To be clear, Suikoden I & II shine even more brightly here than they have for over 25 years. Plus, building up your base is still a blast, and I got the same dopamine hit every time I added someone to my army. The characters and story are still working on a singular, elevated level. I love the look and the sound. But, even this superfan purist wanted a little more care and attention in addressing the legitimate complaints people have about these games.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars finally gives players access to two of the most beloved RPGs of all time once again. It’s definitely a shame that more hasn’t been done to enhance both titles, but there’s a reason why fans still regularly revisit the original games. Both games continue to impress, and every JRPG fan should have played them at least once. Fortunately, that’s now easier than ever. I can only hope that the renewed attention for the series will finally lead to a new game (and no, a mobile gacha title doesn’t count).

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a treat for all turn-based RPG fans, but backgrounds can look a little too smooth and clean.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster offers a nostalgic trip with impressive visuals and engaging turn-based combat. The upgraded features make gameplay smoother, though the auto-save needs work. It's a rewarding experience for longtime fans, especially with the 108 Stars of Destiny to collect again.

After this many years, that Suikoden I & II got remasters is in itself a blessing. That Konami paid attention and added quality of life improvements is testament to the esteem that these two titles hold. Lush visuals over a pixelated palette, UI tweaks and traversal improvements, this is a real love letter to Suikoden fans. There are a few cracks, more so in the first game, but as a package it's easily ignored for the stories and fun that both games bring.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is an exceptional collection of two important JRPGs, including one of the greatest masterpieces of the genre. The gameplay system works well, but the real highlight is the two great narratives that deserve to be played by any fan of the genre.

This remaster enhances the original classics with refined visuals, redrawn character portraits, and a polished UI while keeping their deep storytelling and rich character development intact. The added quality-of-life improvements, a the opportunity to finally play these JRPG gems in Spanish make this edition even more valuable.

The effort put forth by Konami pays off in dividends. The end result is a project that, like another Pixel Remaster project before it, has the best of both worlds. These are games that play and look just like you remembered them, but somehow even a bit better. Slight QOL changes complement, rather than complicate, the gameplay. Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars might be a mouthful of a title, but it’s one that reaches for the stars - and knocks it out of the park.

Bundling up two classic JRPGs and enhancing them in numerous ways including tidying up their visuals and making meaningful quality-of-life improvements, Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a genuine treat for fans and newcomers alike.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is a great excuse to play 2 classics, especially Suikoden II which is one of the best RPGs ever made. Recruiting characters is still extremely enjoyable and it sets it apart from other RPGs so here's hoping for much more Suikoden in the future.

A decent remaster of two great JRPGs that is undoubtedly the best way to play both beloved cult classics if you can look past the cracks.

While Konami only went slightly beyond the basics, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is still a great way to experience two classic RPGs that have aged well and show the series’ former strength.

While I wasn’t fully impressed by Konami’s additions in this remaster collection, I am happy for anyone who can finally access these two classics. The Suikoden series is for those who love political intrigue, gripping storytelling, and a fantastic soundtrack. Suikoden as a series does an amazing job of pulling RPGamers into their war-torn worlds and making them feel invested in what is happening. While I miss some of the quirks of the original localization, such as Jowy having multiple spellings to his name or the Celestial Sword being known as the Sward Dragon Sword (it will always be the SDS of my heart), I cannot deny how much happiness I felt replaying two of my all-time favourite RPGs. Even though this remastered collection is fairly barebones for veteran players, it is absolutely worth grabbing for anyone who has never had the opportunity to play these classic JRPGs.

More could have been done to make Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars a more momentous release for the series’ 30th anniversary. Quality of life additions such as a prettier look and cleaner HUD to the first game in particular could’ve made the two games stand together better in this collection, but two great games from thirty years ago are, unsurprisingly, still great games today. There’s a lot of magic, charm and gusto to recruiting your dozens upon dozens of friends and allies, all in the hope of overcoming a greater, more powerful looming threat. This beautiful but also simultaneously terrifying world full of injustice is incredibly timely for both returning fans and newcomer RPG enthusiasts like myself. So gather your friends; it’s time to take on the world.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars brings the two beloved classics to modern platforms with smart and sensible updates that only reinforce all the reasons the series was so beloved in the first place.

Those very small complaints notwithstanding, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster should still be considered a must-buy for anyone who considers themselves a classic JRPG fan and has even the tiniest amount of interest in the franchise, as this will be the first time that these two games will be available in HD and English for every modern platform (excluding mobile). According to Konami there will also be physical editions for PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, so would-be collectors should take note.

