This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "I gotta find Yennefer, and then maybe the story will devolve into something more than fetch quests"

    2 hours later
"Ok, now I gotta find Ciri because she's in really big trouble, and then maybe the gsme will have an interesting dynamic between her and Geralt"

    5 hours later
"Hendrik probably knows where Ciri is. I should go find him"

    6 hours later
"The Baron seems to know where Ciri went, but I need to find his family before he tells me anything."

    8 hours later
"Oh, so Ciri was in Novigrad. I should probably find Triss . She lives there and can probably help me find Ciri"

11 hours later "Dandelion has something to do with all of this, so maybe I should find him."

And to find him you gotta go find 5 of his **** girlfriends and talk to each and every one of them, each one more boring than the last.

This is how my experience with The Witcher 3 has been going so far. Its always throwing more fetch quests at you. Despite the interesting side quests and Witcher Contracts and an outstanding world, the game's pacing is all over the place, the combat is Ass Creed shallow, and the game has way too many technical issues on ps4 which are backed by extremely clunky controls and robotic animation during dialogue. I, personally, will never understand the fanfare behind this game and why its been praised to the heavens, bug I can see a good game in this
package which is why the rating is a 7. Play it if you're a fan of the books, or if you'rethe kind of player that can lose him/herself in a gorgeous open world like this one and doesn't feel bored after dozens of fetch quests in story missions, but don't go in there thinking you'll something incredible out of it. Maybe the next hours carry more interesting story beats, but I, personally, am not ready to sit through so much monotonous **** to find out.

The story starts with a slow build and overstimulating tutorial which starts the trail on rocky footing. I learned most of my basics while in the middle of a forest between side-quests, which may be the best part of the game.

The characters are well designed and the world is well planned, it's just a shame the same isn't said for the basic mechanics of the game. The controls and character movement feels loose, travel and interaction with the world is unpolished at best, and combat is nearly a nightmare.

Perhaps i'm better off with 2015 goggles without current greats like "Spiderman" and "God of War" to compare it to, but maybe it's time for a sequel and tighten up the loose bolts on this nearly immersive game.

I see games in a different way to most. A lot of people see story in graphics in games as important, sometimes more important than anything else. I'm not like that at all. I see graphics and story as secondary features something that's nice to have in a game but absolutely not necessary. In terms of the gameplay the crafting system seems to be very promising if not a bit overwhelming. The combat is alright but doesn't seem to be great at rewarding skillful plays with parties and whatnot, it's mainly just using signs and then mashing x. The graphics and story are amazing but as I said I don't find that quite as important. The music is also good. In terms of enemies there's a massive variation, obviously, and each feels unique, although some attacks aren't telegraphed too too well. I have 2 gripes with the camera:1 the lock on mechanic in this game is the worst of any game I have ever played. I'm not exaggerating at all it is **** I could do a better job than them and I'm one person as a low level programmer but I genuinely could. 2 the camera seems to love geralt back. It gets a bit irritating that geralt takes up half the screen, especially when the FOV of this game is so small. The camera does go back for combat but I wish we had either a wider FOV or the camera was just pulled back a bit. It makes the character feel clunky. The side quests are well done but another issue I have is the white dotted line that leads you everywhere. I won't cover it but game makers toolkit has a great video on why minimaps suck.

In conclusion this feels like a massive game that has potential but I think a few things were dropped for other things that in my opinion are of less importance. But as I said I haven't gotten too far in the game so my review may change

I would have been furious if I had paid a lot for the game on pre-order rather than picking it up second hand to play during lockdown. Despite those points it was still enjoyable to play through, some very likable characters, fun puzzles and some moments where I was laughing out loud. It's one that will go into my collection rather than being sent straight onto the resale market and if the studio produce another follow-up, I would play it. Expand

It's just disappointing. I can adjust to new controls when they aren't that bad but these ones were impossible to get use to because they are so obscure. When your swimming under water you hold circle to surface. CIRCLE! It's X in every other game in the world but it's circle in this game. Story is quite good. Downsides are missions have to high level requirements as it takes for ages to earn enough levels to do them. So you basically do 1 story mission, several side missions and stuff then another story mission. Why are sidemissions so forced in this game rather then just make them optional? This makes it hours in-between each story mission. Every single fight is like this. The boss fights all have health regen. Like all of them. It's annoying when you have no idea how well a boss fight is going. Am I half way through? Am I doing well or is he gonna fill his health bar 3 more times. The odd boss is alright but every single one? Why.... Expand

However, the game still gets a 7. Ultimately, the gameplay is 20% dialogue, 20% traversal, 60% combat. The dialogue is great but its not like this is a CRPG of old which provides many branching decisions. The world is beautiful and full of lore and consistency in world building, but the traversal is not involved whatsoever. The combat is very clunky.

This is a looong game, and the gameplay is the main focus. So while the writing is exceptional, I can't give this game more than a 7 given how poor the gameplay is.

I kept seeing the hype about the game, but didn't feel that excited myself. Anyways, I decided to get the game since there weren't much games out lately.

I've played lots of JRPGs and some pretty complex ones, but the Witcher 3 has to be the most overwhelming experience I've ever had getting started. There were just too many tutorials one after another that seemed to never stop. This was amplified by the fact that the font is incredibly small!!! I have a big tv and its still small! This is very annoying. The user interface is also not very organized and confusing to manage for new players. After awhile, I started getting used to it, but it never felt intuitive. Another huge issue for me is the controls. The controls feel really awkward and I was constantly pushing the wrong button. Also, picking up materials was extremely annoying as it was hard to read what you are picking up and you have to angle the camera at just the right point. The character's movement also felt sluggish and awkward, like controlling a big semi. I also wish the minimap could be enlarged as opening the main map everytime to see the bigger picture was frustrating. All these things were annoying but could be forgiven if the game was actually fun and interesting, but I didn't enjoy the combat because of the clunky controls. Also, the story wasn't that interesting. Just lots and lots of talking. And the dialogue wasn't captivating, just boring and put me to sleep. Lots more issues, but you get the picture. One thing I liked about the game was the music. You really felt like you were in a faraway land. Also, the game has an incredible amount of detail. The problem was at times it felt too overwhelming. I think they put too much into the game. It would've helped to focus on certain elements and cut some things out. I think people who enjoy western rpgs will really like this game, but gamers who don't like going out of there way to learn how to work the game on their own and want intuitive controls and clear and easy to understand tutorials will not enjoy this game. This game is for the most hardcore RPG players.

