This game was made with a lot of effort and heart, I will not denay that, and honestly I hope it can be a success comercially
But for me, it does not deserve 10 or 9, or 1 and 3, the last of us shined especially for its history, and the first one is superior in thisaspect, I know part 2 wanted to give a 'different way to show revenge' but it fails for me

Naughty Dog dropped the ball on this one. Last of Us Part ll was the most anticipated PS4 exclusive I think there has ever been, and possibly the most anticipated game of all time. What kind of story do you want to tell, but it was a terrible way of saying it.Especially for a linear story game!!!!A bad story is a failure of the game. And this work completely negates the values of the previous work, which is the most failure.

Regarding Abby, Her behavior is not bad, she can help people who have helped her, but she and Joel have different values. She thinks it is worthwhile to sacrifice to save all mankind. But Joel accompanied me throughout most of the United States. When she came to power, she brutally killed Joel. How do you make me feel good about her? The bond between Joel and me, how can a passer-by just debut! Finally forced me to forgive her, can you forgive your enemy?Although as the story progressed, let me understand Abby's person. It's farting!Since Abby can succeed in revenge, then let Ellie also succeed in revenge,After all, Abby has completed his revenge. This is fair!

In addition, there are problems with other roles. As an impressive supporting role, Jesse died so sloppyly as a cannon fodder. As soon as Gina opened her support for Ellie’s revenge, she didn’t say she was pregnant, and finally persuaded Ellie to give up her revenge. Was it teasing me?

The most serious problem is Ellie, which is completely inconsistent with previous works. She is a real Virgin Mary **** has already killed so many people, even at this time she could not bear the heart, this fly in the face of Ellie's "Tough" public image. After Joel's death, she can still fall in love happily and forgive her enemies in hard revenge. Sorry, I am a fool. I cannot understand the generosity and friendliness of the screenwriter. I only know that if Ellie is dead, Joel will kill the enemy without hesitation.

As for the ending, what I want to say is, at least please give me a choice.I know there is no real right or wrong in this environment, but my bondage with Joel is deeper,Although Abby has his own justice but I don’t want the screenwriter to forgive Abby for me. I want to avenge Joel.

In addition to the plot, the remaining parts have maintained a high standard, whether it is music, pictures or details. But the expression of the plot is so bad that it disappoints players who are looking forward to the sequel.

Most importantly, Joel’s method of death is unacceptable!!!!!!!!

I give the game a high score in production, but I give the plot 5 points because it is too far away from the previous game. The screenwriter overturned the previous values and turned the work into a mediocre work and a out-dated TV series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After running through the game. Here is my honest review of it. Positives The game is gorgeous to look at, the graphics are seamless and impressive. The lighting and effect is something I’ve rarely seen in PS4 games. The soundtrack is amazing, how fluid it is from a shifting to a tense situation from a calm situation is perfect. The voice acting in this game is just as incredible as the first. The actors are spot on with their deliveries and emotions as they are conveyed. Difficulty - I played on normal and even then it posed a challenge. This game was not easy to breeze through but pose a definite a challenge as I ran through it. Gameplay - crafting, gunplay mechanics, stealth and fighting felt fluid and saw very little “stickiness”animator movement was really well done and small details are very noticeable especially in stealth mechanics in terms of how they move. Enemy - some of the enemies are nightmare fuel and it worth learning their backstories in how they are created. BAD The story in this game is horrendously put together, the plot holes, the character development and how the game forces you to accept certain development and how they present these developments are horrible and not well put together. The story though it set a sequence of events early on in the game for character development, it failed badly and in fact turn the game into a chore and it became emotionally draining to complete it. The choices certain characters make or what made them likable and relatable are entirely 180 from the first game. This was story was not put together well and it was disappointing to witness. AI - the AI in this game fell short of intelligent. I running past clickers was very easy to do (possibly due to my difficulty setting). Human enemies are the worst and very predictable which made them a boring encounter. I wanted more monster type enemies but their were more human battles than monster battles when compared to the first. This game definitely is not a successor to the first. I am sadden by the direction they chose for the story. I weigh single player games heavy on the story and because of how lacking the story was the score I gave is completely fair. Expand

Motion Capture -

Take these views with a pinch of salt, as the guys working for publications like Forbes aren't really experts. They're journalists, who's responsibility is to write articles that drive debate within the gaming community. When playing a game like The Last of Us part 2 the narrative and character plots are huge contributing factors to the overall enjoyment of the game. Its entirely possible to make the wrong decisions early on and completely taint the gaming experience. For me this is the point, as spectacular as this game is cinematically, as expansive and unique the gameplay is; you play out the entire story with a sour taste in your mouth. This is because the creators at Naughty Dog have discredited the legacy of the first game with a misguided plot twist. Ultimately, the emotional investment and connection with the first game is lost very early on. The saddest aspect of the Last of Us part 2 is that it will be considered a success, not because of fan opinion but because of record sales and revenue. Whilst the game is still extremely entertaining and in many ways ground breaking it will always be a 'what if'. It will never mean as much to me as the first game. Expand

    The Good:
    -Graphics are awesome
    -Dog you can pet
-A lot of accessibility options for people that are blind for example.
    -Gameplay is alright.

    The Bad:
-The story completely drags the experience down as a whole. The new characters that are introduced don't really have or give us any reasons as to why we should care about them the same way we cared about the previous game's characters. It tries to pull off this extremely serious tone but it does it so much it reaches a point where it becomes the most hilariously absurd thing i've ever witnessed with a friend. If you're in for a great story, you are better off elsewhere as it is simultaneously unsatisfying and unrewarding.
-The game really isn't that challenging or throws punches at you. It always feels like you're being lead by the game, instead of having the player adapt to the game's difficulty itself. There's literally a option to "Skip Puzzles"

    The Ugly:
-The gameplay while it's alright, the maps are huge as hell, which means it takes a lot of time to really clear out an area. This can be boring if you just can't get into the game, or in my case, aren't laughing with a friend at how hilarious the prone system is.

-The prone mechanic is broken as can be. It takes away all the challenge of stealth and reached a point to were i would fire literal loud GUNS at people and yet they still couldn't find me. Incredible.

Its very clear Naughty Dog put a lot of effort into this game, there's no doubt about that. The way they've been going about it though in terms of arguing about it with the people online is...really bad. There's some hints of a good game buried in here somewhere, Maybe if the gameplay improved since the previous one, or if some of the story elements were changed. It's not the worst game ever, but it's certainly not good.

5/10. A Shallow experience, that yields unrewarding results and an ending that leaves an outcome nobody really is going to like....at all.

I also wanted to rate it lower at the start, but I'm not going to because as much as I believe the story suffers I think it could've been so much better if only one thing changed.

