It is an original story that engages the viewer to the deeper and darker story behind the character Alita. Her innocence and eagerness to reach her full potential only highlights the bigger story she is part of. The details the graphics not only engage further but keep you asking for more. The story is set up as a sequel and boy I can not wait until the next one is made. Today movies are just like amazon items: we do not care what an expert may say but the reviews of those that actually seen it. Critics are a thing of the past. Expand

A solid remake that takes most of what was great about the OVA if not the Manga and expands upon it. The Mars subplot feel a little off but is as good a reason as any for Alita being a superpowered death machine.

The goods : The cast was fine for the most part, Gunnm looks fine to me. The bad : the second most important character of the movie : the city, is butchered... it's all shiny and almost clean and crips, when the city should have been dark, rusty and dirty. The liberties taken with the story are ridiculously crying to appeal for teenagers... "let's bundle while playing a rollerblading game"... nonesense. Gunnm is my favorite, I really wanted to like the movie... but I'm not 16 years old, so I unfortunately can't. Expand

On one hand, it totally delivers on the unique sci-fi world and entertaining action sequences I had hoped for when hearing about James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez teaming up. On the other, it totally delivers on the “Disney Channel”-level writing and acting that I was expecting after seeing the trailers for it. The love interest is the worst part of the film and their romance that blossoms is difficult to watch. Nearly every line of dialogue ranges from cheesy to terrible, producing several unintentional laughs from the audience. Rosa Salazar is solid in the titular role and I really hope to see her in something this big again, just with a better script next time. It’s really the action that makes this film though. Alita is undoubtedly entertaining during those sequences and I was really surprised by the amount of violence in it, considering it’s PG-13 rating. It’s a really stupid movie but, honestly, it’s also pretty cool and the world presented is just stunning and awe-inspiring to look at.

It really makes a difference if you're into the comics/cartoons with these two movies. I was in the incredulous camp after SR didn't do as well as I thought it should. It was , for me, a great, live-action depiction of an anime classic. But not everyone watched it when they were kids and that absolutely played into its box office performance.

Alita suffered the same I feel. I knew nothing about it, and it seems like there's a loved in world going on, but I never lived in it. For me, it was a YA cash grab that fell short. Kinda reminded me of SR and Robots. It lacked depth that I'm positive was provided elsewhere. And it came off extremely silly at times.

On another note, I find it funny now that its marketers tried to use a "hey, at least it's not Captain Marvel" strategy. Nope, ots not, and I have to admit the plot was better, but not by much. The eyes didn't bother me, tbh, but ironically, Christoph Waltz' hat did.

While not as gripping as these others, it did have very interesting elements to it that I found intriguing.
This "live action" adaptation is not doing the anime (or manga for that matter) much justice. The film starts by trying to lure people into Alita's character by giving her a childlike demeanor and wonder. This all falls quite flat though when she starts showing off her latent abilities. Later they then try and lure you in a second time by making her character develop relationships and affections so you can be reminded she isn't just a robot, but a cyborg.
In the end the story has too much backstory to covey and hides most of it for the supposed Sequel (so help me god if they call it anything with "Tears" in it I will be very upset). So what happens is the entirety of the film is character development for Alita, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but they never really flesh out her character. Is she bent on revenge, does she want her memories back, is she looking for answers from her past, and so on and so on. The only real driving force seems to be a lust for battle, a very strong message delivered in the anime and manga.
The thing that rally got me was all the goofy cyborgs. This movie works better as a cartoon. Having real faces of real people basically CGI-ed onto robotic frames got very old. And di you know the people who brought you "Avatar" did this? I sure did when I saw Alita's comically large eyes. I was not sure if this was an Avatar get or a bad jab at anime/manga characters having large eyes (by the way they are drawn that way because Japanese people find beady eyes disturbing and/or shifty, they really think Mickey Mouse is some kind of villain, I swear). To put it bluntly the visual effects are good, but they are also overused. Everything looks fake and you know its fake and that's the crux of it. The nurse lady is the only cyborg who even remotely looks cool and she gets like 3 minutes of screen time the entire film.
So in the end, save yourself the trouble and just watch the OVA Anime. Its not great, but its better fair than this and since it is animated you won't have ghost faces pasted onto CGI robots.

