This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best Resident Evil games ever. By the end of Resident Evil Village, it quickly became my favourite RE game. Only complaint i have is that Heisenberg’s Factory lasted a bit too long and started to overstay it’s welcome. But Heisenberg’s boss fight after it all is so much fun, definitely the best and most fun out of all the fights, Mother Miranda being a close second. They really nailed Ethan in this game, to the point i was rooting for him to get Rose back and make it out alive. The ending was so sad after everything Ethan went through in RE7 with saving Mia and RE8 to save his daughter, Rose. Him slowly turning to mold because his body is now made of it and him sacrificing himself to blow the Village up while Chris, Mia and Rose fly away in a helicopter. Expand

I'm new to the RE universe and used to playing games much more difficult and longer (Souls fan). With that said, after watching way to many streamers play this I decided to make the plunge. Overall I'm satisfied and although I wish it were longer for $60 I've spent more taking the family to the movies for two hours of entertainment.

A great fun game. As a long time fan of the series, this one is very much in line with the campy-action-horror of re4 with some survival elements littered throughout. A fun cast of characters, amazing beautiful scenery, anxiety inducing combat (if you play in hardcore mode,) and truly a game worth playing if that’s your thing.

Resident Evil Village takes whats great about RE4 and repackages it into a current gen experience. A few players will be turned off with the almost RE3 feel of the introductory chapter, but after continuing with the story they will meet balanced game play featuring horror, action, RPG-elements and more.

Sure, alot of new players to the franchise will not feel as at home as I were, but Im a firm believer the absolute majority of players will find this game to be one to remember. By all means not perfect, but a bloody good time - pun intended.

The latest in the most iconic series in video game horror continues to deliver.

At long last the newest installment into the mainline Resident Evil franchise has arrived. Released 4 years after Resident Evil 7 and after 2 remakes it’s back to a brand new story.

Resident Evil is my second favorite gaming franchise and I absolutely loved Resident Evil 7, so I’m very excited to get a chance to talk about it like this.

Full disclosure, I was skeptical about buying this so early, I didn’t know if I was in a place where I felt like playing through a Resident Evil right now, while I enjoyed the castle demo that I played, I wasn’t too sold, but I decided to do it anyway because I guess I felt the need. Boy am I glad I did, spoiler alert for the rest of this review, but I am very happy with this game and I had an absolute blast with the 3 days I spent playing it.

Resident Evil Village take place 3 years after the events of Resident Evil 7, Ethan and Mia now living in Europe with their 6 month old, Rose. You have a cute little intro putting Rose to bed while being able to explore your house and find little callbacks to the previous game (newspaper articles, a Mr.Everywhere figurine etc) and discovering that Ethan and Mia are still haunted by the events of the Baker incident. You’re quickly interrupted by Chris Redfield and some soldiers who shoot Mia, take Rose, knock Ethan out and take you both away. Very soon you wake up and see your transport vehicle was attacked and you make your way to the titular village and he game truly begins.

This game really spends a while making you wait for something to happen, not in a negative way however, it just builds things up so beautifully that you want something to try to kill you to relieve the tension, you always wonder if those noises are enemies nearby or if it’s jut trying to build up more tension and add to the spooky atmosphere.

The game looks amazing of course, the Resident Evil engine continues to impress. The main village itself is absolutely beautiful, it’s a fantastic main area filled with snow and locked doors and plenty of secrets to keep coming back to as you progress throughout the story.

Game-play wise it’s mostly what you can expect if you played Resident Evil 7, aiming and shooting are identical (unless they’re are some intricate details that go over my head) typewriters are back for saving and they look fancier than ever before, goat statues are the new Mr.Everywhere/Mr. Racoon, you even have a car sequence. There are a few things introduced however, such as a heavily revamped crafting system to make healing items and ammunition, a charming little journal to keep track of the events of the story. You can also buy weapons, ammo, upgrades and items from “The Duke” using Lei collected from enemies and found along the way (who even given a cute little reference to the beloved Merchant from Resident Evil 4 if you pay attention)o Nothing huge added, but i don’t think it needed much, if it’s not broken as they say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First - Reviews of this game are suffering from people who outright refuse to engage with the game on its own merits. It is not enough to say "I am upset with the direction of the series." It is reasonable, however, to note that this game might not "be a satisfying direction" for longtime fans. Problem is, it doesn't deserve a deduction in points along with that note. The only place this would be forgivable, is if you are longtime established critic whom people go to for Resident Evil/survival horror commentary. But even then, maybe give the game a fighting chance on its own terms?

Whine about subjectivity all you want. Maybe this is actually a refutation of scored reviews or the sorry state of gaming journalism, but reviewing is a critical thought exercise. You need to consider everything within its own context -- did the "text" (in this case, the game) set out to do what it intended to? Is it entertaining? Do the elements of intertextuality work? Is it scary? Does its world mesh?