If Joel didn't give his name to Abby's group at the start of the game, it would have improved drastically. We get more time to let Abby grow on us as a character, and the player has more time to spend with Joel. If she progressed naturally before finding out and making that decision, it would reduce the need for all the flashbacks in the game while also making it less painful for the player to play as Abby. It would make some people happy with the end of the game because they'd want Abby to live. As it stands, the players want nothing more than to avenge Joel with Ellie because that's the only character who matters before Joel dies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a fan of the first game, I enjoyed playing through it. Especially since I was always so skilled at playing it. It's just as good, if not better, than the first as far as that goes. What's also cool, is being able to customize the game's challenges towards your new game plus run. Making enemies less or more aggressive, being able to find less or more resources, etc etc. That's something I really liked. We don't see that often in games. The graphics are beautiful. And I mean BEAUTIFUL. The acting is great. The attention to detail is VERY on point. Those alone tells me this game is definitely NOT a 0/10. I think that's ridiculous. Even 10/10 is kind of ridiculous too. Just about every game has flaws, big or small. Speaking of flaws, I didn't see many. BUT, the main problem I had with this game, was the story. It was a disappointment compared to previous game. I mean, a huge let down (and no, it's not because of the fact that Ellie's gay or because Joel was killed. I'm sick of reading articles from out of touch "journalist" saying that nonsense). Joel dying wasn't what really got me upset (though it was sad), but the way they did it is what annoyed me. I won't get into detail with that BS though. Anyway, I would've been completely fine with playing as Ellie and Dina/Jesse the entire game. I like Dina. But, did Naughty Dog seriously assume that we, the players, would appreciate playing as the person who killed Joel and beat the living hell out of Abby and a pregnant Dina? Did they surmise throwing a few happy-go-lucky flashbacks with Abby and her father would somehow get us to relate to her? Because it didn't. For most of us at least. Of course we wouldn't. It is so ridiculous. If it were not for the poor story choices, I would've given the game at least a 9/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So here’s the thing, the game isn’t terrible. But it all rides on how well you like Abby and the characters around her. I personally couldn’t care less about any new character introduced. It just didn’t land well for me. The parts where you play as Ellie? 10/10. But then there’s this overlong “please love this character” section that just wasn’t good. From Owen, to Mel, to Lev, to Manny. There was this sad desperation in the writing to try to make the player want to sympathize with Abby, they even tried to copy the giraffe scene from the first. Not once...but twice! First with a zebra, Abby and her father have a moment, then with a seal, Abby and Owen have a moment. It’s more arrogance than ambitious for a writer to think they can force or experiment with a players emotions to try to get sympathy for Abbys actions. They even try to make you care about killing Alice. It was a decision that fell flat with me, when all of abbys friends died, I was more indifferent than sad. The character of Ishmael in the original, mind you he’s never physically in the game, I cared about more than anyone associated with Abby. Expand

Reviewing a sequel is always a bit iffy. I'll try and be fair here though.

In terms of story, it feels undercooked. It feels like they had ideas, but couldn't decide the best way to implement them. A lot of the story beats could've made sense if given more time to build. Some of the choices seem ill thought out. A scene happens very early in the story (we all know which I believe),

A lot of the story beats could've made sense if given more time to build. Some of the choices seem ill thought out. A scene happens very early in the story (we all know which I believe), which feels haphazard and rushed. It feels like shock for shocks sake. We all knew something like this was likely to happen, it very well could've worked, but again, it was executed very poorly. The choices of story afterwards don't get much better. It's a perfect example of "what could've been". The characters could've been more fleshed out, the plot could've been given more time to breathe, the pivotal story points could've been given more weight. We see moments of character interaction of old in flashbacks, the entire museum segment is arguably the best in the entire game.

The character representation has seemingly been crippled by something. Neil Druckmann has made no secret of his intention to include characters of certain groups and orientations. I can't shake the feeling that he's not writing characters at the moment, but caricatures. The LGBTQ+ characters are largely made to be unlikeable. Which seems strange coming from a Naughty Dog game. The track record of likeable characters from this developer is well known and highly lauded, and rightly so. It does beg the question of what the intention then was. Because it seems to be to make everyone, including the LGBTQ+ characters as unlikeable as possible.

The gameplay is improved from the original, nothing to write home about but there is improvement there. The graphics as expected from ND are impeccable.

My recommendation would be to buy this on a heavy sale. This game being a ND game had a lot of expectation on it's story. It would seem to me, and clearly a lot of others that they failed here. It is not nearly comparable to the original in any way from a story perspective.

The characters we knew and loved have been seemingly ret-conned to a point where they appear to be different people with a similar name. The new characters fair no better, if anything, they get it worse, as there's nothing to grab onto and relate to. The originals ambiguous ending has also been changed to a black & white matter as well. Gone is the uneasy feeling of Joels final decision, instead changed to him being the obvious villain of the game.

I don't know what lead to this outcome, but something changed drastically between parts 1 and 2 development. I would genuinely urge the developers at ND to try and identify this change and make changes for their next project. They can do better than this, they have done better than this. I hope they will do better than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So let's get this out of the way, the game from a technical and cinematography perspective is just absolutely wonderful. Landscapes are amazing, gameplay is fluid, and sound design is excellent. Am I over reducing major encounters into QTEs? Yes, been over it for a long time. So with all of that, the game is far above a 1 or a 0 simply on the back of its technical brilliance. The rest of the game does its damnedest to try to drag the whole thing to hell though.

Where the game truly fails is on 1 simple failure of storytelling: you cannot backfill sympathy. The moment that Abby shotguns Joel's leg after he saves her without a second though, my opinion of her crystallizes; especially in a story about revenge. You cannot spend half the game trying to make me care about her and understand her plights and her why after she has already committed the act. Storytelling just doesn't work that way. Maybe my opinion of her shifts if you help me understand her and develop her character BEFORE she kills Joel, but after? No, never going to happen. Same goes with Abby's friends. Most of them, we know that Ellie kills before we get their story, and all of them participated in killing Joel; so how the hell am I supposed to be brought to care about characters who both did the bad thing and I know are about to die? I can't, because the story won't let me even if I wanted to. And I get it, the game is trying to show you how similar Abby and Ellie are and how hatred and revenge is an all consuming flame that begets a cycle of hatred and revenge. I get it, I see what you are attempting to do over there....you just did it extremely poorly.

Beyond that characters are wildly flat in this game. Ellie is considerably less interesting, Joel...well to be honest basically every second Joel is on the screen are the best character moments of the game which amounts to an hour, Tommy doesn't feel like Tommy and is basically regarded as an off-screen psycho-killer the whole game, Jesse is flat, for the life of me I can't see what Ellie sees in Dina or why Ellie spontaneously falls in love with her, and Abby is hard to judge because I am conditioned to hate her from the moment I meet her and nothing that happens over the course of the game overcomes that initial impression. Abbys friends are all over the map, some more interesting than others, but usually by the time we get to learn who they are on Abby's side we already know they are dead on Ellie's side so what is the point of getting invested?

It's a story and character driven game and that is where it is a giant letdown. Maybe the score is higher if the first game wasn't so brilliant. It tries to do a similar thing to the first game: take a simple story concept: "dad does anything to protect daughter" for the first and "revenge for killing my dad" in this one, but spin it in a new and interesting way. It fails this time around unfortunately. It really sucks that Joel and Ellie's relationship which was full of complexity and beauty and realism will never touch our screen again. It really does make me sad.

The story works to actively destroys everything the prequel had been building: well-known characters act in opposite ways compared to their previous selves, and new characters are not defined by their nuances and behavior but are just cardboard cutouts marked only by their identity politics group. Naughty Dog has written the Last Jedi and managed to kill a beloved franchise forever.

Even worse, the technical merits of the game are arguably not as good as the prequel. The pretty environments feel now like soulless Quixel asset flips, and the game animations are thousands upon thousands of motion capture segments weirdly blended together by something which feels more like an AI than any kind of human-made plan. The end result is something that looks amazing in a static frame or a small motion segment but doesn't feel right or cohesive once you are playing.

The gameplay has been simplified and dumbed down considerably compared to the predecessor, where it was already thin. Even worse, the changes made are never there to make the game better but to make the developer's job easier. An example is the addition of tall grass as a stealth mechanic, an unwelcome gaming trope that allows them to get away with much worse level design. Multiple issues which were present previously but were unimportant due to the nature of the prequel (inconsistent control response, shooting issues, out-of-control secondary animations getting in the way of your stealth, poor enemy AI, and more), now return but are way more prevalent since the game is way longer, has worse pacing, and the writing is no longer able to carry the weight of the game. It's just a lazy job after lazy job. At the end of the day, this game was not made as something intended to be played, but to be watched. And, since you have zero agency and zero choices during the game, I'd say the optimal platform to play the game is YouTube and not PlayStation.

