The graphics, the gameplay all good (no major changes in gameplay section, but stil good).
The decision to play a lot of with Abby is not working for me and there are some stories issues that are going to make me to never finish the game.

Gameplay felt too repetitive with sprinkles of cinematic to break up the monotony. Falls very short of its groundbreaking predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. if i were to rate this a year ago when the game came out this would no doubt be a 10 for me. i loved my first play through but going back a few weeks ago i have some issues with it.

the games far too long. on average it’s took me around 23 hours to beat. i get that they want you to play as both characters but does each section need to be upwards of 10 hours? and on top of that you also have to do the unnecessary santa barbra 2 hour killing spree just to get to the end of the game and have ellie do nothing to abby. the person she hates the most and who she’s wanted dead for the last 25 hours of gameplay. what-

the love triangles. one is pushing it but 2? really naughty dog? at least with dina, ellie, and jesse you have some character development and they come across as somewhat interesting but mel and owen are barely characters. owen is only there to be a love interest for abby but then mel is there to be the love interest for owen... how does that make any sense? and then owen just ends up cheating on mel, his pregnant girlfriend with abby the night before ellie comes and murders them. talk about jamming plot into the span of almost no time.

the pacing. if you’re telling me this game has good pacing you’re objectively wrong. if you actually wanna play the game you have to wait 2 hours and slowly sit and wait to watch joel die so you can go to seattle and actually play the game and forward plot. it’s obnoxious. and no i’m not mad because joel died, he absolutely deserved to. joel was by no means a good person and people tend to forget that because he’s the main character saving this girl but he hurt a lot of people and i think he deserved it. as much as i loved joel i can’t say his death was unexpected it was just the question of how. and i think his death was fine. he had literally no option but to go with abby because he would’ve died there and then by zombies if he didn’t go. but you play for 13 hours as ellie getting revenge for her father figure that was murdered in front of her and then you wake up for day 4 and jesse immediately dies, tommy gets pinned, ellie looks as if she’s about to get shot and then boom. you switch abby. who you play as for the next 9-10 hours of the game. i physically had to stop for a bit after the switch because it was so **** stupid. the only part that saved abby’s section was yara and lev who are by far the most interesting characters in that game. them and the seraphites kind of ways are very interesting to hear about and see. the rat king boss fight is also really intense and enthralling and i can’t say i was expecting that. as well as day 3 with abby when you get to the seraphite island and make it to yara and lev’s mom to find out she’s dead and then have to escape the island in hopes of getting away from both scars and wlf is really fun and exciting. but that first day as abby is truly miserable. they present it as if it’s an entire other game and start from scratch with a brand new storyline 12 hours into a game you thought was already getting a bit repetitive; but for the sake of ellie and to see how she got out you kept going. and those flashback placements.. my god. you have a day full of action you’re psyched for the next exhilarating thing and boom you’re in a museum with joel. it’s a real turn and while i loved seeing joel it felt out of place and just there for the sake of being there. also the ellie storyline of revenge is bad but also let’s go kill all of these people one by one brutally for information about someone we’ll end up sparing is extremely confusing.

    overwhelming positives:
as i said yara and lev’s storyline really shined and made the game for me. hearing about what they’ve been through and lev’s backstory is so so interesting and always had me wanting more. the visuals and atmosphere were stunning and you feel as if you were really in a post apocalyptic version of the areas. i also loved the combat mechanics and the stealth options. never have i seen a game do stealth better then this one. the ability to duck in a building and hide in a room after mowing people down or lunging into a field of grass and picking people off with your silenced pistol was so so cool and fun. day 2 as ellie really stuck out because of its nonstop combat and exploration of areas whether it be in hillcrest or the hospital there was always something new.

overall the game sticks out. for good and for bad. it will still resonate with me for making me so invested in something during a time where it was hard for me to enjoy life. and while it has some major flaws it’s still at the end of the day the last of us, not the one we all loved years ago but the one that showed us how brutally honest that world can be. it’s an extremely raw and emotional game that should be seen as it is. it’s not groundbreaking it’s not horrendous. it’s the last of us part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished The Last of Us part 2 and was totally disappointed.
The only nice thing I found and that I saved was the gameplay but only because I had fun.
I state that I was totally indifferent to the story and what was happening in the game, but I followed it all to see how horrible the writing was. The story is told in a horrible way unlike the first chapter, also the game becomes quite predictable with the situations that will happen to you during the game, for example you know that there will be a jump scare, enemies that will attack you, moments when the character falls and other situations such as finding resources before enemies I have bosses, safes and more. For a game that wants to be realistic it is full of forcing to move the plot forward and meaningless moments. For example Tommy who enters Seattle with the horse but when we arrive we find the gate closed and the power turned off, when with Ellie we go to the hospital from Nora and after capturing her we throw ourselves into the hole under both without a mask but the soldiers only notice that Nora does not have the mask, Nora who could give a false information to Ellie about where to find Abby since they were alone and that Nora would have transformed / died from spores, Jesse and Ellie separating while going to the aquarium, the map that falls to Ellie at the aquarium but no one notices even when they return to the theater, Ellie who knows why Abby killed Joel but in the game is not shown how he knows, Jerry Abby's father who should be younger than Joel during the first TLOU but who does not know how he became so good and can create the vaccine despite its alleged age does not correspond with his medical knowledge especially in a post-apocalyptic world, Abby and Lev who are going to the hospital and while crossing the bridge fall right into a building where there is a swimming pool still full of water, the part where Abby arrives at the hospital alone and the WLF soldiers ask him if she has arrived swimming and Abby replies that her boat has gone but checking the area there are no steps to get to new and the only passage to get there by boat has debris and barbed wire, Abby who is not killed several times because she is saved once by Manny, two by Yara, the farm where Ellie, Dina and JJ are that is poorly protected by bandits who could assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. The enemy artificial intelligence is good but nothing as great as it seemed to me at first look. I didn't like the two The Last of Us and I don't care about their story, characters etc, but honestly I found the first chapter clearly superior on almost everything except the gameplay that in TLOU2 has improved assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. This review is based on my personal and subjective experience. P.S. Excuse me for my bad English.

