satisfied because the conflict is between Batman and Superman. Shoving Doomsday in the plot feels cheap.

I personally feel Man of Steel is a better film-and that is also far from perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does what it says on the box. It's a shows the whole Justice League before the movie that's set to release in 2017. The movies does have areas where it excels, but as whole, considering this is a movie that has two of some of the biggest fictional characters in history, not exceptional. I am speaking as a fan of both Marvel and DC, and wanting both the MCU and the DCEU to succeed. This review will mostly be spoiler free, but I will label the areas that have a spoiler with a "SPOILER ALERT". I have seen this movie twice, so I can get a better judgement on the film.

Pros:
- Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons and Gal Gadot (as brief as she is in this movie) do amazingly well portraying Batman/Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth and Wonder Woman/Diana Prince respectively. They do their characters justice (pun intended?)
- The fight scenes. The fight between Batman and Superman and the warehouse scene especially. Brilliant choreography with Batman.
- Bruce Wayne's perspective on the events in Man of Steel. It kind of humanizes those events. Makes them feel more grounded.

Cons:
- Too many different stories. You have a Batman story, a Superman story, a Batman and Superman story, a bit of a Justice League origin story. And story telling does feel a little messy (SPOILER ALERT especially with the dream sequences).
- Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. In the comics Lex Luthor is a person so charismatic and charming while also extremely manipulative, methodical and intelligent, all of these traits which lead him to become President. Even if WB isn't going down the same route, I don't see this Lex Luthor becoming President. Not to mention his plan is a little convoluted.
- The reason for the conflict between the two heroes. The reason why Batman and Superman end up fighting could of been solved if they just talked it out. (SPOILER ALERT! Lex kidnaps Superman's mother and threatens to kill her unless Superman kills Batman).
- Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, while great, feels a little shoehorned in the movie.
- Henry Cavill's Superman. I get that it's a more dark and gritty Superman, but he doesn't feel inspirational, and he hardly cracks a smile when he is Superman. I'm not expecting Christopher Reeve's level of smiles and happiness, but for example when there's a montage of him saving people, he doesn't smile or give reassurance once. I don't think this is Cavill's problem, probably more the script or the direction. Not to mention that he seems a little brutal. For example, in the beginning of the movie, Lois is taken hostage by a terrorist, Superman confronts him and then end ups tackling him through 2 walls.

In conclusion, I find that Batman v Superman wasn't great, it was mediocre which is disappointing. This is all JUST MY OPINION, but I'd say to just wait until it's on SBO or something.

For starters - you can follow The Movie Spot on Twitter (@themoviespot_) and Facebook for more stuff. Here's our review:

Folks, I can’t say I’ve ever been so torn on a movie before. I usually come out of a movie feeling one way or another about it, and it’s very rare that get both feelings of that it was good and bad. But, here I am, the morning after seeing it and I’m absolutely torn on where I stand. And because of that, truthfully, this cannot be seen as a win for this movie or DC. I wanted this movie to win me over, but when I left the theater last night, I left with mixed emotions, and after reading through several reviews this morning from all other media outlets, I’m not alone. Right now on Metacritic, the critic score is 44 (out of 100), while the audience score is at 73. That’s a big gap. For comparison, both Avenger movies hover around the high 60s, low 70s for both critic and audiences, so universally people enjoyed those films, but here, there is a clear divide and I can’t decide where I stand.

I sat through the first half of the movie, which is 2 1/2 hours long, and felt it was a chess match. Pieces were being moved towards an end game, but it was just so slow that it was hard to believe I was watching a movie called Batman v. Superman. They started with the origins of Batman, for the 500th time, that just felt unnecessary. At this point, there is a Batman movie/show for every generation that could have seen this movie, to go through the origins again is just tedious. And out of all they skipped in Batmans story, showing the origin again just seemed like a bad decision. They let the audiences infer on everything Batman went through in Gotham as the vigilante, but showed us the one thing everyone knows. It’s clear that this Batman has seen a thing or two. He’s lost Robin, he mentioned The Joker, he mentioned that he’s seen many other “bad people”. He also seems like he’s OK with killing now, and has me thinking of the past villains and where they are. Are they dead? We saw how easy it was for Batman to kill in this movie, so did he rid Gotham of the notorious villains, or are they alive? People were very quick to praise Ben Affleck as the “Best Batman ever”. I really liked his performance, he played it with the grit and seasoning needed for an aged Batman, but he hasn’t even gotten his own movie yet. Though, we got more than enough of him here, I still want to see Affleck perform in his own standalone Batman movie before putting him on that pedestal.