The entire game feels like it was made by factory robots, except for the story bits, which seems to be written by an Internet troll instead. It deserves a 0 not only because that's how it will make you feel after trying it for a while, but because this is an extremely dangerous trend which can end up destroying the entire AAA gamespace. Do not listen to the dozens upon dozens of 10/10 'professional' reviews which talk nothing about the game's blatant faults and are nothing more than glorified press releases.

You should not buy this game

The game shoehorns in a new character that is unlikable, does horrible things from the get-go, and then forces you to play as her for half the game in an attempt to get you to sympathize with her story. I didn't. Due to my dislike of her, her sections in the game felt incredibly boring and drawn out, ultimately making this a chore to play.

Graphically, the game is absolutely beautiful. Voice acting is top-notch, animations are well done - as expected from a big budget production game.

Gameplay-wise, nothing has really been changed from the original, and rather, it seems as though there were less environmental puzzles. A jump feature was added in that I found to be useless.

But the main appeal in the original was the story that had you invested into these characters. That gets thrown out the window here, as any character development you saw previously gets undone by terrible writing.

Gorgeous visuals can't save this mess of a story, which unfortunately adds up to it being a huge waste of both your time and money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the original Last of Us, and Ellie's spin off prequel, but this sequel destroyed the IP for me. It wasn't because of what happened to Joel, or how it happened. It wasn't for the progressive stuff (I loved that side of Ellie's back-story.) And it wasn't the revenge arc, or the sudden appearance of an omniscient and omnipotent antagonist who was only written into the game to force a narrative. My issue with the game is how after Joel is removed from the story we are forced to play as the person who removes him.

We are also forced to watch some pointless sex scene with that character, one that no body asked for (and thankfully Japan censored.) We are also forced to later kill that monster's dog as Ellie, even though we were told we wouldn't have to kill the dog. The ten hours we play as the antagonist were a total waste, and did nothing other than make the open wound of Joel's uncharacteristic demise fester over. I would have given this game an 8.1 if we had the option to skip playing as the antagonist, but because they forced that on us, after such a heart-wrenching moment no less, I can't even fathom giving such a high-score.

As stated above, it was fine how Joel was removed, but what wasn't fine is my time being wasted playing a character I wanted revenge on. That moment was enough for me to get into character to want revenge, I didn't need her story, or elaboration to make her into a human, she was marked from that moment. All of that said, I loved the parts with Ellie. She should have taken up the entire screen time of this game. The graphics were amazing, the romance and setting were amazing, the story was sub par with some cringe lines, but overall most parts of the game, minus forced player swap and lack of choices, were amazing.

Speaking of choices, the ending was horrible. I know choices are hard to put into games, but giving the player options is what makes a story driven game great. A few examples are The Witcher, Mass Effect, and Telltale The Walking Dead. In the Witcher (1-3) every choice changed the world, and it drove you to make new choices for different playthroughs. The choices in Mass Effect sculpted the world all the way to the third game, and then it sort of dropped the ball, but it was still good. In Telltale every road lead to the same ending, but you wanted to explore every path to see how the journey was different. Instead of giving us some agency, even if it was a false choice, the game lead us down a narrow path with spikes on the wall and a gun to our back. We were told we didn't have to kill the dog, but instead we killed the dog in a QtE. We were forced to exact revenge on everyone around us, but when it came to the big bad we "chose" peace.

Realistically this game should have been split up into two parts, but it's too late for that now. We are stuck with the one ending we have, regardless of how bitter it is for the player... because lets be honest, Joel was no saint, he would never of spared anyone if it meant keeping the ones he loves safe.

All of that said, I originally mentioned how I would give this game an 8.1/ 10. That would have been the score if the game didn't force you to play as the antagonist. The reason it isn't higher is because of the lack of choices and cringe dialog. Even at it's finest this game is not a 10/10, that is a score only a select few games truly deserve and handing it out to the hot new game of the season spoils the prize. On the flip side, this game is also not a 0/10. The antagonist did rune a lot of the game, but that is the role of a foil in a story. The graphics, game-play, and sub par story still bring the game up well past a 5.0, but spitting in the face of loyal fans who have patiently waited seven years for a sequel is no way to earn good faith for future projects. Personally, after the drama surrounding this game I will likely never buy another Naughty Dog game, at least not new. I wanted this game to be great, and it could have been, but it feels like the core story was lost during the seven years of crunch. For my final score, I give this game a 5.3, but since I can only give whole numbers the score will have to be a 5/10. I hope Naughty Dog learns from the backlash and remembers who they make games for (ps, it's for the fans.) If they add an option to skip the ten hours of forced antagonist play, I will gladly boost the score up to an 8.1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sort of a failure, sort of a masterpiece The Last of Us Part 2 tries to blur the line of protagonists and antagonists. What is evil and what is not. The problem is that some of the character development/inconsistent behaviour or particular aspects of the story fall flat due to lack of said development, and the bigger problem is that all of those aspects could’ve been easily avoided by switching/tweaking some minor details here or there, while maintaining the same story. Now, the story is polarizing. Love it or hate it, but I think it’s pretty amazing. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, where you get to experience love and care, only to be left with void and despair. It’s not a fun experience in the end of the day, but it’s definitely worth it. Besides, it’s not the type of universe, where people get to be happy. Starting with the original The Last of Us, it was pretty clear, that it aims to show brutality of the world our characters are in. The story makes sense, but it’s how it’s delivered that makes it illogical in some parts. Again, it’s just little things, and I’ll gladly close my eyes to those aspects, as it’s pretty clear what Naughty Dog tried to do here, but it’s still disappointing of how they missed those minor details. Don’t listen to all those angry kids upset about Joel’s death or presence of LGBT themes, they clearly missed the point. Experience it for yourself. Everything but the story is 10/10

The story is mostly good, but it falls apart as time goes on. It doesn't play out it should, plus is filled with a lot of questionable narrative choices that simply shouldn't exist in a AAA story focused game. It's also way too long.

The biggest issue is the marriage of gameplay and narrative. They do not gel. Naughty dog seem to have taken no notes on the critiscm of the gameplay in the first game, as its basically unchanged (wow, we get a jump button). Another issue is with the games 'woke' mentality. No this isn't a sjw jerk fest like a lot of people make it out, BUT it isn't completely innocent either, with the story dumping ideas that only seems to annoy angry incels, rather than pull you forward.

This game is overly bleak. Also, switching characters half way through kills the pacing. The same story and goal (of hate destroying people and leading to ruin) could have been done better by arranging things differently.

The graphics, the level design, character design, GRAPHIC design (there is more than what you think) everything is beautifull and I though DMC and GOW had the best graphics for a PS4 or console game in general BUT this **** is soo special, feels good, lookds good and is kinda fun even though the gameplay is not as polish and milimetric as COD, Overwatch, etc. If you wanna be pleased with marvelous graphics, layout and good looking everything be my guest and play this game.

THE STORY IS THE PROBLEM, you expect something from a game. If you buy DOOM you wanna feel badass and kill demons moving fast with BIG GUNNS, if you buy dishonored you wanna go stealth or murdered everbody in creative ways. Unless you like to brainlessly spent your money, the process goes by knowing which kind of game you want to play before buying it

Since the last of us 1 I expected to buy the sequel FOR THE STORY and the story is trash.
You don't get the context necesary to empathize to some of the main characters.
Some of the events on the game are pointless, could have been pretended and make the characters to feel really stupid.
The pacing of the game is horrible, doesn't feels like the events slowly and organically guide to the end but they feel like they wanted the sroty to GO LIKE THIS instead of letting it to unfold itself at a reasonable series of events
AS STATED BY DRUCKMAN the context will make you understand the reason for it but instead the context given makes you HATE to play it and ends up being unfun
SOME characters, acts, events, from the first game are disrespected becaus of the dumbass context. If something was gray color on the 1st, will be BLACK AF on this one.