Some of those choices were good and some not so. I had the PC version and while my PC is not high end it is pretty decent, certainly more than what was required to run. Unfortunately I had to run the game on very low settings with virtually every feature turned off and still had frame rates that often dipped below 10. Is this the fault of the developers to make something so demanding or me for not having the latest high end computer; errr no, just choices they made. Still some optimization would have been nice.

I was not a fan of constant cut scenes, but that was a concept choice. I did not like that there were virtually no quests/contracts that were straight forward. Every single quest could not be completed because to do this quest you needed "A", but the person who had "A" would only give it to if you did something for them. To do that for that person you needed to do something else for someone else. Every single time, again and again and again and again and again and again. I am quite certain there is not a single npc that can use the toilet unassisted. How are they even alive when I suspect they need help breathing. There are a significant number of issues with quests which make them impossible to finish; which increases frustration with the quest issues. Ever had to give up your weapons and all of your abilities just to enter some area where you know you will have to fight enemies, well in this game you will. Trivial quests can take hours. Sometimes getting a lot of bread is just that, it is not an epic quest that takes days to complete, there has to some events that are not epic.

This game is epic but it is rather like building the Sistine chapel and forgetting to put doors on it. Just because you build something that is so great you still need to get little things right. After playing this game for over 110 hours there are still many quests I did not start, partly because I was simply tired of the endless Brobdingnagian quests. It was a relief to finally finish this game. Furthermore, I find I have absolutely no desire to replay this game. The choices you make in the development of Geralt have little to no effect on how the game plays out, so why would I start over, it will just be the same.

I found the class, Witcher, was trivial. Anyone who used any weapon could have done as well, possibly better since it's often impossible to use anything but weapons in combat as witcher abilities are easily disrupted. Mages have significantly more power and the witcher comes across as a fighter/flunky. This game is optimized for consoles. As such, I found the controls for the PC clunky at best, menus are a labyrinth to navigate. There are choices of what you will say in conversations but often not what you intended in terms of results.

This game is huge in scope, very detailed in design. The story has interesting moments but they are often overshadowed by trivial quests. There are however issues with many quests. There is little to no optimization so expect brutal frame rates that make the game choppy and unpleasant. Menus are frustrating and overly complex. Watching Geralt do some ridiculous spinning pirouette again and again makes you realize this is a really slow attack, shouldn't sword attacks be fast and precise. "Can't you just stick him with the damn sword". It's like a 6 year old's idea of what sword fighting is. I realize that there are fan boys who will love this game unconditionally regardless of its issues. This game is superficially pretty but the underlying game mechanics are flawed, clunky and frustrating. Yes after 4 hours I can imagine many people think this is a perfect game, play for 100 hours then write a review, your opinion will likely change.

I'm not going into what the Witcher 3 is about, or how you progress in the game. You can read 99% of the reviewers describing of what this game is.
Instead, I point out obvious and not so obvious issues.
Let's start with the menu system. While it's not the worst, neither great. For example, if you enter the inventory (key: i), it takes 2 steps to get out. The Witcher's inventory is also quite disorganized. Your weapons and armor plus potions are lumped into one screen, while other items you collect are under other tabs. Looking at the items you pick up, is confusing and that little yellow star indicating the newest item is barely visible or completely invisible if the item is yellow. Most of the time it's hard to make out what exactly I picked up, especially looking at the herbs and miscellaneous items, because the icon is small and after a few hours, your inventory fills up to a point, where you loose track of what you have or what you should do with.
Trying to pursue to make one specific sword, armor or potion could be frustrating and tedious, so best advice is to pick up everything. I mean everything, even a rotten piece of meat or a broken fishing rod. You are going to spend a good amount of time of picking up everything that is pickable. If you thought Dragon Age: I was bad with herb picking, you ain't seen nothing yet, until you play this game.
Actually the title should have been Witcher 3 : Public Waste Management.
Another issue has to be the money system. You are not going to have a lot of money throughout the game. You are going to spend it on repairing your sword and armor after every 10 enemy you fight. At boss fights, your equipment will brake and your potions will run out. Sound challenging - yes, but plan to visit a black smith in about every 20 minutes and spend enormous amount of money on repairs. You found a unique sword and armor? You may consider finding another one, instead of repairing it. Kinda makes the rune stones almost useless and equipment with sockets for them.
    Potions.Equipment
I have 2 different potions i can use during traveling or combat, but I can switch them out, if I access my inventory, which as I said, involves hopping through 3 different screens.
Why not just let me equip at least 10 of them? I got 10 numbered keys on my keyboard. Why the redundancy and the immersion braking by navigating through menus while in combat?
    Combat:
Maybe it's only me, but blocking is almost useless. Most people will not block, because it can cause plenty of damage anyway, or stagger. I mean my level 12 witcher staggers from a level 1 bandit. So why should I even bother blocking, if I can just roll around? So they made the blocking another useless function, and with it, the whole parrying and counter attack options as well. Now, my old and experienced witcher relies on rolling around the ground left and right and its sword skills consist just a little more than whirlwind cuts and then roll. Spin around again with the sword, roll away quick.
I'm not sure what happened, because blocking/parrying/countering worked quite well in Witcher 2. They just dumped the whole thing, or is it bugged?
I also noticed, that even if the enemy doesn't hit towards me, the hit still counts? For example, a wolf was biting towards me, so I side stepped. It bit into the air, but apparently I lost health, like it bit me directly.
So now, I don't side step. I only roll and stab. Stab, stab roll. Roll roll stab. Rinse and repeat, if I want to live and win.
    Bugged or a design feature?
    Bugs and glitches.
This may be temporary, but they still exist.
    1. On shores, if I get off the horse, sometimes Geralt starts swimming in an ankle deep water. Kinda funny, but if you got enemies around, you are dead.
    2. Re-loading a quick save can have various effects. For example, you can can't open the same chest or various items missing from the ground. You use your witcher senses, but the items that were highlighted before are gone. Or the chest won't highlight anymore.
Or you can't complete a mission, because the mission specific item is gone. I couldn't free a jailed person, because the key disappeared upon re-loading the game.
    3.
    Bugged, stucked animations, clipping issues.
There are certain lootable boxes, that can't be looted, because it's under other items and the "loot" text doesn't appear, no matter how you turn towards it.
Geralt puts away the sword if it fights an enemy, which can disappear and re-appear. Like a wraith or a ghost. This can be a pain in the butt, because that one second could cost your life.

