I’d say the only nice part about this game is the graphics, and nothing much wrong with the gameplay either. If anything it’s just repetitive. The real issue is with the pacing of the storyline. I get they were going for something dark and deep, but it just comes off nihilistic and painful. If it was a movie, maybe it’d be fine? But it’s a game and the playing field is different.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Giving it a 2 for +1 gameplay +1 graphics (amazing, just like TLOU1) but the story was a total disappointment. Did a child write this? I mean, not even my 14 year old cousin that does drama writing at school can come up with something so disappointing. No, I did not want a happy ending but at least some sense into it would’ve been nice. Did Joel need to go out that way? Did we need to use a character that we never heard of? Trailers are totally misleading and fake advertising. Not even R* smashed us this bad with Johnny Klebitz’ death, at least we understood his downfall with drugs and met a bigger match but someone like Joel with so much experience didn’t need to die that way. You lost me at the ending, as well. Not that you all care anyways, you got your money boohoo. Expand

The visuals and graphics were amazing and and gameplay mechanics felt so smooth and intuitive with plenty of good response. The story was compelling but I felt some slight restructuring of the story order could have made Abby a more compelling protagonist and could have really allowed for rebranding of the franchise in a more favorable light

It's the "Evan Almighty" of "Bruce Almighty", Its narrative could fit perfect for a Hollywood film not a game...

Poor game narrative, it's a 15 hours game long at least, the rest of time wasted in cinematics just as a movie, it's like: Waaa I want revenge, I'll kill everyone!!!... Shoot, bla bla cinematics, almost getting killed, run... more cinematics... kill someone brutally, bla bla

Shoot, bla bla cinematics, almost getting killed, run... more cinematics... kill someone brutally, bla bla bla crying cinematics and so on, at the end it cries because revenge is not the righteous way and stops getting revenge. 5 years for this?, you must be ashamed. It should be better make an DLC to complete the narrative of this game. It would be better and cheaper. They cut off abruptly all the story, there are so many holes in its plot, very disappointing. I really love the first one, I was expecting anything else, anything to remember every single day of my life but not this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high hopes for this game because everything Naughty Dog makes is a masterpiece. This is the exception. The story was awful. I hated Abby from the get-go even before she killed Joel. Hated playing as her. She did have some fun skills/abilities but playing as the person that killed Joel for half the game? Are you kidding me? By the time I started playing as Abby again after she raided the theater I was bored of the game. Only reason I kept playing was because I loved the first game and wanted to find out the ending. Never did I think I would have to play as Abby for another 10-20 hours. This game dragged and dragged while you played as Abby . Only reason I’m not giving this game lower rating is because the combat/gameplay and graphics were amazing. But sadly that’s not enough to make a game a “masterpiece” for me. I realize sequels are very rarely as good or better than the original. But red dead redemption 2 was better than rdr1 imo so I know a great gaming company can do it. I hate to give such a low rating as I consider myself to be a glad half full kind of person but I just didn’t not enjoy anything in this game except the combat and graphics. I don’t totally hate the fact that Joel died for the sake of the story. I get it. Gotta move on or the game would be the same as the last. I can’t think of anything else that would have motivated me more to play this game. But by the end I was relieved I was finally done with this game. The ending was trash. You travel to California to kill Abby to finally avenge Joel and Ellie just lets her go when she’s about to kill her. That’s the only reason I kept playing. So I could kill Abby which was THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME. Awful. That’s all I gotta say. Play the game but don’t get your hopes up. I did and was thoroughly disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Expand