Complete story? This is a complete joke. Can i please have a movie that doesn't setup for a sequel then flop. Absolutely ridicolous and a complete waste of my time. I'd like my money and the two hours i spent watching this movie back. It is infuriating to keep watching these movies which by no means have an "end". Rodatrded can get as poetic as he wants with this BS but there is NO end NO sanctification for the watcher. A complete money grab to spend 2 hours admiring CGI. "grossing a respectable $404.9 million worldwide, not enough to guarantee a sequel". Not only did this movie take 20 years to make but the next one isn't even likely to happen. That's all movies are nowadays, lets end with some massive cliff hanger never really getting to the end leaving the audience with complete blue balls hating their damn lifes so they come onto metacritic in the hope these idiots take some advice. Stop wasting out da*n time watching this crap just to be left with NOTHING. Yeah she just watches her boyfriend die then joins the "roller ball" league of whatever. Brilliant absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy your money because that's all your getting from this. Nobody is impressed and the people rating this positive are simply here for the pretty colors. Simply a waste of time. DO not watch this movie if you are finally trying to find a show with an acutally ending. AND NO rodtard, theres NO ENDING. nothing not a single bit. This should be the first episode of a series. Ridicolous and neither of you should call yourself directors, because you dont give a flying about the watching experience and just want to see the $$$ signs roll in. Well congrats take your 400million and shove it. Expand

The performances in this movie were good, but was Rosa Salazar who took the hit by the skies playing a good-sized character like Alita, and in what way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alita was fantastic...for a while. It's ultimately a juvenile film but the premise and suggested backstory was so fascinating. Can we not make a film about that? Our protagonist is at first mysterious, then by turns sweet, sassy, and tough . The performances by the human cast are OK. The world created here is great. Where the film falls down is Iido's ridiculous costume...the hesitation to immediately put Alita into her new body was so disappointing and....the horrible and unsatisfying ending which reduces the whole enterprise into nothing more than an advertisement for a follow up film; the curse of the modern action film. My overall impression was positive, I went in blind..I know nothing of the Manga, and have no desire to search further. The 'roller ball' could have been abandoned after the initial sequence...I felt at times like I was watching 'Running Man'. It was with disappointed nostalgia. Pure CG action sequences that don't involve our protagonist...well let's call it a cue to take a bathroom break, or check the phone for messages while things go 'bang' und 'Clank'; So thanks for giving me the chance to break my immersion.

There were a lot of beautiful moments and exciting build up...ALITA getting torn to pieces and her surprising escape was excruciatingly tense. I just feel with a few tweaks to the story this could have been really something. Not following or being aware of the Manga roots I realize this story may be deeper than presented here and the rendering may have been true to it's origin. I was indeed overall entertained. Message to studios: Stories need to be braver. Like ALITA, we can take it!
Thumbs up for a great effort.

Amazing thrills and visual entertainment movie, although it's produced by the genius James Cameron, but it's not the same quality of the masterpiece "Avatar".

The story was enjoyable with a lot of breathtaking moments, also the visual effects was perfect, for the performance I think Rosa Salazar gives the leading Battle Angel her actual heart, also Christoph Waltz did a great role, in contrast, the role of Mahershala Ali & Jennifer Connelly didn't fit them, I think they participate just for film marketing.

If you like CGI movies, don't hesitate to watch it, I am waiting for the sequel, I hope it surpasses "Alita: Battle Angel".

I typically don't enjoy movies like this but I love it! Disney if you don't produce a sequel you may as well consider your path the same as your first two attempts at Star Wars. Goodluck Expand

What a mindless game, oh, also the film is a lot like the competition.

