I've now completed The Last of Us Part II twice and I am really impressed with the game. I also replayed the first game recently to make sure any comparisons I make are meaningful.

    Story:
Continuing from the end of the first game, Last of Us Part II focuses on Ellie as the key protagonist. Without spoiling the game, Ellie's journey is full of difficult choices and weighty character moments and I found myself gripped. There are additional characters introduced in this game. Standout is Abby, a new character who parallels with Joel's journey from the first game. There are sections where you play as Abby and I found her gameplay to be a refreshing change from sections playing as Ellie.
Overall the focus of the story is a revenge mission made of two parts. Again I won't go into too much but the ending is satisfying and sets up for Part III whilst also being a definitive end to this part. I found the story to be more realistic than the first game. Characters question their actions more here, and murdering hordes of people is no longer just a 'by product' of a journey, but part of a clear story narrative. The writers have also been brave with the story choices. I was particularly impressed with the representation in this game. There are numerous characters introduced from BAME backgrounds and there are characters tackling issues linked to sex and gender identity. This doesn't feel shoe-horned, but rather a natural reflection of the world we live in, not the make belief all white world you see in most games.
Focusing on multiple story lines, does at points make deviate a little from the overall narrative, but not so much that it hinders the story.

    Gameplay:
The new elements added to Part II are great. Part stealth, part frantic action, most fighting sections left me running around looking for resources to stay alive. With the introduction of new enemy types, the game stays fresh whilst refining what was good in the first. I'm particularly impressed with the enemy AI which is more reactive than ever. Especially the dogs, which as a dog lover, I must say I hated them by the end of the game.
Weapon mechanics are similar to the first game but better. On one end you can craft silencers for your pistol, on the other you can craft explosive arrows. I did two runs and in the first I was largely stealthy and made use of the ability to craft arrows and silencers. On the other I went in loud, making use of explosive ammo and bombs. Either way there are plenty of tools for the job.
This game also ups the horror elements. Now the infected are scarier than ever and there are a few scenes which particularly shook me up. New infected types are introduced and they are a great additional challenge to the game.

    Sound:
The music is as excellent as ever with the score from Gustavo Santaolalla bringing a great ambience to the game. I played the game with noise cancelling headphones and found the soundtrack immersive and powerful. There are moments where the soundtrack really builds as the character is grappling with tough emotional decisions, and of course, when you are running for your life.
The sound effects are also better this time. Guns sound punchy and the infected sound scarier than ever.

    Overall:
If you loved the first game, you will also love this game. The characters have grown in weight and complexity and the gameplay is fine tuned to perfection. It is the only game this console gen I have immediately replayed and I look forward to doing so again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

I would like to see The Last of us Part 2 with the same characters but a different story . I would like a Story that is about The Relationship between Ellie and Joel and a Story where Joel doesn’t die Maybe something like : Abby finds out where Joel is and she tries to find him an kill him and Joel and ellie have to run away or something like that . I would appreciate it much more to see a this story then the story we got .

The story wouldn’t be good. There’s so much emotion and brought me to tears several times. Ellie’s statements when killing and just little comments and her visible discomfort and ptsd is shown so well and even with Abby who at first playing as made me annoyed, was made so well that I ended up feeling bad for her and her story. The ending showed Ellie as human, and Joel’s death, though very sad, brought the game together, with Ellie and Joel’s visible desperation emotionally and ending on bad terms, you could see Ellie break down and loose herself. And that’s what I love about it. It’s Ellie’s story. And her life, and gives another POV. Amazing game 10/10 would play again Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics 9/10
Sounds 10/10 (best I had ever heard if not perfect, the closest it can get)
Lights 9/10 all of these things are amazing and top notch... but the story, man... I think it is a nice story, it was well done but very very poorly executed... Joel’s death... I understand these people hate him and the way they killed him, sure... Joel had it coming, he killed a lot of people, he was not a good guy but we still loved him, in our eyes he was justified, he was a good guy (objectively he wasn’t)... I expected and wanted Joel to die so we would have a purpose but just not this way... The decisions made by Joel in the second game was just plain stupid... and let’s accept that he **** up and got himself bashed by a golf club sure, the more blood the better but then I don’t wanna play as the woman who killed him for 10 hours... that is just boring, there is no redemption for Abby, I don’t wanna connect with her after she killed Joel, maybe if they made me connect with Abby first and then she killed Joel, I would still be angry but I would of not quit playing 50 times while playing as Abby because it was just pointless... I just hope the third game ain’t gonna be this dark and pointless, they just made Ellie suffer (Sure, she went on revenge instead of living her life and so when she comes back she has nothing left) I understand that but it was just not worth playing to be honest, I would have rather just leave everything as they were in the first game... In short, technically this game is amazing 9/10 (It can never be perfect), story wise (which matter to me the most) good story but super **** execution so 5/10 (-5 for **** execution, +5 for the story itself) and not worth full price...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everyone hating on this game needs to play it through again, and this time they have to pay more attention to the story, not just Joel's death. Yes, Joel's death was sudden and brutal, but that's just a reflection of the game. They didn't just kill him and then he wasn't in the game anymore, there were flashbacks and the whole plot revolves around him. He is very much present throughout the game. Playing as Abby was kind of like a punch to the gut, for the first part of the game we'd been told to want her dead. But then we see that, really, she's not that bad and not that different from Ellie. That's another astounding part of this game, the way that it shows us time and time again how brutal Ellie is, and how we should technically want her dead too. But we'll never want Ellie dead because... we just wouldn't, and it's something the game does so well, building up our support and love for the protagonists (for example Joel, a very flawed character who we loved) The graphics, well, they were undeniably amazing, the scene where Abby is climbing over Seattle is phenomenal and something I've never seen in a video game before. Seattle itself looks incredible, the Infected are almost too realistic at times, it's all done so well. This game was gut-wrenchingly brutal, it makes you do things you'll hate, not only in the killing sense, but even when someone says "Let's cut through this building," it fills you with dread. More than once I crawled through a dark, abandoned building in silence, breath held for when the clicker would jump out at me, but then nothing happens and I felt stupid for being so apprehensive. Overall, this game was well worth the wait, it hits you in all the right ways and doesn't always heal the wounds it leaves, something I loved about it. Expand