Despite the whole 'graphic downgrade' some players have been miffed about, the visuals are still pretty good. What's unfortunate though is the actual game play. Story's still more or less engaging though.

    Pros:

    > The subject matter of the stories and quests are pretty gritty. Some are humorous - See: cheese mages, tyromancy - and it balances out the game. My friend didn't like this though so it may be a con for some if you dislike Fable-esque, cheesy humor.

    > Quests. Quests Everywhere.

    > Massive variation of items.(also a bit of a con, explained below...)

    > Extensive lore and 'collectables' for fellow hoarders.

    > I see a lot of negative reviews about Gwent, the card game within the game, but I think they're pretty fun? They also allow item hoarders to try and gather all of the cards. Art on the cards are gorgeous to boot.

    > Gives just enough good loot to keep things interesting.

    Cons:

    >Already seen this plenty but just to cover the bases - tiny, tiny tiny tiny font. It's still kind of hard to read even on a 74" flat screen, and the font's on maximum size! How many wolf's livers do I have? is that 80 or 50?

    > Massive variation of items....stuck in a clunky and disorganized user interface. It's listed chronologically rather than by type (i.e. herbs in one chunk, runes in another, etc.) so you need to do a lot of scrolling to look for things.

    > Don't expect Geralt to jump off a 4ft ledge and survive. You get used to it as you play but I died several times simply due to being pushed off small heights (most of which were less than his own stature!) by enemies at the very beginning of the game. It still happens sometimes but it becomes expected.

    > Movement mechanics of Geralt/Roach (his horse)/anything is very clunky. There's no precision whatsoever, so when you're trying to loot a tiny box for a quest...well, it gets tedious pretty quickly. Best not play this game after other titles that put a lot of effort into sprite movement (i.e. assassin's creed, Prototype, etc).

    > Map is a lie. You can only stray a certain distance away from the main trails and roads before you hit the end of the map and are redirected back to whence you came from. If you enjoy extreme open-world experiences like in Fall Out, Skyrim, or Just Cause, you might feel restricted.

    > Small deathtraps everywhere. There's little nooks in the map that get Geralt stuck ( in some cases attributed to poor sprite recognition?). There was one pit in the bogs near a quest route which was just deep enough for Geralt to not be able to jump out of, but shallow enough to have him violently twitch between a state of drowning in bog water and walking. It's not an obscure location in the map, either. Had to reload to a prior save to get out of that mess.

    > This is a neutral/con type of thing for me. Leveling up is very...very slow. Many main quests require hours of leveling up before you can even hope to beat the boss. It's nice to feel immersed in the world, but when in a more impatient mood, not being able to see the follow-up story for another few days actually pulls me out of the world.

There's more but I'm nearing the word count limit. I hope these things were at least somewhat insightful. Despite all the cons I've listed out though, it's not a bad game! I would wait until the price drops though if you're more of a casual gamer, or don't have any investments in the actual Witcher franchise.

All that was missing is to feed me with epic story unfolding AS IM LOOKING for Ciri. But it never arrived. After 20 hours, I'm sick and bored of it. It goes nowhere. Just another fetch quest game to "2 min cutscene" to the next 1000 fetch quests until next cutscene that is useless.

On the other side, the combat and the control frankly blow. The enemies have poor AI, are generally leashed, and are rather repetitive and uninteresting overall.

The wealth of items and crafting materials to my personal taste are a bit of a chore as well. If you love spending time on such things you will be well rewarded. Otherwise....

I played initially on Death March, and the challenge was real enough but pretty easy to negotiate if you fought near your level. Eventually I set it all the way to casual, which was the best way for me to enjoy the game, since it is not a tactical or action masterpiece but any lights.

Homosexual themes in DA: Inquisition? Forget it. In the Witcher 3 you're tasked to kill a stillborn turned into a monster (also a product of home violence) few hours in.

So, what's wrong? Basic gameplay mechanics are literally broken. The controls on PS4 are jerky, sluggish and imprecise to say the least. The menus are also hard to navigate, especially if you want to do something quick. Combat would be fine, but weak animations and omnipresent framerate drops make it more of a struggle than fun. To sum up, gamplay and the overall feeling of the game is very poor and, for me, gamebreaking.

For the record, I'm from Poland, so I have every reason to praise this game as a national product. But I can't. Sunked **** of time in Mass Effect, DA: I, Bloodborne, so I may be spoiled by "western RPGs". But at least they all got the mechanics right. I get the feeling that the Reds were too ambitious here and I have a bad feeling about Cyberpunk making the same mistake.

    * The witcher sense mode combined with the so-so control scheme AND the unresponsive "press x to examine" is just a chore. I hate every part of the game that tells me to search an area using my witcher senses and there are a lot of them.
    * The durability system where you have to find a blacksmith to constantly repair is tedious, as blacksmith vs game area ratio is stupid.
    * I once spent two hours in fallout new vegas, clearing out an area of monsters that were far above my level. I got something for it in the end. There was excitement and a sense of reward. In witcher, even if you breath in the main quest, you get experience. If you complete a side quest (they ARE repetetive) you get less rewarded. I would've prefered less quests and more reward.
    * The game does everything for you. Having the minimap tell you where to go everytime makes the game more dumb than it should. Where bloodborne didn't tell you anything, witcher tells you everything. To the point you stop reading uninteresting dialouge and just follow the yellow dot.

The game is beautiful, well crafted but is lacking something that a guy like me, who has a family and limited amount of time to play, appreciates most in a game. It's not that fun. I keep playing but I'm not sure why anymore. Most of the frustration I guess comes from long loading times and the general awkwardness of the game. You constantly start-stop, getting stuck, go from A to B only to go to C and back to A and then to D. Oh my god. I love RPGs. This is something else.

