Though it may not have the most complex or nuanced story, it makes up for that for having some of the best visual effects that I have ever seen in any film, fantastic acting and motion capture work, and a leading character whose heart not only carries the film but also makes you deeply invested in what happens to her. In an age of identity politics it's refreshing to see a strong female character with a great story and character Arc. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie. I would highly recommended Dolby 3D myself which seeing as I hate 3D as a format should speak volumes. A- Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first heard about the movie I was skeptical at best, I love animated movies so when I heard that this would be a mix of live action and CG for the majority of the movie, I was doubtful. After watching the movie, I have to say that the Alita herself is the star of the movie, she doesn't look too "anime" (aside from her giant eyes), and as a character, her motives and outlooks are believable. The action is done very well, the story is serviceable, and the characters around Alita are written well enough to be believable. Mostly. There are 2 characters that I had an incredibly hard time believing. These 2 would be Hugo (Alita's Crush) and Sheeran (Alita's attempted mother figure). Sheeran has a huge turning point later into the movie where for some reason she turns her motives inside out and now decides that she wants to help Alita rather than hurt her. It would seemingly come out of the blue, as the movie gives no reason for her to care at all about helping Alita, yet we are supposed to believe that Sheeran is willing to give up her goals to save Alita (and Hugo) when she was just plotting to kill or capture Alita just a few scenes prior. The big reason I cannot give this movie any higher than a 7 is Hugo, he has the most 2 dimensional character I've seen in a long time. He is supposed to be Alita's first and only love, yet all he is capable of showing is anger or near monotone babbling, he has no compassion and any time he is trying to care it just fails. All in all the movie has fantastic action, a decent story, and a very strong lead, but 2 of the 3 most important supporting cast just fall short and bring the rest of the experience down with them. Frankly I didn't have a very clear idea of what I would see with the exception of what the trailers showed but despite the lightness of its background story and the one that the film shows, it's also a very entertaining and action-packed film, with an impressive visual effects work. Alita is a monumental achievement for visual effects.

I honestly expected a more empty film and although the story didn't leave me satisfied, its main character has a huge appeal and charisma.
Rosa Salazar may have disappeared in her virtual persona but the Alita she plays has spirit and emotion. And although I hear complaints that she's too reckless and unconscious, I have rarely heard such complaints from male characters in the same situations.

What more can I say? Hardly resolutive, especially with that open ending but Alita: Battle Angel offers two entertaining hours of action and adventure and that was enough considering my initial expectations.

I've already seen it 2 times in the cinema, thinking about 3rd time. It's first time ever when I'm ready to pay for the tickets to see movie again in the cinema and surely will buy Blue ray. Very important thing is that you have to watch it first in IMAX 3D, it makes you feel really engaged in it. As far as I see, many people are really thinking about Alita as manga/anime adaptation. Personally I haven't heard about the comics before the movie, only after. I just saw several trailers and decided to check it out straight in the cinema. I would say that it's pretty big mistake to advertise and portray it mainly as an anime adaptation. Because many people don't really know a lot about anime culture in general and even think that it's weird, etc. In reality this movie is for everyone, you don't need to know anything about original anime story, with fresh mind I think it's even better to get the movie right.

The visual side is done perfectly. Cameron, Landau and Rodriguez team is really on top of that game. I don't really understand why it has been criticized by some critics for the scenario. It's understandable if you're huge original anime fan and got own vision on how it should be done. Otherwise it's just not right to criticize the entertainment movie that way. It's obviously not a movie like a Green Book, which scenario is pretty simple, but very human. Comparing it with Avatar or Ready Player One, I can say that Alita's story is more interesting for me and I won't call it a standard scenario. Surely the main hero Alita is just lovely, not sure why her eyes are an issue for some people, but they look fantastic. Also, she smiles a lot in the movie and that's catching as well. She is naive and idealistic, that's why it's really easy to fell in love with her. Rosa Salazar bravo. General cast is great and everyone is fitting characters really well. Hopefully we'll see all of them in the second and third parts, one movie is simply not enough for Alita's story.

Not sure why is not doing perfect on the domestic market and hope that things will improve. International audience love this movie and it feels like China and Japan are ready to help with earnings. Let's support our Battle Angel and show production team that we want more of it.

Although a CGI fest, but the special effects didn't add much to the story and didn't contributed in the visualization of the world where Alita resides in. You are as confused about this world before, as you are after watching this movie. This is a perfectly good example that extreme use of CGI galore doesn't make a good movie, and even makes it lacking some soul.