The “other guy” in the title, was featured heavily throughout the movie. In the trailers, Superman seemed like the antagonist of this movie, but as the movie went on, I couldn’t help but feel for him. His home is destroyed, he’s sent to Earth as a way to save his life, and all he’s done since, or try to do, is keep it safe. And he’s even tried to stay low key by keeping his job at The Daily Planet, move into an apartment with Lois Lane, and we don’t see him actively trying to do anything within the world, unless Lois is in trouble. It seems like Henry Cavill is headed towards being the best Superman in movie history as I assume he’ll be playing it for the next 5 years through this phase of DC movies, and that’s great news because he just fits everything that makes Superman, Superman. Let’s just hope we can get him in a definitively good movie during his time.

DC has done a poor job getting people to really want to see The Justice League. The comparisons to Marvel are inevitable, and I have to do it here. Marvel established, legitimately, 4 main characters and 3 side characters before getting to The Avengers. DC is going into Justice League with a rebooted Batman, a pretty good Superman, a pretty good Wonder Woman (whose movie comes out before Justice League next year) and 3 other main characters who we won’t know much about. I don’t think I’m asking for too much here. Marvel has been so calculated in their steps, and giving the fans small teasers of the future while establishing what they have. DC has done the exact opposite. How could any fan get behind that?

Go see the movie, on pure spectacle alone, it must be seen. You may even enjoy this movie, if you lower your expectations. But I have to say, DC missed another opportunity to show the world that they can hang in the comic book cinematic universe.

The best parts of this film was all the action. Fighting, explosions, monsters! Yes! You will be entertained to watch that stuff happen.

But the rest of the movie doesn't make sense. Too many times, you're left wondering what just happened or why someone on screen is doing something. Sure, all the self-avowed comic book nerds will scream "Move Past It!"; but after awhile it get tedious to not have anything make sense. You really can't look past all that and then give the movie a good review.

The tone of this movie works for Batman; but IMHO this is not what Superman deserves; and coupled with the nonsensical plot; this is not what any of the big three (Bats, Supes, WW) deserve.

So yeah, a 5. You can see glimpses of something great in this film, but there's ultimately too much going on with little connective plot. The action is done well; but the reason for the action is kind of left out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hint: Watch the trailers and u got all the film and u can avoid 2.34 hrs, its ALL in there, literally.
Review: "for true comic fans" ive readed, not quite, to watch and somewhat understand the whole film u must have knowledge of Dark Knight Returns, Death of Superman, Flashpoint and ofc Man of Steel, so its not made for fans, u NEED to be a fan... nevertheless the film is very flawed there, with lots of creative ideas but never landed quite well. Eisenberg's Luthor is the perfect example. Affleck as batman is very descent (except he broke the "only rule" several times) but as Wayne is the worst: unsympathetic, dull, bitter, ever-angry, no quite clever (since WW outwit him and cant find a whole ship), or intelligent (since basically was manipulated by Luthor). The plot is forced to try to motivate the unnecessary and unmotivated fight that end up lasting 4-6 minutes with a very lame ending, making me believe that the fight was just cause its the film's name. Doomsday origin is believable but the need of kickstart DCU they wasted such great character. Wonder Woman was GREAT, Gal Gadot was the best of the film, too bad she had too little screen time. The film definitely didnt deliver the expectations and the hype but cant blame the actors, only direction.

Before I start rambling I must state that I have never read any DC comics or a fanboy of Marvel, however both I grew up with super man and batman animation and both heroes are a significant part of my childhood. (sigh...)