Once again Naughty Dog has surprised us with their strong design and beautiful environments in a video game. Graphics were absolutely beautiful and the environmental physics was believable. Also, good job on the Rat King (the new type of zombie - cannot spoil this bit), I literally freaked out loud while fighting one, scary as hell.
Uncharted introduced me to Naughty Dog, and let me tell you, when I played the Drake saga, his legacy, his final adventure, I teared up. It still stands as the best story based Games ever. My point is really simple to interpret, Naughty Dog has always been about the story, I never cared about the graphics or the upgrades. Now if someone asked me if Last of Us 2 was worth their time, honestly, I would say, play it, but don't get emotionally attached. Kill the zombies, skip the cutscenes (if that option is available, god please). The story wasn't what I expected it to be and I was utterly disappointed with a certain choice that Naughty Dog made. When you sacrifice a hero, You do it honorably, you send him off like a badass (not just bash him with clubs and trigger the audience).
When I play a game, I wanna be happy, I want to be emotionally connected to the characters. With this game, I just feel empty. I have been a fan of Naughty Dog since Uncharted and Crash and I always will be. I didn't like the game story-wise, but it was still a good game, not a masterpiece like these so called "game journalists" preach. You want my honest opinion, play it once. The game's replayability, to me, is nil due to my issues with the story.
I hope Naughty Dog really understands fans like me, cuz we are not saying it to make them feel bad, we just want another good game like Last of Us 1 and Uncharted. They experimented, that's good, move on now.
PS : People who believe this game deserved GOTY, are just lying to themselves. Animal crossings literally blew everyone away and deserved GOTY, no hate Naughty Dog, but they literally deserved it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm still kind of not sure about how I feel about this game. Like on one hand it has absolutely phenomenal gameplay and combat. But the story really was a downgrade from the first game. I honestly don't even know how they came up with the story for this. I mean the main character is literally killed off within the first 2 hours of the game. And we're then forced to play as his killer named Abby. Then the game tries to make us feel bad for Abby because Joel apparently killed her dad (which was a useless npc that had no relevance to the story) in the last game. I have absolutley no idea why they chose to give some useless npc a whole backstory. Abby killed I don't know how many people in this game. So in the last of us 3 is some random npc going to kill lev? And then will we spend the whole game trying to go kill them? I mean the whole plot of this game is getting revenge. But then when Ellie finally has the chance to get her revenge, she decides it not worth it. Why did she decide that it wasn't worth it then? Why did it take her so long? I mean Ellie literally killed all of Abby's friends to get to her. She basically killed everyone that Abby loved. And then when she finally has her hands around her neck she decides that it isn't worth it? I mean ellie killed i don't know how many people to get to her. She even kills DOGS and a PREGNANT WOMAN. To just eventually decide that it isn't worth it. Then the pacing of the game is just horrible. One second your at your "base" with Tommy and Jessie. And then the next second Jessie is getting his face blown off by Abby. I guess in the next game we'll play as Nora's little sister to go kill Ellie. Its just so not thought out. There's hundreds of npcs that we kill throughout this game. Where's their backstory? Do they have friends that's gonna come seek revenge on Ellie now? Then the section where they force you to play as Abby is entirely too long. I guess they tried to make us care about her and see things from her point of view but it just doesn't work in my opinion. Lev and his siblings backstory was pretty alright I guess. I just wish I didn't have to spend 1712833 hours playing through it. To be honest, in the next game if we're forced to play as Abby and Lev I probably wont buy the game. Sorry but I really just don't care about them at all to be honest. You cant just kill the main character that everybody loves WITHIN THE FIRST 2 HOURS. And then expect us to feel sorry for them. I also didn't like how impulsive ellie acted as well. Like when that man was being homophobic to Dina. Why did Ellie get mad at Joel for STANDING UP FOR HER. The only enjoyable part of this game was when Ellie had flashbacks about going on adventures with Joel. Overall I'm very displeased with this game and the story. But hey at least we got good GAMEPLAY and COMBAT. Don't know if ill buy the next last of us. Expand

There are many hours of totally irrelevant storyline crammed in between the climax and the ending. And the worst sin of of all, the game shoehorns you into playing as the antagonist for 10-15 hours, in a failed effort to build sympathy for that character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was really hesitant to play this game after I saw user reviews. Since it was on sale few weeks ago decided that it is worth the money and tried it out on PS5.
So in a sense would way that this game is not a 5.7 as users describe it. Also it is not a 93 as metacritic describes it. I gave it a 7 which is right in the middle of both.
Best part of this game is visuals. It is pin point to a smallest detail and I loved it, a breath taking display. Also "Naughty Dog" introduced a lot of configuration which should become standard in every game. Kudos to the team under technical stuff and designers. A fantastic job.
Now to a part that makes it 7. A story. It was a disrespect to a first game. It was full of plot holes and uncharacteristic decisions by Ellie, Tommy and Joel. Also what does a pregnant woman do in a battle field? It does not show that she is independent or strong. It just shows that she is stupid and does not care for a child. With all things a side, the story would have been acceptable if it was not for the last chapter which destroyed Ellie and Tommy as a characters. Speaking about Abby. She is not that bad. Not great and not terrible as well. Not much to say more...
To sum up, if it was a spin off, it would be 8-9 as a game, now it is 6-7 due to poorly written character story lines.

The Last of Us - Part: II is a gorgeous game, make no mistake about that. It is also a prime example of flavor that overpowers function. At some point during its development, its ambitious ideas became an insurmountable obstacle for its own success and it sadly brought down the experience provided by the first title.

The concept here was "The never-ending cycle of violence" (these are the author's words not mine). This adventure carefully constructs and delivers upon that idea while forgetting this is a videogame.

Interactivity, you see, is a boon and a curse. Audiences can be taught important lessons through media and art. But they're not supposed to feel patronized for decisions that are being made for them. By restricting the player's actions, pacing, and choices at critical moments (which I won't spoil) the suspension of disbelief is shattered and we just follow this dramatic narrative that often undermines its own ideas.

It is difficult to justify any other criticisms regarding its story or pace without spoiling interested players, so I prefer to leave it at that. What's crucial here is realizing that games of this nature derive most if not all of their value in the strength and delivery of their narratives. So a failure here means catastrophe for such a piece.

There are simply better, more engaging, and interesting shooters, survival horror games, and even zombie revenge stories out there.

The presentation is superb, in every sense of the word. From audio engineering to accessibility options, the full playthrough is a sight-to-behold that even if impressive, never quite subverts expectations in a breath-taking way.

The gameplay is basically an expanded and refined version of what was on offer before. More enemy variety, verticality and challenge better the experience. Pacing for these more "action-focused" sections is a bit worse though.

The Last of Us - Part: II will always serve as an example of how not to take advantage of a medium to tell a story but it is otherwise an amazing looking game with gameplay refinements over a well-received first entry.

P.S. A bit sad I never did hear my own name when blowing up a dude's head though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In short:
The gameplay is amazing. Graphics are insane.
The story is meh, Pacing is way off. We all know revenge is bad and takes you to a darker place. But the physical, emotional and general consequences lack for the Abby character.
Abby lacks a story arc and is a general bloodthirsty psycho, as evidenced by various cutscenes, and her gameplay (she does kill her friends with no remorse). She is as sellfish as they come. The writers try so hard to make you feel bad for her, but her characterization makes the opposite.

    I will give two examples:
Abby decides to torture Joel. After he saved her. Her friends are in on this, knowing full well he saved her.
Her words to Dina, as she knows that she is pregnant, while having a knife to her throat are "Good".
(And looking at Lev makes her stop? Give me a break!)

Her arc is a fetch quest, that is filler. Her arc does not make sense, why would a bloodthirsty psycho want to help two kids? Never explained.

In all honesty while Ellie doesn't become a better person, it is clear why most players sided with her and wanted her to succeed. Her character is written better.

Overall I wish this game had a multiple choice ending. Sparing Abby, Killing Abby or getting Killed by Abby. That would be realistic and far more consequential .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us Part II,

Absolute disaster it just can’t be a sequel for one of the best games ever, so many agendas over story, the way this game get dispose of the most important character is just provoking and stupidily written, the ending dosen’t makes sense or may I say the whole game in terms of story, characters and dialog but the gameplay/graphics and setpieces were top-notch and all that besides the little great details gave this game the 6 rating Expand

New characters are introduced and are so unmemorable, so when they do die it elicits no sadness or grief whatsoever. Joel dying was needed for this game, but it could’ve been done so much better. Graphics are amazing and gameplay is pretty much the same with no major leaps in innovation made. Overall the game is above average, but the story holds it back so much. Expand

By taking out a beloved character so early in the story, they quickly alienated a large portion of the fanbase that was strongly attached to the core characters from the first game. What followed was two stories of revenge, back and forth, trying to pull you into both sides of the story with many new characters, but was somewhat unsuccessful, and it had an ending that felt a bit empty. I liked the game for the most part, but definitely did not tug on the same emotional strings that the first game did, the game was quite entertaining, but the story was a bit of a disappointment. The gameplay is in my personal opinion a 10/10 its fun, tense and well crafted. And then there is the story... and yes I understand why people were disapointed, and in fact so was i, some of the things that happend made me think why did they choose this? After playing the game twice i sat down and broke down for my self why i thought this. There is an amazing tale here but for the end to be: oh I got revenge so you shouldnt boo hoo go home Ellie. If it had been handled just a bit diffrently it would have been 10/10, so if they choose to make a third game, all i hope is that they think about what the fanbase wants and what makes sense for the characters they have to use, because you can have the best character but if you ignore what they stand for and is written for then of course fans will retaliate with hate and disapointment. My hope is that the director for the first game comes back because to me, he gets the universe and the characters Expand

Whoever is giving this a TEN I dont know how you could. This game is way too long and get so repetitive. Some of those Abby missions were so irritating not because its Abby but rather its the repetitiveness of them. You literally do the same stuff with Ellie in similar surroundings. I know why they did it but my god they could have done it a different way. Why not just send us to the crane earlier on then send us to the island instead of all the other crap that we did already with Ellie. Trust me this game is great but its needs a haircut.