To these questions and more, RE8: VILLAGE gives a resounding, if imperfect, yes.

The environments are beautifully realized in graphical quality and detail, but also in design. The way the world opens up is every bit as engaging as the Baker Estate from BioHazard. While VILLAGE of course takes a different tact in establishing tone, it does this successfully largely through its over-the-top locale. We have submerged ourselves in Gothic horror - something Resident Evil has always been taking inspiration from. Vampires are to mansions as mansions are to Frankenstein and zombies are to public buildings. They are tropes of the horror tarot that have been revolving since the 19th century and there are few more gothic settings than the Spencer House in the original Resident Evil. We've just gone whole-hog now. Vampires, werewolves are utilized well, and its nice to see them have a different origin than typical horror fiction tropes.

This game is referencing so much its mind-boggling: Dracula, Frankenstein, Lovecraft, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Chuckie, Children of the Corn, the Wolfman, Van Helsing, and more, more, more. It synthesizes these influences into a coherent "Disneyland" of horror. To tie back to what I started this review with: The game can claim this a success, because the environments and character are fully realized, existing alongside the fictional lineage they are a part of. The world and characters feel like they can coexist. This world now belongs to Resident Evil. And you feel it while you play.

Admittedly, the game leans farther into spectacle than hard character development, but horror should be judged on its atmosphere first and foremost. So, I'd argue this is okay. Rather than the suffocating scary-horror of BioHazard, we spend our time in the cool-horror of VILLAGE, but VILLAGE is not without its terrifying moments.

The gameplay is snappy and appropriately responsive, creating just enough tension in fights to keep you on your toes. The interaction with the game world delivers its own set of enjoyable and satisfying moments. It demands that you engage and pay attention in order to solve puzzles, and oscillates nicely from longer challenges that wrap quickly and shorter ones you need to solve under pressure.

Now for a couple of the things that take away from this experience.

    1. One area - Moreau's - is atrociously underdeveloped and -- honestly -- embarrassing. It is quick, simple, boring, the boss is underwhelming, and some areas are potentially a drag on your time. I managed through luck to squeeze by, but I imagine some folks got stuck on a **** bridge sequence.
    2. Some of the areas could have had a couple more rooms/sections added. I find this is an issue with many "AAA" games -- why not go the extra mile? This game would be a true classic if the castle, reservoir, and various passages contained just a tiny bit more.
    3. Normal mode is a little too easy, but hardcore is embarrassingly unbalanced. The first encounter probably had many people wishing they hadn't pre-ordered or bought the game. I'm all for a challenge, but this isn't that. It is unfair in design and quickly becomes tedious. It needs to be tweaked, especially since its probably the "sweet-spot" difficulty level.
    4. Some gameplay mechanics are explained wrong. You're told to bring food to the Duke, but if you sell him food before you unlock the cooking mechanic (the player doesn't know this is going to happen) those supplies are lost forever.

And that's really it. Everything else about this game is superb. If its a direction thats not for you, thats okay. Maybe look into its influences, give it a shot? Play through with an open mind.

I can't recommend it highly enough to horror fans or fans of Resident Evil.

Each segment doesn't overstay its welcome, the momentum continues. It looks amazing, even on PS4 - and after a while, you even get used to Ethan's one-liners. While obviously not up to the standard of perhaps, Leon in RE4.

Super happy overall, but there's something missing that i can't put my finger on just yet. Perhaps a second play through will distill this.

Intense boss fights, feel like the difficulty was dialled down slightly in order to prioritise the experience. Felt a bit short changed with (the lack of) Lady D, but somewhat offset with the genuinely terrifying escape room style boss. Incredible graphics and a truly horrific/intense soundtrack, my favourite "next gen" title by a mile Expand

    Was?
Jaja, top. Und jetzt geht spielen!

