It's not as good as the first one. It is more of the same, a very long expansion four years too late.

A fully realised world with so much openness and physics and unexpectedness and tonnes of content in every corner. By comparison this game is on rails, the dialogue is brutish and rarely interesting.

The locations are limited and have little actual logic in them - why must I continually do one-way things that show no one has ever been here before, and yet apparently there are people everywhere who must have needed that path. Why do dwarves build extremely complicated machines that DO NOTHING? Why are deserted areas full of lit fires? The walking around is frustrating. What can I go off that ledge? Why can’t I climb that tiny snowbank? Why can’t I get over that tiny branch? Why must I spend half an hour going around?

Enemies spawn in front of you and then disappear as soon as killed. Loading zones appear every 100m as you crawl through gaps. It’s just all dumb and this breaks the immersion continuously and destroys what story there is. Even the dialogue is so stupid and simple. It’s for kids. It’s like a 90s platformer in 3D.

Most people are rating this game based on the name alone, this game is no better than the previous game, except with more cinematic’s and even on a PS5 it doesn’t even look any better than the previous game, too much walking, talking, and cinematic’s, they are charging $74.99 for these games, they really have to do better, maybe Forspoken will be the GOTY, it’s definitely not this one.

I mean if they changed the name to Dodge of War I'd understand because that's all your doing in most fights. the same Draugers, and overpowered spearmen that kill the GOD OF WAR with one hit is ridiculous.

The characters talk too too much, I'm trying to search for stuff or look at clues and they basically give the whole area away "look at this, look at that" "let's try this or that" In most battles all they're doing is putting so many enemies on one screen that you can't possible parry, dodge and attack all so you die over and over until you get the timing down etc, I'm over it... playing the last game made me feel like this is a long version of some DLC

Atreus and Angraboda (however you spell it) interactions were forced and corny, riding a yak collecting fruit....bro!? I'm trying to finish this game but every time I pick it up, I feel like I've done all this already 1000 times

I played 3 hours and got bored, so $20/hour.
    Dialog is banal, combat repetitive.
    Touchy-feely no workie.
It's a B-movie on rails with underwhelming combat in the middle.

The most overrated game in the world.
This game no more than 7 out of 10, the same elements from the previous game,
Slow and boring gameplay, mediocre story, bad AI enemies, repetitive enemies.
I don't understand how people praise this boring game.
Not worth the $70 price, better to wait for a price discount or not buy this joke at all.

In 2023 we're not used to this linearity. Feels like walking through a tunnel with too much storytelling. Also, the puzzles are based on luck in finding the solution, not intelligence. Very, deeply boring