I missed a better prologue within the quests, special after you have already spoken to the person instead you hear always " what do you want" a bit lame for my taste. The quests are good as well for the story some of it special with some characters from the past, because you find it out after you meet the person. So it's sometimes hart do understand what happened in his past if you have not played the first and second game.
Next would be that it takes quite long to build up your abilities, takes ages to gain points at the start.
To follow up the story you have to sort out the secondary quest as well, because if you don't something is not more available later because you are above the level you reached, so you get easy lost to do that.
Weapons and Amor nice that you can get those, somehow. You need to search all over the map to find those diagrams to get them as well you need to find the blacksmith to make them, so you are again back in line to find those, in the meantime you are able to build up your level and when you found the blacksmith, your level is above the amor that you will need to find the enhanced diagrams. So this can be a pain, as well you have to wait to get to a certain level to do that quest to get those diagrams. Or you cannot kill the creatures because your level is to low???? Most of Velen are to high on your level to fight as well in Skyling? Sorry if it is wrong!! But if you looking for Ciri there, is a lot that you actually cannot help to solve quests to earn money because again" your level is to low! So not much you can do just run away. And go back later.
So i missed a bit more in that game, i still playing it so i hope i don't lose the fun before quitting it because it gets boring. Well there is a lot to do and to explore that is nicely done, no comments about that. But i still miss something somehow. I know everyone is different and has other expectations to like a good game, but this is not the best sorry! Not close to skyrim or oblivion, those are great games. I like that it is a story of witchers and sorcerer as well have some nude scene with lovestory in it.
It would have been great if there have put more details in this game, more character more options more prologue.

Okay I've only played this game for less than 10 hours yet I don't think anything will change my mind, this game is average. Despite the good parts of it, there are some serious flaws there which ruins it.

First of all, the UI design is the worst I've ever seen, it is so awkward I could barely keep playing. Take the shop interface for an example, there is no way to quickly switch from your items to vendor's items, when you sell something, it left a hole there which makes navigating really weird, it's hard to explain, they really didn't optimize the UI, and the rendering time of map, items are ridiculously slow, 2 secs I think. The task tracking is a disaster, you can track only one task, if you pick up a new task when tracking something else, you have no idea where the new task is, and, why the menu always fold every time I open it?

Then the combat system, god, it is horrible, it seems you don't have i-frames when rolling, and whether you can stun-lock enemy is unpredictable, I can't figure it out. The awkward camera, bad movesets, man, if they don't know how to make action game, then don't. I used to dislike QTE but maybe it is a better and simpler solution than this crap.

The land has no variety, that is the problem with open world games, it is hard to add different layouts on a big map, yet Zelda manages that. You know, for a magic world, the environment doesn't look magic at all, Morrowind did a better job, Dark Souls is far more amazing, it's not the resolution or color, it is the design.

The task, god. In order to get my help, kill me a griffin. In order to find Ciri, help me find my family. In order to locate something, help me find my lamb. This is getting out of control! The pattern is so predictable I am really getting bored.

I think a 75% discount of GOTY version would worth the money.

Beautiful world, great design and interaction with game characters, however, combat is lacking, can't play as female character, story is forceful and can't change it to my choice. Full of ghosts, witches and non-sense. Not enjoyable after a while, sold the game unfortunately.

I like this game, I really do and enjoy playing it, but there's so much wrong with it that I can't rate it more than 6.

The quest-line is nice, the comic-style animated cutscenes are sweet too. I especially like the fact that many random, totally minor quests have their story and they made typical "find item X and slay Y monsters" quest fun and engaging, good job with this!

Nonetheless, game has it's downsides and they are mostly technical.

The combat system feels rubber-bandy, I feel like it's not up to me to control the character, the responsiveness could also be an issue. It seems like it's supposed to feel like combat it Batman, but it doesn't quite do the job.

There are many noticeable fps drops and collision glitches, which is an effect to complex geometry and big world.

The most important thing it the interface, which is slow, over-complicated (the mini map is helpful though), and the thing that bugs me is that world map is not directly accessible, but requires two steps to perform.

Western RPGs (WRPGs) normally have a very basic and short main plot, with the majority of the game comprised of unrelated subplots, side quests, and exploration. The Witcher 3 isn't different here, but improves on most of this when compared to past WRPGs. But it's far from perfect and likely won't change the minds of people who aren't fans of the genre.

The side activities take up the vast majority of the game. This is definitely a game for people who want to roam about in an open world, exploring and doing random tasks for its population. As someone who doesn't like these sort of activities, I actually had a great time during the first 10 hours of doing this. Saving villages, finding hidden treasure, and hunting down monsters while going place to place in my quest to get information on my daughter (the main quest) was great. But there's only so many different side activities, and they're eventually repeated, several times.

What immersed me during those first hours is that the world is more real than most WRPGs I've played. The NPCs, while not very talkative, did a good job convincing me that they lived in the world. Quest givers would interrupt me and give me convincing reasons why I should help them. And all of this was taking place while I was on the main quest to obtain information, so all side activities felt like they were potentially useful for that purpose. This is opposed to other WRPGs were you have an urgent main quest, but it's somehow put on hold whenever you feel like doing side quests.

The other WRPG I played most recently is Dragon Age Inquisition. To compare the two: The side content in The Witcher 3 is much more interesting, but just about anything is more interesting than Dragon Age Inquisition's boring and inconsequential fetch quests. The world is simply more believable and feels less like developers randomly made up things or plopped down monsters on an evenly-spaced grid. The protagonist is much more believable since he's a set character and not a blank-slate made up by the player.

As I became bored of the side content, I focused more on the main plot: finding your daughter, and the things that come afterwards. It's mostly believable, but it's an average drama at best. At least it doesn't immediately thrust us into a "save the world from the bad guy with stupid motivations" plot. This is better than most video game stories, but isn't up to par with the best that video games have to offer. You might be disappointed if you're looking for a story with deeper meaning or something comparable to the best fiction that humanity has to offer.

All characters are fully voice acted. Unfortunately, all of the voice actors aren't equally good, so if you're one of the few who can point out bad voice actors, you'll find a few here. It's also a bit jarring when most characters use a British accent, but some large roles are played by people with cartoon-quality American accents.

Combat is fully action-based and isn't amazing. It's serviceable, but clunky. I never felt like I had accurate control of my character, and primarily resorted to spamming the same attack with an occasional spell. And that's really all you need to complete the game on the normal difficulty level.