Those seeking a consistent tension may be disappointed, but I am just looking to enjoy a game and have a few scares along the way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Resident Evil village continues to take Resident Evil in a direction that I love. In an over the top, almost silly at times. game that can still actually scare me every now and then. From the start where Ethan's life seems to be going well, to having him lose fingers, happens within about 20 minutes. Ethan is sent to Romania with his wife Mia and his new born baby Rose, but is quickly set back to a terrible sticky mess that he, and his poor hands, have to get though to save his daughter. You're thrown to the wolves quickly and literally with your only "friend" The Merchant Duke to help you. The tall vampire Lady Alcina Dimitrescu, Fish Lord Salvatore Moreau, Puppet Master Donna Beneviento with her puppet Angie, and Karl Heisenberg as the four lords are all interesting, intimating, and most importantly just good old scary. The lords are mirrored with references to a story book Mia reads to Rose, and classics such as Dracula, The Island Of Doctor Moreau, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman (and potentially the invisible man in Ms. Beneviento). Each of these lords naturally have their own areas and bosses to traverse. Most of which it is almost sad to defeat these bosses and progress due to their charm and lore. The gameplay itself is a lot like RE7 but you have more room to move since you're not stuck in a house this time. I never felt too overwhelmed, apart from a few times where there just seems to be a few to many enemies that can take a lot of punishment to defeat and a truly horrifying sight within a basement. The player begins exploring the village before moving on to boss areas. The village has its own little details, secrets, and puzzles that really show the effort and love the team put in. Much to the credit of RE8's marketing team we are all excited to know big vampire momma is the first boss area we explore. Her castle is incredibly beautiful and highly detailed. Right down to the portraits of the ladies and a missing tube of lipstick. The castle itself has a lot of secret areas with a lot of notes so don't feel pressured to get out of there too fast, there's so much to do. Next is Donna Beneviento and her dolls! This area is the most effective in terms of horror content and player discomfort. Be prepared to go at this without any weaponry, and rely on your speed and eye for detail. My girlfriend found this area particularly horrifying due to her fear of dolls and puppets, at some points even covering her eyes while I sped through, which only proves how impactful the area is as she is a huge horror fan. Third is the creature of the lagoon's area, Moreau. He is the least appreciated of the 4 lords and might be the one the player has the most sympathy for. Moreau just wants to impress his mother after all. However, while the area is pretty simple to traverse (minus a VERY large enemy at the start), his boss fight can be incredibly difficult due to his poison damage. Before finally heading off to Heisenberg and his factory, the player is first sent to a Lycan stronghold which has an overwhelming amount of enemies but not without its charms. The factory is the final area before end game. Heisenberg is a very well written character as well as excellently acted by Neil Newbon. While a fascinating boss, the factory is a pain to get through. It has a confusing layout with a lot of turn arounds. Before finally facing the final boss there is a section where you play as Chris Redfield which is very entertaining and easier due to his massive amounts of ammo. There are puzzles all throughout, however for the most part they're pretty simple to solve. Each one looks very intricate and detailed but not a big obstacle. There's a bit of exploration to do in RE8 if you wanna take the time to look but nothing that dampens the story. Overall the two playthroughs I've done so far of RE8 were fun and scary with great villains, fun gameplay, and a story that kept me interested the whole time. Some people may not like the combo of RE4 and RE7, but it feels like the devs put a lot of love and work in which does not go unappreciated. In addition, there's no microtransactions, or DLC's so far! Expand

There were a few things that are a bit irritating in terms of design, as the game treats you as if it wants you to be an action movie hero, but mechanically, doesn't really let you be one. I just love the new RE concept introduced in RE7 - and this one just takes it to another level. It is better than RE7 in almost every aspect. It is not as scary as the previous one (it has only one freaky episode with the doll master boss) but much more action-oriented, which is super cool — no need to count every bullet now, you can simply fight your way through the lycans. Amazing graphics, good story and great maps, I’m really glad Capcom kept the same idea as RE7 because these two games were really good and pretty similar too, I’d love to see a third game to complete the trilogy and even more games like this.

Such a fun game and a weird turn for the series. I didn't like the Ethan from RE7, but somehow they managed to change my opinion of him by the end of the game. The series has been in worse condition story-wise before, so I'm hopeful they will continue to pleasantly surprise me. to me this chapter has made me crazy, and a game really well done. the thing that made me more happy was that they have taken over the environment (or in part) of resident evil 4. good job.The only thing a bit negative is that I lost many hours in figuring out which is the right way to go or in solving some difficult puzzles, but this is the true spirit of resident evil village.

Expand

Charismatic characters, fun gameplay, one of the best re atmospheres and an emotional narrative. The first half is pretty scary, but the second half is action-centred. And thats not bad,it gets the middle point between action and horror, its like 7 and 4 gave birth to this game. Recommended

I was sure that I will buy that game cause the last RE was also great. At Black Friday I took the chance for low money and during the Xmas I’ve started playing. And I have to say. YES it’s a great game. Story and topic is a bit different but that’s no problem at all. It makes so much fun the whole story the artwork and immersion is great. 92/100 points

Resident evil: village is my favorite from all resident evil games. A really good quality, the aim assist is perfect. The characters are amazing, with cool and small details. But the handsome one is Heisenberg, i'm in love with him. He is the special one who game made funnier and fiery. But the one minus is Ethans death. He went through a lot but he received actually nothing. I know thatResident evil: village is my favorite from all resident evil games. A really good quality, the aim assist is perfect. Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