The original main theme of the Anime is the childlike innocence relationship between Hugo and Alita. But in this live action movie that relationship was a bit under the radar, and it got replaced by fast paced illogical action sequences. Many people who saw the movie gets the wrong impressions. It didn't capture the essence of the manga. This movie shouldn't be about Alita alone, it's about the people around her.

As for the CGI. I know that Alita is supposed to be a Cyborg, but her emotions on screen are a bit fake. Gestures and smiles were often misplaced. However she is also too much CGI to look like a Cyborg. Maybe it would have worked better to use a human face instead of a CGI generated one. Especially when all other Cyborgs in this movie did use human faces which made it look more natural. And with Alita being the only one CGI generated, it seemed a little bit off...

It doesn't have the gritty and cyberpunk feel of the original anime/manga. The dialogues were plain and not memorable. Character building is not well fleshed out, and that is maybe due to poor casting. The role of Hugo was highly underestimated and needed a bigger caliber young actor to fully display its persona. Hugo was a big part what drives Alita, and Hugos insane obsession with the Sky City Zalem didn't got through in this movie. The movie didnt make you feel anything for the characters, and that was the main thing that made the Anime a success in the first place.

As an adaptation of a Manga, it doesn't wear its philosophy on its sleeve, doesn't plaster its message over every surface. And it uses larger than life characters while still making everything seem down to earth - in a science fiction movie. It just doesn't fit the mold.

It is a beautiful movie, in visuals, plot and emotion, and as a fan of the Manga I thoroughly approve. The only reason I can't give a 10 is that it still feels a little crammed...although Rodriguez did a great job keeping everything clean and simple in a movie chock full of moments. Even then I know where they were coming from. There really isn't anything you could take away without seriously detracting from the story, the worldbuilding or the characters. I get why they whittled down the Makaku arch (which is a pity, but it alone wouldn't fill a movie and would feel too Marvel-like - they honor the missing character by not calling his stand-in big bad non-character Makaku) and so they needed to get somewhere with the movie, maxing out the acceptable runtime and filling it up to the notch - but in a (mostly) good way! Another little issue is that they made some changes that cranked up the heroic aspects of Alita (and, especially, her old self).
The changes to the Manga mostly don't hurt and are usually understandable. Some even showed me that "streamlining" can be a good thing. What they did with the berserker backstory makes a lot of sense and plays up the uncomfortable aspects of the main character.

Talking about eerieness: Not that they needed it (the visuals are gorgeous!), but this is the first movie where the uncanny valley effect was used to help a movie, instead of unintentionally hindering it. Alita's huge eyes make her seem somewhat alien, but endearing, but the other cyborg characters often seem jarring, especially Zapan and one of the cyborgs in the ambush early on, which fits the movie perfectly! After all, it is (among other things) a movie about how technology interacts with people - how we use it to miraculous effect and for petty monstrosities alike. No one could embody that better than Desty Nova, who remains elusive throughout the movie, as well he should. I hope we'll see more of him, and that Edwart Norton will do him justice in a second movie!

The movie is your typical futuristic/ruins movie with a cliched plot, characters and dialogue, but I did find myself engaged and caring, plus, the special effects are undeniably terrific. Directed by Robert Rodriguez ('Sin City'), and a screenplay adapted by James Cameron ('T2' and 'Titanic') it's based on the Japanese manga series by Yukito Kishiro and follows the story of its title character, Alita (Rosa Salazar) who was found abandoned and buried with just her head piece in the scraps, she was found by Dr, Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) who repairs her, and when she awakes, she has no memory of where she came from. Ido tries to help her remember as her brain remains intact and she does get constant flashes from time to time where she appeared to be among warriors. Ido warns Alita that the outside world can be dangerous, and she is also told about a slightly wealthier world located just above (this may remind you of 'Elysium'). Alita meets a kind young man named Hugo (Keean Johnson) who has taken an active interest in Alita and they regularly hang out and have fun in which she takes up a hobby in competing in a sport called "Motorball". Ido feels a great amount of concern for Alita, and warns her about the dangers in the world, as well as her discovering what Ido really does. There is a villain in this movie, Vector (Mahershala Ali) who is a little one-dimensional, just appearing on screen with a blank look on his face and carrying an intimidating presence. To keep it short, I admired this movie, it's not great, the pacing does get a little off somewhere in the middle, and the dialogue (mostly the romantic dialogue) is very cheesy, but I did find myself getting emotionally invested in the father/daughter relationship between Waltz's character and Alita, as well as the amazing action scenes (particularly the Motorball sequences) where state-of-the-art CGI is at the top. Clearly, this is a James Cameron project, if you could see this in either 3D, IMAX, or even 4D, it's an experience worth living. Don't go in for the story too much, but go for the ride. Expand

