The general pacing and overall gameplay mechanics have been considerably tweaked which makes the flow of the game more satisfying as opposed to a once occasionally dull affair. The AI and combat seem much more polished and the irritating sea exploration has been vastly improved. Still not on par with the likes of Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword which may raise eyebrows as to why Nintendo are looking backwards as opposed to forwards but we can be guaranteed more Zelda titles in the future and this is a nice HD reworking of a title that wasn't perfect but just needed the odd-tweak and we now have a fine product.

For those who have never played it, I would say this is a must. I remember when this was on gamecube and I was very disgusted at first by its toonie graphics mainly because I was expecting a Zelda game that had graphics to where it looked like Lord of the rings. You know what? I learned a valuable lesson in that game to not judge a game by its graphics because that game was the most fun in a Zelda game in a long while.

Only reason I give this a 9 is because its an HD remake not a new Zelda game and its also not the HD remake I was hoping for. I honestly believed Majora's Mask was the HD remake with all the videos on youtube which was the main reason I wanted a Wii u, but you know what I understand why they remade windwaker.

Its the most non-linear Zelda to play, so they wanted to test the grounds with a big open world and communicate with players with tingle bottles to get a jist of what Zelda fans are wanting new in the series. Windwaker has the largest map out of all the zelda games.

So I will say yes this game before was good and this one is good too. In fact this is only the tip of the Iceberg of the Zelda upcomming in the future. So after you beat this I'll guarantee it'll get you more pumped for the newest one coming out

Story - emotional, funny, but also bittersweet (mainly talking about the ending here). The concept of Hyrule being flooded lends itself to some great storytelling, and the characterisation of most characters is so well done. Link, Tetra, Ganondorf, and Medli stand out to me.

Gameplay - your typical Zelda experience, which means great puzzles and item usage followed with engaging combat. Never was bored of whacking enemies (except those goddamn magician-bird thingos).

So yeah, overall, I just wish that I could have played WW as a kid on GameCube, had I had one. I mean, seriously, I'm gonna be thinking about it for a long time. Thank the heavens for The Legend of Zelda.

this is definitely how a remake SHOULD be done, the new features and controls are much smoother and definitely improve upon what made the original tedious or annoying. the new swift sail is the savior to those who get bored of the long sailing times and the unnecessarily huge amount of times you'd have to change wind direction with the Wind Waker. The tingle bottle feature is just as amazing as well. I always had a hard time filling up the Nintendo figurine gallery in the game, due to missing some bosses and whatnot, but this feature helped fix that this time around. And besides that, it's also useful for hints and tips, or to just be silly.
The new gyroscope feature used for the arrows and boomerang was pretty useful to me as well, since using the other analog stick felt somewhat odd.

Although I'm not one much for graphics, this game is just stunning with the HD upgrade. Proof that even cartoony cell shading styles can be stunning.
Besides that, the game still feels the same, but at the same time it doesn't, the magic is back in a new way. If you're a Zelda fan and loved the Wind Waker, this would be worth a pick up!

However, Nintendo has tweaked the game to perfection, making it even better than it was before.

There's nothing quite like staring at the Great Sea and looking at the silouhettes of distant islands, waiting to be discovered. Wind Waker has one of the largest worlds in all of Zelda. But in a way, this is kind of a delusion, since most of the game's 49 island are really small in size. This was a slightly disappointing thing to realize, but we cannot forget that this is a 2002 game. Still, I think the game would have greatly benefited from including an additional large-sized island such as Dragon Roost or Windfall.

Wind Waker's gameplay feels like a swift evolution of Ocarina and Majora. The combat is fun, introducing the ability to utilize enemies' weapons. One gripe I have with the combat is that Z-targeting feels really clunky and limited. You have to be really close to an enemy in order to target it. As for items, Wind Waker has a fantastic selection, and I really appreciate how useful most of the items are. It's not like Twilight Princess, where most items become souvenirs of their respective dungeons. Here you can even use most items in combat, like stealing treasures from foes with the grappling hook, or killing a miniboss with a single fire arrow.

Wind Waker's dungeons are enjoyable and memorable, but I wish they included more difficult puzzles. As it is now, I think it's probably the easiest set of dungeons in any 3D Zelda. As most people know, Wind Waker had a rushed development cycle, and one dungeon was cut off from the game. This is truly a shame. It's not that the game feels incomplete as it is, but an additional dungeon would have certainly made it even more well-rounded.

