From being called the sequel that nobody wanted, Avatar The Way of Water ends up being one of the year's top earner. It will probably end up north of 2 billion dollars at the end of its run. Visually stunning, and once the story moves to its underwater scenes, sights to behold and a very valid reason to see in 3-D Imax. This along with Top Gun Maverick provides experiences that you cannot get at home. Expand

But the story is so simple, I missed the political level that you had in the first Avatar, also we get to know a whole new world with a very interesting civilization. Avatar 2 is not so new to us. And yes, the movie is too long, the characters not so interesting.

-Characters feel basic and two dimensional -The world of pandora is less magical the second time around This is as fantastical as it is trope filled and yet it was a very entertaining 3+ HR runtime. Hopefully there's a longer cut being released as the plot feels rushed and barebones with fewer dramatic stakes than the first movie. Also....how many times can the kids get lost/in jeopardy??? A marvelous looking, certainly entertaining imperfect film.

A singular cinematic achievement with a beginning, middle, and end. I put my trust in the man to justify going back there, but what he’s given us here is a movie equal to Avatar in all technical departments—the action is huge, varied, uniformly outstanding, the special effects are awesome, even the writing, in the big scenes at least, matches the work done before—only, in the end, much less significant. Besides that, I was really surprisingly amazed by this movie. It takes all the time it needs to show the beauty of the ocean and everything around it. Never seen a high-budget movie do that on this level. There were so many moments that were visually breathtaking and immersive. That was what I was hoping for and the movie really didn't disappoint.
You can clearly see that this movie is well-crafted by people that cared about making a good experience. I was really entertained, had fun, what else do you want ^^.

The first film in the series, "Avatar," was released in 2009 and made use of innovative techniques such as performance capture and 3D technology to bring the film's fictional world and characters to life. The sequels to "Avatar," only being "Avatar: The Way of Water," as of now, continue to push the boundaries of visual effects and immersive storytelling.

In terms of the enjoyment of the film, this is a subjective experience that can vary from person to person. Some viewers may find the "Avatar: The Way of Water" to be visually stunning and engaging, while others may find the change from 48 fps scenes to 24 jarring and out of place. I would have much preferred the entire movie to have been shot in 48 fps as I genuinely enjoyed the 48 fps scenes shot when I viewed the movie in my local Cinemark XD 3D theater. The 3D was stunning and by far the best use of it since my viewing of the original "Avatar" in 2009. The story was great at including as many of the main characters as they could, I just wish some more screen time was given to Jake, Neyteri, and their oldest son, Neteyam. Personally I felt like Jake had some character decisions that did not represent who he became at the end of the original film, which could have been better explained.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Y’all are out of your damned minds. The most intense and beautiful movie experience of my life. The story is deeply moving and profound, it’s incredible BRO! I know it’s cool to hate on Avatar, and if you don’t get it I understand, it’s actually a little highbrow now. The movie is amazing; I’ve seen it twice in 3D and it’s honestly the most jaw-dropping and incredible spectacle I’ve seen with my eyes. I could go on but I don’t feel like it; the people who know already know, the people who don’t are missing out on a CORE MEMORY. It’s funny, I used to think Infinity War/Endgame was the cream of the crop. Those are just silly **** movies, yet people will say they are better. I love them but they’re fools, the lot. This is the most awesome movie I’ve ever seen and I will be seeing it at least once more, thank you very much. I see you James Cameron. I’ll be here for your journey. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avatar 2 is the almost perfect sequel, but lamentably falls a little bit short on things that made the original so great, but at the same time, knows and accomplish to keep most of them, and even some improvements. This movie is full of surprises, which is what makes it so special. Sigourney Weaver as Kiri is phenomenal, all of the Tulkun story, and the perfect shot chase scenes and new characters with their relationships are a few. All of the cast does a great job, but Weaver manages to outpace herself. The actions scenes are out of this world, perfect in every way, James Cameron should win Best Director, because his direction leads the movie into a new level. The children of Jake and Neytiri are highlights, all of them. They nailed their family bond, siblings bonds and each own, especially Lo’ak and Kiri have room to deliver more than the rest, whether is a love story or something else. The emotional impact is huge, everything makes it so big, performances, the direction, all of it just makes you want to cry, or laugh or even feel a little bit emotional. But now, let’s say when it fails. Most of the more boring parts are because Quaritch and Spider, both characters feel out of place, and their journey is very slow, and it’s almost like you have already seen this, instead of focusing on them, they should have let Neytiri be a main character again, and explore more of Ronal’s and a much more interesting villian. The beach and it’s creatures are gorgeous, but to me at least, the forest continues to be more impressive. Neteyam shoud rest in the forest, not in the water, all he wanted was to go home. Eventually, Avatar 2 is an amazing film, and everything I’ve pointed out are things that I don’t hate, just wish to change, but it’s great points are so much more stronger than the weaker parts. I hope we get a better villain for the third. Expand