This movie literally raised the bar for CGI by 1000%. Do not go into this movie expecting source material, this is purely a spectacle of unimaginable amount of hours of pure digital artistry. Alita is the strong female protagonist we've been craving in an action movie for a while now and this is a killer IP to work with. I have already purchased tickets for 2 more showings and plan to see this in IMAX as well. I simply don't understand how anyone didn't like this movie, you must be blind. Alita, you have won over a cult following and it would be mind blowing for investors not to instantly start throwing more money at this franchise. Movies like this are the reason I leave my house to watch one. I wish I could give this movie an 11 because it really was that damn good. Expand

After a few viewings I've come to the realization that Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron and the rest of the cast and crew were able to to weave together a tapestry of a movie with many layers not just within the story itself but within the characters.

From initially thinking it was just a "popcorn movie" I've come to see that many shades of color that they were able to channel into the multiple threads and characters. This is a movie that made myself, friends and family feel legitimately "positive" in a way that is doesn't commonly happen even from the usual type of "feel good" movies. Alita is a very special masterpiece and a very unique one at that. Most readers will already have heard about how fantastic the effects are and I can say without reservation that they are the best that I have seen as of 2019.

I'm not familiar with the source material and can't judge how well its themes have been adapted into a film, but I liked what I saw.

The basic story is nothing new. It's the tale of a rich and powerful minority in a dystopian world oppressing the poor and treating them as little more than garbage, while a hero is trying to make things right. However the actual setting, backstories and hints at what has happened is interesting and unique.

Most of the footage is completely CGI, but it's top notch. The action scenes are awesome, especially the Motorball circuit battles. Alita's face being CGI feels uncanny (particularly her bigger-than-normal eyes) compared with the rest of the characters, but then again she's a robot while others are humans with cyborg bodies.

Most of the main actors perform well in this movie, but the star of the show is Alita actress Rosa Salazar. Cristoph Waltz is perfect for Dyson Ido. Keean Johnson is OK as Hugo. Ed Skrein makes for a nice secondary villain in Zapan. But Grewishka's character is just a mindless brute, so Jackie Earle Haley had little actual work to do. Jennifer Connelly didn't impress me as Dr. Chiren, she was stiff and emotionless.

I understand that in the manga the Hugo and Alita love story is central, however I think the love between a robot and a human is non-believable even in the context of a futuristic sci-fi movie.

Another problem is, the screenwriters tried to stuff as much material from the manga as possible into a 2-hour-long movie, and it shows a bit. They should have explained more about the lore of the Alita world, but saved it for a potential sequel. The movie is still highly enjoyable even by people like me that didn't know anything about the manga.

All in all, Alita: Battle Angel is a great sci-fi action movie. I hope there is a sequel.

Pro:
+ verdammt gute Effekte
+ einige epische Momente
+ gute Schauspieler-Wahl

It is just such an enjoyable and exhilarating film with a plot that actually makes sense,a fascinating world, great characters with understandable motivations.

It takes everything you would expect from the manga and anime but tweaks it and mixes it up into a more streamlined and western story which I prefer in some parts. The only thing I wish they had kept was more of the humour, blood and gore but it's totally understandable why they toned it down.

- good story with well written antagonists and a background story
- story which does not rely on exposition every 5 minutes
- well written romance - good side characters

- want the adaption to be faithful

The problem with the movie is that it takes to much from the source material and crams it into the movie so that the plot is a incoherent mess even tho the world/action/main protagonist are engaging. And on first sight it seems the adaption was faithful to the source material. But it isn´t. Every 10 minutes you will get a fanservice scene, if thats what you want go for it, however if you want the fan service scenes to be strung together so that the story is enjoyable and logical, well i need to dissapoint you. You won´t get it here. The director/propucer didn´t know what to adapt properly and in which order, thus the movie is only enjoyable if you want mindless action and gorgoeus visuals. Things which would have benefited the movie regardless of its story:
- R-Rating
- bleaker and more gritty world design

It's a flawed movie but also one of the best live action adaptation of anime and manga by Hollywood to date.

+ Fantastic CGI. Alita is very real and alive when watched in IMAX 3D.
+ Brilliant fighting choreography that are very anime-ish and have never been seen on the big screen before.
+ Rosa Salazar's impressive delivery as Alita is very endearing especially for manga fans.
+ The most violent and brutal PG13 movie that I have ever seen and the one time use of F-bomb is awesome.

