A beautiful game that has a wonderful old-school simplicity, where the only survival mechanic is how many hearts you have. Feels a bit over-priced at £50, but hey ho, it's Nintendo, they have a habit of being the most expensive games on the market.

This is an amazing experience that makes you believe that you actually are in a dream like in the story thanks to the art style, the music, the enemies and the dungeons. I never played the original game in Game Boy, so it was great for Nintendo to remake it this way

Beautiful art style and music. Keeps the classic feel of Zelda while introducing new game features. Few frame rate drops and sometimes a bit too confusing for me. Overall a great game and recommend.

Some of the dungeons are a little forgettable but they're all undoubtedly a good time with puzzles that present a decent level of challenge.

The music, as with most Zelda games, is fantastic, and the presentation of Link's Awakening just oozes charm, so it ends up being one of the best looking games I've played in a long time.

The only drawbacks are that there are noticeable frame rate drops, and that the new dungeon maker mode could have been fleshed out a bit more. It could've done with more features and online functionality to let you share your dungeons, but even as it stands it's still nice to have. In the end, it was hard not to love Link's Awakening. This is another excellent Zelda game and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The inclusion of Hero Mode from the get go is good for those who want that little extra challenge. The Dungeon Maker is also a very nice touch (although not very robust), and adds some extra content and playtime to those who want it; however, it is a bit disappointing that you can’t share or download dungeons online. There are some frame rate issues when transitioning from screen to screen, but I feel that doesn’t greatly impact the experience. There isn’t a whole lot that can be said about the remake that can’t be said about the original: this is pure Zelda, and it’s just pure fun. Make sure to get this! Expand

One of the most famous and well-received games on the Gameboy is back with a complete remake on Nintendo Switch. From updated graphics to the new quality of life changes to the gameplay, does Link’s Awakening (2019) live up to the original or does it take too many missteps along the way?

Link is sailing across uncharted waters when suddenly his raft is struck by lightning and he wakes up on a mysterious island with a giant egg in the center of it. He meets Marin, a young girl who lives on the island tells Link about the legend of the Wind Fish and how awakening this creature might help him escape the island. Much like the original game, the story is simple and to the point. The new setting that Link finds himself in is very different and almost dream-like compared to other games in the franchise While most of the story is told at the beginning and end of the adventure, there are many small interactions between well-written characters and even touching moments within these interactions. Don’t expect this to be a grand adventure like in previous titles since its story is more like a peaceful and calm dream, which ties heavily into the game’s theme and atmosphere. The story is a fun, bite-sized adventure in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

The gameplay is very similar to past entries that deal with the top-down perspective approach. You go through the world, trying to find dungeons and then solving the mysterious within to get one step closer to your goal of awakening the Wind Fish. This game truly harkens back to the Gameboy days, since you are not given many hints when solving puzzles and I got stumped at least once or twice throughout my 15-hour playthrough. It feels satisfying solving the puzzles and getting to the next part of the game. There was never a time I felt frustrated at any point in the game. The whole experience was nothing but fun from beginning to end. With that said, veterans that played the original might not find much challenge if they remember the solutions due to all puzzles being the same. If I had any nitpick it would be that switching items can be a bit of a pain since you have to contently swap items in a pause menu. It would be nice if they gave the option to swap items using the d-pad instead. A slight annoyance but nothing too major. The only new addition to the game is a dungeon creator but this mode is a little bare bones. You have to collect room pieces throughout the campaign and these pieces can be arranged in any order to make a dungeon. With very limited tools to create with and a lack of online sharing, I could see this being nothing more than a fun little distraction from the main story that you might fiddle with once and never again. Despite these flaws, this does not take away from the incredible light-hearted adventure.

This is not one of the most technically impressive games on the Switch but it does not try to be. The game tries to capture the feeling of playing a Gameboy game with modern HD graphics that we would expect from this console. It runs at a consistent 30 FPS but due to the simple graphics, I’m surprised it does not run at a full 60 FPS. This is combined with the fact that the open world does not look as good as it should due to weird draw distances that make the bottom of the screen blurry when traversing any open landscape. The rest of the game does not have this issue so it’s weird to see such a thing on a simplistic game. The soundtrack is amazing and perfectly captures the essence of a small game like this. I think this game needs a bit of polish on the technical side of things but these small flaws are something you will get used to throughout the course of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019) reminds me why the original Zelda games are such classics and why there is still a place for them next to bigger endeavors like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game has minor presentation issues and some more quality of life mechanics could have been added but this is still a solid game. This game is worth 60 dollars despite its short run time due to the time and effort that was put in this remake. If you’re not a huge Zelda fan, you could wait for a discount but I would recommend a purchase as soon as you get the chance.