Here I go, as a superhero movie I think this movie is good. I love the action scenes, and props to Zack Snyder for some of the best imagery from the recent spew of superhero movies. While I first cringed at Affleck being Batman, I think he is a better Bruce Wayne than Bale in the Dark Knight. While it pains me to say, as a movie lover, Batman Vs Superman failed as a normal movie due to its bizarre story telling.

While superheros movies these days make a big deal of bait the audience of the next sequel, by setting up future characters in their movies, what Batman Vs Superman did was just confusing. Flashbacks, dream sequences, time traveling characters, and barrage of endless confusing exposition. Not to mentions the gaping plots holes, personally is it very difficult for me to get invested in the movie. The flimsy motives of our Heroes' fight as well as Joker Jr. ( Opps, I meant Lex Luther Jr.) weird logic for hating Superman is so odd. If I want to be knitpick-y I would go over my character limit. BUT the point is, while there are definitely great moments, I'm reminded by the many many things that were wrong with this movie.

I understand that DC comic fans may hold this movie dear to their heart, but this film despite awesome moment is very flawed. If I don't google the weird dream sequences and time traveling parts, this movie would have made way less sense. While fans may claim superheroes movies are made for them, the majority of said movie watcher are not comic book fans. While it is difficult for a movie to be good, it is not difficult for a movie to make sense to the public. While I would not watch this movie again, I do not hate this movie. I'm just disappointed.

I'll get right to the point with this movie as I've been eagerly waiting for its release for almost 3 whole years.

It's a decent superhero movie, but it's still a mile away from a genuine breakthrough. Dawn of Justice is undeniably dark and thrilling at some points, with some eye-popping visuals and a bit of mystery scattered here and there. However, it is also pretty much unfocused on a narrative aspect, with uneven character development and a pacing that's out of control as its villains. People said this film is too dark which is not to everyone's taste, but that's not the actual case. Being dark is not an excuse for being humorless. Even the slightest part of humor found in this movie feels satirical and awkward.
Take a look at Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. The trilogy is very bleak as well, but it has a far more structured story, fascinating characters ( which often came with a thought-provoking backstory ) and some humor that balances it. Not to mention the philosophy behind the movies are so rich and relatable that it's still hotly debated even until this day.
Dawn of Justice certainly dwells on the philosophical elements, but most of the time it's only hinted and briefly brought up, instead of providing any take on morality that would have pondered in a viewer's mind long after they watched it. Also, Snyder's vision of Superman, while still refreshing, is totally out of character and worse, derivative of the brutal Batman in some ways ( there's even an article that writes about this issue). Conversely, Ben Affleck's raged Batman stands out as the movie's real strength.

In short, Dawn of Justice is an ambitious effort from Zack Snyder that aims to be both a golden breakthrough of superhero films and a gritty, thought-provoking crime thriller that takes on social issues. However, at the end of the day, we're still left with the ultimate truth - justice is far from dawning, yet.

In my opinion there is too much destruction in this movie, which was one of the major problems I had with Man of Steel as well. Also the dialog including Batman was too flat for my taste.
One of the major points I have to criticize is the frequent appearance of references to comic books (flashbacks for example). Those might be fun for people that are really involved in the universe but I find them generally (and that might be due to my lack of knowledge) confusing and in this movie in particular annoying as well.

They showed me that the world only makes sense when you force it to". This phrase encapsulates Batman's worldview and is very similar to the psychology of Niccolo Machiavelli. This is essentially what our culture has become. In this postmodern world, it is encouraged to view life through a selfish lens rather then lens from our creator and Savior. This worldview is consistently thrown into movies, music, and art as a way to lead us astray from what the Word of God says which is the only truth. As a Bible believing Christian and follower of God, I view life as a created being of God who was made to honor him here on Earth. God makes it clear in scripture how he sees the world and how we should live in it. In the book of Genesis, God makes this declaration. “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (NIV). The human body is after God’s image only as being the means whereby man gains dominion over the Earth. God first saw us as the rulers of his perfect creation. After the fall, our purpose was regained through Jesus Christ. He declares in Matthew 16:24-26, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Christ is calling us as humans to follow him and live a life that honors and glorifies him rather than ourselves which is polar opposite of what Batman is preaching. Jesus Christ intended our lives and our Christian walk to be in direct correlation to the life he lived rather than what we think we make life to be. Expand