But the main reason why I loved and still do love the game, was because of the interactions between Ellie and Joel. How Joel found in his heart to love again despite what other people did to his daughter and how Ellie found a person whom she could trust to always be there for her.

I never found any love for the fireflies as they wanted to kill a child for a vaccine that was not even guaranteed to work, and how the hell would they even deliver said vaccine or produce it in a post apocalyptic world? Anyway, the second game is beautiful beyond belief and I am certain it was made for the ps5 first and foremost and that we will see the true magnificent visuals when that console arrives.

But stunning visuals only do so much and even if the game succeeds with representation and also have some really intense action scenes, the story is boring and really not even close to the first game at all. The story is a **** and I am disappointed and I never could have dreamed that the story would be so bad. Yes, the story is dark and gritty but that is also more or less all it is, there are no light to search for when the one is in the darkness. The ending is a catastrophe and I am certain most people will not be happy or even content with it.

I will be honest as I do not think this game is a zero nor is it a ten. People giving the game a zero are but hurt little spoiled brats and people giving it a ten are virtue signaling SJWs. I have nothing against any ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion and the game is not bad because of representation, it is bad despite of representation.

I would give it a 5 out of 10 because it is a gorgeous looking game with gameplay that is ok but not as good as one would expect after such a long time between the first game and this game. The story is literally trash and seems to been have written by someone that is both blind and deaf when it comes to have a feeling for the soul that was present in the first game. Do not buy if you loved the first game for the story, buy it if you really love the gameplay from the first and would love to kill hundreds of people and mushroom-people.

Whilst playing part 2 I thoroughly enjoyed the graphics and details. The added fighting and weapon upgrades and the acting. But the storyline absolutely sucked. Not only was the main protagonist of the first game killed off but I then had to play half of the game as his killer, . Which only made me lose interest even more. I had no sympathy for Abby, I did not want to see any development or know her background I hated it that much! Naughty dog had clearly taken a number of aspects that were used in Uncharted which is understandable but unnecessary. I feel that naughty dog simply could not come up with a long enough storyline to compete with part 1 that they decided to take the risk of making the player play abbey for 10 hours. Voice acting is spot on and gameplay generally satisfying, although as the game progressed, it started to get a little repetitive. It mostly consists of getting to an area, clearing it of enemies or sneaking past and repeating this process. It's still fun, you can take them out silently, go guns blazing or set up traps.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah, personally I didn’t really enjoy the game.
It’s not just the Joel death for me, I think most people expected him to die in the second game but I think they executed it poorly.

I thought the newer characters were pretty eh, I kinda felt like Dina and Ellie's relationship was pretty cringy (nothing to do with them being a same-sex couple) I just didn't feel the connection between them, it kinda felt forced. I liked Jesse, I thought he had potential to grow as a character, but they killed him in the most crappy shock value way.

But I think the biggest issue with this game is the sloppy organization of how you see events take place.

Also the ending felt extremely dragged on, I felt like the game had plenty of time to show that Ellie learned that revenge is bad, and they could have just ended it with her and Dina living on the farm, but they really wanted to drive home the point that revenge is bad, so Ellie has to go try to kill Abby. Which if you're gonna go with that then you really need to go through with it. Have Ellie kill Abby, and lose everyone in the process, but instead she lets her live, and loses everyone in the process anyways. Otherwise, if they wanted to keep Abby alive, they could have ended the game on the farm with Ellie realizing that revenge isn't a good path.

Overall I’d rate The Last of Us 2 a 4 out of 10 but I definitely think it had the potential to be an 8 out of 10.

