I was shocked - the movie was excellent. It was faithful to spirit of the original material (thus making the story/characters meaningful and good), with entire scenes even taken directly from the source. The action, and effects were superb, the acting great, and all without any identity politics or preaching. A symphony for the eyes and ears that creates a cinema experience so good I have rarely, if ever, experienced - even on repeat viewings (best in 3D in IMAX in my opinion). The feeling of happiness and contentment you get from seeing something special is like that of few other movies. I've heard it compared by older folk to the feeling of leaving the theater in 1977 after Star Wars a New Hope.

What really makes the movie work though is the performance of Rosa Salazar as Alita. One can't help but love that character. The large eyes are not a concern, as you will accept them very quickly, and they work stylistically and plot wise. The knee jerk uncanny valley reaction is an initial reaction that is quickly overcome by the humanity and likability of the character.

For parents, keep the PG13 rating in mind, as there is violence (not gruesome, but they get away with more than they should due to it happening mostly to cyborgs), and the ending will probably be under appreciated by pre-teens.

Was the movie perfect? No. It's because you get so engaged and immersed in the movie, you notice really little things - lines of dialogue that you'd change or have the actor redo, and perhaps an effect or two that could have been improved catches your eye. Or maybe that it sets up a sequel may bother some (but hey - the movie covers only 2 of the 9 volumes of the original manga - what do you expect? Harry Potter did not defeat Voldemort in the first movie either, and I see no one complaining about that.). But then, if you're honest, you remember how incredibly trivial these gripes are when in relation to how the movie makes you feel and to the overall experience. If you then ask yourself how many stars do I knock off for these imperfections, you realize that no movie could ever reach a perfect score if held to the same criteria. If I were to give this movie anything else than a perfect score due to its faults, then a perfect score is pretty much unattainable for any movie, and what's the point of having a score no movie ever gets?

I got curious and went to see it, and I'm so glad I did. This is easily the best movie I've seen in a while.

I've always loved science fiction and cyberpunk, so Alita was right up my alley. Just several minutes into the movie I knew I was going to love it. It has everything - detailed and believable world, amazing visual effects, but the best part by far is Rosa Salazar's acting. She was given a task to make a cyborg from the future seem real and relatable, and she absolutely nailed it. This achievement is even more remarkable, considering that her performance was relayed to the viewer via a computer generated rendition of her character. This performance is the reason moviegoers everywhere fell in love with her character.

Speaking of the character - the eponymous Alita absolutely steals the show. We follow her hero's journey from the moment she wakes up in a new and unfamiliar world. The movie thankfully avoids the common pitfall of turning the female protagonist into a Mary Sue. Despite being truly exceptional Alita is still a human. She has her strengths and weaknesses. Her character flaws are the extensions of her virtues: she does not stand by in the presence of evil, but because of that she might pick fights she can't win; she's idealistic and hopeful, but it also means that she is very naive; she's independent and determined, to the point of being headstrong and unruly. A character that has both strengths and weaknesses is easier to relate to. Having to work around one's flaws and shortcomings helps demonstrate the strengths. Shadows make highlights seem even brighter, as the saying goes.

This movie is truly one of a kind. If you still can catch it in theaters - give it a watch. Otherwise - get it on Bluray when it comes out. It's a movie everyone should experience.

The script just carries the movie to hell, it's **** garbage, but the visual effects are nice. I did't like the art direction and costume don't know why. The sound of the movie was loud as hell too. I was happy when the movie ended.

Before I start, something you should know is that I have only seen the first 30 minutes or so, so my opinion doesn't reflect the full movie but MAN did I want to watch more of it. The way certain things are left out of the picture as Alita focuses on what she wants to.
Gonna leave the review here cause I don't want to say something wrong.

I never thought I'd end up enjoying this movie as much as I did. Sure, it does have its fair share of problems; it contains a romance plot that mostly distracts from some of the more compelling parts and the third act feels quite rushed. However, this movie has a whole lot of heart, more so than almost any movie I have seen in theaters in a long time. Amazing sci-fi cyberpunk blockbuster with heart.

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie so much, A true strong female character that shows that you can be bad ass and feminine at the same time. It was exciting, and the movie really put a smile on my face. I watched it three times and will do again. Best CGI to date, great emotional story, amazing character development, a lot of fun and outstanding action.

Alita caught my heart the very first moment she opened her beautiful eyes. What a likeable person, discovering and enjoying the simple things at life like eating a orange or chocolate. The movie take you by the hand and directs you through a very emotionaly rollercoaster drive.