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly disappointing and complete rubbish. It has been a long time since I was so disappointed and even more so with a franchise that has been part of my life. Santa Monica sold us one thing and what we played was another. We were promised Ragnarok, what we got were a couple of small battles in the final chapter, and the worst final battle in the history of the franchise. This game laughs at the oldest fans and pisses on Norse mythology. Cory Barlog and Santa Monica forgot what made GOW great and what made Kratos an excellent character. It wasn't his violence and his desire for revenge that we liked, but how he was sinking deeper into his misery while we controlled him and thought: this isn't right, but it's super epic. And this only for trying to forget the sins he committed. Sins that are completely forgotten in Ragnarok, and leave Kratos as a mere "godkiller". But Kratos is not the only one destroyed in this game, Atreus was too, who throughout his path in the story does not represent at all what would end up happening at the end, all the time we played with him, in the end it was worthless. Freya - A boring character whose ending is literally the same as Ellie's in TLoU2. Jormungandr is completely left out of the background here. Fenrir is useless, Freyr is useless, Angrboda is useless, Surtr is also useless, Sif is also useless, Thrud is also useless, "Tyr" is also useless, so many characters completely wasted. And poor Thor who is made into a family drama, and then his two battles are exactly the same. How cool it would have been to see Jormungandr and Thor fight and then Kratos and Atreus would join them in the fight and kill Thor on top of his arch-enemy, but no, Santa Monica wanted to play save. Then we have the most **** up character at the end: Odin, who was on his way to being almost equal to Zeus as a villain, being a manipulator and megalomaniac, and in the end he ends up being **** suffering the same treatment as Thor and his 2 identical battles, but this time in the end nobody wants to kill him, so a dwarf kills him, literally. Anyway, first I was going to give this game a 7, but then I thought about the hours I spent in slow and boring chapters, with repetitive puzzles and enemies, that I couldn't even do the combos I could do in the previous one, so I decided not to. 4/10 is correct. The soundtrack is ok, and the graphics are spectacular, but, as a GOW fan since I was 12 years old, I can affirm without fear of being wrong that this is without a doubt the worst game in the series. Something that also hurts me is that the ending is so open and ridiculously vague, that there is no foreshadowing of the next thing to come in the saga. But I'm telling you, neither the Egyptians, nor the Japanese, nor the Celtics are going to save this franchise unless Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studios and Playstation recover the magic of the previous game. They are not going to do it because this Nordic saga will surely sell like 50 million, so for me this franchise is dead, as Kratos should have stayed. All in all, a big piece of **** Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although it is fairly cutscene heavy, the game starts out in the right direction almost immediately uniting you with both friends of old, and foe alike. The combat feels almost identical, however they decided to take away all the moves you learned in the last one only to have you earn them all over again, minus the few that they removed from the game which I honestly felt was a mistake. I honestly feel like the combat was better in the first one, but the transition moves are a nice addition and so are the blue circle parries. They give the combat a bit more of a personality. All the while they attempted to make an upgraded system for gear this time around but it still feels incomplete as they don't give you enough good materials for you to be able to level all your gear up. So what happens is you level the gear you like playing with and that takes away from the ability to level up others that are further behind to the point where there's just no point to change gear and try a different style. essentially you'll always have one or two pieces of gear that are better than the rest and it just doesn't feel rewarding enough to want to go back to try another. Lastly, the game forces you to use Atreus for large portions of the game and they're just so annoying that I couldn't help but turn the game off every time I'd get to one, and it would take me days before I would want to play it again. Even worse is when Atreus goes and meets Angrboda, you spend a solid hour or more riding a yak picking fruit. It's boring, and you literally don't learn anything new. It just goes over everything you've already learned and all of the wasted time picking fruit could easily been removed from the game and simply been a cutscene. It honestly felt like they just added them to break up the monotony and i hated every single minute of it. Thanks to Atreus I will never play through this game a 2nd time. I bought this game for God of War which is Kratos and I simply can't push through the annoying Atreus parts which essentially makes this game unplayable for me which means I wasted my money and have no choice but to rate this as such Expand

    Bigger is Not Always Better
Let me start by saying this was a GREAT Game. God of War (2018) is one of my favorite games of all time. Ragnarok was a great game, but not the masterpiece that 2018 was. God of War 2018 was art. This game was not art.
The story in this game was strange. It was overly long and drawn out in some sections, while being too slight and shallow in others.

Characters and backstories were introduced and expanded, and then never re-visited. This game was not directed by Cory Barlog, and it seems to be missing his finer touch. I have finished the campaign and yes the game is longer than 2018, but since the storytelling was a bit uneven it also feels "shorter" or "lighter" than the first game.
My biggest gripe about this game is how certain story elements from the first game are completely changed or ignored in the name of "setting your own destiny" in the second one. This is an interesting idea, but knowing that certain story parts of 2018 are ignored in Ragnarok makes the big reveals in 2018 lose their power. It deflates the story of the first game because the big moments don't actually carry into Ragnarok the way you thought they would. This feels lazy to me and gives the impression that the writers wrote themselves into a corner and could not get out of it. Again, I wonder how much Barlog's lack of direction played a role here. This game felt much less like a labor of love and more like a video game.

The level design was also strange. Yes they were visually breathtaking. No argument here! Wonderful! However, they felt very linear. Very constructed. Each level is a series of separate rooms that require you to slide through cracks in the wall that mask loading times. This disrupts your traversal and makes it constantly feel like a video game. Again, missing Barlog's love of the series makes Ragnarok feel more like a video game and less like a wonderful story.
I found myself getting turned around or lost several times throughout this campaign. This can of course be linked to my incompetence, but I never remember this happening during 2018. There were also puzzles to solve and chests to open that required tricks I never would have figured out if I hadn't gone to YouTube. I never had to do this in 2018. There is a line between "engaging to figure out" and "cannot be figured out" that 2018 walked so well. This game unfortunately misses that line at times.

The level-up process was also very strange. The load-out menu has been completely changed. It is annoying and cumbersome. I often found myself accidentally closing out the menu when I was just trying to go back one section. Relics and runes are hard to understand because you can only use a few at a time rather than spread them out across your armor. The load-out menu also looks cramped and poorly designed. Armor does not show all its stats on one screen, you have to scroll and then it reorganizes the armor based on strength. It is very annoying and hard to understand. Minor, but certain words in the menu are abbreviated rather than spelled out. This takes you out of the game experience. And what if new played don't know what the abbreviations stand for?