I think I have to mention the story cause this games selling point is the story. Not the zombies, there is plenty of zombie games. Not the gameplay, there's better gameplay in many other games. Its the story. People didnt think ohhhh cant wait to rummage through a load of cabinets in this 40 hour game. No. Its the story. The story gets a passing grade.

What a pass? How? Well Im glad you asked. Your on a revenge mission with Ellie and thats not interesting to be fair. But the killing of Joel you feel the same as Ellie. You must get after Abby. You must. We must. And as you progress through the game its goes pretty with the odd flashback with Joel in their which reminds you what your fighting for. That man that you've played as, that Ellie was mentored by and was essentially her father. And then when you come out of the flashbacks your back to the reality that Abby took him from us. Your motivated again.

Now the story takes a dramatic turn at the theater where you play 10 hours of Abby. Huh! Thats just just weird. And you basically just play the game again but as Abby. The story just stops and restarted again. The game just stopped and restarted again. And dont get me wrong there are some great game moments and story moments in there but it belongs in a DLC or as an after game unlock or something like that. Just shoving it in there is jarring. And you play as Abby in the theater going after Ellie. Again weird choice. Maybe make that a choice. You play as Abby or as Ellie. Its a game after all

Look its a good game but its long. The story is a bit of a mess and the way it was put together was even messier. And yeah Joel dieing sucks but thats not a game breaker for me. There is just no pay off with it. Some characters are inconsistent. Now I heard its full of SJW stuff. Yeah maybe some but thats not the issue here. This game had some ideas where to go but they skipped a few steps and now we have a game with great mechanics but the story is probably still on the second draft while the first game had maybe 13 drafts.

Seven out of Ten. And I felt horrible playing it.

The game aint better or worse than the last. The Story just continues and yes Joel´s death hit hard and it really took a while until I could continue playing but it really kept me playin. I loved every second hunting for his murderer and I hated every second playin her but she has a Story and I ended up not liking Abby but at least understanding her. No Improvement in Gameplay or anything new to mention otherwise (except the Graphics of course), but I didnt really expected that to happen anyway after the first game because what do you wanna change? Its all fine?
    loot,kill,cutscene/storytalk - repeat
    perfect for me.
3 points away for not making a multiplayer because: Just a Story? not even choices? No unlockable Outfits like in the first part? No Replayability I would say even though ive replayed the first one like 8 times and im now on my 2nd playthrough with the second part because it still delivers the thrill and a good Story on top ( only if youre not too sensible I guess, seeing all those crying people cursing the writers as edgy teenagers haha)

Probably just dudes bein dudes anyway cant stand a women killing their male mc.

But the Game gives me exactly what I wished for. If not for whats missing id give the Game for what it has a solid 9. The end was really shaking me up but I didnt get that ultimate finisher, like that was already Joels death

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just want to get this out of the way and say this game is not bad, and is decent. There is a lot of factors that play into why this game gets hate. If you have played the first game and loved it I will say go and play the second. I just need to say why this game falls flat.
My actual game problems include the gameplay being kinda recycled, some lackluster characters, and horrible story decisions. The graphics and emotional depth is incredible, but the narrative is bad. Their will be moments that will piss you off like character deaths, ending, Abigail, and the overused theme. It’s such a shame since you can tell that Naughty Dog put so much effort and passion into this game. I will continue to support Naughty Dog even after this game. The expectations were unrealistic, Halo, 2, 3, 4, God of War, Red Dead 2, gta 5 for example had such high expectations and this game suppressed all of these. I feel like no matter if the game was great people would still be disappointed, because people were expecting this to be a masterpiece. So either way this game was kinda bound to fail. When you make a sequel to a book, movie, or a game. The thing only people care about is how well does this game carry on from the 1st one. This game does that poorly. With elements that no one cared about. I don’t think I have to talk about them, because at this point beyond knows about them. Overall the game suffers from the expectations, and how poorly the story expands from the first game.

'Could' have been. However, the story and character dynamics is what draws the line, hence my inability to rate this game any higher than 7. Every side character in TLOU2 are one-dimensional to the point that it hurt my brain. I adore a good relationship build-up between 2 characters amidst a zombie apocalypse. But Ellie & Dina? I hate how the game tried to shove them down my throat. Like no, I don't care about them. They have no chemistry, I don't know anything about Dina (neither do i want to, because she's so one-dimensional and a burden). When the game made me control Abby in the second half, at first I was angry like most others but at one point, i gave up on the anger and decided to look at the story from a new perspective. Even from an unbiased point of view, Abby's story arc is a cheap rip-off of TLOU1. Lazy writing, just a lazy attempt at manipulating the player's emotions into liking Abby. It didn't work, though. I still didn't like her. Her height phobia was a good detail, for the sake of comedic relief. The addition of a cult like Seraphites is an interesting idea, on paper. But the game couldn't even make a cult arc good. They deserved an award for this abomination. In conclusion, the gameplay makes up partially for the bad writing. Instead of 'The Last of Us Part Two', if it were a whole different game with characters you've never seen before, maybe-- just MAYBE this game would have been worthy of a higher rating. But, oh well. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't normally leave reviews but I felt obligated based on the train wreck of handling user reviews and feedback post launch. I watched numerous lets plays of this game to develop my opinions of this game and to see if any sense can be made from it.

    Positives:
The gameplay, audio design and AI are very good especially considering this kind of game where story is the most important component and is more of a walking movie style of 'game'.
This game had some great improvements from the first such as enemy groups calling their allies by name and demonstrate a grieving sadness when you kill them making the experience more immersive and making me want to actively avoiding killing where possible.
Visually the game is stunning considering it's a console only release for the PS4 so considering the limited power of the hardware it's very impressive what the artists have done with the game while also making sure it runs acceptably.
The audio team hit it out of the park in this game. The background music helped immensely with creating an atmosphere where I felt tense especially in dark deserted buildings where there's potentially enemies. The voice actors also did an amazing job with what they were given and full credit to them.
The story had it's points where it grabbed me and wanted me to continue playing to see what happened next, this happened regularly for the first half of the game.

    Negatives:
The game was rather buggy for me especially, I don't really see many people talking about this but there were plenty of bugs ready to break my immersion and took away from the experience.

