I have beaten the game, bought it with my own money, as well as played the first game. I did not enjoy The Last of Us Part 2.

The Last of Us Part 2 goes out of its way to preach, shame, and leave the player unsatisfied at every opportunity, and makes illogical decisions for how it presents its simplistic, common-sense themes.

There is a whole host of good in the game, but those diamonds are not worth the mountain of dirt needed to claw through to reach it. I will touch upon graphics, sound, gameplay, and then story.

    Graphics:

Definitely a step up in visual fidelity for this generation. Facial animation rarely gets this good in AAA games. You will constantly be in awe at the amount of detail, design, and animation present. The game runs at checkerboard 4K on the PS4 pro, but unfortunately it runs at a capped 30fps and occasionally dips down to the low 20s, so if you're a PC gamer used to 60fps and above you may want to skip this. There is also this awful film grain effect always present that cannot be disabled like the motion blur and camera shake can be.

    Sound:

Amazing sound design, the library of ambient and dynamic noise in this game is basically perfect. The music is perfect, although some segments of the gameplay are silent where you have no companion to speak to and no atmosphere to suck in. A good tune or two in these segments would have helped alleviate boredom. Another issue with the sound is that the volume mixing isn't as clean as it could be, your companion footsteps are just as loud as yours and enemies two rooms over can sound as if they're a few feet away. Rather than using your own sense of sound, you're a slave to the game's listen mode that highlights enemies through walls. I'm sure, however, that tweaking the deep sound settings could help this as you can tweak dynamic range, sound source angles, etc. The majority of players will not do this however.

    Gameplay:

Rather than advancing the formula from the first game, Naughty Dog decided to advance it "diagonally", in that some things are better and some things are changed just for the sake of it. Swapping weapons before getting new holsters is the exact same except you press X instead of Square. Changing shoulder aim is still done while aiming but you press Square instead of R1. You still craft a few new items but sometimes they're just not worth using unless you're in a situation where you're desperately using everything you have. You can go prone in grass now to hide, but it's functionally the same as if they had just added more cover everywhere. You can jump but it's useless outside of linear traversal.

Gunplay has not evolved in a meaningful way since the first game. You're still expected to go for headshots constantly, in spite of the artificial aim sway and having to aim with a thumbstick, as well as a bloomed reticule that never shrinks to pinpoint accuracy ala Red Dead Redemption. Do yourself a favor and disable camera sway in the accessibility options and increase your FOV. Enemies are still bullet sponges unless you get head-shots or opt for melee. You can easily be stun locked to death, or knocked down as an NPC tags you with a John Wick shot the second you poke your head out. Though combat never gets hard, it can easily be more annoying than fun at times. The game clearly wants to encourage stealth.

The stealth in this series has not taken any meaningful less from the greatest stealth games released in the past decade. Enemies have more realistic sight lines (sometimes, sometimes you can walk clear past them in plain view) meaning you need to move between cover more often and look for openings. However, you have a very slow movement speed meaning if an enemy decides to randomly turn around you have to pray you'll make it to the next bit of cover before he sees you. Even this is inconsistent though, as VERY often I'll be detected up to 5 seconds after moving behind cover. TLOU1 and 2 also commit the stealth game sin where one enemy detects you and everyone knows where you are, even if they don't get a chance to shoot or scream.

The tools they give you to navigate these stealth challenges are basic; some silenced weapons, throwables, and a takedown. Silenced weapons are only useful if you can reliably headshot every enemy in the level first try. Throwables are abundant, until they aren't. Melee takedowns are incredibly slow and can get you in more trouble than sneaking by, only effective if near cover or isolated. Levels cannot be ghosted intuitively first try, as it relies more on map knowledge and patrol routes than skill.

The "puzzles" in this game are awful and usually just amount to going the long way or reusing elements you'll learn in the first 3 hours without any creativity, or finding a paper that gives you a safe combo.

For a critique on the story, I recommend Hoeg Law as I've hit the character limit