Alitas development from a innocent girl to a strong hero fighting against the evil is such an intense experience. This is my favorite movie for now. I also bought the manga to know more about this fantastic world. The blu-ray will be bought as soon as it hits the market. I really hope for a sequel, this movie is AMAZING!

Absolutely loved this file. Alita is the movie of the year for me. Rosa Salazar did a Oscar worthy performance bringing Alita to life, and there is no way you can't fall in love with her character. And no words can explain the action and special effects.

Beautiful and touching stories. Not to mention the amazing effects and fighting scenes. Great stories and when it's ended, you felt like, what!?? Haven't watched enough. I want to watch more!!!

James Cameron has been dreaming about making Alita: Battle Angel for decades. He bought the rights to the 90s manga and has been sitting on the property, having to continuously push it back because of technological demands and the demands for Avatar sequels. Cameron co-wrote the screenplay and handed the directorial duties over to Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), a talented visual stylist who has been struggling of late. The marriage looks good and the final 122-minute feature is the closest a live-action film has ever gotten into replicating the look and feel of an anime.

The storylines, the action, the scenes were so engaging and yet balanced that 2 hours felt like just one. The actors nailed the scenes and action so well and so seamlessly that I am sure there was a tremendous amount of work put in to make it that way. I have watched both the IMAX and digital formats and definitely you need to go for the IMAX version. First off, if you're a fan of anime/manga or cyberpunk, stop reading this and watch the movie now! For the rest, this is a really good sci-fi action flick about a girl's search for meaning and purpose in the world.

I'll admit, it's not a perfect movie, and some action fans thought the dialogue was too melodramatic. Other complaints were that they crammed too much plot into the two hours. Then there's those critics who complained she was too sexualized, which wasn't the case at all. It seems more likely these critics were just writing articles just for clickbait.

However, if you go to the movie with an open mind, you'll definitely get a lot out of it. There is actually a deep philosophical & spiritual theme about what it is to be human weaved into this tale, since it retains the core essence of the original Japanese story.

Interestingly, people who complained about the big eyes beforehand really forgot about it during the movie. That's because Rosa Salazar's ability to act and emote with her face (not to mention the animator's work) really helps you fall in love with her character. IMO, she really deserves an Oscar for her performance.

I also really loved the father daughter relationship between Ido and Alita. It really felt like they were a real family with a rebellious teen asserting herself.

Of course the action scenes were fantastic! They are all filmed clearly without any shaky cam or too many cuts. In fact, many martial arts were used in the movie including Ip Man's Wing Chung and Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do.

Lastly, Junkie XL's soundtrack is amazing! I've been a big fan of his since he did Fury Road. I've since bought it and listen to it all the time. It has touching moments for the character scenes and hard hitting electronic music for the action.

This really is a must see in 3D if possible since it was actually filmed in 3D as opposed to added afterwards. But at this time, the theatrical run is almost over. So if it isn't playing in your local theater, do yourself a favor and buy it once home video is available.

Rosa is fantastic, Alita feels so real my mom thought the 'address' got cosmetic surgery to get eyes that big.

It's not only the CGI, it's emotions, she just feels so real.

The plot involves every characters introduced, which is outstanding because in mangas, the characters are mostly within their own arcs, which is also why anime or manga adaptations usually are horrible.

I know the ending sets up the next movie, but that's just how serial works. Most western showed are episodic, and that urks me too when I first came to the states and start watching the cartoons. We in the east are used to serial shows that always leave you hanging at the end.

Maybe they shouldn't make the movie 40 hours long, maybe then people will so complaining

"You left the theater with the relationship, feelings and the themes. That is what important." - Rosa Salazar

I watched this movie more than once in the theatre, never I did this in my whole life. I went to this movie with low expectation, like any other movies because I treat them as "entertainment". This movie is without its flaws, with little plot issues here and there. But as Rosa said, you left the theater with the feeling and emotion and Alita: Battle Angel EXACTLY DOES THAT! That is the most important thing you should measure. The VFX is top notch, one of the best. The action scenes are well done, I'm never a fan of action scenes, but Alita did it for me. And again, when you think about the film, you think about the feelings and emotions and it's indeed the sweetest film in my life. Alita: Battle Angel will always be in my heart.

I don't understand with other reviewers saying it's cliche. The film takes the source (which is from the 90s) material seriously, and what love is not cliche anyway?