The story is simple but good, and contains plenty of cool references to Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker also has the most interesting and mature Ganondorf of any Zelda game. The world of the game feels lively and is packed with secrets to find. The art style speaks for itself, there's nothing I can say about it, aside that it looks great. Music is also good. It's not my favorite Zelda soundtrack, but that's just a matter of personal preference.

The Wii U edition features a very good graphical overhaul, but I still think the original game looks better in some specific aspects. Some people won't like the amount of bloom effect this remake employs. This remake also introduced a faster sail for the boat, which is very appreciated, but it kind of defeats the whole point of controlling the wind direction with the wind waker. I think it is good for aliviating the tedium of travelling all over the map in end-game quests, but I also think the game gives it to the player way too early. This remake also cut parts of the infamous triforce quest, but I won't be commenting on that since I never played the original. Finally about the Wii U version, I have to say that framerate drops can be just baffling at times, and there's way too much pop-in in the great sea. Come on Nintendo, the Wii U is more capable than that.

Boarding the King of Red Lions and setting sails into the unknown, that is what makes this game special among Zelda titles. Wind Waker is a game that has aged exceptionally well. It's no wonder people love it so much. It has its rough edges, sure, and it could be better in some areas, but it is still highly enjoyable if you like Zelda games or adventure games in general.

This is a great game hampered by a few flaws.

    The Good:

-Beautiful cell-shaded art design makes the game pop, visually.

    -The controls are mostly spot-on.

-Story is captivating, even if it takes some detours.

-Each new island you explore is unique and introduces new items/gameplay elements to be used for the rest of the game.

-Combat/sword fights are fun and surprisingly complex.

-Creativity and charm ooze from this game.

-Side quests give the game replay value.

-The characters--in particular Link--have very expressive facial animations. This pretty much makes up for the lack of recorded dialog.

    The Bad:

-No recorded dialog....it's all text, so get ready to read when you're playing this game.

-There is no autosave and when you DO save and reload at a later time, it starts you at the BEGINNING of the level you're in every time. It's possible to spend 10 minutes or more just to get back to where you were when you autosaved. Apparently they forgot to update the save system from the 2002 Gamecube original. The game SHOULD just load at the exact spot where you saved or a nearby checkpoint--which many games do these days. But it doesn't. This is the game's biggest flaw.

-The camera angle needs to be adjusted all the time. It's manageable, but can be slightly irritating.

-Much of the time, you're given clues as to where you should go/what you should be doing through speech with other characters. However, there are times where the game really doesn't give you enough to go on and expects you to figure it out. It's like the exact opposite of games like Call of Duty, games that 'hold your hand' and give you hints as if you're an idiot. In these moments, if you're like me you'll break down and watch a YouTube playthrough of that particular section to figure out what the game should've been more clear about.

-Although it technically is an open-world game, you aren't allowed to just wander out into the world within 20 minutes of starting the game. It's not a Fallout/GTA/Far Cry type of open world. It's closer to a Super Mario Brothers type of open world where you're only allowed to replays levels you've already been to, if only to look for other quests/stuff that you either missed or haven't unlocked yet.

I recommend this game to die-hard RPG fans who can stomach some of the more frustrating aspects of this game. There's a great game to behold in there, but at times it can be buried in a lot of **** Just know what you're getting yourself into.

The use of the touchpad is done fairly well, although simply used for inventory purposes, it allows you to control it from the secondary screen while still being able to move.

Gameplay wise, I've only just cleared the first dungeon, it has taken me quite some time to get into the game, this is possibly due to me not having huge excesses of time to play on it, I feel if I had a whole day to sit and play it I would get into it more, but at parts I can find it slightly drab and tedious.

I think my reason for shying from Zelda games is because it's never had that experience point laden RPG experience I appreciate from so many other RPGs, I realise this isn't really the Zelda premise, but I sometimes think heralding back to the Zelda II: Links Adventure, may help the franchise slightly.

The adaption of the pad's gyroscope allows for a more direct experience with certain items that allows the player to be more involved and works very well. Of course, the player can choose to play the game in the original format which is always a plus.