Expand

Having an opinion is everyone's right, but it's such a shame that so many would review bomb a game they haven't finished, or in many cases even played, just because they didn't like the path the story took. I didn't like what happened in the game either. I was intensely attached to the characters at the end of part 1, and to see the way part 2 ended left me hollow, sad, and empty. But for me, the beauty in this game lies in its ability to make you feel, intensely, what's going on in the moment. The gameplay is absolutely stunning. I've never played a game that's had my heart pounding to the extent that this one did. The graphics, mind-blowing. I struggle to see why we even need another console generation so soon (not that I'm complaining), when my launch PS4 is able to give me such a stunning immersive experience. And the storyline, well, it's tough. The only joy you find are in the little moments, like the flashback to Ellie's birthday. But that's what TLOU is about. The world is bleak, joyless, and the game makes you come to terms with that far better than even the masterpiece that was part 1 did. Furthermore, never before has a game made the player come to terms with their own actions like TLOU2. Two instances in particular spring to mind. First, where you slaughter a vicious dog, and later are made to play catch with the same dog and see what a sweetheart she is (RIP Alice). Second, where Ellie gets information from a seemingly meaningless character, who in the second portion of the game we see as a jovial character who had simply been protecting herself. Without giving much away, I have never been made to feel so profoundly by any video game, or any form of media for that sake. There are times when the game gets uncomfortable to keep playing, but that's what makes this franchise what it is.
Also, just as a P.S. (Spoiler Alert), the moment where Ellie tells Joel she will try forgive him for lying about the fireflies made me so emotional I almost had to stop altogether.

The attention to detail is great, with the enemies you defeat calling out each others names adding extra realism. The knockback you experience when you get shot makes every shot feel more impactful and keeps you from wildly rushing enemies. The two separate but intersecting storylines made for an interesting storytelling device, but could have been executed better. I found myself rushing through the second storyline because I wanted to know how the cliffhanger I was left with concluded. Would have worked much better if the gameplay alternated evenly between the two characters, as opposed to all at once one at a time. Still a positive, challenging experience overall. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me just list all the reasons why I absolutely hate this game.

    1. Beloved character Joel died like a dog. His demise is so meaningless, created just as a plot device to push the game forward. Worse yet, you can't even get the satisfaction of revenge. Poor Ellie travelled all the way to Santa Barbara just to SAVE the murderer at the cost of her two fingers. She later tried to play the guitar but because of her lost fingers she couldn't. This is just so fking sad and ridiculous. I cried twice at the end of the game. Why ever would you do this to your fans Naughty Dog? Do you take pleasure in making us sad and miserable?

    2. Too many inconsistencies in the game. Tommy initially tries to persuade Ellie to not to go to Seattle but later got mad because she didn't want to. Abby is painstakingly shown in the game as a moral character who pets her dogs and tries to do right by people who have helped her, yet she didn't even blink to smash Joel's head in, even after Joel and Tommy just saved her life (I mean, at least show her hesitating, but Neil is too incompetent to think of this). Without Lev's intervention Abby would have slit Dina's throat, with great satisfaction that is. So much for a moral character (btw Ellie didn't know Mel was pregnant and only killed her in self-defense. This is different.). Ellie had no problem killing hundreds of people just to take revenge on Abby, yet when she finally had the chance, she gave up. (This bewilders the heck out of me.) What's worse, when she gave up, she should be thinking of the two previous occasions when Abby spared her life, which would make Ellie sparing Abby much more understandable, yet she was thinking about Joel when she stopped choking Abby. Wtf? Why didn't Ellie become angrier thinking of him? Why would she let Abby go? I can't believe a game that takes 7 years to make has so many loopholes like this.

    3. You are forced to play Abby for half of the game. Because of her actions many players DO NOT want to empathize with her. This is just another example of the terrible design of the game. If they place Joel's death at the end of the game, after they have shown Abby's backstory and struggles, then people may find it much easier to empathize with her. But ND decides Joel should die as quickly and as miserably as possible at the hands of a total stranger that is Abby, which makes it much more difficult for players to relate to her sufferings, and therefore makes people sick and disgusted the whole time they are playing as Abby. Want some proof? Just check out how many players tried to suicide Abby. I did it, many times, and it felt amazing.

    4. Shocking people for shock’s sake. Many of the scenes in the game feel unnatural, contrived, and illogical. Examples: Joel and Tommy suddenly go stupid and walk right into a group of strangers to whom they honestly confide their names; Abby’s group decide to spare Ellie’s life despite her repeated threatening of their life (the logical move was to kill her, but obviously the story has to continue); the brutal fight between Ellie and Abby at the theater can only end after Abby (played by you, who hate her guts) has killed Jessie, shot Tommy in the head, beaten Ellie to a pulp, and nearly cut Dina’s throat. There is no other way to continue the story (This is by far the single most disgusting plot design I have ever played in my entire life.). What is even more retarded, though, is Abby’s decision to spare Ellie’s life, AGAIN (…Well, it turns out in the end that this decision was actually not so bad, since Ellie also became retarded and came a long way to RESCUE her and Lev, instead of seeking revenge on her). These unnatural and illogical plot development can only be explained by the writer’s deliberate attempt at shocking the audience: Joel and Tommy suddenly become stupid because Joel has to die in a spectacular way, so **** logic, they are going right into an ambush. And of course, Ellie has to be there to witness Joel’s head becoming a golf ball (shocking as hell), so she’s there to see it and later released (stupid move on Abby’s part). I can go on but I don’t want to; you get the idea: shocking people for shock’s sake makes the story stupid and unconvincing.