I wouldn't buy this game if you're comming for the story, so bad that the story is SO trash it eclipse the gameplay and good animations and graphics

The shining jewel of its predecessor makes The Last of Us 2 look like a budget film instead of a master piece with disenchanting and hopeless narrative that has little to no depth but to push pandering to the masses in a forced perspective to compensate for its lack of natural story telling.

When the game starts you see many improvements to the core aspect of the game with a more open world rather than the normal linear formula that Naughty Dog is known for. This is pushed further thanks to the amazing graphics something that the original achieved also however Naughty Dog has improved further on this.

The biggest fault comes with the story. While other games may get away with bad stories a game that is based around its story and what made the original such an amazing game faulters hard. There is so much missing it feels like the story was a rush job created on a SFJ groups homework page. However this is made even more apparent when you take into consideration that amount of detail in the world and its surrounding reaching borderline obsesive. The story on the other hand seems an after thought not the main focus. Even when characters die thats it. Characters that die are forgotten just as quick as they were there. There is no detailed respect show for there deaths and no second thought. This makes these secondary characters none essential and no emotional link is ever really made.

This game is a far cry from the original,
To put it simply this game is all fluff and no substance

I fell in love with the lore and the main characters and thought that the next installment will explore the origin of the cordyceps strain, the actions of the various state, military and paramilitary factions and further the story of Joel and Ellie in this "new brave world". Instead, they kill off the main character of the first part, via presenting him as a gullible old man, and they make you play as his murderer for half the game, they make the lesser-main character of the first part, Ellie, the mid-boss(!) of the game and they give her no resolution, as she gets in the end lonely, without being able to do the one thing that had from Joel, play the guitar, as the murderer of Joel bit off two of her fingers, who also got free, because after killing a small town, Ellie let her (yeah, the murderer is an androgynous freak) just because. They literally* spit in the face of their original fans (*a nobody spits on the dead body of Joel after he is being brutally killed). No amount of graphical fidelity, not to mention miniscule gameplay advancement, can weigh in for the atrocious story and character development, along with the insulting treatment of established icons. I’m a fan of the original so the 6 is based on nostalgia and improvements to gameplay but the story makes the score form hitting the 7-10 range. The fact a sequel isn’t needed will also hurt the game a bit in my opinion, but let’s begin. I genuinely enjoyed exploring the city of Seattle, the notes left behind by survivors and flowing the clues to the next note till the end. Reminded me of Bethesda’s story telling through books and letters. I also enjoyed the story of Ellie but less so Abby’s story. After the disturbing way Naughty Dog (Druckmann) betrayed the fan base and killed Joel in a very contrived Brutal way (only for shock value) did playing Abby (Joel’s) killer make me just hate her, and being forced to play her and have Naughty Dog try and make her actions before and after work just falls flat. For the pros of the game, The graphics are beautiful, the melee combat is slightly improved the gore in amazing and being able to play in the world I loved from the original will always be fun. The cons, Joel dies in a unjustified way. The story is poorly written, mostly for Abby’s time in the story. Controversial topics being brought up like Lesbians (if for some reason people care) and transgenderism do seem thrown in at times for no actual reason and any attempts to go into those discussions are just mediocre at best and useless at worst. Overall 6 because. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just finished the game. It is an excellent game and it plays really fluently, in terms of game play mechanics. I really liked the refine combat system, especially the dodging and directional dodging. A long, and I bet, awaited feature since the prelude. And the music monumentally outclasses everything below it. It done a great deal with reflecting the right emotion with whatever moment was present in the game. The visuals for a 2013 hardware is incomparable from what I have seen, you can't deny that. I have recently completed the original TLOU game.

Towards the end of TLOU II and throughout parts of the game, I was simply put, left confused.

I am not a person to bash on a game heavily. But from what I have played from my experience, to focus on the core characters, and then to veer off to a different set of characters with different lives and intentions doesn't seem to play well with the masses. Very risky move

When playing as Abby, we are fed the narrative that her life has meaning, is innocent and sweet. And then we are made question Ellie's mission and objective. We can't let part II take away the core characters from the prelude and neglect them, is what I felt was the intention here. I feel that they are neglected in favor for getting a viewpoint from Abby's life. There is no significant breakthrough backstory for Abby. Which I thought was disappointing. She was mundane to play overall. But in the end, were made feel as if all that Ellie has done, is made out to do bad on her journey, fueled by revenge. The compensation for playing as Abby is the empathy you endure as her, but for Ellie it is made out to be a huge task and strenuous. It was evidently confusing to me at first. But these are stark missions both these troubling characters endured on. And for the majority, i'd imagine so too. What I have said so far is a heavily personal on my behalf.

You always should look on the flip side too, after playing through all of Abby's perspective, maybe Ellie was pushing her luck a bit too much all along, maybe it was meant to be. Who knows. Ellie was always troublesome with the truth. Both were on the same mission and motivation of getting revenge. The longer I go, the more it lingers to me that these new characters introduced in part II, were in a time where Joel and Ellie also happened to exist. You can't really feel for one over the other, when you have new character developments.

I don't want to get into any stereotypical, racial biases in this game that people discuss. We just got to learn to accept that these are people with their own different beliefs in this game. I have nothing wrong with that. But personally, I truly believe in the ying/yang dynamic, especially with the gender types.

The developers were very brave to pull such a feat, 7 years of development for this plot. Bold moves set by Naughty Dog. I was just left in a state of confusion. I have nothing inherently bad to say about the story line at all. It's imperative to keep who the core characters are. I might need to replay this game to fully understand the complexities that Part II brings. I want to accept things for what they are. For this game as it stands at the moment, It's going to take a long time...

Some of my views still remain positive, graphics, music etc are still good and deserve a better score in isolation.

My biggest beef with the game is it's infuriating linearity and uses too many cut scenes. In new game plus I skipped the majority of the cutscenes and obviously it is normally slightly faster as you know what is coming. IT IS 6 hrs and 30 mins SHORTER..The total playing time for both play throughs is less than 48 hours. AND I AM A SLOW PLAYER.

The linearity of the game seriously gets frustrating. I have played many of the large open world games of recent years and to come back to something this restrictive was a huge disappointment.
They have had 7 years to come up with something better than this. There is no getting lost in this game as it won’t let you go off the path it forces you to take.

The story and characters all have issues Some of them quite serious and annoying. They get more noticeable in a second play through. . No spoilers. Play the game and decide for yourself.

They have even used recycled scenarios from the first game. This is just plain lazy and an insult to the paying gaming community that has to suffer it.

All in all I was super disappointed in this game. I was so looking forward to it and preordered it months ago. I wish I hadn't. I would still have played the game to see what it was like, but would have waited until it was a lot better value for the money.

i did enjoy playing parts of the game, but these in no way make up for the lazy game design and bad character narrative.

IF THIS IS THE BEST IT GETS I HOPE THAT THIS IS ‘THE LAST OF THE LAST OF US ‘.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to preface this by saying, I made this account specifically for the purpose of writing this review. I am not going to just leave the score I am going to provide genuine criticism. Overall review at the very bottom. Now, let's get into it.

The Last of Us Part 2 as a standalone game wouldn't be bad. It would be okay at best. Kinda generic story, decent combat, and excellent visuals. However, since this is the sequel to The Last of Us, one of my favorite games of all time and one of the best games ever made, we must look at this game in a different light. In my opinion, this game has the foundation to be fantastic, but falls short in it's writing. Visuals are superb, combat is as good as the original, and the characters have a good base layer of depth. However, it goes no deeper than that, and we'll pick it apart, one by one.

Jesse. I'm starting with him first cuz well, there's not much to say. All we really know about him is he used to date Dina and hung out with Ellie a lot. Aside from that, I couldn't say, he's a cool guy just, there's no depth.