This is what and how Manga and Anime movies that are brought to live action should all aspire to do and be. For people who are not familiar with the original story, the pacing might seem a bit rushed in some areas, and some of the character connections might have been better formed through the narrative and dialogue. I do think enough clues are given along the way that this should not be any real obstacle to fully understanding and appreciating the story as it unfolds or forming audience connections with the characters. The mix of drama, action, and humor were on point IMO, and at no time during my first, second, or even fifth time seeing it did I ever feel that time was dragging and I wished a given scene would just hurry up. The movie definitely has a positive rewatch factor. The world itself is fully developed and with tiny details that crop up over repeated watching. At my fifth time seeing it I was still finding little new things I hadn't truly noticed before that continue to add depth to the world. It is a movie I have happy recommend to my friends, even those who are not into the anime or manga art forms. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. : Alita works so well as an allegory for growing from child to adult. That alone makes her relatable by anyone. When we see her experience small joys in life like eating Chocolate for the first time, we relate. When she wants chocolate instead of dinner, we relate. We've all been there. It's charming and endearing and there's a child-like sense of wonder and innocence to her at first. But then she begins to grow and mature and find out how dark the world is. She realizes she has love for other people and that there's a lot of risk involved in that. She goes through phases of adolescence like her first "puppy love" crush and relationship developing. She goes through the "trying too hard to be cool" phase that is so well demonstrated by her speech in Bar Kansas (that gets laughed at) and her incitement of a fight. She flaunts her hunter-warrior license even though she hasn't even carried out a job yet. She thinks she's all grown up now even though she's not. She even wears a leather trench coat in that arc. Can you think of a better attire of a teenager trying too hard to be cool and badass? Haha. So many of us have been there, especially if you were a teenager in The Matrix era and the period after that film's release (late 90s/ Early 00s). Eventually she learns harsh lessons that we all learn, like that people aren't always what you assume they are, that love can blind you to the truth, and that rushing into a relationship without truly getting to know the person can lead to its failure. There's a lot of serious heft to this whole arc, but the overall theme is universal... childhood innocence eclipsing into adult loss of innocence and concern for how difficult and dark the world and life can be. Seeing Alita sink to abysmal lows and not give up is one of the most inspiring things I've seen on screen in years. They really took it to a new level with that fight scene against Grewishka. There were serious and severe consequences to her overestimating her abilities. I think we all have some moment in life that that scene could represent. This scene had weight for every character, not just Alita. It caused a lot of changes in the people around her and inspired other people to be heroes. That's what makes Alita such a great hero. She is a hero who doesn't just save people, she inspires those people to become heroes too. If she hadn't done that, she'd have died midway through the film, but in her time of need, she got the help she needed because she had inspired others to be courageous and stand up in the face of evil. Starring Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past - she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she's grown to love.

I read some of Alita's books, and I really liked them.. so when they announced the movie, I was so bumped up, then I lost hope to see this amazing idea comes to the big screen, and now, they finally made it!!! And it's so very good!!! Enough with the introductions, let's get into it...

I really loved the movie, for the most part, it has lots of stuff to love actually, it's a sci-fi, action movie.. with some romance, it's so easy to love, especially with the fans, I think this movie gave every fan of the manga what they want! The CGI of this movie, for the entire runtime is just flawless, Alita's face is so close to the manga, it's the closest anime/manga character adaptation I ever seen! The action sequences made me on the edge of my chair, I mean it gave me all what I wanted. The performances are not that great though! Rosa Salazar as Alita is just perfect, I loved her, also Christoph Waltz as Ido, I love him as an actor and he did some great job as Ido. Jackie Earle Haley is also good as Grewishka. Jennifer Connelly on the other hand is not good, at all, I didn't enjoy her performances at all, Keean Johnson is also bad, as well as Jorge Lendeborg Jr. I'm not gonna talk about Mahershala Ali, because of I'm so conflicted about him.
The story of this movie is also great, I really liked it, it's surprisingly fun and adventurous!

The screenplay on the other hand is the most disappointing thing through the entire movie, James Cameron did some amazing movies like Avatar, Terminator and Aliens.. he did some amazing job with these movies, but with Alita: Battle Angel is not that amazing! There is a scene of Hugo and Alita while eating chocolate, suddenly Hugo explains Zapan to Alita for no reason. Also the romance between Hugo and Alita is rushed, and no so heart-warming. There are some other points, we'll get to that point in the spoiler-review, because I have lots of stuff to talk about, but I don't want to spoil anything to you, guys.. I just want you to watch it blindly.
The screenplay is my biggest flaws with this movie. The movie is still also suffering of some issues with the narrative, that we'll talk about them in the spoiler-review.

The OST is just.. EPIC! Junkie XL did amazing job again, as he did with Mad Max: Fury Road. Alita: Battle Angel is super-epic and.. great, still suffering of some issues, but still a really fun movie to watch, and satisfying. I'm gonna give Alita: Battle Angel a B+!

