Shadow of The Tomb Raider is a decent if not too notable farewell to the new Lara Croft trilogy. It's never bad per say but it also never really manages to hit any high points - it always just works.

From a gameplay perspective everything is sort of ok with space for improvement being present in just about every aspect. Climbing mechanics don't feel tight enough and sometimes you end up with awkward camera angles which force you to take a guess at where you should be going. Combat is fairly rare which is good because the mechanics don't exactly feel great, a bit too floaty on consoles. Graphically the game holds up well, but once again - never really impresses. I did have odd lip sync problems and some fps drops but nothing too jarring.
The torture porn aspect of the game however is too much - it's funny when it happens to someone like Nathan Drake but when it's Lara you just feel bad - her character is written in a way that makes these situations feel like she is constantly being beaten down by everything around her.

Storywise Shadow Of The Tomb Raider ends up being derivative and unmemorable. It never presents us with anything new or interesting. You just go through the motions of a cliche "stop the prophecy" storyline. You can tell what's going to happen every step of the way and the ending fails to serve up any real closure for this part of Laras life. The only reason to keep going is because the protagonist is fairly sympathetic and you want to go on with the journey for her sake.

Not a bad game, but ultimately bland and forgettable.

Woke and worst game of them all.

Would not recommend this game. First off this game, makes no advancements compared to the other games, other than what seems to be some better lighting. Only reason anyone could tolerate this game is too see how much it tanks your fps by enabling RTX. Gameplay: Absolutely boring, and makes you want to speed run the game for lack of anything

First off this game, makes no advancements compared to the other games, other than what seems to be some better lighting. Only reason anyone could tolerate this game is too see how much it tanks your fps by enabling RTX.

Gameplay: Absolutely boring, and makes you want to speed run the game for lack of anything interesting. Controls are the same as previous games which is Ok, But the game is riddled with minor bugs that break the experience on a constant basis. Same repetitive garbage over and over. This game feels like the doing stupid same trick of attaching your bow with a rope to something else to progress 70 percent of the time. 20 percent just going though these quick time motions to survive, which are so easy its a joke. and lastly 10 percent actual combat. You could probably beat the entire game in 20 hours with your eyes closed. They give you allot of upgrades for the fighting parts of the game, which is basically 1 hour of the entire game, and can easily be done with even the basic weapons.

Story : I will go as far as to say i have played and beaten hundreds of games, and this game has the worst story i have ever seen. Constant blabbering about this fake god and moon goddess and other nonsense. In the most annoying bimbo voice imaginable. "Im a Reserchar" and "Yaaas". Manages to discriminate against actually beliefs, while touting tolerance and diverse cast and all the other typical SJW corporate non sense.
Laura voice is has got to be the most annoying part of this game. if you can get though that, you may be able to complete this game without tearing your ears off. Also they manage to make Laura more and more unattractive every game for obvious reasons. They want to alienate fans for some SJW woke propaganda.

Graphics: Nothing special aside from RTX, they took as long as possible, to make the characters as UGLY as possible while keeping basically all the assets the same. They put the model assets from previous games available to use. While still forcing you to use there new ones in certain missions. Lots of clipping unless you use the standard character model. No effort was made to make them blend a bit better in the game. Pure Hair is a joke, Hair FX was better in the first game at least the hair didn't bounce around like hairworks on steroids.

Gran juego.

The foliage, lighting, shadows, fog effects, & water effects above & below the surface are all amazing!!!! I do find it a little strange that Lara’s face is resistant to shadows, it kind of gives a cel-shaded kind of vibe, perhaps this was deliberate?? Some people complain about Lara’s disregard for the culture she is investigating, whatever, its a game & works fine in the story. I have enjoyed all 3 of the newer Tomb Raider games, especially this one! I play it with headphones & it is easy to get immersed in the game between the killer graphics, great sound effects & fun gameplay!!! This is easily one of my favorite games ever!!!!! :) Expand

Excellent game, the graphics are incredible, the gameplay also very nice, Lara has a lot of new abilities for stealth kills, lots of weapon and upgrades, the campaign is very long like it´s predecessor if you want at least like 75% completion. If you liked the TR games, you must finish the story of this trilogy, really awesome

