This is the best live action anime adaptation I have seen in a very long time. I felt it did a good job of telling the first part of the very long and deep story that is Alita. I really hope there will be a second movie.

Very entertaining and sometimes hard-warming movie. Great visual effects. The roller-game seems a bit off. Maybe they lacked time to properly include it in the story. Great acting by Christoph Waltz. I am eager to see the next movie :-)

The short version: it was fun but it could have been better.

The long version: The movie was over all a good time in the theater and the special effects were really well done. However, the story was too rushed, too focused at times on visually impressive though unimportant plot points and then blowing right through important character/relationship building moments making some motivations seem a bit thin. I do hope there's a sequel though - it deserves a fleshed out ending.

The only major issue is the attempt to compress more than 3 graphic novels into just 1 Film (merely 2 hours long) representing a massive (if not impossible) challenge - the Film adaptation appears to portray the best attempt (to please everyone or as much of the audience as possible). Hopefully a 3+ hour long R-Rated extended (uncut) version will be released in the near future (which flesh out each character exactly as it was done in the manga).

Japanese Manga loves to stretch major plot lines over hundreds (some literally nearly a thousand) episodes, so it's impossible to please everyone, especially (I suspect) most western audience who have been culturally brought up to expect plot resolution within (merely) 3 Film (Trilogies).

Battle Angel begins at the bottom or the worse possible location (the junk/scrape yard of a civilization) & the 1st graphic novel intentionally portrayed that there is an even lower level/world (the sewers), from then-on Alita slowly begins moving up in the world. Therefore, the first few graphic novels were (to me, personally) the most boring story arcs of the entire Battle Angel Manga. This has me (as a fan) worried concerning how this film adaptation expects to draw in new audiences/fans while depicting (what was to me) the most boring story arcs in the entire Battle Angel Manga? Considering that if this Film does not perform: will the better/superior story arcs in this manga ever be adapted as well in the future?

I'm willing to pay for at least 3 3D IMAX tickets to Alita's sequel(s) right now (even if the sequel itself comes out after 2025).

When I first heard Alita was being made into another real action movie from one of my beloved anime/manga series, I was so certain it would be another flop

I am so very happy the makers of Alita Battle Angel proved me wrong.

I was getting goosebumps when I saw how true to the anime this movie was.

The character development of Alita was such a joy to watch, going from innocent and sweet, to tough and badass. The facial animation and the eyes was so beautiful to behold.

Story pacing was pretty spot on and kept me invested from start to finish, and I didnt even talk to my friends during the movie which we usually do.

The fight choreography looks to be performed by people who know martial arts properly

CGI is just masterfully executed that I totally couldnt tell the difference between Alita and the other real actors on screen. Music is really nice and suits the movie really well. Actionscenes is just awesome, specially the Motorball ones :D

The world was so interesting that I want to visit it for myself, and hope to see how Zalem looks like.
If people have not yet gone to see this movie as they had my apprehensions for this adaptation, please go to the cinema and watch it.

Help make Alita get her rightful sequel or trilogy. This movie deserves it :D

Thanks every person who was involved in making this movie. THANK YOU ^^

This is already one of my alltime favorite SCI-FI movies made. It was just pure joy :D

There is a little of the 'uncanny valley' to the CGI but, anime eyes notwithstanding, that fits well with the subject matter. The cast are all very good, and there is some real emotion associated with the spectacle. It was disappointing that the movie ended without a clear resolution, but given the size of the manga, I was not surprised. The film's action sequences are very impressive (as you would expect given Rodriquez's back catalogue). They rely more on 'show' than 'tell', although there is some exposition it never really bogs down the story. Expand

The movie is mostly true to the source material, Rosa Salazar lends the movie an emotive and entertaining performance, the action sequences are the best I've seen in a while, and the CGI is the best I've seen since Avatar released around a decade ago. The only downside to this movie is the romance feels somewhat rushed and the story pacing can feel slightly fragmented in parts; however, I believe that is one of the downfalls of adapting source material that contains multiple chapters into a movie that hopes for sequels instead of a series, so I won't really count that against them. Best of all, the movie shoots to entertain its audience among its various areas of competence as opposed to trying to push political rhetoric. I hope to see multiple sequels as a result of this film's success! Expand