    5. False advertising. This has been talked about by many people. The scenes featuring Joel in the trailer was swapped by Jessie. This is unacceptable.

    6. Too much LGBT propaganda. Ellie is lesbian; Abby is stronger than most men; Lev is trans, and Dina is bisexual. I feel like I'm watching a LGBT show than playing an actual game. I do not hate the LGBT groups but such overrepresentation of them is cheap and shadows other themes like revenge, love, and redemption.

I'm really sad at the moment, not only for the TLOU series, but also for the terrible fate that befell Joel and Ellie. I'm deeply hurt by this installment and I'll try my best to forget that it ever existed.

Gotta say that this game wasn't what I was expecting, I mean, the plot is just a bad joke compared to the first, it went from surviving an apocalyptic world, devastated by a virus from an unknown fungus, to being a generic stealth-shooter? The gameplay is great, I must say that because is the true, but what is a game if it isn't completely enjoyable and fun? You have this, a boring and repetitive game without replayability. And what to say about the last part of the game, you actually went from killing almost everybody to not killing the person that destroyed your life? Just because vengeance is bad? Killing Joel in the beginning of the game was an awful decision, specially the way they did it, turning him into a gullible character, contrasting the first game. The way they tried to make Abby into a somewhat good character with understandable intentions was pitiful, by introducing her as just a stranger to the story that just decides to kill Joel in cold blood ruins any intention of an invested player trying to understand her, making the 10/15 (!) hours that you will have to play with her painful. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game left a very bad feeling once I completed it. Let me first start off by saying this has nothing to do with the LGBTQ community since I did not mind/care about the same sex relationship or the transgender references/characters. What I did care about was the fact that the story just felt like nothing to me. From the beginning, once they announced a second game, I had a feeling Joel was going to die. It made sense, he had been around in the apocalypse for a long ass time, it was bound to happen eventually. Its important to be able to lose characters that you grow with, especially when it has the opportunity to pull out strong emotions from the audience. But this... This.. This was just too much. The fact that Joel gets smashed within the first few moments of the game was something, but the real issue I had with it was that he didnt get any honor to his death. No "I love you Ellie" or goodbyes, or anything. He is just gone, and after playing through him in the last game, growing with him over 7 years, and seeing him as the father figure he is. The developers felt it was okay to say bye bye. Which is just wrong.

As for Abby, I have not hated a character more than her. I think they could have done some good things with her, but the fact that I had to play as her for 10-15 hours of my gameplay, going through a story that I did not care about at all, and meeting characters I counted give a **** about and kind of wanted to kill right there, did not sit well with me. From the few times I would die as Abby, I laughed, because I cared that little for her character. I did not care for any of the main cast in her storyline, I did not care for the Scar children, and therefore as they all started to drop out one-by-one, I felt nothing. Nothing registered as they were killed because I did not feel anything towards the characters. The whole point of it was so that we can attempt to have some understanding and acceptance towards Abby, but that never came for me. (I'm not angry at her for killing Joel, just an f.y.i, like I said, him dying was not a bad part of the game)

Oh and don't get me started about Jessie's death. They just had to get him out of there to make it easier for Dina and Ellie to be together so he wouldn't be around with the baby. Removing a great character like that who is a strong character supporting the Asian community was just a rude idea. Laziest story writing ever.

All in all, this was a beautiful game. Design was 10/10, Gameplay itself was 10/10. It was the story and the characters which are the things that fell flat for me, and that is the biggest part of becoming attached to a game. You can make it look as pretty as you want, but you need more than graphics.

7 years. 7 fcking years and THIS is what you come up with? **** you druckman, **** you naughtydog. i would burn my copy if digital editions were flammable.

if youre considering buying this, dont. if you must, watch the spoiler videos first - if you played TLOU youll hate this and if you didnt, this game wont mean **** to you.

Most of the masterpieces gain public recognition after a long time. This game is one of them. Overall it's fantastic, deep and heavyweight. So much to think about after the final scene. Just play it. This game and its story is ahead of its time.

This game is full of bigot sandwiches. Nobody want that. Game looks good, for what they want you to see. Super linear, boring story, ugly characters making decisions that don't make sense. And a really awkward rape/love sex scene that isn't appropriate for children. Sony is ok with that though.

I understood the need to kill Joel but then to have you run around playing his killer was IMO ridiculous. Having to fight Ellie, IMO ridiculous.
Fighting Abby and losing two fingers then letting her go because you have a flashback, IMO ridiculous.