I started this game off already seeing very many leaks that I did not really try to avoid because I’m weak! I had a very negative mind set after see the leaks and was praying what I saw wasn’t real. Going into the game I tried to prepare myself hoping I can find some enjoyment, then it happened... the part everyone is so broken up about! I was pissed and felt betrayed by the company I have grown to love so much. But I trudged on hoping for some sort of real meaningful reason for this decision. I had many highs and lows playing as Ellie, from the many gorgeous sceneries of Seattle to some of the scarier parts like dealing with the scars. The game is beautiful and a lot of passion was put into its world. The soundtrack pulled everything together wonderfully and Ashley had some amazing moments singing and playing the guitar. Everything lead up to a moment where I thought I’d finally come around and it would all makes sense in the end. But it didn’t.. very quickly you are thrown in and force to try and side with Abby (which I really was not about in the beginning). Her story is one of many I’m sure in the world of the last of us that have very bad things happen, I mean it is a post apocalyptic world and nothing is ever going to go as we want it. It was interesting and at times fun and very scary to see the way her story played out. But there was one thing that really stuck in my mind as my time went on with Abby. It was that this game didn’t feel like the last of us anymore. It felt so much like a stand alone game like uncharted lost legacy. It was nice but I bought the last of us to play the last of us.. through all my time I was really just trying to get back to the moment we were all waiting for. I did come around to Abby eventually more so just kind of understanding that she just like everyone else has there reasons for doing things. But I wanted to get back to playing the game I bought. Finally I get back to the moment I was waiting for hoping for a meaningful and satisfying conclusion to what both of these character have been working towards for 20+ hours. But that did not happen, instead we got a very out of character and misleading End. So we thought..

As this point in the game I’m frustrated and confused but still trying to understand where there going with the game. We see things left off on a higher note with Ellie and Dina on a beautiful farm. But it was very short lived.. out of character and misleading again.. we are yet again sent on our mission to continue what we started this journey to do. Somewhat saddened that we left what would have been a good ending and a “somewhat” satisfying conclusion to this story, I set off to finish what was intended of this game. Finally coming to a conclusion after 25 hours of play time we were mislead once again in thinking we might have some sort of relief.. but once nothing happened and you’re left with the question of why?? Why did I did all of this? What was the point of it? I’ve been trying to figure out what the point of it all was but still feel that there was no rewarding aspect. No actual conclusion. The last scene of the game left me saddened. I don’t feel that there was any care or respect put towards these characters.. I felt cheated and felt that naughty dog through Ellie and Joel in the mud. FOR WHAT?? I don’t believe that every game needs a sequel and I feel this is proof of that.. This next part is going to sound really stupid and I’m sure I’ll get a lot of **** for it.. this may not make sense but the game is a disastrous master piece.. it’s very beautiful and made me feel a lot of things most games don’t make you feel. It will definitely stay in my mind for a long time But it issues are so huge that it hurts it. In other words the best parts of the game are so amazing there masterful but the worst part feel so so low..

    ________
I really want to rate this game higher.. The game is incredibly atmospheric and customizable for how you want to play it - have a true survival experience or breeze through the game as if it was nothing. a ton of accessibility options, the best I've seen to date. Lots of eye candy. Definitely for mature audiences only.

    The good:
    ________
Gameplay felt really good, I liked the crafting and upgrade system and the fact that you had to explore to get resources and improve your skill tree. Several collectibles, which, I will give you points for ingame unlocks of some artwork and concept art along with some behind the scenes insights. Some of the puzzle mechanics were really nice, rope puzzles made me feel a little creative. and combat felt tactical and stealthy. There are times when it does give you a fair amount of action gunplay to change the pace, but I felt like it was almost my choice of how to approach each step. Cut scenes are skipabble and are completely seamless between each encounter/puzzle and gives you complete immersion while telling the story.

    The critique:
    _________
I really wish we had gotten an ending where we could have just somehow sided with one or the other character getting their sweet revenge. I thought the story was okay, after reading many reviews from other players and fans of the original, I understand their unhappiness with some of the character's actions. Its a game thats meant to shock your system as much as possible and prove a point. Its cool to have 2 completely different, badass girl characters and very different perspectives. I wish you could replay the game just from one or the other's characters perspective, and have an "alternate" ending where you actually go through with the revenge kill at the end. My first impressions of the game were actually very positive, I couldn't put the controller down, it was captivating. I would say that some of the story/ending felt a bit dragged towards the end or maybe a little incomplete even. They really really tried to one up on their previous TLOU title and they *almost* made it. Unfortunately, the way the game ended was a complete downer after making you go through a large amount of adrenaline-packed gameplay. It has some replay value, so there's that, too.