The run time is a little long. After waiting 13 years for the sequel I'm fine with that.
I guess the biggest mistake I saw was that they spoke English too much of the movie and not enough na'vi. I'll think of it as more a reboot than a sequel though. I expect the next movie will change the pace to a more slick run time. I'd say see it.

Expand

After Aliens 1986 and terminator 1984 , this is the greatest and hardest of Mr Cameron

Pandora is created for the first time in this movie. While before this, it was just a beautiful visual idea. Pandora is created for the first time in this film, not because of Cameron's rough filmmaking style. Rather, it is the emotion that create it. Yes, it is the emotion that make Pandora. After Aliens 1986 and Terminator 1984, this movie is Cameron's hardest and toughest movie. This movie is a great work that a rough filmmaker makes up with emotions. The world of Avatar is readable, not too complicated. But it takes form. Avatar 2's special effects are not just an invention. Rather, it serves the story.. it serves the characters.. it serves the mise en scene. ....
Jake sully and his wife are paid again and aren't the just big stars of a simple romantic standard level of payment.

It seems that here the filmmaker should not refer his story to a film of the first part, but James Cameron explains everything with the focus he has in filmmaking during short impressions.

This movie is much better than the first part because here we are not going to go through a very long and boring introduction about a multi-line story. This movie starts from the first moments.

The dialogues are not on air. In this film, the director has become an expert in the world of his film and remarkably innovatively creates a very good interaction between action and adventure. It can be very difficult to formalize the plot of a traditional story better than this.

I have a nostalgia with the special effects of the first part of this movie (only with its special effects), but that doesn't make me want to prefer the first part. The difficulty of this movie is like aliens. And I have never seen its softness in Cameron's films.

Much of the film was filled with suspense hoping that his family would survive. I can definitely see why someone who has not become attached to the characters would find the movie rather boring, so I’d imagine most 0-5 star reviews are for this reason. Yes, the plot is simple, but still really entertaining. I do agree there are some plot holes (rather significant ones), which is why I give the movie a 9 instead of a 10. The graphics were incredible as expected, but even with worse graphics, this movie would still be a 8/10. Expand

I'm not a fan of 3D, but see it in 3D. You'll be blown away. The story is simple, sure. But simple doesn't mean bad. It tells a great story regardless of if it has been told before. It's still a fantastic story of family and living with the herd. The exploration of Earth's beauty through Pandora is breathtaking. If you ask me, this is like going on the Soarin' ride at Disney for 3 hours and 12 minutes, and add a great story on top of that. Simply a wonderful movie. Expand

Pandora is a magical place where the audience can become emerged in a world full of new and exciting experiences. The cinematography is best-of-the-best and this film includes a story that engages the audience and makes us care for the Na’vi. Best part of the movie: the underwater scenes and the premise. The Avatar films provide a different viewpoint from many other sci-fi and action movies which I appreciate.

Room for improvement: long movie, but also worth it. There were times in the movie where it seemed more about the spectacle than the evolution of the plot. However, I enjoyed the extra time exploring Pandora.