I think that if a video game get 10/10 on most sites and that’s ok, nobody can call out 0/10 reviews for being hatefull. That said, i will post my review as i can normaly do (unless I am in a dicatorship with mind control like the ones of the 20th century) and i will take a screenshot of it to prove the censorship of this website if i can’t post it or if it comes to disappear.

I rate it 0 because the fact that a game with an old gameplay (almost identical to the one from the first « The last of us » wich ca on PS3) get perfect reviews because (and it has been proved) video games websites didn’t want to lose their access from Sony makes me sick. It’s funny how the critics are unanimous but players don’t like it at all. And strangely, negative reviews begin to disappear and to be more difficult to post while positive ones still work just fine.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok if we talk about the graphics of this games, we need to agree on this, they are gorgeous, the gameplay was ok, it wasn't great but it had some upgrades and smoothness while in combat, but what hits down this game into a six, is the story, it has so many plot holes and some characteristics that characters own that have nothing to do with their characteristics in the first game. For example, Joel, Joel in the first game is an unconfident man he does not trust anyone in the first game, he literally runs over a guy because he did not trust that he was injured and he knows it was an ambush, so now tell me where are this characteristic, Joel has, he literally just trust a group of guys, tells them their real names, where they live, and for worst they tell this group of not known people if they wanted they could go get supplies in their town, that just not characteristics of Joel and Tommy they would not trust anyone. It's just stupid, and finally the ending, wow that ending could not be more trash, just very poor storytelling. What a mess. Expand

Hell I even found myself kind of liking Abby by the time of Seattle day 2 of her section of the game despite what she did to Joel in the beginning - May he rest in piece :(

I truly understand and enjoyed the take Neil Druckman took on this story as making us play as the villain and understand her in the second half. Though I still hate what she did to Joel. I understand. It was a powerful move that made me angry and depressed - which is what it's supposed to do. AKA - Not **** writing as many people claim.

Overall I really enjoyed the game, it was playing with my emotions throughout my entire play through & was keeping immersed within the universe the entire time - I thoroughly enjoyed myself

10/10 - Can't understand why it's getting so much hate, I loved it. Absolutely amazing game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's get something clear first. I have played this game from beginning to end. I just finished it today so the entire experience is as fresh in my mind as it's going to be. Frankly, it's getting extremely tiring at this point that the mainstream gaming media, naughty dog, and others such as the game's voice actors are blaming the extremely poor audience scores for this game as being caused by "bots" or people who've never played the game or have any intention to. I played the game. I'm an actual human being, not a bot. I've owned TLOU1 for years, both the original PS3 version and remastered. It's one of the best games I've ever played. With that said, TLOU2 most certainly is not.

As much as I tried to go into this with an open mind, and I tried extremely hard to be open minded about what Naughty Dog has done with the story of this game... I just couldn't really get past a lot of the glaring issues with this game's narrative. The game does have redeeming qualities and it deserves to be scored higher than say a 3 or 4. For some examples of the game's positive aspects -- the visual fidelity is genre defining and the best I've seen on a console, right up there with other titles like RDR2 or Horizon: Zero Dawn. The game also gets a lot of the finer details right. The gore and violence is some of the most realistic and unnerving I've ever seen in a game. Blowing a human or infected up with a pipe grenade looks like something straight out of "Saving Private Ryan". It is gruesome and extremely grounded in reality. The exploration is much more fleshed out in TLOU2 than TLOU1. There's sections that feel more open-ended, with some open-world elements, and due to that it feels less linear than the original did. Furthermore, the sounds and weather effects are extremely impressive. Firearms sound powerful and realistic, and a lot of games get this wrong...TLOU2 does not.

But sadly, we're already onto the negatives. This game has serious flaws in it's story-telling, and how it weaves it's narrative. The pacing is all over the place, especially in the first 5-6 hours where it's dreadfully slow. Up until you get to seattle, the intro to the game is long, boring and feels like an overdone tutorial section. As far as the story and conclusion, I'm struggling really hard to find any redeeming qualities that would let me put it up on the same pedestal as TLOU1. This game isn't a masterpiece as the critics are panning it. It's just not, and if you're being objective you know this isn't a 10/10 game. Sadly I don't think many critics are being objective with regard to this game. The game unravels pretty much all the core redeeming qualities from the first game and it tries extremely hard to tear down the original characters and build up new ones but fails in the process. By the end of the game, I felt zero sympathy for Abby or what she's suffered from and it's because of her utter lack of remorse and general actions that make me feel that way. She's a terrible human being, and even her closest "friends" remind her of this on several occasions. Ellie is pushed to do terrible things, but the entire time you see her struggling with her morality. You never once see that with Abby. As far as Joel's outcome, I think it was an utterly shallow ending to his story. It could've been executed in a much better way. Joel has wronged people, and has sinned himself. Killing him off isn't out of the question, but the way in which Naughty Dog went about his story is just insulting to fans everywhere.