Think I will go back to playing Ghostwire Tokyo, which at least had some cultural consistency. But then the GOW franchise as a whole has a problem deciding what it wants to be. In a way the paint employed by Angrboda is symbolic of what happens when you randomly apply different colors. You don't get art, just an aimless mess. Here in the last boss fight, it's like you are fighting with mini boss from a random anime game.

The entire game you only get one new weapon which is absolutely disappointing. The game is joky and it has lost its serious tone. 50% of the game is with Atreus and it's very meh. Is this even God of War? They have ruined the franchise. Also when we talk about Dragons, Nidhogg is the first thing that comes to mind. This dragon is so powerful that Kratos needs to activate his whole power to be able to killing it. The design and the fight itself is very weak and washed.

The inside of Asgard is very disappointing and it's like a generic village of Assassin's Creed. You can't even compare it to that glorious and crazy Olympus that they made in God of War 3. The Ragnarok itself with all its hype is very disappointing, rushed and generic. They really dropped the ball in this God of War.

The old greek God of War trilogy is remained the best and i don't need to see another God of War anymore after this mediocrity.

The game will sell a lot, and they will make a new GOW game 5 years later and everyone will forget what a terrible abomination they created back then. I'm just not sure there is a way back for SSM after what they have done.

Everything was subpar compared to the previous game. There are a lot of subtle things that made the overall atmosphere out of place.

Mimir... he was doing the same as before, just more of it. It became boring. He had zero substance to what he had to say and also the mystery is lost, like writers' block assaulted the story writers.

They added a lot of things/variety from the previous game, that wasn't needed at all. Atreus wasn't annoying, he was just plain naive. Atreus was dethroned by Freya as the most frustrating/annoying sidekick, like an old hag who has to run her mouth no matter what. Angrboda... is the TLOU2 kindergarten element of the game, out of place, unnecessary, ruined the overall pacing.

Parts where you had to go with Atreus... like someone was sleep deprived and forced to create that part of the game. Unnecessary, filler content.

Where is the violence? Why is Kratos acting like a lapdog instead of a rabid dog? Why is he swallowing his pride and endure all kinds of trash from retards? Why can't I butcher down I don't like and put the Disney squirrel in a bag, kick it into the nether, then lie to Atreus that Ratatoskr left because he was looking for the ultimate acorn tree?

The new weapon? Like you are fighting with a needle. Old weps have been mutilated too. The boring aspects and runics are left in, the cool ones removed or modified to be uncool.

Lots of repugnant characters. Mostly uninteresing new monsters, borderline annoying little retardations one hitting you and the like. Goofyness maxed out, violence zeroed.

Zero chance to shape the main plot thread, maximum linearity.

    Berserkers? Filler bosses.

I just don't like when someone forcible defecates down in my throat. This fu**ing with the fanbase thing is the latest norm and to be honest quite dispiriting. There is enough evil sh*t going on in the world, but now that it is also making rounds in gaming space is something that is not taken lightly. AAA games are dead. GOW as a franchise got zeroed for me. I will not replay this abomination that's for sure, and I'm not even sure I'm gonna finish the game. I'd rather play the previous game another time.

All the negative reviews are the real thing. This game was made by incompetents or the same people and deliverately made it terrible.

Words like yep, yeah, kinda, sorta, pretty are used just like in the modern day. This is a strong contrast versus the original trilogy, and 2018's God of War.

Casual writing can have its place to break the tension or as comedic relief, but in Ragnarok the villains, main characters and side characters all engage in this kind of dialogue, making everything feel constantly comedic.

The graphics are gorgeous and the combat remains as good as in the previous game, but a game this focused on dialogue and story leaves ultimately little of value when the writing fails this much.

Devs need to stop catering to the lowest common denominator and realize that most people can actually grasp very basic logic in puzzle solving. I didn't like the 2018 God of War game. They stripped away so many gameplay mechanics from the og. GOW games and didn't replace them with anything new. I also didn't like the story because it seemed poorly written with a forced character arch for Atreus and with a boring Kratos. This game is just a total rehash of that with similar flaws and full of reused assets.

I really liked the previous work and thought that it would bring about breakthrough progress, but I was disappointed. In the same situation as the previous work, I was very upset that the decryption and map running became more and more. It seemed that I was playing with the Assassin's Creed. It was strange that many of the materials were reused in the plot arrangement.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]