Dina. I actually really liked Dina. She was a cool character and I wanted to know more about her, however, we don't get much outside of "She's Ellie's girlfriend" which is fine, but, now we're only caring about her because we care about Ellie. I wanted to know Dina *more*, show us some flashbacks of them building that relationship higher and higher to get to where it's at. Then, I would've been much more emotionally invested in her.

Abby. I liked Abby as the villain, I did. However, I did not like how Naughty Dog tried to make us sympathize with her. Joel and Ellie in our eyes, are the good guys. And with Abby killing Joel, there is just no way I can ever like her like I like them. The entire time playing as her I hated it. Ya we got backstory and I appreciate it, but it could've been told differently instead of making us play as her, and forcing us to beat the s**t out of characters we love.

Joel and Tommy. Now I am grouping these two together because I have the same issue with both of them. You cannot convince me logically, that Tommy and Joel, would have trusted Abby like they did. It just wouldn't happen. Joel and Tommy from the original game didn't trust a damn soul besides themselves and their families. So for Tommy and Joel to put themselves in that situation, makes no sense. Even to go as far as giving out their full names? No way. That's not the Joel and Tommy I know.

Finally, Ellie. Ooooh, this one hurts. Ellie is such a bold departure from her original character. To tell me that Ellie is going to watch Abby kill her two father figures, her girlfriend, and one of her friend, then let her live? Ya no. Sorry, that is just completely unrealistic to me. No human would ever go through that much stress and trauma, just to give up right at the end. Just doesn't happen.

What could have made it better? In my opinion, this: start the game with a little prologue showing Ellie and Joel younger, not first game young but, a little older than that. Show their relationship or lack their of, show us a little bit more of Ellie's emotion after finding out what Joel did to the Fireflies, and introduce us to her relationship with Dina and Jesse to show how they've been growing together. Then, around the mid game mark, thrown in Abby, looking for Joel to seek her revenge. While out on patrol with Dina, Ellie gets captured by Abby and is tortured trying to get info on Jackson and whether or not Joel is there. Then, let us play as Joel a bit on his way to rescue her, and in his attempt, he get shot and killed in front of Ellie, trying to save her.

Then, the game moves on to Ellie's revenge plot. And this time she *actually* gets revenge. During this time either cut out all of Abby's part of the game or atleast shorten it, or show us things in cutscenes. Then to wrap it all up, Ellie kills Abby, and takes revenge for Joel. I get the message of the game is "revenge is bad" but that could've been shown in like an epilogue scene, where Ellie has PTSD or something along those lines, and she is haunted by the horrible things she did, instead of killing off all the major characters we liked.

Overall I give the game a 5 cuz if you're only playing it for the gameplay, you'll have a good time, but the story just isn't there, even if you didn't play the first game, some actions just make you go like, wait, what?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hated this game, at first. I still hate it, but only because it's a sequel to the first. I've come to be at peace with the idea that Ellie only came to forgive Joel after doing to others for revenge what Joel did to save her, allowing her to see the error of their ways and to understand how he felt making the decision that he did. I do think this is a good story in that regard, and that this was how a sequel would have had to go, even if it's not the best execution in my opinion. However, the whole thing that made the ending of the first special to me was the inner conflict that you felt knowing that you had done what was undeniably the wrong thing, yet you felt that you could justify it to yourself because the game had developed the relationship between Joel and Ellie so well that you could not help but be happy that they were together. It left a bittersweet feeling in your soul, and Joel's promise to Ellie made you feel a guilt that made it a beautiful ending, not quite a happy one. This game actively destroys that ending by making you wish that Joel had left Ellie to die, so that she wouldn't suffer like she did in part 2.

I do think they are both amazing stories, but my issues lay with the fact that what makes the second game great is in conflict with what made the first game great, and to me the first one will always be the better half. Part 2 is simply a miserable experience that destroys everything great about the first game, in the name of an admittedly powerful and emotional story. It's just not a sacrifice I think should have been made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's a lot to say about this game… From the graphics to the environment, characters, actors, gameplay and of course the "controversial" story.
I'll start with the graphics: This game is absolutely one of the best looking games generally speaking, be it on the PS4 or PS4 Pro, the game LOOKS GOOD and there's no denying it. Even on a vanilla PS4 or a PS4 slim, the game runs smoothly and beautifully.
The environment is alive, much more than the first game due to the fact that the levels are almost completely open and traversal friendly thanks to the game's new improved gameplay mechanics like jumping, proning and getting between small cracks. There are letters and notes scattered around the levels with deep and sometimes extremely depressing world building content in them that are worth reading. The hunt for materials and “bolts” (even on the Normal difficulty dubbed “Moderate”), is fun and there’s much to discover.
The characters are problematic to say the least.
Ellie is cold (although understandable) and brooding and just unlikable unlike in the first game. The only times when she feels like "Ellie" is when the flashbacks happen and those are the best of her. It is of course important to note that she is more mature and of course more vengeful than ever but it doesn't excuse the fact that I just care about her much less than I did in the first game.
The romance and relationship between Dina and Ellie, while still cute left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and I felt like there was more to be explored between them and yet nothing came to fruition. They're relationship was subpar at best and incredibly boring and tedious at worst. Their interactions with one another felt stale almost if the only reason for their relationship is to be some sort of a "romantic" relief.
Abby is a whole other story. On one hand I can 100% appreciate and respect the fact the Neil Druckmann decided to let us see the other side of the coin, not only the evil woman who killed Joel, but a person trying to move on (so to speak), from her past that’s haunting her (shown in PTSD flashbacks and nightmares) and her ability to love and care for other but her story is still another revenge story for a very revenge driven game. On the other, I just don't care about her. Not because she killed Joel, but because I just don't. She's boring, evil, wretched and nothing good comes out of her. Although you have to love the fact she tries with Lev to become better and improve, I just don't understand why I have to play close to 10 hours as her. Again, I respect it, but I don't like it.
While Joel isn’t as presence (for obvious reasons), he still is the focal point for Ellie’s revenge plot on Abby. He’s a side character but for what it’s worth, he’s the one with the most amount of depth.
Now the story.... It's not THAT bad.
I feel that a lot of negative reviews given to the game were given by people who either hadn't finished the game, hadn't played it or just wanted to ride the wave of hate. The story is not THAT bad!
    Was is falsely advertised? Maybe.
Was it long and depressing? Absolutely.
    Was the ending satisfying? 50/50
While I want to talk about the story more I really feel like the story should be experienced individually. It's a long journey but I personally believe that it's one worth taking.

The gameplay is superb. Nothing to say more. While Druckmann said that "the game isn't supposed to be fun" it's one of the funner games I've played in a while. The progression system, weapons, stealth and the difference in gameplay between Abby and Ellie, everything is well made in the best way possible. The gameplay is a true sight to behold (and play!).

And lastly, the actors. Every single one of the main characters (Love them or hate them), are played in the best way possible. Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey are the best choices that Naughty Dog could have made for these roles. They were incredible and worth experiencing the game just for the way they portray their characters.

Final note: Take every review with a grain of salt. Experience the game for yourself. You'd be surprised.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here we are ! I just finished the game. At the time I would definitely put a 3 but after thinking about it I put a 7. Graphically, nothing to say Naughty Dog is still doing his bit and the level design is there! The soundtracks stick enormously to the story telling and they put us extremely well in the atmosphere of the game. However, that is not enough to make a good game. We play a The Last Of Us for its scenario and the emotions that the game will make us feel through its characters, the attachment that we have and will have for them and twists to come. Like many players, I was shocked and terribly annoyed by the death of Joel. This brutal death which seems so .. "null" for the emblematic character of the license. This death was caused to shock the player, to put him in the same state as Ellie. Neil Druckman was wanted to create a feeling of revenge, disgust, envy of murders and especially the wish that Abby dies at the hands of Ellie. I myself wanted to uninstall the game after this scene; The disappearance of this emblematic duo to which we were all attached disappeared after an hour of play. We thus leave in the quest for revenge of Ellie followed by Dina his lover. The character of Ellie will change over time and this quest for revenge. As we go, we will realize that Ellie loses her human side and destroys everything in its path. So she kills Abby's friends to find her. We play Abby's character for almost a good half of the game. We learn more about its history and past. What's the point ? To try to justify the death of Joel, however we had understood his motivations and that could have been summed up much faster instead of making us play a character who all wished death. This part of the game is boring to me.