The predominant feeling I had upon finishing the game is that I felt taken advantage of by Naughty Dog. I feel confused, torn, manipulated and lied to with clever tactics and trailer editing. I didn't feel enlightened. I didn't feel sad. I didn't feel angry. I just felt.... sort of used and abused. And I can't help shake that feeling. Like I said, the game has redeeming qualities and it's gameplay loop is enjoyable, albeit the game feels about 8-10 hours longer than it truly needs to be and because of the pacing issues, it starts to really drag later on. If you can get past the story's glaring weaknesses, it's worth playing through the game at least once. The stellar graphics and finer details will provide some enjoyment in between the dreadfully depressing and lackluster story beats. Is it a masterpiece? No, not even close. It doesn't even hold a candle to TLOU1. Is it utter trash, or the worst game ever made? Not quite. It's a game that couldn't live up to the incredibly high standards of the original, and it suffers for it in the end. It's an OK video game... it's a terrible The Last of Us game. As cliche as that sounds. I just felt compelled to write this review after reading so much trash about how all these negative reviews must be the result of bots. No, we're human beings too. We just expected better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not worth full prize, have we ever even seen such a bad sequel? Lets do the good first!
Gameplay is really good, the sneak mechanics are probably the best we seen so far! 10/10. The graphics are incredible, even on the regular PS4 the game looks and feels amazing! 10/10...
Now to the not so good... And i really want to do this, but the new characters in this game are utter **** They are either boring or bland or a good mix. Take Abbey for instance the only weakness she has is a fear of heights (and possibly fitting through narrow spaces), why is that? WE DON'T **** KNOW! A golden opportunity to actually flesh out a new character squandered... The only character, that's new mind you, that made me laugh was Lev for him not being able to take a joke. This makes the parts where you play as Abbey incredibly tedious and boring. 1/10. And since this is such a story and character driven game it drags it down a lot!
Ahhh... The story... It's a very, very good story... If you like logical inconsistencies and boring plot points. Lets take the biggest sin here... and spoiler warning if you haven't played the game! Joel, Ellie and Tommy would all die during their first encounter with the WLF. They have zero reason to keep them alive and they are even a liability for them, since they can ID them... And the only reason this is done for a visceral effect, where GoT managed to do this perfectly (at least the first couple of seasons) this feels like a cheap copy... And i'm not saying don't kill Joel, but this feels like killing him just to drive the story.
At the end of the day, it's a huge disappointment. Yet i'm torn between giving this game a 4 or a 5... The gameplay is really that good, but since there is no trophy for beating this on survivor and a short trophy list in general i'm going with a 4. Looks like an easy platinum though, so i guess i'll finish that before returning it to the store... #heartbroken

El juego es tan maravilloso, que ya da la posibilidad de tener las dos perspectivas, desde Abby y Ellie. Killing off one of the protagonists of the first game isn't a bad thing, but doing it in such a disrespectful way and then forcing you to play as, and try to get you to sympathize with, the person who killed him is. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know, this game really was just a massive, massive disappointment all around. I never played the first game, but I heard really good things about it, and I loved what I saw of the story! Hell, when I heard this was coming out, I was debating actually getting a console to play the game, and actually buy the sequel. I enjoyed watching the first one so, so much, and my friends loved this game. But all of this is a real slap in the face. Between the ego of Neil Druckman (who has scummy, creepy male feminist written allllll over him), the misleading marketing, and the poorly thought out damage control after the leaks - this was already looking really, really bad. And when the story that was fully released ended up being worse than I ever could have imagined - just... thank God I didn’t buy this hunk of garbage! The leaks were actually a huge help for me.

Then, when you top everything else off with a forced gay relationship for obvious pandering reasons, some seemingly anti-Christian vibes (admittedly, I don’t know tooooo much about this one, but I’ve seen glimpses of some weird commentary on religion, at least from the leaks), and other divisive subjects... well, this is just the definition of a bad modern game. And it’s a real shame considering how nice the game’s graphics and gameplay looks!