For the reboot games I played through the original Tomb Raider 2-3 times, Rise of the Tomb Raider twice, and this one I dont think I will ever come back to. I dont know what they were thinking. There were awesome moments in the game that took me back to the older tomb raider games, but those moments were few and far between. Long gone are the solitary days of the original Lara Croft exploring and tomb raiding all by herself. In this new installment there are so many other people and characters who rather than adding to it take away from the game. This game brought in elements of horror, and its very graphic. Much of the game felt like a horrific nightmare rather than the wonder of exploring and solving puzzles and finding artifacts. Its like they are trying to expose the player to more and more shocking and gruesome material with each tomb raider game. They must think, “Well we had the bodies hanging and wading through blood and bones in the first 2 games, lets have dismembered body parts laying all over and human sacrifice going on all around Lara to make the experience more shocking. And lets use all the blood from all the people getting slaughtered left and right for the puzzles. Cool!” And Lara doesnt seem to care one bit in some of the situations where people are being sacrificed. Lara lets out her anger and hatred, she shows a lot of emotion and becomes extremely violent herself, but she also loses some of her humanity. Lara is in a crisis during this game, doubting, being careless, trying to figure out who she is. My only hope really is that this game is setting us up for the Lara Croft we came to love (in a new series).. the sassy fun, sure of herself character where things weren’t so dark and gloomy. Honestly, This game is dark, overly violent and gloomy and to me for the most part was not fun at all. I just tried to finish to get it over with. Uncharted: The lost legacy feels more like Tomb Raider than this. The main character in the lost legacy feels more like Lara than the Lara Croft of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I recommend playing that instead of this if you a a lover of the original Tomb Raider games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I’m an extremely huge fan of Tomb Raider, I do Lara Croft cosplay and I played every game more than one time, it’s my favourite serie of all time and I’m a fan since I’m 3. But this game really disappointed me, I loved Tomb Raider (2013), because it was a new kind of experience in the Tomb Raider serie, yeah tombs were laking but they were trying to shape Lara, to tell her what she went through to become that bad a** that we know. But I think that message got lost somewhere. Rise was good, but not amazing, I think the story was pretty weak and not memorable. For Shadow, nothing really work in my eyes. First the story is more bad than Rise’s story, second the glitches, third the character development is not there. Yes during the first half of the game they do kind of a good job to develop a bit Lara, but after it stopped. But the thing that made me the most mad is the fact that they used “the defining moment that she becomes the Tomb Raider” because I don’t know if it’s me, but I didn’t see the moment that she becomes the Tomb Raider. I was expecting Lara to become more strong emotionally, but she still cries and blame herself a lot:/, I was just expecting something more similar with the old Lara. Also I tried really hard to play the game more than twice but I couldn’t, I really get bored and it makes me sad because it’s Tomb Raider and it’s the first game in the serie that made me feel that way. I’m honestly scared with the future of the serie, let’s just hope that It’s good:( Expand

This game is pretty immense and arguably underrated, especially when viewed next to the most recent Tomb Raider games. The reason I can understand some of the mixed reception the game had on release is I have played the game to death and can recognise things that a certain player won't get along with in this. Let me explain.

The reason I can understand some of the mixed reception the game had on release is I have played the game to death and can recognise things that a certain player won't get along with in this. Let me explain.

Classic Tomb Raider (1996) was mainly about three things: the puzzles, the exploration and the suspense. The suspense part often came from the few encounters you'd actually get, alongside a sudden surge in music, which was otherwise pretty scarce. I see Shadow as returning more to these values, which is why I loved it so much, as these things were what made the original a classic. Recent entries I also enjoyed have arguably been widely successful because of the action and encounters. In this game the thing that will stand out most will be the Tombs themselves, and puzzles therein. There are encounters, however it doesn't feel like they are frequent. The game's definitely cinematic though, and you do indeed still get some of the rush from the recent games. For instance, there is one area that is flooded early on, and you're negotiating getting through it. Let's just say, it's literally a rush.

So, assuming you enjoy the Tomb aspect of Tomb Raider, this entry has the most of them, and also the best of them in years. The puzzles when taken as a whole (including the excellent x7 DLC quest/ Tombs) are the most inventive, most taxing, and impressive looking, and if this is your bag, you will probably find this the best Tomb Raider in years. If not, you may actually hate this entry, because, without the aid of guides, this game taxes you... you have to pay attention, you have to listen and watch for the clues. This game could frustrate the hell out of you.

The visuals are absolutely fantastic, arguably an improvement on the previous title. The texture detail, even on a base PS4 boggled my mind. This late 2018 game looks consistently good on practically all textures in the game in and out of cut scenes. Something I can not say for a more recent entry like say, Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

This was a platinum trophy pursuit, and I really appreciated everything the game offered. I didn't even mind most of the side quest content because they often involved entering one of the many impressive looking crypts or tombs in the main game. Some side-quests however were very 'fetchy' or 'back and forthy', which is always a chore to have to do in *any* game of this nature.

The negatives in the game for me I will say amount to the controls. At times the control response in platforming seemed inconsistent. That is to say, an action that worked in one area will not have the expected response in another area, or you may have to compensate without the game being explicit about letting on. It's difficult to explain in words, but suffice to say, as a consequence expect to die a lot during the platforming in this. For many this will be extremely irritating as it was even to me at times. This is only made worse in very hard mode (needed for Platinum trophy), as the checkpoint saves are far fewer / if any.

The other area I wasn't that into was the story itself, however within it the acting, drama and voices hit the mark for me, as the visuals (textures and backgrounds) are all on point, even on 7 year old (time of writing) base PS4 hardware.

I definitely recommend the game. I say it is underrated but recognise it won't be for everybody owing to the difficulty spike, some of the control during platforming, and its emphasis in often very taxing, very long but rewarding puzzles

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