The largest downside by far is the story. This is a huge disappointment especially considering these games are more of a walking movie and falling short on the most important part is a horrific mistake to make.
The structure of the story is the biggest mistake made, if the story was restructured in a way where you played as what many people consider the villain from the start and play through events as they occur in the timeline rather than the monstrosity that made the final cut then maybe people would be able to make a connection to Abby before she kills their favourite character. I know at least I would've.
The death scene itself was very badly done, I don't expect Joel to be a Marvel Superhero but come on, he literally just got taken out by a complete random out of the blue, the entire introduction for this part was a disaster. Wasn't it possible to have any conceivable way of Abby and Joel crossing paths rather than a coincidence, like literally anything, like maybe a civilian shelter distress call or something. And also, why would Joel just give out his information to a complete stranger when in the first game it was shown that he is a very distrusting person.
One of my more recent complains is the being forced to kill animals, in a game of this scale where it advertises inclusions for vulnerable people you should not be forced to do uncomfortable things such as executing Abbys dogs. Also I'm not a fan of sex scenes in games so having to sit through multiple scenes of intimacy made me feel uncomfortable as I felt as if I couldn't skip in case
I missed some important plot piece.

    Summary:
Game is a train wreck of a poorly structured story which is a large let-down considering what this game could've been if that were not the case. Game is rated highly based on what it does right which is almost everything else.

At the time I probably would've given the game a 4 or a 5 due to its very inconsistent story-telling, how little I cared for the characters, and how the game dragged on loads towards the end. But after playing the game a second time through and watching others play it, i've leaned towards understanding this game a little bit more. I appreciate the vast beauty of this game, and its much improved gameplay from the first. I enjoy the brutality of the story and the point its trying to tell. However, I still have those same thoughts on the framing of the game as a whole. The story, albeit very different from the first seems as if it was caught in some sort of rewrite, there are points in the story where it seems its trying to hammer home this idea of the cycle of revenge and brutality, where other points it seems to try to call back to the first game. This detracts from the story in my opinion as I would much rather prefer that the game be hammered home in either direction, either take it in the way of The Last of Us, or hammer home your new idea for a story, don't get cold feet trying to do both. The also relative inconsistencies in the story and how little it seems to do to make us care for certain characters certainly detracts from the game. But my BIGGEST complaint of the story is the arbitrary split in the middle of the game, I strongly feel that if the game had simply had both sides of the story running alongside each other, the game would've felt smoother and not dragged on as much towards the end. To me, it makes no logical sense why you would write a story that builds all the way up for 8~ hours up to a climax, just to cut away to another 8~ hours of gameplay to make us go through the whole process again. While ive come to appreciate the game more than I originally did, there still are some story concepts and writing that I cannot wrap my head around. However, I would still probably tell you to give this game a watch or playthrough as it definitely is one to watch. Expand

The graphics fighting mechanisms, gameplay, sound, everything in this game is PERFECT. unfortunately though it a story nobody really nobody wanted to see. The person who wrote the story must be a sadist. If you like Joel and Ellie please do not play this game because they have managed to completely destroy those 2 characters. They completely ruined the glare the first game had. For me it is a sequel that should have never been. The problem however is that the actual gameplay of this game is very short with awefull pacing. You spend a big part of the game just walking og watching cutscenes and the story told here is a mess, the big twists in the story was so easy to see coming. For some reason they force you to actually play through a lot of the cutscenes in the game, making a second playthrough a chore. At the end I felt like a wasted my time playing this game, the story was boring and what felt like 70% of the game was cutscenes or walking from point A to B while listening to the characters talking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU1 got maximum points from me. Why didn’t TLOU2 get it? There are three main reasons for this:
    1. The way Joel died was just horrible.
    2. Playing as Abby was a forced activity that I would not have wanted to do.
    3. Story.

This game feels different compared to the first game. It does have some new game mechanics compared to the first game (for example crawling and dodge possibilities), but nothing very different. Infected behavior is a little bit different and the sound they make is also refined. It takes time to get used to, especially if you've just played through TLOU1.

I remember in TLOU1 trying to get past the doctor without harming him, but the game wouldn't allow it. It was just frustrating. And now Joel paid a high price for it. Joels death was too cruel for me as I loved his character and played with him over 10 hours in the first TLOU game. I felt like I was ready to stop playing the game after that scene. But I forced myself to play to find out what would happen to Ellie.
On Ellie`s gameplay, you don’t get powerful weapons (for example shotgun and plantable bomb) if you don’t search every corner and every house. I can only imagine how hard the game is without these.

Playing as Abby went on and on, felt like never ending. I noticed that playing as Abby on normal difficulty was significantly harder than playing as Ellie. It was fun that Abby had a dog and I got to use it a few times at first, but that was about it. Most of the time the dog was not with Abby. WLF always keeps dogs with them, but somehow Abby only had it in the beginning. I don’t get it. Fighting Tommy, aka Joel's brother, was especially uncomfortable as Abby. Tommy was very good with his sniper rifle and could easily take Abby down as he took already the whole WLF team down. I absolutely did not want to play that part, and it felt so wrong. Elli and Abby's fight in the theater was particularly strange. Elli was so much stronger (shotgun, etc.) that she could have easily killed Abby. But the game didn't allow it!

There are a lot of flash backs, and I repeatedly lost track of where I was and what I was doing. I've never seen so many flash backs in any game than this one.

So, Ellie is gay and is dating a woman, Abby is like a man, and there is a dedicated chapter to transgender girl/boy. What did I just play? It does not make any sense at all. Abby had sex with Owen but for some reason didn't get pregnant. Owen had sex with another woman (Mel) and quickly got her pregnant. You can't fail to notice these kinds of strange things.

If you have played TLOU1 and are thinking about playing TLOU2, I recommend not playing it. Joel did what he had to do with all those who wanted to hurt Elli. This game is not worth ruining the beautiful memories of Joel.

This is one of those games that people have either lovely or hated, where do I stand... well despite the good things it does, I completely and total HATE is game, and hate is the right word for this.

    The good:
    - Graphics and attention to detail is something to be commended.

    - Animation of every character and NPC is flawless

    - Combat is satisfying and does require you to think either on your feet or ahead of time

    - The Acting is solid from everyone, even the grunts that you're forced to kill say their lines to the highest standard

    The Bad (where to start?):
    - I said the graphics are amazing, but I don't think the visual design looks good, it's mostly grey, grey as far as the eye can see which isn't fun to look at.

    - Level design is quite simply either an over-sized corridor that doesn't look like a corridor so as to trick your brain into thinking you're not walking down a corridor, or walking down an actual corridor.

    - Mission design is pretty much, "hey see that place off in the distance, we gotta walk that for some reason, and they'll probably be something in our way that we need to brutally kill" CTRL C for 20 hours.

    - Furthermore... IT'S 20 GOD DAMN HOURS LONG!!! Way longer than it has any right to be, which makes playing it oh so very boring and frustrating after the first 10 hours.

    - Story... Jesus Christ. Metacritic only allows 5000 characters for a review, I'd need 5x that to fully example how unbelievably terrible the story, plot, writing, characters, themes and world-building are, but here's my thoughts in brief:

    - the only way I could fix the story is if it was completely rewritten, from start to finish it's stupid, slow, ridiculous, nonsensical, and full of filler, which is why it's 20 hours long

    - the plot only works if all the characters had a lobotomy beforehand, but as far as I'm aware they didn't so the plot doesn't work on any level except maybe for baby's first dramatic fiction writing.

    - despite the characters being played very well by some very talented actors who I can tell put their hearts and souls into this stinker, the characters are all terrible, despite the writers trying to make you like "certain" characters more than others, you end up hating everyone when you take a step back and think about it for 2 minutes.

    - When the overall theme of "revenge is bad" is not only predictable and has been done in a thousand other, better stories, but is horribly executed here, for example (no spoilers) Ellie does something pretty bad thing at the mid-point in order to get revenge, she seems very shaken by the experience immediately after and you'd think being a reasonable human being that she'd call it a day because of it, but in the next scene, she's completely fine, err...

