The gameplay is incredible! If you’re a long time player like me you will love the new combat offerings. Even those of us who have conquered Ultra Hard and are ranked in the UH Arena will still be challenged. The emotional ride is great too! I have not cried so hard (For joy) from a game in my life! I got all the emotional paycheck that a true fan could ever hope for

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

An excellent addition to my favorite series. I love that we get more time with the Quen. My only complaint is at the time of this comment the north aerial capture is still buggy and I can’t 100% without it. The final battle is more than I could have imagined we would ever get and I can’t wait to see how they top it in the next installment.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores provides a decent chunk of new content to the base game, adding a little bit of everything to the already expansive sequel. While Burning Shores possesses its own draws and identity, it also mirrors the previous game’s expansion—The Frozen Wilds, in many ways.

Similar to The Frozen Wilds, this expansion adds:
    -- A level cap increase from 50 to 60
-- A sizeable new region to explore with a distinct theme (volcanic archipelago)
-- A handful of main quests and side quests, with a focus on one of the tribes from the base game
-- Multiple new skills and valor surges (two skills and one valor surge per skill tree)
-- An expansion of Aloy’s spear capabilities and new techniques (including new tools)
-- A couple new enemy types (with apex variants for two of the machines)
-- Additional machine sites for some of the best enemies from the base game
-- A new cauldron to override, along with a couple other returning activities and arena challenges
-- A few new collectibles and many new data points
-- A handful of new outfits and several new weapons, coils, and weaves (all have legendary rarity)
-- A new resource type (for trade and upgrades)

Following the conclusion of Horizon Forbidden West, this expansion sees Aloy travel to the titular Burning Shores, where a new threat awaits. Along the way, the expansion introduces some new characters and companions, while setting the stage for the next chapter of the series.

    The Pros:
-- The map has a distinct look and feel overall, offering an added focus on using both the skies and the sea.
-- The number of added activities and collectibles is not overwhelming, but rather feels like the right amount for an expansion of this size
-- While there is only a handful of quests, each one is memorable and offers a worthwhile reward.
-- The primary draw of this expansion—an epic battle against a reactivated Horus/Metal Devil—lives up to the expectation and takes advantage of the power of the PlayStation 5, while offering a glimpse into what the future of the series may be able to offer.
-- Most of the new skills and valor surges are useful and offer additional variety to the combat.
-- There is a surprisingly large amount of legendary weapons, coils, and weaves in the expansion, these are all welcome additions, especially the coils and weaves.
-- Upgrades for the new outfits and weapons also have more feasible requirements, with more variety to what parts are needed, and most of which are located on the new map (no fireclaw sac webbing, slaughterspine circulators, stormbird storm cannons, or slitherfang earthgrinders are needed).
-- The new cauldron is expansive, and like the cauldrons from the base game, it offers its own unique exploration challenge
-- The primary new machine and its respective apex variant are both exciting opponents and a welcome addition to the already impressive enemy roster
-- The expansion uses certain machines in some rather surprising and refreshing encounters throughout the map

    The Cons:
-- While I would say this is only a minor critique, the use of the Los Angeles setting could have been taken better advantage of with more recognizable locations and unique setpieces
-- There is no Tallneck machine to override, and the map is simply unfogged using normal traversal
-- The functionality of the new Waterwing machine could have been used to better effect, either as just an upgrade to the existing Sunwing, or perhaps turned into a completely original machine with expanded incentive to explore underwater (maybe a submarine of some sort, used to explore underwater relic ruins or hunt Tiderippers)
-- The inclusion of the new skiff vehicle and geysers are nice additions, but feel mostly unnecessary other than used for specific circumstances
-- The new resource, brimshine, is overused for anything concerning the new legendary gear (outfit and weapon upgrades, and trading for coils and weaves)

Burning Shores offers more of what made Horizon Forbidden West successful, while also providing some new opportunities to refresh the gameplay. Although there are a few things that could have been developed further, this expansion boasts a solid helping of content that is worth checking out after completing the base game. For any interested returning players or newcomers, I recommend picking this up with the base game for the complete Forbidden West experience.