Yeah, critics suck and have no clues bc they have to rate according to the social justice system a foot today. So the only real pulse of what is good and not comes from user reviews. So to the point. It was great. A hard task using a lot of CGI but they made that work well. Hard not to use CGI with the level of robotics involved. Again, I liked it a lot, hope we can see a sequel. Expand

Downside? Motorball is rubbish. Movie should have been more self-contained. The goal should have been the immediately reachable one, the problems at hand should have been harder to overcome to make this movie feel complete.
Should have avoided showing too much about the overall goal for now. The movie was made with sequels that may or may not happen in mind. It should have been made as a self-contained story, with threads that can be tapped for sequels (a la the first Star Wars)

On one hand, we're told that such a character must be a victim of "the patriarchy," which turns her cold, angry, and self-serving--which is what we have with Marvel's newly christened "most powerful superhero ever, "Captain Marvel." She exists because of political agendas and ugly feelings towards men, capitalized by Brie Larson, playing the title role, whose irrational, unfettered hatred towards other people should make her most worthy of the part of the hero's antagonist rather than one who the world should look to as their hope and a role model for others to admire.

As can be seen by the shills in the movie critique community, all sorts of excuses can and will be made for a film with a political agenda. Money drives today's politics and social experimentation, so, sadly, a large portion of "film critics" have sold their souls in order to save "Captain Marvel" from itself, in order to, somehow, plant the seed in impressionable minds that this film is THE future of cinematic heroism, to fundamentally change what it is to be known as "heroic."

Then, we have Alita: Battle Angel, a title out of Japan, known basically by only the most committed fans of anime and manga, whose story doesn't have any political agendas or desire to change anyone or anything. The title character is a female warrior who has lost memories of her past and is restored from her wrecked physical form by a benevolent doctor, who gives her the body he had hoped to give his ailing daughter before she is killed.

Given that the story has no political or social agenda, Alita is presented as a relatively normal young woman, who is initially saddened by her loss of memory and not knowing who or where she is but becomes excited to learn more about her surroundings. There are good and bad things happening, and as the story progresses, Alita learns that her circumstances are rather dire, but she regains, little by little, her memories until she becomes confident that she's a warrior who will defend herself and those she loves.

Two things that I see are impactful in Alita: Battle Angel, firstly, she is a young woman who behaves like a young woman who desires relationships with other people. She doesn't discriminate about who she wants to befriend, apart from knowing who behaved, decent people are, and those who would take advantage and harm her. This creates in the audience empathy for her, and most people immediately like her because of her troubles and the way that she carries herself through them.

Secondly, it becomes obvious that once she comes to the realization of her fighting abilities and penchant respond appropriately in dangerous circumstances that, all in all, Alita's character is handled masterfully. She's always the precocious young woman who hopes for a brighter tomorrow, but she's also aware of what danger that she's currently in. She also falters and nearly fails, since the burden she has taken upon herself, to preserve the lives of those she cares for, is almost overwhelming. Everything about Alita turns you towards her and you sincerely want for her to succeed, because she has her own personal desires, but those desires include preserving those who are important to her. There are indeed times when this film seems long, especially during the times between Alita and Hugo, the "romantic love-interest" in it, but that certainly isn't enough to smother the other plot elements driving the story forward. Also, those familiar with the source material for Alita: Battle Angel are at a huge advantage over those who are being introduced to her in this movie. That's undoubtedly true for anyone familiar with a novel, events in history, or in this case a comic book series, but it being something far more foreign than something from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also given "film critics" the opportunity to judge it more harshly than they would for movies about American "superheroes." But, ultimately, this is very unfair, especially for many who have immersed ourselves into the other media created about Alita. We know who she is, far better than the critics who have responded to Alita: Battle Angel with a good measure of disdain.

Yes, a movie should stand on its own regardless of its sources, and anyone watching it should get a good grounding into what is happening with a character and why events are happening. If there is anything "bad" to be said about Alita: Battle Angel, it's that it can leave the uninitiated with feelings of confusion regarding all that's going on. However, it seems very hypocritical to me that so many American reviewers will see a similar film with similar unfamiliar expectations and be swayed by the "message" of it, completely overlooking all of its many flaws.