Alita: Battle Angel

Rodriguez is a mystery to me. Something I can't solve. Particularly, his definition of style. I do not understand this part of narrative. At all. The director Robert Rodriguez persists on applying makeup to every frame of the film. Every scene is beautified to be adored on large screen but then he also craves for the harrowing images that apparently is to express the other side of this world. This mixture of alluring and disturbing images should have attended the perfect balance. And yet, it breathes sad air, poignancy, irreplaceable and annoyingly unsettling is the feeling you are left with. Addition to that, loud and cheesy background score, poor editing, amateur camera work and chalky conversation gives away the film within its first five minutes.

A film that then, runs on formulaic structure that was found to be outdated ten years ago, is just a cherry on top. The crown is snatched from Godzilla: The King Of Monsters, that was considered to be the worst investment of the year. The action is more obsessed on painting the frame, in fact any physical sequence for that matter, the makers are persuasive on coloring the film with crowd pleasing color rather than work on the choreography or the momentum behind those empty punches.

The vfx that everyone is drooling about, is yes, admirable but still not highly detailed or perpetually convincing, simply put it this way, I have seen better, polished and much smoother, than in this so called futuristic world. Each character is given an introduction individually, a smart move if you have somewhere deep to go, they are as thin as wafer and transparent as water. In fact, the only way you see someone surprise you, is Christoph Waltz, who through his performance sculpts a resonant message as he fixes Rosa Salazar's- aka Alita: Battle Angel- suit before she enters the competition.

Alita's uncanny valley issues aside (mouth more than the eyes), she came across as very human with complex emotions. Christopher Waltz as Ido was the perfect casting choice, he nailed the roll and his natural features are close enough to the original character though I fully bought into him as Dr Ido.

TLDR: Good cast, good/strong characters (except Hugo), true to the source material and makes me want more.

An ambitious, imperfect movie whose biggest flaw is that it tries to take on TOO MUCH material in one go.

The visuals are what you come for, of course, and those do not disappoint. They have more of a "hyper-real" and stylized approach and it works well to make you feel like it's a manga brought to life. The only time they fail is when the CG style clashes with a real world that just can't be as outlandish.

Never read the source material, but I felt like it was trying to cover too much ground, forcing a final act that should have left a bit more to the imagination instead of doing sequel setup.

This film was so much fun. I gave it a 9 out of 10 because I thought that they could have given us more in the story department and because I thought that the ending could have been better.

The visuals in this film were stunning and I loved the character of Iron City. The fight scenes were spectacular, as were the characters/bounty hunters. It really is a beautiful film visually, so yes, I'm impressed.

Problems with the film are that the story could have been more, idk, better. I do understand that when world building there are information dumps that have to happen. If the film makers had taken the time to do these dumps properly, it could have been a more satisfying film. I also wasn't impressed with the ending. You can't just end it like that and not give us another film.

Overall, I do recommend this film and I hope they make another to wrap up the loose ends of this film.

One of the best movie I've ever seen, thanks to Rosa Salazar's performance, thanks to the story written by James Cameron adapting a very good manga, and thanks to the Iron City universe created by Robert Rodriguez.
Alita is not an industrial production, it's a craftman's work. The story has been meditated by Cameron during 20 years. It came through several filters : the manga, next the OVA, Cameron's script, Rodriguez's script, the novelisation and then the film itself. It results in a nectar.
Every single part, every single component of the movie is carfully carved, as is Alita's cyborg body.
The storyline is good, the characters are really good, the CGI is awesome, the love interest is relatable, the score is totally adapted, action secenes are tremendous.
If you take one of these elements separately, of course you can find better movies : I'm not saying it is the best everywhere. But it is very rare to get a movie which is really good on all these compoents at the same time. This is what makes it exceptionnal.
Quality is everywhere. This movie has been made out of passion, carefully, with talent.
Rosa Salazar's performance is amazing, even if her character is CGI.

