One of my favorites. The remake is gorgeous and you get the full experience of playing a Zelda game : The levels are well designed, the items, music, puzzles and tricks you need, all remind you of what that franchise can provide.
The story really hit me as well, it felt good to always be immersed in the story even while fighting bosses that questions your actions.
    It's still a bit

I didn´t play the original Gameboy title, so it was the perfect chance to do it, the visual concept is beautiful, the game is fun, and very charming. The only thing that could be improved is the duration, the title is short, and you want to play more of this awesome an charming title.

An amazing game, but it's only a remake. It looks amazing, but I feel Nintendo could have done somewhat better with the art style. The story is quite different from other Zelda games and it makes it quite unique.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The remake of Link's Awakening is in my opinion even better than the original, which itself is the second best 2D Zelda after A Link to the Past. I really like the artstyle, the soundtrack is Zelda-typically fantastic and the atmosphere fits perfectly. In terms of gameplay, the game hardly differs from the original, which is why old players will already defeat the final boss after a few hours. However, there were a few small improvements, such as the now permanently equipped power bracelet.
However, I would like to mention one disappointment. In Dampé, you can now create dungeons. I was hoping that this would finally be some kind of Zelda maker. But no! You can only string together pre-made segments, and then you can't even share your "own" dungeons over the internet, it only works via Amibo.
Lastly, I wanted to mention that the performance of the game is only acceptable. You regularly notice frame drops and the dynamic resolution is actually always at the minimum. However, this rarely bothered me personally.
Link's Awakening has always been a great game - and the remake makes it even better. It's easy to overlook the aforementioned problems and become engrossed in such an atmospheric world. For around $40, I therefore give it an absolute buy recommendation.

It is the worst I have seen on Switch and much worse than Stardew Valley 2 player, which I thought wasn't possible. Why does the Switch struggle so much with birds eye view games but then I can play much more detailed 3D games that don't have the issue.

The graphics were an outright bad choice because between the cheesyfied music and matching graphics, it completely loses all that Zelda vibe and emotion. It's like a kiddy fest. Young kids at that.

To be honest, I am considering selling this and just playing the old one that I sideliaded on my SNES mini. I never played it before but I'm guessing it will be better.

Looks like we might have to wait for Skyward Sword to actually get a decent Zelda on Switch.

I gave one point because there were a couple of fun bits in the dungeon. If I finish the game I will adjust my score accordingly but at the moment I am wanting to trade in.

The game is cute and the gameplay is straightforward. I find the wandering monsters to be somewhat boring and too easy to kill. It’s also annoying that the grass and rocks keep respawning even though you’ve just got rid of them. In the end, it’s a classic Zelda - worth getting it if you’re a fan.

Link's Awakening could possibly be one of my favourite Zelda games. I haven't played the original, but I've seen it's very faithful to the original and DX versions. There are small changes to make it relevant with today's technology, for example removing the photography guy because the switch doesn't have a portable printer like the gameboy did.

I really like the direction they took with the art style, being able to recreate what made the original so special. All the characters and enemies looked really cool, it was really fun to meet all of them. The remixes of the original music was all really cool too, adding so much to areas in the game.

The dungeon builder isn't as in-depth as people wanted it to be, I see everyone seems to want a Zelda Maker. However, it was really fun to go through he challenges it gave between each of the dungeons. It added that something extra to the game that I really enjoyed.

If you're interested in playing another Zelda title on your Switch after playing BotW, then this is a must play.

The remake stays true to the original and this is both a blessing and a curse. The diarama like graphics are cute and gorgeous, but are also hindered by blurred edges which I found disturbing at the start of the game. Personally I would have prefered a reimagining akin what A Link between Worlds did to A Link to the Past. Extras such as the dungeon editor are added, but are mostly forgettable.

It's not a very large adventure - I clocked in at 25 hours when beating it - but these play hours yield a high fun factor, more so than other similar games. An often overlooked Zelda game, but it continues the tradition of rich gameplay and being a fun game.

Although there are welcome quality-of-life improvements (for example, you'll spend much less time swapped tools in the menu), this is also the kind of game Nintendo and Grezzo could hammer out in their sleep. Le jeu est un remake pur et dur, l'ajout du mode donjons maker est sympathique rapidement mais vu que rien n'est inédit, on fait vite le tour.

Honestly, the game did not age well at all. Too much backtracking, bland combat, uninspiring puzzles (I mean, how many times did it boil down to "kill everything in this room?) - the game is essentially one big fetch quest. If you look at it this way, all Zelda games are fetch quest - but the 3rd person titles are much more complex in their systems and you get to explore cool, atmospheric places.

I bought a Switch for this game and I sincerely wish that I could give this game a higher rating. In my opinion Link's Awaking on Game Boy was the best part of Zelda (right after Wind Waker), unfortunately I can't say that about the remake. It's still a great game, with lovely graphics, but performance issues make me take one point away.