The in-game menus are slow, swimming is horribly clunky, and horse riding is about as good as the combat. The game doesn't feel very polished and it can really hurt the immersion for some.

And then there's the bugs. This is the buggiest PS4 game I've experienced. Clipping models during cut scenes, invisible swords/gloves, dialogue overlapping, monster corpses with required quest items on them disappearing, getting stuck, full game crashes, and load of other issues that really hurt immersion for me. Well, at least the automatic 10-minute autosave comes in handy, so I never lost much progress.

And one last thing that really bugged me: The mini map. The game's navigation and quests depend on it. You're rarely told where a monster is or your next quest objective is. NPCs seem to know that you have a magical map that tells you exactly where everything is, complete with a dotted line that shows you the quickest path to take. It wouldn't be so bad if I could ignore it, but it's simply not possible. You receive so little information from NPCs that you'll never find out where to go unless you follow the mini map. Just count this as another thing that takes away from the game's immersion.

So, this is likely an amazing game for WRPG fans, or for those who easily become addicted to side content in open worlds. But for me, I found it to be a slightly above average experience.

Technical kinks aside (controls, camera etc.) I have to say that this game was just not for me. I appreciate when games have a lot of story to tell and The Witcher is full of nice little and not so little stories but the game seriously lacks gameplay. For me there was no sense of accomplishment. The game constantly gives you detailed instructions where to go and what to do. Even the fighting was no real challenge.

When the game works with me, it works. It feels nice, looks nice, and is something that I could play for a very long time.

However, I am then shat on by the game's movement system and weird combat issues I have. My issues concern the difficulty and mechanical problems that I have.

The movement has been annoying so many times that I've learned to just accept it and move on. So for me, this makes the game feel not very fun with the amount of traveling you do. I abhor the swimming and underwater sections. Your horse seems to just perform a full stop over a small rock, or a sharp turn on trees, or fences whose actual space in the world affects the riding mechanic.

I've played on Death March. So many people advertise this as the correct way to the play the game. For me, it ended up being a sponge-fest of prepping for the battles when there were a lot of enemies (spam them with bombs), or a big boss fight whose A.I I haven't triggered yet (alchemy and signs). It all blended into Quen, using the same potions and oils. Wait for my moment and attack when necessary. It was good the first hour, it then became repetitive and routine.

The story and characters were what made it all worthwhile in the end. That is essentially the only good thing about this game for me.

It's a solid story on top of a base that is ready to crumble and crack based on my experiences. So for me, the game is above average. That is because of what you will be spending most of your time doing, which is exploring and doing quests.

I downloaded this game the day it came out. I was excited seeing all the trailers, the buildup, the screenshots and the massive hype. I was looking forward to a fantasy laden game with deep exploration, big monsters to hack and slash, beautiful and engrossing environments and strong characters.

And what i got was a half baked, incomplete, raggedy mess!

The only thing this game does well are the characters and character development. Everything else is sub par.

The controls are horrid. Even after multiple updates fixing all sorts of bugs, CDPR are vehemently opposed to fix the clunky combat and control system. Controlling Geralt is like trying to control a lead balloon. In combat the camera never stays fixed so mobs just run past your HUD making you have to move your clunky camera to face them as they raggedly try to jump on you.

Sword movements don't have any feedback - it feels the same when slicing thin air or slicing an enemy - the timing of Geralt is not consistent - a quick attack feels slower or faster at every input, not to mention there is also a very noticeable input lag, especially when trying to dodge and roll.

The enemies movement is jagged and rough - so is Geralts. The concept of smooth combat is non-existent in this game. This not only applies to movement in combat but also exploration. It often takes multiple attempts for a input prompt to pop up while interacting with the world as your character is just a pixel of 2 off center. You have to press X multiple times in hope that you get the input as this is easier than trying to align Geralt properly.

The menu is horrendous. It seems CDPR did not have a UX designer on their team during development. Equipment items and toggling through you menu items is tedious, clunky and slow. Its not intuitive at all - i mean how come there is no quick toggle between your inventory items and equipped items? You have to scroll using the d-pad though all your inventory items for the cursor to move right and land on your equipped items - and did i mention that even moving the cursor has a input lag - i constantly found myself hitting the d-pad multiple times for the cursor to move 1 slot.

The world map is confusing and ragged - moving your marker from one place to another almost feels like scratching your nails on a chalkboard. It is so jittery and spotty. This is the map for god's sake - this is not in-game where you can expect frame rate drops in a game this vast, this is the god damn map screen. SMH

Which brings me to the "open world." Its more like open areas than open world and you cannot traverse from one area to the next without using the fast travel mechanic. So how is this a true open world? Its a segmented open world - i.e the area you are in is open to exploration within its confines, but if you want to leave that area to another part of the world, you must fast travel, which turns the screen into a loading screen until it plops you into the new area of the game.

Which also brings me to the sheer barren and lifelessness of the world you are in. Yes the open areas are vast but they are vast swaths of mostly wilderness foliage. The towns you come across are more or less all the same which gives you no incentive to actually want to go in a explore, unless its part of a quest.

Natural exploration is limited in this game. If you wandered around aimlessly you will see the same thing everywhere - same structures, same enemies, same types of people, etc. Its not fun, unless you are on a specific mission or side quest.

Now with that out of the way - this game has a few good things going for it.

The main draw would be the characters and their story-lines. They are interesting, intriguing and compels you to want to know more, hence you finish that specific mission or quest to see it through to the end in order to find out the fate and outcome of the people involved.

In some instances this aspect of game play can be quite deep and intricate. A lot of the characters are well acted and makes Geralt invest heavily in their missions - so you care about what happens to them and either want them dead or fight for their survival.

This aspect alone made me want to continue playing just to see what happens to certain characters and unfold the story - which is a good one mind you.

So i feel like this game is a great shame - a shame for what it could have been. It has a lot going for it but the execution is so poorly done its a chore to play. The sad thing is a lot of these aspects could have been easily fixed, i.e clunky movements, choppy menus etc by update patches but the developer i feel is too stubborn and is forcing us to play the game "their way."