    +Simple and Fun Story
    +Great Exploration and Puzzles
    +Great Soundtrack

While the game doesn’t necessarily do anything especially risky in this remake, I don’t think it needs to because it excels by sticking to the formula that made it work so well on the Gameboy. Link’s Awakening is a bizarre game with some incredible ideas and an unexpectedly emotional plot. It was well deserving of a remake, and I’m very excited that a new generation can experience this gem in the Zelda series. Even though the experience as a whole is marred by some truly unfortunate performance issues and an extra dungeon creator, I can say without a doubt this is the definitive way to play The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in 2019. Back to 2019, I played the game with the knowledge of what will come, so at first, I wasn't that into, but when I rapidly advanced through the world map I surely was immersed in this Koholint Island world.

Link's Awakening smells a lot like classic Zelda, after beating BOTW it was a little hard and sometimes annoying get back into the classic style puzzles and linear story structure, but that cynicism disappeared the more I played, because there is a lot of heart and craft to this game that it's hard to imagine someone, not liking it. The music is spot on, with some orchestral feel or 8 bit sound or even a mix of both. The art style and graphics are so charming that it makes you feel you're a 5-year-old kid playing with your toys.

It has a good sensation of nostalgia, and I don't mean it because it's a remake (of a game that I've never played, mind you), but because the themes in the story and the mood of the ambient, to me it felt like a coming of age story or like a summer trip to a new place where you make new friends but you never see again, that kind of nostalgia.

There are some issues with this game, the majority are minor, things like uneven framerates here and there or passing issues, but my biggest complaint may be the dungeon design; the difficulty is pretty horizontal at least for the first dungeons but things go really vertical at the 4th onwards, and mostly its because you have to do a lot of backtracking, maybe it would be a lower issue (but still an issue) if not for the hero difficulty (it's the hard mode for the ones that are not familiar), which more than challenging I think it's annoying, the enemies do double damage but the combat is not polished enough so at times it was so frustrating to go back from point Z to point A and go around every room in the dungeon and dodge every hazard on the way, sometimes it was better to just die and start in the dungeon's entrance, but I'm not dying and neither Link so we breakthrough just because is our duty and we're heroes. Aside from that, I have a great time uncovering every puzzle in there.

The appeal of this remake aside from the obvious graphic overhaul it's that is allegedly a well-crafted emulation true to the original game (mostly the game boy color version which came after) and for that, its easy to see how this is a timeless game and I will never forget the beauty of its simple yet likable design, choices and characters, and most likely I will never forget Marin.

Another thing is that you really feel connected to the characters throughout the game, which makes the ending that more impactful when you have to leave them behind. My only problems with this game is that the loading screens are a tad long and sometimes when you enter a new area the frame rate drops for a few seconds. You can tell it's a third-party remake though; sometimes it's a bit rough around the edges (slow frame rate when first entering an area, no antialiasing, sometimes weird animations, motion isn't truly analogue with only 8 directions you can move). I got over that pretty quickly though and just settled in for the ride.

Just don't compare it to Breath of the Wild (which is the best game I've ever played), since it's totally different. If you take it for what it is—a remake of a game from nearly 30 years ago—it's great. If you're not sure about the classic Zelda games as compared to BotW, check out A Link to the Past on SNES, which is now available for free on Switch if you are a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber. A Link to the Past is REALLY similar to this one. (Both games are of the same generation.)

Overall a great experience of a classic game with all the bells and whistles of modern games (including markers the player can place on the map to help you remember to go back for things—a really really good addition!!!). Not quite perfect, but cute, fun and well worth the purchase.

The story is really great. Its simple but very effective. I love the overworld and characters. The dungeons were really fun, the bosses were all easy but unique and fun to fight. The games content is all quality. No filler. I rather have a game with pure quality and it being 6-10 hours long, than a 30 hour game with 60% of it being quality and 40% filler. Its a worth wile adventure and worth 60$ thanks to the new graphics, quality of life fixes that it surpasses the original. The soundtrack is better than ever. The only downsides are the new chamber dungeons are just whatever, its not as expansive as Super Mario Maker buts its just okay. Theres a few framerate issues but it never drops below 30 frames so i got used to it. I hope they fix that but its definitely worth while and i think i enjoyed it better than A Link to the Past. And thats one of my top 3 zelda games. Keep in mind i never played Links Awakening for the gameboy, i tried but i couldn't get into it. But im happy this remake exists. Expand

It is a shame that you cannot use D-pad for movement but everything else was excellent. Also, I do love the change over the dungeons, especially the aspect of the last 3 dungeons before the last boss in the egg. In those 3 last dungeons I had to think a lot more to finish them. However, fights weren't that hard. I struggled a little in battles against Gohma, Grim Creeper, Slime Eel and against the second and forth form of Shadow Nightmare, these fights were harder but fun and satisfying (still I died about 14 times only in the room where you get ocarina, since I tried it a lot before obtaining the boots). I like the map a lot as well. On the other hand, I got stuck at the time when I had to find the slime key, since I had no idea that it would be at the farm (even when I unlocked this location before the google time xD), so I googled the localization. Everything else was nice and easy to understand and achieve.