If you haven't played the original, this game will definitely blow you away.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start by saying what I did enjoy about the game; visually, this game is ways ahead of anything I’ve seen on this system, it’s crazy to think what it would’ve looked like on next gen. Attention to detail on shading, lighting, combat, it was top tier. The first 13 hours of this game we’re magnificent. They did a good job at not making anything feel stale as tome went by, rewarded players who tirelessly loot, and reconnected with that Last of Us feel where at times the character you love makes rash decisions that you’re just along with for the ride. Okay now that that’s out of the way, let’s move on to the cluster **** and **** show that is the writing. By now it’s no surprise anymore that we have to extensively play as Brock Lesnar... I mean Abby, the baby silverback gorilla who violently murders Joel. Throughout Abbys gameplay it’s clear there are two motives the devs are trying to shove down your throat; 1) the whole perspective of Joel’s murder, therefore seeing the events that transpired through Abby’s eyes. 2) in that, there is a feeling they are trying to force you to sympathize and forgive Abby as a player. Now all jokes aside, it’s something they had all the elements to almost pull off but execution was subpar. They have you jump into her shoes after killing one of the only two likable new characters. And 30 minutes after being given the reigns to Abby’s lenses, they show you Joel’s murder again. I understand the point was to show how she had a motive debatably as real as Ellie’s. But the problem with it (as is apparent throughout the story) is that the portrayal shows little emotion of lack of satisfaction having accomplished her goal, or questioning of self motives or decisions as is apparent when Ellie commits similar acts. Then toward the end of Abby’s completely dragged out campaign they force you to nearly kill Ellie, beating her severely and almost killing Dina. Granted, this is after Abby discovers Ellie murdered a number of her companions. But again. As a player I didn’t give a single f**k about any of those deaths because the story failed to have me connect with Abby. I understand but I didn’t care. They did all of this after you see her murder a beloved character. Best analogy I can give us this: if your father or any other family member was mercilessly murdered and tortured in front of you, by someone who’s life he had saved 1 hour ago, you WOULD NOT CARE about his killers background or motives. Even if you discovered your father killed the others years ago. And that’s the fundamental problem. Joel wasn’t a messiah or prefect or by any means a great man. But I’m connected to him and have a love for him and Ellie. So no matter wtf is said or done I can understand but I’m not gonna care about Abby or forgive her. Even though I’ve already spoiled aspects of the game I won’t spoil the exact details of the very end. But it was so anticlimactic and unnecessary. The game could’ve ended a hour or two earlier when Tommy visited the farm, and could’ve conveyed that Ellie learned the same lesson or finally reached the deeper understanding. Without losing everything. Or even after the kitchen scene before California, and that whole section could’ve been a part of Part 3 and expanded upon it. But no. All it did was kind of frustrate and confuse the life out of players. To wrap this up, again I say, I think this game has all of the scenes and elements to be a great game. To really convey the message and meaning they are trying to. But the execution was simply lack luster, ineffective, and drawn out. Caused by a multitude of things from forced agendas (i.e. Ellie kill dog = she’s bad. Abby save Zebra = she’s good) to poorly placed scenes and encounters that, if rotated around, could better tell the story. NOTE: I did just finish the game a few hours ago. We all know that given time our perspectives can change. So in a week I may see some bigger picture and think this falls more in the 6 or 7 range, or I may “dig my heels in the ground” and have my stance affirmed. These are my opinions. The only way to know for sure is to play for yourself. Just rent it. Or wait for a price drop. Expand

However after the dead of a know person happens, you get a shock and then when the story start to get the climax you start playing as Abby? Da hell, I wanted to really gave a ten to this game but I was a little disappointed, and after everything you spent looking for her. She gets off with no revenge at all. I give the game a 7, it was not that bad. But the story has too many empty spots in which naughty dog filled with the Abby part. Expand

Things happened in the game that make Ellie go on her revenge tour and they need to happen. The gameplay although not greatly changed is brilliant. In terms of movement of character and character abilities, there isn’t much you can change as they are not super natural but Ellie moves faster than Joel and is more athletic which does to lead to come good movement momentum moments. Being able to dodge, go prone, again although small in the greater picture do so much to freshen up game play. I would have loved to have seen some type of gameplay involved with the rope physics. That could have used to make traps if you carried a rope around with you. You could place it on the group to trip NPC’s. You could place it between doors at neck height, attract the infected to run into it and trap them. It’s a one time use as once it’s triangled you’ll need to retrieve it kind of thing. The world they have created is beautifully horrific. Dilapidated buildings, overgrown friends it’s just stunning. The sound design is all time great. Rain splashes, gunshots, voice active it’s a masterclass on immersion.

The only moment in the game where I actually felt disgusted is 3/4 of the way through the game when things come together, you are forced into a fight that NOBODY would ever want to be in. It’s does give you some insight into how your opponent actually fights but it’s just so hard.

This game is a masterpiece in gameplay and eliciting emotion for the player.