I love the little details this game has. You can go back to the Forbidden West area and have small interactions with existing characters. The game presents more opportunities to use your flying mount like a new type of collectable called Areal Capture.

New machines are original and Burning Shores will offer lot of opportunities for high end machine parts retrieval.

To summarize, if you liked Forbidden West, you will like Burning Shores.

A fun (though somewhat short) return to the Horizon world. Pleasantly surprised how relatively small tweaks to gameplay kept combat and puzzles feeling fresh, especially after playing both games through multiple times. And the final battle was heart pounding fun!

Figuring out how to destroy the new machines was as fun as it was when I played HZD for the 1st time. The new skills that they added with the dlc are absolutely badass!!! I didn't mind that it was a bit short, being able to spend just another minute in the world of horizon and sharing in Aloy's story is worth it. I didn't need it to go a certain way because it was not my story, its Aloy's and being able to partake in her story is what I fell in love with when I first played the Horizon series. Expand

A polêmica tão comentada, traz vida para a Aloy que antes parecia tão presa a ser uma heroína sem personalidade e apenas um clone de Elizabeth. The DLC is a full game experience: cut scenes, voice acting, new robots to fight, another Cauldron to explore, and a lengthy boss fight. Best of all, the DLC introduces a fun new weapon. I really wanted more of this DLC to play with the new toys.

I’ve read reports that this DLC is the best looking PS5 content ever, but I didn’t think it looked any better than the base game. This whole cross generation debate is overblown. The DLC does look good and offers up more of the great use of color and light that makes the world of Horizon look better than the real world.

The story is a nice follow on if the base game. Something that bothers me a little is how nice Aloy is to all these jerks. I want her to say, “Don’t call me outlander, you dirty foreigner!” But that not Aloy’s style. She’s a good person and when I had my one chance to choose her reaction, I chose the heart option because I knew it would make Aloy happy. My one gripe is that this DLC needed a second tutorial. I didn’t remember much of any of the controls from base game. My preferred DLC model is actually a smaller stand alone game like Infamous First Light or Far Cry Blood Dragon. Boil down your game to the most fun elements and a story will no padding, and I’ll buy that every time. I understand the need for a DLC here, as the new tools can be brought back to the base game for some overpowered fun.

Full disclosure, my review here has nothing to do with the dollar per hour fallacy. DLC are never as good a deal as the bad game, and that is why I almost never buy DLC. (Frugal is as frugal does.) As DLC go, this is one of the best.

In the end, Burning Shores is incredibly easy to recommend. If you enjoyed Forbidden West or if you’re invested in the Horizon series’ larger story and where it’s headed, the expansion feels unmissable almost to a surprising degree, thanks to its strong story, how well it sets up the future, and the introduction of a great new character in Seyka. All of that is backed up by more exciting combat, engaging open world exploration and traversal, and stellar graphics. The end result? An excellent package that almost feels like it’s too good to be DLC.

Players learn that Aloy is gay or bisexual and there are indeed people in 2023 who have a big problem with that. Although more time or development should be taken for the romance, this DLC was still an extremely strong typical Horizen experience. The graphics and everything that goes with it is just S Tier. The DLC is among the most beautiful games you can find. The end game really shows what the PS5 is capable of. True next gen experience. Don't let the idiots tell you anything, they only hated the game because of the kiss scene. It's just like The last of us. The game was a masterpiece and a lot of people hated it because it didn't fit in their ideology that two women can love each other. Expand