    - The world in which this game takes place, i.e. zombie apocalypse doesn't sit comfortably with the overall theme, plot and story, the infected are simply there to add some continuity points and be another thing to kill, and this possibly could have been forgiven if this game wasn't attached to one of the best games that come out in the last decade and was a new IP, but it is, unfortunately, a sequel to that game which doesn't expand on the information given to us in the last game so you're more or less just wondering what's the point of this game if it's not going to expand on what the last game gave us.

And sums up my thoughts on The Last of Us Part II, it is a game that has no right to exist the way it does, it adds nothing to the world, and literally takes everything from every single character, the first game had an overall theme of "hope", a theme that stopped that game from being a pain to play, this game is a misery to play, of all the games I've played, the good, the bad, and the forgettable, the game I regret playing the most is this one.

For me, this game doesn't exist and The Last of Us was simply the last game in that IP

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us has so far been my favorite game I've ever played. The story was amazing and Joel and Ellie's relationship made me care so much about the characters. And then it was ruined by this game and FREAKING ABBY! The choice to kill Joel in the beginning of the game was a very odd one especially when people still cared about their story. And as time goes on they try and show us all these things about Joel and Ellie's relationship at the settlement but it doesn't do much considering he's, you know, dead! However, moving past this, I think the game is highly underrated. Despite its flaws in story, I think the overall game is pretty good. The gameplay is still pretty good, the stealth... exists. I think the overall game is pretty good. There's one part that I want to talk about though: Abby. Abby is supposed to be Ellie if she was... well, "evil". Abby and Ellie are the same in many ways except Abby moves on after killing Joel. Ellie however goes on this mass killing spree but it goes crazy once you have to play as Abby for 12 hours. This is my least favorite thing in the game. I shouldn't have to be forced to feel sympathetic for a villain. I wanted to kill Abby as soon as she swung a club at Joel but NO! We just have to feel bad for Abby because all of her friends are dead in this back and forth between her and Ellie. And don't get me started on Abby's relationship with the tiny children that I can't remember the name of. I'm supposed to feel really bad for these kids who are apart of a freaking cult. Like why! I think this is Naughtydog's way of showing that Ellie and Abby aren't so different. In the end nothing freaking happens. Abby almost dies and Ellie abandons Dina and her child so she can go fight some woman that almost murdered her. Ellie then spares Abby because she realizes that it's "not what Joel would've wanted". Like IT TOOK YOU THAT LONG! If we were going to go through this whole game then why are we only doing this now?

Okay enough complaining. I've already said what I like gameplay wise, but I've just complained about the story. I do like the story of the game there's just a lot of odd points that annoy me. Anyways, I think having Dina come with Ellie was a good idea. It gave Ellie and the player someone to care about and also built up their relationship. I think it would've been stupid to have Ellie not be with Dina and then at the end have Ellie and Dina be super close.

Okay, I've been complaining a lot and yes I get that, but in reality, I do love this game. It's not the greatest sequel but I think it showed that The Last of Us was never about Joel. It was about Ellie and her story the whole time. This was a good sequel, not a great sequel, but not a bad one.
So in conclusion I think The Last of Us Part 2 is a very underrated game that deserves a bit more love, even if all I can focus on is the negative. (That's just because I have a complaining problem after 2 years of complaining on a podcast)

Unfortunately with Joel’s death, you are given a character who constantly brings things up that are unhelpful, and is written poorly. She doesn’t add to anything in a positive way and just feels like a forced romance addition. It would feel the same regardless of gender, Just another bad character. She didn’t need a partner, or if you had to you should have her and Tommy together so there is the dynamic between Ellie’s style of grieving and Tommy’s. The story made me lose the will to play mid way through, as the main characters and emotional connection was to Joel and Ellie, and no other characters feel like they have a strong connection. Removing that connection removed a huge portion of the reason for playing the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains *SPOILERS*.

The Last of Us 1 is a game that has been loved by many for three specific reasons:
Graphical beauty, character development and storytelling.
Joel and Ellies complexed relationship was fascinating and made the motive of the story intriguing and captivating, and the core of the game lies in the Storytelling.
The Last of Us 2 takes place years after the first happening. It is a visual masterpiece, the VA's are on point, and it almost feels like watching a movie at times. ....But here comes a problem.
Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the game, knew that without a specific happening, this new game would eventually stagnate. Neil Druckmann needed a strong plot, so what would be better than something very infuriating?
Neil Druckmann went ahead to kill of the gameseries most beloved character.
This choice will bring Very divided opinions. I am standing inbetween.
I understand that letting us, along with Ellie, watch Joel getting tortured and executed will fire our passion. Passion for Revenge.
The problem doesn't fully lie in that Joel died. The problem lied in the Way he died and how Early he died. Creating a game while trollbaiting its fans that they will play as Joel and Ellie again, only to kill Joel off within 3 hours of a 25 hour long game is unfair. Not just for the hardcore fans but also those of us who simply created a bond with Joel in the first installment.
In other words, in order to Successfully kill Joel off, Neil had to make the rest of the story Intense and Passionated. It needed to be about revenge... and i am Not saying it wasn't.
I am saying that it was too little, too late.
The first 7 hours after Joels death was stagnating, filled with paddings and "mini-puzzles" (For instance, when you have to find safe codes, move something out of the way or turn on generators).
It doesn't help that the relationship between Dina and Ellie barely progress or develops, which kind of sucks since you Want to like Dina. When you finally think that the game reaches a turn of event, from the slowpaces tempo it held for so long, you suddenly no longer play as Ellie, instead you get to PLAY as Joels MURDERER.

Halfway into the story, we get to follow this person, Abby, and her point of view.
Why she kills Joel, what she does up til the point of the decisive battle.
It is Very hard to care about Abby, and the whole plot feels Forced.
We get it, Joel killed her father, but the same father wanted to do an operation on Ellie that definitely would have killed her, Yet knowing he would Never have done that same operation on his Own daughter. (His hypocrism makes it difficult to pity his death at all)
Then all of a sudden Neil Druckmann wants us to care for Abbys lovelife and friendships. He fails.
Ironically the second part of the game has the most interesting actionscenes, and the grittyness can get very intense at times, almost Too real.
On that note, it is important to mention how incredibly wellmade some details in the fightingscenes are. When you for example strangle an enemy you litterally see their facial reactions to it, including their restless panicked eyes and the screams from someone that you just shot sounds unnervingly realistic.
In other words, when the action gameplay works, it WORKS.
The problem is that the STORYTELLING lacks creativity and enough motivation to go on.
The passion is gone, and while playing as Abby you don't fully know what you are supposed to do. It is like a milelong padding filled with actionscenes.
On top of that there is multiple Flashbacks. Not only mentioning the main flashback for Abby, but we also enters flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks, and eventually the whole plot is lost in a maze of different timezone with little to no reasons to be told at all.
The only part worth mentioning is when Abby meets Yara and Lev. Both contribute well to the story imo.
Now that we have reached the Present again, and expect us a decisive battle where you kill Abby as Ellie, you gets to play as Abby trying to kill Ellie instead. As if the whole game hasn't been a big slap in the face already. At this point you simply don't care anymore.
After the fight ends, Abby and Ellie goes their seperated ways and Ellie settles down with a pregnant Dina (How convenient).
HERE the game should have ended. Simple and clean after an already failing storytelling... But NO. Now Ellie wants to hunt down Abby again.
I don't even want to dig into the ending, since it makes no sense and feels more like Neil wanted to throw in some "final fortress", but the story ends the same way as before anyways.
I think Neil Druckmann desperately tried to copy both classic Homeros and cult-director Hideo Kojima. He did not make it.
For those that loves action and graphics but couldn't Care about storytelling, this is the game for You.
For us Others who loves storytelling... this was simply a mediocre Disappointment.