    - Amazing graphics

    - Great voice acting

    Cons
    - repetitive gameplay (based in one area. never feels like you're moving forward in the story.)
    - unlikable characters shoved down our throats
    - lack of character developments (not once did I care for any other character besides the ones from the first games.)
    - questionable gameplay decisions (making us fight a character we love making them feel like the villain. made for one of the most uncomfortable gaming experiences.)
    - poor story (final sequence felt like it was made up on the spot. There is still little known about the rattlers and why they are so important in that moment.)

    SPOILERS ALERT

I never wrote a review in my life, I never wanted to go on the internet and talk about a game or how a particular game changed me for better or worse. But this time I could not hold back the sadness that this game carries.

In the first game you build love between Joel and Ellie. I ask you now my dear player, if someone took Ellie from Joel, if someone dared to hurt Ellie, do you know what Joel would do? If you played the first game you know what he would do because he did what had to be done to save her, and in the second game he says to Ellie that if GOD gave him another chance to change things, he would do everything the same, exactly the same way, and with those words at the end of the conversation he is crying because he knows that he is not perfect but he loves Ellie and nothing else matters.

I know it, the fans know it, Ellie knows it because when Joel was already dead and Ellie was talking to Tommy, she said if it were any of them, Joel would already be halfway to Seattle to settle things. This game has no replay factor, do you want to play for another 30 hours watching Joel being massacred, tortured with golf club on his head? do you want to see people spitting in the face of Joel while he dies? Do you want to remember the face of Uncle Tommy after surviving a gunshot to the head asking for your help in your home while you refuse to avenge Joel? Do you want to see Ellie for 20 hours passing through the valley of the shadow of death feeling guilty for not forgiving Joel and the day she forgave him, the next day they kill him ?? do you want to see Joel's last scene being him crying ?? Want to spend another 10 hours playing with Joel's killer ?? Want to play a game where they lied in the trailers making animations that do not exist in the game suggesting an adventure between Joel and Ellie ???

The last of us part 2 founded its bizarre success on lies. Towards the end, the director still has the courage to take Abby and make her crucified, tortured, starving, having the skin practically leaving her body by being trapped in the sun in the middle of several bodies for when you arrive at your destination with Ellie and get her revenge, feel like **** and feel guilty about wanting to fight her. The fight starts with Ellie passing the knife several times on Abby's body, who doesn't have the strength to even stand, the director puts you in a position for you to feel trash and feel like a bastard even at the time of your revenge, keep putting flashbacks of Joel's disfigured face to create hatred and in the final scene you lost 30 hours and nothing happened, Ellie let Abby go and still lost 2 fingers, even the damn guitar she can't play anymore. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't find it right to kill Abby in those conditions, I wanted a fair fight between Abby in her ordinary state and Ellie in her ordinary state, Ellie calling the Joel's killer out of her boat and saying that it would end there once and for all. Have you seen john wick? Imagine him reaching the end of the film's story, after having killed hundreds of people, finding the killer who killed his dog and saying that he will let him go because revenge doesn’t lead to anything. The last of Us part 2 has no replay factor, unless you want to spend another 25 hours watching everyone you know die and in the end do not avenge the death of the guy who loved you most in all the last of us story .
So far, Uncle Tommy's face has not left my head in disappointment when he finds out that he can no longer count on Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is not a bad game, it's just not a great one.
Visually, it's stunning, I have no idea how they got these kinds of visuals out of a PS4, the sound design is also fantastic and really added to the horror of the game at times. Both these things really help to sell the atmosphere of this bleak, miserable and destroyed world. But this is pretty much where my praise ends.

The gameplay though initially satisfying with vicious kill animations quickly gets stale when you realise that there is a single stealth take down animation and that this is just a 2013 PS3 game with a shiny new coat of paint, after 12 hours I was more then ready for it to end, but I was all too aware of the fact that this game boasts around 20 hours. I was similarly bored by the gameplay of the first game as the first time I played it was in 2019, however the story and characters made me stick around as I was engrossed in their struggle. And this is where the game's largest issues pop up.

THE CHARACTERS are just bad, they are not interesting, they are not enjoyable to see on screen, and when eventually I kill off he vilains I feel nothing as I know nothing about them, and the game knows this, that's why we get shock twists like 'she was pregenant, aren't you a monster'. My largest issues with the characters come with Ellie, I like Ellie, but not the Ellie you play, I like Journal Ellie, because now Ellie has a journal where she draws and writes down her thoughts amongst other things, but the Ellie in the journal and in-game Ellie feel like 2 completly different characters, because Journal Ellie says a lot about how she feels, but in-game Ellie never acutally shows it, they are 2 seperate entities. You get to learn more about the characters you slaughter later in the game where you play as Abby, and this was just an absolute slog, I did not care for abby and I did not care for any of her firends, which really did not help when I was supposed to feel bad for killing them.

The ending is also just a massive cliche like most of the story, I've seen this story before, I've seen it done far better before it's just a very generic revenge thriller.