The CGI work was gorgeous and allowed for a beautiful exploration of an alien world. Many of the new characters are intriguing and help the audience see a different perspective than what we have seen previously. The story overall feels a bit too similar which feels disappointing given the amount of time they took to release this film. Some of the choices with the main story and character actions are confusing or goofy. This took me out of the experience as many times throughout the film others would laugh at what should be serious scenes. That being said I looked past most of the few criticisms I have because many of them can be explained or improved with further development of the story. Overall I loved the film and the gorgeous world that James Cameron explores with this film and I am looking forward to the continuation of the series! Expand

I can confidently state that this is the best piece of CGI media ever made. The attention to detail and the elaborate fauna takes the viewer through a once in a lifetime experience. But there is one small flaw, the plot. It is no secret that this new sequel's storyline appears to be boring. It repeats all of the same storybeats that the first movie had in favour of creating one huge parallelism. It reminds everyone of the first movie as a way to set up the stage to the sequels to come. Does Cameron lean to much into repetition, I believe so, but either way the movie overall is an amazing cinematic masterpiece. Expand

If the storyline is too basic, may as well critique the other 90% of new movies. Either stop acting like sheep or assert your faceted opinions consistently.
Overall, must see. I look forward to the next films delving deeper into a more overarching story.
I would rate it a 9/10 because of some minor plot holes, but 7.4 is low, 67 for critics is laughable. The disproportionate group of haters have all congregated here to generate a score that isn't representative of the general population.

Not as good as the original but still worth seeing in theaters in full 3D (as of writing this) for the visual spectacle alone and to escape into the environmentalist primitive utopia of Pandora. That's still fun and unique.

James Cameron is an old man that probably should have made this movie 12 years ago when he had more spark left and the spectacle of Avatar was more fresh. Often directors this past their prime can't really make anything worthwhile. So it's a minor miracle it's still as well done as it is.

It drags on, especially in the middle. It felt, to me, at times it almost wanted to be a streaming television miniseries so they could dwell on the new introduced tribes and environments. But, it had to be a 3D movie so we get a bit of a Frankenstein. It's still so spectacular in the presentation of its fantasy world that the slog is not too distracting. The story is still simple and "iconic" with very obvious themes of good vs evil. But that also still mostly works as the first. The action scenes are pumping and brutal in the final stage of the movie and where it shines as a film experience. The emotional heart tugging moments simple though they are still hit home, at least to me. All in all still worthwhile unless you absolutely HATE 3 hour environmental fests that are clearly overly in love with alien cat indians.

The biggest problem this film faced was the significant time jump between release dates, however, Cameron managed to maneuver around this, creating a captivating story that left plenty of room for further developments. Unlike the first film, this one focused heavily on emotions and familial relationships. It created the bond that so many of us long for when it comes to friends and family, and it made the events of the film a little more harrowing as they established very quickly that nobody is safe. Much like the first film, this one continued the storyline of environmentalism and colonization, effectively putting the audience in a place that has them rooting on the side of the Na’vi – and against their own people.

In order to tell this story in the manner that was intended, Cameron waited until he had the technology available to create an immersive world for his audience. Especially with the use of IMAX and 3D effects, the viewer can feel transported to Pandora for the full length of the film, and will grow to miss this universe when the credits roll and the screen fades to black. The CGI for this film was masterful in every way and it can be difficult to find a cast that possesses the talent to perform with the technology that will assist in building this world. That being said, casting director, Margery Simkin, could not have done a better job. While the entire cast provided wonderful performances, Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) stood out with her emotional performance as not only a warrior, but a mother and wife as well. It was refreshing to see that, although she has different priorities now, she still held on to her values and beliefs in the same manner as the first film.

The only thing that I felt this film lacked was a memorable soundtrack, as it seemed to blend in to the background of the film and was not as noticeable to me. However, this is not always a bad thing. It was still an important aspect in creating the desired atmosphere, and it did not overshadow the incredible action sequences that appeared throughout the entire film.

With perfect pacing on a three-hour story that left me wanting more, it comes as no surprise that this film is quickly approaching the coveted $2 billion box office mark that very few films have seen – one of those being its predecessor, and another being Titanic (1997), all with the same director. Whether you are a fan of the franchise, director, actors, or just mildly interested in the story, I recommend seeing this film in theaters as it is a heartwarming and thought-provoking experience that is sure to make you excited for the third film.

More world building and innovation. The film felt like a piece of a larger puzzle and given that it's feels incomplete I feel like 8 is a fair score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this movie will define cinema for years and years to come. just like we study the works of kubrick and scorsese, film students will come to learn about the level of filmmaking consistenty shown by one James Cameron. simply put, the visuals in this movie were JAW DROPPING. my wife and I left the theater with the same feeling we had during the first avengers movie, one of pure joy. kudos to the people who worked on this movie for making something truly special. took one point off cause I don't like how negatively the military was portrayed.