The movie leaves you with more questions about what happened in the movie itself, rather than the future movies it intends to set up. Also I didn't think it was possible to overstuff a 2.5 hour movie, and I really hope the 3 hour cut is more bearable.
I definitely recommend watching it if you haven't already to form your own opinion, it's worth that at least.
Fingers crossed this was simply a learning lesson moving forward.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. BvS is not a terrible movie, but come close to it. The only good side is the visuals, that are really beautiful (in most of the film, not in the entire film). But all the rest (The assassin personality of Batman, the interpretation of Lex Luthor, the fragility of Lois Lane, the 'Matha' problem, the bad CGI in Doomsday scenes, the absense of motivation for them to fight, the absense of motivation for them to STOP the fight, etc, etc, etc...) are very bad. Almost terrible. And the worst part, for me, is the intepratation of Henry Cavil. The jugedment scene could be epic. But after the explosion and everybody dead, Superman's face is like "Oh... Ok... What a pitty...". No more words... Expand

Batman v Superman lack of a batman's movie before doesn't give a good motivation for the batman to kill people, the "DeusEx" action in Luthor's plan was pretty awful, the lack of speech of Superman, and the waist of Apocalypse in this movie (could be used in further movies). Gal Gadot does an excellent job as Wonder Woman, which harm's the movie because she still some scenes from the major characters. Even with all this, Affleck does a pretty good job as Batman the problem's with him was the script in some speeches. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its not an epic movie if you don't have a real and understandable situation. It's not an action movie if theres only 10 minutes of figth and they get united for a stupid reason. Its not an "adult movie" with drama if the characters are bland and they dont present any emotion at all. And, to finish, its nit a superhero movie if the villain doesnt have a real motivation, if theres a lot of future references that makes the movie even more slower and if Batman and Superman are constantly killing people and they dont act like Batman and Superman. Because Superman is the ligth of hope and he always wants the best for the people and Batman is a darker superhero but always tries to do his best to keep the people safe, but instead we have a Batman 2.0 and a serial killer with a costume.
Just because it said so, doesnt mean that is shown on the movie.
I really had a lot of expectations on this movie, but its a mess, trying to have its cinematic universe and to be a competition to Marvel.
Sorry DC, but you are to late. My only hope is on Suicide Squad and if it is another stupid movie like this one, i will say goodbye to the DCCU.

But anyway, I was really looking forward to this film. The original trailer promised a god-like Superman coming to blows with a mecha-Batman in a clash of ideologies, which was kind of ironic, now I think about it, since they both believe the other has too much power and freedom to operate as they choose. The subsequent trailers then pretty much laid out the entire plot for the film, which you'd kind of guessed anyway, ruining any hope of the surprise you knew you wouldn't realistically get.

Problems with this film then:

Lex Luthor? I wasn't really that bothered. Jesse Eisenberg plays him as a bit of a classical, self-chatty, madman, rather than the cool, calculating Lex we are used to. He's still the master-manipulator though. Changing Lex was always going to divide opinion.

Ben Affleck? I liked him as Batman. The original fears about him being fat and broody (sad Batman meme? Hilarious!) were unfounded. I can report that he is no more Broody than Nolan's Batman and considerably more hench. I liked the Batfleck fine.

The showdown! I was really into the BvS build-up and even the fight. Pretty cool stuff. The problem is the ridiculous CGI overload that comes after. I'm pretty sure that was when my girlfriend would've walked out of the cinema and driven home - if I hadn't wisely kept the car keys.

The insanely blatant in-movie marketing campaign for the next batch of DC movies. Yes, we are seeing a DC movie and may wish to see other DC movies, but actually warping the plot to fit these adverts? Making us watch mini-trailers in-film? My girlfriend, who had enjoyed the Nolan Batman films but has no idea about other superhero characters was completely perplexed by all the snippets of Aquaman and Psyborg Guy etc. TOO MUCH and TOO IN YOUR FACE. DC: please watch Captain America: Civil War to see it done more gracefully.