Love the art style. Probably the only time i've ever thought good job Grezzo. it's one of the better 2d zelda games and they did a great job showing off the original and adding extra collectibles was so much fun for another run through this game. the dungeon maker let me down though

In terms of story, it certainly does not deliver the 'greatest' or most 'epic' Link's adventure. It simply puts Link on an island and your objective is to get out. Along the way, you even ask if this island really exists or is just a dream so it's simple but a bit complex at the same time. Not an epic story, but it's fitting.

I have just 2 main complaints about this entry. The first being the absence of Princess Zelda. She's my favorite character in the series and a LoZ game never feels complete to me without her. But I understand why she has no place here. I'm not a fan-boy to look at that as a flaw. The second and last issue is the framerate. I'm generally someone who tends to avoid talking about minor technical problems but the Switch is a great system and I rarely find fps problems while playing it. It feels odd that a first-party Nintendo title has such a problem.

Overall, this remake is a success. It keeps a nostalgic feel but the visual improvements make it feel extremely fresh. There are people who complain about the game being too short, but this lasted me around 15 hours and then there's also some additional content and even a hard mode to experience. I'd say it has more than enough content to justify its price.

Convoluted, confusing and frustrating. Link's Awakening has not aged well for the modern audience. Nothing is explained well to the player, as someone who has never played a Zelda game before I found myself having no idea what to do, or where to go, if it weren't for guides I would never have finished it, and I'm generally not the type of person to need a guide, but Link's Awakening isConvoluted, confusing and frustrating. Another major issue the game has is performance. The game uses double buffered VSync, which basically means if it drops any frames it'll plummet from 60fps to 30fps (and then back up), and this happens all the time, which makes for a very choppy experience. I honestly expect better from Nintendo.

Where the game shines is visuals, it's a gorgeous looking game with a great art style. It's also top-notch in the audio department. The gameplay is also solid, but tarnished by the performance problems. I found all the boss fights very easy apart from the last one, which was a good difficulty without being cheap.

The game is very short, which was OK for me as I wasn't enjoying it, but it's worth mentioning it's only about 5 hours. I personally rented it and I feel that's the smart thing to do.

One of the most famous and well-received games on the Gameboy is back with a complete remake on Nintendo Switch. From updated graphics to the new quality of life changes to the gameplay, does Link’s Awakening (2019) live up to the original or does it take too many missteps along the way?

Link is sailing across uncharted waters when suddenly his raft is struck by lightning and he wakes up on a mysterious island with a giant egg in the center of it. He meets Marin, a young girl who lives on the island tells Link about the legend of the Wind Fish and how awakening this creature might help him escape the island. Much like the original game, the story is simple and to the point. The new setting that Link finds himself in is very different and almost dream-like compared to other games in the franchise While most of the story is told at the beginning and end of the adventure, there are many small interactions between well-written characters and even touching moments within these interactions. Don’t expect this to be a grand adventure like in previous titles since its story is more like a peaceful and calm dream, which ties heavily into the game’s theme and atmosphere. The story is a fun, bite-sized adventure in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

The gameplay is very similar to past entries that deal with the top-down perspective approach. You go through the world, trying to find dungeons and then solving the mysterious within to get one step closer to your goal of awakening the Wind Fish. This game truly harkens back to the Gameboy days, since you are not given many hints when solving puzzles and I got stumped at least once or twice throughout my 15-hour playthrough. It feels satisfying solving the puzzles and getting to the next part of the game. There was never a time I felt frustrated at any point in the game. The whole experience was nothing but fun from beginning to end. With that said, veterans that played the original might not find much challenge if they remember the solutions due to all puzzles being the same. If I had any nitpick it would be that switching items can be a bit of a pain since you have to contently swap items in a pause menu. It would be nice if they gave the option to swap items using the d-pad instead. A slight annoyance but nothing too major. The only new addition to the game is a dungeon creator but this mode is a little bare bones. You have to collect room pieces throughout the campaign and these pieces can be arranged in any order to make a dungeon. With very limited tools to create with and a lack of online sharing, I could see this being nothing more than a fun little distraction from the main story that you might fiddle with once and never again. Despite these flaws, this does not take away from the incredible light-hearted adventure.

This is not one of the most technically impressive games on the Switch but it does not try to be. The game tries to capture the feeling of playing a Gameboy game with modern HD graphics that we would expect from this console. It runs at a consistent 30 FPS but due to the simple graphics, I’m surprised it does not run at a full 60 FPS. This is combined with the fact that the open world does not look as good as it should due to weird draw distances that make the bottom of the screen blurry when traversing any open landscape. The rest of the game does not have this issue so it’s weird to see such a thing on a simplistic game. The soundtrack is amazing and perfectly captures the essence of a small game like this. I think this game needs a bit of polish on the technical side of things but these small flaws are something you will get used to throughout the course of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019) reminds me why the original Zelda games are such classics and why there is still a place for them next to bigger endeavors like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game has minor presentation issues and some more quality of life mechanics could have been added but this is still a solid game. This game is worth 60 dollars despite its short run time due to the time and effort that was put in this remake. If you’re not a huge Zelda fan, you could wait for a discount but I would recommend a purchase as soon as you get the chance.

    +Great Exploration and Puzzles
    +Great Soundtrack