- Some of the script and dialogue are cringy if you're not used to anime and manga.
- Villains are mostly mediocre except Ed Skrein's Zapan and another "hidden boss" that may only fully appear in the sequel.
- There is a romance story that people may find unbelievable.

I gave it 10/10 simply because I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and awe-strucked by its faithfulness to the original manga. Hopefully Hollywood would do more excellent live action adaptation of anime and manga in the future.

The weakness lies with the dialogue, which may have been intentional in order to cater to a younger audience. That said: it doesn't talk down to the younger ones about the harder character moments. I feel the critics were expecting something different, but this isn't the only film of the season where we're seeing that. A little more workshopping on the dialogue and it would have been a 8 or 9 from me. If it doesn't demand a trip to the cinema, any sci-fi or anime fan should give it a look in the wild. Expand

I liked this movie as much as I liked Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, if not more. So I wondered about how certain critics could like one very much but dislike the other.

Firstly, I think Alita just didn't do enough to become more westernized and critics expected that to negatively affect the overall reception. They forget that audiences that watch movies for entertainment can still enjoy a movie despite some pacing issues and cheesy dialogues here and there. Its kinda like that feeling when you introduce someone to your favorite show, and when you are re-watching with them you think "oh this part is kinda slow/cheesy maybe they won't like it and they probably will question my taste etc etc" I'm almost certain that's how some of the critics felt, which led them to giving it a harsh overall review/score despite the fact that they sound like they themselves actually enjoyed it.
Sometimes it is better to be more honest with yourself than trying to be objective with something that is better reviewed subjectively. Let statistics offset your inner "fanboy-ism", because there are guys that genuinely did not enjoy the movie. Secondly, it just takes more effort to get into a new thing compared to indulging in familiarity/nostalgia. "What the hell is Scrapyard, what is Zalem" vs "Okay this is modern New York and this is Spiderman" is just 2 completely different starting points. Personally I embraced the world and character-building, and I did not think there was a significant lull anywhere. It's nice to get into a new world sometimes instead of revisiting the same universe (MCU, Star Wars).

Lastly, I guess it really rubbed some people the wrong way when a movie raises more questions than answers and then finish with "to be continued". Personally I rather have as many movies as possible versus jamming a long story into a 2 hr movie because that's how adaptations often fail.
Think there's also a bit of double standard going on, especially with how Infinity War ended...

So please disregard critics score (and mine too) and give this movie a shot just as a thought exercise on the disconnect between movie critics and actual audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FIRST off... the critics dont know what they are even criticizing. They talk about things as if they didnt know what they were looking at. If your familiar with the source material youll be very happy. If not than expect a very differant movie from anything thats out there.

Saw it and loved it. Initially i was put off by the big eyes, but as I saw the movie it didnt bother me. Alita blended in with the live action very well. And Her facial expressions are what caught my attention and made me care for the character. There is an emotional aspect to Alita that is endearing. You root for her, you feel for both her Victories and losses. FOR THE GENERAL AUDIENCE: Its entertaining, Action is well done, Characters are well written and the CG effects are awesome. You will fall in love with the character. She is indearing. The issue for some, might be the pacing. For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story moves along pretty fast and its hard to get why everything is happening. Alot is going on and you dont know why. First off you wont have an origin story or know about her past or whats up in the floating city or about the main villian. That is because the story is very long and these things are revealed accross multiple books. The movie is all SETUP and CHARACTER DRIVEN. Alita embodies strength and endearing qualities in one. She is deadly but also very human. Her losses and victories shape her character and that is what drives the Narrative of the movie. So dont expect everything to be explained. Again and its very important, those things that were not revealed is what drives the narrative and events of whats to come. Thats why it cant be revealed now. It will mess up how the story is told. The story of Alita is huge. Nova is a Villian that expands many volumes of books. He is a very intricate and complicated villian. The truth about Zalem and its inhabitants, the Truth about Alita, once revealed are catalysts that drive other portions of the story. What your getting here is an introduction to Alita and her world. FOR THE FANS OF THE COMICS/ANIME: This is one of those things that never happen and if they do, they happen once in a life time. Whether your a fan of Battle Angel Alita or not, if you love Anime, you owe it to yourself to go see and support this. As a fan of the original comics and OVA, you will be disappointed by the lighter tone of the movie when compared to the darker and grittier tone of the book. The feeling of Dread in Iron City is not as pronounced as it is in the books. But understand, if your making a movie that cost 200million dollars, it has to appeal to more than just fans of the book. I can let this slide. And its almost a shot for shot take on the original Animated OVA. So any fans of the OVA will be happy about that. The big eyes, again, its stops bothering you soon after Alita is introduced. Notable differences from the Anime, is Chirens Hair color is black and not Blonde, Chiren and Ido had a Daughter, Ido's mark on his forehead is gone. But its addressed in the movie. Motorball is introduced as an element to drive the narrative and it succeeds very well. You get a few flash backs into her past and a vague introduction to Desty Nova. The cast resembles the comicbook counter parts very well. I was happy with the casting. Both, Hugo and Ido were done right and the same goes for Alita. Again dont worry about the big eyes. If anything it makes Alita her own character and the facial expressions were very well done.