The story is easily the most controversial part about this game and for good reason, it takes some very ballsy turns very quickly, but in my opinion pretty much everything that happens makes sense for the context of the world that the characters live in. This game is just heart breakingly disappointing comparing this to previous Naughty Dog titles and feels like major kick in the face compared to the first game. It lacks all the organic subtlety and beautiful character relationships of the first game. There are so many ham fisted attempts to get players to feel a certain way that they can see it a mile away as shallow and forced.
The lack of different beats through this game made it dull and repetitive. Almost the entire game focuses on showcasing as much gore and how "dark" the game is while flashbacks of happier times appear to add no meaning to the plot.
The writers want you to feel morally gray and think about all the npc's as being people and yet lack the time and effort in humanizing them which leaves you with subpar characters that are one dimensional. Either that or the main characters have drastic mood swings jumping from one morality to another instead of properly building character development and don't appear to reflect real human beings. The game seems to hold itself on a high pedestal for showcasing a diverse ethnic cast with people of various different sexual orientations yet appear to use them as a gimmick or they have no development or they get killed off quickly.
It's just incredibly sad to see how this company appears to have dropped the ball on such a beautiful franchise. I wanted to love this game so badly and I just couldn't when I see them hit every writing mistake you should never do in a story. It just seems like these wasn't enough testing of the game to make sure everything read well and hit the correct target audience.
Note that I also wasn't spoiled by any leaks. I saw this game with fresh eyes and it still made me disappointed. The game is pretty and gameplay is fun which are it's only saving graces.

Gameplay was basically unchanged despite some minor changes. Can not deny the visuals are beautiful. However, nothing will remedy the fact that 10 hours of the game should have been avoided and should be avoided entirely. What was anticipated as a major success, really turned out to be a major bust. If this were a standalone game perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad. Sadly this is a sequel to a much beloved game, that does very little to improve upon it, if not muddy the waters. #sad Expand

Amazing game. Story is elaborate, going to places I never thought possible with surprises around every corner. Gameplay is top-notch, extremely realistic and immersive (especially on Survivor difficulty). My advice is to play it for yourself,

It exceeded my expectations, although as Neil said, this game would be opposite to the first, based on hatred. at the end it shows us the development of the character in Ellie, Forgiving Abby and in the beautiful final scene, a day before Joel dies, Pulling out all his feelings, Joel just nods, knowing that from now on, they will both be trying to get back to being like before, seeking his redemption, and so Joel, despite his death.Die in peace with Ellie, with Tommy and the people who loved him so much. People are really upset about the game for the wrong and most stupid reasons. Here, I will be clearing up all misconceptions and conducting a final recommendation.

PRO'S: - 10/10 graphics, especially if you play on 4k. - 8/10 story, basic but holds plenty of shorter story plots in the game, if you look hard enough. - 10/10 combat. The cinematic's in the game compared to gameplay
People are really upset about the game for the wrong and most stupid reasons. Here, I will be clearing up all misconceptions and conducting a final recommendation.

    PRO'S:
    - 10/10 graphics, especially if you play on 4k.
    - 8/10 story, basic but holds plenty of shorter story plots in the game, if you look hard enough.
    - 10/10 combat.
The cinematic's in the game compared to gameplay graphics are almost identical, and so beautiful. Definitely something you'd see from a tv show or a movie.

    CON'S:
    - The AI in the game can be kinda buggy, but it's not a constant reoccurring thing and only happens through certain parts of combat.
    - Don't play on a monitor with insane screen delay, it will be hard to play with.

Would I recommend (Spoiler free): if you liked the first game, absolutely. Game-play was long (It took me 34 hours in moderate difficulty) and the combat in the game is like nothing I’ve ever seen in a video game. It truly is advanced, and to be honest I’d love to see a Tomb Raider with this type of combat. Story wise, it’s pretty good. It’s kind of predictable but something as simple as that could make a game. When I played the first half of the game it was AMAZING, I loved it. When I started the second half of the game with Abby, my opinion was “goddamn-it, do I really have to play this for 10 hours?” But about 3 or 4 more chapters into the second half of the game it really grew on me and made me bond with the characters- so do NOT let that discourage you from continuing. My feelings conflicted with the final scene of the game and that’s what I feel really made the game something worth while. Of course, after that major scene, were left with the final cinematic which is honestly truly the saddest scene I’ve ever seen, and maybe the best. If you get stuck in your head sometimes, you'll understand what was going through in Ellie's head throughout the journey, and it will make your heart feel for both Ellie and Joel.

[SPOILERS AHEAD: All the rumors of the game and explaining them.]