A big gripe I have personally, is that this feels like it’s just another line in the long string of forced content in media that makes me wary whenever I see a homosexual relationship in media - and I myself am gay, and I currently have a boyfriend. And honestly, it’s flat out sad to keep seeing this - as someone who’s interested in game development and world-building, I’m not sure if I should include certain characters in my games dude to the negative reputation they’ve garnered in games and media, unless gay relationships can stop being constantly politicized and used for pandering.
And honestly, I can’t say that I blame the people who eat upset with them - because honestly, I get annoyed by them now too nowadays, even if they’re not that preachy. And with this game in particular, the relationship seemed kind of off from the start. I understand that they made Ellie gay in the DLC for the first game, but to my knowledge, that was a bit more natural, but given Druckman’s increased involvement with that game, it was more likely than not inserted for political reasons.

I haven’t watched their relationship as closely (because honestly, I don’t really care about their dynamic - I was invested in Joel and Ellie’s father-daughter dynamic much, much more), but my closest friend, who, to clarify is a lesbian in an active relationship, told me it was dumb as hell, and obviously inserted to preach at the audience and please the Twitter mobs. I know that a lot of people don’t focus on this issue, mainly because they don’t want to be called an “-ist” and a “-phobe,” but I don’t think it should be dismissed - and I don’t think there’s anything wrong making fun of it, or any of the other pandering!

So, in summary, this game is a huge letdown in just about every way - heck, I don’t even really want to watch a full play through at this point, especially since I’ve seen how this ends. This game is getting the blowback it rightfully deserves, and I’m going to do my best to pretend that this entire sequel never happened, and that we just have the Last of Us - no DLC, no Part II - just a lovely, well-designed, and truly wonderful game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that's hard to hate but difficult to love.

The Last of Us Part II is a phenomenal game, there is no doubt about, but yet it still manages to be somewhat disappointing. Mechanically speaking, the game has no faults. As much as the director would claim to the contrary, the game is exactly what it sets out not to be: fun. In fact it's probably one of the most "fun" games I've played in a long time. Uncharted 4 was a game made fun via the ability to just throw up a hook and swing around, jumping and taking down enemies from above and running-and-gunning your way to the next goal. The Last of Us Part II is made fun via dodging enemy attacks, crawling under an abandoned truck and enjoying the sweet thrill of a well-placed silenced bullet in the head of an unsuspecting enemy.

The majority of my disillusion occurs within some minor technicalities with the games structure and narrative decisions. During the first day in Seattle, Ellie and Dina come across 2-3 large open areas. The first area, if you're working at trying to explore everything, can take as long as 2 hours. The next area is more about combat but features 6 or 7 large groups of around 6 enemies each within close proximity in a downtown area, which again, can take many hours to get through if you're attempting to go about it stealthy. The issue is that in being tasked to find gas, after a few hours you almost completely forget why you even needed gas in the first place. And the issue is that areas like these never really show up again. The areas certainly never reach this scope again but really I think these areas are the games weakest and never needed to be more open in the first place.

This leads into the game's biggest issue: Abby. Naughty Dog is perhaps notorious for designing massive set pieces and building a story around them. In this game though, it appears that situation has reversed and surely that should be a good thing, but I don't think it works here. The game suffers from lack of excitement and any set pieces that do feature tend to be given to Abby. It would appear that a game marketed as Ellie's game fails to give her an interesting story in comparison to Abby and a lot of it is forgettable. Ellie gets some amazing flashbacks with Joel that are the highlights of the game, but Abby has an amazing present in the game. Ellie is more likeable but Abby has more story.

When the 2016 reveal trailer was released, I was 17 finishing my final year at school and I spent almost every day in the library with Shawn James' "Through the Valley" on repeat. When Troy Baker said that the game would be divisive, I thought that it would be Joel's death that would make it so. I was wrong. It was simply the execution of the second half of the game. Playing the enemy is a concept that could work, and one that is certainly a great idea, but its not so well executed. There are moments where we feel for Abby, we laugh with her and understand her hardships but ultimately when it comes to it, no matter how humanised Abby is or demonised Ellie is, we are hot wired to side with Ellie no matter what. It is difficult at times to understand character motivations Despite what other reviews say about the supporting characters and how bland they are, they are honestly amazing characters that carry the game more than the two ladies at its helm, especially Dina.

Perhaps the game would have worked better if it wasn't sliced in half, if the main conflict took place inside the 3 days it focuses on instead of the final conflict being a year later turning Ellie into a Clementine copycat complete with missing fingers, mom haircut and child. It would have been more fun for Ellie to visit the burning Seraphite island or fight "The Rat King", but again these are given to Abby. When we get to that final showdown, despite all the time we spent with Abby, the journey there with Ellie warrants the satisfaction of Abby's death. Instead of killing her when she had the chance, our hero decides she wants some epic showdown for some reason to fuel her ego in which really she lost in the end (goodbye fingers), only to allow Abby to sail away into the sunset.
Is the story awful? No. Is it unsatisfying? Mostly. Is it realistic? I'm unsure. Is it worth experiencing anyway? Absolutely.
This may have come across as a negative review but I don't intend it to be really, as a videogame it is a phenomenal game that actually is FUN. I really wanted to love it but I couldn't help but be disheartened by the second half. And the second half could have been justified by a better ending. Why did I give it a 9/10? Because it's not awful. It deserves the praise its got. How videogames are reviewed is typically a 7 is 'average'. I do believe it's above average in design, gameplay and accessibility so, 9. The ending is what knocks it down and that Ellie literally just became Clementine 2.0. Also maybe more cutscenes.