Joel dies in such a rushed and contrived fashion, I felt frustrated and annoyed, not sad. Abby is the worst, as soon as she kills Joel she becomes irredeemable and yet you have to keep playing as her throughout the game. I mean you don't even get revenge in the end, Abby lives!?! I have never been so disappointed in a games story in my entire life. I'm not going to talk about the gameplay really, because its just fine. although I enjoyed the gameplay in the first game what really kept me playing was the outstanding quality of writing, and sadly this failed sequel falls flat on it's face. This is what i wrote 4 days ago, I gave the game a 2/10 but the website blocked me from posting a bad review. as it does for many other people. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has improved in many aspects from the first one, way much better gameplay, amazing graphics and the sound design is just on point every single time but this is a story driven game and all these technical stuff are there to support the story of the game to shine, and here where this game falls short, its soo anticlimactic the character progression is almost non-existent and the narrative falls short in so many times making the game feels missing something.

The fact that we play as Abby to try and get her POV is trash because we don't get anything useful other than explaining her reason which just boils down to "you killed my father" that's it other than that 50% of this game which we play as her is basically not relevant at all, she is a new character that you established in the beginning of that game that we hate, the reason why you are giving us her POV is beyond me at that point because we already established her...

if you were trying to make the players forgive her or just feels compassionate about her that wasn't the way to do it, maybe reverse the order of the game, give us insights about Abby first then continue to her killing joel then Ellie trying to get revenge only to realize this is not gonna go anywhere somehow and then ending the cycle, this feels like lazy writing as non of the main characters (Ellie and Abby) get any insight of each other at all.

Mixed feelings on the use of flashbacks and the dual narrative structure in the story. The beginning and end sections are gripping, but the time in between is disorganized and loses momentum as a result.

    Gameplay
—My favorite aspect of the gameplay was exploring the detailed, open environments, especially the beginning section in Seattle.
—If you can get past the brutality, the combat is pretty fun and strategic, but often the violence is so unpalatable I just wanted to stop playing.
—The AI is much improved from the first game and it really does feel like you have to outsmart your enemies, which is impressive.
—Survival horror fans won't be disappointed as the second act delivers some Lovecraftian nightmare fuel.

    Story *spoilers*
—Sometimes I thought, "I'm not sure what's happening or what I'm doing and I don't really care when there are more interesting things going on that you're not showing me"
—Sometimes, the story would introduce horrible ideas, retcon them, and then expect us to return to the story with full investment. When Tommy is shot in the head by Abby, I was instantly just like, "OK, I'm done. Do whatever. This game is over." And then it turns out he's alive later, and so my trust in the narrative came back, but only partly.
—I did care about where the story was going, but I cared the most at the beginning and the end, like I said. Abby is well developed and she's an interesting character like Ellie, so I didn't mind spending time with her. It takes some time to reach this point, though, and at first, her story is almost unplayable given what we know about her. But then the game humanizes her, and so the trust in the story comes back.
—You can never FULLY retcon or reverse disgust at what's happening in the story, even if that disgust turned out to be misguided.
—In all, there are parts of the story I liked and parts I didn't like. It's mixed. I need more time to think.

    Now for my pointless review.

    Looks great. Great VA.
    Mostly a walking sim
Terrible story that hurts the first games legacy.

Characters make descions they wouldn't leading to Joel getting golf clubbed to death by Abby.

We're supposed to care about Abby and understand why she killed joel while we play as her. No one wanted this. We were all fine with killing the doctor in TLOU and couldn't care about abby. We want to kill the character that kills joel not play as her and beat up ellie as her.

The story goes from abby wanting revenge to ellie to abby and then ellie.

They both kill each others friends in the name of revenge. Ellie can't get over Joel's death and leaves Diana to hunt abby knowing she'll lose diana if she makes this choice. She does and doesn't even kill her. All of a sudden she thinks back to joel and apparently he wouldn't want her to kill abby even though we all know he would.

So abby lives and ellie basically loses everything as diana and her baby leave.

Tommy also gets shot in the face lives but loses his brother and his wife leaves him.

    What a game

But after finishing it, I honestly wonder how this game got such high scores everywhere. Obviously there is good things : the sound-design is very good, there are good atmospheres. The level-design is pretty good, and the gameplay, although a bit dated, does the job. The bestiary is also more varied. But, in my opinion, the story had no place to be, especially in view of the ending (but this point is quite subjective). Then, the rhythm of the game is atrocious, we are swung from flash back to flash back and we find ourselves frolicking for hours without anything happening. Many scenes were really unnecessary, even to just "make it truer". The craft system has not been improved and good ideas from the 1 have been removed (the knives limited to kill the infected). I really struggled to get to the end of the game since we are forced to follow someone uninteresting for hours and what's more, we do absolutely everything to make us love this person, it becomes ridiculous. To finish, the end of the game is risky but ineffective. The moral of the story has been seen and reviewed, and I find that in addition to that, it was not executed with flying colors, it is even the opposite. Too bad, TLOU2 had potential, despite positive it absolutely does not deserve so much high scores and it is by no means a masterpiece. The press should wake up and stop scoring games perfectly with so many negative points. obviously it´s not a 0/10 but it´s not perfect either.
The story makes little sense. We as a player don´t even get the option to have an individual impact. A whole revenge plot that won´t let you decide if you want to take revenge in the end or not.
If this were to be a movie or a tv show it would be fine I guess. The gameplay is basically the same, though map design changed in a good way.
Additionally, I like the accessibility features.
All in all, I would give this game a 7/10. This, however, is the rating I would give using some unbalanced rating scale like IGN´s, where a 5 means absolute garbage like Fallout 76.
To balance rating scales out, this is a 5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can be said that already hasn't been said? The leaks definitely changed my mindset going into this game, which is unfortunate. I tried to avoid them like the plague, but some still got through.

Let's get out this out of the way. The game on a technical level is beyond anything being done by any Dev out there. It is truly amazing that a PS4 is pushing out these visuals and the sound design is just amazing. On a technical level, my god this game deserves a 20 out of 10! Sadly, graphics aren't the only factor when playing a game.

The story needs to be the glue that holds the entire game together to give you the drive to continue playing and this is where the game falls apart. I couldn't care less about Abby. This has nothing to do with her sexual orientation and everything to do with "WHO IS SHE?" Sure we get a little tiny glimpse into why she hates Joel, but comes on. I waited 7 years to play a sequel to my favorite game and the lead character gets killed within the first hour of the game.

Ok, great, we are going to get a classic revenge story and with Naughty Dog twists, right? Wrong! We now go on an adventure that is way too long for its own good! The game is painfully too long and you start blowing through areas and skipping exploring because you just want it to be over. You don't even know why you are playing. Switching to play as Abby makes me dislike the character even more and then keep forcing you to play as her. I get it from their perspective and story telling and they were really trying to break the mold here, but it falls flat and there NEVER a pay off. Meaning, we are playing for nothing. You play a 30 hour game for nothing, basically.

So basically we all waited 7 years for the most highly anticipated game of the generation and from the jump you have expectations smashed, forced to sit through a VERY long game not caring about half of it because we have no reason to care about Abby or her cause. We don't get the pay off we desperately wanted for Joel's death and it just comes off as lazy, forced writing to make a sequel. This game didn't need to be made from a story perspective, but Sony and Naughty Dog couldn't pass up this pay day.