Batman kills people. I'm not a massive Batman fan. I think he's ridiculous - wait! hear me out! Batman's main weapon is fear, so imagine I'm a Gotham criminal. Why the hell would I be scared of getting caught by Batman, which is unlikely and at worst will result in my broken bones and imprisonment, when Gotham PD are a much more likely threat and may well shoot me dead??? You cannot have a supposedly dark, scary anti-hero that definitely won't kill you. Nonsense. Sorry, I digressed: my point was that even though I'm not a fan and not bothered, I know that it would be sacrilege for many, many fans to have Batman killing and so should Zack Snyder.

To summarise: good looking, tense and entertaining up to and including the BvS fight (if you ignore the ads), turn off after that.

For all the backlash from his casting, Ben Affleck was absolutely superb as Batman, maybe the closest we'll get to the true dark nightmare that is Batman from the comics. Gal Gadot was also brilliant as Wonder Woman, even though her time in the movie is pretty short; and Hans Zimmer's score was, as you'd expected, fantastic.

But for these great things there are so many things wrong with it. The plot is a muddled mess, confusing and out of pace. Whether it's the final editing or the overall script I do not know. Jesse Eisenberg was absolutely the wrong person to play Lex Luthor. Too over-the-top and over reliant on stupid coincidences, left from Man of Steel and more introduced in this movie. An emotionless Superman carries over from Man of Steel, and his character development deviates in the wrong direction. The teasers for the upcoming Justice League movie felt out of place and just pointless in relation to the plot.

This movie really should've been one of the movies of the year. Instead I was left speculative about the future of the DCEU. For the comic book fan, this movie will be great. But for anyone else, be prepared to be disappointed.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has so much to love, but so much more to hate.
It has great ideas and stories, every puzzle piece is there, this massive project had all of the recourses and manpower to make it work. But i just doesnt because what makes a movie great is a good director and screenwriter, and Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has neither. The director Zack Snyder is a decent director, but he simply cannot tell a story, and handle characters properly. Then, the screenwriter. David S Goyer is a very solid screenwriter, he wrote the Nolan Batman Trilogy, which are all fantastic movies. But the screenplay of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is just so bad, it has a convoluted plot that is all over the place and too many characters whose motivations are mostly contrived and infuriatingly inconsistent. (Captain America Civil War however has even more characters, but that screenplay feels so natural and well fleshed out. Something Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice does not.) Another problem i had with the screenplay is literally after almost every scene, i had the feeling i missed something in the previous one, the scenes just did not fit together properly. This may be the screenwriter's fault, or the Editors fault. Who knows. The shoehorning in of characters that are planned to come, was so blatant and awful. If they had just showed a quick frame of a picture, it would've been good. But here they pay attention to it so fiercly with a shot holding on to that one single line up picture for about 10 seconds. Then there is usage of camera footage just to enhance the plot and introduce newer character, which is probably the most lazy screenwriting possible.

Now i have the main problems out of the way, let's talk about ''positive'' things.
Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is in my humble opinion, better than Man of Steel. Not a more well-made film, but better in the sense that it's much more interesting (kind of) than Man Of Steel, which was a snooze fest. Another positive thing is: It has batman, and a shirtless ben affleck training montage. What more do you want XD. Gal Gadot was pretty good, however underused and only shows up at the end for 20 minutes. I thought Jesse Eisenberg wasnt that bad. Alot better than i had initially expected, but he still has those awful, almost overacting moments. But for the most part he was good.

All in all, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is by no means a good film, but i do think it is getting bashed a bit a too hard. The 27% it has now is really low. Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has it's moments, it is somewhat interesting and entertaining in some parts, so i will give it 3/5 stars.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is a lesson for any to-be screenwriter, how NOT to write a screenplay.

I think it is also important to note that while I may have a slight preference for Marvel's properties; I still have a fondness for DC's iconic characters. I know enough about the characters that I questioned several things in the film and was disappointed to see some of my worst fears were realized.