Wind Waker's world is massive and I mean massive. It's a gorgeous world to be explored but its sheer size means most of the map is empty with maybe a treasure here or there with most of it being rupees. That being said, one of the biggest problems was sailing was tedious if you wanted to explore in the original but this new one fixes it by offering a special item that cuts travel time quickly and allows the world to be explored more efficiently. Another improvement is the game's flow, modifications to a certain aspect of the game allows for the experience to feel more fluid and less choppy near the end. With these improvements, Wind Waker HD is without a doubt one of the best Zeldas.

Also I just love the art style, it's very charming.

However, there were some other issues I had with it: I was a bit confused by the item-screen on the gamepad, and changing items using the touchpad scared me since I felt like I was scratching the screen trying to move the items. Just nitpicking. I like the idea but in my case it slowed me down a little. Also, aiming with the WiiU-gamepad was kind of difficult and left you vulnerable for slightly longer than necessary.
Other than that, the new controls worked fine (although naturally it confused me at first, as someone used to playing it on the GameCube) and I had a blast playing it in it's new form.
This game is special in many ways, it wasn't afraid to break new ground with it's visual artstyle back in 2002 and it looks fantastic in HD. The battles run smooth and are immensely fun, and the bosses are just as great. Sailing is faster, the part of the game labeled as the most tedious is shortened, and the newly added Tingle Bottles are a nice touch that I like way better than the Tingle Tuner.
In conclusion, Wind Waker HD is worth its price. The developers took an already marvelous game and sprinkled some extra gloriousness on top of it.
    I can definitely recommend it.

An excellent combat system is Wind Waker's biggest strength, offering tactical and precise fights with a very nice variety of enemies. Gorgeous design and overall interesting puzzles are abundant as well, but you may be patient with the very tedious sailing mechanic, which is very important in this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Similarly with Ocarina of Time, I never played the original Wind Waker for the GameCube, so I decided to try out the HD edition on Wii U. And I can say this: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a truly beautiful game every Zelda fan should try out. It may not be as strong as Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess, but it is still an amazing game (9/10 is a good score, right?).

The game is set a few hundreds of years after Ocarina of Time's adult ending. The gods flooded the land of Hyrule after Ganondorf broke free of the seal that was cast on him in Ocarina of Time. The inhabitants of the kingdom fled to the mountains, which became small islands surrounded by a vast ocean. And so one day, a young boy named Link sets out from his home in Outset Island after his younger sister was taken by a huge bird creature. In his journey he meets a pirate girl named Tetra (who is actually Princess Zelda, yet she's unaware of it) and a talking boat named "King of Red Lions" (who is King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule in disguise). The story is full of memorable and emotional moments, like usual in the Zelda franchise. The game has also a beautiful soundtrack, although not as great as the soundrack in Twilight Princess, it is indeed better than Ocarina of Time's. The character designs look very cartoonish, but they make the characters become very expressive, making the game very emotional. The dungeons are mostly well made, especially, IMO, the Earth Temple, which is my favorite in the game. I like how the items are used a lot outside of their dungeons. The game also has a bunch of fun sidequests that will keep you busy. And finding treasure boxes in the Great Sea feels so rewarding.

However, the sailing periods are overly long; even after obtaining the Swift Sail, travelling between islands gets boring quickly. The game's puzzles are mostly easy in a negative way. Overall, the game is very easy, to the point I've never been killed, unlike in other Zelda games. The Triforce quest is somewhat painful to do (yet I'm aware that in the original game it was way longer). Sword training with this man named Orca is very repetitive. And I despise with passion those segents where you use the Deku Leaf to move platforms by blowing air on some weird mechanisms.

Regardless, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a beautiful game that you will enjoy a lot.

It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The graphics and art are really clean and charming (I remember wanting it to be more "realistic" when the game came out in 2002, which I think is silly and now I'm able to appreciate the art a lot more), and the storyline, characters, and pacing were all ideal. I really liked the integration with the Wii U gamepad - I thought it was strange at first but it became quickly intuitive, and it was a neat way to try to play the game more actively because although you could, you didn't have to pause every time you want to switch a new item in. The fighting, enemies, music, and the world are all classic Zelda with a twist, and I enjoyed every minute of it! I also liked the "social" aspect added in this game with the Tingle bottles, some of the messages and photos sent were hilarious.