Don't let yourself get tricked by the "professional reviews". This is the first game where I felt compelled to make an account on metacritic to warn anyone who considers buying this game.

This is a disgrace. From the deliberate false advertising of the game in the trailer and articles to the deliberate tearing down and destruction of the characters and story you grew so fond of in the first part. They spit in your face and leave you with nothing at the end of a nonsensical story. But hey - expectations subverted - that should be a 10/10 amirite folks?
This game gets a 0 from me. Not because the gameplay or scenary is bad - in fact it is really good - it gets a 0 because they sold this hot garbage on false advertisment and fed into false expectations of a continuation of the first part deliberately. I don't know if such deception counts as fraud, but it should definitely count as false advertisment and I hope a lawsuit will emerge from this.
(to clarify what i mean - they altered cutscenes in the trailer in a deliberate attempt to mask veeery important plotpoints that might have influenced your choice of buying - and the lead designer deliberately lied about the playable characters - or rather who you have to play as)

This is GOT Season 8, Star Wars Episode 7-9 or Terminator Dark Fate all over. Deconstruction of what you love, spitting in the face of fans, subverting expectations for the lulz no matter how non-sensical and contrived it has to be for that, no matter how much out of character - even if its a 180 on previous behaviours.

I repeat, do not get fooled by the professional reviewers - their jobs and future access to games for reviews depend on high ratings - they won't tell you the truth about this game. It's a hot steaming dump right into your lap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful visuals, great audio, impressive voice acting... just absolutely stunning. Fighting was as good if not better than the first game, although it felt like the listening ability was a lot less reliable this time around. It also became a running joke for us that every single door would be locked and every single ledge/floor would collapse, it become tedious after a while. The beginning of Abby’s stretch of the game was infuriatingly boring; I didn’t care about her or her friends or the WLF organization at all. It only picked up after the Scars and the children were introduced because we were finally getting new information and interesting characters. I must admit that this second section clearly did what it set out to do: by the end of Abby’s gameplay, I didn’t want her to die anymore—which is saying something since I REALLY wanted to kill her for the entire first half of the game. Yara and Lev really saved her as a character because she suddenly reminded me of Joel. Let’s just say that by the final fight, I was extremely emotional. I honestly wouldn’t change the ending at all. Also, cheers for exploring how queer people would exist in this new world; each person is clearly a character who is queer instead of “The Queer Character^tm” that some creators use for brownie points. Overall, an amazing game that made me very depressed and then gave me just enough hope to keep going. Expand

I’ve never felt so empty after playing a game in my life. I really have mixed emotions about this game. It was definitely one of the saddest games of all time, but not in a good way. I felt the parts where you played as Ellie were great. I enjoyed her bond with Dina and Joel, even if we only see him a few times in the entirety of the game. I despised Abby as a character. Naughty Dog expected us to play for hours as her character, and actually like her after what she did to Joel. I couldn’t stand playing as her and I thought that portion of the game was terrible. I don’t think Joel’s death was executed well at all. In the first game he is shown to be smart during the apocalypse, yet in this one he is sloppy and let’s himself get ambushed and killed. He died too early and in a way that just felt offensive. The graphics and atmosphere are incredible, the combat is good and it was satisfying killing the WLF members, but the ending to this game was god awful. It felt so disrespectful to let Abby live and have Ellie be the one suffering loss. The two characters we loved in the first game are treated so disrespectfully in this one, and the ending just made me feel so empty. I really hope that if there’s a next instalment to the series that Naughty Dog learn from this. And I hope to god we don’t play as Abby or let her survive. Expand

I was immensely disappointed by this game. The story in it for a story game and for a sequel to the first where the story was one of the best stories I have ever seen, is nothing less then disappointing.