The game tries to make us empathetic towards Abby, however for my part it did not work especially on the spot ^^

After Ellie is beaten by Abby and she had to give up her revenge we now see her living a good life accompanied by Dina and "their" baby JJ. Having given up on this quest, Ellie is happy despite the fact that she is still haunted by the death of her adoptive father, Joel. That's when Tommy reappears to everyone's happiness and puts Ellie back on track. She cannot give up her revenge and she abandons her family and her farm to set off again in search of Abby. Great twist having amazed me enormously! Ellie then finds Abby almost dead and exhausted from the torture she suffered. It was then that a hand-to-hand fight broke out between the two women. Close to drowning Abby, Ellie finally gave up killing her. Personally when Ellie drowns Abby, her gaze broke my heart. Ellie had lost her humanity and only been overcome by her desire for revenge. I was pleasantly surprised that she didn't kill Abby. Neil Druckman wanted to restore the little humanity that remained in Ellie at this moment. Like us, Ellie understood then that all that led to nothing, killing the one who killed Joel will not bring him back to life, she will never be able to see him again. Unlike her, Abby had only killed the person directly responsible for the murder of her father. Ellie had killed Abby's friends even though they were not directly responsible.

When Ellie returns to her house, she discovers her empty house, without Dina. We understand then that she lost everything by wanting revenge. This end is heartbreaking, I for my part cry for long minutes. The final Flashback with Joel shows us that the day before her death, she told him that she could not forgive him but that she would try. Joel therefore died without knowing if she had forgiven him. It is horrible and heartbreaking. The moral that Neil wanted to transmit to us in this work is that revenge leads to nothing, responding to hatred with hatred will not solve the problems and will only make things worse. Definitely a wink compared to the current situation in the world.

To conclude, I think The Last Of Us Part 2 remains a beautiful work all the same. The scenario is far from high-flying but the story being told well and the emotions well felt it gives us a game that remains appreciable. Joel's death remains questionable in my opinion, and some scenes are too. But it is a dramatic story that we have there and that touched me personally. I don't know if there will be a sequel, but it's a possibility even if I'm not sure how it could bounce on it. In any case, the title of the game takes on its full meaning at the end. Ellie will remain the only survivor, and she will have lost everything as she said in 1 "All the people I love and who stays with me end up abandoning me or dying" The circle is complete.

It is a very different opus from 1 and I understand the community's dissatisfaction with the script. But you have to know how to open your mind and how to embark on the story that we are being offered in order to be able to fully enjoy the work that is on offer!

Thank you for reading. Its not very structured and i'm sorry for that ^^ Bye !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is disappointing to say the least. After seven years, we, the players, were expecting an epic tale surpassing the first game in both storytelling and gameplay. While the gameplay is smooth, intense, and even fun, the story doesn’t even compare to the first one. Even though I entered the game with high hopes and wes, I can honestly say that TLOU2 isn’t THAT bad of a game. I finished the game in two days, playing the first eighteen or so hours in one sitting. Despite the pacing being slightly off, the first ten hours where you play as Ellie are amazing. I found myself constantly wondering what would happen next and genuinely enjoying the gameplay. I felt things I’ve never felt before while playing a video game. For example, on the way to the aquarium, I was overcome with a sense of dread and panic. I found myself having to pause the game to gather my emotions a lot. When I first read the reviews that said that the violence was overwhelming and would genuinely make you sick, I was reluctant to believe that it would effect me the way that it did. When Ellie killed Mel without knowing she was pregnant, (and the entire time I knew that she was), I was sick to my stomach. Seeing Ellie react the way she did made it even worse. A few other reviews have said that the way Ellie reacted after killing Nora was unrealistic, considering that she had killed many other people before her, but her reaction was genuine to me. That was the first time that she had killed someone without them fighting back. The first time she had truly tortured someone. This is the first time she is met with one of the consequences of her actions. With all of these things considered, the first act is probably my favorite. Now, the second act is one of the most controversial video games acts I’ve ever heard spoken about. If I’m being honest, I’m still gathering my true thoughts about this part. The gameplay? Truly, Abby’s gameplay was fun and intense, but felt jumbled together without a true purpose. It also felt too long and drawn out. I understand what Naughty Dog was trying to do. Make us empathize with Abby and make us understand her pain and actions. This wasn’t as successful as they wanted. Of course, Abby was a good character and she had depth, but whenever I started to like her, I remembered that she tortured Joel to death. Look, we all knew that Joel was gonna die. The moment he killed all those fireflies, he signed his death certificate. For him to be tortured to death by Abby? I don’t think he deserved that. It’s not like he made her father suffer. He made it as quick as he could. He didn’t even want to kill him, her father got in his way so Joel eliminated him. For Abby to go out of her way to find Joel, travel to Wyoming, torture and kill him in front of his adopted daughter and not expect any repercussions? Well, that was incredibly stupid of her. The entire game Ellie was punished for wanting to seek revenge, but Abby wasn’t. You could argue that Abby’s friends died, but even then, it’s not like she was left alone. Abby had Lev to keep her company. A quick side note, I’m happy that a character like Lev was put into the game. It’s good to see representation in such a mainstream video game, even if it is this type of game. Anyway, for Abby to have killed Jesse, and to have almost killed Ellie, Dina, and Tommy, she deserved worse than what she got. Ellie was consumed with the idea of revenge and in the end, it destroys what was good in her life. She thought that once Abby was dead, the flashbacks, the nightmares, the PTSD from Joel’s death would disappear. In the final act of the game, before Ellie can actually kill Abby, her last memory of Joel, a promise to try to forgive him and mend their relationship, stops her from finishing the job. She realizes that Joel wouldn’t have wanted her to let this idea control her life, and she finally ends the cycle of revenge. Thus, allowing Abby and Lev to escape the Rattlers and make the trip to Catalina Island, where the last of the Fireflies have regrouped. Ellie, unable to play guitar, AKA the only thing she had left of Joel, returns to her home to find Dina and JJ gone. My question is, why does Abby, who never once showed remorse for killing Joel or ruining Ellie, get to have a happy ending, while Ellie, who showed remorse and even spared Abby in the end, get punished and left with nothing? Even after all of this, I still don’t think it’s a bad game. Visually, it’s a masterpiece. It’s the prettiest game I’ve ever played. Gameplay wise, it’s fantastic. The storytelling just doesn’t live up to the first one. Is it as bad as everyone is making it out to be? No, not at all. Is it worthy of GOTY? No, not even close. I do hope to see a DLC, maybe not an entire third game, but some sort of a continuation of the story. Even without anything, I’m excited to see what Naughty Dog does next. Expand

To be honest, I had a very open mind about this game and before the day I finished it, I would have given it a 10/10, but after completion I have to review my ratings for the game and give it a 6/10 at best. Over 100, it is a 60. This game made me feel miserable for about 50% of the gameplay.