In the end, I came away so disappointed and this now has me questioning Naughty Dog games in the future. I get they wanted to have that GOT's moment, that Walking Dead "OMG" shock, but they didn't pull it off here at all. They gave me no reason to replay this game due to the length and again due to the fact that literally half the game does not need to be played, forces you to breeze through sections. Maybe that is the reaction Naughty Dog wanted all of us to feel, disappointment? Maybe they wanted to be different and tell us revenge is bad? Who knows, but the story is literally one of the worst and is such a drastic almost unsettling polar opposite of what made the original Game of the Generation.

The story as a whole is completely not necessary and not believable: it's full of dumb plot twists, of "subverted expectations" and plot holes; the dialogues are trivial, futile and way too slow, too much pause, too much staring and breathing: it's just plainly boring. And when finally something happens, it should not have happened.
On the techical side it's a 10, on the story and characters side it's 1: so there you have my vote.

I know alot of these reviews are sadly extremely biased in the sense of this game is either a 10/10 or a 0/10 from critics and fans alike, but ND really messed up with this one, but i really wanted to love this game

What i liked: -Graphics are stunning and the face capture in most parts of this game makes the brutality of the world come off as much more gruesome than the first one. -

    - Gameplay is still very fun, just slight tweaks and slight enhancments than the first one.

    What i Didn't like:
-the story. This is my biggest pet peeve, this game makes already fleshed out charecters make dumb decisions left and right that makes you never feel fully satisfied on where the games taking you the whole way through, and the ending raises this feeling to the highest degree, im all for a sad ending, not a needlessly sad ending that feels as if Neil druckman had just got too ambitious with what he started writing.

The only thing that makes this feel like a last of us game is the title and game play, but the plot is so all over the place and non nonsensical (especially in the later second half) you end up feeling burnt out and unmotivated to even want to see the ending.... just for it to feel just as meh as the rest of it.
i really hope this isnt the future of ND and i really wish i could say this is an 8/10 but its not.

7 years, for this. Turns out it all was for nothing. The gameplay, voice acting, graphics, sound design, and soundtrack are fantastic, top tier. However, the story, holy hell it's awful. Without getting into spoilers, which I believe you should because it's worth spoiling your self just so you don't have to play this. Anybody who loved or just enjoyed the characters/story in the first game has a high chance of disliking this. If you're new and for some reason randomly playing this and not the first, sure maybe it's good if you have no idea about the characters. Even with the weird and downright cringe dialogue but I was hoping the combat and overall production of the game would maybe make it easier but it didn't because I was so frustrated with the story. If anything it made it worse, because of how great this game could've been with a solid story.

It's so disappointing Druckmann went the "subvert expectations" dumpster fire route. People wanted more of what made the first game so good but no. Also, the false advertising, model swapping is gross. If there's a part 3, I won't be buying.

If you play this, I hope you find a way to enjoy it.

I have been a vigilant defender of professional game reviewers, finding them to be significantly more in-tune with what the population at large considers "good" and "bad" than the average film critic. I always thought that this had to do with the stigma surrounding gaming; there was never any clout to be had, no influence to be gained or used, no desire to cultivate a certain image, and no desire to be anything other than just a group of people enthusiastic about their chosen hobby/artistic medium. Have games become too big for that now? Are we now going to be subjected to the howling wilderness that is modern film criticism? In the past, I always used professional reviews/metacritic scores as the biggest part (along with my personal taste) of my decision in whether or not to buy a game because I found them to be mostly right on the nose (Demon's Souls was critically acclaimed at launch, well before it became a commercial success). I guess those days are coming to an end now. Expand

The good: The graphics clearly pushed the industry forward, but I would argue that Death Stranding accomplished the same quality so I don't give it many points for being a tech demo.
The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.

The bad: I'll break this down as best I can but TLDR the story and characters fundamentally fail on nearly every aspect. So spoilers ahead.
    1. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, Abby kills Joel within the first few hours of gameplay due to his brothers frankly ridiculous mistake of sharing his full name. This is the decades through the apocalypse survivor who wouldn't be the slightest bit cautious when he knew people were looking for him... Evidently.
    2. Shifting perspectives, after Joel is killed we eventually get to play as Abby... for ten hours... What I like many others did was run the killer right into a clicker as I'm sure many others did. Why? Because I played through an entire game that I loved as the character that Abby unceremoniously murdered. I am made to feel over time that Joel was a bad guy for dismantling the Fireflies. But issues with that.
1.1 If you listen through the first games recordings they had many other cases where they thought they could create a vaccine with. All of them were killed, none of them produced a vaccine, Ellie very well could have been killed for nothing.
1.2 Worse yet, it is impossible to create a vaccine with that small of a team in that small of a facility, on a global scale it would take 1-10 years based purely on how lucky they got.
1.3 And the final most important reason, I didn't care when I did it. I care about the little girl who Joel had been taking care of for the past couple dozen hours of my life. Do I care about the people who would just as readily shoot as help me, no.
    3. Really weird sex scene out of nowhere in the middle of the game while other Sony products are bashed for having 'sexy' outfits.
    4. The lazy attempt to make me understand Abby, the villain in my humble opinion, just by throwing me in their shoes. This is contrived to make the story complex and powerful, but instead becomes a lazy way to extend gameplay. When thinking about ways to do this better I thought of Horizon Zero Dawn, Helis's tent had the logs inside which was given a bit lazier than spreading them out to piece together over time, but it was still a way to understand someone who killed the father figure without empathizing with them. This doesn't do that, this says hey you know how Ellie is a rage ball of revenge, well here's another rage ball of revenge empathize with her over the one you spent the whole last game and the lions share of this game with.
    5. Finally the ending "Boss" fight. You play as Abby not Ellie, you are not allowed to get Abby killed. Abby almost kills Ellie's pregnant girlfriend and says good when she learns that fact. (I don't care that Ellie inadvertently killed her pregnant friend.) Then once again at the actual ending you track down Abby have her underwater about to die when suddenly, oh violence bad comes in and suddenly hey I know I've killed hundreds of people to get here but yeah lets let them go. Then they have the balls to have a cut scene with Joel just to make you really regret spending money on this tech demo written as a tumblr fanfiction trying to be deep but instead being shallow and infuriating.
This isn't undertale, this isn't dishonored, and this isn't Detroit Become Human. This isn't a pacifist game going into the issues of violence. It's a revenge game and with all the set up to this point you can't just say violence bad and end it. Kill Abby give the player that catharsis, then give them the time to reflect on it after. It would make you wonder if the revenge was worth all the bodies left behind in a world already in an apocalypse, ponder if Joel would have wanted it, and whether you can live with the emptiness it leaves behind. But instead this game left me hollow, it broke my heart not that Joel died but that he died in such a stupid way. And it destroyed me to have to watch such a great studio as Naughty Dog who created some of my favorite games, burn because of terrible writing. It's the end of an era with this game and I hope it can regain glory but for now it looks like it will go down in a whimper and I'm so disappointed.