CONCLUSION: I thoroughly enjoyed it. Go see it, whether your invested in the story and characters or not, its worth your money, just for the CGI alone, action and entertainment value.

I'm not an Anime fan, so I didn't expect to really like this movie, but I... really liked it. What impressed me the most was that they kept all the OTT Manga cartoon themes, but made them work in a more serious film so that they don't feel cartoonish. The critics who bashed this are narrow minded idiots. Watch it, if for no other reason than because it's one of those movies that is a milestone in the evolution of CGI. 100% will see the sequel. This is a great feature film. Ambitious, action packed, and great performances all around. I genuinely hope we get a sequel because this was a fun ride!

This was a fantastic movie with some of the best action scenes I've seen in years and a stunning cyberpunk world that feels believable.

My only criticisms are (1) some character backstories are not fleshed out as well as they were in the original manga, but that's understandable given the runtime limits, (2) it's clearly one story in a longer story, which may disappoint viewers who aren't aware of that, and (3) the city was too clean.

Overall was great fun though, and I'm looking forward to seeing it a second time.

Best movie I've seen in a very long time. Good story, always something that is happening and the places they are at are so good. I would love a sequel.

This was fun and visually impressive. However, now that the film’s setting and characters have been established, hopefully the sequels will have less convoluted plots, and not as many obvious plot-twists.

Alita is a very good adaptation and a must see. Probably with some of the best CGI ever. The story is fast, emotional, I loved every second of it.

I will try and write this without spoilers I will say that this is actually quite a faithful adaptation of the original books, it suffers a little from the "John Carter Effect" where people might find it sounds off more recent pop culture (II will try and write this without spoilers I will say that this is actually quite a faithful adaptation of the original books, it suffers a little from the "John Carter Effect" where people might find it sounds off more recent pop culture (I notice some of the "professional" reviews call it derivative without addressing that the original material predates much of what they are comparing it to) There are changes, but for the most part those changes make the film easier to make and for the most part actually make the narrative stronger. The TL;DR this film has been made with love of the source material and it shows in practically every single frame! Expand

The worst thing about Alita is that, in the hands of more competent script writers, this could have been a really great movie. Currently it stands as little more than a very well produced mess.

I really liked the Alita as a character. I found her personality interesting, her motives good and her acting solid. Unfortunately the rest of the cast just didn't manage to keep up. Most of the actors felt a little out of place and the dialogue they were forced to deliver was simply atrocious.

That being said, the action scenes were top notch and the whole thing was very cool to look at. They could have used a few more scene locales besides "Doctor's House", "Slum Streets" and "Roller Derby", but those did at least look good.

The plot is also a bit of a mess, and feels like they took 5 different plot lines and stitched them all together into a big mess that doesn't work logically. Instead of Alita making any sort of realistic journey through the world of Iron City, she just kind of appears randomly wherever the story needs her to go. It made the whole place feel very small and full of extremely convenient accidents. There either needed to be less going on or more movie to fill the whole thing out.

In the end, we're given something that is sorta fun to watch but hardly worth recommending. This has all been done better before and I'm not certain it warrants the sequel it demands at the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no denying that Alita's motion capture is the best visual spectre in the movie. But let's move past that. Rober Rodriguez is always an odd choice given that he is not the best storyteller nor director for his actors. As usual, when James Cameron is the screenwriter, there is always the same arc, plot holes and the...

...the love interest always dying. It is quite clear that there is an intentional setup for a sequel, which is usually why there are so many questions unanswered. But we definitely need more on where she came from and why she didn't visit the command deck on the fallen ship again...
The script is written in a way that we really don't care about them, even when they are killed off...such as Vector, Shereen, Ido or even Hugo...

This movie could have been this year's breakthrough, but the directing and script really ruined it.

Loved it! Salazar is amazing, and the story is truly compelling. The only thing I didn't like about it is the abrupt ending. If you plan to do a sequel, the film itself has to stand on its own. (See: Star Wars)