Gameplay was pretty good, not great by today’s standards, but good enough. The stealth was fantastic though it’s too easy unless on hard difficulty. Story was a roller coaster of emotional reactions...REAL emotions. When Ellie finds the guitar in the farm house and sings one of my favorite songs (I still get chills whenever I hear that song)...

The ending (no spoilers) left a bad taste in my mouth, but I think that was the point. Final battles felt like I was being tortured with a golf club.... I was somewhat disappointed by the ending when it was over but in retrospect it was the only way it could have ended and still have been an effective story. This was one of the best and worst gaming experiences of my life.... I don’t think I will ever replay it but I don’t think I want to. This was a work of art, truly brilliant. This is a very hard review to write - there are parts of the story I adored beyond words, and there are parts that I hated to the point of very nearly putting down my controller and walking away. And yet... I'm so very glad I never did.

Without spoiling anything, it's safe to say that there were some pretty extreme narrative risks taken in this production. Even having reached the end, it left me not satisfied, not happy - but rather, sad, confused, empty. I spent days pouring over the experience, trying to untangle the mess of emotions I was feeling (yes, still, days later) - and over time grew to accept, then grudgingly admire, then downright cherish the experience I've just played (lived) through.

It's not a 10/10. There are some frustrating bits even outside of narrative, and while I did enjoy the story overall, I can't help but think that something could've been done to pace it better. And good grief I would've killed for an actual choice towards the very end... But this is largely nitpicking.

Final verdict: I don't regret a single dollar, nor a single hour, I've spent on this game. It made me feel like **** but only because it wanted me to - never unintentionally. It's certainly a game that will challenge you not so much as a player, but as a human - and I while I appreciate that, not everyone will. Yet in my eyes, the biggest testimony to its achievement is the hole it's left behind. What other game could possibly measure up at this point?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After my first play through I thought it was a good, but not great game with a lot of story issues. Ultimately the gameplay and graphics are both 10/10 but the story just falls flat for me.

First, the things that I liked:

    1. I loved the visuals and graphics. It's definitely the best looking game on the PS4, along with U4, RDR2, and TLOU1.

    2. I loved the entirety of Ellie's part of the game. I could honestly play as Ellie for hours and never be bored. I think she's definitely my favorite character.

    3. I liked that all the characters have motivations, are morally grey, and have motives behind their actions. That is something I've always liked and I'm glad ND decided to do that to their characters.

    4. The actual gameplay, especially the combat and the stealth, seem improved from the first game.

    5. I actually liked a lot of the new characters, especially Ellie's group. Not so much Abby's group except for Owen.

    6. I actually loved the final fight between Ellie and Abby and liked the ending. I'm ok with Ellie deciding not to kill Abby even though I felt like Abby should have died.

    7. The worldbuilding was an added bonus I didn't expect. It felt very Fallout-y, which is a good thing.

With that said, there are quite a few negatives that also brings this game down significantly:

    1. I don't buy Joel's actions in the prologue. I find it odd that Joel and Tommy were so willing to give up their names to a stranger even if they were trying to help her. They had to have known that people were coming after him to try and kill him, so I don't know why Tommy and Joel didn't have aliases for strangers that they don't know. Especially since both Tommy and Joel know what Joel did in the first game.

    2. Abby isn't a bad character, I empathized with her and understood where she came from and why she did certain things, but I didn't really enjoy playing as Abby. So it was quite a chore for me to play as Abby for 10-12 hours straight. I much preferred Ellie, and I found it a strange decision to have all the Ellie Days first, then switch to Abby for essentially the rest of the game.

    3. I hated fighting Ellie as Abby. I guess it's mainly because I really like Ellie and I think she's a much better person than Abby is so it was frustrating playing as the person I thought was morally worse than Ellie and trying to kill them.

    4. While Lev isn't a bad character, I honestly didn't understand why the entire Abby storyline revolved around him and Yara. I found it an odd writing decision to not even mention Ellie at all during Abby's storyline, or at the very least, not mention that a "trespasser" is causing trouble in the WLF portions of the city and they don't know who or what it is. The only time we see Ellie is at the theater when Abby confronts them.

    5. Other than Owen and maybe Lev I didn't really like any of the characters in Abby's side.

    6. There were some serious pacing issues with Abby's part of the story, which I felt dragged for a while with no real plot progression to the main storyline.

    7. Not having a moment where Abby comes to realize that killing Joel wasn't worth it, especially after helping out Lev and Yara, was a missed opportunity and an odd writing choice. Especially since we could have empathized with Abby even more if she came to realize in the end that killing Joel wasn't worth it.

    8. I had quite a few glitchy moments.

I think I'm being generous with a 7/10. Its a fun game for the first half, but playing as Abby for 10-12 straight hours is quite a chore and messed with the pacing of the game. It is a fun and entertaining game though with great visuals and gameplay. So I think a 7 is appropriate here.

This game is awesome! The Ellie's revenge journey is a big history, the Naughty dog worked in a big game. One of the best games of the PS4 generation. I'm really excited for a part III. Thanks naughty dog.