Flaws are outweight by the freshness and the strenghts of the movie, therefore 10 stars ! Alita has the freedom to be treated as a great character and not as a vehicle for a polical statement. A huge leap forward in any instance. She is a great, strong, relatable, female character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you see Alita as a pure action movie, you miss the most important part about it. It's not about the action, the action serves the story. It's about Alita's character, about her emotions, about her relationships with the people around her.
Her Journey starts as a little girl, discovering the world around her, as a proxie daughter for Dr. Ido. But she develops, she grows into adolescence with all the rebellion and over-confidence coming with it. She makes mistakes, she suffers defeat, and she comes back stronger then before. She loves and is loved, and while she discovers her place in the world throughout the relations to her father figure Ido, her love interest Hugo, and her friends, she as a character is not defined by them. She shows the entire spectrum of human emotionality. Alita isn't just a fictional character - she's the most human being I've ever met. And that's why this movie is so great.

But the central movie line is about Alita, her journey from an insignificant girl to a fearless warrior, with a pure heart and strong character.
From the beginning to the end, you have an emotional connection with her, from the first breath and open eyes to show yourself the world to first innocent love and fight with evil, all it's possible because she represents human values at the subconscious level.

I remember seeing the first trailer for the film all the way back in December of 2017 and not sure what to expect. It was being billed as a James Cameron production with direction by Robert Rodriguez. It seemed interesting with some great visuals and a intriguing story. But then, the film was pushed back from December 2018 to February of 2019 and as we all know, release dates being pushed back is hardly ever a good sign. Now I was having doubts. I walked into the film not exactly knowing what to expect or how it would end up. I am glad to say that I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this film and how well the story flows and how great the performances are. Rosa Salazar of “The Maze Runner 2 & 3” actually tore at my heart strings. She is performing the part under some digital creation, much like Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana did in “Avatar”. She brings raw emotion and compassion to her robotic self that is so riveting and compelling. Her scenes with Christoph Waltz, who plays her “father" in a sense, are touching and the connection he shares with her after his daughter’s death is some of the movies best scenes. But what truly steals the show here is the great effects work. The visuals are outstanding and all the robotic models for a lot of the characters involve tons of imagination. They truly look to be a part of their robotic selves. I absolutely love the motor ball sequences. It reminds me a bit of “Roller-ball” and it is really cool. I am actually hoping for at least a video game of this cause it’s a good idea from some new sports entertainment. From beginning to end, I found myself wondering about Alita’s past and the film does a great job giving us piece by piece throughout without giving away too much at a time. The only real complaint I have is the final act of the film. Two things really. A characters death is taken away only for it to happen again in the last 5 minutes of the film. It just seemed a little redunant to do this. I had no problem with the death but using it 20 minutes earlier only to do it again was a little bothersome. Also, the film really has no ending per say. We get a lot of build up to a big conclusion that never comes. This is because of a planned sequel with the main villain getting a cameo here by a big name actor who appears for 5 seconds before the credits roll. The issue is not a cliffhanger type ending but the fact the box office right now is not good. A sequel literally hinges on numbers from China and we may never get the continuation of this and that would be a shame. All in all, this movie is very enjoyable and am really hoping for the story to continue.

Grade: B

It really is just that good. Rosa Salazar's performance is top-tier amazing (especially considering what she had to wear during filming; check out the behind the scenes videos), the visuals are stunning and the fight scenes are jaw-dropping.

One complaint I see from some people is about the story and the set-up for a sequel. What has to be understood is that James Cameron wanted to stay close to the original manga story that is comprised of 9 books from the early 90's. So, to maintain the integrity of the original manga, there are some parts of the story that cannot be removed, overly modified or simply told over the course of just one movie. With that said, Cameron and Rodriguez completely nailed the attitude and feelings of the original manga. Simply put: there is a reason why Cameron chose to tell Alita's story and it is absolutely fantastic.

If you like action, a strong and likable main heroine, amazing visuals and a great story, this is your movie. If I'm not convincing, go watch any, or all, of the hundreds of audience review videos out there and you won't regret diving into the world of Alita: Battle Angel.