With all the updates this game has received in the last 3 years, the one that is most complained about - the clunky movement and jagged combat mechanics have never been addressed and we will never truly know why that is.

I so often enjoyed seeking out a "?" to find a side story, some treasure or a fun battle. It also has some great character development. I genuinely cared about several side characters and enjoyed seeing how my choices played out. The worst thing it does is in regards to it's battle system, item management and leveling system. The battle system is just... bad. It may have been good in 2015, but by 2020's standards, it's clunky, boring and repetitive. It also seems to want you to use magic and a variety of weapons but these are attached to ring selection systems that detract from the overall action. Item management is rough. The UI isn't great overall on the PS4 but trying to keep track of crafting, junk, collectables, consumables, etc, takes much entering/exiting of several menus and submenus. The levelling system is interesting in concept but starts to get boring about 40 hours in. The limited number of slots means that you really have to specialize, which isn't always great depending on the enemies you encounter. Further, it feels like the game wants you to try a few different Geralt types (speedy/tanky/magic/etc) but trying to do this requires rebuilding and reorganizing your character quite a bit. None of this is easy to do or convenient.

Overall, i think this type of game must appeal to a certain type of gamer as the positive reviews really had me scratching my head as i tried over and over to get into it. I can say now that the game is probably worth $20 but was never worth full price. As well, if you feel like you're not able to get into the game, it probably won't change - even after forcing yourself to continue on just a little longer. i wouldn't spend time buying the add-ons as you'll be burnt out before you get tot them anyway.

6 is a generous score. The combat is shallow and repetitive. There is little variation in enemy patterns during fights. Hitting with a sword feels clunky. Exploration felt like a chore. This is possibly the most overrated game ever made.

A decent game. However the main character, The one you have to play with. Is a total arse. One of the most unlikeable looking and acting people in any game Period. He looks like Peter Stringfellow and acts like a clod of earth.
If I could design my own character and not have to look at this unpleasant dolt - I would love this game.

But bizarre as this seems, this 80's night club owner look-a-like being on my screen every second of the game? I can't play it. He's that bad - I've turned it off.
Writing probably great (only played 40 minutes - so can't really judge), graphics certainly seem good for the 20 minutes I play. Not really a fan of reaction based combat, but this seems ok as well. Other mechanics seem fine.
I just can't stand the main protagonist - so that's "Game Over" for me.
Yes it's a good game probably. If they mod it so you can change the look of the main guy I'll jump on board, but otherwise I'm just picturing him beckoning Vinny Jones and Maria Whittaker into his cheesy neon night club for a cocktail with too many bits of fluorescent crap floating in it.
He's the worst main character I've ever seen IMO.

    - It's big - but this also leads to some of the cons.
    - lots of gear - but again this leads to a con

    Cons
    - Combat is clunky. Some RPG games have smooth flowing fight animations, but apart from the odd death blow, Witcher does not fell like i am playing an experienced expert fighter, but a grunt with a sword. Certainly nothing cool in a fight.
    - Combat is boring, the spells are while useful and necessary, competely dull. After a little while, you'll use pretty much only 2 spells(Fire and shield) and both are ..meehh.
-Swords - I change swords to get a magical upgrade. How the hell do I know that has happened. If I change swords, then make it noticeable I have changed. Give it a different moveset, make the sword look different. Make me excited when I change to a new sword, especially if It is one I've spent hours collecting materials to build. It's dull.
    - herbs - OMG, I know a lot of games where you can collect herbs, but this is ridiculous! This is not an MMORPG where I am going to expect to be playing it in 2 years time. It's a game with a start-mid and end, I do not wish to have to waste my life looking for stupid herbs.
    - inventory management is terrible. things clumped together in meaningless groups. Very small inventory screen with difficult to read stats/names/amounts.
    - General movement - no fluidity. In one scene you have to get into a burning building save the horses and the people and get out in a very short time frame, but trying to jump over a burning barrel takes precious seconds to do. Just one example where movement is clunky.
    - Interactions - Looting is the biggest here. when looting you have to be at specific angles to loot a body or a plant. stand on to of it, and you can't, stand next to it at the wrong angle you can't. it'sincredibly frustrating. Other examples is the burning building again. you have to interact with several doors to release the horses, but while you know you are close enough to do the interaction the engine does not recognise it. This kind of function is paramount to a game with Soooo much looting and interaction, so it should work.
    - Load times - Die and it take several minutes to load my last save, move to a new area, several minutes. Reminds me of Fallout New Vegas, where you could go away and make a drink while you wait on the loads.

While all these things are annoying, are they game breaking, maybe not, but they sure add up to me spending a lot of my time saying "Seriously!!" and not being able to play for long periods. Am I going to finish the game, yes, because the story keeps you hooked, but will i go back for a second playthrough, probably not.

The combat has weight and managing the stamina adds a welcome tactical layer to the experience ; that said the game knows only to challenge you by spawning a stupid amount of enemies. Button mashing is often necessary and interior combat is as bad as it gets, which is a situation the game puts you in often.

Button mashing is often necessary and interior combat is as bad as it gets, which is a situation the game puts you in often.

The magic signs have their importance but you will be spending most of your time recharging your shield which essentially confines your magic abilities to boosting your armor. The perks, abilities, and weapon upgrades are mechanically useful yet they fail to excite beyond their functionality.

Dialogue wise, the genealogy of answers is quite shallow and deprived of branching - Suffice to experience Deus ex: Human revolution's dialogue system to understand what I mean by that. There is no "Game" to be found in the dialogue mechanics. The characters are inanimate dolls and the choices on offer are nothing more than a bunch of glorified playback buttons.

Exploration wise, I think the game does a descent job in terms of environmental story telling, but nothing that is worth the praises beyond the best the competition has to offer. Shenmue 2 does much more in my opinion and the game came out nearly 20 years ago. The investigative phases are a real joke too, where you are mindlessly following red marks - yet another example of shallow, unaccomplished mechanic.

The pacing is a real problem too ; During the first half of the game (10hrs), the story literally stalls. The game becomes more engaging once you reach the second half, but it feels too little too late. The characters are likable and by the end of the game I did feel some attachment towards some of them. The difficulty is also an issue, where the beginning happens to be much harder than the end; I beat the final bosses on my first attempts while being vastly under-leveled.