Overall, great game for both series fans and those new to the series! It was a wonderful, relaxing, and exciting experience to play through, and makes me want to replay the previous Zelda games as I was very young when most of them were released. There is plenty of exploration and wonder to experience side stories, and enough direction to make sure you are not disconnected from the main storyline and are engaged throughout. The "Zelda" character in this game also is one of my top two in the series. Classic Legend of Zelda magic right here :) Highly recommend.

+ the world begs to be explored, and sailing the Great Sea is one of the best things to do in a Zelda game.

+ This game has easily the best iteration of Ganondorf. He actually has a character with motivations other than a generic evil guy.

+ The sidequests are really fun, and the minigames are some of the best in the series.

    + The music is ungodly.

+The gameplay actually has a lot of depth to it, which is much appreciated.

+ Every dungeon is really well deigned and immensely fun to run complete

+ Medli automatically makes this game at least an eight.

    - The triforce gathering segment, while greatly improved over the original, is still quite boring. the mini dungeons are really fun, but paying tingle to unscramble three charts is not very fun

As far as remasters go, this HD revisión pretty nails it, the cel-shaded effect is not exactly the same but it looks good, there are not a lot of modifications which make your experience more or less the same as the original, one welcomed addition is the introduction of a faster boat veil which is not tied to the direction of the wind, this veil comes at 2/3 of the game, so is more like an endgame item and doesn't affect your playthrough as intended. Another addition is to change items with your Wii U Pad, you don't need to pause the game in order to access your items, however, the game was not intended for this active system, so at least when you're fighting, expect to pause the game and change your item or be prepared for some annoying moments otherwise. There is also a message system (that was replaced with the GBA compatibility of the original) which sounds a lot like the message system of Dark Souls but it was part of the Miiverse ecosystem that has long gone, so I couldn't try it at all.

As for a Zelda game is a solid entry, although it has pretty noticeable flaws, the most important to me is its linearity, from the start and till completing 1/3 of the game, you can't sail to wherever you like, your boat, in a Fi fashion (from Skyward Sword) will tell you that he doesn't recommend you to go to "X" way and reallocates you to the right way, this is pretty upsetting since the sea is there for you to conquer it but you can't. Another thing is the difficulty, you can play it in Hero mode from the start which is nice but is still pretty easy, the enemies with a few exceptions have pretty noticeable attack patterns, so you will be exploiting them a lot, also the dungeons are OK with the last one being pretty bad and annoying, the boss fights are fun but also incredibly easy and formulaic.

For the good aspects, I loved the story, it has some nice twists and turns and also thanks to the art style it also tells it in an expressive fashion like no other Zelda before, to me there is no better iteration of Ganondorf, it feels like a human and he gives one of the most memorable fights and moments at the end of the game, it makes worth your time just to see what I'm talking about. Once you break the linearity barrier, Wind Waker offers a nice freedom of exploration, for budget reasons, there are not a lot of islands like towns (there are like 3 only) but in every island or "corner" of the sea is a treasure or a secret waiting for you, so it gives a nice sense of exploration, merge it with an outstanding score (which was also rearranged but is still true to the original) and you will have an amazing time onwards. As for the art style which was heavily criticized back in the day, it has aged like wine, maybe it was developed that way because of budget reasons but it turned out great, Link and every character has a lot of soul, mainly because it's easy to see their expressions through their eyes or animation.

Maybe in some aspects, WW has not aged that well, but in anothers it broke the pass of time, is not a hardcore Zelda by any means but it has a lot of charm and pleasure to be had nonetheless, I think this is a nice introduction to the Zelda universe to a newcomer or someone that is not that "hardcore" with videogames.

Si tienes Wii U y si eres fan de The Legend of Zelda, debes tener este juego si o si. Expand

One of the best Zelda games and 100% worth it to buy a Wii U for. It fixes on all of the issues of the original and keeps true to the experience. My only complaint would be that the bloom effect looks weird on some places, but other than that it’s great.

Despite the fact that the majority of the largest plot points were spoiled for me prior to playing it, my enjoyment of the game was not hindered in the slightest. The characters were fun and colorful, and the art was a fun change in the classic franchise. I do wish the game had more side quests available beyond treasure maps, which to me left a lot of wasted potential with such a big sea. But I'll give them credit that with it being a Gamecube game there was only so much they could do, and the amount of content in Windmill Village made up for it. Wind Waker may not have made my top favorite Zelda games list, but it definitely made for an amazing experience I'm sure I'll relive again one day. Expand