Right now I plan to play it one more time but this time on hard difficulty + on the old save file I will get last secret seashell, 2 last heart pieces and I will max out the dungeon generator (I miss some chambers)

It's gorgeous, features the same amazing soundtrack but with a breathtaking update on it. Everything I love about this game has been made prettier, cleaner, and nicer. The only reason I'm giving this a 9 instead of a 10 is because of the frame rate and graphical issues. The frame rate, for me at least, occasionally dipped below 30fps, when it should have been locked at 60fps. Furthermore, for a game that should have no problem staying locked at 720p/1080p, it often dipped far below those in docked and handheld, respectively.
Overall, an incredible game that is perfect in every way except for technical shortcomings.

Full disclosure, Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game; not the "best" Zelda game per se but it's my personal favorite.

The remake of Link's Awakening is an excellent homage to the original game. The changes, very small though they are, are welcome, bringing what was once a bland color palette with sprites that we had to use our imagination to flesh out the world into a vibrant, colorful, detailed world.

The story and most of the dialogue are unchanged from the original/GBC re-release. It's a strange game with characters from several other Nintendo franchises making appearances. The overworld is now one continuous open world to explore but nothing in the layout has been changed right down to each blade of grass. The dungeons still follow the one screen per room design of the original game which is used to create the new mode, Dungeon Maker. Some of the dungeons have been tweaked to be more user friendly in 2019 but nothing of any significance is lost.

Some of the changes include dedicated buttons for sword and shield, as well as the Pegasus Boots and not having to equip the Power Bracelet to life objects, similar to how the Power Glove worked in A Link to the Past. These are very welcome changes, one of my biggest complaints of the original game was opening up the menu every few seconds to swap items. This change helps eliminate a LOT of menu swapping. There are also fairy bottles now which allow you to store a fairy for later similar to the rest of the games in the series. Small changes to the dungeons were made to bring the game into the modern era, very minor changes to increase quality of life. Some heart piece locations have been moved as well.

The most major change is obviously the graphics. The toy/toon style might not be for everyone but it is perfect for the most obscure of the Zelda titles. I've played exclusively in handheld mode so far and noticed a few hiccups in the frame rate when in the overworld, the dungeons hold a consistent frame rate. My only, ONLY complaint about the game is that the edges of the screen in the overworld are blurred. I understand the reason for the design decision given the games story but it makes the screen feel a lot smaller and feels unnecessary. It wouldn't even be an issue if there was an option to turn it off but alas there is not. This is a minor complaint and the only thing that's keeping me from giving this game a perfect 10. Maybe I'll feel different when I play it in docked mode. I'll update if that's the case.

It's not an incredibly long game but it is a fun one and one that any fan of the Zelda series should try. The puzzles are unique and the original spawned a lot of the Zelda series staples, such as fishing, the trading sequence and Kaepora Gabora (sp?) the owl.

I honestly haven't messed with the dungeon maker at this point, I've been too busy reliving my childhood. The game definitely feels like it belongs in 2019 with a retro twist, similar to Bloodstained.

    TL;DR
A great remake of a classic game with welcome quality of life improvements. Definitely worth playing if you're a fan of top down Zelda games