Joel does die about an hour and a half to two hours into the game. However, without his death there is no game, since the whole story plot revolves around Joel dying. Sure they could live a happy life, but the game couldn't have just picked up right after the hospital, we had to get a sense of Ellie growing up, and a sense of the new world. Ellie's immunity story-line is OVER. There's nothing more to do with that since the Fireflies are now dis-banned or mostly deceased from the Hospital. Even though Joel dies 2 hours into the game, you will still get heartfelt scenes and flashbacks with Joel. Abby is NOT a transgender. She is a women, and she looks masculine because heavy weights help her become stronger and relieve the stress, as she can some day avenge the death of her father. However, there IS a transgender in the game, a little boy named Lev who was banished from his tribe for his actions. Throughout the game, we were given the impression from the WOLVES that Joel was a bad guy for killing the Fireflies at the hospital and saving Ellie from her destined death. You have to understand why these people (and Ellie) were actually angry over a selfish act Joel had done. He could have potentially saved mankind, which leaves to my final misconception explanation: There is no cure to the virus. If you read every note, a few doctors and FEDRA soldiers have mentioned that the situation of the virus would not bring the zombies back to a humane mindset and ultimately will be unable to become human. (For some reason, some people seem to believe this is possible, as this is a fantasy game, it still does take realistic factors). The cure would only work for those alive and uninfected, however their chances of dying from the infected, still is a possibility as they cannot get infected directly from the virus they could still die by; bleeding out, getting overran, eaten alive, and so-on.