I feel that your personal enjoyment of the film as with any other is a subject of your personal biases and experiences. This film is a decidedly darker film which I am not entirely opposed to if it fits the character. In this case I don't think the darker tone is the film's biggest problem. It fits the darker interpretation of Affleck's Batman which is absolutely brutal. This batman is the darkest that I have seen in a while. I will openly admit I had my concerns about Affleck being cast but I am glad to say that he delivers a fantastic performance. I can't wait to see him in a solo Batman film. However that doesn't change how I feel about the characterization of this interpretation of Batman and Superman. Batman in the comics has always had a strong moral code. One that despite wanting to kill the Joker he refuses to cross that line. In this film he straight up kills common thugs. Superman on the other hand has very little dialogue and spends much of the film brooding and glaring.

The other casting choices are all relatively solid. Gal Gadot delivers a great Wonder Woman and like Affleck I can't wait to see the solo Wonder Woman film. Jeremy Irons plays a more active Alfred which is nice to see. Amy Adams reprises her role as Lois Lane which along with Martha Kent adds a human element to the film that balances its darker tones. The exception is Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal as Lex Luthor. Its important to note that this is not the Lex Luthor many may have been expecting as he plays Lex Luthor's son. His performance could best be summed up as erratic. As other reviewers have put it; it feels like Jesse Eisenberg is playing Jesse Eisenberg. His performance is easily one of the film's biggest flaws. I found him to be obnoxious and annoying.

The movie is about two and a half hours long and its pacing issues are compounded by its runtime. The beginning to middle are very heavy on dialogue and exposition. The themes presented are intriguing but are hard to digest given the number of them. Its dream sequences and jump cuts to entirely different scenes undermine the overall narrative. The other problem I feel is that while the action sequences were great; Zack Snyder isn't a great storyteller. There are several plot holes in the film that leave you questioning the logic behind them.

The biggest fear I had going into the film was that it would repeat the same mistake Spiderman 3 made where characters felt crammed in. I was disappointed to have that fear confirmed. There are 5 major storylines presented in the span of this one film. The "Dawn of Justice" was oversold a bit. However I do think that I would have preferred the solo films before the ensemble like Marvel has done. In the end I think BvS is a film that had parts I really liked while it had others that left me scratching my head. DC now has the foundation out of the way to build upon for the Justice League though its a rocky foundation at best.

So from that point of view it failed big time. There were weird scenes in the movie and the connexion between Gotham and Metropolis wasn't all that. It really felt like two separate movies puzzled together. Ben and Henry Weren't bad (not great neither) but they didn't have a chemistry together, sparks weren't flying off the screen like it should have been. Jesse as Luthor was a real pain in the ass. The kind of guy you're not at all scared of and who is way too annoying. If he was my boss I would quit my job or be at home with a burn-out. Jesse tried to play a crazy, dangerous Lex Luthor but failed horribly and created an annoying child Lex Luthor. Expand

- Wonder Woman
- Justice League
- The Flash
- dream sequences

This movie should have been focused completely on the core relationship between Batman and Superman. Why do these guys hate each other? More importantly, why do they want to kill each other so much that they are willing to commit murder in order to do so? This movie's problem is the lack of focus in basic storytelling. This movie shouldn't be an exposition for movies five or maybe even ten years later, it should be a movie; especially since it's the second in a cinematic universe.

I also think that it should have taken away a lot of its focus on Lex Luthor and Lois Lane.

This movie, however, has a lot of awesome visuals, good performances, an amazing score, and some other stuff that I'm too lazy to mention.

This movie was okay.