The visuals are fairly bland retrospectively ; For instance, I find the sunsets particularly vulgar and over-saturated . The towns also, lack authenticity in their structure and layout, and that is particularly jarring if you compare it to the original Assassin's creed's urban layout, which feel substantially more authentic and researched.

To conclude, I'd say that the disproportionate success and admiration this game has generated, comes from the fascination that the average nerd historically hold toward medieval sword and shields ; It's the "game of thrones" generation that has brought Wild hunt to the pinnacle.

Wild hunt is not a bad game, it's just so far from being this timeless masterpiece.

All in all its a very beautiful game and rich world I could get lost in until some glitch, flawed mechanic, or poor design choice pulls me right back out. Pretty average for a AAA title, but pretty good for a small studio without a lot of talent.

But when you look beneath the surface, you find a game that plays.. well hardly plays at all, both mechanically and experientially. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, heard the positive reviews, and waited until after multiple patches, before I judged. Witcher 3 has ultimately bad controls and poor combat besides the in-game card game Gwent, the gameplay is not good. Simply moving your static character (Geralt or Ciri) is a chore. He constantly feels like he is stepping over his feet or lost in the mood, never natural (and this doesn't change after hours of playing). His c button to loot constant random stuff around him is often unintuitive. And these poor controls bleed deeply into the combat- hit boxes are irrelevant, dodging is pointless, there are two button making swings and that's it, victory is determined based on your level, difficulty setting, or inventory management (the last of which I could respect if any other principals of gameplay combat were also accounted for). And I will say that all of these mechanics are much more poorly executed in Witcher 3 than in last year's Dragom Age Inquisition. To top it all off there are still glitches galore, main missions are rendered incompletable because the character can't examine the red stuff that he is supposed to be able to examine. So you're just like what's the point. This is hardly a game. If you want a medieval soap opera fantasy, just watch game of thrones on HBO. Expand

One thing I hated while playing this on PlayStation 4 is that they had dulled the graphics down to a point where there was no point in making it about the graphics but they still pushed it to a point where it struggles to run on average PS4s. The fact that the game was constantly dipping into the 20 FPS range was not good and made a mediocre game even worse. Let's see, the universe is all right. The story is absolutely dog **** and confusing but if you ignore it and look around at the universe then that's the enjoyable part. The story is just so bland there's no point in praising it. The story is just an excuse for the horrible gameplay. Go here because A said so. Well B isn't where A said he was better find him. Oh C told me B is over at D. Turns out B isn't at D better find B. That's the level of depth we're talking about here. The actual gameplay is super boring. It's slow, clunky, and a mixture of too easy and hard. I was able to beat a boss standing still with my thumb on one button but as soon as I see a level 1 dog I'm dead because it just runs by and attacks me similar to an AoE attack without slowing down. Geralt is too slow to do anything. Buy the game to say you played it but save the reciept. Expand

I loved the Witcher 3 for about 12 hours, it's graphics are beautiful, the storyline is interesting but definitely confusing if you haven't played the others, at times I had no idea what was going on (I hadn't, but I decided to watch a video on youtube that gives you an abridged version), the atmosphere is great and overall, I couldn't fault it.
However, after my initial honeymoon period I became bogged down with the clunky combat, at times it's great, but inconsistent. It does become an absolute mess if you have more than 4 enemies targeting you. Over time my interest in the characters began to wane, I really didn't care less about their plight. The final nail in the coffin was spending my time completing the most inane quests that were all pretty much identical. It suffers from GTA4 syndrome, where all of the quests seem to be go to point A, kill / rescue someone, go to point B. Repeat. It was this monotony that made me quit before I wasted any more of my life on dull quests. I really wanted to like the game, but I fell into the trap of just playing it or the sake of it, and not actually enjoying the experience. Not for me. There are more exciting and visceral games out there. Play those.

    My issues:

-Combat is basically hopping around and then striking. The quen shield is sort of useful. None of the other spells really add anything exciting.

-Combat and movement in general are horribly clunky. It feels like swimming in molasses. I'm coming off playing Bloodborne, so I guess it's hard to have an experience as good as that game's dynamic fighting. Tracking enemies is stupidly hard as the lock on skips around.

-Along with movement, the mount and looting are are far more complicated than they should be. Overstepping things should be a game achievement.

-This is not an open world. It's like Dragon Age: Inquisition where they story pushes you from large zone to large zone.

    -The story? ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

-Items? Jesus. How much crap do I need? Why do RPGs feel like loading me up like a pack horse equals awesomeness?

-Weapon durability. I have to repair my swords after every 5-6 encounters.

Basically, I do not get they hype.

When, walking around it feels like you are trying to control a drunk character, when riding your horse you will constantly get stuck literally everywhere (fences, trees, bushes, sometimes you'll even get stuck on nothing), when fighting you'll feel like you don't have any control of your character moves at all, the camera in the fights is so bad that you will have to constantly manage the camera angle while fighting, and the movements are so awkward (plus you'll notice a huge frame rate drop during fights). All around combat is just pathetic and unsatisfying....just awkward and rubber-ish/drunkish.
It's really just this control thing which is ruining the game that could have an enormous potential as an action rpg. Between a rage quit here and there because of bad controls and some really epic moments, I am unsure whether turning this game back to the store to purchase another one or keep on trying....

Instead of actually writing in detail why I didn't rate it I will just list them,