I avoided spoilers, was prepared to hurt, and confident that even if TLoU II wasn’t as good as the first one, there would be things I would enjoy about it and the story would be amazing if not utterly devastating. I adored the first game and couldn’t even imagine the sequel being anything close to something I could hate. This was especially true as I watched one critic review after another glorify the game to no end and declare that what ND had produced was a near “flawless masterpiece”.
Now, after investing nearly 30 hours into the game and throughly processing my thoughts and emotions, I can only wonder if I even played the same game as these other people. The Last of Us Part II is visually beautiful and has a play style that is enjoyable and reminiscent of it’s predecessor, the unoriginal mechanics have improved little over the last 7 years and have only a few things about them to make the game stand out. The redundant encounters along with lack of customization and rewards for exploration however are unable to compensate for the one-dimensional story-line that is overly predictable and made worse by a cringe worthy set of new characters who bog down the emotional impact ND seems to have so miserably failed to deliver. It’s crazy to me, that such a long campaign somehow manages to feel so extremely rushed, thrown together, and chaotic all at the same time. And while there are a few tear jerker moments and a handful of new faces that did have incredible potential (Jesse & Dina for example are fantastic) they are all put on the back-burner or severely outweighed by piles of uninteresting and poorly developed chapters centered on highly unlikable characters like Abby, who take a tremendous amount of effort to connect with at all. This factor is so overwhelming that it makes it difficult to grasp how anyone could possibly finish the game and say with a straight face they thought this is in any way, shape, or form a satisfying journey or conclusion.
I also find it completely idiotic that anyone believes that the issue with this game is some kind of a “SJW agenda”. Ellie’s sexuality, and the few other diverse mentions, can hardly be classified as a distraction or negative to the game. I actually found her relationship with Dina to be very endearing and one of the few story points I liked. I was even excited to see such a diverse cast, but being that all LGBTQ+ and characters of color here are disgustingly mistreated—either dying anti-climatically/horribly, barely used, quickly forgotten, and/or have endings so miserable its a struggle to understand why they were added at all.
The Last of Us 2 makes it easy to feel lost.
Nothing about this sequel brings closure and the only thing you’ll be wondering after you’ve finished it is “what was the the point?”
The concept of “revenge wrRoNg” is a lesson that could be taught from Disney children’s show’s or derived from common sense and yet Naughty Dog chose to spend their entire time stating the obvious through uneventful means, frustrating and un-engaging story-telling, and by spitting on the very shades of grey choices and characters that once made this series great.
I wish that I could say that the handful of good moments this game has made the time and money you could spend on it worth while....but the best way to describe this entire experience would be disappointing and pointless...Like GoT or the Star Wars sequels you feel like you have to finish it to the end (if you can even force yourself to do so—which, for me literally felt like an effort at times) but once you do, you just wish you had saved yourself the trouble. While it’s great to subvert fan expectations and introduce twists and turns throughout the plot, such decisions need to be executed properly and in the correct order; not wildly smashed together with under-developed story additions and highlighted by empty deaths scenes that do little other than provide shock value...another trait that has already been done repeatedly and much better. I feel like users that see no problem with TLoU2 are like individuals who insist that The Last Jedi is “misunderstood” and fans “just need to embrace different ideas” sounding like you are listening to a self-proclaimed “intellectual” that trying to convince us that **** flung at the wall is somehow “art” when in reality it really just is...actual **** Sometimes, being “different” for the sake of being different isn’t artistic, it’s just distasteful and lazy.
I respect and encourage anyone willing to play the game to decide for themselves how they feel about it as simply reading a synopsis does not give a complete picture/warrant a full review...but, the warnings that there is a good chance this game will leave you feeling like you wish you could just take a hot shower and forget everything you just witnessed are not far off. Overall score: 3/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The anticipation that spans years for a sequel to our favorite franchises should always feel worth the wait. From the original released in 2013, a classic tale that will forever impress and influence future game makers forever, to it’s following act in 2020, a journey in which I have never felt more connected to in my entire life. I felt as if I had to explore every corner of this game, every rag, every bottle, every journal entry, I wanted to experience it all. I tried as much as I could to prolong my adventure, I explored every inch of every area, opened every drawer I could, cracked as many safes as I found. I didn’t want this game to end. And when it did, I felt broken. When I found out that spoilers had been released for this game, I stayed off of social media for days. I didn’t see anything, I went into the story knowing absolutely nothing besides the official trailers that had been released. I didn’t know that Joel would die. The idea had popped into my head, particularly when Abby and Owen are discussing the town in Jackson at the beginning, questioning if “he” might be inside. When Abby ends his life, you do more than resent her. You want her dead. In that moment, you take on the journey as Ellie and pray that you never have to be put into Abby’s shoes again. But then it happens. And you don’t want her in front of your screen, you want Ellie back. But you keep playing. And you slowly begin to understand why she killed Joel. You still hate her, but why am I empathizing with her? Naughty Dog has a special way of connecting you to their characters. How could I go from hating someone’s guts to feeling bad for them? Especially when I felt so devoted to Joel and Ellie? It’s safe to say, however, I was extremely hesitant when knowing what was about to happen while approaching the theatre with Lev by my side. Having to be the one on the other side hurting Ellie broke me. But, having to fight Abby as Ellie also broke me. I think that’s what makes this game so great. You may not agree with any of the characters, you may hate them all, you may love them all. You may hate the story. You could hate Naughty Dog. But you can’t deny that they succeeded in doing what a video game is supposed to make you do: feel something; even if it’s all negative. The Last of Us Part II destroyed me. I feel an emptiness inside of me after stepping away from this game that I can’t explain, and that’s what a story should do. That is why I’m giving this game a perfect score. I could sit here and talk about the beautiful and seamless combat and gameplay. But we as humans, we don’t always think of those things first when remembering our favorite games/tv shows/movies. We think of how they made us feel. And this game made me feel emotions I never felt before. It was worth the 7 year wait. Expand

Ellie cannot live a fairy tale simply because the first game never aimed for it. It is cruel but it is true. Ellie has a much bigger purpose in all of this. She has a cure for humanity. And that's the beauty of the ending. The final memory with Joel makes her wake up. "My life has a purpose, and it is above a desire for revenge and a desire to live an ordinary life." So she lets Abby live, lets go of the guitar, grab her backpack and sets out to find her purpose. Thats the beautiful of the game. Abby gets real before that. The desire for revenge deflected the purpose and took everything away from them both. And Tommy! I believe that part 3 (if happens) will work on the redemption of Ellie and Dina in search for a cure. What do you think?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, the most amazing graphics I’ve ever seen in a game I can just imagine how good it’ll look on PS5. However, as you may already know the story was quite opposite. People who worked on the first one didn’t work on the second one and I think that’s one of the reason it’s on that level. A lot of the plot seems very forced and the timings are just plain stupid. Ellie and Dina are making out just before the death of Joel, imagine the guilt. While Joel, tommy and Abby are running from the infected, tommy out of nowhere just tells Abby their names, while literally running from zombies For no reason And it felt so forced you could really tell it and it just took you out of the immersion. Abby was saved by Joel and didn’t even think twice before brutally torturing him to death that is either very lazy story telling or the studio wanted us to have hatred against Abby. If so, then why on earth did we play as her for 10 hours, the game tries and makes us feel bad for her but it’s just made everyone hate her even more. She has done so many evil actions. The flashbacks were what everyone really loved and honestly they should release a game with just the flashbacks. Naughty dog is known for misleading trailers even in tlou1. In the ending where Ellie is about to kill Abby she gets a flashback of Joel and instead of getting angrier she just lets her Abby go. All in all, it felt like a very forced game with very little reasoning and I feel like it could have been much better if the staff of the previous one worked on this one aswell. Expand