Also, Ben Affleck is totally NOT the best Batman.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, yes, I am a fan of Marvel. But I am also a fan of DC and superhero films in general. The theatrical version of BvsS was not a bad movie, but it did have a number of problems that could not be ignored. First, the overall tone. I am a fan of darker films like Dredd and Watchmen, though they did not allow the tone to affect the whole movie. Both had interesting characters, great action sequences, and some light humor throughout to sustain the film. BvsS did not meet all this criteria. The darker versions of ALL the characters and the lack of any joy did not project the film in a positive light. The biggest issues, however, follow the overall writing and editing. The story, while wonderful in a number of ways, falls into illogical stupidity the next. I'm very sorry, but the 'both are mothers are Martha, we must be friends' is not justifiable to end such a fight. And the theatrical version is horribly edited throughout. The unlimited version, however is a different question. It inhancestors the film a great deal, but cannot help much of the horrible writing. The film is wonderful in a number of ways. The performances of Eisenberg, Gabot, and Irons are amazing is there own sense, and the rest are varying degrees of good. Snyder, though misguided, did provide a spectical film. Overall, see the unlimited version to appreciate the performances, action, and certain elements of writing. The story and tone, however, are not perfect by any means, and I can only hope Warner has learned from the mistakes in thus film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointing story. It made Batman/Bruce Wayne out to be a brainless individual. In the comics he was never stupid like this potrayal.
Too dark and serious with extremely limited humour (which these type of films need)
I think they realised because Suicide Squad was much better.
Hoping the lesson is also learned for the Wonder Woman and Justice League movies.
My brother is a huge Batman fan (above all other heroes)and he was immensely disappointed that the Batman character was such a **** in this film.

The film is a super-production, an expensive and visually flashy blockbuster with a luxury cast and directed by Zack Snyder, but it doesn't always work well, as we'll see.

The film has many points of value, but the script is surely one of the most serious problems of this production. I appreciated the effort to try to relate to the previous film, but everything else fails badly: in the eagerness to try to justify its two and a half hours, this film gets as complicated as possible, with several subplots that do not receive attention, a barrage of characters and a far-fetched main plot, where a young and troubled Lex Luthor tries to turn Batman and Superman against each other. In fact, I got the idea that the film could be reduced to an hour and a half in length without any harm.

The film has a luxury cast, led by two big names: Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. The execution of both is, however, highly dissonant: on the one hand, Affleck gives us one of the most complete and interesting works of his recent career, with great commitment from the actor and excellent results... on the other hand, Cavill seems to be out of the character, or making a titanic effort to fit in with her, which seems surreal considering how competent and dextrous he seemed to me in the preceding film. Jeremy Irons, who needs no introduction and has more than a handful of proofs in this art, has proven to be impeccable as Alfred, and Jesse Eisenberg steals our attention whenever he appears, in the shoes of an especially manic and psychopathic Lex Luthor. Less exciting is the participation of Amy Adams, who did everything she could, but was put in a corner by a script that doesn't really know how to take advantage of her. We could almost say the same for Gal Gadot, were it not for his stunning appearance closer to the end in the role of Wonder Woman. Laurence Fishburne is good, but I felt there was nothing here that he hadn't already shown in the previous movie.

Technically, the film is a visual spectacle based on an intelligent and deft use of all the CGI and visual effects resources available to Snyder. The cinematography is very good and the filming and camera work works very well. The film has a series of action scenes, with particular emphasis on the entire final sequence, which lasts about half an hour and is a real effects show that will delight lovers of this type of resource. The film also has good costumes and an excellent soundtrack, which is signed by Hans Zimmer.

I find him incredibly charming as Bruce Wayne while also portraying the jaded and the rage-filled Batman perfectly. Gal Gadot is introduced as Wonder Woman in this movie and is honestly still one of the best parts. She is very elegant and mysterious as Diana but then an absolute badass as Wonder Woman. Jeremy Irons is snarky and wise as the beloved Alfred as well. Henry Cavill returns as Superman and Amy Adams returns as Lois Lane with both still doing a great job in their respective roles. There are some other supporting actors new and returning who all do fine jobs as well.