The story itself is just a messy garbage. None of the characters are interesting NONE!!! When some character dies you feel nothing like they werent even there and they die a lot. To preface this, I was a massive fan of the first game and more specifically, it’s characters. Joel and Ellie’s relationship felt natural, as well as their character decisions and development - and while the game overall had a dark tone due to the world it was set in, there was still a sense of optimism and hope carried by the wonderful father-daughter relationship that developed over a well-paced, simplistic story. The story wasn’t particularly original (much like the newest title) but it was told without trying to overcomplicate or overanalyse and let the relationship carry the game. Unfortunately, what players loved about the first game is destroyed in the sequel. I fail to see who this game was supposed to appeal to - most of the new characters that the game desperately tries to get you to sympathise with are thoroughly unlikeable, and not once did I feel guilty for enacting Ellie’s vengeance upon them. The game is pretty explicit in that it is wants you desperately not to feel like this and does everything to make you feel bad about killing. This wouldn’t be an awful plot device if used in a different form of media, but forcing the player to kill and then say ‘wow, you’re a really bad person’ isn’t effective and the ‘violence is bad, revenge destroys everything’ motto that is echoed throughout the game is painful and inaffective at, well, anything.

The game isn’t without positive moments, though. There are flashbacks with our loved protagonists from the first game that genuinely brought me to tears, and the gameplay is a nice upgrade from the first game although not revolutionised. Ultimately, the Last of Us Part II is at its best when focusing on the relationships between characters - while I thoroughly disliked most of the new additions, Ellie’s girlfriend Dina stood out as one of my favourites. She is funny, passionate, and their relationship feels natural. Every time the game changed to focus on its antagonist, I just wanted to get back to more important plot moments with this duo. To sum it up, The Last of Us Part II took some great narrative risks that didn’t pay off but has redeemable qualities. The developers obviously aimed to make this a harrowing experience that would make the player feel depressed and look at the original characters in a new light - instead, it feels painfully hollow and disconnected from everything the first game did so well.

I am already playing it, and it was not as ambitious a game as they were commenting, those of naughty dog, I have noticed many bugs, a very serious downgrade, and I see that it has the same graphic engine as the first one. Abby's character seems like a robot, what an ugly character, I am playing as fast as possible to be able to kill her in the bloodiest way, because heck how horrible is, I have also noticed some lows of incredible frames, and even so the notes gave it a 96 and almost 100 in all really?, this smells like you paid journalists very well, that game becomes monotonous and continuous in graphics and things to do, the ps4 pro can not over there I suppose I think that in the next generation the graphic change will be noticed a little more and the game will be more fluid in terms of frames. But the story was shattered by the argument of leading Joel into an ambush so easily, such a careful guy, and who didn't help other people, is so stupid. well this game in my opinion is overrated, the score it should have had was a maximum of 70,For people who are used to playing good games, and who have good stories and good graphics, this does not surprise us, it is not innovative and leaves a lot to be desired, rather it seems that the first one is better composed in everything, because even in graphics making comparisons are better in the flashbacks of the moment that joel kills the doctor and runs away with ellie. The Last Of Us didn't need a second game, but fortunately it's not as bad as it could have been. It is a very unfriendly game narratively and makes a fair half of its players want to quit and watch the ending from Youtube, and I totally understand why. The pacing is very off which you could view as a massive mistake or conscious decision to make the player feel bad (which it does). But when looking back at the story as a whole, it starts to make sense and has so much great stuff in it most people can't see through their rage which is caused by some bold moves from the directors. The problem is that because of the pacing, player's interest drops too quickly. And from a game so reliant on a good story, this game really missed some points there. Good story but executed in a weirdly manner.
Gameplay is very good, although the enemy AI is quite dumb and makes killing them way too easy. The graphics can't probably get any better with ps4.

I had to sign up here and write a review, mainly because i was so disappointed at the lack of diversity of thought in games journalism giving a game with many glaring faults the title of 'masterpiece'.

    So the positives:

•Great presentation such as its graphics and environments. Animation is by far the best we've seen this generation.
Enemies have a very human like response in and to combat, they'll call each others name when one dies, they'll give orders and sometimes scream in agony on the floor as they bleed out from missing a limb... awesome.

•overall gameplay is brutal and meaty like the first, with additions like a dodge button, being able to crawl to enter stealth in tall grass. New additions such as dogs and new infected keep it fresh enough for the 25-30 hour total length. Upgrade trees giving different choices of playstyle are neat.

    • brilliant accessibility and difficulty customization, by far the best on console.

    Now the negatives:

    • The story is very poorly paced, there are rumours a lot was cut, chopped and changed, you can tell they clearly had disagreements with how to pace and lay out the story- its a mess.

    • For a Last of Us sequel it has poor writing, both in the dialogue and the really clear contrivances that play out.

•Unlikeable characters of which the game very bluntly tries to force empathy with by using props like other characters who's whole purpose is to get the player feeling a certain way or to add to the overall commentary of the game. The game is happy to use Joel as a tool to cheaply attempt the player to feel emotion rather than it occurring through natural dialogue or events.

    • Its pretentious and the main focus of everything is the commentary it tries to make. People who feel this game is a masterpiece will go onto condescend how others "might not get it" or "lack empathy" or even disregard it as all bigotry (although there are attempts to hate this game because... gays?) Listen... the theme is so heavy handed its hard to miss, so is the commentary the game bludgeons the player depressingly with over and over and over with...

it's abit self indulgent and all of it is premised on one scene very early on being the motive for revenge, said scene is the issue, if you don't buy into it being believable or you think its contrived its extremely hard to buy into the story going forward and feel anything but being taken on the most depressing roller coaster ride where characters are bland, unlikable (especially Ellie) and changed.

I feel like Naughty Dog took one of the most beloved game and characters of all time and decided to turn it into a message and commentary with those characters being the sacrifice for said commentary, while inverting some characters to maybe attempt to either add depth or complexity but ultimately fails in a way that reminds me of the trend set from season 8 of Game of Thrones or the latest Star Wars.

    Yes, that bad.

Lastly, i dont know why so many in games media thought this game was perfect when players and even 'influencers' feel so different.. Maybe they did just genuinely enjoy it and games media has a severe lack of diversity of thought... maybe it was activism and progressive politics (of which i feel this game has been somewhat unfairly characterised as having blunt identity politics...it doesn't). Who knows, but its far from a piece of art imho but the gameplay is phenomenal.

I had two playthroughs roughly 55 hours total.

    Thanks for reading.

    What a mess!

I never thought a game would disappoint me so much that I would come and leave a detailed review. I spent 30 hours playing The Last of Us Par 2 and I did not enjoy them.

Following an amazing game that was The Last of Us, this game falls short. To start off the players are not given a multiplayer mode which would have not changed the review but it would have been better than to just leave us with the bitter taste that ending was. This game takes a story approach that I have not seen any game/movie done successful in a long time. Joel, the main protagonist of the first game was no saint and some can argue he saw it coming, but how many parents did he and Ellie killed while in their quest? Even now in the second game, Ellie becomes a mythical beast just killing anyone in her sight. Joel deserved a better death. As a player what really bothered me was killing Joel and making me play as the killer for half of the game. Why ? On top of that the director of this game thinks that while we play as her we will forgive her. This game even makes Ellie look like a villain. I lost count on how many times I let Ellie put a bullet in Abby's head to get some type of satisfaction out of the whole encounter. This game had no identity and did not know what to do with its characters. The game also introduces idiotic side characters that you only want to avoid. I have no issue with Ellie being lesbian or Abby being built like a wrestler. I actually liked they did not have the generic type of character. I did have an issue as to why the game had to force a love triangle with the two characters it had. Funny enough they all end dead except Dina which was my least favorite side character.

I would have loved if this game would have let me the player make choices and my choices had consequences in the story. The developers had plenty of time to develop this game. The graphics show the true potential of the PlayStation 4. I played it with the basic edition and still ran amazing. The gameplay was almost the same as the first one except they added some small mechanics that changed the formula a bit.

Overall, I feel disappointed. The game is not as bad as most people make it look like here, however, the game is not a masterpiece either.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