And as always, thank you, guys for reading and supporting my work, really appreciate it, and if you liked it you can click on my name up above and see all of my reviews.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. it may be lacking in some areas like the handful of plot points that are just dropped, or some of the ridiculous ways they get out of situations, but the movie is beautiful. It doesn't ride solely on the CGI either, the actors did an amazing job, and the fighting was kickass. Even watched it a 2nd time hoping I overlooked something or maybe I was just in a mood, but it got even worse the 2nd time. The only saving grace to this movie (though at times were a bit over the top) were the special effects, but honestly, if you didn't see this movie in 3D you missed out on the movie's only good quality. As for the 3D, though good, especially during the fight scenes that they obviously put a lot of time and effort into, most times felt like a flat experience having you forget you were in a 3D movie (though pay special attention to crowd scenes like the early scenes in the marketplace, you can see great depth between people which very well may be overlooked because done so well). But none of the effects were so good to make you overlook the cringe-worthy dialogue/acting. Which I couldn't tell if they are just bad actors that couldn't bring the words to life and speak them as actual human beings interact, or if the script was just that bad. Either way, the end result is the same. Beyond that, the character development was severely lacking, and outside of Alita I found myself constantly trying to remind myself what each character’s name is. To cap it all off for me was the forced love story, that goes from meeting each other to “I would die for you” in what seems 2 days time. This movie is a catch22, because the movie I believe at best is wait for it to come to Redbox/FX, but then you miss out on the 3D effects that make the movie watchable, but then it's not worth the exorbitant amount they charge for 3D movies. What a masterpiece of movieart. I watched it three times and will do again. Best CGI till today, great emotional story, amazing character development, a lot of fun and outstanding action.

Alita caught my heart the very first moment she opened her beautiful eyes. I felt with her like it was my own daughter. What a likeable person, discovering and enjoying the simple things at life like eating a orange or chocolate. The movie take you by the hand and directs you through a very emotionaly rollercoaster drive.

Alitas development from a innocent girl to a strong hero fighting against the evil is such an intense experience. This is my favorite movie for now, I like it better than avatar. I also bought the manga to know more about this fantastic world. 3D blu-ray will be bought as soon as it hits the market. I really hope for a sequel, this movie is AMAZING!

My wife and I weren't really expecting much of this movie but this was a really entertaining. It was so great to have exposition that wasn't forced down your throat or the characters telling you every plot/twist/turn. Also, we didn't know anything about the books and found it was very easy to follow the plot. The only reason its not a ten is the sappy teen drama was an eye roller a few times but honestly bearable to the BS most movies push at you. Very good character development and despite being CGI you actually walk away caring about the main character. So glad we watched this instead of Mayor McCheese Larson and her blank emotionless character that has no flaws/character development. Hope they make another movie!
EDIT: Watched it a second time and the teen drama aspect didn't bother me at all. I watched with hour long cartoon and they kept it pretty true to the source material. I'll get it when released on disc/digital and if they make a sequel I'll for sure see it. Great movie!

Rosa Salazar shines as the hero Alita, and she is the stand out star of this movie. I have not seen the anime or have read the manga so all of my thoughts about this are strictly about the movie as I have no real knowledge about this property.
The things I liked about are the performances all around. It stars Rosa Salazar as the main protagonist Alita, and she does a great job in this "fish out of water" kind of scenario where she can't remember who she is. It is fun seeing her go through this journey to remember who she is. It doesn't just feed all of the flashbacks to the audience which was well done. She receives some memories during important moments. One example of this is the first time she gets into a fight and she remembers a battle she fought in hundreds of years prior. The way the flashbacks for the most part were executed well except for one of them. Another positive was the world they set up. This is a world I would like to see developed a little more, including the history of this Great War between the United Republic of Mars and Earth, (At least I believe they were fighting Earth). Some negatives are that the story doesn't reach a satisfying conclusion. It ends in a cliffhanger, which I hope they will continue in a sequel because this character deserves more. But I don't usually like when movies end in huge cliffhangers, especially if it seems like that movie won't be getting a sequel. Another negative was the way one of the flashbacks was handled. In total they show the audience 3 flashbacks of Alita and the first 2 make sense as to why she's remembering them at that moment in time. The last one seems to be just a random moment during the war. Looking back it might have been about the mission to destroy the flying city of Zalem, but it seems like a random flashback as we already know that is what her mission is.
Overall I think Alita: Battle Angel does enough on the surface to be a solid standalone film, but it does leave a lot to be desired and I really hope they make a sequel to this.