The cinematography by Larry Fong is really good and visually there are still some great shots. Hans Zimmer returns to score but is now collaborating with Junkie XL and it is an absolute phenomenal score. The Batman theme is amazing, the Wonder Woman theme is exciting and the Lex Luthor theme is unsettling. There is more oomph in the score thanks to Junkie XL which makes the action scene feel more thrilling. On that note, the action scenes concerning Batman are exceptional. The Metropolis destruction but from Bruce Wayne perspective is one of the most exciting intros in a superhero movie ever. It also perfectly captures the destruction from a bystander view and also illustrates exactly why Batman hates Superman. The Batmobile chase sequence is also quite a stand-out with how awesome it is. Just seeing the Batmobile destroy everything in its path is fun to watch. The Batman warehouse fight scene is the best to have ever graced the screen. It is choreographed amazingly and shot in such a way that it is easy to see what is going on while still feeling every punch. However, the same can't be said with the Batman vs Superman fight. Rewatching it again makes me see how underwhelming this fight is. The first thing to note that is only one fight between these two characters in a 3-hour movie which already sucks but the fight itself is visually boring. It's choreographed in a way that feels like it is from a slapstick comedy. Superman launches him through some walls, Batman gases him and then punches him in the face for a bit, repeat and that's the fight. Superman acts dumb in the fight and Batman just moves slowly due to the armour which leads to a really silly fight to watch. I think people tear into it a lot but the fight resolution of Martha is still quite silly. I think the idea behind it is fine with Batman realizing Superman's humanity. It's just that the scene doesn't convey this very well and put too much emphasis on the "Martha" name instead of the human aspect. It's also executed very clunkily which leads to an ironically hilarious scene when it shouldn't be. The fight against Doomsday at the end is just a big CGI-fest against some dark grey looking thing at night. It's hideous to look at with its abundant of grey and black colours with overly flashy lights that just makes it seem dull. The story has 4 perspectives with the Batman one being the best. His hatred for Superman is understandable and trying to get the Kryptonite to fight him is the most easily enjoyable parts. On the other hand, Superman's perspective is so boring and forgettable. The people treating him like a hero or a god while some detesting him is fine. It's just he is so mopey in every scene which makes every scene involving him just not fun to watch. There is also a weird part in his arc where he goes into a snow mountain and hallucinates his dad which was just so dumb. The Ultimate edition adds more Clark Kent investigation which adds more to it and shows that he dislikes the brutality of his method and the fear he causes which is more understandable. Lois Lane is also another perspective with her trying to figure out who is producing this mysterious bullet. It's a very pointless perspective and quite a waste of time considering it amounts to something that the audience already knows, Lex Luthor was the one who did it! Lex is also the last perspective with him dealing with senators who obstruct him and him building a monster just because I guess? His perspective is fine for the plot but it's not enjoyable to watch because of the actor.

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is one of the worst casting choices I have ever seen. While every other actor feels grounded and serious, Jesse Eisenburg feels very cartoony and over the top. It's made worst as a majority of his lines are dumb. There are some great lines from Lex but they are poorly executed because of Jesse's terrible performance. His character's motivation is understandable but his whole plan is borderline ridiculous and convoluted. The noted Knightmare sequence just happens midway through the movie without any setup or any reference later. Likewise for the future flash sequence which you think Batman would make a note of later but doesn't. There is also the famous Wonder Woman checks her email sequence that is just so unnecessary.

The visual effects aren't awful, but it's strange to think that a film with a budget of $250 million dollars is not capable of delivering a great visual result. Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams and Ben Affleck do what they can with their charisma to make up for the thankless script. Jesse Eisenberg unfortunately seems to deliver the worst performance of his career, with an exaggerated interpretation of Lex Luthor - something even surprising considering that the actor usually stands out for his restrained style and few gestures. Even the score by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL seems uninspired. Expand

Beautifully shot, it has some great action sequences and some incredible dramatic music, though if you enjoy a movie with an engaging story that isn’t convoluted or interrupted by aimless subplots, this may not be for you. Affleck and Cavill put up some solid performances, shame the characters they were portraying were meh at best (conversely, the antagonist Lex Luthor was pretty great but hindered by Eisenberg’s godawful performance). Would’ve been better if the movie tried to tell us a story of its own rather than cram a bunch of iconic story events from various comic books (TDKR, Death of Superman, etc...) even though it would be better if they were, you know, reserved for the FINALE of the DCEU instead of being rushed in its second film.