To be honest, I had a very open mind about this game and before the day I finished it, I would have given it a 10/10, but after completion I have to review my ratings for the game and give it a 6/10 at best. Over 100, it is a 60. This game made me feel miserable for about 50% of the gameplay.
The main downfall is that in my over 15 years of playing games, I had a very huge disconnect with the character's morals I was controlling (Abby) and I had to literally force myself to play and conclude this game.
The game is great in terms of gameplay, good graphics and a great AI. However, the game falls short on story and its length, which is the only thing this game really has for itself when you consider how linear it is, the lack of DLCs and multiplayer.
The issue with the story for me, is not Joel's death but the obvious lack of direction for Ellie and Joel's characters, it is very obvious the writer and director had very little thoughts on the future of this characters. At the end of the game, Ellie's fingers going off felt too convenient when you think of the guitar and felt more like a deliberate slap on the face for every fan rather than whatever it was meant to convey.
This game was also marketed as an Ellie and Joel game which was completely false. You get to play as Abby for about 50-60% of the game, a character with zero moral compass, and this created a huge disconnect with me controlling the character, I hated the character and I don't know how I saw the game through. The worst part of the game to me, was the conclusion of Seattle day 3 with Abby, you would think that she had a great conscience or change of heart after the 10 hours+ of using her, but then you see that grim smile on the thought of killing a pregnant lady and naughty dog somehow wants me to have some empathy or love for this character. This was a big no, and I honestly felt her part of the game could have been introduced as a DLC, it had very little to the overall story we started in part 1.
On the contrary naughty dog tries to sell Ellie out as a villain or somehow very similar to Abby throughout the game, which didn't connect to me, because Ellie always felt remorseful and never wanted to kill the characters she did in the game, she felt filled with guilt each time she made a kill and this was taking a toll on her. Which was the opposite of Abby, a character filled with joy in doing evil things, a sociopath that the game tried to make us love, from her cheating with Owen to her love for killing Jesse, Tommy and Almost Dina despite knowing she was pregnant. To me this was all I needed to know about the characters.

If you think this story is good or a masterpiece, I completely disagree with you, as the story felt like it was paving the way for new games rather than continuing on its previous game, it felt like an introduction to gangs and zombies, something familiar to walking dead. It's almost like naughty dog has plans for multiplayers, and perhaps new characters/fraction wars in the future and not the great individual story which is the main reason for even playing the game. There are so many zombie games and movies and it is sad the last of us tries to feel like any other rather than set itself apart.
I hope there is no part 3 of this game, because to me this game didn't only serve as a conclusion to Ellie and Joel's story but to the whole franchise.
If I want to watch a zombie or survival movie with vengeance as the theme, there are many movies to watch. Naughty dog has too seriously rethink its future with this franchise moving forward and look at what worked in the first compared to the second.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the success of the original game series the developers and writers championed story telling over player choice and interactivity. This was a bold choice that enabled the studio to tell the in depth and captivating story they wanted to tell, to great critical and user acclaim. The linear story of TLOU was heavily praised for the risks that it took and the manner in which it drew the audience in and captivated them.

This brings use to Part II where the studio sought to build on the success of the first game and the add on story to further push the boundaries and subvert the expectations of the audience. However, after heaping so much praise for the development of the characters it was always going to be controversial to kill off the protagonist from the first game. Let alone do it in such a brutal and gut wrenching fashion while undermining some of the well established character. This was bold and risky and as the old adage goes, "if you live by the sword you die by the sword".

I truly believe that if they had told the story in a different fashion and had you play as Abby first and kept her objective partly cloaked. Then had her storyline end with the death of Joel you would have had a much better chance of the audience understanding the plight of the character. Starting off as having Abby kill Joel was always going to be a tough hill to climb to redeem her in the eyes of the player base. First impressions matter and unfortunately the story did not do enough to win the audience back to make Abby a likable character.

Opening up a dialogue regarding the morality of killing people in this post apocalyptic world is profound, however it is somewhat undermined by then murdering a lot of NPCs for the majority of the game. Do these characters and their back stories somehow not matter? You can't have it both ways and not be very hypocritical. Abby's father from TLOU was in no way a clear cut "good guy" and yet his death was not treated as an overly "special" event, what is to say that any of the numerous people that you kill as Abby or Ellie in Part II wont have avenging families in the next game? The futility of revenge is a key part of the morality message in the game, however it just doesn't quite stick the landing. It's the "press X to grieve" syndrome where by the game wants us to care about people's deaths when it suits them.

The game is beautiful and well designed with some real care and attention put into the upgrading animations and graphics. They also added jump.

Despite the beautiful game design the series has always been championed by its story and game mechanics and forcing you to play a linear storyline can work very well to immerse a player. However, when it doesn't work and you are forcing a player to be a character and undertake actions that you do not believe in it is jarring and un-enjoyable.
If you wish your game to be judged on its story and cinematic experience and also want to take risks that you know will shock and confront the audience. Then be prepared that the audience may sharply pull in the other direction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a person who loves the naughty dog studio ever since uncharted 2 came out. Then have been waiting for every game they release and finishing all the uncharted games multiple times. Then playing the last of us while blindingly trusting that the story is gonna be really good based on the other games, it got even more impressed when i finished it, i was in love with the story and the relationship between Ellie and Joel. I finished the game over 5 times and i couldn't explain the amount of excitement i had for Part 2. Having finished the second gamed, i am terribly disappointed with how the story went. I had no problem with killing of main characters in any project as long it has a meaning to it and is done properly not just for shock value. But killing of the main protagonist in the first hour of the game not only decreases the amount of interest i had for the rest of the story, but also making me feel like the character that i grow up loving feel like such a side character for the way he was killed of. Joel in the first game was known to be such a bad ass character that was careful with every move he make in this post-apocalyptic world which made us look to him as not only a father figure but as a more bad ass john wick. So making him die like that did give his arc in the game justice. I was okay with the rest of the story until the point they make you play as Abby. whatever her reason was for killing Joel i would've never liked her or emphasized with her having killed my favourite character in the beginning of the game. But what makes it more stupid is that they make her father a random nbc from the first game that you could've literally killed in various ways.
forcing me to liking her by making the player go through a really uninteresting story involving two kids is just gonna make me hate the story even more.
As for the ending i don't have a problem with having Ellie living a happy life in a family and leaving Abby alone. But making Ellie go through all of this just to spare her life at the last second was just stupid and was just stretching the story. Making Ellie kill all those characters just to spare the one responsible for Joel's death is just really stupid. The only thing that makes this game playable is the great graphics and the nearly perfect gameplay and clever scenarios where you feel really challenged as a player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to love this game and It gets off to a strong start. Having us play as Ellie is a natural progression and I liked seeing where she and Joel had ended up. Joel's death was sudden and brutal and could have been a fantastic plot hook for the rest of the game, unfortunately the rest of the game doesn't do him justice.

The Ellie half of the story is competent but nothing special. The flashbacks with her and Joel proved that they could have made a fantastic game and were highlights of the entire story. I'm not gonna spoil this part of the game because i genuinely believe its worth playing. So after Murdering half a city, the Ellie crew are forced to make a hard decision and give up the hunt for Abby (the person who killed Joel). Then the gods of story exposition have her show up in a cut scene where she murders one of the only likable new characters and holds you at gunpoint.

    Then it cuts to black.

This is where things go very wrong as you are forced to play though many hours as Abby in a poor attempt to make you feel sorry for her. The story had me hooked enough and the gameplay was good enough that i was willing to suffer though the boring tripe that was the Abby half of the game. It was like a teenage love drama and the only bright side was that i knew most of the cast would be dead soon. I'm not sure if i can remember a single one of their names so clearly they were well written and fully developed characters.

At some point she meets a child who happens to also be a transsexual because the gods of story exposition were feeling extremely heavy handed that day. I was then forced into another couple of hours of that weren't even related to the main plot. I wasn't sure it was possible, but the new characters were even less interesting than the teenage drama crew.

As far as the political stuff is concerned, its nowhere near as bad as some of the review bombers would have you believe. Although i admit It can be a little preachy at times its usually just sat quietly in the background. I do have to agree with the people that think the whole concept of a trans woman going though all the necessary procedures to transition in a time where most people are making shivs out of broken pairs of scissors is completely ridiculous. I could keep talking about the political stuff but whats the point? Its boring, its been done to death and video games are meant to be fun.