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Links awakening: what all remakes dream to be.
As someone who has never played links awakening going into this remake I was excited to play a game that is held at such a high standard and loved by many for the first time. The second I booted the game I could tell this game would be challenging but a good challenging. This game is also a true remake in the sense of everything from the original game still exists, including the crazy and bizarre story where link gets lost at sea and drifts onto the island of koholint, where an owl sends you on a journey to destroy a giant egg atop a mountain where the wind fish resides ( I told you this story was bizarre.) Everything on Koholint island makes a return from the original game except the camera shop since there is no longer a gameboy printer or camera, but is replaced with a new dungeon maker that is run by dampe. Now what makes links awakening truly special is that while you are making your way through Koholint island you will encounter many different characters throughout the Nintendo universe. You’ll fight and stomp on Goombas while making your way through dungeons, run into Kirby trying to being eaten, save a chain chomp and even give someone a picture of princess peach. The previous 8-bit world has now been transformed into this artificial plastic world to emphasize that link is living in a dream world. The game has also incorporated the masterfully crafted cutscenes adding even more significance to the story and allows you to build a connection with these characters. Koholint island has also been turned into one single world that you can traverse seamlessly. The games biggest con comes at the price of this stitched together world. Some areas are a little too much for the switch to handle causing frame rate dips both on handheld and docked mode. You’ll also experience these dips when there are too many enemies or other elements on the screen. While this issue is quite rare, when it happens it is extremely noticeable and can be quite jarring. Unlike in other Zelda games where you’ll find the dungeons main item and solve puzzles centered around the item, in links awakening you will end up spending more time trying to figure out how to get into a certain room rather than solving unique, difficult puzzles allowing you to progress in the dungeon. One major disappointment comes in the dungeon maker. Something that at first looked so extremely promising and could have even lead to a main line Zelda dungeon maker game similar to Mario maker, ended up being this very mediocre add on with no other way to share your dungeons other than with the link amiibo, which seems like a huge oversight. They would have been better off keeping the camera shop allowing you to go around taking pictures and share them to Facebook or twitter through the photo albums app. Although links awakening suffers from a couple of mishaps along the way, it’s pros greatly outweigh the cons delivering one of the most beautiful, unique and bizarre Zelda games to date.

I really like the direction they took with the art style, being able to recreate what made the original so special. All the characters and enemies looked really cool, it was really fun to meet all of them. The remixes of the original music was all really cool too, adding so much to areas in the game.

The dungeon builder isn't as in-depth as people wanted it to be, I see everyone seems to want a Zelda Maker. However, it was really fun to go through he challenges it gave between each of the dungeons. It added that something extra to the game that I really enjoyed.

If i’m being honest there were multiple occasions i had to look up online how to get past a certain section, but that’s just because of my small ape brain, and how well these dungeons were made.

While playing i kept thinking “wow, what a game this is” and as my story came to and end, it was the perfect bittersweet ending. I cannot recommend this game enough.

Talk about cute and charming. If you are introducing your kids to the Zelda franchise, this is a great starting point.
I also had fun with this game. The world, although seems a little cramped in today's standards was a character within itself.

Working out the end with the Windfish was quite cryptic and only by accident I found the bonus dudgeon. At the end the dudgeon's were long and exhausting and would prefer a dozen smaller dudgeon's. I understand this is a remake and cannot stray from the original formula.

A simple, yet special story. A very good balance of everything that makes the Zelda series great. Lots of things to do in the overworld, good dungeons and great progression/ gradual opening up of the world. The only thing missing in this game is the replay value.
My review is actually for the original black and white gameboy version, but since Nintendo remade it 2 times, they probably

I absolutely love the classic LInk's Awakening. My parents never really got me a DS, but we did have a Gameboy. We had quite a few games on the system, but none were as good as this stellar The Legend of Zelda title. This remake is awesome, but I do have a few minor complaints about it. I love the plasticky, childlike art style gives me really good vibes. One complaint I have is how the parts mesh together. A graveyard right next to a forest next to a volcano next to a cactus next to a fat walrus does not look the greatest. This game's gameplay is great, and there are hardly any bugs to be found in this. My largest complaint about this game is the price tag. This game is only like 15 hours total, and the game is 60 bucks. I could get Super Mario Maker 2, a game with infinite content, for the same price. In conclusion, this is an amazing game, but I'd wait for a bit of a sale. Have a great day/night, folks! Expand

The game is great. The only thing keeping it short of a perfect remake of the classic Gameboy is the frame rate gets choppy at times. This only happens in areas of water or a ton of movement on screen.

    Really cute remaster. Awesome!

I loved the way that game keep the history and the new graphics. And Switch runs it so fluently.

One of my favorite GameBoy games brought back to life on the Nintendo Switch with gorgeous/cute graphics and just all around fun. Basically if I'm remembering correctly it's just a copy and paste from the original which I'm not complaining but I did get lost a few times. The only thing I guess I can think that's "negative" is that it's too short. I bought a Switch for this game and I sincerely wish that I could give this game a higher rating. In my opinion Link's Awaking on Game Boy was the best part of Zelda (right after Wind Waker), unfortunately I can't say that about the remake. It's still a great game, with lovely graphics, but performance issues make me take one point away.

I can only hope that its sales success will lead to a patch that fixes the framerate dips, and more importantly, the development of more Zelda games in this style. [Issue #43 – November/December 2019, p. 10SH]

If you need a nostalgia trip or haven’t played Link’s Awakening before, then you won’t be disappointed with this release. Just note that it is a bit more bite-sized when compared to more recent entries in the series.

Awakening’s world is much smaller than Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule. But within the island’s depths lies something that was missing from the last game – eight difficult, multi-layered dungeons, each with its own theme, traps and puzzles. [Issue#241, p.66]