Players have been waiting a long time for a rework of the first Suikoden to immerse themselves in comfortable conditions. This is now possible thanks to this compilation entirely translated into French and equipped with several welcome features. The graphic and sound optimization in HD does not, however, prevent the title from still displaying certain shortcomings in terms of ergonomics, such as the sluggish management of the inventory or the absence of markers that could have guided us in the quest for the 108 (or rather 216) stars.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a production containing two jewels of the history of video games that finally return to our screens and, thanks to the work of Namco Bandai, acquire new lifeblood. To our great joy, a complete and punctual tradition arrives in Italian, allowing anyone to enjoy the original work of the late Yoshitaka Murayama, creator of the saga. The result of these remasterings in HD is good, but does not reach the peaks of recent works such as the remastered of Dragon Quest III, still maintaining an appreciable level also thanks to the effort of Junk Kawano and a soundtrack that is still of the highest quality today.

Although Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is not necessarily the definitive version of these two great games, it is the best possible version to date and, above all, the most accessible.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars combine two incredible JRPGs from the genre’s golden age on PS1, lovingly remastered and improved for PS5 and PS4. They suffer from the same issues many games did back in the day: unwieldy, occasionally grindy, and sometimes obtuse. Still, the package offers fans the chance to experience these lesser-known gems, and both deserve a place in the collection of any fan, even the least bit interested.

What’s left, when you strip back all the improvements and baggage (both positive and negative) of an established title is still amazing. There’s a reason these games used to go for a lot of money on the second-hand market. Suikoden, even after all these years, is still an amazing set of RPGs.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster revives two beloved JRPG classics with enhanced visuals and quality-of-life improvements. While Suikoden I offers a solid, if rushed, introduction, Suikoden II stands out as a masterclass in storytelling, character development, and emotional depth. With strategic combat, 108 recruitable characters, and new difficulty options, this remaster reintroduces a long-lost gem to a modern audience—flaws and all.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster does a nice job at remastering two classic entries that were once absolute references in the JRPG genre. There are a bunch of improvements, such as the noticeable increase in battle speed as well as the ability to easily enable the auto-battle mode. However, the UI still lacks elements to actually make this feel like a revolutionary step-up when it comes to user experience.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster brings back two classic JRPGs that defined an era, though as a remaster, it sticks to the basics with visual upgrades, quality-of-life adjustments, a Gallery Mode, and a few extras. However, these are two deep stories of war and betrayal that are well worth experiencing for fans of classic role-playing games.

The Suikoden series has its good games and bad, but Suikoden 1 and 2 are my two favorites in the series. For those looking to scratch the itch of a classic JRPG, these games will do it. I hope that other companies take notes, as they kept the core game play and didn’t make any major changes to the battle system — I’m looking at you Final Fantasy VII Remake. The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster isn’t perfect though, and Konami should have made a few more quality of life improvements, specifically to the inventory system. The story to both games is there in all of its glory, the second game’s story especially. Overall, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a solid update to some classically good JRPGs!

While their restoration itself leaves a lot to be desired, The Gate Rune And Dunan Unification Wars is still the easiest way to access the first two games in the Suikoden franchise, and despite my many quibbles, the quality of the original titles bears out. That is more than enough to justify this collection’s existence, even if it does feel like a bit of a squandered opportunity.

In spite of all my grievances, these are still two classic RPGs. Suikoden I&II are enormous adventures full of interesting characters to recruit, and epic plots to discover. To be perfectly clear, my final score reflects these games as remasters for a modern audience rather than as games in isolation. I loved the new sprites, and the levels do look better than ever before (even if the aesthetic saddens me). I wish more mechanics had been modernized more than anything else. We’ve come too far to go back to this kind of awful inventory management. But the point remains – this is the best way to play these games on modern hardware. If you simply must experience these games, then Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is the way to do it.

As it stands, this is a package of two great games that is serviceable. Outside of some interface issues that are mostly artifacts of the games' age, there's nothing wrong with Suikoden I and II--in fact, they remain as excellent as ever. But it's hard to get rid of the nagging feeling that this remaster feels uneven between the weirdly contrasting visuals and the general lack of quality-of-life improvements beyond the bare minimum. Suikoden is a phenomenal series that deserves all the love it can get, and with how expensive the original titles have become, any way to let people enjoy them is welcome--but these two games really deserve to be reintroduced with the red carpet, not the tacky doormat.

The fact that modern players now have the option to play through both games with Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a blessing. It helps to demonstrate the progress made between the two games, and coupled with the added features like fast-forwarded battles and a conversation log to track everything, it both streamlines and expands the experience in a way that just wasn’t possible before.