Instead of actually writing in detail why I didn't rate it I will just list them,
    1. Not open world, obviously that's why they worded it an open World experience.
2.A semi autonomous character that you sort of have control over apart from when it decides to draw its sword and go into a combat ready mode when you near an enemy even if you don't want to (not good In a RPG),maybe I should explain that in an RPG your are supposed to have control over your character not the console.
    3. A clanky old fashion combat system that wouldn't be out of place on a game ten years old ,there is a delay between you hitting the button and the character moving , most notable whilst in combat
    4. The movement dynamics of the character are atrocious, most notably when you try to position him next to a box or chest to gain access to it ,the only way I can describe it is it's like the character is made of jelly .
    5. Once you have visited a number of notice boards you will see on the map masses of ? meaning something of interest is here, the problem is 90% of those ? are a couple of monsters or Villains standing next to a chest which they call GUARDED TREASURE ,this happens at sea as well where instead of guarded treasure they call it smugglers caches, I call it monotonous filler , honestly after visiting the 40th one you lose the will to live.
6.A character that whines like a big Girls blouse if he takes a fall more than 2 feet in height (He is supposed to be a superhuman being that as been genetically enhanced by mutagens).
7.Even something as simple as the map they somehow managed cock up,once there are good number of characters on it the cursor travels across it in a serious jagged movements because each character pulls at the cursor as it passes by ,every game you come across as a map which doesn,t do this and works perfectly well so WHY?
8.I cannot do the bare knuckle fighting justice in words, you really have to experience for yourself how bad and annoying it is.
9.Ended up enjoying the card game known as Gwent more than actually playing the storyline.
    10. The Swearing is fine but after a while you feel like you are watching a talentless Comedian who tries to hide the fact of how bad he is by swearing a lot.
11.Geralt can climb (sometimes) but cannot descend, you literally have to fall of of things to descend, and as already stated this is followed by a loud whinge and if the fall is more than six feet death.
    12. You can make a cup of tea whilst it is loading.Handy but annoying.
    13. Whilst on the horse every movement you make is followed by Geralt bellowing at it SLOW DOWN ,SPEED UP ,ETC, not needed.
    14.etc etc etc
    15. Projekt Red compared it to Skrim, here is why it is not as good
No stealth, No bow, No magic to speak of, No Guilds, No companions, Truly open world, When there is a point of interest on the map there is actually something interesting there ,No pick pocketing, Skyrim had a fully fledged legal system you could end up in jail, No Dragons. You could do damage to your foes at a distance which I love as I always seem to play Bowmen, Play as different characters,Build your own House, much prefer the bar instead of the map, In the Right hand bottom corner there is a continous display giving basic action Info again WHY?, Mine Minerals and make your own Weapons, Armour.etc etc
    16.Here is whats better
More memorable characters,Obviously better graphics its next gen.Not afraid of adult themes or content I mean can you imagine an Inn in the Elder Scrolls being called The Cunny of the Goose,The boat was cool, Rock Trolls or as I will always think of them trolliloes ,Sense of humour.

A good Game but scratch the surface and there was not a lot underneath.

I've never written a review of a computer game before but felt compelled to by seeing all the positive reviews. I don't know if it's because I'm probably a bit older than the average gamer, or because I don't really feel too strong an affinity with RPG systems, but I have never been so disappointed by a game.

I've never written a review of a computer game before but felt compelled to by seeing all the positive reviews. I don't know if it's because I'm probably a bit older than the average gamer, or because I don't really feel too strong an affinity with RPG systems, but I have never been so disappointed by a game.

I'll focus on the positive first; the reason it got five stars. The graphics are tremendous, don't get me wrong, you know you're still in a computer game but the landscape is very well balanced. The lighting is warm and the sunsets are long. Animations are smooth and responsive. It is a beautiful game. Also, the scope for developing the character is very wide - I imagine one could spend a good deal of time and thought developing the character's skill set. Unfortunately, I can't stretch my positive comments any further. Here are a few critiques.

Open world games are the epitome of gaming as far as I'm concerned. I never quite get a feeling of immersion in a restricted world. GTA and Skyrim of course come to mind, and I'm aware that there are plenty of comparisons out there so I'm just covering the same ground. Now, Witcher 3 had a world much larger than Skyrim's, and I admit I never explored too much of it, but I did get to the edge of the world a number of times, something which it took me weeks to do in Skyrim. This just pulled me out of the fantasy and reminded me that I was in a constructed world. Perhaps I'm asking too much, but why not just make the terrain impassable or an ocean / plain?

Which brings me onto my second critique; the nature of the world. Initially I was amazed by how familiar the world looked, the forests looked like forests I'd visited, the gentle rise and fall, the shallow canyons and the density of the trees was all great. Unfortunately, I found it all too regular. I could ride for five minutes and encounter nothing new. I'd still be in a forest. The villages and towns were all strikingly similar. Yes, all the characters had interesting little animations, but ultimately it was all quite mundane. Compare this with Skyrim, where you have huge stone ruins and each city has its own character. I fear the designers weren't quite on their game when it came to creativity; I want sublimity not technical accomplishment. Even compared to GTA which is simply a city in the real world, you have such a wealth of different environments that the world feels vastly different within a few minutes walk.

My final main critique is the acting. It was simply atrocious. Skyrim was bad, GTA was pretty good, excellent in fact. But the acting in Witcher 3 was like some terrible made-for-tv movie. Maybe it's good for a game, but I really did laugh all the way through. The story that the acting was meant to carry too, was very basic. I understand that story-telling in a game is still a developing field compared to film or literature, but it doesn't detract from the fact that this was very linear and tedious. Even the was the story unravels was fairly plain; talk to this guy, then talk to this guy. One interesting development was using the scent trails, at least it was interesting the first time. After that it was pointless, why not just highlight them on a map?

Anyway, I'll call it a day. I found the game tedious, the story mundane and the landscape simply plain.

The movement and combat control terribly. The mission design is repetitive, and the story mainly has you doing fetch quests for people so they will tell you information.

Very overhyped game. Honestly, I am getting the feeling that many reviewers are TRYING to just overhype certain games these days.

Look it is the Witcher...same exact freaking game as the last two. Nothing new at all. This installment adds nothing new to the franchise. The only reason I am giving it 5 stars is because the Witcher is generally a good game, but this game is a

Look it is the Witcher...same exact freaking game as the last two. Nothing new at all. This installment adds nothing new to the franchise. The only reason I am giving it 5 stars is because the Witcher is generally a good game, but this game is a cookie-cutter. Fairly boring RPG elements. Story that tries way too hard to make you care. Graphic and mature content that adds nothing to the value of the game or the story. Bland combat that is the exact same as the game from two titles ago in the series.

This is now the second rehash of a successful game. Do something new already.

The conclusion of Geralt’s game saga couldn’t be better. The large open world, great storytelling and dozens of hours of pure fun – this game is an absolute must for every RPG fan. [Issue#253]

This truly outstanding game raises the bar to new heights that will be extremely hard to reach for BioWare, Bethesda and any other developer. [07/2015, p.38]

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga — which isn't helped by the control issues that often detract from sequences meant to break up open-world monotony.