I went into this game SUPER sceptical due to all the negative reviews and all the 10s games journalists gave (which always worries me too lol). I'm happy to say though that I've really loved it! I think the writing was a bit sloppy in parts, specifically with Joel but there's also some really amazing writing and character's I fell in love with. It's not for everyone, and the main negative for me was the combat does drag towards the end and the game play loop of battle loot cut scene, battle loot cut scene goes on a bit long and the violence can start to wear you out. This is definitely the prettiest gane I've ever played though and any other negatives for me are out weighed by the overwhelming positives. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I completed The Last of Us Part II. And I hated it.

First of all, the score of Gustavo Santaolalla is just perfect. The gameplay is great. The graphics are awesome (except some scenes, like the model of Ellie in the flashbacks of the last minute of the original game). Now, TLOU is a heavily story-based game. And this sequel lacks completely coherence, originality and meaning. It's bad writing at it finest.

Look, I loved the first game. It's characters, their bond, the ambiance, the soundtrack... But this one just doesn't feel like a real sequel. The only moments I felt like I was playing a real sequel of the last of us were in the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie.
I'm okay with Joel dying, but the way it happens its just poorly written. It isn't "brave"; It's cheap. The whole -parent figure dying and fuels the journey of his kid in name of revenge- is overused. Also the whole "revenge is bad" is extremely overused. And at last, -forgiving the enemy to not become an horrible person-let go the past- cliche, has been reused so many times that it has become comical. By the way, most of the game is filled up with a lot of plot holes and the pacing of the story is so tedious and boring.
And, at last: Abby. She's unlikable. Her character has pretty much no depth. We are forced to play as her for sooo many hours in a game that was supposed to be an Ellie's new adventure. It almost seemed to be more like an Abby's stand-alone game. And if that were the case (without including Joel or Ellie and ruining their arc's), we wouldn't mind.

So, to sum up: Loved the soundtrack, graphics and part of the gameplay (which can get very repetitive, and boring due to the slow pacing and the story) Absolutely hated the story and writing, direction and purpose of it.

This ain't The Last of Us. At least, not for me.

By far the most immersive and emotional experience I've had in arguably all of gaming. From the flawed characters to the amazing set pieces, this game is nothing short of a masterpiece. All I can say is play it yourself, and don't read up on anything. Just play it.

Amazing! Naughty dog played to the expectations! The story immerses you into the story of both ellie and Abby

Despite having amazing graphics, and gameplay, the story is the worst it could have been, with bland characters and an extremely slow pacing with a character you don't even like.

The gameplay is ok , but the storyline is pretty bad. For a storyline driven game thats a big problem

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tlou 2 is a very good game. You will know why i say this if you play the game. The gameplay is very good and the graphics is so phenomenal for ps4 (i dont even know how ps4 can run this game). Maybe alot of you really hate the stories because the way Naughty dog treat joel ( actually i kinda sad because of it) and the way ellie forgives abby and let her go in the end of the game ( she lost everything). In the end tlou 2 is a game not a movie so you have to play it and you will understand why this game is good or bad. I dont say that everyone will love the stories but atleast you will like the gameplay or the beauty of the graphics. For me its up to you to say that this game is very bad after play the game but when you rate this game 0 and youre not play the game yet your argument, your rating is invalid. So buy the game. Expand

I’d like my money back! Great visuals. But I was sold something different than advertised. If you’re going to sell a story driven narrative while not caring about the story but instead virtue signaling fans to death.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