I'm just glad to see so many people who go to movies to enjoy themselves are enjoying this movie. Personally, I love it.

I nearly fell asleep halfway through because it was so dull- the story was not at all consistent and jumped from one subject to the other that I honestly didn't know what was happening anymore, and it was super predictable in every way. nothing in this film made me go "oh, didn't see that coming" except for when the dog gets murdered, but it made me so mad I wanted to leave the cinema. I stuck through it till the end, only for there to be a cliff hanger to set up the second movie that I somewhat wish will be better than this one? Which is really impressive. You think to yourself I couldn't tell...at all. Alita: Battle Angel is faithful to the Manga in a good way. With some minor changes to suite the film format. To be any better it would have had to be a 3-4 hour long film in ala LOTR honestly... I hope the sequels are a little longer. The Villians are not as violent as in the Manga, it would have balanced out Alita's response to them if they were presented as such. At it's core this is a big budget fan film that remains incredibly faithful to the source material which is certain rare in Hollywood. The problem with fan films is that they never speak to film critics the same way as they speak to the target audience. As a result (which you can see in the review scores) you have critics being very "meh" about the film, while the audience tends to lean more towards loving, especially fans of the original Japanese Manga. Here is the thing, before this film I had never heard of Alita in my life. I am a casual anime fan at best, and mostly have a passive appreciation for manga and anime. I went into Alita with no expectations other than maybe hoping it would be fun. When I came out of the movie, I immediately went to Amazon and bought every volume of the Alita manga collection available to me. This film made me a fan. It's fantastic. Alita as a character is so wonderfully done in this film (which translates well from the manga I've been told), and you quickly find yourself able to be in her shoes. Her memory is shot and this world is new to her, just like it is to me having no experience beforehand. While there is a quite a bit of exposition that explains the world, the story itself moves so freely that you understand the world quickly and easily. There are no long winded speeches here about this society versus that society and what's evil and why we don't like this guy or that guy, no the movie manages to weave the story and the backstory together in such a way that it all comes together perfectly. Alita herself is a little beast, Rosa Salazar does a super job at convincing us that she knows how to fight for herself. The visuals are some of the best CG effects ever which bring to life both the beauty and the violence of the world Alita finds herself in. The Villains all bring the film together, while not playing a super large part in the film itself, they do serve their roles very well to act as motivators for what pushes Alita forward towards conflict. The only negative I'd have to say is that the romance in the film is a bit childish. Like a teen film in a lot of ways, but from what I've been told, it is very similar to how the manga portrays Alita's first love. So I can forgive it, especially since the romance doesn't overpower the rest of the film. Like the villains, the romance is just another part of this weaving narrative that brings the movie together. At the end of the day, the film is just freaking fun. It's a great time, and it made me a fan of this world and this character. I want to see more of Alita and I hope this film does well enough for them to make more movies. Expand

How real someIf you want my fair unbiased opinion, “Alita: Battle Angel” would have to be the profound definition of what style over substance is but at least the style is actually worth looking at because again it looks freakin’ gorgeous. How real some of these characters look, the way the fight scenes play out as well as how the world building progresses with each passing scene shows off James Cameron’s expertise and how and where Robert Rodriguez plans to take this series if it gets the chance to do so. So from a distance viewpoint, it’s close to reaching Avatar spectacle levels but unfortunately beneath the surface, that means the storyline, the tone and the screenplay initially have to suffer as a result. Storyline is nothing special but it feels cluttered just because of how much they crammed under two hours, tones switch from time to time and if you ask me, this film is unapologetic about the fact that it’s an anime and that its style over substance because it is in your face. The only saving grace there is around that substance revolves around the characters, specially Alita, because they are fun to see.

I will give credit where credit is due cause both Rodriguez and Cameron worked their asses off to make this as real, as believable, as enjoyable as possible and if you’re down for a sci-fi slugfest, then you got where your money’s worth. Otherwise, lower your expectations to get a more subtle experience in the theater.

Verdict: 6.5/10