I was mildly disappointed in all of them for similar reasons, and so I went to watch Alita: Battle Angel, hoping for something more out of recent movie releases. I wasn't counting on it to be honest, so I started with a negative attitude.

I got everything I wanted and more.

Alita does what Captain Marvel wanted to do. It gave us a strong female heroine who kicks ass. It gave us a person confused about their identity, but wanting to do good. However, where Captain Marvel got bogged down in the scope of itself - trying to do too much in too little time - Alita doesn't. It does more, actually, and fits it in nicely with the time it has. I don't even think Captain Marvel is a bad film either, Alita just does it better.

It asks questions like what it means to be human or female to begin with. Could humanity ever war between planets in our solar system? Can you love just the brain of a person? Then, after all that? It practically kicks those questions out of the way in epic battles and a whirl of a romance. Alita doesn't bother itself too much with the MANY philosophical conundrums of the movie, it sweeps through these problems, and moves along as much as it can. Its characters don't question these things too much, but rather accept them as part of their world and continue on with their lives. For some this may make it seem cheap. For myself however this made the world feel real, engaging, vast, and fresh. You'll feel like Alita has only scratched the surface of exploring an incredible new world of science fiction when you leave the theater. That is world building done right.

Furthermore, from its first scenes onward, Alita builds its characters properly, starting with the basics and moving from there. It doesn't try to be too extravagant, but it also doesn't give us bland and boring one dimensional people of cardboard. Almost every one of them has multiple motivations, faults, and desires which are demonstrated, giving us excellent characters to follow through the film.

And follow them you do, through awesome and beautiful sets and through incredible actions sequences. The CGI does its job of making the cyborgs never look completely human, while also making them look believable real, and this comes together for some jaw dropping action sequences that you half to see on the big screen.

So go and watch it, you'll have a world to explore, a heroine to cheer, and a spectacle to watch. Alita : Battle Angel delivers it all, and it is worth every penny and more.

Cannot wait for the 3D BluRay. HIGHLY Recommend to see. It is not a waste of money or time just be ready for something different. It does have a couple of slow points but overall was great so i give a 9/10. I have a strong feeling this is going to be a Firefly style fan base in which when people finally see it they will love it so spread the love and tell your friends to see it Expand

This was the exact opposite, I loved seeing the movie, but the more I thought about it afterwards the more I liked it.

Go see it if you haven't. If you have go see it again.

At points the dialogue was somewhat strange, but considering that it's a manga adaptation I ignored it. Would watch again. Waiting for a sequel.
P. S. Fun Fact: the chocolate in that scene was made by Rodriguez himself.

There was not a single sliver of fat on this film -- lean, consistently entertaining, and flowed elegantly, leading to a cliffhanger ending arriving far too soon. The performances were on point, particularly from the lead, with her impressively able to convey range and depth right through the CG effects. The love interest's performance was less impressive, but the rest of the supporting cast along with the photography direction, superb editing, excellently shot actions scenes that had me clenching, dying to stand up swinging and cheering, and cursing under my breath at the villains made for a supremely satisfying experience. You can bet I'll be picking this up on blu-ray and keeping an eye on any of Rosa Salazar's future projects. Expand

I've seen this movie 3 time. I'm thinking of seeing if for a 4th. Why is this note worthy?

1. I rarely make time to go to a theater to see a movie. Maybe once every 6 mo or more.
2. When I do go, it's even rarer that I see it in 3D. Some 3D movies are uncomfortable (giving me headaches or hurting my eyes), and unimpressive.
3. When I do see a movie in 3D, it's unprecedented that I see it a 2nd tme in 3D, let a lone a 3rd time.

Alita Battle Angel is an amazing movie, and good enough to motivate me to do all of the above. The CGI, and intricate detail in the machine parts was absolutely amazing. Especially in IMAX 3D. Except for some minor changes, it stayed close to the source material. The acting from most of the cast was top notch, and you really cared about the characters. The action was mind blowing, and Alita's journy from an amnesiac naive girl, to a badass warrior is extremely compelling. At no time in this movie was I bored in any of the showings, even after seeing it 3 times. I left the theater each time wanting more. This is by far the best live active Manga/Anime adaptation ever created. This movie deserves a sequel.

Want to know how to make a strong, powerful character who is still human and relatable to both men and women?
This is how you do it. Rey and Captain Marvel havn't got **** on Alita.

An awesome faithful adaptation of a popular manga. Hope it gets a sequel. No political agenda inserted or allowed.