I understand why people feel how they feel about the story, but honestly you can't look at this game and say it's not one of the best looking, immersive, well acted and well developed games ever released. If you're reading through user reviews to gage whether or not to get the game, go ahead and look somewhere less polarized.

The game is quite fun to play, the animations, graphics, sound design are top notch, with me being personally fond of ellie in this game and filling in some the blanks of what happened after the first game. But when characters that seem important to the story turn out to just be set pieces it isn't very satisfying and playing as the second main character seems more annoying to me than anything in the game

SPOILER REVIEW: the beginning of the game seems nice at a moments glance but as it continues it picks up to much pace with Joel's death seeming very rushed and forced for the plot, when he died i was more disappointed than sad. The rest of the game with dina and ellie is fun i like the chemistry between them and how it feels more real than some games which is a welcome addition. Then comes the part in which you play as Abby, Joel's murderer. Abby is unlikable from the get go as should be of no suprise since she killed a beloved main character from the first game, her only redeeming quality being the friendship formed with lev who is much more likable than abby. The ending seemed like a slap in the face, with ellie about to kill abby and then says 'nah nevermind' and they all go home. With ellie being left completely alone like she said she was afraid of happening in the first game and with abby having a happier ending than ellie, with abby being able to start over with lev as a person, but ellie is just left depressed and alone. Overall the game is great for its presentation but is not so great for it's substance in storytelling being more disappointing of a game than anything. Again, this is my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a masterpiece of storytelling that subverts our cultural love for justified violence. There are many people who criticize this game for not giving a satisfying ending, but that isn't the point of the story. So many are calling for a "good guy vs bad guy" story instead, but our culture is already flooded with those. That kind of story is easy to do. Letting Joel live would have been easy to do. Letting Ellie kill Abby would have been easy to do. Go watch a superhero movie if you don't want to question your morals. Stories don't exist solely to make us feel good; if that were the case, Shakespeare wouldn't be a cultural icon for storytelling. If anything, this is the most realistic representation of conflict I've ever seen in a story. Nobody commits terrible acts without reason, and the more you come to know about someone the more you start to understand their justifications. As much as we push the "justice" narrative, "good" and "evil" are not in any way realistic, or distinct, groups. Seeing this fleshed out in a story hurts, and it's easy to blame "bad storytelling" when you're forced to confront your morals. Nobody wants to empathize with the person they hate, and that's the point. Ellie and Abby showed us the cycle of violence perpetuated by rage; one that couldn't be solved by killing, no matter how many bodies piled up. If the story ended with either one of them dead it would have been a cheap ending. An unrealistic ending. The ending feels underwhelming because it's not the "justice porn" that we're so used to consuming. Justice feeds into the cycle. This is a story about letting go of that cycle. Abby did it when she saw how Lev would come to hate her if she fed into it and Ellie did it when she realized how brutal she had become (which was not, as some may think, a disservice to the innocent lives she had already taken, but rather an acknowledgment of the fact that bodies would continue to pile lest she change). This cycle was also echoed in the greater story of Seattle, the killing of two WLF children igniting the endless war between the WLF and the Seraphites. The Last of Us Part II isn't meant to give you another wholesome story, that's what the first one was for. Its purpose is to undermine our sense of moral justice by showing us the destruction it begets. Expand

The ending is what sort of redeems the character arcs of all them and. You may not be satisfied, I wasn't but I was ok with the ending which sets up the third game.

The idea the devs have of the story was good but the execution is where they mess up. Some gameplay descions and character descions made will surely upset players which is the only reason in my opinion that gives the game this controversy. The ending might also not make it home for some but if you try to understand by the end the decisions Ellie and other characters make and the point of the story it will definitely make the game better for you.

Like I said, the execution was bad which brings this game down but the point of the effects cycle of violence and vengeance has on a person is shown well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful game and well-written. The characters have great banter which makes them feel much more real, and the game emotionally invests you in the protagonists.
For the nay-sayers that say the story isn't original, so what? Yes it has the arc of an epic tragedy, but just because you see your car is going to crash doesn't mean it won't hurt less. But the story doesn't focus just on revenge, but what comes after, juxtaposing Abby's redemption and trying to find a purpose in the face of grief and loss.

To that that think the ending doesn't make sense/is anticlimatic, etc- rewatch the final scene with Joel, understanding the implications of his actions, and Ellie's response, and its implications for Ellie and Abby.

To rate this game lower than 5 is ridiculous. If game of thrones kill loved characters it’s fine but Lou2 gets slammed as bad story. The game was made to be thought provoking and it certainly did that for me. Anger leads to anger, hate breeds hate and as I’m currently playing my second playthrough I find myself wanting to get to the second portion of the game again. Knowing what I know now I want to enjoy Abbys story more. On my first playthrough I rushed, gave her less time and struggled to empathise her story due to the anger felt towards her. I don’t feel that anymore. The ending, wasn’t what I’d have wanted to see but still powerful enough and during the final fight every punch I swung gave me less and less enjoyment and satisfaction. Ellie struggling to play guitar which is in the end the best way to keep her connected to Joel’s spirit is tainted.