So we finally are back though the Abby half of the story and it gets resolved by having us beat the crap outta Ellie for killing the Teen drama crew and then letting her go... My score keeps going down as I write this. We go through all that to have it resolved in a 3 minute fist fight. Apparently Abby didn't learn that letting the Ellie (The literal angel of death that has murdered half of Seattle) live will get all your friends murdered.

The last bit of this review is going to be as token as the last bit of the game. You play as Ellie again. She gets PTSD, leaves her wonderful peaceful life with her wife and child to travel to California to go kill Abby (again). You then play as Abby and get to watch her get punched in the face by a burly man. You then play as Ellie, murder some biker dudes, rescue some slaves and finally catch up to Abby. Then you have a fight in the sea and let her go. After abandoning your whole life (twice) and murdering most of the people in two cities.

Gameplay 9/10 - It takes elements that worked in the first game and makes them work better.

Visuals 10/10 - Stunning, i could almost smell the fungus and regret.

Story 3/10 - Play the first half and then go and act out your own ending with sock puppets. it'll probably be more fulfilling and wont take up 15 hours (unless you want it to).

This review 6/10 - I wrote it at 3AM and I still think I did a better job than TLOU P2 writers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you love TLOU because of the heartwarming feeling that the game gives you, then please don't get involved with TLOU2. If you are looking for generic gameplay, fantastic graphic, and some spice in the storyline (but still a wired choice), then this might be the game for you.
For those who don't want to read a full review, you can look at my short summary here (or the full summary below):
TLOU gives you violence, lies, and heartwarming feeling that emerge through the main characters' relationship.
TLOU2 gives you violence, lies, (questionable) moral dilemma trick, and sad and gloomy story.

    ===========SPOILER AHEAD===========
First, let's look at gameplay. I have to tell you guys that I didn't enjoy the gameplay of the first game. As you encounter the same enemy over and over again and your tactic revolved around sneak behind them and stealth kill, then re-establish your stealth again. There are some shooting in the game depending on how good your resource management is, but the gunplay itself feels clumsy to me. However, the game does provide you a vast variety of environments in each chapter as you go through the story but they don't change any aspect of the main tactic. I get bored in just 2 or 3 hours of the game and just wanted to rush to the next cutscene as fast as possible. TLOU2 still has the same gameplay with little to no refinement. For me, the overall experience of gameplay would be 4/10.

    ------- Graphic/Sound effect and ost/Voice actor -------
We don't have to talk about any of this topic because they are AWESOME (10/10).

    ------- Story summary/Climax/Take away -------
As you may see the game tries to get you to sympathize with both characters, shows you that the revenge only causes more damage to you and people around you, and forgiving can be a hard choice and even if you took the choice you still have to live with sorrow. Which might sound great for a game-takeaway right?
Well, the thing that annoyed me is I don't understand why ND just ditch the plot that gives a heartwarming and good feeling (even though the world is cruel and violent) to the player in TLOU and changes it to a gloomy and sad storyline. I know this is subjective, but I did set my expectation for a whole different thing (Nevertheless, who am I to judge? It's a ND's game, not my game).
Finally, the reason why I give this game a 5/10 game.
As a story-driven game, the story itself should be the most important element. However, the ending, take-away, or whatever you might call it doesn't prove or justify any moral question. Because even if you (As Abby or Ellie) spare life of a villain to prove that there are some good deeds in the world (or in the character), it still doesn't hold the weight against the whole story. Let's think about it, we all know that every character in this game is evil right? They have to kill many other humans just to get what? Medicine, information, resources, you name it, or even just to cross the bridge. And they will likely continue their killing as the story goes by (or in TLOU3). Showing the player just one or two characters' revenge-forgiveness cycle just doesn't seem to make any sense in a game that you have to kill to proceed with the story. I'm pretty sure that all the people in the post-apocalypse world have their own "good" reason for their action and there will by Abby2, Abby3, Abby4, and many more. For me, to choose such a plot just to set up a cheap moral dilemma trick or make an ending seem awesome to some audience proves that the writer is very incompetent. He/She might get blind from how good he/she might think the story is, then overlooked or unable to realize the main gameplay or the whole world of the game.
My brother said to me after we finished the game: What's the point of spending a 20-ish hour in this revenge plot as there are many more to come for revenge.
Me: Drove off for trade-in TLOU2.

Lastly, This game can never be a 10/10 (do you think the witcher3 is a joke?) neither 0/10.

Isn't it though, a crying shame that we can no longer trust review scores, and that people like myself, now have to go out and purchase a game, essentially going in blind. For that reason, The Last of Us Part II is now in my collection...but not for much longer. It is destined for a pre-played bargain basket, somewhere in Sydney.
If it was a stand alone game, let’s call it The First of Them Part 1, I could have emerged myself in the beautiful visuals and reasonable gameplay, and just made a cuppa tea during the bleak cut scenes (and one cringe-worthy - please gouge my eyes out - sex scene). But this was a sequel to one of the best, heartfelt stories ever told. It has totally spoilt The Last of Us, for me. Now I know, how it ultimately continues/ends, I don't think I'll ever be able to return to it (the original Part 1) ever again.
Imagine The Shawshank Redemption Part 2, where Andy and Red's, now homosexual, relationship is revealed to an unsuspecting audience. Andy is killed by the Granddaughter of Warden Norton and the remaining plot has Captain Hadley chasing down and trying to kill Red, who in turn is trying to chase down and kill Warden Norton's Granddaughter. Would that get an IMDB score of 10/10? Probably. Because like I said, you just can't trust review scores anymore.

I know entirely that you should not judge a game like this by only it's first dew hours but olease remember that a good game should at least try to hype you at the beginning. This game fails in every way to make you want to continue. The plot reasons are extremely weak and poorly placed during the game so far. Almost every new character they introduced to make the world more alive and more interesting does quite the opposite, most of these new characters are boring to say the least. It doesn't really feel like a The Last of Us sequel, storywise, for these first 6 hours. On the other end we have the gameplay. It was updated and took to today standards... Well, sort of. It does feel like you're playing The Last of Us, but it gives off too much a weird feeling of being an action game, and not a great narrative driven story like it's predecessor. One special note goes to the enemies: I've noticed, and recorded with the Share Button, that most enemies literally spawn behind me so they can take easy swing at me while I had no way of avouding it. Not only enemies spawn like that (it doesn't always happen but when it did it was annoying as hell) but their detection range for the olayer is inconsistent. Sometimes you can get in front of their face undetected, some others they will spot you from like 5 miles away. Weirdly enough, aside from the very early parts, it takes too long for a story cutscene to another which is kinda bad for the "game with a story", there are not enough driving points and like said before the player is not encourager to continue, you get easily bored as soon as you end the very prologue. I was so let down I had to pass the controller to someone else to continue for a while and they got bored too. The graphics is great, but some animations are disappointing, mainly the jump animation, and the climbing animations. The dodge animation is bad but not that bad. The vegetation is great but then you see the "wind waves" on the grass and start vomiting. There were also some disappearing buildings, but they restored themselves after a few seconds of invisibility. Unremarkable early game for a sequel.

I'm terrible at making "reviews" and I hope no one ever asks me to review games for a job.

    - backplot served through notes in 2020 (indi style again).

Recap: Another fail of so called "game critics", it's 100% not 10/10 game in many ways. Sequel don't deserve stand along with original. No wonder grass roots dump this game so badly.
IMHO the main tragic of Tlou 2 - it's a mediocre game and this hurts me so bad.

Whether inside or outside the game, this story only creates more hatred.
It may be a good game if it does not use "The Last of Us" as the game name.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