Scoring: graphics 9/10 sound 9/10 acting 9.5/10 gameplay 5/10 (did not innovate gameplay at all over the course of 7 years) story 2/10 (bland revenge story that has been overused)

    graphics 9/10

story 2/10 (bland revenge story that has been overused)

I got to a 3/10 because for a story driven game where the story is bland none of the technical achievements mean much, when you cant enjoy and buy into a story the ends about half way through, you already know who dies and what happens to side characters there isnt much in the way of surprises for roughly 10 hours because you can use your intuition and know exactly what is going to happen within those 10 hours your playing, Its also weird to see a story teller try to manipulate you into liking a character that is inherently evil and is proven to be this way constantly throughout the game. While they try and convince you the beloved character is the evil one for defending them self and being forced to do certain things that they could've worked around easily or avoided. This game is also not getting bad reviews because everyone who doesn't enjoy it is a homophobe because that would be quite the dilemma for me being a bi male it portrays the LGBT+ characters as ones who lash out when people defend them and not accepted by anyone but 1 person which is a shame because of how progressive this game is. It doesn't serve the community well at all as it paints it as a community that just wants to stand for itself and lash out at people trying to protect them and defend them from bigots, and for the trans character there are only 2 people who accept him which isnt a message (I'm not trans but I have a feeling that they wouldn't want to be shown this message) someone who is trans or is transitioning shouldn't be worried about is people to accept them for who they are. Overall the progressiveness missed the mark by having a negative light on most of the things that are concerned with sexuality and how people feel inside and how other refuse to accept them and when they are accepted they lash out at the people who accept them and defend them it makes us look horrible and its a shame they felt the need to go in this direction with the progressive characters. Finally if you see people saying the game is supposed to realistic and it wont have respectable deaths for every character, I raise one question, and that is how are women who are pregnant able to do things the average human probably couldn't with as much ease as they have doing the specific task to me it seems weird to make an argument about how the game is supposed to be ultra-realistic then have viably pregnant women go to the front lines and perform very demanding tasks.

All of the above is the reason I gave this game a 3/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Genuinely **** awful story. They crapped all over Joel’s character, and THEN DOESN’T EVEN LET YOU KILL THE STUPID, overdeveloped surgeon NPC characters kid that did it. Don’t know who wrote this, but they must have a set agenda as it is painstakingly obvious as well the more you play. They make you play as the villain for a stupid amount of time, and (S)he has a sex scene which made me want to vomit. A lot of the interactions are awkward as hell as well. Now that I am past the bad, here’s the good. The gameplay is beautiful, and detailed. The animations are smooth and work well almost all the time. The combat system is good, but a tad wonky sometimes, and Dina is apparently fully invisible to enemies. So yeah, that’s my review. Expand

Nothing wrong with it, and people providing negative attitudes towards the game with only the argument of “transgenders” & “lesbians” obviously can’t appreciate marvellous writing and game design and are not open to such a unique and perfectly built world. Most people who have complained about the game have really only said one thing “Naughty Dog is trying to force an agenda and ideology down our throat, all while attempting to make white men appear weak.” Those people are the type to think that there is a political stage to everything And must add their own views to all discussions. But if you look at the game AS A GAME, then it’s clear that the devs tried their hardest to provide the more appreciative side of the audience with an emotional masterpiece that leaves you in love with almost all the characters. The only Two problems i had with the game were, no1, Joel dying in such a shameful way (which i know had to happen in order to have a plot at all) and, no2, how extensively they tried to justify the ,bad guys’ decisions... i feel as though a simple extended cutscene would of been perfect, but alas, the devs can’t appeal to everyone and i get that Amazing game, included all the aspects of the first yet also taking a new approach, true nostalgia trip, 10/10. Naughty Dog did not go that here, which is surprising for a company that usually does amazing things with their games. Within the first two hours of the game, a major character acts against his or her established characteristics, trusting strangers when after a full game had shown that he it she never trusts new people. This is an incredibly lazy way to deal with a major plot development. The story overall is a run of the mill revenge plot and poses little in the way of actual character development. New relationships lack anything of substance, reminding me heavily of Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman in the prequel Star Wars films. Graphically, this game is astounding, and as the PS4's lifecycle ends, will easily be the best looking game on the platform. The gameplay is a more refined version of the first, with fewer environmental puzzles, but amazing physics on the rope. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first game's combat, but the characters kept me invested. This is not the case here. Instantly, I despise the villain and the game devs for what happens. I expected this event to happen, but the way it feels is less like Obi-Wan and much more like Han Solo. So, having despised the villain, I expected to relish in the revenge, but I didn't. I didn't want to kill random people that are close to the villain, I want to kill the villain. There is a section of 10 hours in the game where you are forced to play as said villain, in a shallow attempt to make you empathize, but it does nothing. I had to put the game down and I won't be picking it back up. I have seen the end, and I'm glad I didn't waste anymore of my time. Thankfully, I borrowed a friend's disk, as he didn't even want to continue after that initial event. Overall, there was no enjoyment in this game. After all, Graphics does not a game make. Expand