This game had a rating of 2.6 with 40000 votes within the fir 24 hours which is not possible because the playthrough took about 24-25 hours and youtube channels like geeks and gamers are making this game as issue due to DMCA claims, thats also fine but atleast target the entire issue and not just this game because they striked your channel, thats grudge that you hold and having more than half a million people watching him cry online about the DMCA and other youtubers made 40-50k negative review bombardment. It's a pretty brilliant, but sometimes unfocused game. It's not a flawless game, but the highs are absurdly high.

Right off the bat, some of the issues are in the pacing and the way Naughty Dog sets up the game. There's a reason the pacing is done the way it is, but there are drawbacks to it. Similarly on the gameplay, we're all used to the stealth/survival gameplay loop and the game does it well, but it actually plays even better as an action game. If you play on NG+, make your loot settings easy and go to town. It's a fantastic action game, and most players will never experience it that way because of the default setup Naughty Dog encourages through tutorials and difficulty settings. So those are flaws.

Technically, it's probably the best game ever produced. Graphics, sound and accessibility are at the top of its class. This is why you should immediately disregard anyone calling it a 0/10, and probably even stuff like a 2/10. It's a masterpiece in those areas, and the gameplay is actually pretty fantastic.

Where there's a lot of dispute is the story, but what I'm really seeing a lot of is people being unwilling or unable to read below a single level deep. A lot of idiots are repeating "rEvEngE iS bAd" as a criticism of the game, but it's really not a story about revenge. If you read The Great Gatsby in high school and understood that is more than a melodrama about rich people, you should be able to figure it out. Forgiveness is the critical component of the game, and for Ellie it's largely about forgiving herself and those closest to her.

At its heart, the story is about the grieving process. Every single flashback cut scene reinforces the idea I'm talking about. Pay attention to, and think about why ND chose those scenes and what the purpose was. The rest of the game's story will come to you.

And you may have heard a lot about how depressing the game is, and it probably will leave you sad or melancholy. But all is not lost in the end, and the people who say that are missing what's going on. Ellie has to live with herself, first and foremost, and she had difficulty doing that even before the events of this game. By the time you get to the false ending, she's incapable of doing that so the idea of ending the game there would basically doom Ellie as a character. She goes on the final leg of her journey which I think was a bit too long (there's definitely some fat that could've been cut out), and learns to live with herself in the end. Materially, she may be broke. But spiritually, she's more complete than she has ever been before.

That should be a hopeful message to everyone, even as you go through **** times.

Some people argue that the game failed to make them empathize with one of the characters and that's a fine complaint. I disagree, but I get particular enjoyment about of books and movies that ask me to stretch my level of empathy. Others don't, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But I have to imagine, even those people aren't the ones rating it a 0/10 or probably even below a 5.

The people giving those types of sub-5 reviews are entitled children. They're able to regurgitate a list of 15 different nitpicks and there's no use in trying to dispute them because they're not interested in a discussion on the game. The first game has all of the same issues (for example, the plot armor is even more extreme in the first game) but they don't even entertain those ideas because they're not receptive to new ideas. These people are better off left alone, until they make it out of their arrested development.

As I mentioned, there are perfectly fair reasons to not think the game is a 9/10 like I did. But the range of sincere reviews should be something like 6-10. The people posting 5 and below are insincere.

I tried everything to like it but I just found it very boring and dry. 25 hours of gameplay with a badly written story, characters with no depth that I never felt a connection too (unlike all previous naughty dog games) false advertising in the fact it was shown from trailers etc that Joel would be in the game not Abby, the 10 hours of Abby gameplay that wasn’t revealed as I just mentioned and the awful ending that makes the whole game completely null and void. A story about revenge and true horror of the human psyche which just crumbles into nothingness and Ellie never gets her revenge it’s ridiculous. Worst AAA title for a long time. I’m glad people like it but to me that story was just not up to my standards. Everything other than the story was phenomenal the graphics, the music, sounds and gameplay were 10/10 unfortunately the story was 4/10 so I tired to balance it with my 6/10. 7/10 at very best. Seems like there is a lot of hate out there which probably stems from gamers having to play strong complex woman, as opposed to 'good old Joel' . That and the story is darker and less forgiving for characters' past actions. People need to get over their attachments to previous characters, especially given the post apocalyptic context. I for one thought it was a fantastic game. Beautiful visuals, enthralling gameplay and compelling story. The plot admittedly does get slightly frustrating in parts, but overall its both emotionally challenging and beautiful. The characters are way more complex and developed than we usually see in these types of game. Hats off to Naughty Dog for pulling this off. Ignore the hate. Expand