Although, the story could have been longer, with only a few missions until completion. Burning Shores is a near masterclass in post-launch content. It adds new variety to the base game, takes further advantage of next-gen, and introduces characters I'm excited to see in the future. That kind of rant-rate is utter nonsense, and an immature, silly reason to downgrade an expansion pack to a video game. The way that the character is portrayed in the game is not offensive to anyone other than religious conservatives, and the players that are rate-bombing the game because they don’t like the character’s portrayal in the game as it does not match their idea of who the character should be are behaving no better than religious conservatives, a group infamous for throwing fits over anything they deem objectionable in pretty much everything everywhere. This is an incredibly immature response. On top of this expansion back being fantastic, fun to play, and a technological achievement, as well as a worthy follow up to an amazing core game, I am giving this expansion pack a perfect score on purpose to balance out the immature rant-rate campaign going on, carried out by a bunch of whiny individuals who think everything should be done the way they want it to be artistically or else, essentially holding the writers of the video game’s story hostage. A more mature response would have been to either say ‘Oh, well, that’s not what I’d hoped for but it’s a great expansion pack and I really enjoyed playing it’ or if that wasn’t possible for the individual than at least a ‘I don’t like this so I won’t play it’ response. ***eyeroll*** Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never ever pre-order games, especially in the last few years, but I pre-ordered this one. I have loved the horizon franchise ever since I first played it (years after everyone else) and knowing a DLC was coming had me SO excited. I loved the exploration, the small fixes for quality of life and the storyline-- especially the romance!! In the first game, romance wasn't something I could see for Aloy since she had so much growth to do as a person, but through the second game and now this DLC, we see her begin to yearn for those connections she never had. To consider them even with everything pressing down around her was so amazing. And the fact that she's confirmed queer (something I pretty much knew from the start) was even better! To have a strong female protagonist who is unapologetically herself was amazing to experience, and makes me as a queer person feel more seen than ever before. If you haven't played this game yet, RUN to get it! You won't regret it. Expand

Either way I loved the game and the story line. The graphics are amazing. Plus as a gay lady I’m in love with that fact that Aloy has a little gf. Can all the people who are bashing Aloy for being gay not ruin the game for everyone else please? I mean one comment said “don’t teach kids gays are normal” that’s just…. Honestly I have no words for that. As someone who went through so much crap in life just because of who I liked, watching and playing this game actually helped me and made me so happy. There is nothing wrong with Aloy being gay. Love is love, it’s okay to be gay, if y’all don’t like the fact that Aloy can be gay then just choose the nope option and move on. Either way, amazing game loved both of them plus their individual DLCs. Game people keep up the good work. Don’t let these people ruin it for the ones that 1. Love that Aloy is gay or 2. Don’t really care who she likes. People can have their opinions but my question is why do a it matter if Aloy is gay. There are very few gay character out there for gay gamers to play. Most games that are not “choose your own character” you play as a straight man or a straight woman. Straight people are everywhere in games. For once I’m proud that we have a strong leading lady who just so happens to like a strong lady. I’m not say that those games are bad.
But to me, everyone is saying that “ oh it was such a good game and they threw that all away” based only on the fact that Aloy is gay. If I’m interpreting these comments correctly y’all are saying that being gay is not okay. You loved the game UNTIL aloy kisses a girl? But you’re not against gay people? I don’t like to throw out the word homophobic casually but that’s what looks to be happening in this comment section. Anyone who's played all the games, and watched her speak with men, we all saw this coming. Especially after Forbidden West with the zenith. Not to mention Ashly Burch, the voice actor, is openly queer and had a track record of playing queer women in games and animation.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is visually the best game I have ever played, and in terms of gameplay, it is enjoyable for me, although it may not be for everyone. But the story is the biggest weakness of the game, and I don’t think the story will be great in Someone’s opinion and it may just be the difference between those who say it’s mid and those who say it’s bad. But in different ways, this game completely shows off the power of the 9th generation console.

Burning Shores is definitely worth a visit. The story builds nicely, the side quests have nice depth, and Aloy and Seyka may end up forming something more than just a friendship.
